- 2:21Speaker 2: Time listeners, you may recognize this face, this voice.
- 2:25Speaker 3: This is the mellow Brown.
- 2:28Speaker 2: You know, your neighborhood friendly spider man, But actually he
- 2:32Speaker 2: is your neighborhood friendly damn.
- 2:35Speaker 3: What are you not?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Co producer, producer, writer, engineer, a double O seven.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Like, Please let the world know who you are, mister
- 2:45Speaker 3: Mello Brown.
- 2:47Speaker 6: I'm gonna steal my favorite AKA from Utah Tiana and
- 2:51Speaker 6: go with AKA Flex Luthor. Yeah. Yeah, it's good to
- 2:58Speaker 6: be back on the ship. It's been and it's been
- 3:00Speaker 6: way too long since it's been since uh way when
- 3:03Speaker 6: the Origins came out, and I don't remember when that was.
- 3:08Speaker 3: He doesn't, he doesn't remember. He's he does so much.
- 3:10Speaker 2: He does not remember the greatness that he puts out
- 3:13Speaker 2: to the world. And we're actually gonna this whole discussion
- 3:16Speaker 2: today is gonna be about something incredibly good that I
- 3:20Speaker 2: personally am a huge fan of. I've read the book
- 3:23Speaker 2: a few times. Specifically, we're talking about Jimmy Hendricks Purple Haze,
- 3:28Speaker 2: written by DJ Benjamin and Mellow Brown, illustrated by the
- 3:35Speaker 2: icon Tom Mandrake. This is an exclusive for me because
- 3:40Speaker 2: I've been talking to ben about this for for ever
- 3:43Speaker 2: right many years at this point, and now to finally
- 3:46Speaker 2: be able to talk to you and also have him
- 3:49Speaker 2: sitting there so anytime.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You guys disagree, I get to see it in real time.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I cannot wait. I cannot wait to start out explain
- 4:01Speaker 2: to people what Jimmy Hendricks. Purple Hayes is what is it?
- 4:04Speaker 2: Not necessarily what it's about, but what is it?
- 4:08Speaker 5: Oh find me. I can let Mellow answer this question first.
- 4:14Speaker 6: So Jimmy, yeah, yeah, Jimmy Purple Hayes is more focusing
- 4:22Speaker 6: on in terms of people want to say, like a theme,
- 4:25Speaker 6: it's that point where, especially us, like being black folks
- 4:30Speaker 6: that work in entertainment, where you hit that point in
- 4:34Speaker 6: your in your life where you're just like I am like,
- 4:38Speaker 6: I'm happy to do like this commercial thing. I'm happy
- 4:40Speaker 6: to do the song and dance or a check, whether
- 4:44Speaker 6: that is like work or or getting getting a sponsor
- 4:48Speaker 6: anything like that. But there comes a point where you're
- 4:52Speaker 6: just like, I want to make some some dope part. Now,
- 4:57Speaker 6: there's a lot of people that won't back you up
- 4:58Speaker 6: when you do that, and how you can actually have
- 5:02Speaker 6: like your audience to be a little bit more mainstream,
- 5:05Speaker 6: a little bit more black and melow or anything like that,
- 5:08Speaker 6: but like they are in a position where they want
- 5:11Speaker 6: to see you be this one particular thing in the box.
- 5:14Speaker 6: And Jimmy Hendricks went back and I was being able
- 5:18Speaker 6: to tell the story of what happened when he broke
- 5:20Speaker 6: out of that and how people thought about him, but
- 5:24Speaker 6: the journey that he also went through in the process
- 5:26Speaker 6: and who he became at the other end of it
- 5:28Speaker 6: when he disbanded the Jimmy Hendrix experience, which was all
- 5:33Speaker 6: white band, and it went into what it is like,
- 5:36Speaker 6: you know, the last band that he ended up with,
- 5:38Speaker 6: which was like all black band, and how critics even
- 5:44Speaker 6: Rolling Stone, I'll never get over this when we found this,
- 5:47Speaker 6: Rolling Stone called him like a jangling coon.
- 5:51Speaker 3: In what year is this?
- 5:54Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 5:55Speaker 3: This was like in the amount of times it was.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I remember that one for that. Remember there was one
- 6:00Speaker 1: where they dogged the drumming on the album, and that
- 6:03Speaker 1: one was just like they were like, it's muddy and
- 6:06Speaker 1: all this stuff, and I'm like, like, machine Gun. The
- 6:09Speaker 1: drumming on machine Gun is just some of the best
- 6:11Speaker 1: drumming in rock history to me.
- 6:13Speaker 5: And yeah, like.
- 6:14Speaker 6: We pus Love said that that was the album that
- 6:18Speaker 6: like kind of like rocketed his career off. George Clinton
- 6:21Speaker 6: says like he changed his whole flow after hearing all that.
- 6:24Speaker 6: So many of like the best musicians in our culture
- 6:28Speaker 6: came from what happened in that album. And it's about
- 6:31Speaker 6: the risk that you have to take to get there,
- 6:33Speaker 6: because I know everybody feels that way no matter what
- 6:36Speaker 6: they're doing.
- 6:38Speaker 5: I know, saying the name of it, I guess we
- 6:41Speaker 5: can just say the band of.
- 6:42Speaker 2: G's because we can't say, well, you can also preface
- 6:46Speaker 2: it the name of the band is the band of Gypsies.
- 6:48Speaker 2: But as we know, gypsy is a slur romani slur,
- 6:52Speaker 2: so we don't use that term anymore.
- 6:54Speaker 3: But you're referring to a historical name of a group,
- 6:57Speaker 3: so that's fine.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Yeah, that's is true.
- 6:59Speaker 2: But we do recognize the slur in it and the
- 7:02Speaker 2: fact that it's not something that we used. Wiley, Ben,
- 7:06Speaker 2: did you want to add to anything, Melo mentioned the
- 7:08Speaker 2: only thing I want?
- 7:09Speaker 1: Well, I mean, there's a lot to add to it.
- 7:11Speaker 1: That's why I always I was happy to have him
- 7:13Speaker 1: describe it because it's so difficult to describe it like
- 7:16Speaker 1: an elevator pitch, because it's all of that. And then
- 7:19Speaker 1: it's also this sci fi space opera that also deals
- 7:24Speaker 1: a lot with music and the power of music, and
- 7:28Speaker 1: like Romelo talked about the whole journey that the Hindrix
- 7:32Speaker 1: character goes on, there's also a few other characters like
- 7:36Speaker 1: Vesper and Raino, who go on their own journeys, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: their journeys influencing effect Hendrix, and because of that, he
- 7:44Speaker 1: has to recognize with other themes that are happening in
- 7:47Speaker 1: the world, like this tyrannical intergalactic fascist empire that he
- 7:52Speaker 1: has to eventually recognize he needs to fight back against
- 7:55Speaker 1: as well.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Gotcha.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I know people walking off the street they see this
- 8:00Speaker 2: book in the window. They read the title and they
- 8:04Speaker 2: read the writers, and they're like, who the hell are
- 8:05Speaker 2: these guys?
- 8:08Speaker 1: See this guy right here? That guy they might you know,
- 8:11Speaker 1: know some of his other works.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean people, I got to be real.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Just buy my book first.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yeah, like my heralding aside in the beginning, like anyone
- 8:27Speaker 2: watching this, they might even looking at me like, who
- 8:28Speaker 2: the hell is she? But like, when it comes to
- 8:30Speaker 2: the context of this book, what makes either of you
- 8:33Speaker 2: or both of you uniquely qualified to tap into this project?
- 8:37Speaker 6: Mhm oh I don't think.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Really, no, was it?
- 8:48Speaker 6: Uh? We came into it because of the quality of
- 8:52Speaker 6: our writing and being able to kind of like discover
- 8:55Speaker 6: so much about Jimmy, and the process was like the
- 8:58Speaker 6: healthiest way we could come into It's one of those
- 9:02Speaker 6: things where it's like you like, if you tweet that
- 9:06Speaker 6: you want to write from Marvel to Marvel, there's a
- 9:10Speaker 6: good chance you'll never write for Marvel. But if they
- 9:14Speaker 6: think that, like your interest is somewhere else, that's what
- 9:17Speaker 6: they're looking for. They look at for someone a little
- 9:19Speaker 6: bit on the outside that can bring the outside indoors
- 9:22Speaker 6: so it isn't contaminated by the things that have come before.
- 9:26Speaker 6: In the conversation about Jimmy, it was kind of similar
- 9:28Speaker 6: because we didn't know a ton about him, but as
- 9:32Speaker 6: we started to dig deeper into who he actually was
- 9:36Speaker 6: and how like rebellious he actually was, and how you know,
- 9:39Speaker 6: like he wasn't all piece and love that like he
- 9:42Speaker 6: he was. He was a was a it was a
- 9:44Speaker 6: tough dude and like and he was dealing with an
- 9:48Speaker 6: identity crisis at such a like at a time that's
- 9:52Speaker 6: so early in my mind that it's similar to what
- 9:56Speaker 6: so many black artists go through right now whenever they
- 9:58Speaker 6: just want to change a little bit, want to be
- 10:01Speaker 6: something unique. Everyone wanted it to just report it in
- 10:05Speaker 6: a way that kind of like fit his identity and
- 10:07Speaker 6: all his nerdiness and how much he loved sci fi,
- 10:10Speaker 6: fult novels and things like that it put us in
- 10:14Speaker 6: the right place to kind of like tap into a
- 10:16Speaker 6: side that no one really talks about. And I think
- 10:18Speaker 6: that was a good thing that we came in it
- 10:20Speaker 6: from from that angle.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think to add on to that, it's
- 10:26Speaker 1: kind of the same thing that would happen with me
- 10:28Speaker 1: and Mellow when we both worked on American Gods, and
- 10:31Speaker 1: with this, it was one of the same things.
- 10:33Speaker 5: I remember with this.
- 10:35Speaker 1: When they told me that tom Man Drake was going
- 10:37Speaker 1: to be the artist on it, I was like all,
- 10:39Speaker 1: R yeah, whatever, cool, And you know, I didn't have
- 10:42Speaker 1: any prior knowledge, and it was the same thing like
- 10:44Speaker 1: on American Gods. I really didn't look at anyone or
- 10:48Speaker 1: or the project as above me. I just looked at
- 10:51Speaker 1: it as like, Oh, okay, they're talking about this. I
- 10:54Speaker 1: know I can talk about that. And with this, when
- 10:57Speaker 1: as soon as Mellow came to me, I was like, oh,
- 10:58Speaker 1: we're we can talk about black music. Well, I've got
- 11:01Speaker 1: this and this and this I've been wanting to say
- 11:03Speaker 1: about black music and this is a perfect opportunity to
- 11:06Speaker 1: talk about it through Hendrix. And just like Mellow, I
- 11:09Speaker 1: wasn't the I have a lot of relation with Hindrix
- 11:13Speaker 1: and the album in particular that we were talking about.
- 11:15Speaker 5: It goes back to me.
