- 0:27Hey, you guys, welcome to episode 154 of the Shift
- 0:31podcast. I'm titling this episode
- 0:33following your desire. So I wanted to start out by
- 0:38saying about, well, we went on my trip for 12 days.
- 0:42It was about four or five days prior to my husband and my
- 0:48daughter leaving on a trip that had they have been planning for
- 0:50the last couple months to Australia and Fiji.
- 0:53I decided to go and I want to kind of like back up a little
- 0:58bit and tell you how I made that decision.
- 1:00But what I have been practicing in the last about year, year and
- 1:04a half is just really tapping into what do I desire slash what
- 1:09do I want? And really asking myself that
- 1:13question and making decisions from that.
- 1:15I feel like a lot of my life, I've made decisions and I've
- 1:19done things because it felt like the right choice or what I was
- 1:22supposed to be doing or maybe what society told me that I
- 1:25should be doing. And I just have really asked
- 1:29myself this question of, wait, what do I really desire?
- 1:32Even if it goes against the norm, even if I'm going to
- 1:35disappoint people, what is it that I want?
- 1:38And I've spent a lot of time asking myself that because I
- 1:42have been practicing it and taking action from that.
- 1:46I'm going to give you 3 examples of of how this is really shown
- 1:50up for me. And then also what's been the
- 1:52product of that, what some of my fears were going into it and
- 1:55what's been the product of it. And I hope by listening to this
- 1:58episode, you can just be thinking about us having a
- 2:01conversation across on the table from each other, maybe having
- 2:04lunch or sharing a beverage together, but just thinking
- 2:09about how you might be able to implement this for yourself.
- 2:13And so I want to start with the first example is of that.
- 2:17So I just got off this amazing trip in Fiji and Australia.
- 2:21My daughter who's 18 years old, she's getting ready to graduate
- 2:25high school. And this is kind of been on her
- 2:27bucket list to go to Australia. And we thought, or my husband
- 2:30and her planned anyway, that they would stop in Fiji first
- 2:33and then fly from Fiji to Australia after spending a
- 2:36couple days there. And the plan all along was for
- 2:40those two to go. And I was going to stay at home
- 2:42with our youngest. And I kind of was OK with that.
- 2:46And about four or five days before their trip, I was just
- 2:52like, wait, no, I want to go. I don't want to miss out.
- 2:56I want to have the memories and my daughter joked with me
- 2:59because she's she just got called to serve a foreign
- 3:02mission in South Korea for 18 months for our church.
- 3:06And she said, mom, it's just because you're going to miss me
- 3:08and you didn't want to miss making memories with me.
- 3:10And it was that, but I also just listened to the whisper and
- 3:15listening to the whisper for me was like, go and do this.
- 3:17You're never going to regret this time spending time with
- 3:20her. You might never have a trip with
- 3:22just you and her and your husband ever again.
- 3:24And so I decided to go and it was so amazing.
- 3:31I just had such a good time getting to know her more,
- 3:34spending time with just her. I don't know if if those of you
- 3:39listening who have kids, it's kind of virtually impossible,
- 3:42especially when you have multiple kids to spend that much
- 3:45alone time with them. And I have 4 kids and so she's
- 3:47also a twin. So spending time with just her
- 3:49was really amazing and something that I've never really got to
- 3:52do. So I am so glad that I got to
- 3:56go. But I know a lot of you guys are
- 3:58thinking about that trip you want to take or about that thing
- 4:03you want to do, or about that job you want to do, or about the
- 4:06career change you want to make. And you're feeling held back.
- 4:09And so this podcast episode is for you and following your
- 4:13desire. This is also something that I've
- 4:15been coaching a lot in my groups.
- 4:16Am I one-on-one about people hesitating to do that?
- 4:19I'm going to give you a couple examples of that today so you
- 4:22can see if you relate to any of them.
- 4:24But I want to give you another example, two more examples of
- 4:27kind of how I have followed my desire over the last year too.
- 4:31So if some of you guys have noticed, I have made a shift in
- 4:35my coaching programs to be doing a general life coaching now and
- 4:40my new program is called The Shift.
- 4:41It's a lifetime membership as a weekly coaching component with
- 4:44the community group chat and a member portal for you to watch
- 4:46the replays. And this is for anybody, not
- 4:50just healthcare workers and 1st responders, but anybody who
- 4:53wants to create really big things for themselves, create
- 4:55confidence and make any kind of shift in their life.
