- 0:00Did we get it? Of course we got it. Told you we'd get it. I don't understand.
- 0:05The attacks didn't happen. The car accident you in, that was an hour ago.
- 0:09I was driving the other car.
- 0:12What's done is done, and what we say is done.
- 0:16Music.
- 0:20Thank you.
- 0:50We'll see you next time. Hello, people. We're back with another exciting episode
- 0:54in our retrospective of the Mission Impossible franchise.
- 0:57Guys, today we return with Mission Impossible Fallout, the biggest hit of all
- 1:03of them, until we get the final numbers for the new one coming out, actually today.
- 1:08And this one was $178 million. This one made $874 million. It is Tom Cruise's
- 1:13biggest hit to date, next to Top Gun Maverick.
- 1:16Did Top Gun Maverick not, like, do better than it?
- 1:19I said today, except for Top Gun Maverick. Oh, right, right, right.
- 1:24We'll be more clear, you know? No, I was pretty clear there. I spoke English. Right.
- 1:30Okay. I'm an idiot. I haven't even begun. I haven't even begun.
- 1:33You already pissed me off.
- 1:34Right. Chill out. See, it's Mr. Fucking Angry here, you know.
- 1:39Take a chill pill. Hot. Jesus Christ. 9.30 in the morning. This is 9.30 in the
- 1:43morning, people. That's what I have to deal with. 9.30 in the fucking morning. Boo-hoo.
- 1:47He gives me Tourette's. Boo-hoo. You have Tourette's anyway.
- 1:51Chris McQuarrie's back as also the head writer. And then we got a new composer.
- 1:57Lon, Lon, I think it's Lon Bald, Lon Bald is his name.
- 2:02I like his stuff. He does a lot of action films, but this is his one time out.
- 2:06Again, all the scores for Mission Apostles never let me down besides part two.
- 2:11But here we are. We're going to jump into it. But this time,
- 2:15yep, scores never let me down, the Mission Apostles.
- 2:18And so this time we got IMF agent Ethan Hunt and his team are tasked with preventing
- 2:23a nuclear attack by a group of terrorists, the Apostles. They're a splinter
- 2:26group from the band of bastards we knew from the last film, The Syndicate.
- 2:32They must contend with Solomon Lane again. Likes to see Sean Harris back and
- 2:37hopefully get the rogue guy. What's this guy's name again?
- 2:41We got John Lark. They got to look for John Lark. Yes.
- 2:44He's the one trying to buy these three plutonium balls, and they are going to
- 2:49build themselves three little nuclear disasters. But, but, but,
- 2:54but, but more importantly than that, Ethan Hunt...
- 2:57You know, never mind all that nuclear bomb shit. I mean, that's small potatoes.
- 3:01Ethan Hunt has to deal with waking up in Belfast at the very start.
- 3:04I mean, come on, you know.
- 3:07He's in some kind of a safe house in Belfast. Yes. He got a chippy.
- 3:11That's right. Yeah, yeah. He gets a chippy.
- 3:15Yeah, we got Tom Beck, Ethan Hunt, Henry Cavill as Austin Walker,
- 3:18Ving Rhames as Luther, Sam and Pegg as Benji.
- 3:21It's nice to see Ving Rhames getting a big, big part in this one. Yes.
- 3:25Rebecca Ferguson as back as Ilsa. I let her out for a bit to go ahead and return as the role.
- 3:30Right, right. That was good of you. Pretty nice of me. Pretty nice of me.
- 3:33I love you, Rebecca. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:35Sadly, sadly, she knows that only too well, and so do the police and the FBI.
- 3:41Sean Harris, Solomon Kane, Angela Bassett as Erica Sloan, Vanessa Kirby as the White Widow.
- 3:47I like Vanessa Kirby, but I think the character's kind of wasted a bit here.
- 3:50She's kind of just the middleman, which is technically what she is.
- 3:53Yeah. But she does play Max's daughter, who we know Max from the first one.
- 3:57Yes, Vanessa Redgrave. Vanessa Redgrave, yep, exactly.
- 4:00Wes Bentley is Eric, pointless character. Alec Baldwin is Hundley,
- 4:04and then some other guys.
- 4:07And then, of course, John Lark. We don't know who is John Lark exactly.
- 4:12Jeremy Renner could not replace his role because he was busy doing the Avengers endgame.
- 4:17Apparently, that's just sort of like an excuse, basically.
- 4:21Apparently, he was pissed off because his character was originally meant to
- 4:25come back in the script only to be killed off.
- 4:29So he said, you know, apparently he said, you know, I'm not going to come back
- 4:33if you're not going to respect my character. So he didn't return.
- 4:37But then in recent years he said he's open to returning but they haven't asked
- 4:41him back. So there's been a fallout there, pun intended.
- 4:46Dealing! Dealing!
- 4:49He chose not to accept his mission. Exactly. And well, you know, these things happen.
- 4:54You know, there's obviously some sort of fallout, you know, boom,
- 4:58boom, somewhere along the lines and maybe a wee bit of ego,
- 5:02who knows, maybe a clash of egos, don't know, but the whole sort of,
- 5:06you know, filming schedules, clashing, that's usually code for something else.
- 5:12Yeah, I think that's what happened with Paula Patton as well, just because her role.