- 11:16Speaker 1: So I'd known this album for a long time, but
- 11:18Speaker 1: I wasn't a huge, overly dedicated fan of his. You know,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I grew up as like Prince being my guitar god,
- 11:28Speaker 1: and I just looked at Hindrids as like number one
- 11:30Speaker 1: and number two of Prince, and I really don't care
- 11:33Speaker 1: which one, but I just felt like both of them
- 11:34Speaker 1: needed to be recognized, and it was just that thing
- 11:38Speaker 1: that I know, Mello, we both wanted to do this too,
- 11:40Speaker 1: and especially once we got into the research about representing
- 11:44Speaker 1: Hindrix's blackness and how much of a black man he
- 11:47Speaker 1: was and how much he wanted that in his music
- 11:50Speaker 1: and in his personnel and everything of that nature. So
- 11:53Speaker 1: I just think we came into it with just a,
- 11:55Speaker 1: like Mello said, the outsider view of it.
- 11:57Speaker 2: All I see, I see, And you know, Ben, I
- 12:01Speaker 2: was talking to you during your signing about who Jimmy
- 12:05Speaker 2: is and was and what he's and how people perceive him,
- 12:08Speaker 2: and I personally, I've never heard him really mentioned in
- 12:12Speaker 2: like the pantheon of black music gods or the idea
- 12:17Speaker 2: of like I mean, if you're talking about rock music
- 12:21Speaker 2: just in general, and then like really, to be honest,
- 12:23Speaker 2: white people, then they'll mention him, but then it's always
- 12:26Speaker 2: in the lens of he's this like drugged out guy
- 12:30Speaker 2: that's like peace man and all this other stuff.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Like very very shaggy Scooby Doo.
- 12:35Speaker 2: And I'm curious though, like you said that, during the process,
- 12:39Speaker 2: you did learn about him, but how much did what
- 12:44Speaker 2: you learn conflict with your own personal views of who
- 12:46Speaker 2: you thought he was.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I don't think it conflicted that much of mine, because
- 12:51Speaker 1: I kind of already knew that he was this rebellious dude.
- 12:54Speaker 6: You know.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I'd heard Machine Gun, so I knew what Machine Gun
- 12:58Speaker 1: was about, and I knew what that album was about.
- 12:59Speaker 1: So I already was like, oh, Jimmy didn't give no fucks,
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know. That was already my view of him. And
- 13:06Speaker 1: I knew what him playing the National Anthem meant at Woodstock,
- 13:11Speaker 1: like the way he played it and the way, especially
- 13:14Speaker 1: in nineteen whatever, to twist those notes up like that
- 13:19Speaker 1: and do that to a song in itself is a
- 13:23Speaker 1: massive message, you know, And so I already knew what
- 13:26Speaker 1: he was about, you know, because you just don't do
- 13:28Speaker 1: things like that.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Especially back then, you do not do that.
- 13:32Speaker 1: You know, this is before Roseanne and the rest of
- 13:34Speaker 1: the people ruining the national anthem at various baseball games
- 13:37Speaker 1: and all that. Back then, you say the national anthem,
- 13:39Speaker 1: you saying that shit straight. You ain't do nothing to it.
- 13:42Speaker 1: And this man went up there and rocked it out
- 13:44Speaker 1: and put pain and blues and everything else into it
- 13:48Speaker 1: on a national, worldwide stage. So you already already knew
- 13:52Speaker 1: kind of what he was about. I ain't know how
- 13:55Speaker 1: much it was about, though, I'll say that I ain't
- 13:57Speaker 1: know how you know rebellious.
- 13:59Speaker 6: He was, Yeah, I didn't. I didn't know he was
- 14:03Speaker 6: the kind of guy that well a lot.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Did you see yourself and him?
- 14:14Speaker 6: Yeah, Actually it scared me a little bit. It especially
- 14:18Speaker 6: scared me because of what I was doing at the time,
- 14:20Speaker 6: and like, I guess I'll get the end of that
- 14:23Speaker 6: a little bit. So, so when we started working on it,
- 14:26Speaker 6: I was on Station nineteen, which is a predominantly black
- 14:33Speaker 6: and Latino show, but it is mainly existed within like
- 14:43Speaker 6: like like a more dominantly white audience because it gets
- 14:46Speaker 6: a lot of Grey's anatomy folks, And so you are
- 14:51Speaker 6: still every day. When you're writing, you can write like
- 14:55Speaker 6: some of the most intense, action packed because it's a
- 14:58Speaker 6: hard show to make, you like, you gotta make a
- 15:01Speaker 6: fast and furious episode of television and then keep it
- 15:07Speaker 6: within budget. But then at the same time as all
- 15:09Speaker 6: that is happening, you're still doing the soap opera raised anatomy,
- 15:13Speaker 6: and you're like juggling all this stuff. But what that
- 15:17Speaker 6: always ends up is some of your stories get stunted
- 15:20Speaker 6: because in the middle of it you are explaining the
- 15:23Speaker 6: point of view of your characters who are minorities instead
- 15:26Speaker 6: of talking directly to minorities, And so the actors feel
- 15:31Speaker 6: that they're like, man, this is this is wild to
- 15:34Speaker 6: do like week the week. The the other writers feel it,
- 15:38Speaker 6: the producers feel it, the crew feels it, and it's
- 15:41Speaker 6: one of those things where it's just like it's a
- 15:44Speaker 6: it's a weird experience because we're all making like good money,
- 15:47Speaker 6: we got steady jobs. We're all very thankful, but at
- 15:50Speaker 6: the same time we're like, this can't be just it
- 15:54Speaker 6: can't be just this. And when we got to like
- 15:59Speaker 6: really searching Jimmy and he basically was going through something
- 16:03Speaker 6: really similar and he also had like an extremely rebellious
- 16:07Speaker 6: stage and anti military things. Well not a face. It's
- 16:12Speaker 6: part of him, is part of his DNA, is part
- 16:13Speaker 6: of up and down who he is. But like and
- 16:16Speaker 6: like how he went away from comfort into being something
- 16:21Speaker 6: so much more wild and so much more daring and
- 16:24Speaker 6: willing to kind of like take that extra leap to
- 16:29Speaker 6: be like I am known as guitar smash man, and
- 16:33Speaker 6: what I'm actually trying to do is tell like, you know,
- 16:36Speaker 6: like yo, I don't want the war to go on,
- 16:38Speaker 6: like capitalism it's got hold on all of us. And
- 16:41Speaker 6: they're just like, but smash the guitar, you know, just
- 16:45Speaker 6: do yeah, And he smashed the guitar here on the stage.
- 16:49Speaker 6: You don't got a guitar anymore. And so like that's
- 16:53Speaker 6: kind of like what he was like, No, that's and
- 16:55Speaker 6: he's like, I am more than that. I am an artist.
- 16:57Speaker 6: I am the best at what I do, and at
- 16:59Speaker 6: the same time, I can challenge myself to be even
- 17:01Speaker 6: better than who I am now and not make the
- 17:03Speaker 6: music that they're expecting. I could be something dope. I
- 17:06Speaker 6: could be amazing, and I don't have to be held
- 17:10Speaker 6: back by the parameters of money. I don't have to
- 17:14Speaker 6: be just this thing that they think I am every day,
- 17:18Speaker 6: I could be my own thing and I can speak
- 17:21Speaker 6: directly to my people and so being able to write
- 17:25Speaker 6: that journey and how that feels that that I was like, Yo,
- 17:29Speaker 6: let's let's get it.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm curious because I do know just a little bit,
- 17:36Speaker 2: and I'm going towards what you just mentioned or something
- 17:39Speaker 2: you just mentioned. You will have many people and there's
- 17:42Speaker 2: different spectrums of revolutionaries, if you will, right, and where
- 17:45Speaker 2: they are in their life and things like that. And
- 17:47Speaker 2: it's interesting when you happen upon someone who, for example,
- 17:50Speaker 2: has the money to not have money be a thing, right,
- 17:55Speaker 2: Like money is not there. You know, money is not
- 17:59Speaker 2: the issue for me. I can go ahead and you
- 18:02Speaker 2: know say fuck you, fuck you money.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Right?
- 18:05Speaker 2: What about people who are in the grind and the
- 18:07Speaker 2: struggle in the mud and they are doing for their
- 18:10Speaker 2: people and they don't have that they don't have those resources, right,
- 18:13Speaker 2: Like are they are they wrong for you know, not
- 18:19Speaker 2: going towards the money knowing that they need it or
- 18:23Speaker 2: like I know a lot of people see people in
- 18:25Speaker 2: spaces where if they have the money, they have the acts.
- 18:28Speaker 2: They're like it's easy for you to talk of revolution
- 18:30Speaker 2: and all this other stuff because you don't got to
- 18:31Speaker 2: worry about nothing else.
- 18:33Speaker 6: M I think it's uh right, I personally am not
- 18:40Speaker 6: going to knock on someone for getting the check as
- 18:42Speaker 6: long as they are not harming anyone else, you know, like,
- 18:46Speaker 6: as long as they're not like kind ofly's arising it
- 18:48Speaker 6: where she's like doing something that like chills but directly
- 18:54Speaker 6: is involved with killings.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:56Speaker 6: And if you are in a position where it's just like,
- 19:01Speaker 6: I know what my ultimate goal is and I got
- 19:05Speaker 6: to do a little dance for like a couple of
- 19:07Speaker 6: years and I'll get there as long as you know,
- 19:12Speaker 6: to lean towards that ultimate goal and you're not harming anyone,
- 19:16Speaker 6: and also you're not closing doors behind You're not like
- 19:19Speaker 6: like you're not losing it where it's just like no,
- 19:23Speaker 6: I'm my dad, bro, and you know, like and then
- 19:24Speaker 6: it's just like now they can't hire another one and
- 19:30Speaker 6: like it. But you have that pressure on you and
- 19:32Speaker 6: like it because of that level of pressure too. It's
- 19:36Speaker 6: one of those things where it's just like you start
- 19:38Speaker 6: to feel like all the walls are starting to close
- 19:41Speaker 6: and you get into like like this mental place and
- 19:44Speaker 6: everything like that so I know how that is. I
- 19:49Speaker 6: have had to take jobs I didn't want, and like
- 19:52Speaker 6: I got folks that I send money to. That's why
- 19:54Speaker 6: I ain't rich. But at the same time, it's I
- 20:01Speaker 6: know that if I spend my money the right way,
- 20:04Speaker 6: I could do things that like others, I know, I
- 20:06Speaker 6: could work on projects that where I can invite people
- 20:09Speaker 6: I care about and and make something special I could
- 20:13Speaker 6: put out into the world and I can tell people like, yo,
- 20:17Speaker 6: check this out because it's dope, you know, like or
- 20:21Speaker 6: if I've congratulated from like the very commercial thing I
- 20:23Speaker 6: did and be like, thank you very much, also please replay,
- 20:27Speaker 6: you know, and it's one for them, one for me.
- 20:33Speaker 6: But at the same time, I will never do a
- 20:35Speaker 6: one for them that it is bad for us.
