Transcript
- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast The First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood. Dot org.
- 0:22Thanks for listening. This morning Scripture is in
- 0:30First Corinthians chapter 6, starting in verse 12.
- 0:37I have the right to do anything you say, but not everything is
- 0:42beneficial. I have the right to do anything,
- 0:46but I will not be mastered by anything you say.
- 0:51Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will
- 0:55destroy them both. The body, however, is not meant
- 1:00for sexual immorality, but for the Lord and the Lord for the
- 1:04body. By His power, God raised the
- 1:08Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also.
- 1:12Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?
- 1:17Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a
- 1:20prostitute? Never.
- 1:23Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute
- 1:28is one with her in body. For it is said the two will
- 1:33become one flesh, but whoever is united with the Lord is one with
- 1:38him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality.
- 1:43All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but
- 1:48whoever sins sexually sins against their own body.
- 1:53Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit
- 1:57who is in you, whom you have received from God?
- 2:01You are not your own. You were bought at a price.
- 2:05Therefore honour God with your bodies.
- 2:09This is the Word of God for the people of God.
- 2:12Thanks be to God. Amen.
- 2:19Well, now you know why we invited the kids to go out ahead
- 2:22of time. Let me just acknowledge the
- 2:25elephant in the room. We're talking about sexuality
- 2:29today. I warned you we would, and here
- 2:33we are. If you still feel comfortable
- 2:37though, after last week and this week, don't worry.
- 2:40We've still got money and politics and privilege in the
- 2:44weeks coming, so there's still time to get your toes stepped
- 2:47on. But we're talking about
- 2:51sexuality this morning. Not because I particularly want
- 2:56to, but because Scripture does, God does, and because the the
- 3:02culture we live in tells us that sexuality is such a key part of
- 3:09our identity, right. Ever since the sexual revolution
- 3:13in the 1960s, but I, I think especially since about the year
- 3:182000, sexuality and sexual identity have come to be
- 3:23elevated within our culture to a primary role in what it means to
- 3:29express ourselves. It's, it says, culture says that
- 3:33it's, it's a key area in which we're told we have to be true to
- 3:38our, our authentic selves, right?
- 3:41An area where we have to follow whatever it is that's in our
- 3:46heart. Modern Western culture says you
- 3:51cannot live a fulfilled life if you're not sexually fulfilled.
- 3:56It's so pervasive, we don't even realize it, right?
- 4:00It's like the air we breathe or the water a fish swims in.
- 4:05And then we add to this all with the rise of casual sex through
- 4:10things like Tinder and Ashley Madison and hookup culture, and
- 4:16you find that sex has been so thoroughly pushed outside the
- 4:21traditional framework of marriage.
- 4:25It's led to all kinds of social and relational issues or
- 4:29infidelity, pornography addiction, sexual abuse, just to
- 4:33name a few. And so I want to be very clear
- 4:37as we get started this morning that we as a church, we believe
- 4:42that God created our sexuality. He created it for our good.
- 4:47But because God's the one who created it, God's the one who
- 4:51who gets to define it in its proper expression, which he does
- 4:57multiple times over the course of Scripture or we hear words
- 5:02like this. For this reason, a man shall
- 5:04leave his father and his mother and be united with his wife, and
- 5:08the two shall become one flesh. This is the ideal that's given
- 5:13in Genesis chapter 2 verse 24, right after God creates humanity
- 5:19and brings Adam and Eve together.
- 5:21It was affirmed by Jesus in Matthew 19, five when he was
- 5:26being questioned about marriage and divorce.
- 5:28It was repeated by the apostle Paul in his letter to the
- 5:32Ephesians in in Ephesians 5, verse 31, when he was talking
- 5:37about the the comparison between a married couple and the
- 5:42relationship between Christ and the church and how those things
- 5:45interact. And Paul references it again
- 5:48here in this passage from First Corinthians chapter 6, the part
- 5:52of this passage that we read this morning.
- 5:56So I, I want to take some time this morning, look at this
- 5:59passage, what Paul was saying to the Corinthians 2000 years ago
- 6:06and what he's saying to us today, what God's saying to us
- 6:10today. And so Paul begins this passage
- 6:15the same way he did the passage we looked at last week from
- 6:19First Corinthians. It's a little later in First
- 6:22Corinthians, but again, he says I have the right to do anything.
