- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, welcome to Chrono Today.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Last week we saw the trials of Jesus and just how incredibly illegal all of those trials were.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: And today we're going to pick up where we left off.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to look at the crucifixion, the burial, and the resurrection.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: So we have a lot of ground to cover.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Let's pray and ask Jesus to help us with this today.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Jesus, I do pray that you would be honored and that you would be glorified today, that we would see anew what you accomplished on the cross through the crucifixion, what you accomplished in the resurrection.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And we just give you praise for this, for everything that we're going to see.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Might your spirit come and just plant it deep in our souls, I pray in your name.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: The crucifixion of Jesus had a huge impact.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Jesus was impacted in every way that a person can be impacted through the crucifixion.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: What do I mean by that?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Today we will look at the humiliation that he suffered.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: We will look at the physical agony that he suffered.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: We will look at the spiritual part of it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: We will look at the miraculous that happened and took place.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And we will look at the prophecies and the prophetic impact of the crucifixion.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: First, the humiliation.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: John 19, 1 through 3.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, Hail, King of the Jews.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And they struck him in the face.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Matthew 27.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Then the governors, soldiers, took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Hail, King of the Jews, they said.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: They spit on him and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Then they led him away to crucify him.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Although it was unwarranted and it was unnecessary, Pilate had Jesus scourged.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: There were two kinds of scourging in Jesus' day, the Jewish kind and the Roman kind.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: The Jewish law said that victims could not receive more than forty lashes.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: The Roman scourging took place at the hands of a soldier trained in torture techniques.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: There were no set number of stripes to be administered, and the law said nothing about the parts of the body that could be assaulted.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: There were three forms of flogging that the Romans administered.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: The lightest of these was the fasgyo, however you say that, and it was a light beating that only hooligans experienced.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: The second was the flagatio, which was a severe beating that criminals who were guilty of more serious crimes received.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And the third kind, the verbrachio, was the most brutal.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: The worst criminals, including those sentenced to crucifixion, underwent that punishment.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Jesus received the first or second of these beatings before his sentencing, and he received the third after his sentencing.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: In sport, those big burly soldiers surround Jesus and they place a short robe on him.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Standing there naked from the waist down, his tormentors make a crown of those long, huge, sharp thorns and stab it down on his head and begin insulting him.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: They spat at him, they beat him, they hit him again and again.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: They mocked him, they slapped and punched him, all while cursing him.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And all of this he suffered all alone.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Then Pilate has the battered and bleeding Jesus brought out, telling the Jewish council that he finds no basis for a charge against him.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And you would think that at the sight of Jesus being beaten and bloodied, that it would placate them.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: And that's actually what Pilate was hoping it would do.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: But instead, it's like his, they see his blood, and it just stirred their appetites for more blood.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: And they cried out repeatedly for the ultimate punishment of crucifixion.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Like everything else about the death of Jesus and his death, Jesus knew that he would be scourged.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: He knew he would take this kind of beating.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: He mentioned it when he predicted his sufferings in Matthew 20, 19.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: He knew that before he died from the torture of the cross, that he would endure the humiliating, brutal beatings at the hands of the Romans.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: He accepted those blows and his body was ripped open on the post for us.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: He was taking the punishment of the sins of the whole world so that we wouldn't have to suffer the consequences of our transgressions.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And by his stripes we are healed.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: The humiliation that Jesus suffered was for you and it was for me.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And next we see the physical.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: There they offered Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall, but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: John 19 says, carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Many Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, do not write the King of the Jews, but that he claimed to be the King of the Jews.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Pilate might have been appeasing the Jews, but Pilate would have the last word.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And now you understand more clearly why Pilate says that.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Criminals condemned to crucifixion normally carried all or only the cross piece of their crosses.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: But with the severity of the beatings, the scourgings, and the absolute exhaustion that Jesus had, he was too weak to carry his cross all the way to Golgotha.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: All the gospel writers identified identified the place of Jesus' crucifixion as the place of the skull.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: In Jerusalem, there is a garden tomb, and it's to believe where he was crucified and where he was buried.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: And there's also the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: The first time I went there, we walked generally through the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, but we spent more time in the garden tomb.