Speaker 4: Good morning, Dave? How are you?
• 2:36
Speaker 5: I am fine? What's going on? Man?
• 2:38
Speaker 4: You've been making on first couple of days of school,
• 2:40
Speaker 4: getting the girls off, getting back on a schedule.
• 2:43
Speaker 5: Mean I favor pop up that microphone.
• 2:45
Speaker 4: You're there getting back on a schedule, which is awesome.
• 2:48
Speaker 5: Okay, So and then what I know you love to
• 2:50
Speaker 5: talk about your girls, so I'll give you an opportunity.
• 2:53
Speaker 5: How old are they? What grades ago?
• 2:54
Speaker 4: We have a fifth grader and a second grader. They
• 2:56
Speaker 4: are both at Holtz Elementary School and they couldn't have
• 3:00
Speaker 4: been more excited to get started. And the school's the best,
• 3:03
Speaker 4: their teachers are great.
• 3:04
Speaker 5: And the fifth graders went to middle school. Sixth graders
• 3:07
Speaker 5: go to middle school, I think because I know they
• 3:09
Speaker 5: because back back in the back hold back in.
• 3:11
Speaker 4: The old days, the seventh grade is when junior high
• 3:13
Speaker 4: school started. Junior Were you a junior high or junior
• 3:16
Speaker 4: high school? And to be fair, I actually liked that
• 3:18
Speaker 4: system way better. It doesn't seem like we should be
• 3:21
Speaker 4: trying to push freshmen together with seniors as fast as
• 3:25
Speaker 4: we do. I thought the seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven,
• 3:28
  Speaker 4: twelve worked great.
• 3:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know when they changed back when, back
• 3:32
Speaker 5: in the day when I was in school, it was seventh,
• 3:34
Speaker 5: eighth and ninth was junior high, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth
• 3:37
Speaker 5: was senior and then I know my hometown, what they
• 3:40
Speaker 5: did was they they merged the two competing junior highs
• 3:44
Speaker 5: into a middle school. Then they went to the fifth, sixth,
• 3:46
Speaker 5: seventh and eighth was middle school, and then the ninth graders,
• 3:49
Speaker 5: which is even for the high school.
• 3:51
Speaker 4: There's no I mean, my daughter's in fifth grade. She
• 3:53
Speaker 4: doesn't have anything in common with an eighth grader. I mean,
• 3:55
Speaker 4: it's like two different species of people. Are you Were
• 3:58
Speaker 4: you a Scott Skyhawk?
• 4:00
Speaker 6: No, where'd you go to from?
• 4:01
  Speaker 5: Logan?
• 4:02
  Speaker 7: Oh?
• 4:02
  Speaker 3: Logan?
• 4:02
  Speaker 5: Sorry?
• 4:02
Speaker 4: I thought you were from.
• 4:03
Speaker 5: Moving My bad dude?
• 4:05
Speaker 3: Do you want you want me to turn this.
• 4:08
Speaker 4: The other end of this table? So so you couldn't fight.
• 4:10
Speaker 5: TJ is from boon Cap, but he was a I
• 4:14
Speaker 5: think uh Sherman tide ers one in one of the schools. Now,
• 4:17
  Speaker 5: I'm a Logan wildcat man. Actually I grew I spent
• 4:20
Speaker 5: the first up through sixth grade. I my family lived
• 4:25
Speaker 5: in the Man area.
• 4:26
Speaker 4: Okay, so you might have been a hillbilly well, but.
• 4:28
Speaker 5: Then we transferred to Logan, So I call myself a
• 4:30
Speaker 5: billy cat. I got so I graduated from Logan. I
• 4:34
Speaker 5: was in Man with people like Rupy Phillips, certain people
• 4:36
Speaker 5: like that of my There's a.
• 4:37
Speaker 4: Little restaurant on there called Keith since one of my
• 4:40
Speaker 4: absolute favorites, Anthony Bourdain, went there. One of the better
• 4:42
Speaker 4: burgers in the game.
• 4:43
Speaker 5: It is. It is great hot dogs too. They do
• 4:46
Speaker 5: have a great Mall Dog named after his grandmother, M A. W.
• 4:50
Speaker 5: The Mall Dog. So thank you for coming to the
• 4:53
Speaker 5: discussion between mister mccusky myself. All right, so let's let's
• 4:56
Speaker 5: move on. Big news made yesterday, made not not only
• 4:59
Speaker 5: news here in West Virginia. But I was told correctly,
• 5:03
Speaker 5: you were on Fox News last night.
• 5:04
Speaker 4: This morning, but it wasn't actually about our lawsuit. We
• 5:07
Speaker 4: were talking about some other things this morning on a
• 5:09
Speaker 4: Fox but we announced a really important lawsuit against a
• 5:13
Speaker 4: company called express Scripts. And what express Scripts is is
• 5:16
Speaker 4: a pharmacy benefit manager, and we have sued them for
• 5:20
Speaker 4: their role in being sort of an architect and a
• 5:24
Speaker 4: key player on the opioid crisis. And a lot of
• 5:27
Speaker 4: people are starting to sort of learn what pharmacy benefit
• 5:30
Speaker 4: managers are. But in the coming weeks and months, we'll
• 5:33
Speaker 4: have a lot more to talk about in our lawsuit.
• 5:35
Speaker 4: But suffice to say that these folks have sort of
• 5:38
Speaker 4: weaseled their way into our healthcare system, and since they've
• 5:41
Speaker 4: gotten there, it's pretty noticeable how much our drug prices
• 5:44
Speaker 4: have gone up. And they were the only people that
• 5:48
Speaker 4: held the data between prescribers and pharmacies, and so there
• 5:53
Speaker 4: was one group of people who was able to maximize
• 5:56
Speaker 4: the damage by understanding how many pills were being prescribed
• 6:00
Speaker 4: and to whom they were being prescribed and they failed
• 6:04
Speaker 4: in their duty to to to to follow state law,
• 6:07
Speaker 4: to follow federal law, and we're gonna hold them accountable
• 6:10
  Speaker 4: for it.
• 6:11
Speaker 5: Now, this is a little bit different for me, and
• 6:13
Speaker 5: you can correct me if I'm wrong, because with this
• 6:15
Speaker 5: express script service, and we're going to break it down
• 6:17
Speaker 5: to exactly what it was that they are alleged to
• 6:19
Speaker 5: have done. Normally, when you see these lawsuits, it's against
• 6:22
Speaker 5: pharmaceutical companies. You know, it's against the you know, the
• 6:26
Speaker 5: all the big all the big players and things of
• 6:28
Speaker 5: that nature. But I'm not saying I don't want to
• 6:30
Speaker 5: go out and you would know this for sure. Is
• 6:32
Speaker 5: this at least one of the first times that a
• 6:35
Speaker 5: distributor so to speak, and that's not even distributors.
• 6:38
Speaker 4: What's really interesting services I guess they were. They were
• 6:41
Speaker 4: these PBMs were created as a middleman. And you know,
• 6:46
Speaker 4: they're all now significantly bigger than the pharmaceutical companies that
