- 0:19Speaker 1: It's time for the cinema chronicles. Hey, it's me Brandon Vic,
- 0:30Speaker 1: member of the Southeastern Film Critics Association and board member
- 0:34Speaker 1: of the Music City Film Critics Association. Happy to happy
- 0:39Speaker 1: to be here on the day that my buddy Stony
- 0:45Speaker 1: turns forty years old. It has been We've already celebrated,
- 0:53Speaker 1: We've already have danced to Kesha and I even tried
- 0:59Speaker 1: to do the split was that Summit hospital for I
- 1:04Speaker 1: don't know about sixteen hours, but I turned forty as well.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I got a few months. But but I bring this
- 1:15Speaker 1: up not to not to announce our age to everybody,
- 1:18Speaker 1: but for some reason, since I have met my now
- 1:25Speaker 1: wife June and July is just birthday mayhem. I don't
- 1:32Speaker 1: guess I've realized how much is going on when it
- 1:38Speaker 1: comes to birthdays for these two months. But I was thinking.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I was looking at our calendar, and this month we've
- 1:47Speaker 1: had my in law's birthdays, one of my nephew's birthdays,
- 1:53Speaker 1: Stony's birthday. July is another nephew's birthday, my parents' birthday days,
- 2:01Speaker 1: my one of my brother in law's birthdays, and go
- 2:05Speaker 1: ahead and throw in Father's Day in July. Fourth and there.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So it's been pretty knucking futs if you, uh, if
- 2:13Speaker 1: you're in my house on trying to keep up with
- 2:15Speaker 1: everything and everybody. It's fun, I mean, you know, to
- 2:19Speaker 1: celebrate people's birthdays, it's fun. But it's just sometimes it
- 2:24Speaker 1: just doesn't feel like you have enough time in the
- 2:25Speaker 1: day or the week or the month. But but yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: it was a nice little a nice little shin dig
- 2:34Speaker 1: we had for for Stony. So sorry for those that
- 2:39Speaker 1: didn't get invited. I guess, uh it was pretty exclusive,
- 2:45Speaker 1: but uh yeah, I just and I started thinking about
- 2:49Speaker 1: my birthday and what what what do I want to do?
- 2:54Speaker 1: I think we're past the age of having these huge birthdays.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Stony was quite known for how having thirty forty people
- 3:02Speaker 1: for his birthday, so he did it up big. I
- 3:07Speaker 1: had a few people, not as many as that, And
- 3:11Speaker 1: most of the time I think in involved probably go
- 3:13Speaker 1: into a movie or something like that. But these days
- 3:17Speaker 1: we keep the group small, and I really think I've
- 3:20Speaker 1: kind of leaned on maybe just renting a boat, a
- 3:23Speaker 1: pontoon and just going out there for four hours, eight
- 3:28Speaker 1: hours forever, who knows, but we'll see. So anyway, if
- 3:35Speaker 1: anybody knows, anybody that has a free boat. Just email
- 3:39Speaker 1: us maybe I can, you know, always looking for discounts,
- 3:43Speaker 1: trying to raise my family. So but anyway, listen, you're
- 3:47Speaker 1: here to listen about movies, and I've got three. I
- 3:53Speaker 1: got three heavyweights here, and I think let's go ahead,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and let's go ahead and start with you know, the
- 4:05Speaker 1: the Return of the One and Only he Man next
- 4:25Speaker 1: Masters of the Universe. So before we get into this thing,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I feel like I have to be pretty transparent here.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And I didn't really grow up with He Man and
- 4:38Speaker 1: the whole Masters of the Universe thing. I think it was.
- 4:42Speaker 1: It really went from like early eighties to late eighties.