- 5:17And Jeremy Remer is a get, so I can understand why he'd be a little flustered.
- 5:21But it's too bad he didn't come back, because I'd like to have seen him.
- 5:25And, you know, the one thing about Mission Impossible to see him do right is
- 5:30all these little characters that have showed up in the past,
- 5:32most of them get their comeuppance, or they get their 180s, they get their arcs, and stuff like that.
- 5:39Apparently, whenever Jeremy first joined basically the franchise,
- 5:44you know, as a character of Brent, apparently he was originally being set up
- 5:49to eventually take over from Tom Cruise.
- 5:52So maybe that's what he was pissed off about. Who knows?
- 5:55I think he's got a lot of issues, Remmer, just because same thing happened with
- 6:00the Jason Bourne franchise.
- 6:02Yeah. He did a spinoff called The Bourne Legacy. Yes. Which is actually quite good.
- 6:08Actually, very good. I really enjoyed it, but it wasn't received well because
- 6:12fans wanted, you know, Matt Damon, which I understand.
- 6:14So this is like the second franchise has kind of blown him off.
- 6:17And even in Avengers, he doesn't do much.
- 6:21Yeah, he's like a supporting sort of superhero.
- 6:23Yeah, and I do think he deserves better. I like to see him, you know,
- 6:27more of a starring role, especially in a big action one.
- 6:30The Bourne Legacy was decent, and he's good in Ghost Protocol.
- 6:35Yeah, I mean, yeah, I mean, I quite like, you know, seeing him on the screen and stuff.
- 6:40But apparently even in the Avengers, the Marvel Universe, which I'm not into
- 6:44at all, you know, each to their own.
- 6:45But apparently he's even been sort of pushed to the sidelines with that as well,
- 6:50where his character is a Hawkeye.
- 6:53There's like a new Hawkeye played by a young woman now.
- 6:57So he's been pushed to the sidelines.
- 6:59No, no, no, the story is, what happened was, just piggybacks on what I just
- 7:03said, He did a Hawkeye TV series. Yes.
- 7:06His daughter is who's taking over the role. Right. And she's in that show.
- 7:12His screen daughter or his male daughter?
- 7:16Obviously his screen daughter. Well, that's okay. Just double check him.
- 7:20Jesus. So anyways, and he was, they're doing Hawkeye series too.
- 7:26And they were going to pay him less than they got paid for the last Hawkeye.
- 7:30So he told him to fuck off. Right. Right.
- 7:33And he's right. He's completely right. Okay. Fuck Marvel.
- 7:37They're going to treat him like that. Well, I have no time for Marvel or Disney
- 7:39anyway, but that's a different podcast.
- 7:42No, it isn't because you say that in every fucking podcast.
- 7:44Well, you know, it's true though.
- 7:47All right. So Tom decides to accept the mission where you got to get the apostles.
- 7:52He's got to get these three plutonium cores. They're going to build these three nuclear weapons.
- 7:57Ethan must get those in his hand before they fall into the wrong hands. Yes.
- 8:03He basically has to stop nuclear bombs, and essentially there's a lot of sort
- 8:08of crazy stunts and espionage sort of stuff going on in between and double-crossing
- 8:14and all that sort of thing.
- 8:15But yeah. Well, I do like the fact that Ethan Hunt finally fucks up. Yeah. At the start?
- 8:21Yes, because what he has to do here is pretty much do the trade,
- 8:25and he lets his guard down by protecting Luther, who Luther even says, kill me. Yes. It's okay.
- 8:31But in doing so, in being distracted by that, him and Benji forget that they
- 8:37left the plutonium case right behind them,
- 8:41and they take their eyes off the prize for just a second, and that causes them to lose it.
- 8:47Yeah. And this causes a lot of distrust, especially with the Sloan character,
- 8:52Erica Sloan, played by Angela Bassett, who will have a huge part in the franchise coming up soon. Yes.
- 8:58Yes. and of course because she then doesn't trust
- 9:01Ethan Hunt and IMF she sends in
- 9:04her sort of right hand man played by
- 9:07Henry Cavill who is a great character in this film yeah we finally get I like
- 9:13everyone don't get me wrong most protocol is a little weak with the villains
- 9:17but you'll like them I mean they did their job but it was just the way they
- 9:22were directed and written I mean this one by far.
- 9:26The best villain in the entire franchise. And he also has an amazing presence.
- 9:31I mean, we sort of know this anyway. He's basically Superman.
- 9:33But here, especially for me anyway, Cavill has just an amazing presence.
- 9:39What I like about the casting here is Tom Cruise is a small guy. Yeah.
- 9:46And Henry Cavill is a big guy. Yes. So I like the fact he casted him.
- 9:51Some actors won't do that. They're very reserved of having a,
- 9:55You know, because technically, Henry Cavill has just as much screen time as Tom Cruise.
- 10:02And they're in pretty much most of the scenes together. So to be able to not
- 10:08neglect your franchise for your own ego's sake, I like the fact he was willing
- 10:12to play up against a bigger muscular guy.
- 10:17Well, it adds a threat to his character as well. But also, you know,
- 10:21there's ways of filling in these things. Yes, Tom Cruise is quite a bit smaller than Cavill.
