- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Gino here in the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches
- 0:02Speaker 1: Show for a Thursday night. After the men coming off
- 0:05Speaker 1: an Ice went over Baylor last night, they're back at
- 0:07Speaker 1: it Sunday. They go to Austin and that's a late
- 0:10Speaker 1: afternoon game. Let's see, that's a four to thirty pre
- 0:13Speaker 1: game here on the network from Austin, and we were
- 0:16Speaker 1: there last year. Beautiful arena and it should be a
- 0:18Speaker 1: great atmosphere for that game. All right. We haven't even
- 0:22Speaker 1: mentioned Paige or Asy yet. In the first two segments, Asy,
- 0:25Speaker 1: coming back from injury, of course, had eighteen big points
- 0:28Speaker 1: against Old Miss, not only shooting the ball for the perimeter,
- 0:32Speaker 1: she had a big three to stop the run that
- 0:34Speaker 1: Old Miss made, but her attacking the rim and one
- 0:37Speaker 1: thing she talked about with us last week down to
- 0:41Speaker 1: the Bahamas. All the work in the weight room has
- 0:44Speaker 1: paid off, and you can see that in a lot
- 0:46Speaker 1: of different ways.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think when kids have to sit out of
- 0:52Speaker 2: here to rehab something, it does give them an opportunity
- 0:56Speaker 2: to change their whole body if they if they want to,
- 1:01Speaker 2: if they want to work at it. Page did that
- 1:04Speaker 2: when you know, when she was doing her rehab and
- 1:07Speaker 2: as he's done the same thing. You know, she's not
- 1:11Speaker 2: shooting the ball well like she's capable of yet, but
- 1:15Speaker 2: the other things that she's able to do now because
- 1:20Speaker 2: she's that much stronger, feels that much better, that much
- 1:24Speaker 2: more confident in her body's ability to withstand whatever it
- 1:28Speaker 2: is that that she's trying to do. So, uh, you know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: it's going to take a little while for her to
- 1:36Speaker 2: get back into game mode. You know that she was
- 1:38Speaker 2: a little bit under the weather the other night. You know,
- 1:40Speaker 2: it was kind of like a game time decision whether
- 1:42Speaker 2: she was even going to play, and I thought she,
- 1:46Speaker 2: you know, she looked okay. But it's only going to
- 1:49Speaker 2: get better from here on end. And and certainly with
- 1:53Speaker 2: the schedule that we have coming up the next three weeks,
- 1:55Speaker 2: we're gonna need it.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Right when she had the surgery a year ago, g
- 2:00Speaker 1: you know, was there any unexpected things going out with
- 2:04Speaker 1: her surgery, like from the way of damage from the
- 2:06Speaker 1: previous surgeries that maybe didn't go well or or was
- 2:09Speaker 1: it just something that just the normal a second a
- 2:12Speaker 1: cl tear and you got to fix it again.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, no, there was there was more than just an
- 2:16Speaker 2: a cl tear. So that's why the rehabits taken so long.
- 2:21Speaker 2: But other than other than that, everything was pretty pretty clear,
- 2:26Speaker 2: pretty clear cut, you know, and she certainly knew what
- 2:30Speaker 2: the what the procedure looks like after surgery. You know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: she had been through that before, so it wasn't you know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I'm going through it for the first time. And I
- 2:43Speaker 2: think that allowed her to to really attack it.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:47Speaker 2: And she has a really good team, you know, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: we've got to obviously, we've got a tremendous medical staff,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you know that did the surgery. Uh, doctor Corner, doctor
- 2:59Speaker 2: R c R or fan fantastic people and they're great
- 3:01Speaker 2: at what they do. And plus you know, she takes
- 3:04Speaker 2: advantage of sources around campus that she work with and
- 3:13Speaker 2: all that. You know, Hoody Janelle, like the people that
- 3:17Speaker 2: we have, it's a comprehensive thing. And it's a lot
- 3:21Speaker 2: different than it used to be twenty five years ago.
- 3:23Speaker 2: You know, there's so much more involved and now there's
- 3:26Speaker 2: so so methodical and so detailed driven and data driven.
- 3:34Speaker 2: You know, they used to rushing back in six months
- 3:36Speaker 2: and say play and now it's it's much more involved
- 3:41Speaker 2: than that. So I'm I'm thrilled with the way she
- 3:46Speaker 2: looks and the way she's playing right.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And Aubrey too. I had a chance to see Aubrey
- 3:50Speaker 1: here at the radio station yesterday. She was doing some
- 3:53Speaker 1: stuff for monicael Ford, which she's wondering for nil deals.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Seems like she's coming along pretty good. I know you
- 4:00Speaker 1: mentioned in the first coach is Shoe of the Year
- 4:02Speaker 1: that she's really targeting what late December early January is
- 4:06Speaker 1: a potential comeback date, and it's just good to see
- 4:08Speaker 1: her back on the floor.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's that's the plan. That's the schedule that
- 4:14Speaker 2: she's on. She's playing in a lot of simulated games,
- 4:19Speaker 2: you know with our practice players very controlled. But the
- 4:26Speaker 2: other day it was like a real game, like no
- 4:31Speaker 2: holds barred and didn't take long and it's only about
- 4:36Speaker 2: twenty minutes or so. But she looked like her old
- 4:39Speaker 2: self more than at any other time since the surgery.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And she's another one. I think the confidence that she's
- 4:48Speaker 2: that she's gotten from the work that she's done is
- 4:51Speaker 2: really evident.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and then there's Giano can't get your break.