• 6:49
Speaker 4: they helped sell drugs for. They're bigger than the pharmacies
• 6:52
Speaker 4: that actually created them. Right, So CVS Care Mark, their
• 6:57
Speaker 4: PBM is bigger than CVS. And the reason is is
• 7:01
Speaker 4: because our healthcare system, for a myriad of reasons, when
• 7:04
Speaker 4: we don't have time to talk about this today. But
• 7:06
Speaker 4: it's so complicated that they sort of were the ones
• 7:08
Speaker 4: that figured out how to do the paperwork right, right,
• 7:10
Speaker 4: And this is maybe twenty five thirty years ago that
• 7:12
Speaker 4: this really came in to being. And you know, when
• 7:19
Speaker 4: we sued the manufacturers, they said, well, we didn't know
• 7:21
Speaker 4: who was taking them, right, all we did was make
• 7:23
Speaker 4: the pills. Somebody else gave them to So that was
• 7:24
Speaker 4: their defense. And then the pharmacy said, well, we were
• 7:27
Speaker 4: just fulfilling the prescriptions. The people in the middle who
• 7:31
Speaker 4: were really bridging that gap were these pharmacy benefit managers,
• 7:34
Speaker 4: and so there's an argument to be made that they're
• 7:36
Speaker 4: more culpable than anybody.
• 7:38
Speaker 5: What was it that led your office to look at
• 7:42
Speaker 5: them specifically? A lot of.
• 7:45
Speaker 4: Things, but not the least of which was you know,
• 7:48
Speaker 4: I spent eight years in the state Auditor's office, which
• 7:50
Speaker 4: gave me very very unique insights into a lot of
• 7:55
Speaker 4: things that the state spends money on, not a lot
• 7:57
Speaker 4: of things, actually all the things that the state spends
• 7:59
Speaker 4: money on. And then also, you know, just in the
• 8:02
Speaker 4: in the wake of the election and preparing to take over,
• 8:06
Speaker 4: you know, we we we spent a lot of time
• 8:08
Speaker 4: meeting with lawyers all around the country, asking, you know,
• 8:12
Speaker 4: what are the what are the things that I should
• 8:14
Speaker 4: be looking at, what are the what are the emerging
• 8:16
Speaker 4: trends in some of these sort of large scale consumer complaints,
• 8:20
Speaker 4: And this one kept coming up over and over and
• 8:23
Speaker 4: over again. These PBMs, especially in a place like West Virginia,
• 8:26
Speaker 4: really caused a lot of harm in the opioid crisis.
• 8:29
Speaker 4: And when we started looking into it, it was pretty
• 8:31
Speaker 4: obvious that this was that the state of West Virginia
• 8:34
Speaker 4: needs to hold these people accountable for what they did
• 8:36
Speaker 4: to our our families and to the sort of hopefulness
• 8:39
Speaker 4: that West Virginian's uh used to enjoy before the the
• 8:43
Speaker 4: enormous opioid crisis sort of took over our persona.
• 8:46
Speaker 5: And look, you know, we all know what a crisis
• 8:50
Speaker 5: that it that it was, but if we can rewind
• 8:52
Speaker 5: back to what the mid nineties, is this when we
• 8:55
  Speaker 5: first started.
• 8:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say that that's probably that would be
• 8:58
  Speaker 4: a good estimate.
• 8:58
Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know it was the way that it's
• 9:02
Speaker 5: been very well documented. I know there was that particular
• 9:06
Speaker 5: series that Michael Keaton was a part of that I
• 9:08
Speaker 5: thought was very very good.
• 9:09
Speaker 4: The Akuoke, director of Drug Control Policy here in West Virginia,
• 9:13
Speaker 4: is the person that that was basically right.
• 9:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's you know, there was I guess we've
• 9:18
Speaker 5: always had an issue with drugs in our societies since
• 9:20
Speaker 5: the beginning of time, and I feel not to be
• 9:23
Speaker 5: defeatists that we always will. But this was a little
• 9:25
Speaker 5: bit of a different situation because this was something that
• 9:28
Speaker 5: a lot of people, and especially in West Virginia, where
• 9:31
Speaker 5: you have a very labor intensive workforce and we're coal
• 9:34
Speaker 5: miners and we're loggers and we're steel workers and things
• 9:36
Speaker 5: of that nature. You have an injury and you go
• 9:40
Speaker 5: to a physician that you think okay, just like if
• 9:44
Speaker 5: you have a sore throat or a stomach virus or whatever.
• 9:46
Speaker 5: You go and you get whatever you need and you
• 9:48
Speaker 5: go on. This was the first time we'd really seen
• 9:50
Speaker 5: anything that was coming directly from the people that we
• 9:54
Speaker 5: think JB are supposed to help us.
• 9:57
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and if you look back through the documents,
• 9:59
Speaker 4: like from Purdue Pharma, and this is the first time
• 10:01
Speaker 4: that the drug dealer involved was a federally regulated company.
• 10:05
Speaker 4: Right now, I mean, normally is a gay on the corner,
• 10:06
Speaker 4: correct and so the drugs here were coming from a
• 10:09
Speaker 4: place where people thought they were safe, and the companies
• 10:14
Speaker 4: pretty noticeably knew that they were addictive, much more so
• 10:17
  Speaker 4: than the mail.
• 10:18
Speaker 5: To look at the memos, it really.
• 10:20
Speaker 4: Is disgusting it and it makes me physically mad and
• 10:25
Speaker 4: almost shaking when I think back at like, what were
• 10:29
Speaker 4: they when they knew? They didn't pause at all. They
• 10:33
Speaker 4: immediately hit the gas the minute they figured out that
• 10:36
Speaker 4: they could make an enormous amount of money off of
• 10:38
Speaker 4: our suffering specifically, and you read the emails where they
• 10:41
Speaker 4: make fun of us as pillbillies, and they're not just
• 10:43
Speaker 4: killing us, they're making fun of us while they're doing it.
• 10:47
Speaker 4: I mean as a West Virginian or just as a
• 10:50
Speaker 4: human being in general. That kind of callousness is it's
• 10:54
Speaker 4: just so brutal that it's hard to really believe that
• 10:56
Speaker 4: human beings are capable of that. So what happens next
• 11:00
Speaker 4: is next is uh, the company that we've sued is
• 11:04
Speaker 4: is no small endeavor. They will have very very high
• 11:07
Speaker 4: paid and white shoe what do we call them Philadelphia
• 11:11
Speaker 4: lawyers around here that will descend upon the northern district
• 11:14
Speaker 4: of West Virginia or in front of Judge Bailey and
• 11:16
Speaker 4: Wheeling and we're gonna we're gonna beat them down.