- 10:27But at the same time, you know, they could film these things,
- 10:30you know, I don't know, have Tom Cruise standing on a box or whatever,
- 10:33you know, where, you know, it's all to do with the angles and stuff.
- 10:36So you don't notice it. You don't really notice it. You know what I mean?
- 10:39Not unless you're like really like zooming in or whatever when the two of them
- 10:43are walking together or something, you know, but it didn't bother me at all. That side of it.
- 10:49That's my point. It's not, but actors usually won't work with another actor,
- 10:56that's overpowering them.
- 10:59Stallone's infamous for it? Stallone's famous for that. Yeah.
- 11:01The only time he's done that is with Rocky Farrow, Drago, and now it's because
- 11:05he had to be taller and bigger. Yes. David and Goliath's story.
- 11:08But anyways, you guys get my point. Obviously, clearly, you don't. I do.
- 11:15Because you're not listening to what I'm saying. You're not listening because
- 11:17I was fucking agreeing with you, you knob.
- 11:20You just fucking, fucking doll. You're a leash.
- 11:23All right. So I love this twist. When they find Nils, the guy who makes the
- 11:29bombs in the hospital bed,
- 11:32And he wakes up and he survived a car accident.
- 11:35And you see the real Wolf Blitzer, if you guys don't know that,
- 11:38he's a famous reporter for CNN in the U.S.
- 11:43And he's reading off nuclear bomb attacks who went off in Rome,
- 11:46Jerusalem, and Mecca. And Nils is in the bed laughing. Ha, ha, ha.
- 11:50Long story short, he never was in a hospital bed. The whole thing was a setup
- 11:54to get him the code to get into his phone.
- 11:58That's a good call back to the first film as well, but to do something similar.
- 12:02Yeah, the very opening scene. That's right. And so it's nice.
- 12:05And then you see Benji in the mask for the first time. Yes.
- 12:09And he always likes his mask. So it's a nice night. I told you,
- 12:14I even seen it for the podcast. I forgot about the opening scene.
- 12:17It's nice. And then you got this whole 16 minutes, I think, into it.
- 12:21And then we get, once they catch him and they get to the phone code,
- 12:26they find out where John Clark is going to meet.
- 12:30The credits start. Yes. About 16 minutes into it. Yeah. I love my mission of possible credits.
- 12:35Yeah. Oh, no, no. It's a, it's, it always sort of, it's a good teaser.
- 12:39Essentially. I mean, I mean, the first segment is always like the sort of cold
- 12:43opening for, you know, the teaser and then, you know, something dramatic will
- 12:46happen and then, and then you'll see the fuse lighting and the credits kick in.
- 12:50I always actually like the credits, the way they actually tell you the story,
- 12:54you know, with the images from the film that you're about to see, which, um, yeah.
- 12:59Ballsy move. Yeah, well, they don't throw too much away, you know,
- 13:02to be fair. I know, but you always have these people going, I figured it out.
- 13:05I guarantee you do that. You'd be like, oh, I figured it out. Yeah, I get it.
- 13:11I should have saw the whole film. Yeah.
- 13:14Yeah, so the airdrop, the first big stunt. This airdrop's fucking impressive.
- 13:19The only thing CGI'd were obviously the lightning clouds. They weren't going
- 13:22to jump into a lightning storm.
- 13:23I'm surprised Cruz didn't, to be fair.
- 13:26Yeah, no kidding. Well, we're going to wait for a monsoon season. yeah exactly
- 13:29yeah film this but i love
- 13:33the fact where you got this egomaniac right away you i didn't like henry cavill
- 13:38well which is fine that's kind of what you need you got you're gonna love him
- 13:41and hate him back and forth you don't know he henry cavill is very good trusting
- 13:45him they're not trusting him they're trusting him exactly exactly um but but even the arrogance of
- 13:51the character you know what i mean you're meant to love to hate him that's sort
- 13:56of pretty obvious from the start, you know?
- 13:59Yeah, well, he's doing this airdrop, and Ethan Hunt goes up to him and goes,
- 14:02is your fucking oxygen even on? Yeah.
- 14:05There's no oxygen in this altitude, idiot. And he puts it on for him.
- 14:09And Henry Cavill goes, okay, we're going to wait for the lightning storm.
- 14:11And Henry Cavill thinks he's all badass.
- 14:13And he's just, oh, no, I'm ready to go now. And he's like, wait,
- 14:16you can't. And of course, the lightning hits and it knocks his suit out of power or whatever.
- 14:21And you got Ethan going down there to save him.
- 14:24And then he wakes up, And he goes, oh, you lost your oxygen tank Didn't realize
- 14:29that Ethan Hunt just saved his ass Exactly, but I would also add to this bit In retrospect,
- 14:35if you pay attention I believe this is also the scene Where it's followed up
- 14:41way later on Where Ethan Hunt scans him for the first time.
- 14:46Without his knowledge, you know, whenever he's like putting on the suit,
- 14:49I believe I could be wrong here, but I think very craftily, Ethan Hunt scans him.
- 14:54And I think that's when they find out shit about him later on. Let's just say.
- 14:59What do you mean scans him? He has a wee scanning thing, you know,
- 15:03to do with the masks. He has to scan his face, you know? Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 15:08Yeah. It's to do with finding out basically what we'll find out later on about him.
