- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Radioized Children's Story Hour. As a reminder,
- 0:05Speaker 1: realize a reading service intended for people who are blind
- 0:09Speaker 1: or of other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:11Speaker 1: pre material. Today we will be reading from various books
- 0:16Speaker 1: on summer and summer activities. Your reader today is Diane.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Our first book is called tim in the Summer Olympics,
- 0:24Speaker 1: The Science behind Volleyball. It was published by Poego Books,
- 0:31Speaker 1: which is published by Jump. It has a copyright year
- 0:34Speaker 1: of twenty twenty and the author of the book is
- 0:39Speaker 1: Jenny Fretlin van Vorse. Chapter one, Bump, set, Spike. Let's
- 0:46Speaker 1: play volleyball. It is a popular sport around the world.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It has been part of the Olympics since nineteen sixty four.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Olympic volleyball players are some of the best. Did you
- 0:57Speaker 1: know they use physics to win The volleyball players understand
- 1:02Speaker 1: the forces acting on the ball's flight. They use them
- 1:05Speaker 1: to control the ball. This player jumps up above the net.
- 1:09Speaker 1: He spikes the ball down. He applies forced to move
- 1:12Speaker 1: the ball. This is thrust. Drag works against thrust. It
- 1:17Speaker 1: slows the ball's flight. Did you know there are two
- 1:22Speaker 1: Olympic volleyball events. Beach and indoor. There are many differences
- 1:27Speaker 1: between the two, like what the scoring court, size, number
- 1:31Speaker 1: of players, and size and firmness of the ball are
- 1:35Speaker 1: all different. Lift keeps the ball in the air. It
- 1:38Speaker 1: is balanced by gravity. This force pulls the ball down.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Chapter two start with a serve Olympians she use physics
- 1:48Speaker 1: when they serve. How one way is by applying topspin.
- 1:54Speaker 1: The server tosses the ball up, She snaps her wrist
- 1:57Speaker 1: and sends the ball over the nets forward as it flies,
- 2:02Speaker 1: lift quickly decreases. The ball drops just past the net.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Top spin is a fast serve, but it is predictable.
- 2:10Speaker 1: The other team knows what the ball will do. The
- 2:14Speaker 1: float serve is unpredictable. The server tosses the ball up,
- 2:18Speaker 1: she jumps and slaps it flat with a palm of
- 2:21Speaker 1: her hand. The ball does not spin. Drag and lift
- 2:25Speaker 1: affect the flight differently each time. The other team cannot
- 2:30Speaker 1: predict where the ball will land. In beach volleyball, the
- 2:33Speaker 1: wind makes the ball's path even harder to predict. Did
- 2:38Speaker 1: you know? As of twenty nineteen, the fastest serve on
- 2:42Speaker 1: record was eighty three miles per hour zoom. Chapter three,
- 2:48Speaker 1: Motion and Action volleyball's fast paced. The player's volley back
- 2:54Speaker 1: and forth, bumps, set, spike score. The ball is always
- 2:58Speaker 1: moving during play. This means the laws of motion affect
- 3:01Speaker 1: the ball. How a player serves. The ball flies in
- 3:06Speaker 1: a low arc over the net. Why a moving object
- 3:10Speaker 1: moves in one direction It only changes if another force
- 3:13Speaker 1: ix on it. The ball clears the net. But wait.
- 3:16Speaker 1: A player on the other team jumps. She blocks the ball.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Her force changes the ball's paths. The ball goes back
- 3:24Speaker 1: across the net. The setter sets the ball, her teammate
- 3:27Speaker 1: jumps to spike it. Did you know? As of twenty nineteen,
- 3:32Speaker 1: the highest jump in the Olympic volleyball was made by
- 3:37Speaker 1: Leon L. Marshall. He played for Cuba. He jumped four
- 3:41Speaker 1: point two feet into the air. These players jump, another
- 3:47Speaker 1: law of motion comes into play. They apply force to
- 3:50Speaker 1: the ground with their feet. The ground returns the force.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Downward force turns into upward force. They are pushed into
- 3:58Speaker 1: the air. The harder they push, the higher they jump.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Volleyball is fun. Olympians wing go with physics. How can
- 4:06Speaker 1: you use it to play? Our next book is titled
- 4:11Speaker 1: Stem in the Summer Olympics, The Science behind tennis and
- 4:15Speaker 1: it was published by poe Go Books, which is published
- 4:19Speaker 1: by Jump. It has caught the right ear of twenty
- 4:24Speaker 1: twenty and the author is Jenny Fretlin van Vers. Chapter one,
- 4:29Speaker 1: Making a racket pal balls fly, racket swing Tennis is
- 4:34Speaker 1: fast paced. It is exciting. It can also be a
- 4:37Speaker 1: science lesson. An Olympic tennis player relies on a racket.
