- 0:10You're here to be on the cocaine, to be on the spot
- 0:12there. What's up everybody?
- 0:39You're listening to yet another edition of Cocaine Willie, the
- 0:42official K State representative on the college huddle.
- 0:46I am your commissioner, Bob Trollsby, and as always, I'm
- 0:49joined by my Co host, the good chef Andre Napier, and we're
- 0:53missing that yet again tonight. But rest assured, he is alive
- 0:58and well and over there, we'll just say that.
- 1:02But we're excited to have him back eventually whenever he gets
- 1:05back from over there. Tonight, we're going to be doing
- 1:09just some thoughts on men's basketball, women's basketball,
- 1:13and we're going to be providing you with our Week 13 locks and
- 1:17an update on the standings there.
- 1:18But Chef off to a strong start on the men's hoop side, some
- 1:24would say. I'm happy with it.
- 1:26I mean, I know we've had some close calls and I know we, we
- 1:29kind of, we, we blew out the 1st 2 opponents and we thought, you
- 1:34know, maybe this will be a different, but we've been
- 1:36sweating the last two games. I will say that none more
- 1:40sweatier than the last one versus Tulsa.
- 1:43That was the sweatiest sweaty games I've ever sweated through.
- 1:48That was that was a wild ending too.
- 1:51Definitely You're sweating through that one.
- 1:53You got to take a shower before you go to bed.
- 1:55That that type of that type of a game where you're sweating that
- 1:58much profusely, if you will. Before we get into the episode,
- 2:01before we dive too too deeply into basketball, quick shout out
- 2:06to our sponsor, Auntie Maze Parlor, located at 616 N 12th

- 3:04other events they've got coming on for after Thanksgiving.
- 3:08But always good stuff going on over at Auntie Maze.
- 3:11They finally got those pavers installed on on 12th St. there.
- 3:15So it's a good time to stop by the parlor if you haven't been
- 3:18there lately. So check them out. 616 N 12th
- 3:22St. in the heart of Aggieville. Be sure to tell them cocaine
- 3:25will he sent you go grab one of our koozies, our Wildcat
- 3:27country. Let's ride koozies that are for
- 3:29sale there in the bar. So just tell your bartender,
- 3:32hey, I want one of those koozies.
- 3:34They will be able to hook you up.
- 3:36All right, so looking at looking at the four games that the men's
- 3:40team has played so far, UNC, Greensboro, Bellarmine, Cal and
- 3:44Tulsa day-to-day. Ames making his return to
- 3:48Bramwich Coliseum and didn't didn't do much in that first
- 3:52half second-half absolutely lit it up.
- 3:54Like absolutely lit it up. No, he he was everything that we
- 4:00thought we were going to get from the Chicago guard and he
- 4:02was, he was really fun. I thought he was.
- 4:06He definitely looked like he grew a little bit since we had
- 4:10him on. He's definitely developed into
- 4:13his full adult, you know, basketball frame and he was a
- 4:18bucket. He was a walking bucket.
- 4:20He had the confidence and he could he was shooting the ball,
- 4:24which was very interesting to see.
- 4:26I think he is a very, very, very good piece.
- 4:30He's bounced around or was he at Virginia this the previous
- 4:34season before that? So he's definitely, you know,
- 4:39finally, you know, maybe he's he's reached his potential as a
- 4:43college basketball player and he showed it.
- 4:46He was on full display in that second-half.
- 4:49It's very funny like these personal games that when they
- 4:54these former Tang players that finally make their return trip
- 4:57was a Cam Carter the season before that for LSU and he they
- 5:01going. To get another one this week
- 5:03with Uganda on Yenzo. Really.
- 5:07Is it Ugo? No, no, no, no, no.
- 5:09It's a chore chore. I think a chore chore is a
- 5:11Mississippi. State, no freaking way.
- 5:13A chore. Chore.
- 5:14Still playing college basketball.
- 5:16Oh my God, that would be that's going to be a funny return.
- 5:20That's in Kansas City, right? That is in Kansas City, yeah.
- 5:24Yeah, but it it has been, it has been a fun start to the
- 5:28basketball season. That Cal game was very similar
- 5:33to the Cal game the last time or I think we had a monster lead
- 5:39versus Cal and it just slowly withered away and it's like,
- 5:45where's the stops at? Where's the stops?
- 5:48Where's the stop? Are we going to get a stop with
- 5:50let's get a stop And it just never happened.
- 5:53And they luckily we do have a responsive offensive team.
- 5:59And, and the thing about it is, I mean, even if you can't get
- 6:03any of the other guys open, PJ Haggerty is kind of that, you
- 6:07know, bail out guy. It's very similar to what Kiante
- 6:11would do. Where like, OK, yeah, nobody's
- 6:14really getting anything done. Dump at the Kiante on the block
- 6:18and he'll he'll get a, you know, a mid range or he'll get to the
- 6:21basket somehow. This is just PJ Haggerty top of
- 6:26the top of the key. Give him a screen and he's going
- 6:29to get fouled or he's going to get a bucket.
- 6:31It's it's, it's a true blessing to have him on the team because
- 6:35he covers up a lot of inefficiencies on the team.
- 6:39And you saw that actually in this pre this last game versus
- 6:43Tulsa where you know, he gets his 3rd or 4th foul, maybe third
- 6:51foul with four minutes left in the game.
- 6:56And you know, we have to take him out.
- 6:58We're just giving him a little respite until that 4 minute
- 7:02media timeout and we squander. AI think it was a 8 point lead
- 7:06at that point. It was unfortunate because he's
- 7:09some. It's a 7 or 8 point lead.
- 7:12Yeah, I think maybe. He was 72 to 65.
- 7:16I think it was a 7 point lead. Right.
- 7:18And then, you know, he comes out of the game and we just have no
- 7:22offense for nothing to set up the offense, nobody to handle
- 7:27the ball to get it. No, even David Castillo is
- 7:30having a great start to the season.
- 7:32He has improved dramatically. Obviously, the competition
- 7:35isn't, you know, out of this world or anything like that, but
- 7:39he is, he's shown leaps and bounds from what he was last
- 7:44season. But PJ Haggerty is the engine of
- 7:47this offense and you need him out there.