- 6:28He's sharing a quote, a catch phrase from within the
- 6:33Corinthian culture, one that's been adopted by at least some of
- 6:36the members of the church there in Corinth, and and one a catch
- 6:41phrase that Paul clearly wants to refute, right?
- 6:46One he, he doesn't want to just let lie as it is.
- 6:50And so he says again, I have the right to do anything, but not
- 6:53everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything,
- 6:58but I will not be mastered by anything.
- 7:04He's trying to help the the church in Corinth.
- 7:07The Christians in Corinth understand that as Christians,
- 7:11we're not just slaves to our flesh, right?
- 7:16And when Paul talks about the flesh, he's not just talking
- 7:19about our physical blood and bones and muscles.
- 7:23He's not talking about our physical bodies.
- 7:25When Paul says flesh, he means our sinful nature, our lusts,
- 7:32our our disordered desires, those things that sin has
- 7:36disordered within us. And as Paul continues, there's
- 7:41another catch phrase that he wants to talk about that he
- 7:46highlights for refutation. He says food for the stomach and
- 7:50the stomach for food. On face value, you're like,
- 7:54yeah, that makes sense, right? God gave us stomachs for food.
- 8:00He gave us food for our stomachs.
- 8:02That's how God made it. That's how it's supposed to
- 8:05work. But see, The thing is the the
- 8:07Christians within the church in court, they were using this
- 8:10phrase to say, well, we're just using our bodies the way God
- 8:14designed us, right? This is just how God made us,
- 8:19right? He made us sexual beings.
- 8:21We're just having sex. That's how it goes.
- 8:23But Paul says, but your body is made for the Lord, right?
- 8:28It's it's not just made for sex and it's not just made for any
- 8:33sexual practice that might happen to strike your fancy.
- 8:39He continues says you're not free to do anything that happens
- 8:43to feel good in the moment because you don't belong to
- 8:47yourself anymore. He says you were bought with a
- 8:51price. That price was the cost of
- 8:55Jesus's life. So we don't get to define
- 9:00ourselves anymore. We as Christians, we don't get
- 9:03to define our values and our meaning or even our identity,
- 9:08which includes our sexuality. One of the ways we use our
- 9:13bodies, you see, because our bodies have become members of
- 9:17Christ's body, right? We've been united with Christ,
- 9:24but the reality is we're also united to those we have sex
- 9:28with. Specifically in that Corinthian
- 9:32context, Paul was addressing prostitution that was taking
- 9:35place within the the temples there to the the Greek gods.
- 9:39And you know, there's a port city, so there was a lot of
- 9:42sailors coming and going. And where you find sailors
- 9:44coming and going, you find prostitution.
- 9:47It's just the way of the world, but it's not the way of the
- 9:53church or it's not supposed to be, right.
- 9:56And so Paul says when you sleep with someone, you're uniting
- 10:00your body to them. Your body is united to Christ.
- 10:02You're actually uniting that person to Christ as well.
- 10:07The two become one flesh, right? That's that echo from Genesis
- 10:14chapter 2 in Matthew 19 and Ephesians chapter 5.
- 10:21And as Paul continues in his message, he tells the church in
- 10:26Corinth not just to avoid it, but to flee from sexual
- 10:33immorality. My mind automatically goes back
- 10:36to the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife back in the book
- 10:39of Genesis. I wonder if that was the same
- 10:41story that was on Paul's mind as he was writing when he says to
- 10:45flee from sexual immorality. Joseph's being seduced by his
- 10:51boss's wife. She grabs him by the cloak,
- 10:54trying to get him to sleep with her, and so he slips out of the
- 10:59cloak, leaves cloak hanging in her hands, and flees from that
- 11:05opportunity. That phrase, sexual immorality,
- 11:09it's a phrase with with broad meaning, right?
- 11:12It's anything outside of biblical marriage.
- 11:18It's adultery, it's pornography, it's homosexuality, it's
- 11:21promiscuity, it's prostitution, premarital sex.
- 11:24Do I need to go on? I think you get the point,
- 11:28right? Paul doesn't feel the need to
- 11:30get into the specifics of what sexual immorality includes what
- 11:35is out of bounds, because he's been very clear about what is in
- 11:40bounds, right? One Man United with one woman
- 11:45within the bounds of marriage, full stop.