- 20:39Speaker 3: M That's true.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, to add on to that, like my thing you
- 20:45Speaker 1: know in Time Town, I've always told you and I
- 20:47Speaker 1: you know, pretty much forced you to watch it with
- 20:50Speaker 1: Hollywood Shuffle, and I just always go by that, you
- 20:53Speaker 1: know mantras there's always work at the post office. And
- 20:56Speaker 1: what that means is, you know, I'm never going to
- 20:58Speaker 1: do anything like Mello said, that's gonna actively harm us.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And I always tell people that, like the whole revolution thing,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I don't, you know. It's like my favorite quote is,
- 21:10Speaker 1: if you're gonna speak a revolution, you got to be
- 21:12Speaker 1: ready to eat rats to survive.
- 21:14Speaker 5: And I'm not. Never in my life had been really
- 21:16Speaker 5: ready to eat rats to survive.
- 21:18Speaker 1: So I've always been like and then my other thing
- 21:22Speaker 1: is I've you know, knowing the history of this country,
- 21:25Speaker 1: they will murder black revolutionaries very quickly. And I wasn't
- 21:29Speaker 1: really ready to die at a young age, you know.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I saw too many of the people that did that
- 21:34Speaker 1: die at a young age. And so I've always been
- 21:37Speaker 1: the one to do things, you know, as I wouldn't
- 21:41Speaker 1: say slowly, but gradually, more so than trying to set
- 21:45Speaker 1: something off right now. So I don't knock anyone for
- 21:48Speaker 1: you know, working and doing along with this wicked ass
- 21:51Speaker 1: system that we live in, because you know, you got
- 21:54Speaker 1: to survive somehow.
- 21:55Speaker 5: It's like mellow.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So as long as you're not doing anything that's actively
- 21:58Speaker 1: harming somebody, then you know, yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 3: And yeah, go ahead.
- 22:02Speaker 6: I was just gonna say, I didn't want to add like, yeah,
- 22:06Speaker 6: we do have the ability at this point to create
- 22:09Speaker 6: structures for other people like us. The one thing I
- 22:15Speaker 6: think it is so dope about y'all y'all have come from,
- 22:18Speaker 6: and like this is almost me dipping into like I
- 22:20Speaker 6: want to do an interview about y'all at this point
- 22:22Speaker 6: for like here, for like over ten years now mm hm,
- 22:27Speaker 6: the entire landscape that y'all working has a completely shift
- 22:30Speaker 6: that's changed. It's turned into this whole other thing where
- 22:33Speaker 6: it's like you have just a lot of more like
- 22:37Speaker 6: weird dude bros in here who are like fighting to
- 22:44Speaker 6: get that level of being like we are culture in
- 22:48Speaker 6: the way that like y'all have dominated for so long
- 22:52Speaker 6: and thank you all of all all the things that
- 22:56Speaker 6: they do are just like it's everything they say is
- 22:59Speaker 6: that are really correct. It's never if they if they're
- 23:04Speaker 6: ever right, it's by accident. But at the same time,
- 23:07Speaker 6: what they're always trying to do is shift everyone to
- 23:10Speaker 6: be like no, no, no, like this this is a
- 23:12Speaker 6: DEI thing blah blah blah blah or anything like that,
- 23:15Speaker 6: and then if if anything actually fails, it's not because
- 23:20Speaker 6: of them. But y'all are y'all have always been in
- 23:24Speaker 6: a space where y'all are always correct, Like the things
- 23:28Speaker 6: that y'all talk about, where it's just like this is
- 23:30Speaker 6: like this is trash, it's going away real soon or
- 23:33Speaker 6: anything like that, right, Or it's like, oh, if you
- 23:35Speaker 6: change this thing, do you turn it a little bit
- 23:37Speaker 6: to it this way? Y'all? Are y'all are correct? Especially
- 23:41Speaker 6: if it's like someone shifts something a little bit and
- 23:45Speaker 6: if it's exactly how y'all recommend it. Suddenly they got
- 23:48Speaker 6: a fortune and a huge I P on their hands.
- 23:51Speaker 6: So it was I don't even know where I was
- 23:54Speaker 6: going with that. I just want.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I know, I mean, I thought you was also going
- 24:01Speaker 2: to say like all these bitches is our sons, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 2: which is true too.
- 24:04Speaker 6: But you know that's all right, You're gonna get a
- 24:08Speaker 6: lot of people is going to continue to copy the
- 24:10Speaker 6: model for y'all made.
- 24:11Speaker 1: So yeah, no, I appreciate that I do one up
- 24:14Speaker 1: before you go on out down. I say, because Mellow
- 24:16Speaker 1: was talking about like the structure thing, and I want
- 24:18Speaker 1: to you know, I've thanked them before, but now that
- 24:20Speaker 1: we're here on the show, I'd like to really, you know,
- 24:22Speaker 1: take a second and thank Mellow because this meant more
- 24:26Speaker 1: than anything, you know, working on this book with him.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I talked about that in a recent interview. I was
- 24:31Speaker 1: like you know, they're like, what on the Reddit am
- 24:33Speaker 1: I Actually I talked about it because they were like,
- 24:36Speaker 1: what was one of the best parts of working on
- 24:38Speaker 1: this book? And I was like, honestly reconnecting with my
- 24:40Speaker 1: brother because you know, I felt like we hadn't been
- 24:43Speaker 1: as close as we'd been before, and working on this
- 24:46Speaker 1: book really, you know, brought us back together where we
- 24:49Speaker 1: were talking all the time and everything of that nature.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And it was just the fact that he reached out
- 24:54Speaker 1: to me, and you know, it brought me back then
- 24:57Speaker 1: to this when I really would isn't sure what was
- 25:01Speaker 1: going to happen, you know, and I was just sort
- 25:04Speaker 1: of out here, you know, doing them on about my life,
- 25:07Speaker 1: you know, and so that it means a lot to me,
- 25:10Speaker 1: and I just want to thank them.
- 25:11Speaker 6: So thank you, No, I mean thank you man. Like
- 25:14Speaker 6: I like the minute that like it was you could
- 25:18Speaker 6: actually look at how quickly afforded the email where someone
- 25:21Speaker 6: was like, you want to make this book and it
- 25:23Speaker 6: was like within like ten minutes. So I was like, Yo,
- 25:28Speaker 6: you want to do this because like I've been looking
- 25:31Speaker 6: for a project since we were on American Guys for
- 25:35Speaker 6: us to like really like lock in on together. One
- 25:38Speaker 6: thing that happens when you get a writing partner. You
- 25:40Speaker 6: know what projects are really good for like both of
- 25:43Speaker 6: you at one time, and then which one, like you know,
- 25:45Speaker 6: like y'all should like spread out in attacking individually. And
- 25:50Speaker 6: this was like a perfect one for like both of us,
- 25:53Speaker 6: and it I couldn't like, I couldn't have dreamt of
- 25:59Speaker 6: a better project for both of us to work on.
- 26:02Speaker 6: I'm so proud of it because I got to really
- 26:05Speaker 6: just see Ben shine in a way that like he
- 26:07Speaker 6: didn't really get the opportunity to when we were on
- 26:09Speaker 6: American Gods and your staff writer, you really ain't nothing.
- 26:12Speaker 6: They really ain't well. They're like you start typing the keyboarder.
- 26:16Speaker 6: They're like you're taking our order, you know, Like.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I will never forget the date when we had
- 26:23Speaker 1: a whole new ass plot and I mean they were like, yes,
- 26:27Speaker 1: we don't go with that.
- 26:28Speaker 5: And then the next day they walked in and it
- 26:30Speaker 5: was like now we could.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Fuck that good idea.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Not no other discussion. It was like wait, we left
- 26:39Speaker 1: on we're doing with that. And then they came back
- 26:42Speaker 1: to say like, nah, I don't think so.
- 26:46Speaker 6: Some TV.
- 26:47Speaker 2: But anyway, I'm really glad that, like because I wanted
- 26:52Speaker 2: to ask about revolution and all that and that specific
- 26:55Speaker 2: point about you know, it being easy when you're up
- 26:57Speaker 2: to talk about that and be that way, because we
- 27:01Speaker 2: Ben had used it many times and it was just
- 27:03Speaker 2: spoken and even the interviews that idea and a lot
- 27:06Speaker 2: of people hear that word and just think of it
- 27:08Speaker 2: as something just in the air as far in terms
- 27:11Speaker 2: of instead of something that's more practical.
- 27:13Speaker 3: And I just wanted to hear from the both of
- 27:15Speaker 3: you how you got that.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Like recently, I can't remember, I made a post somewhere
- 27:20Speaker 1: on something and it's basically about Kamala and all that,
- 27:24Speaker 1: and you know, someone younger and very you know, energetic,
- 27:29Speaker 1: I would say it was like, you know, no, we
- 27:31Speaker 1: you know, we can change the system right now. You know,
- 27:33Speaker 1: we can vote in somebody else. I think they were
- 27:36Speaker 1: going for Jill.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Stein and said Jill Scott.
- 27:39Speaker 5: I'm like, well, i'd vote for her for a lot
- 27:43Speaker 5: of things, but definitely not Yeah.
- 27:47Speaker 1: But they, you know, they were like, and we can
- 27:50Speaker 1: use social media, you know, we don't.
- 27:52Speaker 5: We have this now.
- 27:53Speaker 1: And I was just like, look, that's and that and
- 27:55Speaker 1: I quoted him that whole rats thing, and I was like,
- 27:57Speaker 1: you know, that's sounds for the theory, But are you
- 27:59Speaker 1: gonna read burn this whole motherfucker down right now? Because
- 28:01Speaker 1: this motherfucker's been rolling for a minute, you know, And
- 28:05Speaker 1: it's like people are you know, the people who are
- 28:08Speaker 1: investing in keeping it rolling are heavily invested in keeping
- 28:11Speaker 1: it rolling. So it's just like you gotta do what
- 28:14Speaker 1: you gotta do. But again, back to this book. That's
- 28:17Speaker 1: why you know, well, I mean he burned down his guitar,
- 28:22Speaker 1: you know, he got to everything else slowly, but surely
- 28:26Speaker 1: you know, and it's like yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, And
- 28:29Speaker 1: that's why get there. That's why I'm really proud of
- 28:32Speaker 1: this book, like Mel said, because it's one of those
- 28:34Speaker 1: things that and one of this other. It's not a quote,
- 28:38Speaker 1: but this book I once read. It talked about revolution
- 28:40Speaker 1: that I really took the heart. Was like, you don't
- 28:43Speaker 1: start a revolution with ten thousand people or even one
- 28:47Speaker 1: hundred people. You don't change one hundred people one hundred percent.
- 28:50Speaker 1: You change one person one hundred percent, and then they
- 28:54Speaker 1: change another person one hundred percent.
- 28:56Speaker 5: And that's how it's moves.
- 28:58Speaker 6: You know.
- 28:58Speaker 5: You do not start revolutions all big stales.
- 29:01Speaker 1: And so that's why I'm so proud of this book
- 29:03Speaker 1: because I feel like this is one of those things
- 29:06Speaker 1: that pushes these ideas out there, you know, and generates
- 29:09Speaker 1: ideas and it's like a viral injection into the world consciousness.
