Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Good Hang.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I am so excited to talk to my TV husband,
- 0:04Speaker 2: the father of my triplets, Adam Scott, aka Ben Wyatt,
- 0:08Speaker 2: Leslie Knope's dream come true. Adam Scott, incredible actor, friend.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I just loved talking to him today, and we really
- 0:17Speaker 2: get into it. We talk about his love of U2.
- 0:20Speaker 2: We talk about how he weirdly likes to drive barefoot,
- 0:23Speaker 2: We talk about Parks and Rec, of course, and we
- 0:26Speaker 2: give you a lot of juicy stuff there. And I
- 0:28Speaker 2: try to figure out the crazy ending of Severance. And honestly,
- 0:32Speaker 2: I don't know what's going on. So I try to
- 0:35Speaker 2: have him help me understand that incredible show. But before
- 0:39Speaker 2: we start, we always like to talk to people who
- 0:43Speaker 2: know our guests and who want to give us a question.
- 0:45Speaker 2: And we're going to keep this Parks and Rec reunion
- 0:47Speaker 2: going today by talking to the one, the only Nick Offerman.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Nick, are you there?
- 0:56Speaker 2: This episode of Good Hang is presented by Walmart. Now,
- 0:59Speaker 2: everyone's talking about back-to-school outfits, and we all know how
- 1:01Speaker 2: expensive that can be to get the shoes and the
- 1:04Speaker 2: pants and the whole thing and the shirts and all
- 1:05Speaker 2: the things that you need. But Walmart has the latest
- 1:08Speaker 2: back-to-school styles for boys and girls starting at just $ 4.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Who knew?
- 1:14Speaker 2: So they've got graphic tees and joggers and colorful backpacks,
- 1:18Speaker 2: Spider-Man hoodies, keychain charms, flannel shirts.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Flare jeans, Crocs. Flare jeans are back. I love it.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Who knew?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Shop walmart.com to score their favorite back-to-school styles starting at
- 1:33Speaker 2: just $ 4.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Hi, Nick.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Hello.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Nick, you know what I love?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Every time I see you, I never know what kind
- 1:48Speaker 2: of hair situation I'm going to get with you. And
- 1:51Speaker 2: You and our guest today, Adam Scott, great heads of hair.
- 1:56Speaker 4: That's the main thing we have in common.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Super, super cute guy in one instance and donkey.
- 2:07Speaker 4: With great heads of hair.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Stop it. You are so handsome. I love to see you.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Since I've seen you last in person, it's been a minute.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And one of the best things about this podcast is
- 2:19Speaker 2: getting to talk to everybody again and spend time with everybody.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And today I'm spending time with the great Adam Scott.
- 2:27Speaker 4: The greatest.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Well, you know, we're going to talk about this when
- 2:30Speaker 1: we're in person someday together. But I think that, you know.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I know that the character of Ron Swanson is iconic
- 2:39Speaker 2: and it is in no small part to the way
- 2:44Speaker 2: that you transform yourself and the way you approach your work.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Because I met you in Chicago back in the day,
- 2:51Speaker 2: and you were coming to this work in a much more,
- 2:55Speaker 2: for lack of a better term, like more prepared actory space. And, and,
- 3:02Speaker 2: you're such a fine actor and I can't wait to
- 3:04Speaker 2: talk to.
- 3:04Speaker 1: You about it.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And Adam very similarly, like kind of came into the
- 3:08Speaker 2: biz from that space too.
- 3:11Speaker 4: He did. Uh, thank you. By the way, I did
- 3:13Speaker 4: not expect compliments today.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Well, your people emailed me and said I needed to
- 3:18Speaker 2: start with them.
- 3:19Speaker 4: So.
- 3:19Speaker 5: I thank you and please thank them for me as well. Um, yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 5: I love that about Adam. I love his, uh, they
- 3:29Speaker 5: hilariously asked me to write a little thing for time
- 3:32Speaker 5: magazine for like the hundred cool people right now. And
- 3:37Speaker 5: it was so funny because they asked me to like
- 3:40Speaker 5: sum up his, his thing. And they gave me like
- 3:46Speaker 5: 650 words or something, something so brief that, and then
- 3:50Speaker 5: they even cut paragraphs where I was like, come on,
- 3:53Speaker 5: you guys like this guy's career. is hilariously varied and
- 3:59Speaker 5: astonishing and also risible.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Like he has literally done everything.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm just going to look up risible real quick.
- 4:09Speaker 4: You'll love risible, R-I-S-I-B-L-E.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You love words.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You've taught me a lot of words. Risible, such as
- 4:18Speaker 2: to provoke laughter. I should know that word.
- 4:24Speaker 5: You know, I love about him that he has done
- 4:28Speaker 5: like Piranha 3D, just wonderful like B-movie schlott kind of stuff.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Also crazy, what was that HBO show where he had,
- 4:40Speaker 5: apparently it was in his contract, he had to show
- 4:42Speaker 5: his balls every episode.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Tell me you love me. He had a prosthetic penis.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It was the first thing I saw of him.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Oh my God. And he carried it off.
- 4:51Speaker 2: He sure did.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Literally.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Literally.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I guess you could have to say he pulled it off.
- 4:58Speaker 4: He really pulled it off. I've known him for a
- 5:00Speaker 4: long time.
- 5:01Speaker 5: We did play workshops together like 20 plus years ago.
- 5:07Speaker 5: And he was just this cool, funny guy. If you
- 5:10Speaker 5: get to step aside with Adam anywhere, he's just immediately
- 5:15Speaker 5: the cool kid or whatever he says to you. you're like, oh,
- 5:20Speaker 5: I just want to hang out with you, whatever this
- 5:21Speaker 5: event is. I mean, getting to work with him finally
- 5:24Speaker 5: on Parks and Rec, I always said, and to this day,
- 5:27Speaker 5: I still feel like he's my favorite leading man that
- 5:31Speaker 5: I've worked with because he's so authentic. He lets the
- 5:38Speaker 5: dorky parts of himself shine, even in Severance. Adam's pure,
- 5:45Speaker 5: sort of youthful, juvenile otter-like personality persona comes out, even
- 5:52Speaker 5: though he's like our.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Romantic leading man. And I agree.
- 5:56Speaker 5: It's so gorgeous to see him leading this massive artistic achievement.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm going to talk to him today about, obviously,
- 6:06Speaker 2: when he joined our show and what that felt like
- 6:11Speaker 2: to jump onto a train that was already moving. But
- 6:14Speaker 2: I realize I never talk to you Look, you and I,
- 6:18Speaker 2: I think, had such similar first day goals for the show,
- 6:22Speaker 2: and it was to make good work and have a
- 6:25Speaker 2: good time. And I feel like we, you know, you
- 6:28Speaker 2: more than anyone at times really were my partner in
- 6:32Speaker 2: that every day.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And I'm so grateful for it.
- 6:38Speaker 2: But when you remember him and Rob joining the show,
- 6:43Speaker 2: what do you remember feeling about that at the time?
- 6:45Speaker 4: There was an excitement for sure.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Adam was just coming off Party Down, which Megan had
- 6:50Speaker 5: worked on with him.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:52Speaker 4: And I was a really big fan of.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Your great wife, Megan Mullally, people should know. Your Tammy
- 6:58Speaker 2: wife in life and.
- 6:59Speaker 1: On the show.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Tammy too, plus.
- 7:03Speaker 5: I remember being excited at the talent, but also having
- 7:08Speaker 5: a little bit where we had maybe eight series regulars
- 7:12Speaker 5: at the time.
- 7:13Speaker 4: We were like, can we service two new hunks?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Do we have enough hunk room?
- 7:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Okay, so I'm asking my Zoomers to give me a
- 7:30Speaker 2: question to ask my guest. So I was wondering if
- 7:32Speaker 2: there's any question you think I should ask Adam today.
- 7:35Speaker 4: If I was just hanging with Adam, this is what
- 7:37Speaker 4: I would ask him is.
- 7:39Speaker 5: He's one of those guys who has a few dozen
- 7:43Speaker 5: stories that I've never heard, even though I've heard dozens
- 7:48Speaker 5: of just like luminaries that he's, you know, Scorsese put.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Him in the Leo movie.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Like he's, he's done so much and, and casually and
- 8:01Speaker 5: quietly been in so many great arenas.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I would just say, tell me, tell.
- 8:08Speaker 5: Me a story about somebody who you, would be starstruck
- 8:13Speaker 5: with that I haven't heard that you've worked with?
- 8:17Speaker 1: That's a great question, Nick. I love that question. And
- 8:20Speaker 1: you're right there.
- 8:21Speaker 2: There's a quiet experience that Adam doesn't brag about certainly,
- 8:28Speaker 2: but that like a lot, he's been on a lot
- 8:30Speaker 2: of different sets with very interesting to your point luminaries.
- 8:35Speaker 4: He's been, he's been everywhere.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Well, friend, I hope I can't wait to get you
- 8:39Speaker 1: in this seat.
- 8:40Speaker 2: And it's a hot seat, man. And when we get
- 8:43Speaker 2: when you get here, I do want to talk more
- 8:44Speaker 2: about facial hair, because I do think you've had to
- 8:47Speaker 2: switcheroo so much in your life. And your Ron's mustache
- 8:52Speaker 2: is I'm going to put it up there in the
- 8:55Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore of mustaches. And I miss you very much
- 8:58Speaker 2: and love you and so appreciate you doing this.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Well, I miss you and love you as well.
- 9:05Speaker 5: And Give my best to the gang and we'll be
- 9:08Speaker 5: in touch.
- 9:08Speaker 1: All right, buddy.
- 9:09Speaker 2: See you soon.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Cheers.
- 9:12Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by Uber Eats.

- 9:27Speaker 1: Get a block of cheese.
- 9:29Speaker 2: A cabana, that's a no. But a banana, that's a yes.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You know what I like to order from Uber Eats?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Batteries. Don't eat batteries.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But I often need batteries, and you can get batteries
- 9:42Speaker 2: from Uber Eats. Get almost, almost anything delivered with Uber Eats.

- 9:54Speaker 2: People haven't seen this feel you can't you can't hear
- 9:59Speaker 2: it but you can listeners this is a heavy peach
- 10:03Speaker 2: you could kill someone with that peach that's why i like.
