- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21You guys, this is the third time, the third time that I have
- 0:25recorded this friggin episode. Oh my God.
- 0:28OK. The first time I don't even
- 0:30remember what happened anyways. And then I got into the second
- 0:34time, finished the entire episode, like went to a meeting,
- 0:38recorded the deep dive like I've done so much.
- 0:41And then I went back to the episode and I realized that my
- 0:45Rd. settings for like our microphone were wrong because we
- 0:49took all of our equipment to the binge offices yesterday here in
- 0:53Sydney to do an interview with some of the Real Housewives,
- 0:56which is very exciting. But their sound person in their
- 0:59studio space, which was really cool.
- 1:01It was really cool to get set up there, but he changed the
- 1:03settings on the road. And anyways, the whole episode,
- 1:07like there was sound, but it was like in and out.
- 1:09So it's like if I wasn't like speaking directly into
- 1:11microphone, it would like fade out.
- 1:13If I like went like this and it didn't sound natural at all and
- 1:16I was like oh that's going to piss people off so much.
- 1:18So anyways, here I am rerecording again.
- 1:22OK, so we are doing a big Grammys recap today.
- 1:26I was going to add other stories to this episode, but as I was
- 1:29writing the recap, I was like, you know what?
- 1:31Let's just do like a mini Grammys recap.
- 1:33And then any other stories that I had, I think I only had one
- 1:36will go Thursday. Yesterday was the 2025 Grammys.
- 1:40Obviously, I have a lot to cover.
- 1:42Overall, I'd say that the award show felt really culturally
- 1:45relevant in a way that it hasn't in years.
- 1:48I feel like they really tried to take into account like, what's
- 1:51happening online, like discussions in fan communities,
- 1:55what happens behind the scenes with artists, what's happening
- 1:58around the world politically and socially.
- 2:01And this did seem to be like the general consensus.
- 2:04So Justin Crudo wrote for Vulture quote, who are these
- 2:08people and what have they done with the Recording Academy?
- 2:11It definitely wasn't a perfect show, but we'll give credit
- 2:14where it's due. And the Academy deserves a lot
- 2:17After tonight. I'm going to go over some of the
- 2:19highlights before I get into more serious elements of the
- 2:23show. So there were performances from
- 2:26all of the main pop girlies that dominated 2024, like Chapel
- 2:31Roan, Charli XCX, Billy Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter.
- 2:35They all killed it as we knew they would.
- 2:38And of course, the Taylor Swift is like dancing and partying to
- 2:43every single performance. And many of them, she's the only
- 2:47one. Like the audience is filled with
- 2:49people who are just seated and watching the show.
- 2:52And she's like standing up like champagne in her hand, like
- 2:55going crazy, dancing, singing. And I love it.
- 2:59Like, I love that she is showing that support.
- 3:02I know a lot of people think it's just her trying to like be
- 3:04the center of attention and get the cameras to film her and
- 3:07stuff. And like, sure, it could be
- 3:09that, I don't know. But I think it doesn't really
- 3:11matter at the end of the day. The audience for so many of the
- 3:15performances literally does nothing.
- 3:17So I love to see that energy, that fangirl energy from Taylor.
- 3:21Some of the most notable wins. OK, let's get into this.
- 3:24Kendrick Lamar won all 5 Grammys.
- 3:27He was nominated for for Not Like Us.
- 3:30He won record of the year, song of the year, best rap
- 3:33performance, best rap song and best music video.
- 3:38You guys, this is crazy because we know that this song is a diss
- 3:42track on Drake. That's why I'm saying it feels
- 3:45like the Academy really just like let loose and like decided,
- 3:48you know what we're going to like lean in to like what is
- 3:50going on behind the scenes in fan communities online.
- 3:55Like they considered, it feels like they considered a lot of
- 3:58that in these awards. One of the key lyrics in this
- 4:02song is trying to strike a chord, and it's probably A
- 4:05minor, like A minor, if you know the Drake lore, you know, So
- 4:12everyone's like, first of all, someone check on Drake, and
- 4:15second of all, someone checked Drake into a psychiatric
- 4:18hospital after this because this is so embarrassing.
- 4:24I don't even think Drake nominated himself or whatever.
- 4:27You have to like, submit yourself to be nominated for the
- 4:29Grammys. And I read somewhere that he did
- 4:31not do that. OK Chapel, my queen, she won
- 4:34best new artist. And in her acceptance speech,
- 4:37she spoke about fair pay for emerging artists.
- 4:41Now, I'm not well versed in, like, the insurance and outs of
- 4:44the music industry, but we all know that record labels are
- 4:47notoriously pretty predatory. And I guess it's really hard for
- 4:51up and coming artists to like, survive, you know, and they seem
- 4:56quite trapped in a lot of these contracts and things like that.