- 4:41Speaker 1: It is used to create a powerful stroke. The ball
- 4:45Speaker 1: hits the racket strings, it flies off. Tennis rackets should
- 4:49Speaker 1: be stiff. Why when Olympians hit the ball the racket
- 4:53Speaker 1: frame vibrates. This absorbs the ball's energy. The ball slows down.
- 4:59Speaker 1: A stiffer frame vibrates less. It absorbs less energy. The
- 5:03Speaker 1: ball keeps more energy. It can fly faster and farther.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Strings help too. How when a ball hits the strings,
- 5:10Speaker 1: they stretch. They store some of the ball's kinetic energy.
- 5:14Speaker 1: They quickly return the energy back to the ball. This
- 5:17Speaker 1: is called the snap back effect. The more the strings stretch,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the more power they store and give back. Did you
- 5:24Speaker 1: know good rackets help players, but players provide the real power.
- 5:29Speaker 1: When a player serves, the entire body provides force. The
- 5:33Speaker 1: resulting serve can be very fast. The world's fastest tennis
- 5:37Speaker 1: serve was clocked at one hundred sixty three point seven
- 5:41Speaker 1: miles per hour. Chapter two I On the ball, the
- 5:47Speaker 1: tennis balls soares air slows it down. This is called drag. Large,
- 5:52Speaker 1: fluffier tennis balls have more drag. More drag means a
- 5:55Speaker 1: slower flight. This gives the other player more time to prepare.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Gravity plays on the ball too. Players use this force
- 6:04Speaker 1: to help their game. How they hit with topsmen. This
- 6:08Speaker 1: creates a downward force. Any shorter shot batsmen has the
- 6:11Speaker 1: opposite result. It creates an upward force. It allows the
- 6:15Speaker 1: ball to sell long. These strokes enhance or less than
- 6:19Speaker 1: the force of gravity. Chapter three. On the court slam,
- 6:24Speaker 1: the ball hits the court, drag is replaced by friction.
- 6:27Speaker 1: A rough surface means greater friction like what clay courts.
- 6:32Speaker 1: These are called slow courts. The ball loses speed on
- 6:36Speaker 1: its bounce. Other courts create less friction. The ball loses
- 6:40Speaker 1: less speed on grass courts. These are called fast courts.
- 6:45Speaker 1: What do they use in the Olympics. Hard courts? These
- 6:48Speaker 1: are asphalt or concrete. The surface is neither slow nor fast,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but it does not cushion players. Speed did you know.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Courts become faster the longer they are used. Why youse
- 7:01Speaker 1: smooths the surface. Tennis players run and jump. Their feet
- 7:05Speaker 1: apply force to the court an equal opposite force ix
- 7:09Speaker 1: on the player. This is a reaction force. It can
- 7:12Speaker 1: cause injury. Special shoes cushion the player's feet. They reduced
- 7:17Speaker 1: the effect of the reaction force. Did you know? Tennis
- 7:21Speaker 1: was first played at the Olympics in eighteen ninety six.
- 7:24Speaker 1: At first, only men played. Women could compete starting in
- 7:28Speaker 1: nineteen oh eight. Olympians know the science behind tennis. They
- 7:33Speaker 1: use it to take home go Can you use science
- 7:36Speaker 1: to win big? Our next book is called Stem in
- 7:40Speaker 1: the Summer Olympics, The Science behind Gymnastics, and it was
- 7:44Speaker 1: published by Pogo Books, which are published by Jump. It
- 7:48Speaker 1: has a copywriter of twenty twenty and the author of
- 7:52Speaker 1: our book is Jenny Fretlin van Verst. Chapter one Flips
- 7:59Speaker 1: and Physics Flips, twist turns. Olympic gymnasts use physics to
- 8:03Speaker 1: win big. Rithmatic gymnasts perform four routines. Only women compete.
