- 0:27Hey, everybody. Good morning from the porch.
- 0:30And sitting next to me is Beaufort.
- 0:33And there's a reason for this today.
- 0:35So we are going to talk about something that big, huge lesson
- 0:40that Beaufort taught me. And I Again, these things show
- 0:44up over and over in your life and you just don't realize how
- 0:47much your emotions take over. But this is a doozy.
- 0:52So Beaufort is an American bulldog and he's about 110 lbs
- 0:58of love. As I always like to say.
- 1:00He's solid muscle and a big goofball, but super protective
- 1:06of me. He's my shadow.
- 1:07He's with me all the time. If I am gardening, he is leaning
- 1:11against me. If I am working in the chicken
- 1:15coop, he sits guard at the door like wherever I am.
- 1:18When I walk all day long talking to all my clients on our, you
- 1:22know, I've got a path, a trail around the property and I can
- 1:26walk the property all, all the time.
- 1:28He's with me and it never fails. He'll go no matter what the
- 1:31weather is. If I said to him right now it's
- 1:34raining, but if I said to him we're going to go for a walk
- 1:36around, he'd walk with me in the rain.
- 1:38My other dog, Lucy, she's just not interested in that and she's
- 1:41a Princess and she doesn't leave.
- 1:43But Beaufort, he's a different kind of soul and he's and he's
- 1:46very expressive. He's got big expressions on his
- 1:49face and you know what he's thinking.
- 1:51You can just tell. And for those of you who are on
- 1:54this podcast, I'm quite sure the majority of you are animal
- 1:58lovers because we tend to attract what we are in this
- 2:01case. And I am a huge animal lover as
- 2:03all of you know, hence the chicken coop.
- 2:05So Beaufort is a drooler. When he has breakfast, he's
- 2:12without fail he will eat his breakfast, eat it or whatever.
- 2:16He eats his dinner or whenever he drinks.
- 2:18Actually, he's always got water coming out of his mouth.
- 2:22It's like he doesn't stop. He just walks away.
- 2:25And it makes me crazy. Like I can't even express the
- 2:30level of crazy that it makes me so crazy that we have a term for
- 2:35it called drinking and dripping in our house, Beaver.
- 2:38It's drinking and dripping and it's just everywhere, and he'll
- 2:41walk and it's just down this path.
- 2:43Now, why is this so important and why are we talking about
- 2:46this? Because here's the situation.
- 2:49It shouldn't make me crazy. He's a dog.
- 2:51He's allowed to drink out of a bowl.
- 2:53Clearly he is allowed to go ahead and drink out of a bowl of
- 2:57water and have it go wherever because he's my dog.
- 3:01I picked him. I knew the risk of what the dog
- 3:04was when I got him because I had one before.
- 3:07Now he didn't have quite the same face because there are
- 3:09different types of American Bulldogs.
- 3:12Mine has. Beaufort has a little bit more
- 3:14of a squished in face to my first one.
- 3:16Bishop did. But it's just it's just part of
- 3:19having that big face. So I know that and it it got to
- 3:24the point I was I have a stack of rags.
- 3:27I bought a big bag of rags at Costco so that they're just dog
- 3:31rags and I keep them in my laundry room and I use them and
- 3:35next to his, you come to my house to visit, you've got a
- 3:37bowl of water, the bowl of food. It's on their tray and there's a
- 3:40stack probably of three or four white rags at any given time
- 3:45that are sitting there so that I can grab a rag and wipe his
- 3:48face. It reminded me of having still
- 3:51reminds me of having like a baby when you have that little wipe
- 3:56the burp up wipe all the time with you.
- 3:58It's that's what it was and still is and so about probably a
- 4:03month or so ago. Maybe two months ago.
- 4:05I can't remember the exact time frame of it, but I started to
- 4:09get like, I noticed that it was making me crazy and I really had
- 4:14to like say, OK, what is going on here?
- 4:16I've got to rewire this. This is, this is not OK because
- 4:19I could feel my anxiety. Like if I was doing anything,
- 4:23anything, I would hear him and I would go nuts trying to get to
- 4:28him. I've gotten up out of bed
- 4:30because I could hear him drinking and I would run down to
- 4:33wipe it up before he made a mess on the floor.
- 4:35That's how it was getting to me. So I had to do something.
- 4:39So I said, OK, I'm going to rewire this and I'm going to
- 4:42recognize that this is a ridiculous response.
- 4:44My Certainty girl is freaking out because of her cleanliness
- 4:47needs. So we're going to rewire this
- 4:50for myself. And every time I hear him doing
- 4:53that, yes, I'm going to go wipe it up.
- 4:54Yes, I'm still going to go wipe it up if I hear it.
- 4:56But what I'm going to do, instead of just wiping his face
- 4:59quickly because I know it annoys him, he gives me the look.
- 5:02I can see the look on his face. I'm going to kiss him on the top
- 5:04of the head while I do it too. So I'm going to rewire it for
- 5:07myself and I'm going to rewire it for him and I'm going to tell
- 5:10him I love him every single time I do it.
- 5:13In no short order, it has diffused and it does not bother
- 5:18me the way that it did. And he's clearly not bothered by
- 5:21it anymore because he puts his he picks his head up.
- 5:24Before he used to hang his head low and try to get away from me,
- 5:27but now he knows I'm going to give him a hug and a kiss and he
- 5:30feels like, OK, this is good. So the reason I'm sharing this
- 5:34all with you is because I want you to know you can rewire
- 5:37things now. Am I still wiping up the water?
- 5:39You betcha. Because it doesn't look good on
- 5:42the floor, and it makes me nuts because of that one little thing
- 5:45of like, oh, I don't want to step in the wet water, but it
- 5:48doesn't make me nuts at the level it was.
- 5:50It's not like I'm running for it.
- 5:51If I miss it and I see it afterwards, I'm OK and I can
- 5:55clean it up. But it's a point that I want to
- 5:58make to you guys, because sometimes these things are
- 6:00insidious. These little weird quirks of our
- 6:04anxiety, of our uncertainty, girls of our frustrations, they
- 6:10they're insidious. They're everywhere.
- 6:12And you have to look for them. And no one would have ever
- 6:14thought that I had one in a bowl of water and hearing water being
- 6:19sloshed up by a dog. But I did, So I had to rewire
- 6:23it. So think about where are yours
- 6:25and start that rewiring. Come up with a good reframe like
- 6:28I did. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:30you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 6:33Bye.