- 4:58Like, we know just from like, peripherally we have heard
- 5:01things like this. So Chapel really spoke out about
- 5:03that for everything she went through last year.
- 5:06I really love that Chapel hasn't let like, the Internet scrutiny,
- 5:11the media scrutiny, all of the like, fodder around her and her
- 5:16speaking up. Like, I'm glad she hasn't let
- 5:18any of that stop her from voicing things like this.
- 5:21I love that she's an artist that stands for something bigger.
- 5:25I hope that this continues. And I think even if the way
- 5:29she's delivering the message doesn't feel super palatable to
- 5:32you, the fact that she does have this bigger message to her
- 5:37celebrity, I feel like it's so important and it's inspiring.
- 5:41I just love Chapel. OK Beyoncé.
- 5:45She became the first black woman to win a Grammy for country
- 5:49music for Cowboy Carter since The Pointer Sisters won in 1975,
- 5:55and Taylor Swift presented the award to her.
- 5:58Some people said that they seemed awkward in this exchange.
- 6:02I don't know. I didn't really notice that.
- 6:04What I could not stop, like being obsessed with was
- 6:07Beyoncé's reaction to winning this.
- 6:10She seemed so genuinely shocked and excited.
- 6:14And I feel like it was a moment that we don't get to see a lot
- 6:17from Beyoncé because she's so polished, right?
- 6:20She's so polished in public. So to see her have this, really,
- 6:24I don't know, it was like really sincere.
- 6:25It was almost like childlike in such like a cute, sincere,
- 6:29excitable way to see that reaction.
- 6:32I just loved that. And of course, she also won
- 6:35album of the year, which is the first time she has ever won
- 6:38that. So that kind of leads into the
- 6:40more negative stuff. I wanted to start out by calling
- 6:43out the blatant racism in some of the reactions to Beyoncé.
- 6:47He's win, especially her win in the country category.
- 6:51Now this is always a problem for Beyoncé.
- 6:53Like she is always compared. Her success is always compared.
- 6:57She's always called overrated and things in that similar vein.
- 7:01And now with Cowboy Carter winning in the country category,
- 7:05like the judgement, it's real. Look, there's always going to be
- 7:09heated opinions about any. I mean, I was going to say album
- 7:12of the year, but like any category, right, Like music is
- 7:15subjective. It can be based on opinion.
- 7:19However, I think while that type of like judgment or opinion
- 7:23isn't exclusive to Beyoncé, I think the undertones of what
- 7:27people were saying and like the blatant, like ignorance, like
- 7:31the, it's felt like intentional ignorance that feels exclusive
- 7:35to Beyoncé and that feels quite targeted.
- 7:37I think a lot of people are missing context and I think
- 7:41that's on purpose, which is why it does feel like racism to me.
- 7:44So there's a lot of people saying that Beyoncé shouldn't
- 7:47have won in the country category because it's her first country
- 7:50album. A lot of the songs on the album
- 7:52don't necessarily fit quote UN quote into that like country
- 7:55genre. She's not immersed in that
- 7:57genre. She hasn't been like, slogging
- 8:00it out in that genre like whatever country music is
- 8:04directly derived from black Southern Americans.
- 8:09This is a quote from the Harvard Crimson quote.
- 8:11Early country music was often rebranded or stolen from the
- 8:15hymns and field songs of Southern enslaved people, as
- 8:18well as from professional black musicians.
- 8:21And while people might not have always known that part of what
- 8:26Cowboy Carter did culturally for us was it opened up that
- 8:30conversation about country music and its history, its origins
- 8:35within black culture. And so that to me, is also why I
- 8:40think Cowboy Carter was a perfect winner for Album of the
- 8:43Year, right? Like, I think Album of the Year
- 8:46should hold cultural significance.
- 8:48And it obviously held significance for Beyoncé.
- 8:51We know that it was kind of like her first entrance back into the
- 8:55country sphere since 2016. In 2016, she performed with the
- 9:00Dixie Chicks at the Cmas, and she received tons of racist
- 9:04backlash for that performance. And she said Cowboy Carter was
- 9:08kind of like her saying kind of like fuck you or to everyone who
- 9:12said she didn't belong. So this album holds significance
- 9:15to Beyoncé, which I think is important in album of the year
- 9:19because if you think about. So this is just me like going on
- 9:21a tantrum. But if you think about Beyoncé
- 9:24as an artist, right? Like, I think anything that is
- 9:29significant to Beyoncé, he's career, which Cowboy Carter very
- 9:32much is, he's a contender or should be a contender.