- 7:50And I think we need to find a way to assist him with obviously
- 7:57on offense, but even on defense, making sure that he is not
- 8:01absolutely being targeted to get fouls because he is very sloppy
- 8:05on defense. He's a risk taker.
- 8:08And I don't I can appreciate that, but I can't have that now
- 8:14if it's one one of our three and D guys, if it's Abby Bashir,
- 8:18you're not very good at defense to begin with.
- 8:21Take some whatever you you don't guard anybody anyway.
- 8:24So take some chances. And if you get a foul, you get a
- 8:27foul. But PJ Haggard, we need you,
- 8:30brother. You, you can't be reaching in
- 8:33on, you know, on a play with 15 seconds on the shot clock, you
- 8:39know, and a little drive to the basket where, you know, just
- 8:42putting his hands up. He didn't want to actually shoot
- 8:44that ball anyway and you foul. So those are the things that I'm
- 8:48seeing from the season that I think can stretch out throughout
- 8:52the season. But I think All in all, I think
- 8:54I'm happy we're four. No, this is a good change of
- 8:58pace from what we've seen the last two seasons.
- 9:02It's it's been good. It's been good and and PJ, he's
- 9:06really just got to watch those kick outs too.
- 9:08I think that's the only other thing I'll say about his game is
- 9:11he's got to watch the kick outs because he he got what two of
- 9:14them called against him against. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:16I think that ref was really looking for it.
- 9:19It was a sermons that was Doug Sermons.
- 9:21Yeah, it's it's subtle, but he does do it.
- 9:25I think a lot of players do it, but it's just his.
- 9:28I think one of those like we talked to a college basketball
- 9:31referee on the pod and I think if you talk to these guys, be
- 9:36like, hey, I'm not kicking out. It's just how my legs flow.
- 9:40I'm not intentionally RIP Hamilton my leg 4 feet in the
- 9:45air to have you run into it. It's it's more just how my
- 9:49landing is. I think a lot of referees will
- 9:51swallow that or even give you the foul.
- 9:55But you know, Doug was on one that night and he was like, you
- 9:59got the first one. I called it, don't do it again.
- 10:02And I'm definitely calling it the second time.
- 10:04So, yeah, PJ is he's he's everything that we paid for.
- 10:11And I appreciate that. It's no offense to Coleman
- 10:14Hawkins, but you know, we paid a pretty penny for him and he
- 10:19wasn't nearly the impact that PJ's had already through four
- 10:22games. And that's that's what you get
- 10:24when you get an All American. It's what only the second ever
- 10:28All American to transfer during during the modern portal era.
- 10:33Coleman Hawkins was honorable mention big 10.
- 10:37That's that's great and all, but he's not an all American.
- 10:40He wasn't even all big 10 first team.
- 10:44So being able to get the pedigree of a guy like PJ
- 10:47Haggerty, you can see a stark difference between his impact
- 10:51that he's having so far this season and versus the impact
- 10:53that you saw from a guy like Coleman Hawkins.
- 10:56And I think it translates to his leadership too.
- 10:58You can tell that he is a vocal leader in that locker room on
- 11:01that bench and and he's not, you know, again, I, I don't want
- 11:07this to be a Barry Coleman Hawkins spot.
- 11:09I could do that all day every day.
- 11:11But Coleman wasn't that he, he was not a vocal leader.
- 11:15If anything, he, he felt like a bit more of a complainer type of
- 11:18type of person just based on the shark week comments and things
- 11:21like that. You don't have guys on this team
- 11:23going out on podcast complaining about their conditioning work.
- 11:27They're not complaining about the, the preseason programming.
- 11:30So it it, it does feel like everything that Tang said and
- 11:34that he was trying to build for this season of a team with
- 11:37better chemistry, a better culture, a better locker room,
- 11:41more cohesion, you're seeing a lot more of that.
- 11:44That's not to say there aren't still flaws on this team.
- 11:47There's still some inconsistencies with certain
- 11:49players. But just want to go through some
- 11:51of the some of the facts and figures here.
- 11:53We got five guys on the team right now averaging 10 or more
- 11:56per game, points per game. PJ, Nate Johnson, David Castillo
- 12:00has been you. You mentioned him.
- 12:02He's been a good pleasant surprise this season.
- 12:05I feel like he's finally living up to some of that blue chip
- 12:09pedigree that we were hoping we would be able to get out of him
- 12:12when we initially recruited him out of out of Oklahoma.
- 12:16The Crime Dog, Kamari McGriff, he's he's 1010 plus points per
- 12:20game. And then Abdi Bashir is, is also
- 12:23in that group. You've got PJ Nate and Abdi are
- 12:26the are the three guys that are averaging 25 or more minutes per
- 12:29game. So you're starting to see who
- 12:31maybe that big three rotation might be of of the top three
- 12:35guys from a minutes pregame perspective.
- 12:38Nate Johnson currently leading the team in multiple other
- 12:40categories. I feel like he's maybe been the
- 12:42most well-rounded player on the team so far. 7 rebounds per
- 12:46game, 28 total rebounds, a second in total assists.
- 12:50He's seven in steals and 3rd and three pointers made you.
- 12:54We've really seen a lot of flashes and him just being a
- 12:57really good all around player on a team that's lacking some
- 13:02defense. It's good to have a guy who's at
- 13:04least still getting some of those steals and and making his
- 13:08presence known defensively went when he's on the court.
- 13:11P JS currently leading in assists with 5.8 assists per
- 13:15game. Assist to turnover ratio 5.8 to
- 13:174.5 right now for PJA, little closer to 1:00 to 1:00 than you
- 13:22would like, but hopefully that's just early season jitters.
- 13:25He's starting to figure it out. The turnovers have been a
- 13:28problem. I would say though 15.3
- 13:31turnovers per game is what this team is averaging through four
- 13:34games against lower level to mid level competition which which I
- 13:39I would like to see that cleaned up.
- 13:41Then last last couple things I'll get to Doreen Buca didn't
- 13:45love him in the first game. Last couple of games he's looked
- 13:48better but averaging 1.8 blocks per game.