- 4:45Speaker 1: So by the time I'm really like playing with toys
- 4:49Speaker 1: getting into him in the nineties, I'm doing like g
- 4:53Speaker 1: I Joe's and Ninja Turtles and things like that. So
- 4:58Speaker 1: I didn't really grow up with the I do remember
- 5:02Speaker 1: the cartoon a little bit, and I remember seeing like
- 5:08Speaker 1: I felt like they had action figures, but they were
- 5:10Speaker 1: like really small, like really small. Now I do now.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I think most people, if you didn't even know it
- 5:18Speaker 1: was a cartoon or anything else, perhaps you know Masters
- 5:22Speaker 1: of the Universe because of that eighties cult classic that
- 5:24Speaker 1: had the good old Doph Lundron in it that I
- 5:28Speaker 1: have not seen in its entirety, So but here we are.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Twenty twenty six. Masters of the Universe is backed by
- 5:36Speaker 1: popular demand per Rotten Tomatoes and Masters of the Universe
- 5:41Speaker 1: director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the
- 5:44Speaker 1: big screen in this epic live action adventure after being
- 5:48Speaker 1: separated for fifteen years. The Sword of Power leads Prince
- 5:51Speaker 1: Adam played by Nicholas Kalitzin back to Eturna, where he
- 5:56Speaker 1: discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor
- 6:00Speaker 1: voiced I Guess played as well by Jared Leto. To
- 6:03Speaker 1: save his family and his world, Adam must joined forces
- 6:06Speaker 1: with his closest allies Tila played by Kamila Mendez and
- 6:10Speaker 1: Duncan slash man at arms Idris Elbam, and embrace his
- 6:14Speaker 1: true destiny as he man the most powerful man in
- 6:17Speaker 1: the universe. So this is a weird and wild and
- 6:23Speaker 1: vibrant world that's definitely nostalgic to the nth degree, but
- 6:28Speaker 1: it's also a fun and classic adventure movie that really
- 6:31Speaker 1: does play out like this Saturday Morning cartoon come to
- 6:36Speaker 1: life as mentioned before director Travis Knights, his director behind
- 6:41Speaker 1: Bumblebee and Kuba in the Two Strings. He feels like
- 6:46Speaker 1: the right filmmaker to have the power to take on
- 6:50Speaker 1: Masters of the Universe. This is per Geep's Geeks of Color.
- 6:55Speaker 1: They had an interview with him and they ask what
- 6:58Speaker 1: does Masters of the Universe mean to you? And he
- 7:00Speaker 1: says it was a huge part of my childhood. I
- 7:02Speaker 1: distinctly remember when I was first exposed to it, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: it was so different than anything I'd seen before. Every
- 7:08Speaker 1: right thinking person was a Star Wars fan at that time,
- 7:11Speaker 1: so that was my big introduction to sci fi, blending
- 7:14Speaker 1: sci fi and fantasy. Masters of the Universe was that,
- 7:17Speaker 1: but it was kind of weird, psychedelic, strange and playful.
- 7:20Speaker 1: It just felt like it shouldn't exist. It felt like
- 7:22Speaker 1: someone took a bunch of ideas, threw them in a
- 7:25Speaker 1: blender and spewed them ount. I was delighted by all
- 7:28Speaker 1: of it. I had the toys, I read the little
- 7:30Speaker 1: mini comics. When the cartoon came out the next year,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I loved the cartoon. I remember rushing home after school
- 7:36Speaker 1: and watching The He Man, She Raw Power Hour, The
- 7:39Speaker 1: Greatest Kid. Christmas gift I ever received was the Castle
- 7:43Speaker 1: Gray School play set. That was my Red Rider bb gun.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I've been in a steady administrative decline since that was
- 7:51Speaker 1: the peak. Now, I say, for Masters of the univer
- 7:54Speaker 1: almost from the start, it's apparent that Night is well
- 7:57Speaker 1: aware of the properties goofy elements, its campy offbeat with
- 8:02Speaker 1: an abundance of retro nourishment. He had no problem embracing
- 8:06Speaker 1: that in full force. Andy Weyer did an interview with him,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and it says Travis Knight made Masters of the Universe
- 8:15Speaker 1: because he really loves it and he thinks you will too.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And the reason I'm including this is because they ask, so,
- 8:21Speaker 1: how do you make fun of and honor something at
- 8:26Speaker 1: the same time? He says, It's hard to do. It's
- 8:29Speaker 1: definitely a tight rope to walk. I don't like this
- 8:31Speaker 1: trend where these things are looked at ironically looking down
- 8:35Speaker 1: our nose at the story we are telling. I don't
- 8:37Speaker 1: believe in that at all. There's something inherently goofy about
- 8:39Speaker 1: this world in these characters. I don't think that's something
- 8:42Speaker 1: to look down our nose that, but something to wrap
- 8:45Speaker 1: our arms around. But you have to acknowledge it. Yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 1: we know this is silly, but we also love it.