- 15:12Oh, okay. Don't remember that. I didn't really catch that.
- 15:16I would have to double check but i do know there is some sort
- 15:19of sort of trick essentially to do with
- 15:22scaling i believe ethan hunt um sort
- 15:25of gets him because because ethan's obviously no dozer you know and he wants
- 15:30to you know and he's not going to just jump off a plane or get somebody into
- 15:33his team that he hasn't checked out but i believe this is where ethan first
- 15:38scans him you know to find out exactly what the deal is you know okay yeah i
- 15:43didn't catch up i'm gonna check it again,
- 15:45but, and then we get to probably one of the best fight scenes in the series
- 15:48too. Yeah, it's brilliant. Really well choreographed.
- 15:51Yeah. The whole thing is so, the whole thing. It's brilliant.
- 15:54And it's this beautifully, beautiful white bathroom.
- 15:58Yes. And they walk in and they knock out John Lark. After the fight scene with John Lark, it's just.
- 16:04Yeah. Oh no, it's really well.
- 16:07It's really believable. So it is, you know. Yeah. They said they had a shot.
- 16:13Shoot for about a couple weeks and then I'm taking like six weeks to film this whole scene.
- 16:18Yeah. And just the little things when they're trying to scan his face and Henry
- 16:23Cavill breaks the laptop by smacking John Lark with it. Because he's too rough on him. He's too.
- 16:28Yeah, and Ethan Hunt's like, you know, you fucking idiot.
- 16:31But he doesn't say it. He just looks at him with his hands in the air like,
- 16:34And because they got to be quiet. And then you see the party is coming in.
- 16:37They think there's a big party going on in the bathroom. Yeah.
- 16:41But the fight scene is so good.
- 16:44And then when Elsa comes in to save the day, because this guy was kicking their
- 16:47ass and Elsa shoots her in the face and she goes, can you get the mask?
- 16:54Well, we need a face first.
- 16:56Yeah. But not only that, Henry Cavill had fucked up the laptop anyway.
- 17:01With so yeah no no it's just a really it's quite brutal oh that's what i'm very believable you,
- 17:07bring up this white i bring up this white bathroom i think it's
- 17:10deliberate because the final shot there's a huge fucking blood stain and on
- 17:15the tiles yes obviously getting his head blown off so that's what i'm saying
- 17:19it shows the brutality not you know we see the fun punches and it's good kung
- 17:23fu fighting kicking some ass and all blah but the end of the game is this man's
- 17:27head was is blown off. When they show you the aftermath, it's pretty cool.
- 17:30And John Lark, well, we'll find out later on that he's not actually John Lark,
- 17:33but he can fucking handle himself, that guy, you know?
- 17:37Yeah, he's definitely a John Lark henchman or something. Well,
- 17:40we'll find out later on who John Lark really is, but it's...
- 17:43We all know who John Lark is at this point. Yeah. It's Superman.
- 17:46It's Superman Day. Yeah, it's Clark Kent. Yeah.
- 17:51You know what they should have done with Swiss plutonium? Mm-hmm. With kryptonite.
- 17:57That would afford yeah yeah,
- 18:01now the whole broker scene you find out that she's just a broker she's the middle
- 18:05man and they don't want money they want our boy back they want Solomon Lane
- 18:12Solomon back Solomon Lane back if you give a Solomon Lane we'll give you the plutonium and we.
- 18:22I'd like Vanessa Curve I just just kind of wasted here I'd rather have somebody
- 18:26who is I almost wish they'd brought back Axley Max herself,
- 18:30Vanessa Redgrave Apparently they did offer her to come back at some point in
- 18:35the series I'm not sure if it was this film or maybe a previous one, but she did refuse him,
- 18:40but Vanessa Kirby I have absolutely nothing against her and she is effective
- 18:44enough but she just does not have the gravitas or the presence of Vanessa Redgrave
- 18:49I'm sorry, she does actually quite a good impression of her in terms of,
- 18:53you could buy that she's her daughter,
- 18:55but I'm afraid she just does not have the gravitas or the believability of Vanessa Redgrave.
- 19:02I think someone like Emily Blunt.
- 19:06Possibly might pull this off or even
- 19:08do a no-name but like um but venice kribby
- 19:12at the time actually was just an up-and-coming herself to be fair to her i
- 19:15have nothing against her she's a fine actress but this just
- 19:18wasn't when she was on the screen when max was
- 19:21on the screen it was like she was just so calm and
- 19:23sophisticated and doubt yeah he meets james bond
- 19:26and but with her i was just
- 19:29like i don't buy her as a as a
- 19:32serious threat whereas with the
- 19:35original max character you were intrigued
- 19:38and you know vanessa redgrave always has that great you
- 19:41know charisma and gravitas and presence and i just didn't buy it with vanessa
- 19:46i don't buy it with vanessa kirby it's just she works to a certain extent but
- 19:52i'm just not you know comparing to vanessa redgrave it's night and day I do
- 19:58like when they're talking about,
- 20:01we want you to get Salmon Lane,
- 20:03and they tell if a dreamy, or if it's like Ethan Hunt's trying to figure out
- 20:11how he's going to get Salmon Lane out.
- 20:14But it's done with no sound. It's just done with music.