- 4:55Speaker 2: No, that poor kid can't catch your break. You know,
- 4:59Speaker 2: she's said a difference maker when she's on the court,
- 5:02Speaker 2: at practice because we don't have anybody like her. You know,
- 5:05Speaker 2: none of our other post players are like her, So
- 5:09Speaker 2: to not have her, you know, it's it's I mean, obviously,
- 5:15Speaker 2: if you take Yana and Allby and put them on
- 5:17Speaker 2: the court, that changes everything about our team because right now,
- 5:22Speaker 2: I don't know that people that we scare anybody. We're
- 5:26Speaker 2: our athleticism. You know, we're pretty skilled, but I don't
- 5:30Speaker 2: know that we you know, people fear athletics. I mean,
- 5:32Speaker 2: if you remember last year's Louisville game, all be completely
- 5:36Speaker 2: dominated that game. Yeah, took Louisville out of the game
- 5:39Speaker 2: the first five minutes and the game was over. So,
- 5:43Speaker 2: you know, getting her back unfortunate for Yanna. You know,
- 5:50Speaker 2: she's she's been trying to play through that that shoulder
- 5:55Speaker 2: problem that she has. It's kind of like the same
- 5:57Speaker 2: that Tina Charles had and she was here, and there's
- 6:02Speaker 2: an operation in her future for sure.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, before we get to break here, I've
- 6:08Speaker 1: noticed you haven't been getting to the free throw on
- 6:11Speaker 1: a whole lot. Only six makes per game, but neither
- 6:14Speaker 1: has the opposition because you don't file a lot, you're
- 6:16Speaker 1: only averaging went around somewhere around eleven personal files per
- 6:19Speaker 1: game so far, which used to be a state.
- 6:22Speaker 2: We don't get close enough to anybody to file them.
- 6:25Speaker 2: People drivel right by us, and you know, we don't.
- 6:28Speaker 2: We don't. We're not close enough to them to found.
- 6:31Speaker 2: We're not a very physical team, you know which, And
- 6:36Speaker 2: I wish we did. I wish we did fail more.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I wish we'd played more aggressively that there was a
- 6:42Speaker 2: chance that we would file more. But we're trying to
- 6:45Speaker 2: be disciplined about it and not put ourselves in jeopardy
- 6:49Speaker 2: like that. And we're not going to the free thrown
- 6:53Speaker 2: because we're shooting a lot more threes this year than
- 6:54Speaker 2: we did last year, you know, so we're not getting
- 6:59Speaker 2: we're not getting three point plays, you know, so we're
- 7:04Speaker 2: hoping to make more threes, but uh, that's always a
- 7:10Speaker 2: point of emphasis to get to the free throw line.
- 7:12Speaker 2: You know, Page is the biggest whiner in America because
- 7:17Speaker 2: she doesn't get she she feels like she doesn't get
- 7:19Speaker 2: the calls that that she that she deserves. So she
- 7:23Speaker 2: goes in there and you know, throws up something crazy,
- 7:29Speaker 2: It goes in and then she wants to know why
- 7:31Speaker 2: she didn't get a foul call. So part of it
- 7:35Speaker 2: is they just they just expect her to finish because
- 7:41Speaker 2: a lot of times what officials are doing these days,
- 7:44Speaker 2: more and more, you saw it down to the Bahamas,
- 7:47Speaker 2: they're actually waiting to see if the ball goes in.
- 7:49Speaker 2: That's what it feels like to me. It's like the
- 7:51Speaker 2: European model. You know, in Europe, when you shoot the
- 7:55Speaker 2: ball in the lane, there's always a little bit of
- 7:58Speaker 2: a delayed whistle. If the foul caused the ball not
- 8:00Speaker 2: to go in, they call the foul. If the ball
- 8:03Speaker 2: goes in, they're just waving on, let's go, let's keep playing,
- 8:06Speaker 2: which is crazy. But I think we have to be
- 8:12Speaker 2: a little more grud our big guys have to be
- 8:14Speaker 2: a little more physical in there, and I think that's
- 8:16Speaker 2: where we can get to the free throw line.
- 8:17Speaker 1: All right. Final segment with Gino here on the ucon
- 8:19Speaker 1: Women's Basketball Coaches Show coming up in just a moment