- 10:05Speaker 3: It why is it is it a paperweight i.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Guess it probably is doesn't smell.
- 10:09Speaker 3: It's not you know what it doesn't smell like is
- 10:11Speaker 3: a peach.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Nope Um, listeners, Adam Scott's just come into the studio
- 10:17Speaker 2: and he's, um, checking out all of the fake food.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I knew you would love it.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Peach still looks like a butt no matter what. Yeah.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Peach's butt. I mean, that's why you give, send someone
- 10:28Speaker 1: a peach emoji. You're like, you're like, Hey, you're like,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I like your butt. These are the miniature.
- 10:34Speaker 4: I love it.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Uh, this is a, doesn't get enough play. This you
- 10:39Speaker 1: might like. This is a felt sandwich, but guess what?
- 10:41Speaker 1: You can take it apart.
- 10:43Speaker 3: You can also take a bite if you want. I
- 10:46Speaker 3: love a sandwich. You know what we don't talk about
- 10:49Speaker 3: enough is how great a good sandwich is.
- 10:52Speaker 1: What is your favorite sandwich? Like if you were to
- 10:55Speaker 1: build a sandwich.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Okay. First of all, it would need to be felt.
- 11:00Speaker 3: All of it. I just say if sandwich feels good
- 11:03Speaker 3: in your hands. Yeah. Two different cheese. I mean, this
- 11:07Speaker 3: is great.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 11:08Speaker 2: This might be too much information, but I have a
- 11:10Speaker 2: little bit of TMJ.
- 11:11Speaker 4: You do? Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So it's hard for me to open my mouth to
- 11:16Speaker 1: eat a sandwich.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I get nervous that I'm gonna get locked.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Sure. Like this? And your arms, too, locked like this.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and so a giant sandwich.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But check this out.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Bread. Yeah. Tomato.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Tomato.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Some onion.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Onion.
- 11:37Speaker 1: The heck, what are we, in California?
- 11:38Speaker 5: Avo.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Avo.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I don't like avo on a sandwich.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I don't either. Let's talk about it, because. I feel
- 11:43Speaker 1: like avo makes it soggy.
- 11:45Speaker 3: It also slides out.
- 11:47Speaker 1: That's what she said.
- 11:48Speaker 3: It doesn't cooperate with the rest of the sandwich.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Speaking of avo, Adam Scott is here and he's a
- 11:54Speaker 2: California kid. You're a California kid.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 1: You grew up in California.
- 12:00Speaker 3: You love giving me shit about being a California person.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Well, you grew up in Santa Cruz and tell people
- 12:06Speaker 1: how you used to drive.
- 12:07Speaker 3: If you're wearing, this is a universal thing.
- 12:09Speaker 1: It definitely is not.
- 12:10Speaker 3: If you're wearing flip-flops- Okay.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's already 80% of the world is already not
- 12:15Speaker 2: wearing it.
- 12:15Speaker 3: And you have to drive a car. It is unsafe
- 12:18Speaker 3: to keep the flip-flops on. You have to kick them
- 12:21Speaker 3: off and drive barefoot.
- 12:24Speaker 1: People in Santa Cruz drive barefoot.
- 12:26Speaker 3: It's ridiculous.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And Adam one time casually was like, you know when
- 12:30Speaker 2: you're like driving barefoot?
- 12:31Speaker 3: I said- Yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Is your house on fire?
- 12:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you forget your shoes?
- 12:36Speaker 1: With Santa Cruz, people drive barefoot.
- 12:38Speaker 3: If you keep your flip-flops on, they can easily get
- 12:41Speaker 3: like caught under the gas or the brake and then you're,
- 12:46Speaker 3: you know.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that has happened to me when I'm driving a
- 12:49Speaker 2: golf cart on vacation.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I don't wear flip-flops in life.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Oh, so you've never entered a car with flip-flops on?
- 12:57Speaker 1: I don't know if I ever have, because like, I.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Feel like- I'm gonna call bullshit on that right now. Well,
- 13:04Speaker 3: first of all, I.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Don't like flip flops that have the thing, you probably,
- 13:08Speaker 2: you know what?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Santa Cruz probably loves this. The thing between the big
- 13:12Speaker 1: toe and.
- 13:13Speaker 3: The first toe. How else does a flip flop function?
- 13:15Speaker 3: What kind of flip flops are you wearing?
- 13:17Speaker 2: I like a flip flop that, well, I guess it's
- 13:19Speaker 2: not a flip flop, that has the thing over the foot.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a sandal.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Okay, I like a sandal. I don't like a flip flop.
- 13:24Speaker 2: All right, all right.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Agree to disagree.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Santa Cruz, it feels like you guys walked around flip-flops
- 13:29Speaker 2: all day and all these people.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I remember I sent you a photo from Hawaii once.
- 13:35Speaker 3: That's why I thought of Hawaii, where I sent you
- 13:37Speaker 3: a photo of my bare foot on a gas pedal
- 13:40Speaker 3: and you were just like, nah.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Yeah, so gross. Also, truly like bare feet in general,
- 13:49Speaker 1: like how, I don't know.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Yeah, listen.
- 13:53Speaker 1: How do you feel about bare feet?
- 13:54Speaker 4: Okay.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I don't love bare feet. And I don't wear flip-flops. Like,
- 14:01Speaker 3: I feel like in my 20s, I was fine with, like,
- 14:05Speaker 3: jeans and flip-flops. Sure, sure. Which now I feel like
- 14:09Speaker 3: should be illegal.
- 14:10Speaker 4: I mean.
- 14:12Speaker 1: we spent a lot of, both of us spent a
- 14:13Speaker 1: lot of time in New York City. Like flip-flops in
- 14:15Speaker 1: New York City is absolutely disgusting.
- 14:17Speaker 3: It doesn't work. It's gross.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I mean, I guess Santa Cruz is nice, but how
- 14:20Speaker 1: can you run away from those vampires?
- 14:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 3: In flip-flops, you can't do it.
- 14:24Speaker 2: My first introduction to Santa Cruz was the movie Lost Boys,
- 14:27Speaker 2: where there were hot vampires.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Yeah. Jason Patrick in 1987. So how old were you
- 14:31Speaker 3: then when that movie came out? When they filmed it,
- 14:37Speaker 3: I was 13 and my next door neighbor, Joe Ferrara,
- 14:41Speaker 3: he owned the comic book store that they use in
- 14:43Speaker 3: the movie. So I got to go on the set
- 14:46Speaker 3: of Lost Boys as a 13 year old and I
- 14:49Speaker 3: met Joel Schumacher. And I stood outside Corey Haim and
- 14:54Speaker 3: Corey Feldman's trailers and watched them walk to their trailers.
- 14:59Speaker 3: And it was super exciting. Wow. But it was my
- 15:03Speaker 3: comic book store. It was a comic book store I
- 15:05Speaker 3: go to all the time. So I saw like how
- 15:08Speaker 3: they made it look different for the movie. It was cool.
- 15:11Speaker 1: What comics were you into when.
- 15:12Speaker 3: You were a kid? I was into like the Freak
- 15:16Speaker 3: Brothers and Fat Freddy's Cat. Do you know what these are?
- 15:20Speaker 5: Nope.
- 15:20Speaker 3: So do you think I just made those up? Fat
- 15:23Speaker 3: Freddy's cat. Fat Freddy's cat and the fabulous furry freak brothers.
- 15:27Speaker 3: They were like stoner, they were comic books about stoners. Oh, interesting.
- 15:32Speaker 1: So it wasn't more, it wasn't like the Marvel universe.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Was it?
- 15:35Speaker 3: I did that for, I dabbled in that, but I
- 15:38Speaker 3: was kind of more into the weird, like Zippy the pinhead.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And do you know who that is?
- 15:44Speaker 1: I think I remember that a little bit.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Like when I was older, there was, it was like
- 15:48Speaker 2: alternative comics.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't know why I was into it,
- 15:53Speaker 3: but I loved the Freak Brothers, and I wasn't smoking
- 15:57Speaker 3: pot when I was like a little kid or anything.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I just loved these comic books. You weren't? You weren't?
- 16:02Speaker 3: You heard it here first, guys.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Adam was not smoking pot.
- 16:04Speaker 3: I mean, Santa Cruz, I guess it's kind.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Of a toss-up.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Well, they just blow it into your car.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I'm sure. They blow it into your car and make
- 16:11Speaker 3: you take your shoes off.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Yeah, flip-flops are made out of weed, I'm sure, in
- 16:15Speaker 1: Santa Cruz.
- 16:15Speaker 3: That's right. You have to smoke your flip-flops.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I have now interviewed.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Rudd and Ham. Ham, I haven't gotten into the studio yet,
- 16:23Speaker 2: but he did.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Oh, he did Rudd's thing.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he zoomed in from a hot air balloon.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 16:30Speaker 1: But we talked a little bit about you guys.
- 16:32Speaker 2: All meeting and being like, you know, young bucks at
- 16:37Speaker 2: the same time, which is really wild.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Where, and I've talked about you.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Where did you see yourself in that trio? How would
- 16:49Speaker 2: you describe yourself?
- 16:50Speaker 1: Like which angel are you?
- 16:51Speaker 3: That's so funny. I always kind of feel like sort
- 16:55Speaker 3: of the little brother in that trio a little bit
- 16:58Speaker 3: because I'm quite a bit younger than both of them. Obviously,
- 17:01Speaker 3: that's like pretty good. No, I feel like.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Rudd I knew, Paul I knew first because we met,
- 17:12Speaker 3: I met him at my graduation from acting school. He
- 17:17Speaker 3: was a speaker at the graduation.
- 17:20Speaker 1: He was?
- 17:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Talking about acting?
- 17:22Speaker 3: No, he was giving out an award and I was
- 17:25Speaker 3: wearing like this polyester red suit. Just because, you know,
- 17:31Speaker 3: you're just kind of looking for attention wherever you can
- 17:34Speaker 3: get it, I guess, if you're graduating from theater school.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Oh, that's so, that hit me really hard.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:39Speaker 1: That's so true.