- 11:48All right? And one of the problems is that
- 11:52sin has gotten in there, right? And sin has made the focus of
- 11:58sex what I get out of it, right? The pleasure or satisfaction
- 12:03that I receive physically. But the biblical view of sex is
- 12:09different, right? It's actually not about what I
- 12:13get from sex. It's about what I give, what
- 12:18Ioffer thinking about sex Christianly.
- 12:23It's about giving myself to another one who is utterly
- 12:28different from me and yet with whom I'm in covenant
- 12:34relationship. It's an expression of love, and
- 12:38love is always self giving. Not self-serving, not self
- 12:46pleasing, self giving. And this is part of how marriage
- 12:52images the Trinity, right? The the, the intimate
- 12:56relationship within God himself, a Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
- 13:01and how we as the church image the relationship between Christ
- 13:08and the right. And so Paul begins to describe,
- 13:12if we were to continue into Chapter 7, he begins to describe
- 13:16the self giving nature of marriage and how we aren't
- 13:20called to withhold ourselves from one other, but to offer
- 13:23ourselves to each other, to to be faithful to our spouses.
- 13:28But it's interesting to me there in Chapter 7, Paul's clear to
- 13:33say that sex is not what makes us human, right?
- 13:39Sex isn't part of our full expression of our humanity.
- 13:43It's not certainly not the fullest expression of what it is
- 13:47to be human. You don't have to be married to
- 13:52express the image of God. In fact, Paul says it's actually
- 13:58good for people to be celibate to stay single if they can.
- 14:03He even goes so far in Chapter 7 as to imply that there may even
- 14:07be a spiritual gift of celibacy, that God gives some people a
- 14:13special grace to remain single. Because singleness can be a
- 14:19beautiful picture of a life entirely devoted to God, a life
- 14:26entirely available to God and whatever he would ask.
- 14:30Especially in a world that makes so much of romantic
- 14:34relationships, a single person has an opportunity to be
- 14:39wholeheartedly available to God in a way that a married person
- 14:43or a parent cannot be. A single person can be a living
- 14:49image of devotion to God. And remember Jesus.
- 14:54Remember that guy? 100% human, right?
- 14:59That's what we believe. He was 100% human, and yet he
- 15:05remained single. He remained available to God his
- 15:09entire life. His celibacy never lessened his
- 15:14humanity. The American church hasn't done
- 15:18a good job of honoring singleness the way the Bible
- 15:22does, the way other traditions and other periods of church
- 15:25history have. And I think that's to our
- 15:28detriment. We haven't lifted up this this
- 15:32way that God's image is expressed within the community
- 15:37of the church. And no matter whether we're
- 15:41called to singleness or or we choose to marry, we're all
- 15:46called to live within the same biblical sexual ethic, right?
- 15:51Which looks like faithfulness in marriage and celibacy in
- 15:55singleness. Those are the options.
- 15:59Faithfulness in marriage, celibacy in singleness.
- 16:03This is where the call to deny yourself is the rubber hitting
- 16:08the road. You don't belong to yourself,
- 16:16you belong to Jesus. And so sexually, anything
- 16:24outside the bounds of marriage must be denied if we're going to
- 16:31follow the way of Jesus. So what do we do with this
- 16:36information? What does it look like to live
- 16:41within this call to deny ourselves as it regards our
- 16:46sexuality? Well, maybe.
- 16:49Maybe this is new information to you.
- 16:52Maybe. Maybe you've never heard a
- 16:55pastor preach on sex from the pulpit.
- 16:58I was trying to think, I don't know that I have, not as clearly
- 17:04as I have today. Maybe you didn't understand
- 17:09before this morning that that our culture's view of sexual
- 17:13expression isn't compatible with following the way of Jesus, but
- 17:18now you do. Maybe you're realizing that
- 17:23you've been living outside the bounds of a Christian sexual
- 17:27ethic, and you're feeling the grace of conviction working on
- 17:31your heart this morning. Maybe you did know.
- 17:34Maybe you did know, and you've been choosing to live there
- 17:39anyway. If that's you, the invitation is
- 17:44to repent, right? To turn away from that life, To
- 17:49turn to Jesus, to confess your sin, whatever it is, right?