- 8:09Speaker 1: They use props like balls, hoops or ribbons. Both men
- 8:13Speaker 1: and women compete in artistic gymnastics. These routines in apparatuss
- 8:19Speaker 1: like what rings, vaults, bars, and palmel horses? Did you know?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Artistic gymnasts are scored in two ways. Judges scored the
- 8:30Speaker 1: difficulty of their routines. Harder skills can earn more points.
- 8:34Speaker 1: They're also scored on how well they perform their skills.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Chapter two, Flying high. It helps gennasts to be short.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Why their center of gravity is lower. The lower on
- 8:46Speaker 1: the body, the easier it is to balance. She sticks
- 8:49Speaker 1: her landing. Bending her knees helped. How it lowered her
- 8:54Speaker 1: center of gravity even more. Bent knees helped gennats jump higher. Two.
- 8:59Speaker 1: How they apply force to the ground. This is an
- 9:02Speaker 1: action force is return with the reaction force. It pushes
- 9:07Speaker 1: the gymnas up with more force. They fly higher into
- 9:10Speaker 1: the air. Did you know? Gymnasts was in the first
- 9:14Speaker 1: modern Olympics in eighteen ninety six. Events included rock lifting,
- 9:19Speaker 1: club swinging. Swimming was a gymnastics event in nineteen twenty two.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Floor utines are done on a special floor is supported
- 9:29Speaker 1: by springs. They increase the floor's reaction force. The gymnast
- 9:33Speaker 1: bounces higher, he has more time to flip and spend
- 9:37Speaker 1: The springs also help absorb shop. This keeps athletes from
- 9:41Speaker 1: getting hurt. Did you know Olympic gymnasts gets some serious air?
- 9:46Speaker 1: How high can they jump? Almost ten feet high? During skills?
- 9:52Speaker 1: Springs help in the vault events. To gymnasts run toward
- 9:56Speaker 1: the vault, they bounce off of a springboard. This increase
- 10:00Speaker 1: the reaction force they are launched onto the vault. Gymnastics
- 10:06Speaker 1: would not be possible without gravity. See the uneven bars
- 10:09Speaker 1: at the top. She has potential energy she swings. Gravity
- 10:14Speaker 1: changes this energy. It turns to kinetic energy. All objects
- 10:18Speaker 1: in motion have this bar routine requires speeds. How do
- 10:24Speaker 1: genas gain it? One kinetic energy helps the genas swinging
- 10:29Speaker 1: around the bar. Two, the genas bends his knees. This
- 10:32Speaker 1: brings his center of gravity closer to the bar. Three,
- 10:36Speaker 1: the genast extends his legs again. He swings around again
- 10:40Speaker 1: and dismounts. The extra speed allows him more time in
- 10:43Speaker 1: the air for skills Chapter three. A grip on friction.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Friction helps in many events. It helps gymnasts keep their
- 10:52Speaker 1: grip on what parallel bars, pommel horses rings, But too
- 10:57Speaker 1: much friction can be a problem. Friction turns into heat
- 11:02Speaker 1: when a gymnast spins. Friction makes his hands hot. It
- 11:06Speaker 1: might keep him from swinging freely. Artistic gymnasts work to
- 11:10Speaker 1: control friction. They powder their hands with chalk. They wear
- 11:14Speaker 1: grips too. They get the grip they need without the heat.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Olympians use physics with every move. It helps them win goes.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Our next book is titled My First Swim Class and
- 11:28Speaker 1: it was published by Simon's Spotlight, an imprint of Simon
- 11:31Speaker 1: and Schuster's Children Publishing Division. Has a copyright year of
- 11:36Speaker 1: twenty eighteen and the author of the book is Alissa Saton.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Can't be selly. It is time for my first swim class.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I am ready to begin. I have my swim cat,
- 11:49Speaker 1: my goggles and my suit. I am ready to swim.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Keeping safe in the water is our number one rule.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Some classes get special belts to help us in the pool. First,
- 12:01Speaker 1: we practice kicking. I try big kicks and small. We
- 12:05Speaker 1: keep our legs straight. There are splashes for all. We
- 12:09Speaker 1: hold our hands in the air like big round spoons.