- 13:52Leading the team in blocks per game right now in general, the
- 13:56team shooting 54 percent, 73% from the line, 45% from 3.
- 14:02David Castillo leading the way with 61% from three and the team
- 14:07is averaging 93 1/2 points per game.
- 14:09Never thought, never thought I'd see the day.
- 14:11Never thought I'd see the day. No, I, I mean, this offense is
- 14:17way more explosive than I thought.
- 14:19I mean, I, I wrote down when we when we had that first game,
- 14:24when we were doing the live, the live that I had PJ at 19, NATA
- 14:3012, Abdi at 10. I had Andre at 11.
- 14:37You know, that's a little well under where I thought and I
- 14:40thought repeat would be at 9 or whatever his name is.
- 14:45I didn't expect Dave to be. I had him listed at 3 and he is
- 14:49a he has grown. He has grown into, you know what
- 14:54I expected him to be at this at this point in his career.
- 14:57He is actually maybe a little exceeding it from where I saw
- 15:01him the first time. Now I'm seeing him the second
- 15:03time. He's definitely growing.
- 15:06The thing about PJ is that that that the turnover or the
- 15:12assisted turnover ratio, it does look a little spooky from your
- 15:16lead guard to have a one to one. I will say he is a more, he's
- 15:23not going to be Marquis. So we need to get that out of
- 15:25our heads in terms of where we expect him to be the at the
- 15:30point guard position. He is definitely a wanna score
- 15:34first kind of guy and I can appreciate that.
- 15:38We need to get him off the ball sometimes and run some offense
- 15:42for him. But his best, but like I will
- 15:46say his best offense is get it at the top of the key.
- 15:50I take it, I'll take the ball up, we'll take the ball up, set
- 15:53me a screen. They started doing Scruff
- 15:56Mcgruff putting this booty out there at the top of the
- 15:59three-point line and let PJ pick a side and get to the rim.
- 16:05And I that offense will work. But I think versus better
- 16:09competition, they're not going to let you just walk that ball
- 16:12to the three-point line and do whatever you want.
- 16:14So that offense is going to have to, you know, evolve in that
- 16:20assisted turnover ratio. It's going to have to get a
- 16:22little bit more cleaned up because he's going to start
- 16:24going to have to start trusting his teammates to start scoring
- 16:27the ball more. And I think Nate can carry more
- 16:30of a load offensively. He's way more of a better
- 16:34athlete than I I thought that man can jump and get after the
- 16:39rim. I need him to start, you know,
- 16:42putting it on the rim instead of letting a three-point shooter
- 16:46swat it off the backboard. Don't need that anymore.
- 16:53God, I love this team, though. Defensively.
- 16:56It's just, it's going to take some time.
- 16:57Like you said, Buca, these Europeans are going to have to
- 17:01adjust to D1 power for college basketball, where you can't be
- 17:08lackadaisical and expect that you're just going to be able to.
- 17:12They were teaching Buca on the court.
- 17:14Like, listen, just put your hands up your 7 two.
- 17:17You don't have to swat down the ball.
- 17:20Try to swat it out of his hands. These guys are not going to make
- 17:23that shot contested with your hands straight up your 72.
- 17:27Just be there to contest and then be able to grab a rebound.
- 17:32I, I am happy with this team and I think Tang is working through
- 17:37who he wants out there. Elias, where does he fit in with
- 17:43his team? Because he's obviously Marcus
- 17:46Johnson, not going to touch the court.
- 17:49But Elias, for Pete, you've got to be able to be the mature one.
- 17:54He's like the oldest player on the team, for God's sakes.
- 17:56You got to be able to mature and be able to be out there and
- 18:00assist on defense because you are basically the second biggest
- 18:04player we have or third biggest player we have.
- 18:08And if Buca is, you know, doing whatever he does, I can't trust
- 18:13him as far as I can throw him. But I I can't trust Scruff
- 18:17Mcgruff where I need Eliza Repique or to whatever however
- 18:25you say it. Repiac.
- 18:27Repiac to do something I need him to.
- 18:30I need him to step up a little bit and I think this, yeah, take
- 18:33it another step once he gets going.
- 18:37I'm with you. Yeah.
- 18:39I'm, I'm with you on that. I, I think what my, my next
- 18:42question, my next point here is when you look at the team
- 18:45through four games, there's obviously a lot of areas that
- 18:48can be cleaned up, but they've still been able to win games,
- 18:51which I think says a lot about their resilience and, and
- 18:54ability to close things out. And, and I, you know, shout out
- 18:57to the KSO guys, Mason both made a great point that in the, in
- 19:01their instant reaction to the game, this team last year loses
- 19:05this game. If they're in the same situation
- 19:07against Tulsa, they're not going to have the resilience on last
- 19:12year's team to close that game out and find a way to win.
- 19:16And dude, you said it was a sweaty game.
- 19:19I mean, the, the final, the final 40 seconds of that game
- 19:23was the sweatiest I've been, even after a 30 mile bike ride.
- 19:27It's like a, dude, this is ridiculous.
- 19:29This is ridiculous. We're going to lose this game
- 19:31against Tulsa and CJ Jones fumbles it out of bound.
- 19:36It's just like, dude, what are what are we doing here?
- 19:38Why CJ? He also, he also dropped a dime
- 19:41to PJ Haggerty. Let's not, let's not papoo my
- 19:44boys. CJ.
- 19:45I think CJ has been playing. I think CJ has been playing
- 19:50somewhat good basketball and he's trusted, which is the crazy
- 19:53part. He is kind of the trusted one on
- 19:56the team when it comes down to the the last few possessions.
- 20:00He's going to be out there and I like it.
- 20:02I'm here for that CJ Jones crunch time player.
- 20:07I can't trust him as far as I can throw him.
- 20:09You said that about Buca. I'm saying that about CJI.
- 20:12Would I would trust Buca more than I trust CJ right now.
- 20:15That's just me, but I, I guess with the expectations for this
- 20:19team, we, we have a pretty good idea of who's at the top, who,
- 20:22who maybe our top three to top five players are so far through
- 20:25these four games. But but in general, just bigger
- 20:28picture, how have your expectations or, or what you
- 20:31feel like the ceiling for this team is?