- 17:55Maybe it's pornography. Maybe it's sleeping with a
- 17:59girlfriend or boyfriend. Maybe you're having an affair
- 18:01this morning. Repent.
- 18:05Confess so that you can be healed and forgiven.
- 18:11And maybe you're sitting here this morning and, and at some
- 18:15point in life you've found yourself on the receiving end of
- 18:19someone else's sexual sin. You've been abused, you've been
- 18:25betrayed and cheated on. I'm so sorry if that is the
- 18:31case. It's not what God intended.
- 18:37I've seen the impact that sexual sin has on people.
- 18:42Nothing can undo what's been done to you, but healing is
- 18:49possible. Jesus came to bind up the broken
- 18:53hearted. But Jesus isn't going to force
- 18:57that healing on you. And it doesn't mean it won't
- 19:01take some work on your part to pursue that healing.
- 19:07Would you ask Jesus this morning to bring healing to this aspect
- 19:12of your life, to bring healing to your sexuality?
- 19:15Would you give him permission to work in this part of your heart?
- 19:22Maybe there's something else, something else that God has been
- 19:26speaking to your heart about this morning.
- 19:31Maybe you're unhappy in your singleness and you long not just
- 19:36for for sex, but for intimate companionship.
- 19:41Maybe you've been using sex as a way to manipulate your spouse
- 19:47rather than offering yourself to them.
- 19:53Maybe Jesus is speaking to you and you want to come and commit
- 19:57yourself, or to commit yourself again to following Jesus in your
- 20:02sexuality. You don't have to live the way
- 20:04the world tells us we have to live.
- 20:07Maybe it's something I haven't even mentioned or touched on
- 20:11this morning. Maybe you need to come and talk
- 20:13to Jesus about it, and you need to let Him talk to you and speak
- 20:20what is true over you rather than the lies of the enemy.
- 20:28These are things we in the church aren't particularly
- 20:31comfortable talking about, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't.
- 20:37And when Jesus laid it on my heart to preach this during this
- 20:43season, I said, really, do I have to?
- 20:51But the only one that secrecy helps is the enemy of our souls.
- 20:59Our sexuality is an area that Jesus wants to bring freedom and
- 21:03healing to, and that only happens when things are brought
- 21:08into the light. So I'm going to pray for us this
- 21:13morning. Then we're going to sing the
- 21:14hymn Have Thine Own Way. And if you sense the Spirit
- 21:21speaking to you this morning, I want to invite you to come and
- 21:27meet with him at the altar. Meet God at the altar if you
- 21:32don't sense the Spirit speaking to you this morning.
- 21:37One, I want to challenge you to ask again, But then two, I want
- 21:43to invite you to pray for those who God is speaking to.
- 21:48Right. This isn't a time for judgement.
- 21:50You don't know why anyone might come up to the altar rail.
- 21:56I'm not asking you to judge. I'm asking you to pray for them.
- 21:59It's time for healing to come, for Jesus to minister to
- 22:04people's hearts. And so if Jesus is speaking to
- 22:08you, would you come and speak with him?
- 22:13Let's pray together, Jesus. We are so grateful that there is
- 22:22not an area of our life that you don't care about and there's not
- 22:28a person in this room or watching online or listening
- 22:32later who you do not love with an everlasting love.
- 22:42Oh, God, we recognize, we realize that in this most
- 22:48intimate area of our lives, we've not been untouched by the
- 22:57effects of sin, whether that's our own sin, sins of the world,
- 23:06or the sins of others done to us.
- 23:12And so we come this morning, Jesus asking, would you bring
- 23:18healing? We know your offer is
- 23:23forgiveness all right, if we would confess our sins.
- 23:27You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
- 23:30cleanse us from all unrighteous. You can help us to start afresh
- 23:37today. So, Jesus, in this time, in this
- 23:42moment, would you come? Would you break the chains of
- 23:48oppression and addiction? Would you speak healing into
- 23:58people's hearts? Would you come and convict us,
- 24:07lead us in your kindness to repentance, that in turning to
- 24:14You we can turn away from sin and death and we can find life
- 24:21that is truly life. Jesus, we come to you this
- 24:28morning. Would you have your own way with
- 24:34us? That's our prayer even as we
- 24:39begin to sing. Jesus, come and have your way in
- 24:42this place.