- 8:49Speaker 1: It's not done with a judgment, It's done with affection.
- 8:54Speaker 1: A little bit later in that same interview, says, we
- 8:56Speaker 1: are never passing judgment. We love it. We know it's silly,
- 8:59Speaker 1: but we love that aspect about it. I felt, if
- 9:02Speaker 1: we have an emotional center that gives you license to
- 9:05Speaker 1: do some of the stuff, because we will always have
- 9:07Speaker 1: the core of it that remains. He says, I think
- 9:09Speaker 1: we did that. Here's I'm not so sure about that
- 9:13Speaker 1: emotional center that he's that he thinks the they got right.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Masters of the Universe has its moments of showing a
- 9:21Speaker 1: big heart and sensitivity and as it kind of focus
- 9:27Speaker 1: on like one's true strength. Though it does spend most
- 9:32Speaker 1: of its unnecessarily long run time it's almost two and
- 9:35Speaker 1: a half hours showing off it's big muscles and taking
- 9:38Speaker 1: us on a big, dumb, fun and entertaining voyage. There's
- 9:42Speaker 1: no denying the messy tone and its difficulty of maintaining momentum.
- 9:47Speaker 1: It also tries way too hard to be funny, almost
- 9:50Speaker 1: embarrassingly so. However, the movie also nails a lot of stuff.
- 9:56Speaker 1: This is a review that was written by Clint Worthington
- 9:59Speaker 1: for Rodger dot Com, and it says, to its credit,
- 10:03Speaker 1: Masters of the Universe leans hard into its eighties hair
- 10:05Speaker 1: metal aesthetics in some delightful ways. Modern effects make Eternia
- 10:10Speaker 1: look like a particularly glossy play set, and Richard Sale's
- 10:13Speaker 1: costume designs do their level best to adapt the various
- 10:16Speaker 1: costumes into something workable while retaining their cartoonish boldness. Says
- 10:21Speaker 1: Daniel Pemberton's rock guitar heavy score keeps the action chugging along.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It's it's pretty clear the cast is having a blast,
- 10:35Speaker 1: even if some don't have much to do. But Nicholas
- 10:39Speaker 1: Glitzing doesn't just look the part as he man. He
- 10:43Speaker 1: has the charm, He has the childlike wonder of a
- 10:45Speaker 1: guy who's just super excited to go back home and
- 10:49Speaker 1: swing a big sword around. He's just geeking out. He
- 10:52Speaker 1: plays it off pretty well as someone who doesn't feel
- 10:55Speaker 1: all that comfortable about who he is on Earth or Eternium,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and by the power of Gray Skull, Galitzin is a
- 11:02Speaker 1: solid hemen for a new generation. Continuing on Clint's review
- 11:09Speaker 1: on Roger Ebert, he says, which brings us to Letto,
- 11:13Speaker 1: who I hate to say it is incredible in this.
- 11:16Speaker 1: The actor's been trying to transition into an A list
- 11:18Speaker 1: movie star for quite some time, but I think rolls
- 11:21Speaker 1: like this and Blade Runner twenty four bring out his
- 11:25Speaker 1: innate diva in ways that actually serve those films well.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Even through a meticulously cgi a cgi'd skull, Leto brings
- 11:35Speaker 1: out a welcome bitchiness to Skeletor that jives well with
- 11:38Speaker 1: his eighties conception as a pure villain. He purrs with
- 11:42Speaker 1: a Tim Curry like effect and cackles with devilish gleam.
- 11:46Speaker 1: He tries to get his minions to join him in
- 11:48Speaker 1: his evil laughs. A late film, A late film mind
- 11:52Speaker 1: torture sequence places him in various novel context you have
- 11:56Speaker 1: to see to believe, but you'll cackle all the same.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I have read, and I don't know where, Maybe it's
- 12:03Speaker 1: just an internet thing, but I've read that Skeletor is
- 12:06Speaker 1: actually Leto's favorite was was Leto's favorite character growing up,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and as you can tell from that review, it shows
- 12:14Speaker 1: because he is arguably the best thing in the entire movie.