- 4:58And I titled it to the shift because I really do feel like
- 5:00all of us are always making ongoing intentional and non
- 5:04intentional shifts, whether we're trying to change careers,
- 5:07whether we're getting out of relationships, whether we're
- 5:10having kids, move out and starting a new period in our
- 5:13life. Or maybe it's something that you
- 5:15didn't intend on going through. You have a new medical, or a
- 5:18family has a new medical diagnosis, or you're taking care
- 5:22of a relative, or you're getting a divorce or you're ending a
- 5:24relationship. I just think we're constantly
- 5:27shifting in and out. And so now I'm doing general
- 5:30life coaching for anybody who wants to create big things and
- 5:34grow more confidence in their life.
- 5:35And the shift kind of originated by me starting to ask myself
- 5:40about a year ago, what is it that I really desire to coach
- 5:44on? And I've coached healthcare
- 5:46workers and 1st responders for so long.
- 5:48And flight was just something natural for me because I flew
- 5:50for seven years as a flight nurse.
- 5:52And so creating a program just felt really natural for me.
- 5:54It was a part of my identity. But now as I've left that about
- 5:58three years ago, retiring now from flight nursing and nursing
- 6:01in general, what I've desired and what I've wanted, change has
- 6:05changed. And I am noticing that I'm
- 6:08wanting to coach more people on everything because how you do
- 6:12one thing is how you do everything.
- 6:14And I'm wanting to support people and help them grow
- 6:17confidence in every single area of their life.
- 6:21And so the shift was something that originated by me just
- 6:26allowing myself to follow my desire.
- 6:29And it wasn't easy. It came with a lot of
- 6:32resistance, especially Healthcare is something that
- 6:35I've known the last 15 years. I've done it for so long.
- 6:38And so kind of to change identities of me being a coach
- 6:41that now just coach generally anybody was a big, big shift for
- 6:45me. Again, I'm going to give you a
- 6:46third example and then we're going to talk further into this
- 6:48about what this might look like or mean for you.
- 6:51And kind of like the voices that were going on in my head and the
- 6:53mindset drama that I had with each of these changes following
- 6:57my desire was also something that I really early on tuned
- 7:02into to shift from all my different careers.
- 7:04So if those of you guys have been following me for a while,
- 7:06you've heard me say that I went from broadcast journalism to
- 7:11banking, banking to nursing, nursing to flight nursing,
- 7:14flight nursing to life coaching. And I was able to make each of
- 7:18those different shifts in my career because I followed what I
- 7:23wanted. Now all of you guys know, or
- 7:25this might be you right now, where you're working in a job or
- 7:28a career where it doesn't feel fulfilling anymore, where you're
- 7:30going to it, you're clocking in and out.
- 7:32It feels a little bit like Groundhog Day, and you're
- 7:34feeling like you're just doing the job out of obligation, but
- 7:41not because you really want it and you know you're meant for
- 7:44something more. For me, I knew I didn't want to
- 7:47be stuck in that, and there were moments where I felt stuck in
- 7:50that. And so with each shift, it had
- 7:54to take a lot of courage for me to say this isn't what I meant
- 7:57to be doing. I want to find joy.
- 8:00I had to ask myself what do I really want?
- 8:05And then I had to be willing to hear silence for a while without
- 8:10man holding, getting myself to an answer without getting to
- 8:12result and just like tugging on finding it.
- 8:16I had to ask myself what do I really want and then allow
- 8:20silence for a little while. I had to give myself permission
- 8:24also to want what I want to ask myself, not what do, what does
- 8:28my family want? What do my parents want?
- 8:30What do my friends want? What do my kids want?
- 8:32What do I want? And I had to give myself full
- 8:34permission for that. The thought that I came up with
- 8:38that has moved me to make some of these big decisions.
- 8:41And my recent one of going on this trip is I want this.
- 8:46And for some of you, I know that that sounds so simple, but it's
- 8:49so much resistance in saying that or even asking yourself
- 8:54that. So I want to offer any of you
- 8:57guys who are listening, who might have resonated with doing
- 9:00things out of obligation or maybe doing a job or being stuck
- 9:04in a situation where you feel it's out of obligation or guilt.
- 9:07I want to offer for you to ask yourself, what is it?
- 9:10Do you really want? Give yourself full permission to
- 9:15ask yourself that and maybe have a little bit of silence until
- 9:18the answer comes. And when you know it comes, it
- 9:20will come. I've been coaching a lot of my
- 9:22clients lately on ending relationships, sending
- 9:25boundaries with family, or just saying no to work obligations.
- 9:30And the one reason that people don't want to do this, and I had
- 9:33a lot of mind drama with each of these decisions that I made too,
- 9:36is that you have to be willing to disappoint other people.
- 9:39Let people down, feel guilty when maybe you're doing
- 9:43something that they don't want you to be doing.