- 12:12Speaker 1: We scoop and we paddle. It will be full time soon,
- 12:16Speaker 1: time to go swimming. We are ready. We shout. I
- 12:21Speaker 1: swim across the pool. Coach Tan helps me out. I
- 12:25Speaker 1: put my face in the water. I blow bubbles like
- 12:28Speaker 1: a fish. Low blow blow Blowish, swish, swish. We pretend
- 12:33Speaker 1: to be starfish. I try to float on my back.
- 12:36Speaker 1: My arms and legs are white. Hooray, I can do that.
- 12:41Speaker 1: We scoop and we paddle. We practice kicking and floating
- 12:44Speaker 1: to We can jump into the water like leaping frogs.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Do splash. After lots of practice, we will swim like
- 12:52Speaker 1: dolphins in the sea. For now, we get warm towels.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Swim class is for me. Do you want to learn
- 13:01Speaker 1: to swim? Find a grown up to help you practice
- 13:04Speaker 1: the swimming strokes in this book. But remember, never go
- 13:07Speaker 1: to a pool unless a grownup has agreed to keep
- 13:10Speaker 1: you safe. Even people who know how to swim need lifeguards.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Let's get ready. Are you ready for swim Class? One?
- 13:19Speaker 1: Cap and goggles. A swim cap keeps your hair out
- 13:22Speaker 1: of your face. The goggles help keep water out of
- 13:25Speaker 1: your eyes too. Safety belt. Some classes may use the
- 13:29Speaker 1: safety belt, others may not. Your instructor will know just
- 13:32Speaker 1: what you need. Three a lifeguard. Be sure to wait
- 13:36Speaker 1: until grown up invites you into the pool. That's a
- 13:39Speaker 1: great and safe pool rule. Practice One kick your legs.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Sit on the edge of the pool. Keep your legs
- 13:47Speaker 1: as straight as railroad tracks. Shoot you can you kick
- 13:51Speaker 1: and make a big splash. Try a small splash too. Two.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Scoop and paddle. Hold your hands in their curve your
- 13:59Speaker 1: finger so they are nice and round like a spoon.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Scoop and paddle your hands through the water. Great job.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Bubble time and backfloat. One bubble time. Blow blow, blow blow?
- 14:12Speaker 1: Can you blow bubbles like a fish? Blow? Blow? Blow?
- 14:16Speaker 1: Can you blow even bigger bubbles? Two? Backfloat. Rest on
- 14:21Speaker 1: your back in the water. Stretch your arms and legs
- 14:23Speaker 1: out wide. Be sure to keep your tonguey lifted up
- 14:26Speaker 1: to the sky. Keep your chin up to Floating is fun.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Let's swim. One. Wait wait until the coach says it
- 14:37Speaker 1: is your turn. Two. Start once you're in the pool,
- 14:41Speaker 1: keep your legs out behind you. Three swim, keep your
- 14:44Speaker 1: feet and paddle with your arms. You did it. Swim
- 14:48Speaker 1: class is fun. Every time you come to swim class
- 14:51Speaker 1: you will learn something new. For now, dry off with
- 14:54Speaker 1: a warm towel and give your teacher a high five.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You did it. You are large to swim. Our next
- 15:02Speaker 1: book is titled The Berenstein Bears Summer Fun, and it
- 15:06Speaker 1: includes three stories. The Berenstein Bears go to Camp, The
- 15:10Speaker 1: Berensteen Bears go out for the team. The Berenstein Bears
- 15:14Speaker 1: get their kicks. It was published by Random House, a
- 15:19Speaker 1: division of Penguin Random House. It has a copyright year
- 15:24Speaker 1: of nineteen eighty two to twenty twenty and the authors
- 15:28Speaker 1: of the book are Sin and Jan Berenstein. The Berenstein
- 15:32Speaker 1: Bears go to camp. It's vacation time. Hooray, hooray. Let's
- 15:36Speaker 1: spend it outdoors. Let's get away. Is the last day
- 15:40Speaker 1: of school in the beginning of vacation, that wonderful time
- 15:43Speaker 1: when little bears could sit around doing absolutely nothing. Brother
- 15:47Speaker 1: Bear and Sister Bears shouted goodbye to teach her Jane,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and hopped onto the bus for the happy trip home. Well,
- 15:54Speaker 1: asked Mama Bear, after a day or so a vacation,
- 15:57Speaker 1: are you enjoying seeing around doing nothing? It's great, says
- 16:01Speaker 1: sister Absolutely, said brother. There's just one trouble with it.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Ada's sister, there's nothing to do here. Take a look
- 16:10Speaker 1: at this, said Mama as she reached for something that
- 16:13Speaker 1: had come in the meal. This is what it looked
- 16:16Speaker 1: like tires sitting around doing nothing. Come to Grizzly Bob
- 16:20Speaker 1: Stay camp. Some are fun for cobs of all ages. Swimming, canoeing,
- 16:26Speaker 1: arts and crafts, sports and games, nature study, fully supervised
- 16:31Speaker 1: and don't forget, or exciting, overnight campfire, powwow, and sleep out.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Some of the things looked interesting, but brother wondered what
- 16:40Speaker 1: fully supervised meant, and sister wasn't so sure about that
- 16:43Speaker 1: overnight sleepout. It sounded a little scary. Where's this camp,
- 16:48Speaker 1: asked sister. Not far, answered Mama, how will we get there?