- 29:15Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, you know, I'm really glad you guys
- 29:17Speaker 2: talked about your partnership as writers and as creatives, because
- 29:22Speaker 2: I'm just curious, is what strengths did you find in
- 29:24Speaker 2: each other to be able to complete this project?
- 29:27Speaker 1: Oh man, First of all, Mellow knows how to structure
- 29:31Speaker 1: and plot things, and it's just better at organizing things
- 29:38Speaker 1: than I am. I'll just be honest, like I have
- 29:41Speaker 1: a Yeah, that's one of my difficulties, and so I
- 29:44Speaker 1: think he's better at that, and I'll just say that
- 29:46Speaker 1: off top and then.
- 29:48Speaker 5: Also appreciate you. Oh yeah.
- 29:53Speaker 1: And also like I think who else are telling the
- 29:55Speaker 1: story about, like the Dembaca and their whole sistance in
- 29:59Speaker 1: the book. I think I was telling you that night,
- 30:01Speaker 1: and that started because I just had this idea where
- 30:04Speaker 1: I just wanted to see Jimmy Hendrix riding the dragon.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I was like, you know, that's I was obsessed with
- 30:09Speaker 1: the idea of it. And it goes back to the
- 30:12Speaker 1: whole idea of taking back imagery that we typically associate
- 30:17Speaker 1: with white people and rock and roll music. And so
- 30:20Speaker 1: you always have these like vans for they have the
- 30:22Speaker 1: airbrush on the side, and there'll be some white dude
- 30:25Speaker 1: with the blonde hair and he's riding the dragon playing
- 30:27Speaker 1: his guitar. And I was like, nah, we're gonna take
- 30:29Speaker 1: that back, and we're gonna have that type of imery
- 30:31Speaker 1: in our book with.
- 30:32Speaker 5: A black man doing it, you know. And so that
- 30:35Speaker 5: was my thoughts.
- 30:36Speaker 1: I was like dragons, dragons, and I was like, yo,
- 30:38Speaker 1: you know, there's a better way to do that. And
- 30:41Speaker 1: from that we came with the Dumbaca and it became
- 30:44Speaker 1: part and parcel and central to the storyline and worked
- 30:48Speaker 1: in the whole economy and everything else in the world
- 30:51Speaker 1: building that we were doing. And I just you know,
- 30:53Speaker 1: that was because he pretty much encouraged me to, you know,
- 30:57Speaker 1: make it weirder and make it more unique and ship
- 31:00Speaker 1: like that.
- 31:01Speaker 6: So and that was my favorite part of work with Ben,
- 31:05Speaker 6: like just see him go wild, like like every every
- 31:08Speaker 6: time we had a meeting, he had like a list
- 31:11Speaker 6: of like like it was like it was one meeting
- 31:13Speaker 6: that we had and I was like like just throw
- 31:18Speaker 6: anything out there, like like you were saying, like, uh,
- 31:22Speaker 6: my entire career is mostly built around building skeletons around stories,
- 31:27Speaker 6: so that way it has a spine, and like like
- 31:29Speaker 6: you just throw the meat on and we can make
- 31:32Speaker 6: him work. This thing is gonna walk down the street.
- 31:34Speaker 6: It's gonna be great. And the thing that I was
- 31:38Speaker 6: so excited about we're going been again with is that
- 31:41Speaker 6: he always comes with like he got like a bag
- 31:44Speaker 6: of ideas and all it needs is a skeleton. And
- 31:49Speaker 6: so we just started like dressing it up like a
- 31:51Speaker 6: Christmas tree at that point. And so yeah, like seeing
- 31:55Speaker 6: him like go nuts, and then like every time we
- 31:59Speaker 6: had a meeting, like a, right, we're gonna work on
- 32:00Speaker 6: the next twenty two pages, He's got like another stack
- 32:04Speaker 6: of like some wild ideas going on and everything like
- 32:06Speaker 6: that to the point where we made it to like
- 32:08Speaker 6: the it was like the third act, and I was like, Okay,
- 32:13Speaker 6: where is this going? We got we got we were
- 32:17Speaker 6: we were like on a clall for like five hours
- 32:19Speaker 6: just trying to figure out where is this going now?
- 32:23Speaker 6: And like just like uh, like I had never been
- 32:26Speaker 6: locked in a wall so hard, Like I got a
- 32:29Speaker 6: whole career of figuring out people's crazy ideas, and like
- 32:33Speaker 6: he had so many wild ones. I was just like,
- 32:36Speaker 6: all right, I gotta like walk around the room.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Was there anything in that big bag where you were like,
- 32:43Speaker 2: hell no, Ben, I mean no, oh you mean ideas
- 32:48Speaker 2: for the book?
- 32:49Speaker 6: Everything is in there. Everything is in a book.
- 32:53Speaker 2: There was no disagreements in terms of flat or character
- 32:57Speaker 2: or anything where you were like that can't go.
- 32:59Speaker 6: That's all yes, And like I just had to figure
- 33:03Speaker 6: it out, figure out how to.
- 33:06Speaker 3: And also similarly, Ben, was there anything that said what
- 33:08Speaker 3: you were like?
- 33:09Speaker 5: Nose?
- 33:10Speaker 1: That's one Me and Mellow have worked together, and we've
- 33:13Speaker 1: because we've I think because we've worked together like you
- 33:16Speaker 1: was talking about, in an environment where we were basically
- 33:19Speaker 1: like people always say, you know, and I think Melow
- 33:23Speaker 1: relates to the people.
- 33:24Speaker 5: It's it's interesting.
- 33:26Speaker 1: I'll say, being in a writer's room when you're surrounded
- 33:29Speaker 1: by people who don't come from the same environments that
- 33:31Speaker 1: you come from, because to them, the idea of pitching
- 33:36Speaker 1: an idea is you know, scary, and to me it's like, oh,
- 33:42Speaker 1: you ain't like that ship, how about this one? Then
- 33:45Speaker 1: you know, oh you ain't like ten of them? Well,
- 33:48Speaker 1: here's e living. You know, it's like it doesn't really
- 33:51Speaker 1: matter to me. You know, anything you don't like, I'm
- 33:54Speaker 1: gonna put right back in his bag and bring it
- 33:56Speaker 1: back around when I'm writing something else, you know. Yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 1: you know it's because we come from that environment, you know.
- 34:02Speaker 1: And like I told you, I've been on the yard
- 34:05Speaker 1: at Howard. I've had to see a woman, you know,
- 34:07Speaker 1: walking across the yard and been like, yeah, let me
- 34:09Speaker 1: go over there, and you know, say, what up.
- 34:13Speaker 5: Broad daylight? Yeah, that's much worse to me.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's much worse to me than pitching an idea
- 34:18Speaker 1: in the writer's room that I'm getting paid.
- 34:19Speaker 6: For so I.
- 34:25Speaker 5: Check.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sticking my check. But I can just get
- 34:28Speaker 1: this a broad daylight and everyone could be.
- 34:30Speaker 5: Like a you know, for nothing. I earned no money.
- 34:37Speaker 6: I just play.
- 34:40Speaker 5: Like for free.
- 34:41Speaker 1: And so because of that, I don't It was like
- 34:43Speaker 1: being in this environment where it's just me and mellow
- 34:46Speaker 1: and we're basically like and well me personally, I was like, Okay,
- 34:50Speaker 1: this might be my first and last time a book,
- 34:52Speaker 1: so let me just anything I think about, Let's go
- 34:56Speaker 1: for it. Let's see and you know, I'll say there's
- 34:58Speaker 1: a few things that didn't make it. But that just
- 35:00Speaker 1: because I thought of him too late. That's the only
- 35:01Speaker 1: thing like that, you know, I thought, you know, I
- 35:04Speaker 1: thought that ship. I'll be hitting Tom like, yo, can
- 35:05Speaker 1: you do this panel like that? And I know that
- 35:07Speaker 1: niggas like nigga.
- 35:09Speaker 6: No so but no, like we drove him crazy. I'll
- 35:20Speaker 6: give him a little one. He could whisper it to.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Him between YouTube.
- 35:26Speaker 1: I'm giving man dressed in the pants to say it,
- 35:28Speaker 1: but but not in front of me as long as
- 35:30Speaker 1: I'm saying in front of me time.
- 35:34Speaker 5: But no, like, it.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Was so much ship that I just could not believe
- 35:40Speaker 1: made it in the book. You know, that was the
- 35:42Speaker 1: wildest thing to me, Like to this day now i'm
- 35:45Speaker 1: looking at I will never get over the fact that
- 35:47Speaker 1: backwash cotters exist.
- 35:49Speaker 3: That's my favorite character name. I was role.
- 35:57Speaker 1: There's a panel he's talking to Jimmy about his collection
- 36:00Speaker 1: and he's like ooh and his hands are up like ooh,
- 36:03Speaker 1: and Tom did that ship and I didn't, you know,
- 36:05Speaker 1: And it was just like when I got that back
- 36:07Speaker 1: and saw that pan off him, like ooh, I just cried.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I'm likeo Tom is such a monster, Like, oh my god.
- 36:15Speaker 2: So much made it, Melo said, everything made it yeah
- 36:18Speaker 2: for me, Like didn't even tell your ass.
- 36:19Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, like and that's why I was
- 36:22Speaker 1: jemped back to is the writer's room thing? It's like
- 36:24Speaker 1: it's an and yes thing like mel Like when I'm
- 36:27Speaker 1: like dragons, Mello was like not no. Melo was like,
- 36:31Speaker 1: all right, but how about if we do it and
- 36:33Speaker 1: like this, you know, and basically I'll give away this
- 36:36Speaker 1: secret because writers need to know this shit. What he
- 36:39Speaker 1: was saying was, don't do dragons because then it's house
- 36:42Speaker 1: and dragons.
- 36:42Speaker 5: Nigga, somebody else own that.
- 36:44Speaker 1: You know, like, do something that you own in some way,
- 36:48Speaker 1: even if you don't own that ip that way. It
- 36:50Speaker 1: is a unique creation, you know what I mean. So
- 36:52Speaker 1: it's like that is there the Dembacco? Yes, like you
- 36:58Speaker 1: know you think of Dembacca, you think of and Mellow now, yeah,
- 37:01Speaker 1: you think the dragons.
- 37:02Speaker 5: You can think of anybody.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Yeah. Shout out to Joel who thought it was a
- 37:06Speaker 3: real mythological.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Creature, Like, I'm like, real, it is a real fictional creature,
- 37:11Speaker 2: but it real in terms of there's like history behind it.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Yeah, no, he thought, you know he went in Google. Yeah, No,
- 37:17Speaker 1: this ship's right, now shout out to Joel. But yeah,
- 37:20Speaker 1: but it's also you know, based off of some other stuff.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I won't give everything away.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Now you want to get that way, No, but just
- 37:26Speaker 2: I mean that that world building, the fact that I
- 37:28Speaker 2: like that, I love hearing that fact that that's very
- 37:31Speaker 2: smart to mellow that the whole aspect of even the
- 37:34Speaker 2: creation of the ownership of it obviously everything you could
- 37:37Speaker 2: think of and put on paper, you have some type
- 37:39Speaker 2: of ownership of it before to be so unique enough
- 37:42Speaker 2: where it is completely connected to you. Like when I've
- 37:45Speaker 2: read them baka and when I see them baka, I
- 37:47Speaker 2: don't hear or see nothing else that's existing in terms
- 37:51Speaker 2: of as you mentioned all this other fandoms, I'm only
- 37:55Speaker 2: and that I'm only centering that on Jimmy Hender's trouble Hates.