- 9:46Disappoint Co workers. When you decide you want to
- 9:48leave a job or that you're going to make a change, disappoint
- 9:51family. I mean, there were times where
- 9:55my family wasn't on board with each of the changes that I
- 9:57wanted to make, especially going from nursing to life coaching.
- 10:01They're like, what is this life coaching?
- 10:02And you're working a stable job as a flight nurse, making good
- 10:05money. You have insurance benefits now.
- 10:07You're not going to have insurance benefits anymore.
- 10:08You're going to start a business that you don't know if it's
- 10:11going to succeed or not. And so I had to have a lot of
- 10:14courage and hold belief in what I wanted was going to feel
- 10:19better than staying in a job out of obligation.
- 10:22And so you have to be willing to disappoint other people, let
- 10:26them down and feel guilty. And most people don't want to do
- 10:30this. As I'm coaching people, this is
- 10:31what's coming up, why I don't want to disappoint so and so.
- 10:33I don't want to feel lonely. I don't want to let them down.
- 10:36I don't want to feel guilty by moving departments because the
- 10:39one I'm working and I really like the people that I'm working
- 10:41with. And so if this is you, I want to
- 10:44offer you this feeling of not letting other people down and
- 10:48continuing to do something out of obligation is only hurting
- 10:52you. And it's actually more work and
- 10:55takes more energy than actually going for it and doing the thing
- 10:59and being willing to feel disappointment and guilt.
- 11:03We think it's going to take more work, but really it's not that
- 11:06it's going to take more work, it's just going to.
- 11:09It's just that we don't want to allow some of these hard
- 11:10emotions. But what's available in allowing
- 11:14these emotions on the other side of this is so much joy, so much
- 11:19peace and way more energy. And to get to that empowered
- 11:25place, you have to be willing to feel some of these emotions.
- 11:29Disappointment and letting people down, that's hard.
- 11:32You don't want to do that. But what's available on the
- 11:34other side is joy, peace, and lots of energy.
- 11:38And we think that it's going to be easier to not experience
- 11:42those just to stay in the job or stay in the relationship.
- 11:46And if those, if if that's any of you guys right now who are
- 11:49listening to this, you know, it's not easier.
- 11:51It's just taking from you. It's taking so much energy, so
- 11:54much mental capacity, looping over the same thoughts over and
- 11:57over again. And especially doing something
- 12:00that you don't want to be doing just to please someone else.
- 12:03Living a life that is true to me is available to you too.
- 12:09I can tell you now after practicing this over the last
- 12:13year, I love my life. I wake up and desire to do what
- 12:21I'm meant to be doing, and I'm living my life for me no longer
- 12:26for other people. I feel freedom, I feel love, I
- 12:30feel joy, I feel peace. I trust myself so much more in
- 12:34every decision that I'm making. And I want you to know that
- 12:37that's available to you too. We think it will take more
- 12:41energy, but really it's being willing to feel the hard
- 12:43emotions and say, hey, oh, this is what disappointment feels
- 12:48like. This is what guilt feels like
- 12:50and it's OK, I got me. I trust me.
- 12:53I trust my desire. I trust what I want and I trust
- 12:56that on the other side of this is more energy to give my
- 13:00family, my friends. I have more energy to give you
- 13:03guys as my clients. I have more energy in my
- 13:07business. I have a deep desire to coach on
- 13:09the topics that I'm coaching on. And this takes practice.
- 13:12This is take, this is taking a lot of practice for me over the
- 13:15last year. But now I've gotten to a
- 13:16quicker, quicker to be able to act on the things that I think
- 13:20are crazy. Like anybody would think it was
- 13:22crazy five days before planning a big trip to be like, oh, I
- 13:25want to go and I'm like, I'm going to make this happen.
- 13:27I'm going to figure it out. And I just want to offer for you
- 13:31practice. It's so simple.
- 13:33You're going to feel resistance to it.
- 13:35But just start with asking yourself, what do you really
- 13:38want? And for most you guys, you know
- 13:41what that is. You hear that whisper right now,
- 13:43and then give yourself permission to want what you
- 13:47want. Go on with this thought.
- 13:50I want this. Say it out loud.
- 13:53Tell yourself that and repeat it.
- 13:57Even when it feels crazy. Even when you decide to take the
- 13:59trip five days before. Because coming out on the other
- 14:03side of this feels so good. I have so much trust myself, so
- 14:07much joy again, so much peace. I want to offer this to you guys
- 14:12this week. And I also want to offer you, if
- 14:15you want help stepping into this, living the life that you

- 14:32That's it for this week, you guys.