- 20:34How has that changed for you through four games compared to
- 20:37what maybe you thought of the season?
- 20:40I'll tell you what I didn't like I said at the beginning of the
- 20:44season and and when we were doing the offseason stuff, I
- 20:47didn't have any expectations for this team.
- 20:49I was going to go in there. I'm going to.
- 20:51I'm still I don't even think I have any expectations for this
- 20:55team still. I think I have expectations for
- 20:58individual players, whether we can get wins or not.
- 21:01I think if things come together, I and the resolve of this team
- 21:07and we stay unified, things will take care of themselves because
- 21:11we still have some lower, lower tier opponents that we have to
- 21:14play. And we also have some monsters
- 21:17on. Well, I wouldn't say monsters,
- 21:19but we have some. We have some dogs on this.
- 21:21The schedule that if we can overcome those, then I will
- 21:26start having expectations of where I think we can go into Big
- 21:2912 play and all that because the Big 12 is not light at all this
- 21:34season. I think we've got some killers
- 21:36in this conference, but for in terms of this team, I think they
- 21:42are over performing. If I had set expectations but I
- 21:48didn't. So I I'm happy with what we have
- 21:51shown so far. I think the defense can get
- 21:54better and needs to get better if we want to win anything.
- 21:58And the offense is awesome. It's fun.
- 22:02It's it's not rolled the ball out there.
- 22:04I think Driscoll has made a hell of a difference for this team.
- 22:09It is not a plodding along offense.
- 22:12It is a fun running gun. Shoot the ball.
- 22:15There's a lot more motion, there's a lot more moving
- 22:18especially and then he can keep it simple.
- 22:21We keep it simple when you have a guy like PJ Haggerty, set a
- 22:25highball screen and let him get to work because he is a very
- 22:28smart ball player. He knows how to get to the rim
- 22:31and get fouled. And if the refs are, you know,
- 22:33feeling Froggy, he's going to he's going to take advantage of
- 22:37those referees and let that whistle be blown.
- 22:41I think going forward, I think we need, I think we're going to
- 22:47have to play some A level ball in Kansas City.
- 22:53And if we do that, then I will be on the record with what I
- 22:57expect from this team. All right, all right, I'm I'm
- 23:00going to go ahead and give what my prediction is just that after
- 23:04four games of the non conference and then the Big 12 conference
- 23:08record because it just did a quick reassessment.
- 23:11Maybe we'll do this throughout the season.
- 23:13I'm thinking we finished non conference 10 and three, and I'm
- 23:17thinking we finished conference play 9 and 9 for a 19 and 12
- 23:21overall record. You're solidly on the bubble,
- 23:24but I think you're on the correct side of the bubble.
- 23:28I think we lose at Creighton, I think we lose at Indiana, but I
- 23:33think we can win one game in Kansas City.
- 23:39I think we could beat a Mississippi State potentially
- 23:44you could win two games in Kansas City.
- 23:46I, I don't really know, but I, I currently have it slated to lose
- 23:491 of the games in Kansas City. So I've got us losing that
- 23:52losing at Creighton and losing at Indiana for 10 and three
- 23:55record overall. I think they can take care of
- 23:57business against Seton Hall. I think they can take care of
- 23:59business against the rest of the non cons slate and then the Big
- 24:0112. I mean, dude, the big 12's a
- 24:03gauntlet. We, I don't know if you've
- 24:04watched as much as I've watched some of these other non
- 24:06conference games. Dude, these teams are good.
- 24:09These teams are good. BYU is a wagon.
- 24:11Arizona's a wagon KU who knows they got kind of curb stop by by
- 24:16North Carolina in that one but haven't seen the score of the
- 24:19Duke game tonight as we're recording this but.
- 24:22They were, they were losing. It's been back and forth, but I
- 24:24think they did just finally lose.
- 24:28Yeah, they lost by 12, but it was closer than that.
- 24:32They and, and who knows what's going to go, what's happening
- 24:35with what's his name? Peterson, Yeah.
- 24:39That's weird. That's weird.
- 24:40Glad dodged. A bullet with.
- 24:41That one, I'm glad that we were one second or third.
- 24:43On his list. I think we did and.
- 24:45Duke. Duke is, they've got some studs
- 24:49on their team, too. The Duke is the big, the Big 12
- 24:53in general. I think we're going to have
- 24:55tomorrow. We've got a monster.
- 24:57We've got Yukon versus Arizona, which is absolutely nuts.
- 25:02Can't, TCU is taking some losses.
- 25:04I wasn't expecting them to be very good, but yeah, I I think
- 25:10the I think this season is going to be crazy in terms of where
- 25:15the Big 12's expectations week in and week out are going to be
- 25:19from a national perspective. It is going to be fun, though,
- 25:23where Kansas State slides into that because if we're that will
- 25:28and deal and high scoring kind of team, that could put a lot of
- 25:32teams on red alert. Because if, you know, if the
- 25:35defense is out of the window and we're scoring and they're
- 25:39scoring, games could get decided by who's the hottest.
- 25:44And who knows what that that could lead.
- 25:47That could lead to some upset wins that could lead to some bad
- 25:50losses. Who knows?
- 25:51But yeah, I I like what you're like where your head's at.
- 25:55I don't know anything about Creighton.
- 25:57Obviously you're the Creighton expert of this this bunch.
- 26:00Whenever match here, it's going to be a down year.
- 26:03Compared to the last, probably 3.
- 26:04Or four years, but they're. Still top 50 in Kenpom.
- 26:07So the four, the four non conference games against
- 26:11Mississippi State, potentially Nebraska if you play Nebraska IN
- 26:17and Creighton, those four teams are all in the top 50 in Kenpom.
- 26:20So those are going to be your toughest tests when it comes to
- 26:23the non conference slate. So I think if you can get, you
- 26:26know, two of those five that's still pretty solid.
- 26:30I would say like I would be happy with two of five of those.
- 26:33I would like. I would like.
- 26:34That as well. I mean, especially because a lot
- 26:372 of them are on the road. Two of them are on the road.
- 26:40Yeah, two of them are on the neutral.