- 38:01Speaker 3: No, that's the that is talk about a hell of
- 38:03Speaker 3: a name. Those names.
- 38:06Speaker 6: I can't even tell you what was going up in
- 38:07Speaker 6: my head when I read that name.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I kid, yeah, don't I tell you or did I
- 38:11Speaker 1: descend it to you?
- 38:14Speaker 6: You didn't want to tell you sent it to me
- 38:15Speaker 6: like I.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Was, like, I mean, a scummy name for a scummy character.
- 38:20Speaker 6: The day he sent it to me too. I was
- 38:23Speaker 6: I was in one hundred and ten degree weather and
- 38:28Speaker 6: uh at like the Budweiser factory out here in Burbank
- 38:33Speaker 6: shooting for like ten hours and like and I was
- 38:37Speaker 6: one of the only people who couldn't go back into
- 38:39Speaker 6: like a chill place because I was in like the
- 38:42Speaker 6: nest where like you know, you in there and you
- 38:44Speaker 6: watch the cameras, you gotta watch everything. And one of
- 38:47Speaker 6: the actors was directing, and so I'm just like, all right,
- 38:50Speaker 6: so I'm producing real hard right now. So I'm like sweating,
- 38:54Speaker 6: getting a heat stroke. I come home open this email
- 38:58Speaker 6: Backwash Cortes. I'm like, you know what. I was like,
- 39:05Speaker 6: you know what, I just just laid out. I read.
- 39:08Speaker 6: I read some.
- 39:10Speaker 3: Comic sans font.
- 39:12Speaker 1: It was just one of them things like I was
- 39:14Speaker 1: home alone. I was definitely roasted, and I was sitting there, like,
- 39:18Speaker 1: you know, trying to come up with his name, and
- 39:19Speaker 1: it popped in my head and it just would not leave.
- 39:23Speaker 1: And then Bowling ball Head popped in my head and
- 39:25Speaker 1: that would not leave either, and then I was just
- 39:28Speaker 1: I googled it and I didn't see Bowling ball Head.
- 39:30Speaker 1: So I was like, once again, okay, I can claim
- 39:32Speaker 1: that space. You know, anybody sees bowling ball head character
- 39:35Speaker 1: to think of backwash Cortes.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Yes, so I can tell you're very proud of this,
- 39:39Speaker 2: and I'm very.
- 39:42Speaker 1: And I mean it was beyond proud because if you
- 39:44Speaker 1: buy the book, you can see there's uh script page
- 39:48Speaker 1: pages in the back and for some reason someone decided
- 39:52Speaker 1: to choose the page where backwashed court tesn't introduced.
- 39:56Speaker 6: So you know how much you love because is what
- 40:01Speaker 6: they what?
- 40:01Speaker 5: You know?
- 40:01Speaker 6: Who's responsible?
- 40:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's all me, That's that's all me, right there, folks,
- 40:07Speaker 1: mellow you know he approved it, But you know I
- 40:09Speaker 1: conceived that.
- 40:10Speaker 2: One of course, of course, how proud of the both
- 40:13Speaker 2: of you, considering being two black men obviously in this
- 40:17Speaker 2: space when it comes to comments, when it comes to writing,
- 40:19Speaker 2: but also highlighting such an iconic black man that also
- 40:24Speaker 2: is clearly severely misunderstood or not even known well enough.
- 40:29Speaker 3: How does that feel?
- 40:31Speaker 6: I think this will probably be but it will definitely
- 40:34Speaker 6: be the the most important thing that I do in
- 40:41Speaker 6: probably my graphic novel for but there's being able to
- 40:45Speaker 6: tell a story about like that. I want to do this,
- 40:50Speaker 6: or I want to at least have it be done
- 40:52Speaker 6: for more people that we didn't get them know, like
- 40:56Speaker 6: that we didn't get to know really in the genuine
- 40:59Speaker 6: side of it. I want to know if like like
- 41:02Speaker 6: was was a Leah Nerd, like you know, like like
- 41:05Speaker 6: we saw her like Romeo must die and like that
- 41:07Speaker 6: she was a vampire. Like I want to know like
- 41:10Speaker 6: the little stuff about her and like have a story
- 41:13Speaker 6: about like what she aspired to be when the camera
- 41:18Speaker 6: was on. And I want people to like relate to
- 41:24Speaker 6: people who didn't get that opportunity like that. It's like
- 41:26Speaker 6: the whole like the Loupe album where Samurai, where the
- 41:29Speaker 6: whole thing is about Amy Winehouse, Like what if Amy
- 41:33Speaker 6: Winehouse was a rapper and she like lived and what
- 41:35Speaker 6: would that story have been, like how the community had
- 41:38Speaker 6: treated her and everything, And like it's just there's so
- 41:41Speaker 6: many ways tell stories like that and have an opportunity
- 41:45Speaker 6: to do that with Jimmy is like so important to me,
- 41:49Speaker 6: especially like hopefully what it can do for other people
- 41:54Speaker 6: and how they feel about their circumstances right now.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, It's it's the weirdest thing, right because it's like
- 42:04Speaker 1: I'm sitting here looking at the book as Mellow was
- 42:06Speaker 1: talking about it, and like I said. We went into
- 42:09Speaker 1: it definitely with this view of, well, let's just tell
- 42:11Speaker 1: a good story, you know. That was my thing. I
- 42:13Speaker 1: was like, let me do the best. Damn come a
- 42:15Speaker 1: book I can do. That was my main goal, you know,
- 42:18Speaker 1: and everything else that came with Jimmy Hendrix I really
- 42:21Speaker 1: didn't think about. I don't know, I just always approached
- 42:24Speaker 1: a lot of things in life like that.
- 42:25Speaker 5: You know.
- 42:25Speaker 1: I just try and not think about the at the time,
- 42:28Speaker 1: at least when I'm doing them, I'm not thinking about,
- 42:30Speaker 1: you know, oh ship.
- 42:31Speaker 5: You know.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I remember Chico Leo was like, Yo, your name's could
- 42:34Speaker 1: be in Jimmy Hendrix's Wikipedia, and I was like, what,
- 42:38Speaker 1: I'm not thinking about, you know, anything of that sort.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Now that it's out, I'm waiting for my name to be,
- 42:44Speaker 1: you know.
- 42:46Speaker 6: I was just.
- 42:50Speaker 5: So I have.
- 42:52Speaker 6: If I did, yeah, so I'll be on Mini Faces.
- 42:58Speaker 3: He taler I.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Would have been on like Americans, like on the cancel season,
- 43:01Speaker 1: the season two.
- 43:03Speaker 6: I mean, he's what I was supposed to be.
- 43:07Speaker 1: It wasn't gonna happen, but no yet at the time,
- 43:11Speaker 1: I could not think of that. And then now it
- 43:13Speaker 1: still bugs me out because it's just so weird. You know,
- 43:16Speaker 1: it's such a like my life is generally weird, but
- 43:20Speaker 1: this is yet another weird moment where it's like, wow,
- 43:23Speaker 1: that's that's really interesting, you know. And and to me,
- 43:27Speaker 1: I think we did a really good job, and it's
- 43:28Speaker 1: I'm like, wow, that's that's pretty solid.
- 43:31Speaker 5: You know, that's cool.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Like I feel like you put the culture with this one.
- 43:35Speaker 1: I would hope, so I did it like that. That
- 43:38Speaker 1: was my main goal.
- 43:39Speaker 5: I didn't put on for the bank account, if.
- 43:45Speaker 6: Someone's doing if someone's doing the comic as always, for
- 43:48Speaker 6: the culture, buy a house.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Unless you're Robert Kurtman, you know. And and even him
- 43:54Speaker 1: like that was pure accidental, you know. It was like
- 43:58Speaker 1: that man was Struggle City, you know, like oh yeah.
- 44:02Speaker 6: Or are you like some of those senior writers right
- 44:05Speaker 6: now that are like like, hey, maybe I could turn
- 44:08Speaker 6: this into a movie, even though movie studios is just
- 44:12Speaker 6: like we know, when you're trying to make a comic
- 44:13Speaker 6: book a movie, you're like you're ready to hear like
- 44:16Speaker 6: a movie.
- 44:16Speaker 1: But yeah, even that money ain't running like you used to.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Thanks mister Miller. Well you know you made that one hard.
- 44:28Speaker 5: On everybody, boy.
- 44:32Speaker 2: But considering you guys are doing it for the culture
- 44:34Speaker 2: and not the cash. How does it feel or does
- 44:37Speaker 2: it or what it bother you? If people read this
- 44:40Speaker 2: and they don't understand the other side of it, like
- 44:43Speaker 2: we talked about black music and the implications of blackness
- 44:47Speaker 2: and all this other stuff, there are going to be
- 44:49Speaker 2: readers and maybe already as is, that are just not
- 44:52Speaker 2: going to grasp any of that that for one reason
- 44:54Speaker 2: or another, they're not going to catch it.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Is that going to bother you?
- 44:58Speaker 6: No?
- 45:00Speaker 1: Uh so far to me, the majority of readers haven't
- 45:02Speaker 1: caught well, I want to say the majority, the majority
- 45:05Speaker 1: of reviews that I've seen haven't caught that at all.
- 45:08Speaker 1: They might have caught the themes about fascism and all that,
- 45:11Speaker 1: but the blackness side of it, I haven't. It's I'm
- 45:15Speaker 1: waiting on the reviews to really get into that because
- 45:18Speaker 1: I'm yeah, but I think that's the interesting thing. And
- 45:22Speaker 1: I did not and I know Mellow as well. We
- 45:25Speaker 1: both wrote it where it could be appreciated on many levels,
- 45:28Speaker 1: and that was one of the main goals. Was it
- 45:29Speaker 1: to be. I wanted to just write a really dope
- 45:34Speaker 1: sci fi star wars as even Dmitri from Anyone Comics,
- 45:40Speaker 1: he said it was like the Best Star Trek episode
- 45:42Speaker 1: I wanted. I was mad he didn't. I forgot to
- 45:45Speaker 1: have him repeat that to you while you were there. Yeah,
- 45:48Speaker 1: I wanted, you know, I wanted you to hear it because.
- 45:51Speaker 3: That was like the person I get it.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and that was bid to me, you know, to
- 45:56Speaker 1: hear that, because that's what I wanted. And then I
- 45:59Speaker 1: just wanted to coincidentally feature black people, you know, I
- 46:02Speaker 1: didn't want it. Yeah, I didn't want it to be
- 46:04Speaker 1: anything more than that, you know. I wanted it to
- 46:06Speaker 1: be this really dope story and then that type of
- 46:10Speaker 1: shit that blackness is just you know, that's just don't
- 46:12Speaker 1: come through in me and you know, so yeah, it
- 46:16Speaker 1: don't happen like but at the same time, I wanted
- 46:19Speaker 1: it to be this solid story that you don't have
- 46:20Speaker 1: to get any of that, and I think we did
- 46:22Speaker 1: that as well too.