- 20:18Yes. And it's done with, long story short, Ethan Hunt ends up killing an innocent
- 20:22cop. and then we cut out of this flash forward I guess you can say where they're
- 20:28telling him kill all the cops. Why? We don't want any witnesses.
- 20:32You need to kill the cops. Well we know Ethan Hunt's not doing this. Yes.
- 20:36And this will come back during this. But this whole break scene with Solomon
- 20:41Cain is master class. Oh this is fantastic.
- 20:47I mean this is I would say possibly the highlight of the entire series.
- 20:53I mean, it is just like proper, this is what action films should be, you know what I mean?
- 20:58It is proper, thrilling, non-stop exciting.
- 21:02It is a masterclass. It is fantastic in terms of action thrillers.
- 21:08Yeah, it's, you've got them having to get Salman Lane as the,
- 21:13as the, the SWAT man, whatever it is, is transporting him. It goes in the water.
- 21:19Luther and I'll have to go in and get him out of there as it's sinking before he drowns.
- 21:23At the same time, you've got Ethan being chased. He's got a motorcycle and he's just, the chasing.
- 21:28I haven't seen good chases like this since, I'll be honest with you,
- 21:31since Ronan, great film with Robert T. And you feel as well,
- 21:34you feel that there's actual, again, with the previous film as well.
- 21:38And so many of them, you know, sequences like this throughout the series,
- 21:41you feel that there's proper danger here and threat because it's all stunts
- 21:45and it's all done by real people as opposed to, whenever it's CGI,
- 21:51and I know I'm always criticizing CGI, but so what, whenever it's CGI and an action sequence,
- 21:56it, as an audience member takes away that danger and that threat but here,
- 22:01it's 100% yes, obviously in the back of your mind you know that Tom Cruise isn't
- 22:05going to die but you know that this is like proper stuntmen and stuntwomen,
- 22:10crazy bastards doing real action.
- 22:13And that really adds to the audience experience.
- 22:18Yeah. I mean, the whole thing is, and Tom is doing that speed.
- 22:22He is, this isn't a sped up film. He's actually going through the streets and
- 22:25the whole thing is timing perfectly.
- 22:27Yes. Even when he takes a hit with that car, he flies over that car. That's him.
- 22:31Simon Pegg has said it is completely stressful doing a film with Tom cruise
- 22:38because there are so many occasions where you're genuinely worried that he's going to die,
- 22:44yeah i mean he's not wearing a helmet at this point during this car chase during this chase.
- 22:49It's fucking batshit crazy and when he's
- 22:52going through the streets and these cars there's he's driving through streets
- 22:55this isn't like six o'clock in the morning let's shoot with a couple cars in
- 22:59the road this place is rush hour no no no it's all to be fair like the other
- 23:03cars supposedly the members of the public are actually stunt men and stunt women
- 23:07driving. Of course they are. Yeah.
- 23:10But it's packed. Yeah. But it's not real members of the public and those other
- 23:15cars. Let's just get that clear.
- 23:17People would understand that's what I meant. Why would you not understand that?
- 23:20Well, you sort of suggested that it's rush hour and it's real traffic.
- 23:24I said it's like rush hour. Well, that's okay, but it's just the way you said
- 23:29it. It sounded like you were suggesting it was real. No, no, not again.
- 23:33Anyways, That's just, wow.
- 23:37It's just like doing a podcast with a deaf person. What?
- 23:41See? Exactly. Fuck me. Fuck me.
- 23:45Or Tourette's back. You know what I mean? They asked for fucking hell. He was fucking.
- 23:49God, you don't listen to a fucking word that comes out of my fucking mind. What? See?
- 23:54Anyways, I'm done. I'm just over yet. I'm just frustrated now.
- 23:58Yeah, so. Yeah, guys. I'm sure you've listened to this podcast.
- 24:01You know how the stunts work. It's pretty impressive.
- 24:05And Rain Man over here. Pardon the Tom Cruise.
- 24:08Nah, they're, uh, thinks they're, you know, I'm talking about real people.
- 24:12He's a clueless twat. No, no. The way you said it. I never, no,
- 24:16I didn't. No, I didn't. No, no.
- 24:17The way you said it, you said this is rush hour. No, I didn't.
- 24:19And I'm like, what? I said, it's like rush hour.
- 24:22Like rush hour. What, the song? There's a lot of cars. Did I say it was like
- 24:26rush hour? Real human, real people in there and civilians?
- 24:29Well, I hope not. I said, there was a lot of cars like you see in rush hour.
- 24:34That's what I said. At what point did I say anything about pedestrians?
- 24:38Let it go. Yeah, let it go. Chill out. I can't.
- 24:41Fucking hate me. Fuck. Now I got to see the movie with you now today.
- 24:45I don't want to watch the movie now anymore. Don't go. Okay.
- 24:50So I do like how it's convenient. He gets hit.
- 24:54His bike gets hit. He flips over the car. And two feet away is where he's got the extracting point.
- 25:00Well, to be fair, that's where he was heading to anyway. way.
- 25:03I know, but it's pretty it is the one of those ghost, you know,
- 25:08it's one of those unreaded roles with The Monster Impossible.
- 25:12It's kind of like Indiana Jones hat.
- 25:13It always comes back in the picture.