- 17:40Speaker 2: You're just like, I'm going to wear, I'm going to
- 17:41Speaker 2: dress like a cowgirl or something.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And you're like, I'm really, I'm really out there.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Everyone's going to just cheer for me just because I'm
- 17:49Speaker 3: wearing this thing. Um, uh, but yeah, we, we, I
- 17:54Speaker 3: remember we hung out afterwards and he was like, nice suit. Um,
- 17:58Speaker 3: it totally worked. Um, but yeah, so, so, so that
- 18:04Speaker 3: was like 1993. So I've known Paul and then we
- 18:07Speaker 3: did a play together, which I think he brought up, um,
- 18:11Speaker 3: in the fall of 1993. And I remember I got
- 18:14Speaker 3: my first acting job. while I was rehearsing that play,
- 18:18Speaker 3: and my beeper kept going off while we were rehearsing,
- 18:22Speaker 3: and the other guy in the scene kept turning it off.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Passive-aggressive?
- 18:26Speaker 3: And it was, yeah, turning off that acting job for me. Yeah,
- 18:32Speaker 3: he was like, no.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. He's like, we need you to be here presently.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Trying to stand in front of that acting job.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 18:37Speaker 3: That guest spot on Dead at 21, he didn't want anyone,
- 18:41Speaker 3: he wanted to get that.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And that guy was Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 18:44Speaker 3: That's right, that's right. And was never heard from again.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Nope.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Never worked again.
- 18:51Speaker 3: So I knew Paul then and then I met Ham
- 18:53Speaker 3: like a few years later.
- 18:54Speaker 2: But I mean, that's a very like outsider's young gun
- 19:00Speaker 2: kind of vibe that you guys were all acting to get,
- 19:03Speaker 2: like trying to audition.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:07Speaker 2: I mean, in the world you're very different, but I
- 19:10Speaker 2: imagine like there was... I don't know, you could have
- 19:13Speaker 2: done a lot of similar parts and probably auditioned for
- 19:15Speaker 2: similar things.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Yeah. And I remember once John and I were each
- 19:20Speaker 3: doing a different CSI. He was doing regular CSI. I
- 19:24Speaker 3: was doing CSI Miami and we were shooting like near
- 19:28Speaker 3: each other in Culver City or something and like met
- 19:32Speaker 3: up to go get a beer afterwards. And I remember
- 19:36Speaker 3: just kind of sitting there and just being like, How
- 19:39Speaker 3: much longer do you think we're going to need to
- 19:41Speaker 3: be like doing CSI? Because it was years and years
- 19:45Speaker 3: for both of us. I know.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I think it's super satisfying. to talk to you about
- 19:51Speaker 2: this stage of your career because Like a lot of
- 19:55Speaker 2: people I know, frankly, you had so much experience before
- 20:00Speaker 2: a lot of America knew you.
- 20:02Speaker 1: And I was talking to Nick about this earlier. Oh,
- 20:05Speaker 1: I talked to Nick Offerman.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Oh, you did.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I was surprised.
- 20:08Speaker 2: But he wanted to know when in that part of
- 20:14Speaker 2: your career before we all met, and I think he
- 20:17Speaker 2: was specifically talking about when you worked with Martin Scorsese,
- 20:20Speaker 2: but like what When were you really starstruck during that time?
- 20:25Speaker 3: I was always starstruck and never felt comfortable, partially because,
- 20:31Speaker 3: and maybe it's similar for you, like not growing up
- 20:36Speaker 3: in Los Angeles or in show business at all, like
- 20:38Speaker 3: having zero contact with it, being on a TV show
- 20:43Speaker 3: or being in a movie felt like going to the moon.
- 20:46Speaker 3: So once you're there, it's just so crazy that there's
- 20:50Speaker 3: a camera and there are lights and a famous person
- 20:53Speaker 3: sitting next to you that I sort of, it took
- 20:56Speaker 3: me a really long time. And I think probably hindered me.
- 21:00Speaker 3: It's probably one of the reasons that I, that it
- 21:03Speaker 3: took me a while as I just never was able
- 21:06Speaker 3: to relax because I was so freaked out by.
- 21:09Speaker 4: All of it.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Really? I think so.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Were you really anxious?
- 21:13Speaker 3: Really anxious, but really nervous.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Nervous.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And- How did it manifest? Did it manifest?
- 21:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it manifested in me not being, and I think
- 21:23Speaker 3: a part of it is, and it's something that I
- 21:26Speaker 3: saw you doing pretty immediately when we started working together
- 21:29Speaker 3: is you were like, you were good with all of
- 21:35Speaker 3: it and comfortable with all of it. And you were
- 21:39Speaker 3: able to share yourself with the camera, which is something
- 21:43Speaker 3: that took me a long time to even realize was
- 21:46Speaker 3: something you needed to do beyond figuring out what the
- 21:49Speaker 3: scene was or the characters or anything like that. You
- 21:52Speaker 3: just have to be able to, to open up and
- 21:56Speaker 3: share yourself with it. Does that make sense? It doesn't.
- 21:59Speaker 2: It's so interesting because it's kind of like what we
- 22:02Speaker 2: talked about, like the way in to like when you,
- 22:07Speaker 2: in any job, the way, the way you enter can
- 22:10Speaker 2: be kind of the thing that you identify with forever. Like, yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 2: I'm this kind of person. I'm this kind of performer.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 2: And I always found like when I was in Chicago
- 22:18Speaker 2: and it's funny, like Nick is a good example. Nick
- 22:21Speaker 2: was in like the like serious theater scene and there
- 22:24Speaker 2: were the improvisers and, you know, people that came the
- 22:27Speaker 2: comedy road.
- 22:28Speaker 1: There were the serious actors who studied acting.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:32Speaker 2: And I used to find that they were so trained
- 22:36Speaker 2: and so good. And I felt a little inferior in
- 22:39Speaker 2: terms of skill. But I also thought they took things
- 22:42Speaker 2: very seriously.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And because of it, they were missing that like play.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Totally. Like it was all their work was done when
- 22:50Speaker 3: they got to set.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I said this about you and Katherine Hahn, two very
- 22:55Speaker 2: skilled actors who studied.
- 22:59Speaker 1: First of all, you knew your lines, which is important.
- 23:02Speaker 3: You knew your lines.
- 23:04Speaker 4: I did.
- 23:04Speaker 1: But I mean, I just mean.
- 23:06Speaker 2: But I mean, you would both prepare in a way
- 23:08Speaker 2: that was, you know, part of the process of you working.
- 23:12Speaker 1: And the preparation was really impressive. And what I really
- 23:18Speaker 1: loved about working with you and.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Still do is you are one of those rare people
- 23:22Speaker 2: that you, maybe it was learned, maybe it didn't come
- 23:25Speaker 2: right away, but you do have a big sense of play.
- 23:28Speaker 2: You do not come in with some preconceived notion of
- 23:31Speaker 2: how things should go.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:34Speaker 2: You can straddle that like really good, deep acting and
- 23:39Speaker 2: really dumb, fun shit.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:43Speaker 3: But that's because, yeah, yeah, sorry.
- 23:46Speaker 1: No, why do you think that's because?
- 23:48Speaker 3: Well, I think that's because I was doing it with you.
- 23:50Speaker 1: But you were doing it before then too.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Not really.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I mean- Really party down.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:56Speaker 3: And- Party Down was more scripted. I mean, we didn't
- 24:02Speaker 3: have the like fun runs and stuff like we did
- 24:04Speaker 3: on Parks. I think Martin Starr would improvise more than anybody.
- 24:12Speaker 3: And Step Brothers, I was just like trying to keep
- 24:14Speaker 3: my head above water. I'd never really improvised before. So
- 24:17Speaker 3: I was like, it was one of the reasons I,
- 24:19Speaker 3: looking back, I was, I once started really doing Parks
- 24:24Speaker 3: and It's like, this is the way to do it.
- 24:26Speaker 3: This is like so fun. And, um, and it's no
- 24:32Speaker 3: less satisfying than some serious thing. It's, it's all in there.
- 24:36Speaker 3: The characters are bone deep. It's so funny. Everyone cares
- 24:42Speaker 3: about each other and it's super fun. Um, so it
- 24:46Speaker 3: made me kind of think like all those years I
- 24:48Speaker 3: was wasting trying to like get three lines on NYPD blue.
- 24:52Speaker 3: I could have been trying to do something at improv
- 24:56Speaker 3: olympic or it's just it's just you look back and
- 24:59Speaker 3: you never.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Know i can remember all the those years that we
- 25:03Speaker 2: all did those movies big and small parts in them
- 25:05Speaker 2: where improv was so important to make those movies come
- 25:09Speaker 2: alive but i remember there was like a tipping point
- 25:12Speaker 2: for me one time in a movie that i did
- 25:15Speaker 2: where like there was just like 10 people like shouting
- 25:19Speaker 2: jokes at me right.
- 25:20Speaker 1: About like do this and i remember going like I
- 25:23Speaker 1: don't even know what my character's name is. I don't
- 25:25Speaker 1: even know what my character is.
- 25:27Speaker 3: It's so interesting you say that because it's around that
- 25:32Speaker 3: time from 2005 through 2013, that was the overwhelming culture
- 25:34Speaker 3: on Netflix. comedy sets was just a bunch of people
- 25:42Speaker 3: screaming jokes at you and you just being like yeah okay.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Who which one of us says and they're like either
- 25:48Speaker 2: one yeah who cares cool yeah i've done a good
- 25:51Speaker 2: job with my character if either one of us can
- 25:53Speaker 2: say this joke no.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I know and i feel i it's it's and you like.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Your career is so interesting you have done so many
- 26:03Speaker 2: different things i think it's what is uh i know
- 26:06Speaker 2: for me like so exciting about this moment.
- 26:09Speaker 1: For you is that it's just, there's just really nothing
- 26:16Speaker 1: you can't do, Adam.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Stop that.
- 26:18Speaker 1: It's ridiculous.
- 26:19Speaker 3: It's so true, dude.
- 26:20Speaker 1: It's so ridiculous. But I think people like to know
- 26:24Speaker 1: these things.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Was there ever a part you auditioned for that you
- 26:26Speaker 2: got close on that you didn't get?
- 26:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Six Feet Under.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:33Speaker 3: That was the one that I didn't get.