• 11:20
Speaker 5: And the timeline are we looking at your name?
• 11:23
Speaker 4: It's hard to really say, but you know, these kind
• 11:25
Speaker 4: of cases take a really long time. And my hope
• 11:27
Speaker 4: is is that Express Scripts will read our complaint, We'll
• 11:30
Speaker 4: get through some discovery and they'll understand that that you know,
• 11:33
Speaker 4: this can go a lot easier if they come to
• 11:35
Speaker 4: the negotiating table and they say, look, we know we
• 11:38
Speaker 4: did wrong. We they are a contractor with the State
• 11:41
Speaker 4: of West Virginia. Express Scripts is currently a vendor with
• 11:44
Speaker 4: the State of West Virginia. And if if they look
• 11:47
Speaker 4: at at our people and and and just you know,
• 11:50
Speaker 4: they'll say, we think we can come up with a
• 11:52
Speaker 4: financial package that is compensating you for what happened, and
• 11:55
Speaker 4: we can avoid a long drawn out, miserable situation that's
• 11:59
Speaker 4: gonna end in them lose pretty badly.
• 12:01
Speaker 5: And you had a great quote that you did on
• 12:04
Speaker 5: the interview when you broke this story on talk Line
• 12:06
Speaker 5: with what Wilson Meadows yesterday. And I don't remember exactly
• 12:09
Speaker 5: word for word, but basically what you were saying. I've
• 12:11
Speaker 5: heard it like ten thousand times since in which is
• 12:13
Speaker 5: the great quote on your part. You basically said, no
• 12:17
Speaker 5: amount of money is going to replace a grieving mother
• 12:20
Speaker 5: with her son, or a son or daughter with their mother.
• 12:24
Speaker 5: No amount of money is really going to replace that,
• 12:27
Speaker 5: no matter what they come up.
• 12:28
Speaker 4: But it's the only metric we can use. Right. I
• 12:30
Speaker 4: cannot bring back the life that that somebody lost, but
• 12:35
Speaker 4: what we can do is hold these folks accountable and
• 12:39
Speaker 4: the only way that our legal system allows us to
• 12:41
Speaker 4: and that is to extract enough money from them that
• 12:44
Speaker 4: we can start to heal going forward, meaning what resources
• 12:49
Speaker 4: do we need to make sure that this is the
• 12:50
Speaker 4: last generation of people that this crisis affects. And I
• 12:53
Speaker 4: think that needs to be everyone's number one goal is
• 12:56
Speaker 4: if we're still talking about this opioid crisis in twenty years,
• 13:00
Speaker 4: help us Because we got a billion dollars in a
• 13:01
Speaker 4: fund to help us do this, and these cases that
• 13:04
Speaker 4: we're filing are going to go a long way, I
• 13:05
Speaker 4: think to help it as well.
• 13:06
Speaker 5: So we had a text here somebody asked about going
• 13:09
Speaker 5: after doctors and I mean, this has been done, not necessarily,
• 13:13
Speaker 5: but you know, you've only been Attorney General for a
• 13:14
Speaker 5: short time, But I mean I can go back twenty
• 13:17
Speaker 5: twenty five years, thirty years ago, maybe twenty five when
• 13:20
Speaker 5: doctors were being used. Look, I'm from southern West Virginia, Okay,
• 13:23
Speaker 5: and we had places down there in the late nineties,
• 13:27
Speaker 5: early two thousands that didn't even attempt to look like
• 13:30
Speaker 5: an actual medical facility. It was cash only, and there
• 13:33
Speaker 5: were lines of cars, and there were lines at five
• 13:36
Speaker 5: point thirty in the morning. There were people down there.
• 13:40
  Speaker 3: But there has.
• 13:40
Speaker 5: Been a great effort in going after physicians in this
• 13:44
  Speaker 5: as well.
• 13:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, and that that's a task of the United
• 13:47
Speaker 4: States Attorney's Office. And so the physicians, when you were
• 13:51
Speaker 4: holding them accountable for this, that is a criminal act.
• 13:54
Speaker 4: And so the United States Attorney here in the Southern District,
• 13:57
Speaker 4: in the Northern District as well, for the last twelve
• 14:00
Speaker 4: or fourteen years or so, have been very very active
• 14:03
Speaker 4: in finding the doctors who contributed to this problem and
• 14:06
Speaker 4: finding them criminally liable for the things that the pain
• 14:10
Speaker 4: that they inflicted on their patients.
• 14:12
Speaker 5: All right, So what else is on your radar? You
• 14:13
Speaker 5: got some of the big things coming up. I mean,
• 14:15
Speaker 5: there's a couple of things that are on the horizon
• 14:17
Speaker 5: maybe you can't discuss yet. You and I had a
• 14:19
Speaker 5: private conversation yesterday. I don't want it, but.
• 14:21
Speaker 4: Very secretive, very cia right, Dave. So we've got a
• 14:25
Speaker 4: big hearing with the NC double A today. We got
• 14:28
Speaker 4: four players that were found ineligible by the NC DOUBLEA
• 14:31
Speaker 4: that were recruited and offered scholarships by our football team.
• 14:35
Speaker 4: I think what you're going to see out of that
• 14:37
Speaker 4: hearing today, and we're an amicus. Our office stepped in
• 14:40
Speaker 4: to support the players on the football team there is
• 14:43
Speaker 4: that the stories of these young men who were denied
• 14:47
Speaker 4: eligibility by the NC double A are amazing, and the
• 14:52
Speaker 4: reasons for their lack of eligibility are scurliest, to say
• 14:56
  Speaker 4: the very least.
• 14:57
Speaker 5: If you like that word, to write that down.
• 15:00
Speaker 4: And I feel very hopeful that we're going to get
• 15:04
Speaker 4: a few of these guys back on the football team
• 15:06
Speaker 4: because they deserve an opportunity to play. And these are
• 15:09
Speaker 4: young men who have kids, and they have financial obligations,
• 15:12
Speaker 4: and some of them miss some time because they had
• 15:16
Speaker 4: to pay back medical bills that the NCAA sent them
• 15:18
Speaker 4: after they transferred. I mean, it's really the kind of
• 15:21
Speaker 4: stuff that when you read it and you're like, you know,
• 15:23
Speaker 4: this is a twenty three year old guys trying to
• 15:25
Speaker 4: finish up schools, trying to do better for his family.
• 15:28
Speaker 4: Probably better to air on the side of letting that
• 15:30
Speaker 4: guy go showcases talents and get in the NFL A
• 15:33
  Speaker 4: lot of.
• 15:33
Speaker 5: News coming out of your office. I appreciate you taking
• 15:35
Speaker 5: time to be here, and we're going to have you
• 15:37