- 25:16At least he was hit though, because I mean like he's doing a lot of dodging
- 25:19in and out of fucking cars and all sorts, you know.
- 25:23All the civilians. Yeah, because they're real life people, according to Kieran, you know.
- 25:28What the hell? Members of the public just going about their business.
- 25:33Fuck me, I'll tell you, I'll tell you a little.
- 25:35And then you got Ilsa, I knew right away that was Ilsa. The whole point is that
- 25:39she wants to kill Solomon, Solomon Lane.
- 25:41Yes. And one of the reasons, A, for revenge, but also because it gets her in good graces with MI6.
- 25:48Yes. So the whole point is, and so the whole time, the great thing about Ethan
- 25:52Hunt, he knows Ilsa wants him dead, but also needs him back in the good graces
- 25:57of MI6 so she can get back in there.
- 26:00But the whole time, you don't see Ethan really planning. this whole plan is
- 26:04to get Lane back to MI6 to help her.
- 26:08But we don't know that's going on in the back of his head. Yes.
- 26:11He's trading Solomon Lane at this point for the plutonium.
- 26:15Yes, exactly. But we know his endgame is to get him back to MI6.
- 26:21Yeah. Essentially him back captured again and then MI6 will then basically interrogate
- 26:27Solomon and then as they were doing before,
- 26:30passing them around countries to get sort of, to attempt to get information
- 26:34out of him about his sort of terrorist activities.
- 26:38And then when, you know, we talked, when she runs him off the road in the motorcycle.
- 26:44Yes. He just stops in the middle of the street. Remember in the last film there?
- 26:48And he does this to her, but he hits her. He runs her over. Oh, I know that. Yeah.
- 26:52Obviously, he knows she's going to be but she knows what she's doing. Well, he's no choice.
- 26:56He's got no choice, but I think he knew that she'd be all right. Yeah.
- 27:01As long as she's going to the wheels, she'll be all right. I would say as well,
- 27:04there's a good tension the first time you watch this as well,
- 27:07because you think that Henry Cavill is actually a good guy,
- 27:13who thinks that Ethan Hunt is a rogue agent and going to go rogue.
- 27:19So there's a good lot of tension here. And then in the scene here in France,
- 27:24where basically they have Solomon sort of with a hood on him,
- 27:28and they're putting him in the back of a car in a garage, and a French policewoman
- 27:31finds him, and then the bad guys come, and there's a shootout,
- 27:36and Tom Cruise basically saves the French policewoman.
- 27:39Then you think that Henry Cavill realizes, nah, basically, Ethan is one of the good guys.
- 27:45He's not actually rogue, but then we'll find out more later on concerning Henry's
- 27:49character. It's very well played all around.
- 27:52Yeah, and I do like the small cameo and sad ending, but it's nice.
- 27:59It's nice to miss the possibility you do get casualties.
- 28:02And that's Hunley, Albert Baldwin's character, who he's one who tells Ethan
- 28:08that the widow is a mole. Yes. She's on our side.
- 28:12Kind of like what Max was. I believe Max was like that as well,
- 28:15if I'm not mistaken. Well, they're double agents, basically.
- 28:17They're essentially self-serving, but so they'll go to whatever side suits them.
- 28:22So there's all sorts of double agents and double crossing going on throughout
- 28:25all of these films. and yes it can be a bit hard to keep track but you expect
- 28:29that and you would be disappointed if you didn't get that.
- 28:32Now, Hundley is, what's happening here is that all this data dumping is happening.
- 28:40They're saying that he's the one who set up the smallpox virus,
- 28:44that Ethan is Lark himself.
- 28:46Yes. And that he, you know, he's the one who got Nils, the guy who created the bombs and all.
- 28:52So, everything's kind of pointing, again, toward Ethan Hunt.
- 28:56And that's why Walker was brought on board, technically. Yeah.
- 29:00To keep an eye on him, obviously, by Sloane.
- 29:04Can I just say as well, there's a big clue here about the identity of the Henry
- 29:10Cavill character just before the proper hardcore French stuff where he passes a phone,
- 29:18Ethan's phone, back to Sloane.
- 29:21But don't forget, the phone was bussed up. It was smithed, and the phone he
- 29:25passes to Sloane is flawless. that there's no cracks on it.
- 29:31Oh, I don't remember that. Yeah, there is a meeting. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 29:39At the Eiffel Tower, actually, the meeting is at. We meet at the Eiffel Tower?
- 29:44Yeah, it's boss at the CIA.
- 29:47Oh, yeah, but he calls her when she's in front of the Eiffel Tower.
- 29:50Yes, yes. They don't meet. Okay, that's why I get confused. They do meet.
- 29:55He calls her and then they meet and he passes her the phone from,
- 30:00you know, the fight at the rave with Ethan.
- 30:03But the phone he passes her, there's no cracks on it.
- 30:07But the phone, the original, the real phone was smised to bits during the fight.
- 30:13Okay. What was the phone? What's the relevant of the phone? It has,
- 30:17I think, details of meetings. Oh.
- 30:20And all sorts. It's the phone. It's the new phone that he set up to make it
- 30:23look like it would keep from Ethan. Yes, yes. But it's not from Ethan. Yeah, exactly.