- 26:42Yeah, neutral. I mean four of them.
- 26:43I mean, I guess technically four of them are on neutral or Rd.
- 26:48Rd. set. So that's going to be very that
- 26:53could help and it and it can't really hurt you that much either
- 26:57because I like the way we scheduled that.
- 26:58I like going on the road. Last time Kansas, Kansas State
- 27:03was in Indiana was that Butler game and I was there.
- 27:07Didn't really like that game at all.
- 27:09But you know that that did help that team throughout the season.
- 27:14I mean, we didn't perform very well throughout the season.
- 27:17But you know, just those Rd. tests, I think we went on a nice
- 27:20little stretch after that game. I think this team can grow and I
- 27:25like, like you said, it's not the pity party.
- 27:28Look at me, I made $2,000,000. I want to be the superstar and
- 27:33all this stuff around the team that was last year.
- 27:36A lot of this team seems that they're they're good with each
- 27:39other. They're every time somebody's on
- 27:42the deck, somebody's picking somebody up, they're huddling
- 27:45after every play. I like this team.
- 27:48I like this team in terms of a team, but the keyword is team
- 27:52and I like where we're at. So be prepared for me to make
- 27:57expectations and start to predict some things.
- 27:59So I if we do what we got to do, I'll be ready to do it.
- 28:03I'll be ready for my stamp on it.
- 28:06I'm here for it. Just looking at some of the some
- 28:10of the personnel, I guess let's just say most surprising player,
- 28:14least surprising player and who do you want to see more from?
- 28:18Most surprising is David Castillo.
- 28:21I am. I am through the roof, through
- 28:23the to the moon if you will, with David Castillo.
- 28:28I think he has been the bright spot.
- 28:31I think he's shown a lot of energy.
- 28:34He's probably the most hype in terms of cause P JS, you know, a
- 28:40very chill guy. Even when he gets fouled, he's
- 28:42not screaming, He's not yelling or anything like that.
- 28:45David Castillo is the biggest surprise.
- 28:49What was the other ones you said most surprising?
- 28:53Least surprising. And who do you want to see more
- 28:56development from? OK, least surprising.
- 28:58Is PJ Haggerty. I knew exactly what we were
- 29:01getting and we're getting it. So that's not a shot at PJ.
- 29:04That is the, the biggest compliment because I, I, I
- 29:08thought this is the guy. He is a dude and he is proving
- 29:11that to be very much the case. He is proved me right and I
- 29:17didn't. I didn't.
- 29:18He's not come up short at all. Who I want to see the most
- 29:24improvement from it. It's one of the Europeans.
- 29:27It it's either Kostich or it's Elias.
- 29:31Elias, whatever his name is, God Dang it.
- 29:34ER, my boy ER, but I think it needs to be Andre because
- 29:42another guy that can back up where Nate plays or Abdi plays
- 29:48that can still stretch the floor.
- 29:50It has to come on the defensive end for him.
- 29:52I think Tang, like we we brought up in the other episode, we're
- 29:57talking about football, Chris Kleiman getting on somebody we
- 30:01didn't know. He is very hard on Andre.
- 30:04Jerome Tang is very hard on Andre Kostich and I think he's
- 30:07just trying to get through to the young pup that this is a
- 30:10different level of basketball. You have to be in the right
- 30:14spot. You have to be doing the right
- 30:16things. Kostich can propel this team to
- 30:21different heights if he is a more dependable player because
- 30:26if you stardom, he's alongside Nate, he's alongside PJ, he's
- 30:32alongside McGriff, who is absolutely, I mean, maybe he's
- 30:38the most surprising because I I thought at the beginning, even
- 30:41in that first game, we. Weren't loving what he was
- 30:44doing. I was like, what?
- 30:44Is going on. I thought he was a different
- 30:46kind of player, but he's actually way more skilled with
- 30:51the ball in terms of his post moves.
- 30:55I thought he was kind of like just like jump ball, kind of
- 30:58dunk the ball kind of guy. He is very fluid with the ball
- 31:01on the block. But back to my point, Kostich
- 31:05needs to be that guy that can go out there and be with either one
- 31:09of the units where it's either the backups or, you know, the
- 31:14guys off the bench or in that starting rotation where we're
- 31:17trying to pour it on people early.
- 31:19So I think he can project and, and we, we had expectations for
- 31:23him and he needs to, we knew it was going to take a little bit
- 31:26of growing to get there. I think he's a little further
- 31:29out than I expected, but if he improves, this team is going to
- 31:34be tough. It's going to be fun, yeah.
- 31:37So Outlook. For the next three games, Cats
- 31:40play Mississippi State, the Bulldogs.
- 31:42The Achor Chore revenge game is happening on Thursday.
- 31:46That's going to be at 8:30 PM central time on Peacock in
- 31:50Kansas City at the T-Mobile Center.
- 31:52They are going to play the depending on if they're winner
- 31:56or loser. The winner of that game will
- 31:58play the winner of Nebraska versus New Mexico.
- 32:01So you could potentially get a revenge game against Hoiberg and
- 32:04Nebraska Ball who still have never won an NCAA tournament
- 32:08game in their hundred plus year history of having a men's
- 32:11basketball team. Don't want that to go unnoticed
- 32:14or or unmentioned. You will either play them or
- 32:18Richard Pitino and the New Mexico Lobos who are coming off
- 32:22of a loss to New Mexico State in state rival.
- 32:25So you'll play the winner or loser depending on if you were
- 32:28the winner or loser. And that consolation or
- 32:31championship game will be on Friday at either 6:00 or 8:30
- 32:35central time. The next game is also going to
- 32:38be Monday, which will happen or no Tuesday next Tuesday against
- 32:42Indiana. That's going to be in
- 32:43Bloomington. It's going to be at Assembly
- 32:45Hall. I don't know if we're going to
- 32:48maybe do a watch along for that game.
- 32:49I don't know if Matt will be back.
- 32:51We'll figure something out for it.
- 32:52We might be recording, we might do a preview.