• 15:39

• 15:51

• 15:52
Speaker 5: Quite frank, I don't even listen to the show most
• 15:55
Speaker 5: of the time when I'm doing the show, I don't

Speaker 5: want to listen to it.

• 18:42
Speaker 5: a good friend, rob reeal for good morning Sister Station
• 18:45
Speaker 5: ninety six to one KWS Superstar Country. Yes, sir, hey
• 18:48
  Speaker 5: doing man.
• 18:49
  Speaker 6: I can't complain. Sometimes I still do. But anyway, life's
• 18:52
Speaker 6: been good to me so far. Uh so uh we
• 18:56
Speaker 6: got radio thon, yes coming up. We were just talking
• 19:00
Speaker 6: off the air. It feels as those is kind of
• 19:01
Speaker 6: snuck up on us because it's been such a busy
• 19:03
Speaker 6: summer around here at eleven eleven Virginia Street East. But
• 19:07
Speaker 6: we are going to spend two days atu WVU Medicine
• 19:10
Speaker 6: Children's in Morgantown. Up on top the Hosteler Center on
• 19:13
Speaker 6: the tenth floor. That beautiful view of the stadium that
• 19:16
Speaker 6: seats sixty thousand people. I paint that picture in your
• 19:19
Speaker 6: head so that I can then tell you one hundred
• 19:23
Speaker 6: thousand children served by WVU Medicine Children's in the past
• 19:28
Speaker 6: year one and nearly nearly two times filling that stadium
• 19:34
Speaker 6: with the number of kids that the Radiothon helps each
• 19:38
  Speaker 6: and every year.
• 19:38
Speaker 5: And this is one of those things that we do
• 19:42
Speaker 5: that of course, all of our stations here in the
• 19:43
Speaker 5: building are involved in it, but we have all of
• 19:45
Speaker 5: our stations around the state. I'm involved in this as well.
• 19:48
Speaker 5: And it's again when we say this, it's not just
• 19:50
Speaker 5: a tagline. You know that we're proud to live to
• 19:53
Speaker 5: where a West Virginia based company. Yes, and that means
• 19:57
Speaker 5: something to us. And all you know the state other
• 20:00
Speaker 5: stations do great things, not trying to poo poo on
• 20:03
Speaker 5: them in any way, but this is something that's really
• 20:06
Speaker 5: really near and dear to our heart. And again there's
• 20:08
Speaker 5: a reason why we're doing this for in state. You know,
• 20:12
Speaker 5: for many years we did it with an out of
• 20:14
Speaker 5: state and then we had a great relationship there, but
• 20:17
Speaker 5: now we're doing something to help kids in state.
• 20:20
Speaker 6: There are great things that are happening at that place
• 20:23
Speaker 6: in Minnesota, or that place in Memphis or New York, LA.
• 20:27
Speaker 6: There are lots of wonderful hospitals all around the country.
• 20:30
Speaker 6: Doing amazing things. But the idea that we have a
• 20:33
Speaker 6: world class hospital in our backyard with a level four
• 20:37
Speaker 6: nick Q that's the highest level of medical care for
• 20:39
Speaker 6: newborns and premature infants available. We're talking West Virginia's only
• 20:44
Speaker 6: pediatric card pediatric cardiac surgery program, neurosurgery program for pediatrics.
• 20:51
Speaker 5: It's the best of the best.
• 20:52
Speaker 6: And we have it right here in the Mountain state.
• 20:55
Speaker 5: Indeed, we do talking to Rob Reel Superstar Country ninety
• 20:58
Speaker 5: six one kwus about our radio on. So what's the
• 21:00
  Speaker 5: plan of attack?
• 21:02
Speaker 6: So, actually, there's gonna be a little bit of a
• 21:04
Speaker 6: pregame for me. Mid State Chevrolet, mid State Ford Northside Automotive.
• 21:09
Speaker 6: They are part of our Cares for Kids radiothon. If
• 21:13
Speaker 6: folks buy a new or pre owned vehicle from them
• 21:17
Speaker 6: in the month of August, they're donating one hundred dollars.
• 21:19
Speaker 5: For each of those vehicles.
• 21:21
Speaker 6: So we're gonna stop buy and see them two until
• 21:22
Speaker 6: four tomorrow, kind of a little pregame party, and then
• 21:25
Speaker 6: bright and Early I go on the air five am
• 21:27
Speaker 6: from the Hostetler Center on Thursday morning, and there will
• 21:31
Speaker 6: be stories of healing and hope.
• 21:34
Speaker 3: I know there sometimes.
• 21:36
Speaker 6: People think, oh, these are these are so depressing and sad,
• 21:39
Speaker 6: and there are certainly sad and scary moments. But what
• 21:43
Speaker 6: I want folks to take away from this, what I
• 21:45
Speaker 6: hope everybody will take away from this, is the miracles
• 21:48
Speaker 6: that happen every day, the healing, the hope, the bright,
• 21:52
Speaker 6: healthy kids with whom we'll get to talk over those
• 21:56
Speaker 6: couple of days sharing their stories of what goes on
• 21:59
Speaker 6: at Believe You Medicine Children.
• 22:01
Speaker 5: And again, it's a very good point that you bring up, Robert,
• 22:03
Speaker 5: because people think, you know, these are all going to
• 22:06
Speaker 5: be doom and gloom time stories, and there are those,
• 22:09
Speaker 5: as you said, but man, there's so much hope that
• 22:13
Speaker 5: comes out of that facility on a daily basis.
• 22:15
Speaker 6: Not every story is going to have a happy ending,
• 22:17
Speaker 6: but we're going to hopefully share as many of the
• 22:20
Speaker 6: ones as we can as we have time that do
• 22:23
Speaker 6: have happy endings. Amy Daly, who is the President and
• 22:26
Speaker 6: CEO of Children's Miracle Network, long before she worked for CMN,
• 22:32
Speaker 6: she was a CMN parent. Her two kids who are
• 22:35
Speaker 6: now knocking on the door of thirty were premies at
• 22:39
Speaker 6: a CMN hospital, and so this kind of comes full
• 22:43
Speaker 6: circle for her. I get to talk with her. I
• 22:44
Speaker 6: think on Thursday is when she's going to be into chat.
• 22:48
Speaker 6: So even the folks who are doing the work come
• 22:52
Speaker 6: by this. It's deep, deeply rooted in their souls.
• 22:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, indeed it is. And so what listeners are going
• 22:59
Speaker 5: to here on the air starting when Thurtursday morning? Yep,
• 23:04
Speaker 5: but you'll get things started, as you said, a lot
• 23:07
Speaker 5: of Yeah I'm on at five Thursday morning, we'll kind
• 23:10
Speaker 5: of ring the bell to start things officially at six.
• 23:12
Speaker 6: That's when guests will start coming in and we'll start
• 23:15
Speaker 6: having more of those of those stories, there's some really
• 23:18
Speaker 6: amazing ones that I've gotten to I mean, I've got
• 23:21
Speaker 6: a pilon notes in front of me now that I
• 23:24
Speaker 6: think you're going to be amazed and astounded and hopefully
• 23:26
Speaker 6: moved to become a superstar miracle maker along with us.
• 23:29
Speaker 5: Give us a I mean, just off the top of
• 23:31
Speaker 5: your head, just even if it's not when you have
• 23:33