- 12:19Speaker 1: He chews up every scene with ease, and it's enjoyable
- 12:23Speaker 1: as hell to watch for everything this version of the
- 12:27Speaker 1: Masters of the Universe Hope to be Leto's skeletor is
- 12:31Speaker 1: the pinnacle of all of it. You know, it's I know,
- 12:38Speaker 1: I'm I think because I didn't grow up with them.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I think the expectations for me just weren't that high
- 12:45Speaker 1: to begin with. So what came. And I've seen comparisons,
- 12:48Speaker 1: and I don't think Masters of the Universe is as
- 12:50Speaker 1: good as this other movie. And I also don't think
- 12:53Speaker 1: it plays as well to its strengths and within the
- 12:58Speaker 1: kind of playfulness and sincerity of it. But it does
- 13:04Speaker 1: kind of remind me of the Crispine Dungeons and Dragons movie.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I would I don't. I never played Dungeons and Dragons,
- 13:11Speaker 1: but it was just a very fun, entertaining movie. I
- 13:14Speaker 1: don't think Masters of the Universe hits is on that level,
- 13:18Speaker 1: but it does. It certainly has signs of that, which
- 13:23Speaker 1: is what made me, I think, enjoy it for what
- 13:26Speaker 1: it is. I just read where I think I think
- 13:29Speaker 1: it's gonna cost Amazon MGM hundreds of millions of dollars,
- 13:33Speaker 1: So I have a feeling this is gonna be one
- 13:35Speaker 1: of the biggest, if not the biggest, kind of summer
- 13:38Speaker 1: box office flops of the year. But again I enjoyed it,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and I would not mind seeing a sequel, which they
- 13:46Speaker 1: do tease in the mid credit, and I think there's
- 13:51Speaker 1: even a post credit. But the mid credit, when I think,
- 13:54Speaker 1: is what people will will enjoy most. So Masters of
- 13:58Speaker 1: the Universe is getting a vix flick rating of three
- 14:01Speaker 1: and a half out of five and coming up next,
- 14:04Speaker 1: The Wayhan's Brothers are back. We just gotta grab that
- 14:09Speaker 1: strong hand. Why the get it scary movies back? Is
- 14:28Speaker 1: what I meant to say. They I guess, I guess
- 14:32Speaker 1: to be cool. It's scary movie. This is technically Scary
- 14:35Speaker 1: Movie six, but just scary movie for us in twenty
- 14:40Speaker 1: twenty six. No reason to make it seem old and
- 14:43Speaker 1: out of touch. So this is the first scary movie
- 14:48Speaker 1: that the Wayan brothers have been involved with since the
- 14:51Speaker 1: second one. Now I didn't realize this, but the Internet
- 14:54Speaker 1: told me that the after the record breaking success of
- 15:01Speaker 1: Scary Movie and Scary Movie two, the Waynes had asked
- 15:04Speaker 1: for a raise. The Weinstein's Harvey and Bob you may
- 15:08Speaker 1: have heard of them, offered them a fraction of what
- 15:11Speaker 1: they requested, only matching what they made from the first movie,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and they say that when the Wayne Brothers refused that,
- 15:23Speaker 1: the Weinstein secretly moved forward without them, stealing their ideas
- 15:27Speaker 1: for the third film and handing the reins to David Zucker.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The brothers found out they were entirely removed from the
- 15:34Speaker 1: franchise through an announcement in the press. So this is
- 15:42Speaker 1: this is a big deal, scary movie. Wayns brothers. Everyone's
- 15:45Speaker 1: back together again. It must be hilarious. Let's start with
- 15:50Speaker 1: rotten tomatoes tell you what it's about, which I don't
- 15:53Speaker 1: know if anybody really needs this. But twenty six years
- 15:56Speaker 1: after outrunning a suspecially familiar mass killer, Shorty, Cindy, and
- 16:00Speaker 1: Brenda find themselves targeted by another mad slasher. So after
- 16:07Speaker 1: a thirteen year hiatus, this sixth one has a plethora
- 16:12Speaker 1: of new horror movie victims to poke fun of, but regrettably,
- 16:16Speaker 1: the Weighans seem clueless as how to do it and
- 16:20Speaker 1: to actually make it funny. The shiftless Raboutical, as they
- 16:27Speaker 1: referred to it in the movie, almost immediately feels outdated
- 16:31Speaker 1: after a splendid opening, but once it's over, they have
- 16:36Speaker 1: the main focus just be just to be another scream
- 16:40Speaker 1: spoof and I feel like there's so many different directions
- 16:43Speaker 1: who could have taken instead of again having the main
- 16:48Speaker 1: thing be a scream again and goes face killer. A
- 16:53Speaker 1: scary movie goes hard at trying to cram in almost
- 16:55Speaker 1: every horror movie from basically twenty twenty four to twenty
- 16:59Speaker 1: two five, with cameos and franchise fan favorites thrown into
- 17:04Speaker 1: what feels like stupid, silly, and sometimes stale skits rather
- 17:07Speaker 1: than any kind of coherent story. But listen, I mean,
- 17:13Speaker 1: who are we kidding? These movies have always been more
- 17:14Speaker 1: about parody than plot, and this one is also very meta.