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: At that time, I would have told you for sure the garden tomb is where Jesus' burial was, and that just up from the garden tomb was where he would have been crucified.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: But the second time I went to Israel, to Jerusalem, we did the Via Della Rosa.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And when you go through the Via de la Rosa, which is the stations of the cross, you absolutely get the sense that you are going up a hill.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And then when you get into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, there's a spiral staircase that takes you all the way to the top of the church.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And once you get up there, you look down and there's plexigrap, plexiglass on the floor, and underneath that you see rock.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And that at that time, that second time, I could absolutely tell that I was going up a hill.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: So it was either in the garden tomb or in the garden area or in where the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is that Jesus was crucified, or it was none of those places, but somewhere else.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Either way.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Either way, the location is somewhere there in Jerusalem.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: The crucifixion was one of the most horrendous deaths ever devised.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: One commentator has said, no more cruel and inhumane method of execution has ever been devised than that of crucifixion.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: There was no harder way to die than upon a Roman cross.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: The cross was an excellent deterrent for any who might consider criminal acts against society as well.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: It was a death that was both painful and public.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: If the criminal survived his scourging, first of all, if he survived that, then he was forced to carry his own cross to the place of the crucifixion by the longest possible route.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: This served to humiliate the wrongdoer and to caution those who witnessed his punishment.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: And taking him on a long way around would you would impact more people.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Once at the site of the execution, the criminal would be fixed to a cross, of which there were several varieties.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: It was not necessary to raise the individual to any great height, but only so that his feet would not be touching the ground.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Commonly the victim bore a sign around his neck as he went on the route that they took him, which would tell what his offense had been and what he was being executed for.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: He would carry this around his neck as he made his way there, and then that placard would be fixed to the cross above him.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: The precise cause of death could come from shock, exposure, starvation, heart failure, suffocation, or any number of those things.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: But slowly the life of the sufferer would be snuffed out.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: If for some reason they lingered longer than the guards wanted them to, there was an easy solution.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: They would just break the legs.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Because if they broke the legs, then the person couldn't lift themselves up and get air into their diaphragm.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: This is the kind of death that Jesus suffered for you and for me.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the last words that Jesus uttered while he was on the cross.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Each one of them is significant.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: First, he said, Father, forgive them.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: It was for the forgiveness of sins that he was on the cross, right?
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Then he said, Today you shall be with me in paradise.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: And this shows us that it's never too late to receive Jesus, to believe in him.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: That criminal, that's what Jesus said to him.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Today you're going to be with me.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Then he said, Woman, behold your son and behold your mother.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: His care for Mary is one of the last things that he's doing on the cross.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: And it shows his love for her as one of the last acts.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And giving her care to John, the disciple, was a beautiful tribute to her.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: And in her agony, it must have comforted her that he was addressing that.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Then he said, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: And I think that just represents that the weight of the wrath of God is being placed on him.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Then he says, I am thirsty.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And that shows us his humility.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And then it is finished.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: His life's work is done.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And then, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: The Father, whose will he was accomplishing, would receive him.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Chuck Swindell says, with these words the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: The light of the world closes his eyes and pillows his head on his father's chest, and he rests from his work.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: What had Jesus finished?
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: His suffering was finished.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: His work was finished.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: The prophecies of his first coming were finished.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: The atonement for our sins was finished.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And God's will for him on this earth was finished.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Nothing else needed or needs doing.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Next, the spiritual.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: And the criminals insulted him.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: In the same way, the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Aren't you the Christ?
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Save yourself and us.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: The passers by, the religious leaders, the soldiers, the criminals, all mocked and verbally abused Jesus as he hung there on the cross.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: All of this would have had an effect on him.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: The very ones he had created and that he had come to redeem were forsaking him and cursing him.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And then there were the women.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: There were the women who had played such an incredible part in his ministry and in his life.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: And they are standing nearby, agonizing over what they are watching and watching his suffering.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: They had to be asking themselves, why is this happening?
