- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Sarah Strickland.
- 0:06Speaker 1: NL Health Services is pulling out all the stops in
- 0:10Speaker 1: its efforts to recruit nurses and physicians, but serious challenges remain.
- 0:15Speaker 1: CEO Ron Johnson says some 300 nursing positions are still vacant,
- 0:20Speaker 1: but the health authority has seen success in recruiting local
- 0:23Speaker 1: nursing graduates.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Last year, I think we got 95% of them in
- 0:27Speaker 2: that range, close to 300 people. We're hoping to get
- 0:30Speaker 2: that percentage again this year. We have international recruitment strategies.
- 0:34Speaker 2: You know, we're pulling out all stops.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Healthcare recruitment is a top priority, says Johnson. The inability
- 0:40Speaker 1: to staff the new urgent care clinic in Mount Pearl
- 0:42Speaker 1: is what has prevented it from opening for its intended purpose.
- 0:46Speaker 2: We're still continuing to struggle with recruitment and retention in
- 0:49Speaker 2: targeted areas, like physicians in particular areas. We're still focused
- 0:53Speaker 2: on this. We're still trying. We have all stops pulled
- 0:56Speaker 2: out to recruit. But it is challenging. We're competing in
- 0:59Speaker 2: an international marketplace. There's only so much capacity in the province,
- 1:03Speaker 2: but we're focused on it. We're going to try our
- 1:05Speaker 2: hardest to get that place open.
- 1:07Speaker 1: The premier's office says it's looking forward to working with
- 1:10Speaker 1: the other Atlantic provinces on economic growth in the region,
- 1:13Speaker 1: but won't say specifically whether it supports the concept of
- 1:17Speaker 1: the four provinces forming a single economic unit. That was
- 1:21Speaker 1: the key recommendation of an Atlantic Economic Panel report released
- 1:25Speaker 1: last week. The report suggested that forming a single Atlantic
- 1:28Speaker 1: Canadian economy while maintaining separate provincial governments would help the
- 1:33Speaker 1: region compete globally. The premier's office says Newfoundland and Labrador
- 1:37Speaker 1: works with all Atlantic provinces on economic opportunities, especially through
- 1:42Speaker 1: the Council of Atlantic Premiers. There will always be unique
- 1:46Speaker 1: regional differences in economic opportunities based on resources and assets,
- 1:51Speaker 1: according to the premier's office, and government is reviewing the
- 1:54Speaker 1: report's observations. Passengers who helped avert disaster on board that
- 1:59Speaker 1: fly Dubai flight are now being recommended for awards in Israel.
- 2:04Speaker 1: The other hero, the plane's captain, who thwarted that vicious
- 2:08Speaker 1: mid-air attack by his co-pilot, is now being treated in
- 2:11Speaker 1: hospital in Saudi Arabia. ABC News foreign correspondent Tom Sophie
- 2:15Speaker 1: Burridge is in Tel Aviv.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Pilots and passengers hailed as heroes. after they thwarted a
- 2:21Speaker 3: cockpit attack on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv
- 2:23Speaker 3: with 174 people on board, including four Americans. You can
- 2:27Speaker 3: hear the panic on board when the passenger jet plunges.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Israel's prime minister now saying it's too early to say
- 2:33Speaker 3: whether this was a terror attack.
- 2:36Speaker 1: A MUN graduate has discovered a species new to science
- 2:39Speaker 1: among fossils preserved in Newfoundland rock dating back more than
- 2:43Speaker 1: 550 million years. Here's VOCM's Linda Swain.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Master of science student in paleobiology Helena Muirhead Hunt found
- 2:51Speaker 4: the fossils at a site in Upper Island Cove known
- 2:53Speaker 4: for its exceptional preservation of soft-bodied organisms. She says when
- 2:57Speaker 4: the first specimen was uncovered, they knew right away that
- 3:00Speaker 4: they were onto something really special. The fossils are close
- 3:03Speaker 4: relatives of a group of stem stentophores known in much
- 3:06Speaker 4: younger deposits in British Columbia. The new fossil has been
- 3:09Speaker 4: named Edrethina obdichia, borrowed from the two Beothuk words for
- 3:14Speaker 4: comb and beast.
- 3:15Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