- 30:29But we do find out, but this is where we find out when Hunley's there,
- 30:35Hunley, Edwin is playing Walker now at this point. Yes.
- 30:39They all know that Henry Cavill is the baddie. Yes, because there's fuckwittery
- 30:45with the masks and stuff to catch him out.
- 30:48Yeah, which I really did enjoy. Yeah. When you got Solomon Lane behind the mask
- 30:53And it's nice Simon Pegg get more of this stuff And more field agent And so he,
- 31:01Realized he just confessed to No I've always liked Simon Pegg And actually he's
- 31:07really good In an episode of Doctor Who,
- 31:09He plays a villain in Doctor Who In an episode called The Long Game But anyway
- 31:14you were saying Just had to get that in there Yeah.
- 31:20He just ruined Mission Impossible.
- 31:24I'll never be the same. Yeah, but I do like that twist because,
- 31:26again, you're so into the fight and the arguments and Hundley doing this and
- 31:31blah, blah, all these characters kind of arguing and who's them all, blah, blah.
- 31:36It's kind of a magic trick. You're looking at one hand, but you're not looking
- 31:39at the other. Sleight of hand.
- 31:40And so, sleight of hand. So you kind of, you're trying to process all these
- 31:45little twists and turns all at once, And then the whole time,
- 31:49there was one little thing.
- 31:51It caused you to not catch the fact that Simon Pegg was in Solomon Lanes.
- 31:56He had his face on, basically. Had his face on, yeah. It was just clever.
- 32:00Oh, no, it was very well done. Yeah.
- 32:03Then you get the threats where Henry Cavill could have killed him, but he can't.
- 32:10He needs Ethan Hunt, but he just throws him a picture of Julia,
- 32:13his ex-wife, you know, played by Michelle Monaghan.
- 32:16Yeah. He says, just get me the plutonium and she'll be fine. Yeah. I won't kill her.
- 32:20And then we'll go back to Tom Cruise doing more mental stunts,
- 32:24which I fucking hate because, see, this free-falling, you know,
- 32:29this jumping off buildings and stuff. Again, it goes back to my fair height.
- 32:32That just wrecked me, you know? That whole sequence when...
- 32:37Peg has him tracked, and Peg is talking in Ethan's ear, go to left,
- 32:43take a left, take a right. This whole thing of him running is brilliant.
- 32:45And that's the famous stunt where he jumps. You see it in the film.
- 32:48Busts his ankle. Where he breaks his ankle.
- 32:50Yeah. And you actually see him getting up and hobbling.
- 32:53Yep. He actually kept running, and then they said cut. Yeah.
- 32:57And then they had to take some time off to finish the scene,
- 32:59but it goes to show his dedication.
- 33:02Oh, yeah. And it's just one guy just running. It's still so intense.
- 33:06And then he's in the offices. do I go left or right and all those people are like who the
- 33:09fuck are you I basically on the side of the office people
- 33:12who are just looking going what the fuck because see just stuff like that because
- 33:16again it goes back to you know Tom Cruise is doing this for real yes he'll have
- 33:20a harness on obviously that's later removed digitally but just that whole sort
- 33:25of jumping over buildings and then hanging off you know it's the heights thing
- 33:28it's the heights you know.
- 33:31But really he gets them he gets them almost there and he jumps on jumps on the
- 33:37elevator and that's where he tells them get me the plutonium and I'll let Julie
- 33:42live and the big finale here is Kashmir. Yeah.
- 33:46If there's one issue I did have with the film overall, I'd drop the Michelle
- 33:51Monaghan ex-wife character.
- 33:53Pointless. I just don't think it... I get what's there and it also sets up a
- 33:59bit of conflict there with Elsa and sort of eventually paves the way for her.
- 34:03But I just, it distracted a bit. I just wanted to see Tom Cruise being a mad
- 34:09bastard hanging off helicopters.
- 34:11Yeah, I thought it was kind of forced in there. I think they did it just to
- 34:14honor Michelle Monaghan's character.
- 34:15She never really got a good send-off, which I respect. Yeah.
- 34:18That's kind of going back to what I just said.
- 34:20Bringing back other characters, she never got their just due. You know what I mean?
- 34:24And I think that's why they did that. I thought the husband was a dork. Yeah, he was.
- 34:29I like Wes Bentley. I like Wes Bentley, who plays a character.
- 34:33But why is he here? yeah well well it's to give her
- 34:36a sort of resolution for her character at the very end where
- 34:40she's actually met a good man he's a doctor he'll
- 34:43keep her safe he's a nice guy you know what i
- 34:46mean she she has she even says herself in dialogue that um and because of you
- 34:51ethan i'm now i've eventually got to the point where i'm doing what i'm meant
- 34:55to be doing in this world and i've met a good man he's an absolute you know
- 34:59he's a bland character but he's kind of meant to be to give her that resolution, you know?
- 35:03I do think they bring, it does help that.
- 35:07She's useful. Yes. She helps Luther. She realizes that these guys have to look
- 35:13for these two, these two, these bombs. Yes.
- 35:17And they have to split up to do it.
- 35:20And when Ethan shows up and she sees her first time, she knows right away something's
- 35:25going on. Yeah. She sees Luther, who she knows.
- 35:28And so she ends up helping them. So at least they give her something to do.