- 16:52Speaker 1: Brother wanted to know. A bus comes for you in
- 16:55Speaker 1: the morning and brings you home in the afternoon. Sounds
- 16:58Speaker 1: a little like schools, said brother. Well think about it,
- 17:02Speaker 1: said the cups, and went back to doing nothing, well,
- 17:05Speaker 1: not exactly nothing. They picked a few wildflowers, chased a
- 17:09Speaker 1: few butterflies, turned over a few rocks, and thought about it. Mama,
- 17:14Speaker 1: could we try Grizzly Bob's day camp just to see
- 17:16Speaker 1: if we like it, they asked. Of course, said Mama.
- 17:20Speaker 1: A couple of mornings later, brother and sister were in camp,
- 17:25Speaker 1: shorts and t shirts already and waiting. When the bus came.
- 17:28Speaker 1: It didn't look much like the school bus, and Grizzly
- 17:32Speaker 1: Bob didn't look much like teacher Jane, and the camp
- 17:35Speaker 1: didn't look anything like school. Grizzly Bob had built his
- 17:39Speaker 1: camp beside a lake at the edge of the forest.
- 17:42Speaker 1: There were log buildings, a flag po flying the camp flag,
- 17:46Speaker 1: a big bulletin board with the camp rules. There certainly
- 17:49Speaker 1: were a lot of rules. Some interesting pats roped in
- 17:53Speaker 1: place to swim. There was even a big red canoe.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Bob had made name tags for the cup. Your camp
- 18:01Speaker 1: mates now, so you better get to know each other,
- 18:04Speaker 1: he said, and he took them on a tour of
- 18:06Speaker 1: the camp. There was an office with a desk where
- 18:09Speaker 1: he did his paperwork, and a first aid corner full
- 18:12Speaker 1: of bandages and things for cuts and bruises. There was
- 18:15Speaker 1: a w rec hall to go into when it rained.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Wreck was short for recreation. There was a picnic place
- 18:21Speaker 1: and a barbecue pit where they roasted hot dogs for lunch.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Sister burned hers a little, but she traded with another
- 18:28Speaker 1: Cup who liked to burnt hot dogs. Bob Announ said.
- 18:31Speaker 1: After lunch they would all climb up Spook Hill to
- 18:34Speaker 1: the very top at Square Rock. The special place where
- 18:37Speaker 1: they would have their end of camp pow out and
- 18:40Speaker 1: sleep out. It was quite a climb that evening. Mom
- 18:44Speaker 1: and Papa there were eager to know how the cups
- 18:47Speaker 1: like camp. It was okay, said brother, but they sure
- 18:50Speaker 1: had a lot of rules. It was all right, a
- 18:53Speaker 1: great sister. They sure had plenty of vantages and steamy
- 18:57Speaker 1: stuff for cuts. But what they were both thinking about
- 19:00Speaker 1: with skull rock in that end of camp sleepout, especially sister.
- 19:05Speaker 1: The second day was different. Brother had a great day.
- 19:07Speaker 1: He passed the swimming test and was allowed to ride
- 19:10Speaker 1: in the canoe. Sister didn't have such a good day.
- 19:13Speaker 1: She played dodgeball in some of the cups throw pretty hard.
- 19:17Speaker 1: The third day, sister had fun. She got a star
- 19:20Speaker 1: for birch picture frame she made in Arts and crafts.