- 17:19Speaker 1: And it's no surprise the way ends wind up having
- 17:21Speaker 1: a lot to say about legacy now that they have
- 17:24Speaker 1: returned to the franchise. Not every joke works, but there
- 17:28Speaker 1: are certainly some laughs that come from the absolute, totalous,
- 17:32Speaker 1: ridiculousness of it all. Some references are pretty good, while
- 17:35Speaker 1: others are really they're just total waste of time. The
- 17:39Speaker 1: biggest joke of all, though I hope you're listening, is
- 17:43Speaker 1: the marketing strategy, Because it suggests that this scary movie
- 17:48Speaker 1: will offend everyone and every line will be crossed. It
- 17:52Speaker 1: sits on a throne of lies. Scary Movie ain't got
- 17:58Speaker 1: shit on the age we're currently. There are things and
- 18:01Speaker 1: I won't reveal them here, even though I know it's
- 18:03Speaker 1: been out for a little bit that just because a
- 18:07Speaker 1: name shows up or there's a mention of you know,
- 18:12Speaker 1: Democrat or Maga or whatever, that's not that's not pushing
- 18:16Speaker 1: the envelope. It's not crossing a line. It's I don't,
- 18:19Speaker 1: it's just it's it's sort of sad that that that
- 18:23Speaker 1: that's what that's what the Way and Brothers consider to
- 18:26Speaker 1: be edgy or you know, controversial, provocative. I will say
- 18:31Speaker 1: it is cool though to see all the original casts
- 18:34Speaker 1: back together again in their signature roles. Though that I
- 18:37Speaker 1: don't they don't really quite have the magic that they
- 18:41Speaker 1: used to, and it's it's quite stunning how underutilized Anna
- 18:47Speaker 1: Faris and Regina Hall are. Scary Movie is dumb entertainment,
- 18:51Speaker 1: But I didn't think it was that dumb to do
- 18:54Speaker 1: that to their two comedy gold ladies. It it honestly,
- 18:58Speaker 1: it doesn't really make any con sense. You would think
- 19:02Speaker 1: with them, with the Wayne brothers coming back and having
- 19:06Speaker 1: and having them too, that there would be something. I
- 19:09Speaker 1: don't know. I just felt like there was so much
- 19:12Speaker 1: not only to do with this, to do with the story,
- 19:15Speaker 1: but to do with that, so many opportunities to have
- 19:19Speaker 1: them do different stuff, and it's it's a bit disappointing,
- 19:22Speaker 1: to say the least. Scary Movie six clearly doesn't come
- 19:29Speaker 1: close to the first two movies. And while I've seen
- 19:33Speaker 1: the the other three, I've I can't really tell you
- 19:37Speaker 1: about them. I just wanted this scary movie to make
- 19:40Speaker 1: me laugh. It's it's really kind of going back to
- 19:43Speaker 1: kind of reliving those good old days when spoofing was
- 19:46Speaker 1: lit as the kids say, but it just it, it
- 19:50Speaker 1: just can't get there. At the end of the day,
- 19:52Speaker 1: I think we all know what these movies are, and
- 19:54Speaker 1: perhaps there's enough here for some longtime fans to you know,
- 19:58Speaker 1: to walk away feeling entertained. But personally, it's I think
- 20:04Speaker 1: it's rather obvious that this series is well past its
- 20:07Speaker 1: prime and this is not a come back to brag about.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Scary Movie six gets a vix Flix rating of two
- 20:17Speaker 1: out of five and coming up next, The Greatest Showman
- 20:24Speaker 1: with a Bow and Arrow raned off the Gray next.