- 9:36Then if it's a good album, which obviously it is for something
- 9:39like album of the year, because Beyoncé herself is one of the
- 9:43most culturally impactful, influential artists of our time.
- 9:47So anything that is significant to Beyoncé's career is
- 9:51significant to music in 2025. Like full stop.
- 9:55So I think that is just like 1 little point there.
- 9:58But then I think the other point is that like I said before, this
- 10:02album opened up bigger conversations around the world
- 10:06and open people's eyes to different histories and origins
- 10:11of music and just like things that like honestly, the Grammys
- 10:13should be awarding. So that is why I think Cowboy
- 10:17Carter, whether you liked the album or not, like whether it's
- 10:20your taste in music or not, I think it stood for something
- 10:23bigger and that is why it should have won, which it did.
- 10:27Album of the year and also best country album.
- 10:30OK, OK. Next, The Associated Press was
- 10:34doing red carpet interviews at the Grammys, and interviewers
- 10:37are now facing backlash for interrupting their own interview
- 10:41with Babyface to call over Chapel Roan.
- 10:44So there's two interviewers. One of them, she sees Chapel.
- 10:49She kind of like, makes eyes with her publicist or whoever
- 10:51is, like, on the carpet with Chapel, like, escorting her.
- 10:54And obviously Chapel's going to wait for this interview.
- 10:57And then it looks like they're about to walk away, I guess.
- 10:59And so the interviewer is like, oh, wait, Chapel in the middle
- 11:02of Babyface, like, quite literally giving his answer.
- 11:05Like, they had asked him a question and he is in the middle
- 11:08of answering. And she's like, yells, oh,
- 11:09Chapel, Chapel. Which is just like,
- 11:12unprofessional, right? So the interviewer has issued an
- 11:15apology. She issued it on air first.
- 11:17I wanted to say that I'm really sorry about interrupting
- 11:20Babyface. Earlier, Chapel Roan had come up
- 11:24and there was a lot of commotion, as there is on these
- 11:26carpets. But I'm a big Babyface fan and
- 11:28as are we all. And so I just wanted to say that
- 11:31that I really apologize. But people are like, this
- 11:34interviewer is never being asked to do a red carpet for The
- 11:38Associated Press again. OK, The other kind of shitty
- 11:41thing to come out of the Grammys is Chris Brown was unfortunately
- 11:45awarded a Grammy. This is from the same Vulture
- 11:48piece by Justin Trudeau, he said, just months after a
- 11:51documentary explored new allegations of sexual assault
- 11:55and abuse against the singer. He won his first award in over a
- 11:59decade for best R&B album, and Chris Brown has never been fully
- 12:04shunned from the industry. But this is just so
- 12:07disappointing. This shows that, yeah, he is
- 12:11well on his way to like a proper comeback if he is being awarded
- 12:15a Grammy like this. And finally, I wanted to discuss
- 12:18briefly the Kanye West Bianca Sensori red carpet.
- 12:22Look, I'm not going to post the photos on the video, but I did
- 12:26want to say my opinion. I don't think we should be
- 12:29analyzing this. Look, I don't think we should be
- 12:31making jokes, making this into memes.
- 12:35I don't even know if we should be creating think pieces with
- 12:39this. I know there are something
- 12:41pieces that are trying to take more of like an ethical stance.
- 12:46I don't, I don't know how I feel about that really.
- 12:49Maybe if it kind of opens people's eyes to what could be
- 12:53happening. But I think in general it is
- 12:55very clear that something is very wrong in this relationship.
- 12:58I know a lot of people are concerned for Bianca and I think
- 13:01for good reason and all the fodder around it.
- 13:04Like obviously this was for shock value but like was this
- 13:07Bianca's decision? Like what is going on behind the
- 13:10scenes? Is she OK?
- 13:13That should be like the only conversation in my opinion
- 13:16around this situation. Also I know people were like oh
- 13:19they weren't even invited and they crashed.
- 13:21Apparently that's also not true. So I'm going to read a blue sky
- 13:25post from my friend Crystal who runs Z feed and this is kind of
- 13:29like sums up how I feel about it.
- 13:30She wrote, I have no idea what's going on in Bianca's sensory and
- 13:34Ye's relationship, but I reckon any women's publication that a
- 13:38published on the gendered violence epidemic should be very
- 13:41careful about whether slash how they post about Bianca's Grammys
- 13:45red carpet look. And I completely agree.
- 13:48We have seen a lot of publications that publish things
- 13:53that are very pro feminist, pro women's reproductive rights, you
- 13:56know, all of that great stuff that are covering this in kind
- 14:01of I think an inappropriate way and I think we need to think
- 14:04about that. Anyways, guys, hopefully third
- 14:07time's a charm with this. I love you guys.