- 19:23Speaker 1: The brother hurt his knee in the wheelbarrel race. The
- 19:26Speaker 1: fourth day, both of them had fun, and every day
- 19:29Speaker 1: after that so much fun that they forgot about skull
- 19:32Speaker 1: rock and the sleepout almost Papa found sleeping bags that
- 19:37Speaker 1: he and Mama had used on their honeymoon, and when
- 19:40Speaker 1: the camp bus came on the morning of the big night,
- 19:42Speaker 1: brother and sister were ready sort of The climb up
- 19:46Speaker 1: Spook Hill wasn't so hard this time, Even with backpacks.
- 19:49Speaker 1: The cups were strong and tough from their summer of camping.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Tomorrow would be phil Day, the last day of camp,
- 19:56Speaker 1: when their parents would come to watch their games and
- 19:58Speaker 1: contest and see awards given out. But for now, all
- 20:02Speaker 1: the cups could think about was the big Sleepout was
- 20:05Speaker 1: just beginning to get dark when they read Skull Rock Grizzly.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Bob built a campfire, then he went into a small cave.
- 20:13Speaker 1: When he came out, he was dressed in a beautiful
- 20:15Speaker 1: Indian costume. Then the cups sat in a semicircle and
- 20:19Speaker 1: the pow wow began. Bob told them old Indian legends
- 20:24Speaker 1: of the great animal spirits, the story of the great
- 20:26Speaker 1: Grizzly as big as a mountain, the story eagle who
- 20:29Speaker 1: filled the sky, and the mighty salmon whose colors made
- 20:32Speaker 1: the rainbow. As Bob told the old stories, the cups
- 20:35Speaker 1: could almost see the wonderful creatures in the fire lit
- 20:39Speaker 1: smoke as he curled up into the night sky. After
- 20:43Speaker 1: the pow wow, they had coco and honeybread. Then they
- 20:46Speaker 1: curled up in their sleeping bags, and soon they were
- 20:49Speaker 1: all fast asleep, even sister. The next day, brother and
- 20:53Speaker 1: sister did very well in the field day games and contest.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Brother won a trophy for finishing second in the dash
- 20:59Speaker 1: and got medals for the dead Bear's float and for
- 21:02Speaker 1: her beat belt. It was almost end of summer. School
- 21:06Speaker 1: would be starting a couple of weeks. Well, ask Papa,
- 21:10Speaker 1: how did you like camp? It was great, said brother,
- 21:13Speaker 1: hugging his trophy. It was great, agreed sister, wearing her medals. Crowley.
- 21:18Speaker 1: But you know something, after Grizzly Bob's day camp, school
- 21:23Speaker 1: will be like a vacation. The Bear's team. Bears go
- 21:27Speaker 1: out for the team. When little Bear's first show a
- 21:31Speaker 1: will to compete, it's hard for parents not to jump
- 21:33Speaker 1: in with both feet. Brother and sister Bear, who lived
- 21:37Speaker 1: with their mom and popping the Big treehouse down a
- 21:40Speaker 1: sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country, enjoyed the changing
- 21:44Speaker 1: seasons and the sports that went with them. Football and
- 21:48Speaker 1: soccer in the fall, basketball and ice hockey in the winter,
- 21:52Speaker 1: and their favorite baseball in the spring. As soon as
- 21:55Speaker 1: brother and sister felt the first warmth of the spring sun,
- 21:59Speaker 1: they got out their trusty ball bat and gloves and
- 22:02Speaker 1: began lumbering up for the season. They played pitch and
- 22:06Speaker 1: catch and practice batting while they even stayed up on
- 22:09Speaker 1: the rules of the game. Pretty Soon some of their
- 22:12Speaker 1: friends came to join them in the baseball fund. After
- 22:16Speaker 1: a while, Brother looked around and said, hey, I think
- 22:18Speaker 1: we have enough for a game. Let's go over to
- 22:21Speaker 1: Farmer Ben's back metal and choose up sides. Farmer Ben
- 22:25Speaker 1: was a good neighbor. He had been allowing cups to
- 22:28Speaker 1: play baseball in his medal for years. Of course, the
- 22:30Speaker 1: grassy metal wasn't a real baseball field, so there were
- 22:34Speaker 1: a few problems and some special ground rules. There were
- 22:37Speaker 1: no foul lines, just base paths worn by a year
- 22:41Speaker 1: after year of cups running the bases. There were a
- 22:43Speaker 1: lot of arguments about foul boss. There was a rule
- 22:46Speaker 1: against sliding into second base because second base was a rock,
- 22:50Speaker 1: and any ball that was hit into the duck pond
- 22:52Speaker 1: in left field was ground rule double in automatic time
- 22:56Speaker 1: out while they fished it out. But arguments rocks and
- 23:00Speaker 1: dug ponds didn't worry Brother, Sister and their friends. They
- 23:03Speaker 1: chose upsides and started playing the game. Sister had done
- 23:08Speaker 1: some growing since last season, and when she went to bed,
- 23:11Speaker 1: she whacked her very first ground rule double. All the
- 23:14Speaker 1: Cups and even the Ducks were surprised, and her knowledge
- 23:17Speaker 1: of the rules came in handy. When cousin Freddy forgot
- 23:20Speaker 1: to touch second base on his way to third, she
- 23:24Speaker 1: called for the ball tag second and declared him out.