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: I don't understand.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: It doesn't make sense.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: And why doesn't he come down and show himself to be the Son of God?
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: We know he has the power to do that.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: They didn't understand what was happening.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: And they were powerless to change it.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: They dearly loved him, and their inability to do anything about this completely would have undone them.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And you know how difficult it is when women can't understand something or fix something.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: And where were the disciples?
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Their absence at the foot of the cross, except for John, would have also been an insult and would have hurt him deeply.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: As deeply as all of these things were, though, to the Lord Jesus, the greatest sorrow was not the physical pain or the rejection by men, even those who were his most intimate friends.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: The most difficult part was the separation from God that he was going to experience.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Because here on the cross, when he utters the words from Psalm 22, 1, they perfectly convey the agony of soul that the Lord Jesus is experiencing when he says, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Here is the hell our Lord dreaded, but nevertheless experienced for us.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Hell is not merely the presence of pain and suffering, but the absence of God in the midst of that pain.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: 2 Thessalonians 1 9 says, They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: The anticipation of having the majesty and the power restored to him must have helped sustain Jesus through his suffering.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Those who do not believe in Jesus might get a glimpse of his glory at some future point before they are consigned to hell.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Where they will forever be separated from the glory and the majesty of Almighty God.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Forever.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: We, on the other hand, get to experience the majesty and the glory of the Lord Jesus.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Those who do not believe may glimpse it, but they will never experience it.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: One morning, probably 20 plus years ago, as I was reading through the Bible, I came, I was in the Psalms and I came to Psalm 22, 1, and I read it, and I just stopped.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: And for like the hundredth time, I questioned God about that, and I said, Why did you say that on the cross, Jesus?
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I know what the theologians say was the reason that you said it, but I want to know why you said it.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: And then I kept reading, and this is what I read.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: All who see me mock me, they hurl insults, shaking their heads, saying, He trusts in the Lord, let the Lord rescue him, let him deliver him, since he delights in him.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Many bulls surround me, strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Roaring lions tearing their flesh open their mouths wide against me.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: My heart has turned to wax within me, it is melted away within me.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: My strength is dried up like a potsherd, my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: You lay me in the dust of death.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Dogs have surrounded me, a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: I can count all my bones.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: People stare and gloat over me.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: For he has not despised or disbained the suffering of the afflicted one.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: He has not hidden his face from him, but has listened to his cry for help.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: That morning, as I read those verses, I felt as if the Lord was speaking directly to me and said, That's why I spoke them on the cross.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: Think about it.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Psalm 22, which is where those verses come from, is right before 23, the shepherd's psalm.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Every Jew would have known these Psalms, both of them.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: I believe that Jesus was giving them one more opportunity to identify that he was the Messiah.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: This is the fulfillment of exactly what he is doing.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: If they had been listening, they would have tied it together.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Wait a minute.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: We've just nailed him with his hands and his feet.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: We've just divided his garments and cast lot for his clothing.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: So by quoting the beginning of that amazing prophetic psalm, he was saying, in effect, it's me.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: I am Messiah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: The fulfillment of this psalm that the Jews and the Pharisees all knew.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Even on the cross, his heart is still for his people, Israel.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: He wanted them to know who he was.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: And that morning, as God spoke that to my heart, and the pieces came together, I sobbed.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: And I cried for days and days.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: And that moment will stay with me forever.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: The people who are causing Jesus' suffering and death are carrying out God's foreordained will and plan.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: This is all evidence of the sovereignty of God.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Jesus did not die with a whimper, but with a shout, with a cry of triumph and victory.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: It is finished.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Here's the sequence of events.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Jesus cried triumphantly, It is finished, followed by, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And then last, after this, Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: Before his arrest, Jesus said in John 10, 17 and 18, The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life only to take it up again.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: This command I received from my father.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: It was too soon for Jesus to have died.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: Summoning the centurion, he asked if Jesus was already dead.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: The legs of the other two, the criminals, had to be broken, but Jesus was dead because he had fulfilled all of Scripture.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: He gave up his spirit and died.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Mark 15, 39.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: And when the centurion who was standing right in front of him saw the way he breathed his last, he said, Truly, this man was the Son of God.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: The spiritual distance that Jesus suffered from his father was for you and for me, so that we would never have to experience it ourselves.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: During the crucifixion, there were many miraculous things that happened.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: The first miracle was the supernatural phenomenon of three-hour period of darkness.