- 32:54I don't really know what we're going to do for that, but we'll
- 32:56figure something out. But that game's going to be at
- 32:597:00 central time next Tuesday. So exciting stuff for K State
- 33:04men's basketball on the women's side, been a lot more of a mixed
- 33:07bag. We can get into this in as much
- 33:10detail or as little detail as you want to.
- 33:12Chef. I know it's later for you, but
- 33:14they're three and oh, they're four and two overall was pending
- 33:18the results of the game tonight against Troy.
- 33:20They've got losses to the Goobs, the Texas A&M Aggies 77 to 72
- 33:26this past weekend, and a loss to South Dakota, the Yoats 72 to
- 33:3371. Just a yucky, yucky, yucky
- 33:36outcome there. They do have wins against SMU 46
- 33:40to 44 with Gina Garcia getting that last second walk off layup
- 33:46to to win the win the game against the Ponies down in
- 33:49Dallas, 100 to 35 route of the Omaha Mavericks.
- 33:54University of no opportunity as as my father likes to call it,
- 33:57and Lamar, which is just a school.
- 34:00And I still I don't know if the Texas, I don't know where
- 34:02they're at 89 to 61. So they've either dominated
- 34:07their opponents or they've won or lost close games so far.
- 34:10There's not really been any in between.
- 34:12Got 7 women who are averaging 20 plus minutes a game.
- 34:15Got 2 scores, averaging 10 or more per game.
- 34:18Tearing sides and Nasia Clawson's.
- 34:21Nasia's averaging 8 1/2 rebounds per game.
- 34:24Gina Garcia may be the bigger surprise of of this group, for
- 34:28me at least. Averaging 4 and 4.4 assists per
- 34:32game. 8.8 points per game, 2.2 rebounds per game.
- 34:35A lot, A lot better all around than some of the other stats are
- 34:38for for pretty much everybody else.
- 34:41She also leads the team in turnovers, but generally pretty
- 34:43low compared to the men's team and what we usually see on the
- 34:47men's side. She's got 2.6 per game there, so
- 34:50kind of a 2 to one assist to turnover ratio almost.
- 34:54Brandy Harris leading in blocks with five total Terran sides,
- 34:58leading in steals with 91.8 per game, 45% shooting, 29% from
- 35:03373% from the charity stripe. And then Zella Arenas, currently
- 35:08second in total points on the season, but third in point
- 35:12average. Also just that side note for
- 35:15everybody, I compiled all these stats before the Troy game and
- 35:18they have not updated the stats yet as we're recording this for
- 35:21the season stuff. So take that with a grain of
- 35:23salt. But her scoring's been more
- 35:25inconsistent. It's been kind of lumpier. 18 in
- 35:28the first game, five in the next, 118 in the third game,
- 35:31068. So just kind of.
- 35:35Inconsistent is the. Best the best way to say that
- 35:38she was shut out in the South Dakota game, which I don't think
- 35:41anybody was really expecting for for her there.
- 35:44So similar question to the last one with the men expectations
- 35:48through these first five games. How have your expectations or I
- 35:52guess six games they've played six games now.
- 35:53How have your expectations or the ceiling for what you had for
- 35:57this team changed from prior to the season to now?
- 36:01I didn't have any. Expectations.
- 36:03I haven't done any research on the women's basketball team at
- 36:07all. This is nowhere near my level of
- 36:11expertise. I don't think I've watched a
- 36:12single game. I know I've watched the
- 36:14highlights of of that devastating loss to South
- 36:19Dakota. And then yeah, man, I mean, just
- 36:26I just saw the box score for or win versus Troy.
- 36:31You know, it's just just balanced.
- 36:34I mean, we were going what, 9 deep, 9 deep and everybody
- 36:39scored. So yeah, it's just I haven't I
- 36:43didn't have any expectations going in this season after
- 36:45losing a lot of pieces. Karen signs a dog.
- 36:48So I mean, maybe she can carry us, but but I don't think this
- 36:53team maybe maybe I'll be proven wrong, but it doesn't just
- 36:56doesn't seem like upfront by name recognition and by, you
- 37:00know, stature and by, you know, overall talent that this team is
- 37:05better than last year's. I don't know, though, maybe
- 37:08maybe they are, but they just going to take some time.
- 37:10But I don't have any expectations for this team.
- 37:14Or do are they are they top of the 12?
- 37:17Could they be top of the 12? Or is this?
- 37:21I don't think they're top of the. 12 I, I, I will say just
- 37:24looking at looking at the Troy game, you've got a lot more
- 37:28women who were, you know, 20 plus points in 20 plus minutes
- 37:32in that game. The entire starting 5 was over
- 37:3521 minutes. Jordan Spicer got a lot more
- 37:39production in that match up. If you had a double double with
- 37:4313 points and 10 rebounds, which is good to see that I think from
- 37:46her and, and showing off her pedigree there, which is good.
- 37:51Terran sides with 9, Brandy Herod with with 12 and Tess Heal
- 37:54with 11 out of that starting 5 and Nastya Clawson's nine off
- 37:59the bench and Mia Foy 9 off the bench and his elliness with
- 38:02eight off the bench as well. So I think it's a little bit
- 38:06more spread out. I just think, you know,
- 38:10tempering my expectations for the women's side.
- 38:13I think everybody pretty much did with some of the pieces that
- 38:16you lost. But I, I think it's exciting to
- 38:19see the future of this team and see who they who they have the
- 38:22opportunity to build around, being able to build around Gina
- 38:25Garcia and Jordan Spicer, Terrence Sides, obviously being
- 38:28a good returner piece there. I think you have those elements
- 38:32there. It's just a different game.
- 38:33It's it's going to be a different game than what we're
- 38:35used to on the women's side because we could, we could just
- 38:38play the feed Yoki game for quite a bit against against a
- 38:42lot of competition over the last six years when she was on the
- 38:45team and, and having sharp shooters like Serena and, and
- 38:48folks that, you know, like she could just control a game and
- 38:51take over a game in a lot of respects.
- 38:53Just going to be interesting to see that evolved.
- 38:55Maybe that could be Jordan Spicer.
- 38:57Maybe she could take over a game and and maybe we're starting to
- 39:00see some of that development happening with her, but just
- 39:04going to be going to be a little bit more of a mixed bag.