- 46:23Speaker 6: So most are pretty cool. If if like someone picks
- 46:27Speaker 6: it up and they're like not feeling it or anything
- 46:29Speaker 6: like that. I we were talking about it earlier. I
- 46:33Speaker 6: don't read reviews. I also don't even like once I wrote,
- 46:38Speaker 6: once something was published or released on TV that I've made,
- 46:42Speaker 6: I never looked at it again. It doesn't belong to
- 46:45Speaker 6: me anymore. And I think more importantly, it's an encapsulation
- 46:49Speaker 6: of where.
- 46:49Speaker 3: I was at that time, So you don't want to
- 46:52Speaker 3: visit it?
- 46:53Speaker 6: No, Well, was it? Like I don't want to keep
- 46:56Speaker 6: dipping back in the world, because you see a lot
- 46:58Speaker 6: of creatives do that, like successful one time, and then
- 47:01Speaker 6: they just kind of keep a turn to that they
- 47:03Speaker 6: don't take the opportunity to evolve, which ironically is what
- 47:06Speaker 6: the book is about. So having the opportunity to give
- 47:10Speaker 6: like everyone an experience, and like I want everybody to
- 47:14Speaker 6: approach it from just anywhere they are, no matter even
- 47:17Speaker 6: what like what culture they are, because it's it is
- 47:22Speaker 6: like a very specific story about just identity and figuring
- 47:27Speaker 6: yourself out in the process. And sometimes that is like,
- 47:32Speaker 6: you know, like maybe I don't work for a machine.
- 47:34Speaker 6: Some maybe I'm a revolutionary, but also sometimes it's just
- 47:38Speaker 6: you know, like maybe I need to like focus on
- 47:43Speaker 6: where it came from, who my family is, and how
- 47:46Speaker 6: to pull people up around me, which is like another
- 47:49Speaker 6: storyline that we have in there, and having people just
- 47:52Speaker 6: kind of like chill back and have a good time
- 47:56Speaker 6: with that. And during interviews a comic con the best
- 48:02Speaker 6: reactions that I remember were getting was just like just
- 48:05Speaker 6: had a good time, Like I just like I just
- 48:07Speaker 6: really enjoyed like every bit of it. It was like
- 48:09Speaker 6: something that I needed right now, And like that's that.
- 48:12Speaker 6: Those are the reactions are really big, but I'm never
- 48:14Speaker 6: going to like look for them, because those are those
- 48:16Speaker 6: ones that are just like so organic and smooth that
- 48:19Speaker 6: like I want to give somebody a feeling that's not
- 48:22Speaker 6: always easy to put in the words.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Yeah, Like today somebody posted a unboxing video and they
- 48:32Speaker 1: tagged me, and and that shit was like I can't
- 48:35Speaker 1: describe that emotion that I felt looking at the look
- 48:39Speaker 1: in their eyes when they pulled the book out. First,
- 48:42Speaker 1: when they first pulled it out of the box, they
- 48:43Speaker 1: were like and then when they started opening it they
- 48:47Speaker 1: said something like oh stop, you know, and it was
- 48:49Speaker 1: just like they just read the words, and I was like, Yo,
- 48:52Speaker 1: that's fucking nuts.
- 48:54Speaker 5: Be like that type of you know, it's just I
- 48:58Speaker 5: live for it.
- 48:59Speaker 1: And then something else that I wanted to add on
- 49:01Speaker 1: a mellow saying I can't remember who said this, but
- 49:04Speaker 1: I read this quote the other day and I'll probably
- 49:05Speaker 1: think of it forever now. It was like they're talking
- 49:09Speaker 1: about how they're not. They don't want to be known
- 49:11Speaker 1: as a noun. Basically, you know, I'm not wait what
- 49:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it? Yeah, they're not a noun there,
- 49:17Speaker 1: they're verbs. Like they do things, you know. They're not
- 49:19Speaker 1: a writer, they're not an actor, you know, they do
- 49:22Speaker 1: different things. And that's something that I've always been in
- 49:25Speaker 1: my life, and for a long time in my life
- 49:28Speaker 1: was conflicting to me because I'd be like, Oh, I'm
- 49:30Speaker 1: doing too much. I'm doing this, I'm doing that. You know,
- 49:32Speaker 1: I'm never gonna make it in anything, you know, because
- 49:35Speaker 1: of that, And that was a real fear of mine.
- 49:37Speaker 1: And then I've come to accept it more. And it's
- 49:40Speaker 1: something like like the other day, I was like, I'm
- 49:42Speaker 1: not writing every day, you know, I don't do that.
- 49:44Speaker 5: You know.
- 49:44Speaker 1: I never have been that type of writer. I do
- 49:47Speaker 1: creative things pretty much every day. But I just do
- 49:52Speaker 1: different things, you know, And that's just what it is.
- 49:54Speaker 1: And so some days I write, sometimes I don't. But
- 49:57Speaker 1: unlike Mellow, I am someone who looks at reviews. Especially
- 50:00Speaker 1: it is because this is like my first book, and
- 50:02Speaker 1: I just really want to see what people think about it.
- 50:04Speaker 1: And I've been really hyped to talk to people about it,
- 50:06Speaker 1: even more so than reviews. More I've been really wanting
- 50:10Speaker 1: to talk to people about the book and like really
- 50:13Speaker 1: see what worked for people, you know, what they enjoyed,
- 50:16Speaker 1: what they did in all those type of things.
- 50:18Speaker 5: That's what I really want to do, Melo.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Since you're here, I can tell you about how I
- 50:23Speaker 2: felt about the book. So I actually read the book
- 50:26Speaker 2: first on a phone. I had like a preview copy,
- 50:30Speaker 2: so I didn't even get to see it in all
- 50:31Speaker 2: its full format glory. I didn't get to see that
- 50:34Speaker 2: until after the fact. Right, it looks good. It's obviously
- 50:39Speaker 2: a completely different experience. It's, you know, watching it on
- 50:41Speaker 2: a forty two inch TV versus you and imax right
- 50:44Speaker 2: once you get the book right, So it's a different sperience,
- 50:47Speaker 2: but it's still looks good. I want to make that
- 50:50Speaker 2: distinction of how I read it to then couple that
- 50:53Speaker 2: with what the What actually happened as I was reading
- 50:57Speaker 2: it was extremely visceral, and I mean it in the
- 51:00Speaker 2: sense of I was having levels of synesthesia like.
- 51:05Speaker 3: Seeing the music.
- 51:08Speaker 2: And I got when I was telling this the band,
- 51:11Speaker 2: I got a little emotional because music is everything to me.
- 51:14Speaker 2: Music is one of the most passionate important things in
- 51:17Speaker 2: my life and for me to read this see and
- 51:24Speaker 2: obviously know who's involved, but even taking that away, like
- 51:27Speaker 2: to be able to turn a page and hear the
- 51:29Speaker 2: music and feel the energy, feel the embodiment of movement
- 51:35Speaker 2: as I was going from panel to panel, and how
- 51:37Speaker 2: the characters are floating or moving or jumping or standing
- 51:40Speaker 2: still but with.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Aura flying around them. And obviously that.
- 51:48Speaker 2: Speaks to right, but it also speaks to the visuals,
- 51:51Speaker 2: right the Tom Mandrake, right, when you guys saw your
- 51:56Speaker 2: script and all the words couple with those visuals.
- 51:59Speaker 3: How Tom interpreted it everything. What what is the first
- 52:04Speaker 3: thing you said?
- 52:04Speaker 6: Thought, ill least take that one there, and thank Youski.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Of course, I kind of wanted to hear you, Mellow,
- 52:14Speaker 1: but I yeah, it's I can't you know, it's it's
- 52:20Speaker 1: like it's I've, like I said, KIE's saying, I've never
- 52:24Speaker 1: had this dumb Mellow had written you know, Blade Runner
- 52:27Speaker 1: and had a I think more than one artist work
- 52:29Speaker 1: on his stuff, and I've never had somebody tape my
- 52:33Speaker 1: words and turn them into you know, art, and so
- 52:37Speaker 1: like I was just thinking about the trips. I think
- 52:39Speaker 1: I want to post the first two pages, the first
- 52:41Speaker 1: three pages. Now now that the books out and talk
- 52:44Speaker 1: about them, and it was like I wrote those first
- 52:46Speaker 1: three pages and that shit. So like the first three
- 52:49Speaker 1: pages come back and I'm like, I wrote this ship,
- 52:51Speaker 1: and here it is, and it's just three of the
- 52:55Speaker 1: greatest as a person who's read literally I want to
- 52:58Speaker 1: say tens of thousands of probably at this point in
- 53:01Speaker 1: my life. I don't know, you know, I'm not sure
- 53:03Speaker 1: how many. It's just dumb amounts. And this is like
- 53:06Speaker 1: some of the greatest heart I've ever seen in anything.
- 53:09Speaker 1: So it's like some motherfucker took what I wrote and
- 53:12Speaker 1: turned it into some of the greatest art that I've
- 53:14Speaker 1: ever seen in the comic book. It's I can't you know,
- 53:18Speaker 1: I can't thank Tom enough. And then justin like it's
- 53:23Speaker 1: just it's some magical shit, man, this book, like both
- 53:27Speaker 1: of them. You know, I keep saying it, yeah, I
- 53:30Speaker 1: keep saying his name over and over again. And I said,
- 53:32Speaker 1: if we go to second printing, that will be the
- 53:34Speaker 1: one thing I pushed for it is to put his
- 53:36Speaker 1: name on the cover because I just feel like they
- 53:38Speaker 1: deserve just as much cover, I mean, just as much
- 53:40Speaker 1: credit as we do.
- 53:42Speaker 2: And this isn't your first graphic novel, Mellow, so it's
- 53:44Speaker 2: not the first time you've seen your worst translated visuals.
- 53:46Speaker 2: But I think this is obviously for many reasons we've
- 53:49Speaker 2: just voiced, this is very different.
- 53:50Speaker 6: Yeah, this is this is the This is once percent
- 53:55Speaker 6: of my favorite art that I've had so far.
- 54:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 54:06Speaker 3: Sorry, get you a copy of Blabor in the origins, Blas.
- 54:09Speaker 5: Sorry to every artist that you've ever worked before.
- 54:13Speaker 2: And well it's it's listen. It's okay to say you
- 54:16Speaker 2: have favorite art. It doesn't demean or lower the value
- 54:20Speaker 2: of the other art, right, Like you still have you
- 54:22Speaker 2: still have a favorite child, Right, I.
- 54:24Speaker 5: Do have favorite Nephewston. I've never been one to there.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Were children, but I have a faith a bias.