Speaker 5: in front of you, give us a couple of stories
• 23:35
Speaker 5: or one. How's that.
• 23:37
  Speaker 2: So?
• 23:39
Speaker 6: I've gone through about twelve over the past couple of days,
• 23:42
Speaker 6: and I think you'll get to hear each of them.
• 23:45
Speaker 6: What struck me was a couple three of them were
• 23:48
Speaker 6: accident stories. So when we think of WVU Medicine Children,
• 23:53
Speaker 6: maybe we think of those premies and we think of
• 23:57
Speaker 6: whether it's kids like Brayson who just that they have
• 24:00
Speaker 6: scoliosis and have to make the trip up and start
• 24:02
Speaker 6: going to clinics there, or kids with heart problems. But
• 24:04
Speaker 6: even Chloe's story about being in an accident and her
• 24:09
Speaker 6: airbag didn't deploy and her face went right into the dashboard,
• 24:14
Speaker 6: And speaking of somebody who's had some reconstructive surgery, they
• 24:18
Speaker 6: did the best they could do. It's the Department of Defense.
• 24:20
Speaker 6: I mean, this is as good. This is actually better
• 24:22
Speaker 6: for those of you who can see my face. This
• 24:24
Speaker 6: is better what I started with. But just being able
• 24:28
Speaker 6: to put a child's life back on track from an
• 24:32
Speaker 6: accident like that, or there are stories of like Jackson
• 24:35
Speaker 6: and Zane who were teetering on the brink as newborns,
• 24:40
Speaker 6: whom you wouldn't know. Sawyer and Mason, a couple of twins.
• 24:44
Speaker 6: They're just regular five year old boys. If you saw
• 24:47
Speaker 6: him out playing pee weee soccer, you would have no
• 24:49
Speaker 6: idea the amount of time they spent in the nick
• 24:52
Speaker 6: you at WVU Medicine Children's I.
• 24:54
Speaker 5: Mean there's so many amazing stories rob that had come
• 24:57
Speaker 5: out of there. We're happy to spotlight those for you.
• 25:00
Speaker 5: And again we'll we'll call on you as we always do,
• 25:02
Speaker 5: and we always say you're the greatest listeners in the world.
• 25:04
Speaker 5: Can come through all of the activities that we do,
• 25:07
Speaker 5: whether it's our sock drops or we just did the
• 25:09
Speaker 5: the Beats backpack attack a couple of weeks ago. You
• 25:13
Speaker 5: folks always come through for us and this is what
• 25:15
Speaker 5: we got and the business community as well.
• 25:16
Speaker 6: Yeah, and you hear it every hour on our stations
• 25:19
Speaker 6: that we're proud to live here too. We're not just
• 25:22
Speaker 6: mouthing it. There are there are some companies that think
• 25:26
Speaker 6: that devoting a PSA, you know, once a week to
• 25:29
Speaker 6: something is contributing to their community. Maybe for them that is.
• 25:34
Speaker 6: But we are roll up our sleeves and get it done.
• 25:36
Speaker 6: I am never surprised but always impressed by the way
• 25:40
Speaker 6: West Virginians come through for West Virginia.
• 25:42
Speaker 5: And we'll be you'll be hearing on the air again.
• 25:44
Speaker 5: This is going to be on all of our stations
• 25:46
Speaker 5: in the building, so you're going to be hearing how
• 25:48
Speaker 5: you can donate. There's always a text available, There's all
• 25:51
Speaker 5: that information. We'll have all that out there in the
• 25:53
Speaker 5: next couple of days.
• 25:54
Speaker 6: Text phone, the text in particular secure whether you are
• 25:58
Speaker 6: PayPal or whatever your particular your app for using money,
• 26:04
Speaker 6: you'll be able to do that safely and securely. There
• 26:07
Speaker 6: is a way to do this no matter how you
• 26:10
  Speaker 6: move your money.
• 26:11
Speaker 5: And look, you can stop by the studio here during
• 26:13
Speaker 5: normal business hours if you want to. We'll put Tracy
• 26:15
Speaker 5: to work out there. So our normal of business hours
• 26:19
Speaker 5: eight to five, we're at eleven eleven, Virginia's Retease in Charleston.
• 26:22
Speaker 5: If you want to stop by a monetary donation, that'll
• 26:24
Speaker 5: be perfectly fine. I mean, it doesn't matter whether it's
• 26:26
Speaker 5: five hundred dollars or it's five dollars, we'll take it.
• 26:28
Speaker 6: And the thing I want to stress most about that
• 26:31
Speaker 6: every single dollar, dime, penny stays here in West Virginia.
• 26:36
Speaker 6: It doesn't pay for me to make the trip up there,
• 26:38
Speaker 6: for me to eat, for me to stay in the hotel.
• 26:40
Speaker 6: There are folks who sponsor that sort of thing so
• 26:42
Speaker 6: that we can do this. Every single penny that you
• 26:47
Speaker 6: bring to the table during our cares for kids Radiothon
• 26:49
Speaker 6: goes to West Virginia kids.
• 26:51
Speaker 5: It's good stuff and we're looking forward to it. And
• 26:54
Speaker 5: unlike last time you did something, you don't have to walk.
• 26:58
Speaker 5: We're actually going to give you a stationed vehicle to
• 27:01
Speaker 5: get it, so you don't have to walk to Morgantown
• 27:04
Speaker 5: like you did last time.
• 27:05
Speaker 6: Yeah, about that in my big mouth. I hope that
• 27:09
Speaker 6: is evidence to folks how emotionally invested I get in
• 27:14
Speaker 6: these sort of things that we get into, these sort
• 27:16
Speaker 6: of things that I kind.
• 27:18
Speaker 5: Of shot my mouth off about.
• 27:21
Speaker 6: If we beat last year, I'll walk the check to
• 27:24
Speaker 6: Morgantown and y'all came through. And I'm nothing if not
• 27:27
Speaker 6: a man of my word, but I will be minding
• 27:31
Speaker 6: my p's and ques a little bit better this time,
• 27:34
Speaker 6: and maybe I won't say anything quite So, what's the
• 27:37
  Speaker 6: word foolhardy?
• 27:38
Speaker 5: Let's go with full foolhardy, as my grandmother used to
• 27:41
Speaker 5: say in that typical you know from Wyoming County dialec
• 27:45
Speaker 5: this yet, don't let your mouth write a check that
• 27:47
Speaker 5: your blank can't cash. And that's basically what you did.
• 27:50
Speaker 5: But you cashed it.
• 27:51
Speaker 6: Yeah, a great, big, comically large check. Or as my
• 27:54
Speaker 6: grandmother would have actually did say to me and her English,
• 27:56
Speaker 6: once you ain't the sharpest taco on the tree.
• 27:59
Speaker 5: Is exactly exactly right. So again we'll get things started.
• 28:02
Speaker 5: You're gonna be up at mid State mid State Chevrolet
• 28:05
Speaker 5: tomorrow and that's a great promotion that they're doing one
• 28:07
Speaker 5: hundred bucks on any every vehicle, every vehicle that they sell.
• 28:11
Speaker 5: And what was the timeframe on I will be there
• 28:13
Speaker 5: noon until not let me check that at is two
• 28:16
Speaker 5: until four tomorrow and the head up to Morgantown for
• 28:19
  Speaker 5: American YEP.
• 28:20
Speaker 6: So a little pregame with Tim and the folks at