- 26:35Speaker 1: And it's good that- It was for Michael C. Hall's role?
- 26:37Speaker 3: Michael C. Hall's role. And it's good that, I didn't
- 26:40Speaker 3: get it because it wouldn't be nearly as good if
- 26:45Speaker 3: I had done it because he was perfect and incredible.
- 26:49Speaker 3: He's incredible. And I wasn't ready.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But you mean like it was between you and two
- 26:54Speaker 1: other guys?
- 26:55Speaker 3: He and I tested for it. And I believe.
- 26:58Speaker 4: That hurts.
- 26:59Speaker 3: It was the one where I was like, I might
- 27:03Speaker 3: stop doing this. I think that it's time for me
- 27:05Speaker 3: to like read the tea leaves and walk away.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I don't think people understand that enough when you lose
- 27:13Speaker 2: a part and it's so close and then the show
- 27:15Speaker 2: is this hit and you watch it.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Oh, it's painful.
- 27:17Speaker 2: It really is like someone fucking your girlfriend in.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Front of you.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Yeah. 100%. And you're just.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Like, oh my God, this show is so good. And
- 27:26Speaker 1: he's so good in it.
- 27:28Speaker 3: And that show was everything. Like it just kind of
- 27:32Speaker 3: like eclipsed all other shows. It was the show. I
- 27:35Speaker 3: went and did a couple episodes as Michael's boyfriend.
- 27:38Speaker 1: That's right.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Like in season two.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And Michael was like, you want to see the trailer
- 27:43Speaker 1: you could have had?
- 27:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Everything he showed me is his bank account.
- 27:48Speaker 3: I love that show. No, he was lovely, of course,
- 27:52Speaker 3: and it was fun and stuff. But yeah, that was
- 27:54Speaker 3: a blow. That was hard. But, you know, it's also
- 28:00Speaker 3: important that you have those experiences.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Are you good in auditions, do you think?
- 28:06Speaker 3: No, no, no, no. Me neither. Terrible. Me too. I
- 28:08Speaker 3: hated it so much. I was so nervous.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Me too.
- 28:11Speaker 1: You were nervous.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Yeah. What about you?
- 28:14Speaker 2: Well, I was nervous too, but the way I masked
- 28:16Speaker 2: my nervousness, which is not a great quality, is I
- 28:19Speaker 2: would get kind of like, I would seem kind of ambivalent.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Like I would get kind of, you know when you
- 28:24Speaker 1: get nervous, you get sleepy?
- 28:25Speaker 3: Yep.
- 28:27Speaker 2: So I would be very nervous and just like stomach
- 28:30Speaker 2: in knots and really psyching myself out of like, just
- 28:35Speaker 2: go in there, just do what you can do.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 1: But that would tip over into- I don't care. I
- 28:41Speaker 1: don't care.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:42Speaker 1: And what was your audition like for Park? Did you
- 28:45Speaker 1: audition for Parks and Rec?
- 28:46Speaker 4: No.
- 28:46Speaker 3: No, I was lucky.
- 28:47Speaker 1: They just gave it to you.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Yeah. Because Mike, I remember the day that my phone
- 28:57Speaker 3: had you and Mike's names on the voicemail thing. And
- 29:02Speaker 3: I was like, whoa, is this, is it finally like
- 29:05Speaker 3: happening to me? Because I, and I showed someone like, Look,
- 29:09Speaker 3: Mike Schur, Amy Poehler. And then there was someone else
- 29:11Speaker 3: who was calling me. It was like suddenly for whatever reason,
- 29:15Speaker 3: people were, there were incoming calls asking me to do stuff.
- 29:19Speaker 3: And then that had never happened before. I don't remember
- 29:23Speaker 3: why that started happening on one particular day, but you
- 29:27Speaker 3: left me a voicemail and that was a huge deal.
- 29:30Speaker 3: I'm sure I still have it. Really? Yeah, I'm sure
- 29:32Speaker 3: I do.
- 29:33Speaker 1: We should put like a techno beat to it.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Totally. put it out no that's when I first heard
- 29:37Speaker 3: it I was like this would make a great song
- 29:40Speaker 3: this would be a hit this is catchy this is
- 29:42Speaker 3: How does this voicemail catch you to me? So wait, just, yes. Can,
- 29:47Speaker 3: I just want to interject so I don't forget because
- 29:49Speaker 3: that's what I do. I always forget shit that I
- 29:52Speaker 3: was going to say. Every single day, someone tells me
- 29:56Speaker 3: Parks got them through the pandemic. And I heard you
- 29:59Speaker 3: mention it on a previous episode.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Every single day, people say I watched it during COVID.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I watch it with my kid. My kid's going through
- 30:07Speaker 2: a hard time. I like to watch it at night
- 30:09Speaker 2: because I get, I have a lot of anxiety. Like,
- 30:14Speaker 2: I cannot believe the way that that show continues to be.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Medicine for people.
- 30:20Speaker 3: It's so nice.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Isn't that nice? And Ben and Leslie.
- 30:23Speaker 3: I know. I know. Do you remember we were texting
- 30:28Speaker 3: just a couple months ago and just kind of commented
- 30:31Speaker 3: on how nice they are?
- 30:33Speaker 1: They're so nice. They're so much nicer than us.
- 30:36Speaker 3: So much nicer.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And they're so nice to each other.
- 30:39Speaker 5: I know.
- 30:39Speaker 3: I know.
- 30:40Speaker 1: And every woman deserves a Ben.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Every woman deserves a partner like Ben who roots for
- 30:46Speaker 2: you and like looks at you and is just like,
- 30:50Speaker 2: that's my gal. Like everyone deserves that kind of relationship.
- 30:54Speaker 3: But also, Leslie, from the word go. loved Ben. Oh, beyond. Like,
- 31:02Speaker 3: now looking back, it's like they were just in love
- 31:05Speaker 3: with each other.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I know.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Immediately.
- 31:07Speaker 1: And their arc was such so juicy.
- 31:09Speaker 4: I know.
- 31:09Speaker 2: The writers, Mike and the writers, because they meet and
- 31:12Speaker 2: they're just like, well, what's your deal?
- 31:14Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. It was like... Hot. And then
- 31:18Speaker 3: they like each other, but then they can't.
- 31:20Speaker 1: They can't be together.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that was great. They can't be together, which is like, really?
- 31:23Speaker 1: I mean, they probably could have been together.
- 31:25Speaker 3: I know, it didn't matter, but.
- 31:27Speaker 1: And then they had to break up.
- 31:28Speaker 3: And Mike was like, this is totally fake and whatever,
- 31:30Speaker 3: but we just need to have Rob care about you
- 31:33Speaker 3: two being together. And it worked. And it was like,
- 31:36Speaker 3: made it even hotter.
- 31:37Speaker 2: And then Ben.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Was like, I want you. Ben kept putting Leslie's, you
- 31:42Speaker 1: know what it is?
- 31:43Speaker 2: They kept putting each other's needs over their own. They
- 31:47Speaker 2: cared about what the other one needed and they respected
- 31:50Speaker 2: each other. Like they really liked what the other one did.
- 31:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 2: And it was the best thing about that relationship is how,
- 31:57Speaker 2: you know, with the exception of Anne, who is.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Of course.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Leslie's number one.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Of course. I've accepted that. Yeah.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Is the way that they just rooted for each other.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Yes.
- 32:11Speaker 1: They really rooted for each other.
- 32:12Speaker 3: I haven't seen a ton of... It makes me sad
- 32:16Speaker 3: to watch the show because I miss it. I've heard
- 32:17Speaker 3: you say that. Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Why does it make you sad?
- 32:20Speaker 3: Because I'm... I miss it. I, like you were saying,
- 32:23Speaker 3: like we really appreciated being there every day and it
- 32:27Speaker 3: was so fun. And also just sort of walking in
- 32:31Speaker 3: that building and then suddenly you're there and the hallways
- 32:34Speaker 3: and the, it was so fun and the people just
- 32:38Speaker 3: loved everybody. But I guess maybe it just, that's a
- 32:42Speaker 3: good question. Why does it actually make me sad?
- 32:43Speaker 2: I think I know is because you're stuck in that
- 32:46Speaker 2: fucking weird office.
- 32:47Speaker 3: The white hallways. And you're running in a white hallway.
- 32:49Speaker 3: With the green carpet.
- 32:50Speaker 1: I told Adam, I was like, too much running.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Too much running, yeah. I know. I was so tired.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I mean, just, and there's, you don't even know where
- 32:58Speaker 1: you're going. I mean, every hallway looks the same.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I know, I know. Get lost. Get lost every day.
- 33:04Speaker 3: That's why. It's exhausting and confusing. Yes. I know. Pawnee hallways.
- 33:10Speaker 1: People are dying in your new workplace. Like, they're getting killed.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Pawnee, everyone's nice. There's a graphic painting of a massacre
- 33:20Speaker 3: on the wall, but it's covered up.
- 33:22Speaker 1: That's true.
- 33:22Speaker 3: That's okay.
- 33:23Speaker 1: It was a terrible massacre.
- 33:25Speaker 3: But something I saw recently is our very first scene
- 33:28Speaker 3: in that bar when.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Love that scene.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Me too.
- 33:32Speaker 1: So well-written, that scene.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Yes.
- 33:33Speaker 3: And we're having a beer and I say, Ben says, yeah,
- 33:39Speaker 3: but you want to, you're going to run for, and
- 33:41Speaker 3: like immediately just knows- that Leslie has the, these ambitions.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:46Speaker 3: That it seemed that you'd never even said out loud before,
- 33:50Speaker 3: but is 100% what you planned on doing. It was
- 33:54Speaker 3: just such a great little. Yes.
- 33:55Speaker 1: What they saw, they saw in each other, the dream
- 33:59Speaker 1: for the other.
- 34:00Speaker 3: That's right.
- 34:01Speaker 1: They just, they kept like, they assumed the best and
- 34:04Speaker 1: they saw the potential in each other basically. That's right.
- 34:09Speaker 3: I know.
- 34:09Speaker 1: It was so fun to play that.