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Matthew 27, 45, from the sixth hour until the ninth hour, darkness came over all the land.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Darkness for three hours in the middle of the day.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: This is speculation on my part, but I've wondered if the darkness was a way that the Father blessed the Son on the cross.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: God knew that Christ would pay the penalty for our sin, but perhaps, just perhaps, God thought, God's thought might have been just because he has to die, this kind of death, does not mean that I have to let everyone watch the whole thing.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: If I were God, that's how I would have thought.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: Jesus was the light of the world, and the light was being snuffed out.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Of course it was dark.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: The second miracle was the earthquake, which occurred simultaneously with the death of Jesus.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: The earth shook and the rocks split, the tombs broke open, and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: I wish there were more details about that.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Hello, I thought you were dead.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Now you're here.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: And the last miracle was the temple veil.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn into from the top to the bottom.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: And what do we know about this veil?
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: It was that thick veil that separated the holy place from the holy of holies.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: They say that it was a handwith thickness.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: So the fact that it was torn from the top to the bottom could only be a miracle.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: And at the precise moment of Jesus' death, that veil symbolically tells us and reminds us that because of Jesus' death, we have the ability to enter into the Holy of Holies.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: We can approach God now on the basis of Jesus' torn body and his blood.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: And then the prophetic.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: From the time of man's fall in the garden in Genesis 3.15, God had promised a provision for man's sin.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: We've seen over and over and over in this study that we come to God God's way, and God's way is through the shedding of the blood, the blood, the shedding of the blood of the innocent on behalf of the guilty.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: That is exactly what we see here on the cross.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: We've already seen how beautifully Jesus fulfilled Psalm 22.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: But now let's look at how Jesus' death fulfilled Isaiah 53.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Surely he took our infirmities and carried our sorrows.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: But he was pierced with for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: The punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: We all, like sheep, have gone astray.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Each of us has turned to his own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: He was cut off from the land of the living for the transgression of my people.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: He was stricken.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: He was assigned a grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: And though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death and was numbered with the transgressors, for he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: It is my heart's prayer that someday the Jewish people will read Isaiah 53, and they will recognize that everything it talks about, Jesus accomplished.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: That they will read Psalm 22 and they will hear it.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: And they will mourn for him as you would mourn for your own firstborn son.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Let it be so, Lord.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Let it be so.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Zechariah 12, 10, they will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: All the prophecies were fulfilled through Jesus Christ for you and for me.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: To leave us with no doubts in our minds.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: The humiliation that Jesus suffered was for you and for me.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: The physical agony that Jesus suffered was for you and for me.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: The spiritual distance that Jesus suffered from his Father was for you and for me, so that we would never have to experience it ourselves.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: The miracles at Jesus' death were for you and for me to build our faith.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: And the prophecies were fulfilled through Jesus Christ for you and for me to leave no doubt in our minds.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: And now we move to the burial.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Today we leave the care of our deceased loved ones to an undertaker, and we're grateful for the ability to do that.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: But in Jesus' day, of course, they didn't have that.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: Family and friends were responsible for preparing the body.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and alloys, about 75 pounds.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it with spices in strips of linen.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Because it was a Jewish day of preparation, and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: The custom of the Jews was to wrap the entire body with these thin strips of cloth, but with that mixture of myrrh and alloys, which would have been kind of like a paste, and it would have pasted the cloth together almost like mummification.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: It would have glued it and it would have been to stench the decay and smell of decay.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: Joseph and Nicodemus were friends of Jesus.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: Had there been the faintest clue that there was any pulse in Jesus, they would have worked to resuscitate him rather than to prepare him for burial.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Both Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were rich, God-fearing members of the Sanhedrin who followed Jesus in secret.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: We know that.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: Nicodemus brought that huge amount of spices to prepare his body, and that would have been just a reflection of his respect for him.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Their work had to be hasty because sunset was approaching quickly and all the work had to cease because of the Sabbath.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Pilate probably granted Joseph the ability to take his body and prepare it, knowing that he would be respectful with Jesus.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Matthew 27.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: The next day, the one after preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Far to Pilate.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: Sir, they said, We remember that while he was still alive, that deceiver said, After three days I will rise again.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, his disciples might come and steal the body and tell people that he has been raised from the dead.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: This last deception will be worse than the first.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Take a guard, Pilate answered, Go and make the tomb as secure as you know how.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting a guard.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: Now don't you think that Roman soldiers know how to make something secure, right?
