Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Toronto Public transit services are anticipating complaints today at a
- 0:04Speaker 1: City Hall meeting, thousands of baseball fans were stranded after
- 0:09Speaker 1: Game seven and that was so frustrating for so many.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Angie Seth is at Toronto City Hall ahead of this
- 0:16Speaker 1: meeting today. Angie, in case, everyone was just their head
- 0:19Speaker 1: was in the games so much and you know, absorbing
- 0:23Speaker 1: and healing from the loss, maybe missed the stories about
- 0:25Speaker 1: the chaos.
- 0:26Speaker 2: What happened.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Well, first of all, hats off to the Jase right,
- 0:31Speaker 3: an incredible series. But yeah, you're looking at forty thousand
- 0:34Speaker 3: fans that were there at Rogers Stadium, you know, trying
- 0:37Speaker 3: to get home now disappointed. And then of course all
- 0:40Speaker 3: the people that were on the street, the traffic concetera,
- 0:42Speaker 3: a number of events happening, you know, on Saturday night as well,
- 0:45Speaker 3: and instead what happened was what they didn't expect. They
- 0:48Speaker 3: were expecting there was going to be more service, extended service,
- 0:50Speaker 3: probably similar to what we saw when Taylor Swift was
- 0:53Speaker 3: here for the Airas tour, but instead, well it was
- 0:55Speaker 3: anything but that.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Take a look at the reaction, you.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Know, for that look, it's not one o'clock and that's
- 1:05Speaker 1: a Lot one, that's pull both.
- 1:08Speaker 4: He then told us there's more trains on it. We
- 1:11Speaker 4: lined up for twenty minutes.
- 1:12Speaker 3: We stood it.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Paul Doug, Paul Doug, get bot do something yet one night? Unbelievable.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Are you the only guys who then watching the ex
- 1:24Speaker 4: rames tonight, like seriously.
- 1:27Speaker 3: You feel for that security officer there, you know, not
- 1:30Speaker 3: really being able to answer those questions. But a lot
- 1:32Speaker 3: of those fans really really you know, upset and concern.
- 1:34Speaker 3: And the TDC, or as you should say, rather the
- 1:36Speaker 3: City of Toronto put this tweet out, you know, before
- 1:38Speaker 3: the game here is saying reminder, we know the game
- 1:41Speaker 3: is running late, but Transit won't. The final go train
- 1:43Speaker 3: leaves Union Station soon and the last TTC train at
- 1:46Speaker 3: around a one thirty am check schedules at gotransit dot
- 1:49Speaker 3: com and TDC dot ca A that certainly didn't sit
- 1:52Speaker 3: well with transit riders one, you know, many of them.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Taking to Reddit, one individual describes his trip home from
- 1:59Speaker 3: down Town to Brampton, saying it took him over three
- 2:02Speaker 3: hours to get home. Hee was stuck on the Gardner
- 2:05Speaker 3: in one of those TGC buses forever, he says. Now
- 2:08Speaker 3: metrolinks responding to the situation as well. We know that
- 2:11Speaker 3: there was track work that was supposed to happen this
- 2:12Speaker 3: weekend they delayed, but they put out this statement saying,
- 2:15Speaker 3: due to track ownership and operational considerations, we cannot operate
- 2:20Speaker 3: overnight or add additional trains past service time. We sincerely
- 2:24Speaker 3: thank our customers for their patients throughout the playoff series,
- 2:27Speaker 3: as we have worked to support everyone traveling to and
- 2:30Speaker 3: from the games. Now. Mandi Blai, CEO of the TGC,
- 2:33Speaker 3: also sort of putting out a statement as well, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 3: in response to all of this, saying that they did
- 2:37Speaker 3: extend subway service hours. They did deploy thirty or more
- 2:41Speaker 3: buses that did run that would run into extra innings,
- 2:44Speaker 3: that was the plan. Instead, things ended at around twelve fifteen,
- 2:48Speaker 3: so ample time for people to be able to get
- 2:50Speaker 3: in and out, and they did say He also does
- 2:53Speaker 3: say that dozens of trains were running until service end,
- 2:56Speaker 3: about ninety minutes after the game ended, of course, saying
- 2:59Speaker 3: that should give enough people ample time to get themselves home. Heather,
- 3:03Speaker 3: But clearly though, there was a lot of chaos and
- 3:06Speaker 3: a lot of frustration on the street and on if
- 3:08Speaker 3: you could get on a bus or a train.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Certainly they were jam packed.
- 3:12Speaker 1: So TTC questions, you said you talked about Metro Links,
- 3:16Speaker 1: that is the go train service.
- 3:18Speaker 2: That was also a big problem.
- 3:20Speaker 1: The meeting that you're there to cover today, Edgie is
- 3:22Speaker 1: not because of the Game seven situation, but that's expected
- 3:25Speaker 1: to be a big focal point now.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So what's likely to happen there.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Well, we know that the mayor, Livia Chow is going
- 3:32Speaker 3: to be here as well as the TCC chair Jamal Mayers,
- 3:35Speaker 3: who's actually in a few minutes now, is going to
- 3:37Speaker 3: give a quick press conference. The media is here to
- 3:39Speaker 3: cover that as Heather, so we'll have that for you.
- 3:42Speaker 3: But that is going to be on the agenda. What
- 3:44Speaker 3: is the plan moving forward? And City councilor Torona City
- 3:47Speaker 3: Council Josh Mattlow raising the concern saying we've got the
- 3:49Speaker 3: World Cup happening next year, so there needs to be
- 3:51Speaker 3: plans put in place. Take a listen to him.
- 3:54Speaker 4: If we don't see the TDC and Metrolinks get their
- 3:57Speaker 4: act together with communications and service standards, it's going to
- 4:01Speaker 4: be embarrassing internationally. So it's time for them to focus
- 4:04Speaker 4: on recognizing that we are a big global city that
- 4:09Speaker 4: needs to act like one.
- 4:12Speaker 3: And so that's not just a matter of the World Cup, Heather,
- 4:15Speaker 3: but other events that happen in the city on the
- 4:17Speaker 3: regular basis. We know that there's two major marathons that
- 4:19Speaker 3: happen in the city every year, one in October and
- 4:22Speaker 3: one in May. And the one that just happened in
- 4:23Speaker 3: October they had upwards of thirty thousand runners. One of
- 4:26Speaker 3: the big criticisms was can we have TTC and Go
- 4:29Speaker 3: Transit operate earlier so runners can get to their race
- 4:33Speaker 3: times to get to the start line via transit rather
- 4:36Speaker 3: than having to drive. And we know those trains don't
- 4:38Speaker 3: operate I believe before eight o'clock, depending on.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Where you are.
- 4:41Speaker 3: So I think this is going to be a bigger
- 4:43Speaker 3: picture meeting as well. How do we prepare for big
- 4:45Speaker 3: events of course like the World Cup and other events
- 4:47Speaker 3: that happened in the city. And as you heard, there
- 4:49Speaker 3: sort of step up our transit plans on a global stage.
- 4:53Speaker 3: So that meeting happening at ten o'clock, we'll be hearing
- 4:55Speaker 3: from the TTC chair Jamal Myers in just a few minutes, Heather,
- 4:59Speaker 3: and we'll the latest updates on that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Sounds good, could get fiery maybe at that meeting, Angie.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Very interesting, it could people be certainly giving their comments.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Based on those comments that we captured on video there.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Thank you, Angie.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Angie Seth from Toronto this morning,