- 34:11Speaker 2: And I was saying, too, that I for this interview,
- 34:13Speaker 2: I rewatched your first scene, which it's so good because
- 34:18Speaker 2: Nick and I are on the side. You know, Ron
- 34:20Speaker 2: and I never sat on this. We never sat down
- 34:23Speaker 2: next to each other.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Usually you were at loggerheads.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Yeah, we were across from each other.
- 34:27Speaker 2: And so it's like you've got the kind of like
- 34:30Speaker 2: Pawnee side.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:32Speaker 1: And then you and Rob come in with suits.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:35Speaker 1: And it's like, who are these whippersnappers?
- 34:38Speaker 2: And I can remember that day because it was our
- 34:42Speaker 2: first day of work. I think that was the first
- 34:43Speaker 2: scene that we did. And it played really well because
- 34:46Speaker 2: it was like, who is this new person?
- 34:48Speaker 3: Who are these guys? Yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 2: What was it like to join a show that was
- 34:59Speaker 2: in motion that you had watched already on TV?
- 35:02Speaker 3: It was so weird. but immediately fun. Like even the
- 35:07Speaker 3: first table read, I remember I was like, I got,
- 35:10Speaker 3: I walked in the room like one minute after I
- 35:14Speaker 3: was supposed to be there. So I was already like thrown,
- 35:17Speaker 3: like I'm fucking late to my first, Jesus Christ. And,
- 35:21Speaker 3: but it was immediately so warm and welcoming and super
- 35:25Speaker 3: fun people. Everybody's laughing at the incredible jokes in the script.
- 35:31Speaker 3: But then when we started shooting, um, I mean, you know,
- 35:36Speaker 3: it was a welcoming place that immediately kind of fostered,
- 35:41Speaker 3: encouraged your best, but also to take swings and shots
- 35:50Speaker 3: without any sort of fear of doing the wrong thing.
- 35:55Speaker 3: That was just never really there.
- 35:57Speaker 2: And then that short season was kind of short when
- 35:59Speaker 2: we started because I was preggers.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 36:03Speaker 2: And it's not always easy like getting chemistry going with
- 36:07Speaker 2: a gal who's like hiding her stomach behind a plant.
- 36:10Speaker 3: It was so easy.
- 36:11Speaker 1: But it was.
- 36:12Speaker 4: It was so easy.
- 36:12Speaker 1: I remember just being like, oh, bless your heart, Adam.
- 36:15Speaker 2: The other thing I just like that I feel like
- 36:18Speaker 2: I am proud of during that is the way in which,
- 36:22Speaker 2: and I said it before, but I feel like the
- 36:24Speaker 2: way in which in real time, it's a job that
- 36:28Speaker 2: I felt the most present in.
- 36:30Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 36:31Speaker 2: SNL felt like a speeding train, an emergency room. And
- 36:36Speaker 2: I learned really fast and hard lessons really fast. And
- 36:40Speaker 2: for everyone on parks, I felt like we were all
- 36:44Speaker 2: kind of in this tender bubble because we often thought
- 36:48Speaker 2: we were going to get canceled.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Where we just kind of knew what we had.
- 36:53Speaker 3: I don't know. I think that you guys did a
- 36:55Speaker 3: really good job because all this stuff about us almost
- 36:57Speaker 3: getting canceled. think we all kind of sensed something but
- 37:01Speaker 3: i don't think any of us except you and i
- 37:03Speaker 3: think you and mike protected us from a lot of
- 37:05Speaker 3: that which is great producing and really taking care of
- 37:09Speaker 3: all of us um i don't think we were ever
- 37:14Speaker 3: quite i've kind of heard all of it since um
- 37:17Speaker 3: but it was pretty tenuous there at the end of
- 37:20Speaker 3: the seasons.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Yeah yeah it's scary you're a great producer what do
- 37:24Speaker 2: you like about producing speaking of producing.
- 37:26Speaker 3: That's nice of you to say Um, I learned a
- 37:30Speaker 3: lot watching you work and working with you both as
- 37:34Speaker 3: a producer, but also as the lead actor, like you
- 37:37Speaker 3: really kind of set the template for me truly, um,
- 37:44Speaker 3: how everyone should and deserves to be treated cast and
- 37:48Speaker 3: crew and all of that. I always kind of directing
- 37:52Speaker 3: specifically as like, Because you're looking at a monitor all day.
- 37:55Speaker 3: It's like getting to watch television, which is like one
- 37:58Speaker 3: of my favorite things to do, except you get to
- 37:59Speaker 3: go in and try to make it better. And producing
- 38:02Speaker 3: is somewhat similar in that you're spending all of your
- 38:05Speaker 3: time just trying to nitpick and find all of the
- 38:08Speaker 3: things that don't work and find solutions for all of them.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Or making sure everybody's happy and feeling good about what
- 38:17Speaker 3: they're doing. That's another important component that I really learned
- 38:20Speaker 3: from you and Mike, too, is It's so important that
- 38:23Speaker 3: everybody is feeling like they're a part of it, like
- 38:27Speaker 3: a useful cog in the machine, and that it's a
- 38:30Speaker 3: satisfying job for them.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Now, do you guys have... For Severance, which, by the way, congratulations.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 38:37Speaker 1: And get that Emmy speech ready, baby. Get that Emmy.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Speech ready, honey. God, please. But....
- 38:46Speaker 1: Get it ready.
- 38:48Speaker 3: But.
- 38:50Speaker 3: When you.
- 38:52Speaker 2: When you shoot that show, is it, I just feel
- 38:54Speaker 2: like it's a really, I mean, it's so beautifully shot.
- 38:59Speaker 1: You have such great set design.
- 39:02Speaker 2: You have tons of, like, it just seems like it's
- 39:05Speaker 2: a long, how many days take, is one episode take?
- 39:09Speaker 3: Well, it depends.
- 39:10Speaker 1: It's long, right?
- 39:11Speaker 3: It's long. The season two, I think it was 186 days. Wow.
- 39:17Speaker 3: For the season, which is a long time, you know?
- 39:21Speaker 3: I mean, I think like one episode took like six
- 39:23Speaker 3: weeks and then I think it's kind of average out
- 39:26Speaker 3: because we shoot them like three at a time, all
- 39:29Speaker 3: mixed up together.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you cross board is the term you do that?
- 39:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 39:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Season one, we shot the entire thing at once.
- 39:36Speaker 3: So like in month nine, we were still shooting scenes
- 39:40Speaker 3: from the first episode. But the thing that that did-
- 39:44Speaker 3: the accidental thing that that did is, you know, the
- 39:46Speaker 3: first few episodes of any show are a little shaky
- 39:49Speaker 3: and everyone's finding their tone a little bit or characters
- 39:52Speaker 3: or whatever. It spread that out over the entire season.
- 39:56Speaker 3: So it kind of felt more or less fully realized,
- 40:01Speaker 3: you know, in a way fully realized from the start,
- 40:03Speaker 3: but the shaky scenes are kind of distributed over the.
- 40:08Speaker 2: You have to do so much switcheroo in that show.
- 40:12Speaker 2: I mean, like you have to act against yourself. You
- 40:14Speaker 2: have to just figure out versions of yourself truly that
- 40:17Speaker 2: change mid scene, let alone mid sentence. Do you have
- 40:21Speaker 2: a script supervisor or a graph or someone that keeps that?
- 40:25Speaker 1: How do you keep track of that?
- 40:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good question. In season one, I remember
- 40:31Speaker 3: I had heard that Michael Keaton had this big, like
- 40:34Speaker 3: these big poster boards for multiplicity where he kept track
- 40:38Speaker 3: of all of his characters. And I got large like
- 40:43Speaker 3: construction paper. I remember I was staying in Aziz's apartment
- 40:46Speaker 3: in season one. And so I was like, I remember
- 40:49Speaker 3: putting it out on the floor and getting like a
- 40:51Speaker 3: marker and drawing a line and like, trying to like
- 40:56Speaker 3: mark down like the scenes and the episodes. And eventually
- 40:59Speaker 3: it was like, I don't know what I'm doing. And
- 41:01Speaker 3: I just stopped doing that. I just gave up. But
- 41:06Speaker 3: I think it's, you just sort of map it out
- 41:09Speaker 3: and then just like a math problem is try to
- 41:12Speaker 3: kind of lock in what's going on. Particularly if you're
- 41:16Speaker 3: shooting it all at once, you have to sort of
- 41:18Speaker 3: make some decisions and, and we would go back and
- 41:22Speaker 3: forth between characters sometimes in the, In one, like in
- 41:25Speaker 3: the morning we would do innie stuff and in the
- 41:27Speaker 3: afternoon do outie stuff.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Ah, interesting.
- 41:30Speaker 3: Yeah. And so.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Oh, that's interesting.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:32Speaker 1: So you'd like innie before lunch.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Outie after lunch. Yeah, that's right. Which is good because
- 41:37Speaker 3: you're slowed down after lunch.
- 41:38Speaker 1: And you want to let it outie.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. You got to get it outie.
- 41:40Speaker 1: You got to get it outie.
- 41:40Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. You let it innie and you got to
- 41:43Speaker 3: get it outie.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I mean, it's such an indication of how well that
- 41:49Speaker 2: show trapped us because in this last season, it's just
- 41:55Speaker 2: so incredible.
- 41:55Speaker 1: The finale was so incredible.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 41:59Speaker 3: What? Your wife.
- 42:02Speaker 4: Right.
- 42:03Speaker 1: She went pretty hard to get back to you.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Dude.
- 42:08Speaker 3: I know. Were you pissed? Yeah, dude. Yeah, yeah.
- 42:14Speaker 1: And Britt is incredible. I got to do a movie
- 42:16Speaker 1: with Britt.
- 42:17Speaker 4: She's awesome.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 42:18Speaker 4: You guys did.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Yeah, we did this movie, Sisters, and she was so
- 42:20Speaker 1: fun in it and so funny. She's great in the show.
- 42:23Speaker 3: So good. Well, what other choice was any mark going
- 42:28Speaker 3: to make?
- 42:28Speaker 1: Oh, I don't know. The choice whether you go with
- 42:30Speaker 1: your wife.
- 42:31Speaker 3: So walk out the door and like end your life? Yes,
- 42:34Speaker 3: you go to the door. That's the choice you would make.
