- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer Podcast, where we bring you tips and inspiration each day to help you build habits for writing success.

- 0:22SPEAKER_00: In your life as a writer, there are a lot of things that you get to choose.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: You get to choose how and when you write, what kind of material you create, the type of platform you want to build, and so much more.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: But there's one thing that none of us gets to decide, and that is the times in which we live.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Right now we're going through a period of civil unrest, religious conflict, an uncertain economy, political leaders that people don't trust, and a pace of change that's far too fast than most of us are comfortable with.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Now, the funny thing is that you could actually say the same for basically any period of history almost anywhere on earth.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So here's my point.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: It doesn't do a lot of good to spend your time and emotional energy worrying about the things that you can't change.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Instead, focus on setting and achieving your goals, being productive, and adding value to the world through your writing.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: After all, your writing is the only thing that you really have control over.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, you also have control over other areas of your life, but you only have control over those things.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And of course, because this is a writing podcast, I want to emphasize that you only have control over your writing.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: You don't have control over stuff that happens in other areas of the world, or you don't have control over who becomes president, or so many other kinds of things that people get so stressed out over.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: If you've ever seen the Lord of the Rings movies, you probably will remember these lines from the Fellowship of the Ring.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Frodo said to Gandalf, I wish the ring had never come to me.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I wish none of this had happened.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And Gandalf says, So do all who live to see such times.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: But that is not for them to decide.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And wow.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: What a great reminder for all of us.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: We've got to make good use of the time that's given to us by focusing on what we can control.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: How much time and energy do you spend on things you can control versus things that you can't?
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: That's a great question worth asking.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Hey, I want to introduce to you our brand new sponsor here on the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: This is, in fact, the first time that I have mentioned them as a sponsor, and I'm so excited to have them as a sponsor for the show, and that is Plotter.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Plotter is the number one visual book planning software for writers that helps you plan books in the same way that you think.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Plotter's intuitive visual interface allows plotting to be the creative process that it's supposed to be.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Now, the cool thing is that Plotter isn't just for fiction writers.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Plotter is a great tool for nonfiction authors, podcasters, speakers, and anybody creating content to organize their material and story points.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I've been playing around with plotter for a few weeks now, and I can tell you it is an extraordinarily powerful tool, and I'm really, really excited about how it's helping me to craft my very first fiction book.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, you heard it here, folks.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: For the first time on the Day of the Writer podcast, I'm working on my first fiction book.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And plotter, I can already tell you, is going to be a key part of that process.