- 20:42Speaker 1: In case you're confused, I'm talking about the death of
- 20:44Speaker 1: Robin Hood. If you've seen just a small piece of
- 20:48Speaker 1: a trailer or even the poster. Hugh Jackman looks like
- 20:53Speaker 1: ganned Off the Gray and in the movie he tricks
- 20:58Speaker 1: people and tells them that his name is Randolph. So
- 21:02Speaker 1: Randolph the Gray per Rotten Tomatoes. Grappling with his past
- 21:07Speaker 1: after a life of crime and murder, Robin Hood, played
- 21:10Speaker 1: by Hugh Jackman, finds himself gravely injured after a battle
- 21:15Speaker 1: he thought would be his last. In the hands of
- 21:17Speaker 1: a mysterious woman played by Jody Comer, he has offered
- 21:20Speaker 1: a chance at salvation. So this comes from the writer
- 21:25Speaker 1: and director of Pig, which is fantastic movie, one of
- 21:30Speaker 1: Nicholas Cage's best performances. Michael Schnowski's adaptation of Robin Hood
- 21:36Speaker 1: is a bleak one. He sets out to deconstruct the legend,
- 21:40Speaker 1: to show us a tired old outlaw whose past sins
- 21:43Speaker 1: continue to constantly come back for vengeance. It's a reckoning
- 21:47Speaker 1: that's quiet and heavy. Jackman himself, he's he turns in
- 21:52Speaker 1: stellar work here as our tragically flawed title character. The
- 21:57Speaker 1: grizzled look alone that he's that he's flaunting here is fantastic.
- 22:01Speaker 1: But there's a ferociousness and gravitas that he brings to
- 22:05Speaker 1: the role that is outstanding. Via Indy Wire, there's an
- 22:12Speaker 1: interview by Ann Thompson the titles called Hugh Jackman on
- 22:15Speaker 1: his brutal New Robin Hood and why he's suddenly dying
- 22:18Speaker 1: in all his movies, But in this interview it is
- 22:22Speaker 1: She asked, the movie is about the end of Robin
- 22:24Speaker 1: Hood's life. How much do you know about the historic figure?
- 22:28Speaker 1: And Hugh Jackman says, I read a bunch of books
- 22:30Speaker 1: about it. If you wanted to believe he was real,
- 22:33Speaker 1: you can find evidence for them. There are records of
- 22:35Speaker 1: people through the century since the eleven hundreds, and it
- 22:38Speaker 1: changed up until the fifteen hundreds. He was just an outlaw,
- 22:41Speaker 1: horrible person, a cautionary tale. Then as things started to
- 22:44Speaker 1: change politically in England, there was the beginning of that
- 22:47Speaker 1: feeling of an uprising by the serfs against the aristocracy
- 22:52Speaker 1: and the landowners, and this cultural hero rocking the boat
- 22:56Speaker 1: and stealing from the rich to give to the poorest
- 22:58Speaker 1: started to be birthed at the beginning. If you watch him,
- 23:02Speaker 1: he was a bad guy with some horrible with some
- 23:04Speaker 1: honorable traits. He had some rules like do not harm women,
- 23:08Speaker 1: so his outlaws would never touch a woman, or he
- 23:10Speaker 1: would give someone a second chance if they were lying
- 23:12Speaker 1: to him, so that he gradually became the hero. These
- 23:16Speaker 1: myths arise for a purpose, for a need that already exists.
- 23:21Speaker 1: So the Death of Robinhood, it's brutal and bloody and
- 23:24Speaker 1: barbaric at first, then becomes this melancholonic, melancholic, reflective character study.
- 23:33Speaker 1: It's a tender yet sluggish meditation on mortality, and while
- 23:37Speaker 1: I can certainly appreciate the ambition and approach, the film's
- 23:40Speaker 1: slow pace and lack of just a more intriguing narrative
- 23:45Speaker 1: holds it back from being something I think truly fascinating. However,
- 23:51Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that there aren't several complimentary components within
- 23:54Speaker 1: the film. The Dude push it closer to hitting its target.