- 42:37Speaker 1: What do you mean end your life?
- 42:39Speaker 3: He walks out that door. He doesn't know if he's
- 42:41Speaker 3: ever coming back. He walks out the door. He becomes
- 42:44Speaker 3: his Audi. He doesn't know if that Audi is ever
- 42:47Speaker 3: going to walk back in that building.
- 42:49Speaker 1: But that building is not great.
- 42:52Speaker 3: No, but it's better than not existing. But is it? Yeah,
- 42:55Speaker 3: I don't know. That's a good question. I don't know.
- 42:57Speaker 1: It was such a good ending. It was like standing up,
- 43:00Speaker 1: shouting at the TV ending. It was so good. And
- 43:03Speaker 1: you played it so well.
- 43:04Speaker 2: And it was so exciting to watch that ending.
- 43:07Speaker 1: It was so satisfying.
- 43:08Speaker 3: You were nice. You texted me like right after. And
- 43:12Speaker 3: you text pretty promptly after things. And it always means
- 43:15Speaker 3: the most when you text me. It really does.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I mean, it means the most that I get to
- 43:19Speaker 2: have friends that, I mean, for people listening, can you
- 43:21Speaker 2: imagine your favorite TV?
- 43:23Speaker 1: It's the best feeling in the world.
- 43:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Your favorite TV show. And then you get to text
- 43:27Speaker 1: the person on it immediately and be like, what the fuck?
- 43:30Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And, you know, and it's not.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Like you get any spoilers, but you just get to like,
- 43:35Speaker 2: be like, you get to process.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Like I think growing up, if I ever, you know,
- 43:39Speaker 1: if I'd ever been able to, I don't know. Text
- 43:42Speaker 1: Molly Ringwald.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 43:44Speaker 1: And be like.
- 43:46Speaker 3: Dude.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Why didn't you pick Ducky?
- 43:48Speaker 3: Ducky, man.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Ducky was the dude.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Or like, I remember I wrote viewer mail to David
- 43:54Speaker 3: Letterman and just never, you know, they just kind of
- 43:59Speaker 3: went off and disintegrated in the mail.
- 44:02Speaker 1: And you're like, Dave. Yeah, Dave.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Hey. I remember I came up with this whole thing
- 44:06Speaker 3: that I thought they would use to create a bit
- 44:08Speaker 3: around that I thought would be. So lame.
- 44:12Speaker 2: People should know this about you. You have great hair
- 44:14Speaker 2: and you do not have a system.
- 44:15Speaker 1: That is your hair.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Do you mean like a toupee?
- 44:19Speaker 1: I don't know. You don't have a system. Whatever that is.
- 44:22Speaker 1: And there's nothing wrong with having it.
- 44:24Speaker 3: No, look, there's nothing wrong with a system.
- 44:26Speaker 1: There's nothing wrong with a hair system. Men and women.
- 44:29Speaker 2: I'm just saying that Adam has great hair and you,
- 44:33Speaker 2: do you think it's because you're Scottish?
- 44:35Speaker 3: Aren't you Scottish and I'm Scottish. I'm Sicilian. Oh, okay.
- 44:40Speaker 1: That maybe it's that.
- 44:41Speaker 3: I don't know. But also I started taking Propecia when
- 44:45Speaker 3: I was like 30 years old.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Really?
- 44:47Speaker 3: Yeah. It started, it started coming out, um, pretty like
- 44:52Speaker 3: when I was like 30 ish. Um, Yeah. I mean,
- 44:56Speaker 3: everyone on Parks, remember all the guys had great hair? Yes.
- 44:59Speaker 1: And all the men and Catherine Hahn had great hair.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Catherine Hahn has great hair.
- 45:02Speaker 2: And then I don't think Rashida would mind or Aubrey
- 45:05Speaker 2: would mind that we all felt like we had.
- 45:08Speaker 3: Why? Our hair was.
- 45:11Speaker 1: It's just thin.
- 45:13Speaker 4: Oh.
- 45:13Speaker 2: But all the men would just have these like giant
- 45:17Speaker 2: heads of hair.
- 45:18Speaker 3: That's right. Like, and it just.
- 45:21Speaker 1: I mean, Nick would grow a beard in a day.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Yeah, that mustache is like, what is it, 45 minutes
- 45:28Speaker 3: he can grow that?
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he can grow it in 45 minutes if he
- 45:30Speaker 2: just goes.
- 45:31Speaker 3: Yeah, he has to push really hard.
- 45:34Speaker 2: But one more severance question, which is what is happening
- 45:40Speaker 2: on it? What is it and what happened?
- 45:45Speaker 3: Right, what's going on?
- 45:46Speaker 1: And what's going on?
- 45:47Speaker 3: What happened and what is it?
- 45:50Speaker 1: But you do host a podcast.
- 45:52Speaker 3: How has that been? Yeah, Ben and I host it.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Yeah, how has it been doing that?
- 45:55Speaker 4: Great.
- 45:55Speaker 1: What's it like to talk about the show that you're.
- 45:58Speaker 3: It's actually been... We originally... It was actually Naomi's idea.
- 46:03Speaker 3: She was like, you guys... Because it had been three
- 46:06Speaker 3: years since season one, we were just like... We were
- 46:09Speaker 3: just worried about everyone that watched the first season coming back.
- 46:12Speaker 3: So we were just trying to think of ways to...
- 46:14Speaker 3: And Naomi thought, you guys should do this. And it
- 46:19Speaker 3: actually was... It's so fun to just go back and
- 46:22Speaker 3: really be able to watch the episodes as finished things
- 46:27Speaker 3: and talk over it with the actors or, you know,
- 46:30Speaker 3: crew members or whomever. And kind of talk about it
- 46:35Speaker 3: as audience members and kind of dipping into what we remember,
- 46:40Speaker 3: what we intended and, you know, all that stuff.
- 46:43Speaker 4: Cool.
- 46:43Speaker 1: And do you remember the YouTube podcast it used to
- 46:46Speaker 1: do with Aquaman?
- 46:46Speaker 3: Yes. What if I didn't remember it?
- 46:49Speaker 1: Do you remember? That's such a bad question. Do you remember?
- 46:52Speaker 3: No, no, no. It's not because it's something that you
- 46:54Speaker 3: could forget.
- 46:55Speaker 2: People also don't know that you did a podcast about
- 46:59Speaker 2: you too.
- 47:00Speaker 1: And it was called?
- 47:01Speaker 3: You talking you too to me.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Why did you do a podcast about you too?
- 47:07Speaker 3: We did it because we found out that we were
- 47:11Speaker 3: both U2 fans and there was something funny about doing it,
- 47:15Speaker 3: doing it because U2 is so huge. There was something
- 47:19Speaker 3: funny about doing, it's almost like doing a podcast about
- 47:23Speaker 3: like Sizzler or something. I love U2, but they're big.
- 47:28Speaker 3: And so, and I don't know, it's hard to pinpoint
- 47:30Speaker 3: exactly why it's funny to do the thing. And that
- 47:34Speaker 3: wasn't the right analogy, but, um, We both found out
- 47:39Speaker 3: that Kulop, Scott's wife, and Naomi, my wife, were sick
- 47:42Speaker 3: of hearing about U2 and didn't want to talk about
- 47:45Speaker 3: it anymore. And so we, I think maybe Seth Meyers
- 47:49Speaker 3: said something on this show about being a middle-aged man
- 47:54Speaker 3: if you want to have middle-aged male friendships you need
- 47:56Speaker 3: to do a podcast together.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Oh my god yes yeah i mean it is it
- 48:02Speaker 2: it's one of the things i love about you is
- 48:04Speaker 2: you have a very back of the classroom style of
- 48:07Speaker 2: comedy like you are a side like you're the like
- 48:11Speaker 2: out of your mouth talker you're a shit talker um
- 48:15Speaker 2: not in a bad way but like you know okay
- 48:16Speaker 2: you are you are You can be like a love
- 48:21Speaker 2: tap from Adam is like a quick, you know, to me,
- 48:25Speaker 2: that's what intimacy is, is when you can like.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Shit talk your friends.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:32Speaker 2: And you like to mumble out of the side of
- 48:34Speaker 2: your mouth in the back of the class.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Sure, sure.
- 48:37Speaker 2: But what comes, what's great about that is along with
- 48:40Speaker 2: that comes like you like deep dives into.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Dumb stuff.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Dumb stuff.
- 48:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Like getting dumb stuff and like elevating it by the
- 48:51Speaker 2: way you talk about it.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Have you always been like that?
- 48:54Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Because you were a big TV and movie fangirl.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Like you just were kind of a nerd in that
- 48:59Speaker 2: way when you talked about comic books.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. There's nothing nerdier than a fucking comic book.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Particularly Fat Freddy's Cat. Yeah, I think that, and I
- 49:11Speaker 3: think doing it on a podcast is extra good because
- 49:13Speaker 3: you can edit it and make it shorter.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Now that you're my, we're the same age? Are you
- 49:18Speaker 1: like a year younger than me?
- 49:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we're the same age.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Do you have like hobbies now that you're getting into? Like,
- 49:24Speaker 2: you know how we are, like that happens to us, like.
- 49:26Speaker 3: Where we're like, I want to start gardening.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Gardening stuff, like do you do that?
- 49:33Speaker 3: No, I've never, I have like, In the garage is
- 49:37Speaker 3: like a bicycle and a, what did I have? I
- 49:41Speaker 3: had a telescope that I got, like a really nice
- 49:45Speaker 3: telescope and never once used it. A bicycle that I
- 49:51Speaker 3: rode once. I don't, I've been looking for, I don't,
- 49:57Speaker 3: I like working and I like, do you have a thing?
- 50:01Speaker 1: No, it's funny you say that about a telescope. That
- 50:03Speaker 1: is such a... like, you know what? I'm going to
- 50:06Speaker 1: get a nice telescope.
- 50:07Speaker 3: Get a fucking telescope.
- 50:08Speaker 1: I deserve it.
- 50:09Speaker 3: Yeah. I'm going to look at the stars.
- 50:11Speaker 1: I mean, who are we?
- 50:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:13Speaker 1: On this tiny marble.