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: But nothing could hold Jesus down.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: This request by the Pharisees shows that the Jewish leaders knew what Jesus had taught.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: They knew that he had said he would rise again.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: And next we see the resurrection.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: We face a challenge whenever we come to the resurrection because it's difficult to put all the pieces together in chronology, in the sequence of events.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: And and and this is due to the fact that not one of the gospels puts it in that order that things happened.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: It's just very piecemeal, and so you kind of have to study it and figure out what his post-resurrection appearances were.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: And that's what we're looking at.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Now, we in the church, we know and we have confidence in the resurrection today.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: But the original witnesses, these people who are experiencing this for the very first time, they had to be convinced that it had occurred.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: The resurrection had been promised in Scripture and it had been promised by Jesus.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: But only slowly and methodically did the disciples come to see that it had truly come to pass, the way Jesus said.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: So let's look chronology at chronologically at the events.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: The morning of day one, several women, including Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James, go to the tomb.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: These women don't go to the tomb believing in the resurrection, right?
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: They didn't go to check to see if the tomb was empty.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: The fact that they took spices along with them to anoint his body again shows us what they expected to find.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: They expected Jesus to be dead and in the tomb.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: They are alarmed when they see that the huge stone has been rolled to the side and that the tomb is empty.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Evidently, Mary Magdalene at this point leaves the other women and she runs to Peter and John to tell them that the tomb is empty.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: She tells them, they have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they have put him.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: While the women are still right there, this happens.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead?
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: He is not here, he has risen.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Remember how he told you while he was still with you in Galilee, the Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day be raised again.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Then they remembered his words.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, Peter and John have run to the tomb to investigate Mary's claim.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Mary follows them back to the tomb, and she arrives before they leave.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: Peter and John discover that the tomb is empty, but they encounter no angel.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: The other women by this time have gone on to tell the other disciples about the empty tomb and what the angels had said to them about those disciples.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: But the disciples don't believe them.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: After Peter and John leave, Mary Magdalene stays by the tomb, weeping and fearful.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: Peering inside, she sees two angels again who say, Woman, why are you crying?
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: They have taken my Lord away, she said, and I don't know where they have put him.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: At this she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: He asked her, Woman, why are you crying?
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: Who is it you are looking for?
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Thinking he was the gardener, she said, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: Like she could go and get him.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Jesus said to her, Mary.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, Raboni, which means teacher.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: When Jesus calls Mary by her name, she recognizes his voice and turns and sees him, and filled with joy, she clings to him.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: This is Jesus' first appearance.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: And what a privilege for Mary Magdalene to be the first one.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: She stands there clinging to him, and he tells her, Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: Jesus then sends her back to the disciples to proclaim this news.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: So by this time, the other women have departed from the disciples who didn't believe them, and they were on their way back home when Jesus suddenly appears to them.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: Greetings, he said.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: They came to him, clasped his feet, and worshipped him.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: There they will see me.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: This is Jesus' second appearance to women, I might add.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Later that day, two disciples are on their way to Emmaus and they are pondering what they have heard about the resurrection.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Jesus comes up behind them, and and but they are prevented from understanding that it's Jesus.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: He opens the word to them, and then they have a meal, and he breaks bread, and when he breaks bread, they suddenly realize that it is Jesus.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: That is Jesus' third appearance.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: Those two return to Jerusalem that evening and they go straight to the disciples.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: And at some point, Peter drew apart from the others, probably for a walk or something, and Jesus appears to Peter, and that's his fourth appearance.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine the flood of emotion as these stories of Jesus' appearance come rushing in?