Speaker 3: Welcome in to the show.
• 32:22
Speaker 5: West Virginia Secretary of State Chris Warner. Now, all of
• 32:25
Speaker 5: the county clerks and other election officials are gathering for
• 32:28
Speaker 5: their annual conference. And this is something that is done
• 32:32
Speaker 5: every year by code, I believe, with the Secretary of
• 32:34
Speaker 5: State's office. His office will be there, the staff will
• 32:36
Speaker 5: be there, all fifty five county clerks, so their representatives.
• 32:39
Speaker 5: They all gather for trainings and things of that nature.
• 32:43
Speaker 5: But there's a lot in the news as far as
• 32:46
Speaker 5: elections go, and it pertains to President Trump. The President
• 32:52
Speaker 5: has a real issue with mail in ballots and voting machines,
• 32:57
Speaker 5: and the Secretary is concerned about the voting machine aspect.
• 33:02
Speaker 5: He talked about that on this show one day last
• 33:05
Speaker 5: week when they had him on talking about pollworker recruitment,
• 33:08
Speaker 5: and also on Metro News Midday, and he's been on
• 33:10
Speaker 5: talk Line as well, and he's got a concern about
• 33:13
Speaker 5: the President's executive orders, but he says talking about Secretary
• 33:18
Speaker 5: of Warner, that he's not as much concerned about the
• 33:21
Speaker 5: mail in ballots in West Virginia because of the way
• 33:25
Speaker 5: mail in ballots are actually done in West Virginia. There
• 33:29
Speaker 5: is nothing is one hundred percent foolproof, as you know,
• 33:32
Speaker 5: but there's some added steps in West Virginia that the
• 33:35
Speaker 5: other states don't necessarily do. So we're going to talk
• 33:39
Speaker 5: to Secretary Warner about that. Plus, the West Virginia Chamber
• 33:41
Speaker 5: of Commerce is gearing up for their annual Business Summit
• 33:45
Speaker 5: next week at the Greenbrier. We'll talk to Caitlin George
• 33:47
Speaker 5: from the Chamber about that little programming. Note, the talk
• 33:51
Speaker 5: line boys are going to be there, I think, broadcasting
• 33:54
Speaker 5: live at least one day at the business summit next week.
• 33:56
Speaker 5: Wilson and Meadows will be there live, not sending me
• 34:01
Speaker 5: to the Greenbrier. There was an incident a couple of
• 34:03
Speaker 5: years ago, and I can't talk about it. I'm kidding,
• 34:05
Speaker 5: but they're gonna be there, so again, anyway, we're gonna
• 34:09
Speaker 5: talk to Kaylin George about that. There was a virtual
• 34:13
Speaker 5: hearing held last night and there's a lot of talk,
• 34:17
Speaker 5: of course about data centers and things of that nature.
• 34:19
Speaker 5: This virtual hearing was about one that's proposed for Mingo County,
• 34:23
Speaker 5: and we're going to talk about that. It's also another
• 34:27
Speaker 5: one of these data centers that's being proposed for Putnam County,
• 34:29
Speaker 5: and so we're going to get into that story. Jeff