- 50:14Speaker 3: There's a moon. It's up there every night. I've never
- 50:16Speaker 3: taken a good look at it. And then I just
- 50:20Speaker 3: never looked at it.
- 50:21Speaker 1: It's cut to a dusty place to hang your clothes.
- 50:24Speaker 3: I don't care about the moon that much.
- 50:28Speaker 2: I guess what I'm asking underneath that question is like,
- 50:30Speaker 2: you've been working really hard for a long time.
- 50:32Speaker 1: What's your relationship? to work and to hard work?
- 50:35Speaker 3: And do you? That's a good question. I feel like
- 50:39Speaker 3: it's all mixed up and somewhat dysfunctional. You know what
- 50:42Speaker 3: I was thinking about actually, and it's sort of on
- 50:45Speaker 3: the same line of thinking is that you mentioned SNL earlier.
- 50:49Speaker 3: And something that I realized recently was when I really
- 50:55Speaker 3: kind of met you and got to know you, SNL
- 50:57Speaker 3: was only like, what, two years ago, a year and
- 51:01Speaker 3: a half before Parks? Yeah. Like it was a fresh
- 51:06Speaker 3: thing and what an intense experience and what a giant
- 51:10Speaker 3: change work-wise from that environment and that the pressure of
- 51:14Speaker 3: that to the pressure of, of parks, which was an
- 51:19Speaker 3: enormous amount of pressure, but entirely different. It must've been
- 51:24Speaker 3: That must have been something that took a while to
- 51:27Speaker 3: kind of settle and grapple with. Yeah.
- 51:29Speaker 2: I mean, what I was lucky about almost was how
- 51:35Speaker 2: much I had to do. I felt like if I
- 51:38Speaker 2: had been playing, if Leslie Knope was a character that
- 51:41Speaker 2: worked three days a week, I feel like I would
- 51:45Speaker 2: have been struggling because to your point, I just had to,
- 51:48Speaker 2: I like made a lot of, I feel like swings
- 51:51Speaker 2: and misses in the beginning. Like the show did kind
- 51:53Speaker 2: of did too, right? Like I think we were all
- 51:55Speaker 2: trying to figure out what the show was. And I
- 51:58Speaker 2: think it just took me a while to settle down.
- 52:00Speaker 2: You know, I used to make a joke when I
- 52:02Speaker 2: would be in people's movies, I'd be like, you know,
- 52:03Speaker 2: when you get into someone else's car and the music's too.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Loud, that may be how I am.
- 52:10Speaker 2: Like, feel free to turn me down. And I think
- 52:12Speaker 2: it took a while. And honestly, Adam, so much of
- 52:14Speaker 2: it was our work together where I felt, like grounded
- 52:19Speaker 2: on the ground as a performer enough to just settle.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Because so much of the beginning was.
- 52:27Speaker 3: Sketch energy, which is different. Right. Which is all about
- 52:31Speaker 3: right now we've got to like make it great. I mean,
- 52:34Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm just guessing that it's all about
- 52:36Speaker 3: like an immediate thing that you have to put everything into. Yeah.
- 52:40Speaker 3: And yeah. Yeah.
- 52:42Speaker 2: And I think one of the things that was so
- 52:45Speaker 2: fun about what we got to do is the camera
- 52:49Speaker 2: helped us, at least it helped me, have my feelings about,
- 52:55Speaker 2: you know, I tell people like.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Of course you, of course we love Ben.
- 53:01Speaker 2: We got to, like, Ben, we watch Ben watch Leslie
- 53:04Speaker 2: and we love Leslie. So, like, when people love Leslie,
- 53:08Speaker 2: we love them. And we got to watch Ben love her.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Because the camera, like we got to do so much
- 53:15Speaker 2: indirect stuff. Like we didn't have to face to face
- 53:18Speaker 2: all the time. We had feelings, our characters had feelings
- 53:20Speaker 2: for each other because of the camera.
- 53:22Speaker 3: That's right.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Though, even though, I mean, and it's such a beautiful genre,
- 53:27Speaker 2: that mockumentary, because it allows you to just even create
- 53:31Speaker 2: space and depth in the shot.
- 53:34Speaker 1: People are just not in the same room.
- 53:35Speaker 3: That's right. And like, I remember we always used to
- 53:37Speaker 3: say we loved it when there were spy shots through
- 53:40Speaker 3: like blinds because it made our acting better. Do you
- 53:43Speaker 3: remember that? Yes. Do you also remember this thing we
- 53:46Speaker 3: used to do where sometimes we would be doing a
- 53:48Speaker 3: scene and we'd be like, okay, I can't, I'm not
- 53:51Speaker 3: someone who can predict the future a hundred percent, but
- 53:55Speaker 3: I will say it was like a couple of times
- 53:58Speaker 3: a season. I will say, I can say with 100%
- 54:01Speaker 3: certainty that neither of us will ever be win an
- 54:06Speaker 3: award for acting for this scene. You would say it sometimes.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Let's just, I mean, and also on the other side,
- 54:18Speaker 2: I would sometimes say, you know, and I said this
- 54:20Speaker 2: on the podcast, like I would say like, Adam, your
- 54:22Speaker 2: acting is so good.
- 54:23Speaker 1: You'd be like, shut up. We're in the middle of
- 54:25Speaker 1: the scene. Like, because it was like, Oh my God. Um,
- 54:30Speaker 1: I mean, but Oh yeah. I mean, that's what I
- 54:33Speaker 1: love about working with you.
- 54:34Speaker 2: And I just feel like before we end, like I
- 54:36Speaker 2: just want to feed our fans a little bit more,
- 54:38Speaker 2: which is what, what do you think was the most
- 54:43Speaker 2: romantic scene between Ben and Leslie?
- 54:45Speaker 4: Oh man.
- 54:47Speaker 3: It's so sweet.
- 54:49Speaker 1: I know, but what's the most romantic?
- 54:50Speaker 3: The most romantic? I think, I think, well, there are
- 54:56Speaker 3: a couple of nominees. Okay. But I think, I think
- 55:01Speaker 3: maybe Smallest Park.
- 55:03Speaker 4: Ugh.
- 55:04Speaker 1: I just heard a little groan. I hope it's a
- 55:07Speaker 1: good groan.
- 55:08Speaker 3: Someone just being like, ugh.
- 55:12Speaker 1: I love Smallest Park.
- 55:13Speaker 3: Me too.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Nicole Holofcener, the great Nicole Holofcener directed that.
- 55:16Speaker 3: Chelsea wrote that one.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Chelsea Peretti wrote that episode.
- 55:20Speaker 3: And I remember really like feeling connected shooting that and
- 55:26Speaker 3: just being like, this is kind of feeling like how
- 55:29Speaker 3: special it is. it was making the show. And that was, yeah,
- 55:36Speaker 3: that was, but I don't know. What, what do you think?
- 55:39Speaker 2: Well, I have a lot. I mean, I feel that
- 55:42Speaker 2: that was such a big one. I feel like some
- 55:44Speaker 2: of the, I have such a affinity for the beginning
- 55:48Speaker 2: beginnings parts of Ben and Leslie, because I do think
- 55:51Speaker 2: it also just reminded me of like, we were, you know,
- 55:55Speaker 2: the show was deciding that they were going to love
- 55:57Speaker 2: each other too. And, um, I really love this tiny
- 56:02Speaker 2: moment when they realize they like the same spot, when
- 56:08Speaker 2: they like to sit under the sunflower mural.
- 56:11Speaker 1: I love that moment.
- 56:12Speaker 3: When I ask you if you know where that mural
- 56:15Speaker 3: is and your response, it's a rewindable moment.
- 56:21Speaker 1: I love that moment.
- 56:21Speaker 2: Between both of us because, and of course, Parks then
- 56:25Speaker 2: pays it off years later.
- 56:27Speaker 3: Years later.
- 56:28Speaker 1: By sitting underneath it.
- 56:30Speaker 3: Yep.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Um i also you know when we shot ben and
- 56:34Speaker 2: leslie's wedding it was so fun it was like we
- 56:37Speaker 2: were all just sitting there all day goofing around um
- 56:41Speaker 2: and it was so fun and like.
- 56:42Speaker 3: I think we had real champagne too maybe we.
- 56:45Speaker 2: Probably did yeah we probably did and then that probably
- 56:48Speaker 2: became a problem later in the day.
- 56:50Speaker 3: Yeah probably champagne not something to have when you're when
- 56:54Speaker 3: you have like A 10-hour workday ahead of you.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Speaking of champagne, maybe our fans would like to know
- 57:00Speaker 2: that on our last day of shooting, or one of
- 57:03Speaker 2: our last days, like, speaking of, like, romantic goodbyes, we
- 57:09Speaker 2: all climbed up on the top of the hair and
- 57:12Speaker 2: makeup trailer and, like, did a big toast up there.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Because we shot at a studio called CBS Radford.
- 57:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:20Speaker 1: And it was very, like, we wrote our names on
- 57:22Speaker 1: the wall.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:24Speaker 1: We were sharing a studio. Who had been there before?
- 57:27Speaker 1: Malcolm in the middle.
- 57:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:29Speaker 1: And maybe Seinfeld? No.
- 57:31Speaker 3: Seinfeld was on the lot, but not that particular stage.
- 57:35Speaker 3: Naomi and I have our office at Radford. You do?
- 57:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 57:38Speaker 3: Oh, my God. And I walk over there all the time.
- 57:41Speaker 2: That would have been my first time really shooting anything
- 57:44Speaker 2: on a studio. I had never had like a studio
- 57:45Speaker 2: experience before, and I was so lucky to do it there.
- 57:48Speaker 1: But yeah, we like got up on the trailer.
- 57:51Speaker 2: I mean, there was just so many proper goodbyes for
- 57:53Speaker 2: that show. We really, and Mike and the writers really
- 57:58Speaker 2: landed that plane.
- 57:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:00Speaker 3: And that's rare.
- 58:01Speaker 4: I know.
- 58:02Speaker 3: Like that is so rare. Are you asked all the
- 58:04Speaker 3: time if there'll be more parks or a reboot or something? Yeah.
- 58:09Speaker 3: I always feel like it's been, it's done. Like it
- 58:12Speaker 3: was perfectly done. Like how do you do that?