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: It would almost be like a newsroom with a breaking story where all of these, all of these reports are coming in really fast, and it's just exciting.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: They're all talking at once.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: They're trying to put the pieces together when suddenly, all of a sudden, Jesus is in their midst.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Luke 24.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: He said to them, Why are you troubled?
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: And why do doubts rise in your minds?
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Look at my hands and my feet.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: It is I myself.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: Touch me and see, a ghost does not have flesh and blood, as you see I have.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: When he had said this, he bowed that he showed them his hands and feet.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: And while they still did not believe, believe it, because of joy and amazement, he asked them, Do you have anything here to eat?
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate in their presence.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: He said to them, This is what I told you while I was still with you.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: Everything, everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: How amazing is that statement to you now.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: Everything must be fulfilled that was written about Jesus in the law, in the prophets, and in the Psalms.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Then he opened their minds so they could understand scripture.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: He told them, This is what is written the Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: You are my witnesses of these things.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: I am going to send you what my Father has promised, but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: This is Jesus' fifth appearance.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: There's no scriptural evidence that Jesus appeared to the disciples during that week that followed, but the next account of an appearance says eight days later, namely on the following Sunday.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Jesus appears to the gathered disciples, and this time Thomas is there with him.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: This is Jesus' sixth appearance.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: The apostles received instructions to return to Galilee and they where they would see Jesus.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: And so they spent that week journeying the 60 miles to the north.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: And the next appearance that they see is Jesus at the Sea of Galilee, where the disciples are fishing, and Jesus calls them from the lakeside.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: They come to the shore and have a meal with him, and that's his seventh appearance.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: This is where Peter and Jesus take a walk, and where Jesus reaffirms Peter and asks him, Do you love me?
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: Feed my sheep?
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Take care of the flock.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: It's in your hands now.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: There are more appearances during this time, but and Dr.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: Luke sums it up really well in Acts 1:3.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: He appeared to them over a period of 40 days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Of course, he was with them for 40 days, right?
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: That number 40 just turns up over and over and over.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: Some of the things I love the most about this post-resurrection appearances is that he allowed the women to see him first.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know why, but what a blessing that he did.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: And that he was fully in charge of all of his 12 appearances over 40 days.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: 12 appearances, 40 days.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: Coincidence?
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: I think not.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: I've elaborated these, these, all of these appearances on your handout.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: Through Jesus' crucifixion, his burial, and his resurrection, we see the sovereign will of God, the Father.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: It all happened exactly as Scripture foretold that it would happen.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: Nothing happened by chance, everything was divinely orchestrated.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: I hope and pray that today that builds your faith.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: It certainly builds mine.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: Lord Jesus, how we praise you, how we worship you.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: You are so amazing.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: We give you thanks and praise for all the things you suffered on the cross, the humiliation, the absolute torture, the spiritual distance, all of it, Jesus, all of it.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: We could spend from now until you come for us discussing this and not get to the end of everything that you accomplished in the crucifixion, in the resurrection.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: You are that powerful, that profound.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: What you did was so all-encompassing.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: We will never be able to grasp it until we are with you, until we see you in your majesty and your glory, and we know what you laid aside for us, what you accomplished for us.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: We're so grateful to you.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: We love you so much, Lord.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: Give us the ability to just love you more and more and more.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: We ask this in your glorious and perfect and powerful name.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: Thank you for pondering these things with me today.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: And I just ask God to bless you.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: I'll see you next time.