- 39:06We don't get into a lot more detail with it, but if you have
- 39:10any other thoughts, feel free to feel free to chime in.
- 39:14That's Gilbert. Arenas daughter, Yeah.
- 39:17And she was like God you're. Agent Zero, I didn't know that
- 39:20we had I I just put those two and two together.
- 39:23That's bad, you know bad case stating on my part, but I'm
- 39:27going to I'm going to check it out now I mean shout out to
- 39:30agent zero. I mean I got to look that up.
- 39:33I want to see if he's had any comments on this, but transfer
- 39:38from Louisville. I'll be interested to see this
- 39:41now now, now I'm. Tapped in.
- 39:43Now I'm tapped in, boys. I'm tapped in.
- 39:46Their next three games are against Green Bay, Columbia and
- 39:50the number 14 N Carolina Tar Heels.
- 39:52So couple of pods and then a tough test against North
- 39:56Carolina. So I think the positive is you,
- 39:58you at least get that Tar Heels game at home Last year or the
- 40:02year before that, I forget exactly when that was last year,
- 40:05the year before you had to make that road.
- 40:06I think it was last year was. When was when was?
- 40:10It was the same year that we were playing like Caitlin Clark
- 40:12every other week. That was two years ago.
- 40:15Then OK, that was two years ago. Then Yep.
- 40:17Yep. And I think we had Duke.
- 40:18We had Duke last year, if I remember right.
- 40:20So yeah, All right, without further ado, we're going to get
- 40:24to locks. Just get a recap.
- 40:26Last week, bad boy is the guy that happens to be overseas, so
- 40:32bad boys dodging bad boy duty. This week Matt went two and
- 40:36three. That brings his overall record
- 40:39to 33 and 22. So still an opportunity to close
- 40:42the gap there a little bit. He might go and five this week,
- 40:45we'll see, who knows. I was sexy.
- 40:49You and I were both 2nd place or first place, whatever.
- 40:52However we want to do that. Three and two for both of us
- 40:56last week. I won't go through the
- 40:58individual games where we're getting a little late here, but
- 41:0133 and 22 overall for Matt, 27 and 28 for me overall in second
- 41:05place and chef 23 and 32. It's rocking the rocking the
- 41:10palindrome, rocking the mirrored, mirrored record.
- 41:13They're getting into Week 13, so I'll through Matt's picks first
- 41:18because he's the bag boy and he's not here and we don't, we
- 41:22don't need to give him any airtime if he's not going to be
- 41:24here. For his Big 12 picks, he has
- 41:26Arizona -6 1/2 versus Baylor. He has TCU plus 1 1/2 at
- 41:31Houston, and he has Iowa State -1 1/2 versus KU.
- 41:34His national game is also what I have for my national game.
- 41:38I also have Georgia Tech -2 1/2 versus pit stinky, stinky pit
- 41:44sicko game. He has Fresno State -2 1/2
- 41:47versus Utah State for my picks. I have Utah -17 1/2 points
- 41:53versus K State. If you listen to our preview pot
- 41:55of that game, I am not optimistic that K State's going
- 41:58to keep it remotely competitive. So I think Utah's going to
- 42:02easily cover the 17 1/2 in that one.
- 42:05I've got Arizona also -6 1/2 versus Baylor.
- 42:10Yeah, I don't, I think Baylor's packing it in.
- 42:12I think Aranda's last stand has already happened.
- 42:15So I, I don't think we're going to see a whole lot more from
- 42:17those Baylor Bears. Arizona State is my next pick -7
- 42:221/2 at Colorado Boulder. Not an intimidating atmosphere
- 42:25this year. Not a very good team.
- 42:27Juju at quarterback is getting better through the weeks.
- 42:31But that's, that's just not a very game this year.
- 42:33So I expect them to pack it in. They're not going to be able to
- 42:36make a bowl this year. So give me give me the Sun
- 42:39Devils in that one national game.
- 42:41I also have Georgia Tech -2 1/2 versus Pitt.
- 42:44Just don't feel like Pitt is really any good at all.
- 42:47They lost to West Virginia, they lost to Notre Dame, who I also
- 42:50don't think is very good this year.
- 42:52I don't think they should be in the CFP picture.
- 42:54But that's a different conversation for a different
- 42:56day. So yeah, give me the give me the
- 42:59the Yellow jackets -2 1/2. And then my second, we have the
- 43:04Sam Houston State Bearcats, my brother in
- 43:23If you're going to watch this game, you, you don't like nice
- 43:28things. You, you just don't, you don't
- 43:31like very good things. So I'm going to take the
- 43:33Bearcats plus 6 1/2 Point Rd. Dogs at Middle Tennessee.
- 43:39I love all. I love those picks.
- 43:41I love those picks. I'm going to start my Big 12
- 43:45play. I'm going to go the line is
- 43:49opposite of what Matt had. Well, not opposite.
- 43:52I'm going to take the opposite side.
- 43:53I think this line is just spooky.
- 43:55Like it just doesn't make any sense.
- 43:57TCU is not very good. That just got throttled by BYU.
- 44:01They're only 1 1/2 point dogs on the road at Houston who's very
- 44:07competitive, who can control the ball.
- 44:09I, I don't see a way where Houston doesn't cover 1 1/2.
- 44:14I think they're outright winners obviously, and I don't think
- 44:16it's going to be a one point game.
- 44:18So give me Houston -1 1/2. I'm going to go very stinky Big
- 44:2412. I'm going to go UCF -14 1/2.
- 44:28I think they unloaded the clip at K State.
- 44:32I think they did everything in their power to try to get that
- 44:35dub versus a wounded animal in Kansas State who was whimpering
- 44:39on the ground and they couldn't muster up a touchdown.
- 44:43There's no way that they're going to go on the road after,
- 44:46you know, being so close yet so far away from victory.
- 44:50I think UCF covers the 14 1/2 very bad teams in Orlando, but
- 44:57they get it done. And then my next pick, it was a
- 45:01battle between the Kansas schools, which one I wanted to
- 45:04take. I don't trust that line has
- 45:07been, I think that lines move because I feel like it was 19
- 45:111/2 for Kansas State, but it might not have moved at all.