- 58:15Speaker 1: Maybe they should do like Muppet babies. They should do
- 58:17Speaker 1: like Parks and Rec babies.
- 58:18Speaker 3: That's right.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Like everyone has babies.
- 58:20Speaker 3: Like that Instagram thing where everyone's. Oh yeah, we've seen that.
- 58:24Speaker 3: The AI babies.
- 58:25Speaker 1: They should do AI babies.
- 58:27Speaker 3: But like a whole series. Yeah. Of all of us
- 58:30Speaker 3: just in a crib together. Yeah.
- 58:31Speaker 2: But they should do it like present day where like
- 58:33Speaker 2: the politics are really dark.
- 58:35Speaker 4: Yep. And mean.
- 58:37Speaker 1: And so it should be like, Tiny babies fighting each other.
- 58:40Speaker 3: Yeah, they hate each other. It's like apocalyptic political babies.
- 58:45Speaker 1: And they're all like, oh, no.
- 58:47Speaker 3: I hate you so much. I hate you so much.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Yay.
- 58:51Speaker 3: I mean.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Yay, I hate you.
- 58:53Speaker 3: Because we made the show in an era where public
- 58:57Speaker 3: service was encouraged and valued. Right. And funded. Yes. It was,
- 59:02Speaker 3: or I mean, you know, I'm sure it wasn't as
- 59:05Speaker 3: funded as much as it, should have been, but it
- 59:07Speaker 3: was funded at least. It's an entirely different tone to
- 59:13Speaker 3: American life.
- 59:14Speaker 1: I know.
- 59:15Speaker 2: And, you know, the many fun town halls that we
- 59:20Speaker 2: used to have to do were so fun to sit
- 59:22Speaker 2: together and do those and just have people like just
- 59:24Speaker 2: come up and score.
- 59:25Speaker 1: And be so funny.
- 59:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:27Speaker 3: The funniest people coming and doing stuff on the show.
- 59:30Speaker 2: We had the best, best rotating cast of geniuses come
- 59:34Speaker 2: through there. In fact, a lot of people should know
- 59:36Speaker 2: that at the end of the year, the show made
- 59:39Speaker 2: like a yearbook.
- 59:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:41Speaker 2: And it was a list of every single person that's
- 59:43Speaker 2: been in the show. And by the way, RIP Jonathan Joss.
- 59:47Speaker 1: I know. Ken Hotate.
- 59:49Speaker 4: What a sweetheart.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Sweet man and- Funny. Very funny and so sad for
- 59:54Speaker 1: him and his family and his husband.
- 59:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:56Speaker 2: You know when you have that feeling sometimes like you
- 59:58Speaker 2: wish you could go back to high school and enjoy it?
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: That's how it felt. Like we actually got to do
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: it in real time.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: Because it was genuinely goofy and funny. Yeah. Like the
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: best jokes ever.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: What is one of the favorite funny scenes you got
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: to do? So many.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: So many. I mean, I always think of you guys
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: on the ice at the ice skating rink with Gloria Estefan. Yeah.
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: I mean, that is, I remember at the table read,
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: that was, we couldn't stop laughing because it was so funny.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike Scully wrote that episode.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Oh, Mike Scully is the best.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: And we got to walk across that ice. And I
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: remember just thinking, this is so fun.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: What a fun job. That wasn't even in that scene. Yeah,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: that's right.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: We should probably just Photoshop.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: We should put me in that scene. That's why I
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: brought it up. I feel like it would, I deserve it.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: You know, my kids watched the show during the pandemic
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: like everyone else did. And I rewatched a lot of
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: stuff and it was so fun because I remembered the feeling.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: Of how everything was to shoot it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: But I didn't remember what was going to happen.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: It is weird to watch yourself doing something and have
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: no recollection of it happening in your life. It's so strange.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: What are you, I ask this to everybody, like, what
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: are you laughing at right now? I mean, first of all,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: you know, do you, you're very serious now.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: I don't. Thank you for acknowledging that. I don't laugh anymore.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I mean, all you're doing is running and typing.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Running. And if you'll, I don't know if you noticed,
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: but while I'm running, I'm not laughing.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: I didn't see you crack a smile once.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Because it's hard to laugh while you're running because it's
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: not funny.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: You're running for your life.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: I got to get there like as fast as possible.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: And again, I'd love to ask you where, where are
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: you going?
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Where am I going?
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: I'm going down the hall. Got to run down the hall.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: What am I laughing at? Are you watching anything?
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: Are you, like.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: Anything, like, super funny? Yeah.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: What are you, like... What are you, Naomi, liking right now?
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Or did you see something recently?
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: Or.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: You know what I've been watching recently is... I've been
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: re-watching Sex and the City.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: The Ridge?
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: Yeah. It's so... fucking good so good it is so.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Good such a love letter to that time period yes
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: were you ever on it because every actor i know but.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: Like justin thoreau uh bobby cannavale will yep everybody.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Yep um slattery slattery elizabeth banks yes it's a real
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: who's who.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: Yeah everybody in new york um but it is so
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: good and to something i like doing is watching it
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: and just kind of thinking about all of this happening
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: for the first time. Like women sitting at a table
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: together talking about whatever, talking about themselves and talking about
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: like how weird someone's cum smells. It's just like, holy shit,
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: this is incredible. Like that has never been on TV before,
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: let alone said out loud for people. And just how
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Samantha is just, The most sex positive, like incredible, like
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: not a moment of embarrassment. Never. Like so fucking cool.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: So good. And Sarah Jessica Parker is so great at
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: being the center of a show, servicing everybody else, but
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: also keeping that motor going in the middle. It's so good.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: There's a couple of shows that make me, when I'm
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: in Los Angeles, really miss New York.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Old Sex and the City and Law and Order.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: Oh yeah, sure. Incredible.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Were you on a Law and Order?
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: I was on Law and Order once. I'm so jealous.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: You weren't on Law and Order?
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: No, that was my dream.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: Really? Never.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: I mean, I didn't see, I wasn't auditioning in that way.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: I didn't think I was a good enough actor, but
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I wanted to be on Law.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: And Order so bad.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: What was your character? Why do I not know that
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: you were on Law and Order? I should know this.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: Timothy Dinkins. I don't know what the name was. We
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: can look it up. I was working at the grocery
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: store arranging fruits or vegetables when they came up and
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: first started talking to me. And I remember my agent
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: at the time calling me right after it aired and
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: being like, you don't know how to handle those vegetables.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: You weren't doing anything.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: Who were the peeps? Was it the Orbach years?
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: It was, no, it was Dennis Farina.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Dennis Farina.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: Who was so cool. And Jesse L.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: Martin.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: Fantastic.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Did you meet Esa Patha?
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: No.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: If you're listening, I need to get you on the show.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: She's great.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: She's incredible.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Sam Waterston. Yeah.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: So you went to the court.
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: I went to court.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: You got to the law part.
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: Pablo Schreiber and I were in court together. And he
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: ended up being guilty and I was the red herring,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: What were you accused of doing?
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: Probably killing someone. I don't totally remember. Well, we're going
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: to watch it right now. Are you finding my character's name?
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: And if it's Timothy whatever I said, that would be amazing.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Okay, Timothy Dinkins.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Timothy Dinkins.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Was Adam Scott on Law and Order?
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: The trail leads to a pair of perpetrators.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Another mercenary played by Pablo Schreiber and the brother of
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: one of Schreiber's fellow mercenaries who was killed in a
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: roadside ambush by presumably Al-Qaeda?
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: God, I don't know.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: The brother, you forgot the Al-Qaeda part?
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: I did.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: The brother is Adam Scott and he is the only
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: true innocent.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: That's right. In the whole show.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Thank you. I wanted to play the opposite.
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: See, because- You wanted to be a murderer.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: I wanted to be like the one that you would
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: not suspect. And then it's like, I burned the whole
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: place down.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: I fucking did it, yeah.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: I wanted to be a pyro. Because I felt like of.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: All the things. You wanted to specifically be a pyromaniac?
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I wish I wanted to be like a baby-faced pyro.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Someone who just is like, you know, she seems like
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: she's helping the police. And then she's like, they deserved it.
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: You know, whatever kind of weird psycho thing. Okay, so
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: sex in the city is what you're watching and laughing at.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm, it's great. And you know, when you're, I
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: saw something recently that said that repeated, if you have
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: the urge to watch something you've seen before and repeat
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: viewings is a sign of a particular kind of intelligence.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: No, this is real.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: It's a sign of intelligence?
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: Intelligence. I saw this on Instagram. On Instagram.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Where did you see this on?
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: On Instagram. Okay, yeah. And it was a picture of
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: someone watching TV and it just said that. There was
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: nothing to back it up. And I was like, oh, great.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: We'll watch more sex in the city.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: You saw it on Dr.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Instagram? Frankie, my daughter and I just flew together from
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: New York like night before last and we got on
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: the plane and I got in my seat and she
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: was across the road from me and I got in
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: and like suddenly I think, started watching Sex and the
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: City that I had downloaded. And she was like, Dad,
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: are you watching more Sex and the City? Yeah.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I love you, Adam.
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: I love you, Amy. Thank you for doing this. Thank
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: you for having me. Are you kidding? This is so fun.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: We were really excited to do this one today.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: Oh, that's very nice. I love having you. I love
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: being here.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: Thanks for coming.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Come back when we do our big, we'll do a
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: big park show.

- 1:07:56Speaker 2: that was an amazing episode with Adam. We got so deep.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: I love talking to him and he's just the best.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: And he mentioned Six Feet Under, a show that he
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: got close to booking.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: And that did remind me of the Parks finale.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: You know, for people that watch the end of Parks
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: and Recreation, Mike Schur and I were talking about the
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: idea that in comedies, you don't always get to see
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: the future. You don't always get to see what happens
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: to these characters that you've grown to love. And so
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: we were so blown away by the Six Feet Under finale.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: And I think we were heavily influenced by the idea
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: of that when we wrote the finale of Parks and Recreation.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: So watch Six Feet Under. And honestly, it's so good.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: I mean, and better because Adam didn't get cast in
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: it you know what I mean Michael Hall is incredible
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: so um you know Adam's loss is our win and
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: um and check that show out and um you know