- 35:33She helps Luther defuse the bomb.
- 35:35Yeah. And so, and I do love the whole thing. And this is Mission Impossible Cliché.
- 35:42Ethan's on his own, going to get the main bad guy, has to get the knock list,
- 35:47or he has to get the little button from the detonator, and they have to know
- 35:50that he's done that before they can cut these wires.
- 35:53There's a ticking bomb as well, which is the biggest film cliché of all.
- 35:57But you know what? But you know what, though?
- 36:00Usually it doesn't work in films. Sometimes, like you said, it's a cliché.
- 36:03But with this franchise, it works. It does because it's very well essentially directed, you know.
- 36:11Yes, you know, obviously again, you know, like the stunt, you know,
- 36:14in the back of your mind that, you know, they're gonna save the day.
- 36:17But there's proper tension here, even though it is the biggest film cliche of
- 36:21them all, the ticking bomb, you know, and it 100% works, especially here.
- 36:27Yeah, the finale. This, I love.
- 36:30I love, I did like the car park scene in Ghost Protocol, I thought that was kind of fun.
- 36:36But I'll tell you what, the best villain against Ethan Hunt is this whole helicopter sequence.
- 36:46We will get a retelling of this in the finale, but it'll be with planes.
- 36:51Right, yeah. But it's craftsmanship all around,
- 36:56from the guys who are actually flying the helicopters to the stuntmen to batshit
- 37:00crazy Tom to Henry Cavill,
- 37:03this whole sequence is so the
- 37:06best escapism i've seen in cinema a long time yeah yeah no no no it's it's it's
- 37:11great fun and um you know and you know we're talking about batshit crazy tom
- 37:15but batshit crazy henry here as well you know and again there's proper threat you know what i mean,
- 37:24he's genuinely intimidating you know due to his physical size
- 37:27and stuff and it's just and he's a proper badass
- 37:30you know you know yeah piggyback
- 37:34on that it's great the part where he just says fuck i'm just gonna crash the
- 37:37helicopters together yeah exactly so they crash and there's little things i
- 37:43love the practical mixed in with some of the old school i think there's a little
- 37:48there but i think it's i want to say their model copter copters get stuck on the cliffs and they're.
- 37:55And there's a great shot where, I believe it's a fuel line, bursts and it hits
- 38:00Henry Cavill on the face.
- 38:03And half his face is burnt, which is a great way of, like, Two-Face,
- 38:07kind of like what his character's like.
- 38:08Well, yes, but also he became more like a Bond villain as well,
- 38:11you know, the sort of, the scarred, evil sort of villain, you know, especially,
- 38:16you know, as they're doing their sort of final sort of fight and you see his
- 38:20face is all melted, basically, with this acid, you know, basically.
- 38:23You know it's uh but yeah but i do i do it i
- 38:26do think it it it's it's it's
- 38:29the way to show this this character is two-faced not
- 38:32to play on the two-face of batman but the idea is
- 38:35the same the concept is the same he's two faces yeah he's two faces yeah yeah
- 38:38double and yeah double agent and he's he's not coming back for a sequel no i
- 38:46just love this whole it reminds me of cliffhanger yeah the ending of cliffhanger
- 38:49and they're they're hanging out and there's only this one well it's a
- 38:53It's a literal cliffhanger, you know? Yeah, I'm kidding.
- 38:57So this hook is holding the copter, and then the hook gets unhooked and loses
- 39:04his grip, I guess you can say.
- 39:06And then the hook goes into Henry Cavill's face, chucks him down with the copter.
- 39:12Then you see his body hit the rocks, blab. Always dead.
- 39:18This was a good, proper death for a villain. Yep.
- 39:21And well-deserved. yeah oh no we get
- 39:24this come up ones you know you know and then some yeah
- 39:27i mean overall i just think this is this
- 39:30is proper popcorn blockbuster escapist
- 39:34fun done at it to its
- 39:37very pinnacle that's this particular film in the series yeah
- 39:41this is i ghost protocols god
- 39:44it's up because i love that building sandstorm sequence but i
- 39:48think fallout would be so far next to
- 39:51the original my favorite one yeah i mean it's
- 39:54the best action film i have seen in many many years
- 39:57and my regret is actually at the
- 40:00time not seeing it on the big screen oh yeah
- 40:04you gotta see on the big screen and let's end there with we'll
- 40:07piggyback on that one because guys go see
- 40:10the new mission impossible on the big screen i've seen the imax version i'm
- 40:14going to see another version you don't have to see the imax version to be fair
- 40:17but go get your asses out there and see it it's it's just amazing spectacle

- 40:27stuff like this yeah yeah you really do,
- 40:30But, yeah, another, you know, this franchise is going nowhere but up. It's fucking amazing.
- 40:36Kudos to McQuarrie and the team and Cruz and the team for continuing this franchise.
- 40:42And it doesn't get boring.
- 40:43They seem to find a way to, how do we top up that one? Well,
- 40:47we can't top up Dubai. I have an idea.
- 40:50Let me hang off a helicopter. Oh, okay.
- 40:53But kudos. Kudos to Tom Cruise. Yeah. Well done.
- 40:57All right, guys. Thanks for giving us this out. We are going to wrap up with