- 23:58Speaker 1: There's pats Sky, this gorgeous cinematography, the stunning locale, the
- 24:05Speaker 1: superb score, and the production and costume design is incredible
- 24:10Speaker 1: as well. Bill Scarsguard is in this as well as
- 24:15Speaker 1: Jody Comber. They're both great, but I can't help but
- 24:18Speaker 1: feel as though they had more to contribute. But I
- 24:21Speaker 1: just don't think the script gave them room to do so.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Sernovsky's gutsy and grim interpretation of our arrow shooting folk
- 24:32Speaker 1: hero is inarguably attractive and quite tedious too. But through
- 24:38Speaker 1: it all, what we eventually get out of this journey
- 24:40Speaker 1: of redemption is gratifying enough, but we're still left wanting more.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Continuing from that Indie Wired interview, she asked Hugh what
- 24:56Speaker 1: is the message of the movie? And Jackman says, be
- 25:01Speaker 1: careful of the stories you buy into. We get stories
- 25:06Speaker 1: on all sorts of levels from the day were born.
- 25:08Speaker 1: We get them from media, we get them from our parents,
- 25:11Speaker 1: we get them from religion, from all over the place.
- 25:14Speaker 1: But do they feel right for you? Because those stories
- 25:17Speaker 1: have been used to do a lot of violent damage
- 25:19Speaker 1: in history. What if that story, your legend of him
- 25:22Speaker 1: friend of robinhood was actually his own creation to make
- 25:25Speaker 1: people do terrible things to follow him. What if it
- 25:29Speaker 1: was all a lie. What if maybe there was a
- 25:32Speaker 1: couple of rich people he stole from. But what if
- 25:35Speaker 1: he never gave it to the porn What if he
- 25:37Speaker 1: was just a brutal murderer. Now, even at the end
- 25:40Speaker 1: of the movie, he talks about how we're not entirely sure.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I like that idea, and it is touched on in
- 25:50Speaker 1: the movie. It's not. I think there's a lot more
- 25:53Speaker 1: exploration there, a lot more that I think the film
- 25:57Speaker 1: could dig into, but it's But I'd like that idea
- 26:03Speaker 1: of just a story being told and as it goes
- 26:07Speaker 1: from person to person to generation to generation, how it changes,
- 26:12Speaker 1: and how we have this idea of someone that, like
- 26:19Speaker 1: I said, could be wrong. What if it was all
- 26:20Speaker 1: just lies? But maybe somewhere in the middle there is
- 26:23Speaker 1: the truth. Maybe maybe he was a hero for some,
- 26:27Speaker 1: but also this brutal savage, you know, maybe they're one
- 26:35Speaker 1: and the same. I suppose Robin Hood may forever be
- 26:38Speaker 1: an enigma, but at least we can take some solace
- 26:41Speaker 1: in that this version he looks like Gandalf and is
- 26:47Speaker 1: willing and able to slit a kid's throat and never
- 26:50Speaker 1: think about them again. So The Death of Robin Hood
- 26:57Speaker 1: is getting a vix Flix rating of three out of
- 27:00Speaker 1: five stars. When I first saw the poster, it instantly
- 27:04Speaker 1: gave me Northman vibes. I wish it was kind of
- 27:08Speaker 1: more in the vein of the Northman, but still I
- 27:12Speaker 1: think there is I think there is a good movie
- 27:16Speaker 1: here that could have been a great movie. So there
- 27:21Speaker 1: you go. That'll do it for this volume of the
- 27:25Speaker 1: Cinema Chronicles right here on Nashville Movie Dispatch. Check out

- 27:46Speaker 1: episode of the Vick Flicks podcast with a review of
- 27:50Speaker 1: Katore Angelina Jolie's new movie that just came out. Also,
- 27:55Speaker 1: I have a ranking of all the Toy Story movies,
- 27:59Speaker 1: all five of them. I left out light Year. I
- 28:01Speaker 1: don't count it. I liked it, I did like it,
- 28:04Speaker 1: but I don't count it. Only the one that has
- 28:06Speaker 1: Toy Story in the title. So and then a lot
- 28:09Speaker 1: more work from of course Stony and Kevin and Sean.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Just drink it all up and until next month, just