- 54:35Speaker 6: There where like we got the email of it was
- 54:38Speaker 6: before the colors came in, and we just thought like
- 54:41Speaker 6: like it like Tom immediately went at inks instead of
- 54:47Speaker 6: just giving us like a pencil layouts. He was like,
- 54:49Speaker 6: I was just feeling it and I'm already an ink,
- 54:52Speaker 6: which is like baller move. It's very very jockey because
- 54:55Speaker 6: if it was bad, you have to be doing right.
- 54:57Speaker 6: But we got sent that and and like I had
- 55:02Speaker 6: to just premise this even more, like I love Ben
- 55:05Speaker 6: so much, man, like that is that is my brother.
- 55:09Speaker 6: And I saw that and the first thing that I
- 55:12Speaker 6: thought it was like I knew that he was going
- 55:14Speaker 6: to have the reaction that he said, and I was
- 55:17Speaker 6: just so fucking proud, and I just didn't say anything.
- 55:22Speaker 6: I just wanted this to all just be about Ben's moment,
- 55:27Speaker 6: like the like everyone gets to see like this world
- 55:33Speaker 6: that he got the right and that he got to
- 55:37Speaker 6: create and like and then like Tom did an excellent
- 55:41Speaker 6: job of directing and bringing to life, and so it
- 55:45Speaker 6: was just like that's always going to be, like it'll
- 55:48Speaker 6: always be and that's no big reason why.
- 55:53Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, that's it. No, obviously I love you
- 55:57Speaker 1: as much and yeah, it's just you know, it's crazy
- 56:01Speaker 1: because it's like that's.
- 56:02Speaker 5: What I try and tell people.
- 56:03Speaker 1: It's like Tom and Drake is one of the ones,
- 56:07Speaker 1: you know, like there's people like Neil Adams, there's John Byrne,
- 56:11Speaker 1: you know, there's these legends, and Tom Man Drake is
- 56:14Speaker 1: one of them ones. You know, Like I was more
- 56:17Speaker 1: I mean John Byrne was personally who I grew up
- 56:20Speaker 1: on first, and then people like Arthur Adams are like
- 56:22Speaker 1: my goats, Arthur Adams, Ron Lim and then like even
- 56:26Speaker 1: I know a lot.
- 56:26Speaker 5: Of people have their issues with them, etcetera.
- 56:28Speaker 1: The Mcfawlanes, the Lafeld's, the Lalies were you know, all
- 56:32Speaker 1: just massive artists to me as a child, like those
- 56:34Speaker 1: were all just some one of my favorite people of
- 56:36Speaker 1: all time, Eric Larson, all them type of cats. And
- 56:41Speaker 1: like I said, I didn't know Tom because I did
- 56:43Speaker 1: not read a lot of DC as much traumas as
- 56:45Speaker 1: I read, especially back then it was Marvel, and then
- 56:48Speaker 1: I definitely didn't read horror, and Tom did The Specter,
- 56:51Speaker 1: which was super horror, and I just had no interest
- 56:54Speaker 1: in that type of joint. So I didn't know him
- 56:57Speaker 1: like that. But then as soon as they told me
- 56:59Speaker 1: who he was and I first saw this first image
- 57:01Speaker 1: of Hinndreds, I went and started googling his stuff and
- 57:04Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this dude really not only can
- 57:06Speaker 1: he draw, I mean that built it out saying, you know,
- 57:09Speaker 1: he's classically train He's like somebode who can draw anything.
- 57:13Speaker 1: But then it was tough for that. That way just
- 57:16Speaker 1: made me fall in love with him. Was I found
- 57:18Speaker 1: this one page where it was from the nineties, and
- 57:21Speaker 1: it had all these black people in the hood in
- 57:24Speaker 1: the nineties and dudes had like the Gumby flat top.
- 57:27Speaker 1: One dude had like the you know bit Deddy Kane
- 57:30Speaker 1: eyebrow shade.
- 57:32Speaker 5: And I was like, Oh, this white dude.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Gets it, you know what I mean, I'm not gonna
- 57:37Speaker 1: have to tell him nothing like he gets it.
- 57:40Speaker 5: He wasn't care.
- 57:42Speaker 6: I want to definitely say that we didn't have to
- 57:44Speaker 6: tell anything about like I I have had discussions with
- 57:49Speaker 6: both live action animated animated stuff that hasn't even seen
- 57:53Speaker 6: the light of day yet. Brother have to talk about
- 57:55Speaker 6: like Yo, I've.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Had to tell Mellow about it, like he showed me Yo,
- 57:59Speaker 1: bro telling him work on that.
- 58:04Speaker 2: We can that Yeah, no, no, look a pipe for
- 58:12Speaker 2: wrap of the wrap.
- 58:16Speaker 5: I remember I was saying, Yo, what serious?
- 58:25Speaker 6: But Tom just got it. He understood. He was always
- 58:29Speaker 6: on top of his game. He was just ready to go.
- 58:32Speaker 6: And yeah, man. It's also I think it's like so
- 58:38Speaker 6: one thing that is like whispered a lot to us
- 58:43Speaker 6: by people or other publishers, and especially with our publisher
- 58:47Speaker 6: and everything like that. They're like, I think this is
- 58:48Speaker 6: the best thing he's ever done, and I I, you know,
- 58:55Speaker 6: like I I haven't seen his entire library or work,
- 58:57Speaker 6: but of what I've seen, it's also my favorite. Obviously biased,
- 59:00Speaker 6: but even from an objective point of view, Like it's
- 59:06Speaker 6: one of those things where it's just like the level
- 59:08Speaker 6: of details, yes, the level of like and like he
- 59:12Speaker 6: is he is, Like I don't know how he gets
- 59:17Speaker 6: into like a level of detailed A script coordinator on set,
- 59:23Speaker 6: they wouldn't they wouldn't have that. It's like the exact
- 59:25Speaker 6: amount of buttons are always there on every piece of clothing,
- 59:31Speaker 6: even a background character. As they're like fading away, there's
- 59:35Speaker 6: just a little there's a little something there to say
- 59:37Speaker 6: something about who they are. And like his interpretation because
- 59:41Speaker 6: as an artist or a director, we write the script,
- 59:44Speaker 6: but like he is, like he gotta put the pieces
- 59:47Speaker 6: together and the way that he characterized just simple adjectives
- 59:53Speaker 6: that we gave him and turned it into something that's
- 59:56Speaker 6: just like alive, It breathes, you know, like it and
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: like it's it's incredible. So I couldn't I couldn't be
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: more thankful.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Yeah, to add on to that, like a few things. One,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: it's like when people talk about AI today, you know,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: and just use the AI and come a book art
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: and it.
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: Just you can't do shit like that.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Like there's this shot of the of this giant hippo,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: you know, and I want to get more away from
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: people who ever read it, but you see this hippo
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: in the foreground of one shot as they're approaching it,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: and then when they get closer you see it from
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: another angle. And it's just that type of thought, Like
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: I told him, Okay, the hippo needs to be in
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: this panel, but then he's like, well, they're approaching it
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: in that panel, so they should see it as they
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: approach it, because it's a giant fucking hippo. And I'm
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: like yeah, and I'm like, god, damn it, Tom, you know,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: thank you, Like Mello said, that's as script coordinator shit.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: Or then another one is like on one of my
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: favorite pages that Mellow wrote is the page where the
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: band members are explaining to Jimmy what happened on the world,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: you know, in the time that he's been gone. Yeah,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: and there's this whole illss Like I just love Mellow
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: for the trail. It's like in this one page he
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: tells this whole story.
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: It's like as a beginning, middle, and end, and Tom
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: on that page uses these characters who never speak, but
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: if you look, they're always in the book, you know,
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: they're like they're not only in this story, they appear
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: throughout the book and they're always where they should be.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: And like we didn't have I know, it's not.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: In the strip at all, but Tom drew this one character,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: you know, looking European and as they should, you know,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: and he drew the other character looking very African, and
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: so it tells that story, you know that we know
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: in this inner glad the world and the European character
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: keeps showing up over and over again, in African characterkeep
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: showing up over and over again. And it was like
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: none of that was in there, Tom, but you you know,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: you fucking get it, dog Like.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he gets it. There is I mean, clearly
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: he's been here. He's a legend. But and I didn't
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: know too much about him as well. But the level
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: of like dedication, love, expertise, and just consideration that it
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: comes to even like you may mention of how that
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: that that nineties based image he made, like to even
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: think to put that down to even like even without
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: either of you telling him, Oh, this is this would
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: make sense or put this type of charagy. He just like,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: you know what, in the context of what story we're
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: trying to convey, this is.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: What needs to be illustrated.
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: And I cannot express enough to anyone listening just how
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: deeply beautiful this book is. Like, and again we're just
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: giving Tom Mandrake his flowers right now. But when we
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: talk about detail, like I just pulled out like one
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: of the main pages that it's off.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the one.
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: Now.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I got to post about that page because it it's
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: to me and I'm pretty sure Tom, I haven't asked
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: them about it, but I'm it feels like the layout
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: is inspired by Neil Adams Muhammad Ali versus Superman. There's
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: a famous shot of when Muhammad Ali fights Superman and
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: he's in the same corner and the crowd goes around
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: them just like that, And it's the same thing where
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: Neil did. All these famous people in the crowd, you know,
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: famous people at the time who would be there watching
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: that fight, while this was just all these people. And
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: again I wrote that page and I'm like, yo, Tom,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: there's a bunch of people in the crowd Jimmy's pouring
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: his hard out. The people really don't give a shit.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: They're doing whatever, you know. I was like, some are
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: looking at their phones, da da da da, da, et cetera.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: It's you know, maybe two three paragraphs at most, And
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: it's just the way when that, when that, I've looked
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: at those two pages for hours, I'm knockingna out of y'all. Like,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: especially from the pencils to the inks and everything. I've
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: just looked at those pages over and over and over again.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: And the amount of detail that that man put into
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: that shit is it's flabbergast, the amount.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Of detailing story because as you just, guys, didn't give
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: him a lot like you just I would imagine it's
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: maybe a paragraph if that.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: And he went and gave you.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: A book, yeah, out of one page or two pages
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: if you will, like yep. And what you said about
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: the detailing, And that's the other part why I.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Feel like this book is so beautiful.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: The detailing is insane because you can really get into
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: the images four hours and really revisit. This has a
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: lot of replay, as they want to say, the replay
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: value of something.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: This has a lot of it in it.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: The story itself, obviously, but also just in the imagery,
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: like I was taken aback by looking at characters where
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: they're wearing like reflective material or they have something in
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: their eyes, you know, like a monocle on or something
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: like that, and you can see the reflection of Jimmy
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: and the aura coming off of him, and then the
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: reflection of the aura onto somebody else, and then someone
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: else's reflection or image in someone's phone, you know, refracting
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: light like stuff that you just wouldn't think someone would
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: think about. And I feel like that coupled with how
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: you two approach this story, like you all three three before,
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: but all of you really and and just back to
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: YouTube specifically, you guys really took this to a place where.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: No one thought about it.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: No one thought about, let's give Jimmy his respect and
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: let's show a story.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: Let's tell a story in this way in space right
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: like it's.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: And I think and you kind of said that earlier
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Mellow about you know, being on the bringing some of
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: the outside inside you guys, your unique perspective, the way
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: that you approach this this is why this works. This
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: is why this is a success to a book, regardless
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: of how many copies itsels. This is why this matters,
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: and this is why this is so impactful. Yeah, we're
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: gonna we're winding down now. I want to know who
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: wrote this line in the book. Home may not be
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: the place you are from the people.