• 34:43
Speaker 5: And I did a little digging on this yesterday. I
• 34:45
Speaker 5: talked to some folks. Thank you to former Legislator Rick
• 34:48
Speaker 5: Stayton who was able to help me kind of put
• 34:49
Speaker 5: this thing together. Tomorrow, there's going to be a town
• 34:52
Speaker 5: hall put on by some local Democrats. The event is
• 34:57
Speaker 5: Sunday and it starts at two o'clock at the Woman's
• 35:00
Speaker 5: Club of Charleston. That's sixteen hundred Virginia Street East. And
• 35:03
Speaker 5: we're going to talk to a couple of the organizers
• 35:06
Speaker 5: about that particular event. And you know, there's been a
• 35:09
Speaker 5: lot in the news about town halls here as of
• 35:13
Speaker 5: late and if you look around the country, Now, this
• 35:15
Speaker 5: is an event, we're not expecting any problems that, but
• 35:18
Speaker 5: you look at some of the town halls that have
• 35:19
Speaker 5: been held across the country with good reason there. I
• 35:25
Speaker 5: completely get why some of our elected officials I've called
• 35:29
Speaker 5: them in the task a couple of times, but but
• 35:33
Speaker 5: I'm gonna be honest with you, the way that a
• 35:34
Speaker 5: lot of these town halls are held, it becomes a
• 35:37
Speaker 5: safety issue. Well, this is not that kind of event. Okay,
• 35:41
Speaker 5: they are inviting other pretty much all elected officials to
• 35:45
Speaker 5: be there. I don't know who's going to show up,
• 35:47
Speaker 5: but the event is this Sunday at the Women's Club
• 35:49
Speaker 5: in Charles. We'll talk to the organizers about that. Plus
• 35:51
Speaker 5: your good friend Millie Snyder is going to be stopping
• 35:53
Speaker 5: by as well. Also just added to the show, there's
• 35:57
Speaker 5: an event happening this Saturday and it's called bumper Fest.
• 36:03
Speaker 5: And I was able to talk to a lovely lady
• 36:07
  Speaker 5: but a name a two D Taylor a little bit
• 36:09
Speaker 5: before the show this morning, and they're having a bit
• 36:12
Speaker 5: of a fundraiser. We're to get into all of that,
• 36:15
Speaker 5: but there's going to be some WVU legends held at
• 36:18
Speaker 5: this particular event. Meg Bulger is going to be there,
• 36:20
Speaker 5: Major Harris and they're working on a couple of others.
• 36:23
Speaker 5: So well we'll get into that event coming up on

• 37:20
Speaker 5: to that. Marshall coaches, Tony Gibson, Corney Jackson, Juliet Folks
• 37:25
Speaker 5: and others will be there. The new athletic director, Gerald
• 37:28
Speaker 5: Harrison's going to be there as well. I have not
• 37:29
Speaker 5: get a chance to meet mister Harrison, but I'm gonna
• 37:31
Speaker 5: tell you what after that press conference he had when
• 37:33
Speaker 5: he was hired a couple of weeks ago, he had
• 37:35
Speaker 5: me ready to run through a wall. I mean, this
• 37:38
  Speaker 5: guy's a fiery guy. He's going to be there. He's
• 37:41
Speaker 5: i think officially went on the job this past weekend
• 37:44
Speaker 5: once the ink was drying, the contract and everything, so
• 37:46
Speaker 5: he's going to be there as well. The voice of
• 37:48
Speaker 5: the Thundering and Heard Steve Cotton will be there as
• 37:51
Speaker 5: well as we paint the Capital City green Thursday night.
• 37:53
Speaker 5: It's always a lot of fun. I enjoy being the
• 37:57
Speaker 5: MC of this thing I've done along with Steve. Animal
• 38:00
Speaker 5: from the Mountain the last couple of years. Animals not
• 38:03
Speaker 5: gonna be able to be there this year because the
• 38:05
Speaker 5: Mountain has a live broadcast that night from Fife Street
• 38:07
Speaker 5: Brewery on Summer Street here in Charleston, so he'll be
• 38:10
Speaker 5: down there for that. I'll be doing this solo, looking
• 38:12
Speaker 5: forward to it shockly from the Mountain. Will be there
• 38:15
Speaker 5: as well, so we hope that you can join us.
• 38:16
Speaker 5: There are limited, limited amount of tickets available. As I
• 38:20
Speaker 5: said on yesterday's show when we were talking to Steve Cotton,
• 38:23
Speaker 5: you show up at six o'clock up at the airport,
• 38:25
Speaker 5: you're probably not going to get in. So what you
• 38:27
Speaker 5: need to do is just look up the Big Green.
• 38:30
Speaker 5: I think it's Marshall dot Edu slash Big Green. You
• 38:32
Speaker 5: can get tickets there because they are going quickly. This