- 45:15But I'm going to go, I'm going to go the, I'm going to go the
- 45:20cyclones -4 four and a half versus KU.
- 45:27It's very fitting that Kansas needs, you know, wins where they
- 45:32can get them. They have the last two of their
- 45:36final two games versus Iowa State, who's thirsty to just,
- 45:40you know, keep winning. They're they're never going to
- 45:43give up under Matt Campbell and I think they will give up on
- 45:46their Lance live pole. And then they know that if they
- 45:49don't get this dub that they got Utah on the schedule who
- 45:54probably just throttled K State and they have to go the home
- 45:59stand in the bird cage versus Utah.
- 46:02They won't get that done. So they'll be ultimately
- 46:05defeated. They'll give their all this
- 46:07game. But I think Iowa State is going
- 46:09to suffocate them with a pillow and they'll cover that. 4 1/2 My
- 46:15national game, I'm going an old PAC 12 matchup.
- 46:18Oregon versus USCUSC, traveling to Austin is one of those games.
- 46:26I think the spreads 9 1/2, I don't know what USC is going to
- 46:30show up. I really don't.
- 46:33And I think that game versus Iowa might have uncovered
- 46:39something that they, you know, they can keep up with the
- 46:42physical teams in the country. I just don't know, going on the
- 46:47road to do that, to try to unlock that, to finally unleash
- 46:54it is what you want to do. I'm going to take Oregon -9 1/2.
- 46:59They're not. USC is not Indiana, and I don't
- 47:03think they're going to be able to get it done in Austin.
- 47:04I think Oregon is going to make sure that their home slate is
- 47:08clear the rest of the way. So give me the ducks -9 1/2.
- 47:14Now my do I go back to the Mac again?
- 47:18I think they might have actually played all their games, because
- 47:20I think they played them all today.
- 47:21No, they have. Do I do I take the final Mac
- 47:27game on Saturday? I feel like all the sick of if
- 47:30you haven't fit got your fill of maction before Saturday, why are
- 47:37you still watching the Mac games on a Saturday with all the other
- 47:40games They the Mac is for the weekdays, the Mac is for the
- 47:45weekdays. But I'm going to take that
- 47:47Saturday game and I'm just going to go back to Bend against Ball
- 47:52State. Ball State is stinky garbage.
- 47:55Give me Toledo -27 1/2. My God, that number is
- 48:03astronomical. Toledo stompsom.
- 48:07Midday, not midday. I guess that's a 2:00 PM game on
- 48:11ESPN Plus I'll be tuned in. Why not?
- 48:14I'll be tuned in to see the Rockets.
- 48:17An Elon Musk rocket up a up a Cardinal's butt in me 27 minus
- 48:26and I'm looking at. Ball State and it's a 27 1/2
- 48:29point spread, but they've won three games in the Max.
- 48:31Somehow they beat Kent State Akron in Ohio.
- 48:37That'll do it. That will that tells you
- 48:40everything you need to know. OU is actually, I feel like OU
- 48:43is pretty good. I don't know how they for how
- 48:46they ended up doing that. I mean they're they're they're
- 48:50there's two teams that are actually worse than them, I
- 48:52think. What is who's the Akron's pretty
- 48:55bad, but they're not Kent State's garbage.
- 48:58I don't understand but the. Ultimate worst.
- 49:01Team is UMass haven't won a game they're getting.
- 49:05There's no chance that they can stay in the they can't.
- 49:10They can't stay D1 forever. The FBS, there's no way they
- 49:14have to get sent back down. They have to get relegated.
- 49:17They have to. There's no way.
- 49:19They don't even have their stadium is like been under
- 49:22construction for like 6 years. They have a gravel parking lot.
- 49:26They have a gravel construction company right outside of the
- 49:29stadium. It's crazy.
- 49:33What are we doing, Minutemen? I don't understand why they're
- 49:37in the. Mac I I feel like they should be
- 49:39an independent nothing honestly. O and 11 O and seven and Mac
- 49:45play. I mean, if honestly, if you had
- 49:48told me they were in the Mac, I would have been like, what
- 49:51there's they're not actually in the Mac.
- 49:53I thought they were actually an independent.
- 49:55No, they're in the. Mac and they stank.
- 49:57They need brought back down, bring up, you know, hell, I'd
- 50:01bring up AD 3 Mountain Union School before I played.
- 50:04Have UMass out there. They stay smart.
- 50:08That would be smart. I don't think that's the worst
- 50:11thing that you could do. Have they all, have they always
- 50:14been in the Mac? No, no, this is.
- 50:16Maybe their second or first year, they're they're bad, man.
- 50:22They're bad. They lost a Bryant, dude.
- 50:27They lost a Bryant. My neighbor's name is Bryant,
- 50:31for God's sake. They lost him.
- 50:34They. Yeah, they, this is, no, this is
- 50:38their first year back in the Mac.
- 50:39So they were in the Mac from 2012 to 2015 and this is their
- 50:44first year back in the Mac. That's why I thought they were
- 50:46an independent because they're independent from 2016 to 2024.
- 50:49I guess I just missed. I guess I just missed.
- 50:52That footnote in the whole 2021 to 2024 realignment so that that
- 50:57UMass went to the Mac, these guys.
- 51:00Out man, they played three quarterbacks today, ran for
- 51:06somehow ran for 125 yards. They think there was also.
- 51:12I want to say there was a point in time, there was a point in
- 51:14time they were playing in Foxboro, that the school is in
- 51:17Amherst. Like that's halfway across the
- 51:21freaking state. I mean, it's just anyway, we
- 51:24don't have to get it. Tiny state.
- 51:25Tiny state. Yeah, I know, I know.
- 51:27But. Still, it's probably a 2 hour
- 51:28drive. It's I, I went to, I, I worked
- 51:31with a guy who went to, UM, at UMass Amherst.
- 51:34He's like, yeah, we used to go to our games at Foxborough and
- 51:38it's like you can't drink or anything because it's like
- 51:40you're going to have to drive 2 hours to get back home.
- 51:43Like it's just stupid that they did that anyway we could.
- 51:48We could go on, but that's going to do it for us today.
