- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So I want to talk to you about a little thing that I'm working
- 0:35on, a little project that I'm working on.
- 0:37So I write children's books and haven't done one in a while
- 0:42because sometimes they're complicated to find the right
- 0:47person to draw them and whatnot. And, you know, it's, you have to
- 0:52have a symbiotic relationship with somebody when you're doing
- 0:55it. So over the years I've had, you
- 0:58know, I've written four children's books and I've had
- 1:02different people work on them with me.
- 1:04And recently I decided I was going to do a reboot on some of
- 1:09my books. And I started a quest to look
- 1:12for an artist. And I was looking for a
- 1:16particular style and watercolorish.
- 1:20Now I watercolor, but I don't really cartoon children's book.
- 1:24I wanted cartoons. And I'm looking and I'm looking
- 1:27following people on Instagram trying to find somebody.
- 1:30And then I decided to go to a place called Fiver.
- 1:33Now, if you've never heard of Fiver, this is a place where
- 1:36artists can put themselves up from all over the world and make
- 1:40themselves available. And I've had clients use it.
- 1:44I've used it for translating my very first book and I found
- 1:49somebody in Venezuela that could put it into English, from
- 1:53English into Spanish. And he was a reporter.
- 1:56So it was proper. It wasn't just like, you know,
- 1:58auto generated Spanish where it sounds wonky.
- 2:01But, and I've always had great luck with it.
- 2:03But I, I had not thought about doing it for the artist because
- 2:07I said, oh, it's going to be challenging because I want to
- 2:10make sure I can speak their language so that I can have it
- 2:15be, you know, a good match to what I'm looking for.
- 2:19So I had kind of been not shying away from it, but not seeking it
- 2:23out, if you know what I mean. And it was, it was a story I was
- 2:28telling myself. So I decided after a couple
- 2:31months of looking, I was just like, yeah, I'm, I'm not excited
- 2:34about anybody. So I popped over to Fiverr.
- 2:37And for those of you who are wondering what it is, it's
- 2:39spelled fiverr.com, Fiverr. So it's just like A5 with an
- 2:45extra R at the end, 2 Rs at the end and.com.
- 2:51Anyway, so it's fiverr.com and you can find anybody that does
- 2:58anything on there, but not my point.
- 3:00It's not a, this is not a pitch for fiver.
- 3:02This is a different story. So I go on and I start searching
- 3:06and I find a bunch of different people that have kind of one of
- 3:12them had a really tight look to what I wanted and four of them
- 3:15had pretty close look. So I message everybody and I
- 3:18wait to see who gets back to me. And immediately the girl that I
- 3:22thought had this amazing artwork gets back to me like almost
- 3:26instantaneously. And she is in Sri Lanka, so
- 3:31opposite time zones, what not, But she's answering me and she's
- 3:34so sweet. And I look at all the other
- 3:37books that she's done and she's fabulous.
- 3:40And I'm like, oh, did I just find something?
- 3:43Did I just stumble into something?
- 3:44And I've been waiting all this time and here I could have found
- 3:47it right here. But I realize I have the story
- 3:50I'm telling myself about. I wonder how well she
- 3:53communicates because is English her first language?
- 3:56Probably not. And I'm totally open to working
- 4:00with someone that doesn't have English as a first language.
- 4:02But I realized that this is a challenging thing because we're
- 4:05working on art and we have to really be able to get nuances.
- 4:09So I didn't think to myself how much I had been telling myself
- 4:14the story about how difficult this could be.
- 4:16So I sent her a message and beyond when she says hello, I
- 4:21said, you're available. And then she start, she and I
- 4:24start writing back and she's amazing at communicating with me
- 4:30and she's showing me examples. And I said, why don't we try it?
- 4:35Now this is me telling you this because so important is to jump
- 4:39in. So I said, you know what?
- 4:41I'm not going to be afraid to try this.
- 4:43I'm just going to say to her, let's see if we can nail down a
- 4:46look. This is what I'm looking for.
- 4:48So I sent her over some pictures of my chickens and I said, I'd
- 4:53love to be able to have them animated looking.
- 4:56How would that come back? What would that look like like
- 4:58if you were trying to show them as happy as sad?
- 5:01And three days later, she sends me back these drawings.
- 5:06And they're incredible. They're incredible.
- 5:09I actually cried when I saw them because it was like they came
- 5:12right out of my head onto the paper.
- 5:15And just last night, which is why this is the podcast about
- 5:19this. This morning she sent me over
- 5:22the final drawings for the first reboot on one of these books and
- 5:27I was just in tears because we nailed it.
- 5:31We nailed it so amazingly and she is phenomenal.
- 5:36Now, what's the point of all of this and what's the point of me
- 5:38telling you the story? I was letting my story get in
- 5:42the way of reaching out to find my new artist.
- 5:46And believe me, she and I are going to do a ton of projects
- 5:48together because she's incredibly talented and she's so
- 5:54well spoken and she's so on time.
- 5:57She she says she wasn't going to finish until the, I think the
- 6:01end of August, August 31st. And she's already finished.
- 6:05She has a great attitude. She doesn't mind if you give her
- 6:09tweaks. It couldn't have gone better.
- 6:13And the point is sometimes we make up stories in our head and
- 6:17those stories hold us back. And I had a story, but it was a
- 6:20quiet story, my friends. That's what I'm trying to tell
- 6:23you. It wasn't something that I
- 6:24really was like, oh, yeah, I'm totally against that because
- 6:27sometimes their stories are loud and we hear them.
- 6:29But this was not a loud story. This was a quiet story.
- 6:32So I'm telling you to share with you.
- 6:35Listen to those quiet stories because they influence and it
- 6:38took about three months of my time and stole it because I
- 6:41didn't recognize it. I let it sit there for quite
- 6:45some time. So go find out what those quiet
- 6:47stories are you're telling yourself and stop it because
- 6:50it's holding you back. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:52you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 6:54Bye.