Speaker 5: thing sells out every year. My good friend Chef Paul

Speaker 5: what about that announcement yesterday that former Charleston mayor Danny
• 39:39
Speaker 5: Jones regular on the show. I try to have him
• 39:41
Speaker 5: on every Monday. He made the announcement on the show yesterday.
• 39:46
Speaker 5: He's opening or should I say reopening Danny's barbecue stand
• 39:51
Speaker 5: on Courier Now. He's actually turning over the keys to
• 39:54
Speaker 5: the restaurant to a guy from Beckley by the name
• 39:56
Speaker 5: of Benjamin nol BJ as he's known successful restauranteur in
• 40:01
Speaker 5: the Beckley area, going to make his first, as far
• 40:04
Speaker 5: as I know, his first ventures into Charleston. Danny says
• 40:09
Speaker 5: he's going to be there every day and he's going
• 40:12
Speaker 5: to be teaching bj the secrets of his famous barbecue,
• 40:15
Speaker 5: the ribs, the sides, everything else. And I'm going to
• 40:17
Speaker 5: be honest, as I said on the show yesterday, the
• 40:20
Speaker 5: sides are just as good as the barbecue in my opinion.
• 40:23
Speaker 5: And don't sleep when he has it on that smoked
• 40:25
Speaker 5: chicken soup, the chicken noodles. The smoked chicken noodles was
• 40:28
Speaker 5: absolutely fantastic. It's set to open toward the end of
• 40:32
Speaker 5: the week, the first week of September, that's Labor Day week,
• 40:35
Speaker 5: and I for one am looking forward to it. Fox Shield,
• 40:41
Speaker 5: Tex says day there was an amazing moment in Morgantown
• 40:44
Speaker 5: back on Saturday. A member of the Mouth Her football
• 40:46
Speaker 5: team after practice was back on Saturday, co head strength
• 40:49
Speaker 5: coach Parker Whiteman fulfilled the request of a player of
• 40:52
Speaker 5: the Mouth And football team by performing his baptism with
• 40:56
Speaker 5: his team there with him. Parents beside yourself. These are
• 40:59
Speaker 5: the young man you want your children to look up
• 41:01
Speaker 5: to for leadership and guidance. You heard me talk about
• 41:06
Speaker 5: this a little bit on the show yesterday. But Mayor
• 41:10
Speaker 5: good One told me this a couple of years ago,
• 41:13
Speaker 5: and I believe her now. The mayor on this program said,
• 41:20
Speaker 5: people get fired up about potholes or snow removal, or
• 41:26
Speaker 5: homeless issues, infrastructure, etc. Etc. But the things that get
• 41:32
Speaker 5: people fired up with the most. And this is not
• 41:34
Speaker 5: exclusive to Charleston. It happens everywhere. Trick or treat and
• 41:39
Speaker 5: Christmas parades. Remember all the controversy over the Christmas parade,
• 41:43
Speaker 5: and there's people The Christmas Parade used to be held
• 41:46
Speaker 5: in Charleston on Saturday afternoon. They moved it to Thursday nights.
• 41:49
Speaker 5: People got all upset about that. Well, apparently the big
• 41:54
Speaker 5: outrage Danny and I talked about this a little bit yesterday,
• 41:57
Speaker 5: the big outrage over the last couple of days in
• 41:59
Speaker 5: kna Ac count The county has made the decision to
• 42:03
Speaker 5: do their trick or treating on Thursday, October thirtieth instead
• 42:07
Speaker 5: of Friday the thirty first, which is actually Halloween night.
• 42:12
Speaker 5: And they did so from what I have read, as
• 42:14
Speaker 5: to not compete with high school football, and people have
• 42:19
Speaker 5: lost their collective minds over this. I am serious about this.
• 42:26
Speaker 5: This is what we have to worry about, I guess.
• 42:29
Speaker 5: And as I pointed out yesterday on Midday, there is
• 42:34
Speaker 5: no trick or treat police, parents, grandparents. Your kids can
• 42:38
Speaker 5: trick or treat anytime they want. They can trick or
• 42:40
Speaker 5: treat in April. They can go on Christmas Eve if
• 42:43
Speaker 5: they want to. It doesn't matter. So if you want
• 42:46
Speaker 5: to send your kids out on Halloween nights, sent thement
• 42:48
Speaker 5: on Halloween night, do whatever you want it just I
• 42:51
Speaker 5: guess it kind of makes me scratch my head sometimes.
• 42:56
Speaker 5: And you know what else makes me scratch my head
• 42:59
Speaker 5: from time the time. I was reading last night on
• 43:04
Speaker 5: one local community here in the area and how they
• 43:08
  Speaker 5: planned to handle.
• 43:10
Speaker 3: Traffic flow when school starts.
• 43:12
Speaker 5: And it's already started, of course here in Kanawa County,
• 43:14
Speaker 5: but this was in Putnham County, which I think school
• 43:17
Speaker 5: starts in Putnam County on Thursday. I think, and I

• 47:52
Speaker 5: is continuing, and I had some conversations earlier in the

Speaker 5: day with County Commissioned President Bensolango, and I think we're

Speaker 5: going to try to have he and Joie Garon of

Speaker 5: The Dirty Birds on the show on Thursday to talk
• 48:02
Speaker 5: about Selango light the night. Uh, Texas Thursday nights or
• 48:08
Speaker 5: middle school football nights. Well, every night is something, you know,
• 48:11
Speaker 5: it's Thursday night is middle school night, Friday night is
• 48:15
Speaker 5: high school night. Then they said, well, we don't want
• 48:17
Speaker 5: to do it trick or treating. I'm talking about on
• 48:19
Speaker 5: Saturday night because the people are out partying or whatever.
• 48:21
Speaker 5: Don't want to do it on Sunday night because that's
• 48:23
Speaker 5: a that's a church night. Wednesday night is it also
• 48:26
Speaker 5: a church night? So that leaves Monday and Tuesday.
• 48:29
Speaker 3: And again that's not.
• 48:30
Speaker 5: Gonna make some people happy either. You can't make everybody happy.
• 48:34
  Speaker 3: Texas Day.
• 48:35
Speaker 5: They don't want the football stands to be empty. That's
• 48:37
Speaker 5: the reason for the dumb decision to have trick or
• 48:39
Speaker 5: treating on Thursday while Halloween is on a Friday. This
• 48:42
Speaker 5: isn't Texas. High school football comes after trick or treating,
• 48:46
Speaker 5: it says a Texter. Tex says let's all send the
• 48:50
Speaker 5: kids to Dave Allen's house on Christmas Eve to trick
• 48:53
Speaker 5: or treat. Well, we don't allow kids in our neighborhood,
• 48:55
Speaker 5: so so that that won't happen. Not not an issue
• 48:58
Speaker 5: in my neighborhood, Texas. Dave as a former school administrator,
• 49:02
Speaker 5: you can talk until you're blue in the face. Nothing
• 49:04
Speaker 5: ever stred up parents like changing the Halloween parties, time day,
• 49:08
Speaker 5: costume restrictions or root of a parade. It's you are right,
• 49:14
Speaker 5: You're right. A situation happened last night. We had a
• 49:18
Speaker 5: car crash through a building on the west side here
• 49:21
Speaker 5: in Charleston. I'm told that the driver crashed through a
• 49:23
Speaker 5: window and then fled the scene. Now that information actually
• 49:26
Speaker 5: didn't come from police. That info actually came from a
• 49:28
Speaker 5: coworker of ours here at eleven eleven who drove by it.
• 49:32

Speaker 5: Well, then I should get a check for not having

Speaker 5: kids because my tax dollars are going and I don't