- 23:27Speaker 1: He made a big fuss, but she pointed out that
- 23:29Speaker 1: those were the rules. Isn't that right? She asked Farmer Ben,
- 23:33Speaker 1: who was watching from the sideline. Right as rain said
- 23:37Speaker 1: Farmer Ben, the game moved right along until brother hit
- 23:41Speaker 1: a ball all the way into the knicks field and
- 23:43Speaker 1: Farmer Ben's go got it back so soon, asked Papa,
- 23:47Speaker 1: looking up from his paper as brother and sister troops
- 23:50Speaker 1: back home. Yep, says Sister, holding up the ball. Game
- 23:54Speaker 1: called off on account of Farmer Ben's goat chewing the
- 23:57Speaker 1: cover of the ball, but was pretty impressed when he
- 24:01Speaker 1: heard about brother sid and Sister's ground rule double. Seems
- 24:05Speaker 1: to me, said Papa, that you cups might want to
- 24:07Speaker 1: think about playing some real baseball on a real baseball field.
- 24:12Speaker 1: It says right here in the paper that the Bear
- 24:14Speaker 1: Country Cub League is going to be holding tryouts pretty soon.
- 24:18Speaker 1: You might want to sign up. Now, hold on, interrupted Mama.
- 24:22Speaker 1: It's a high powered league over there, and those triuts
- 24:25Speaker 1: involve quite a lot of pressure. Pressure as sister, what
- 24:29Speaker 1: do you mean, You'll be competing against lots of other
- 24:32Speaker 1: cups and not everybody is going to make the team,
- 24:35Speaker 1: said Mama. But you both play pretty well. She ate it,
- 24:38Speaker 1: so it's up to you. Want her to drive over
- 24:41Speaker 1: and take a look, said Papa. Wow, said brother when
- 24:45Speaker 1: he saw the cub League field. It's a real field
- 24:48Speaker 1: with fences and foulines and real bases and green stands
- 24:52Speaker 1: and everything, and the teams wore uniforms. Brother and sister
- 24:56Speaker 1: signed up right then and there. They got ready for
- 25:00Speaker 1: the trials by practicing. They practice fielding and hitting. Mama
- 25:04Speaker 1: showed him how to choke up on the bat against
- 25:07Speaker 1: fast pitching. They even practice bunching and base running. But
- 25:11Speaker 1: as try out day drew near, they begin to get
- 25:14Speaker 1: a little nervous. Trying to calm down, said Mama, It's
- 25:17Speaker 1: only a game. Besides, the worst that can happen is
- 25:20Speaker 1: that you won't make the team. You can always try
- 25:23Speaker 1: out again next year. No, that's not the worst that
- 25:26Speaker 1: can happen, said brother, looking gloomy. The worst that can
- 25:29Speaker 1: happen is if SIS makes the team, and I don't.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I consider that a sexist remark, snip sister angrily. Well
- 25:38Speaker 1: not completely, said mama. After all, brothers older than you,
- 25:41Speaker 1: and he's very proud of his baseball ability. I see
- 25:45Speaker 1: what you mean about pressure, said sister. We will finish
- 25:49Speaker 1: this story next time. This concludes your children's story I