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: You live for.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Oh shit, I think that's mellow. Yeah, I think that's you. Yeah,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: remember that. That's a good one.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: I'm asking because when I said the way I cried,
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: m M, I was just like, why do this to man?
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: You would have thought my firstborn got taken from me
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: the way I was crying. And it hit me deep
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: because in real life and in fiction, you you see
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: between you know, real people and characters and stuff, that
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: strength of what it means to have like that adopted
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: or that chosen family, and to focus your strengths on
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: not necessarily where you from or what people think you
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: should be or what your background is. It's just like,
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: I'm going to create a space and a home for
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: me with people that I love that I will fight for.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: It was just very very deep to me, and it
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: reminded me of stories like like shows like Polls, where
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: you get into those situations where you have chosen family, right,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: like and a lot of times because you have no choice, right,
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: but you need that support in that space.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: And this wasn't really a question.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: I just wanted to say that that that line messed
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: me up.
- 1:07:34Speaker 6: I appreciate that. That's yeah, I definitely was kind of
- 1:07:38Speaker 6: leaning into I mean, since we wrote it, the world
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: has gotten like a little, not a little, it's done
- 1:07:44Speaker 6: a lot weird, a lot worse, yeah, and a lot
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: of respects. And there's going to be more people like
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: like the indigenous folks within like the circuit and uh,
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: and there's going to be moreeople who are going to
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: feel this placed. It's going to be more like even
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: more the corporations, but governments that are going to be
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: like pushing towards that and be responsible for that. And
- 1:08:12Speaker 6: it's uh, it's not too similar to like the theme
- 1:08:15Speaker 6: and ths that or ragnar Rock or whatever, because it's
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: like it's an entire culture. It gets moved somewhere, but
- 1:08:25Speaker 6: that doesn't go away. The culture doesn't go away, like
- 1:08:28Speaker 6: no matter how many people you take away, no matter
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: what you think you've done to them, it doesn't go away,
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: like like it exists within everyone that is still there
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: and you keep living for that you keep living for
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: those people, you keep living for all those reasons, and
- 1:08:43Speaker 6: I've definitely felt that the past few years, and I'm happy.
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: I'm happy you got to test somebody, so that means
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: a lot. Thank you.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Yeah, And I'm really happy to hear that because I
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: remember you were talking about that and then you would
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: talk about the made some noise like stuff, and it's
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: it's so interested in me that far as says like,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I'd really like to hear people you know and talk
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: to people about it, especially you talked downa because I know,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: you know, you're very knowledgeable and you pay attention, you know,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: and you're very detailer in it. So it's really dope
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: to hear all this type of stuff that people are
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: picking up on because like I remember the speech that
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: comes from, but I didn't remember that line exactly, and
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: that's you know, that's a very crazy ass lines.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: That line has been in my head for now weeks
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: like stuff. It always comes up at least once.
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: A day, and that means a lot. I hear all
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: the time. I know you wouldn't hold back. If anything,
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: you would in both of our faces and suck.
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: And I'd be like, ah, that's kind of whack.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: No, I mean, and I know it's like I know,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: And that's the other part, Like I know it's hard
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: for people to hear at least who know this show.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: They're just like, oh, that's your.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: Brother, you know, and you knew Mellow and you just
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: loving it because it's them. And I'm just like, no,
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: not at any point on this show. And me personally,
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: would I like, if something is whack, I'm a say that.
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: Or I'm gonna have some questions.
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: Yeah, questions.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: I asked questions like, well, what made you and you know,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: and I don't what made you thought that was a
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: good idea? I I I did not feel any of
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: that stuff, Like god, damn, why did what was they thinking?
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: I was just like, damn, what did they not think of?
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Like this ship blew my mind? This ship blew my mind?
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: And and I really hope that other people like read
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: or just are intrigued by you know, who know nothing
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: about Jimmy, because at the end of the day, this
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: book teaches you a lot and it makes you want
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: to learn more, Like I legit wanted to, like, well,
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: let me go listen to more of his music. Besides
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: like the two three songs that I know, right, let
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: me go read more about him. I don't know if
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: there's any documentaries out something that I could trust, Like
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: I want to know who this guy really was, right
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: and what is it?
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: And also the other part about it? What are what
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: have people not told me about what this is?
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: I actually wonder what will be released now after this
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: one big shot out that we haven't given yet that
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: should be very clear. What is Janie Hendricks Jimmy Hendricks'
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: younger sister who's been like on the project before we
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: were there obviously, and she was always trying to find
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: like what the right story is. All she knows that
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: she wanted to be sci fi and that they were
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: very lucky to get time on the project, and so
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: came today we had to talk to her about like,
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: all right, so this is what our idea is, and
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: that is that. That is one of the wildest meetings
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: I've ever been in in my life. It was like
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: us too. It was Janie and it was our editor
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: who was like a who really didn't have much to
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: say the conversation, but it was a large conversation of
- 1:11:57Speaker 6: just about like what she has experienced being in an
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: industry things that she had seen Jimmy due to show
- 1:12:04Speaker 6: that he wasn't just a passive dude, and how hard
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: it was for him and how the image was hard
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: on him, and that like we had like actually like
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: found something that no one else would say about him
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: and uh and like her I couldn't tell if it
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: was her assistant, her attorney was on the call too, yeah,
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: and like and like we got like a while out
- 1:12:34Speaker 6: of her, out of her during that conversation that we're like, Okay,
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: this may this may happen. We make it this book
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: and like that. And it was just these conversations where
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: I don't want to tell the stories that she told us.
- 1:12:47Speaker 6: We'll keep those, We'll keep those with her about things
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: that like Jimmy went through and what he did and
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: stuff like that. But he was a tough dude and
- 1:12:56Speaker 6: seeing someone where like I'm sure she was going into
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: this about like all right, this would be a fun
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: commercial project and everything like that, and then we had
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: that conversation and then it turned into something different. Ye,
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: And that is that is one of the best moments
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: of my career to think that like Jamie Hendricks was
- 1:13:17Speaker 6: just like, y'all are doing something that is like important,
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: and and every note is she gave leaned into that
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: instead of just like I wanted to be like like
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: real magical or anything like that. And and like her
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: immediate note when we went into the meeting was just like,
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: never make him a win, like never never make him
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: like soft or anything like that, because he wasn't. And
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: we had immediately understood it from just digging into the
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: corners of Jimmy that a lot of people don't talk
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: about and we're just like, we know who he is.
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: And and she was like, all right, you figured it out.
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: And graduations, So that was that's such a wild, wild
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: moment in your life to figure that out.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's this whole thing, like you said, it goes
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: back to that thing like where it's just so it's
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: to this day, even though it's out, it's really hard
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: for me to understand, you know, like what the fuck
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: we did and what happened here, because you know, it's
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: they don't do shit, you know, and rightfully so, and
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: that's something that I've had to deal with. I've seen
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: a lot of weird comments, you know, since this book
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: came out, where people are more concerned with Janie and
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: the estate and moves they've made and da dah da
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: da da, And I'm like, look, you're probably wearing nikes,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: I don't want to hear it.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: You know, shut the fuck up with yourself, write your
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: shit and read the book or don't, because we didn't
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: write the book with any of that in mind. You know,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: we're not thinking of that when we're writing this book.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: We're writing this book to tell the story that we
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: wanted to tell. And to me, the fact that Jennie
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: let us tell this story is really fucking out of
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: control considering what.
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: There it is.
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: Really do you know how many projects would turn down.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Probably Andre three thousand as a as a movie that
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: won't that does not feature music. I was talking about
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: this movie today with a shout out truck Creemar and
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: all hip hop. I'm not even sure if it ever
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: came out. He did, but they wouldn't allow It's not
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: license at all because they would not allow him to
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: use the music at all. So this book has his
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: lyrics in it. You know, we were granted full right
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: to use any lyric we could find anything we could
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: think of, all the imagery from you know, the library,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: and it's that's just crazy, you know what I mean.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, and she's right though in a lot
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: of way. And that's something that like I've learned dealing
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: with some of the fandom. And I was talking about
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: this earlier because like somebody they was like or not today,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: but they were like, oh, they put this out, but
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: they don't put out black Gold.
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: I don't know what it is. It might be some
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: album or something.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: And like, as one of the massive Prince fans, Maria
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Ection was dog, there ain't been anything Prince his Princess
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: of the State has put out since it is passing
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: that I've really been like, damn, I wish they put
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: out before he passed.
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: You know, It's all been.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Cool music, but it's like it ain't what he put
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: out while he was alive. I don't know why Janey
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: don't release this and that, but this is what she
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: did choose to release, and I think it's fantastic, And.
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: Yeah, it's ill.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: It's really ill to me that it's like whoa, like,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: you know, out of everything this is out there now.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: I mean it's really, for me, the most true extension
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: of what an artist is like to come into a
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: different medium all together. Like I mean, I said, I
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: heard the music, but this is not a record or
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: it mean, you can view it if you want to.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: You could view it as a soundtrack as a record,
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: but this is a graphic novel and to be able
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: to influence and cross genres and still be very true
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: to this person and who he was and who he
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: ultimately is, because this is a living to me, there's
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: a living document, because this is something that people are
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: gonna catch at different stages of their life as well.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: There's gonna be things that people catch a year from now,
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: people catch next week, people that you never thought would
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: touch this, you know what I mean. So I'm just
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: really happy, and I'm saying I think this is a
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: very inspiring story, and this story in the book itself,
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: but also the story of you guys, and also just
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: for people who are listening about how life comes together.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: And yeah, adults once again went a shout out Jane,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: because like Melo said, that shit was really crazy. Like again,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: I just I guess in a moment, I try and
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: not think of it, you know, but it was like
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: when I remember, you know, during that meeting and she's like,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: oh yeah, you know, I'm like, what and then afterwards
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: when she's like, okay, you know, you guys got it,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: it's like what And then the there is definitely a
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: lot more notes like in the first two acts, but
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I remember the one that fucked me up was when
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: we turned in at three and Janie's note was like, oh,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: this is great, all right, go ahead and finish it up.
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: Did you expect the this is trash? What did you expect?
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: No?
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I expected more Okay, this, this and this, you know,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: what about this, this and this? Like there was some
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: there was, there was more not changing, but there was
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: more like questions, and you know, in the first two
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: ads it was more like because she was still at
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: that point unsure, you know, she didn't know us for anything,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: and she was still just like Mellow said, you know,
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: he was like, where are we going with this, guys?
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: You know, And so it's basically in the first two ads,
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: but by the third that when she got that, she
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: was like, oh, okay, these motherfuckerss cooking and they know
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: what they're cooking, you know, And we did buy then,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: I mean, we knew before that, but it's just like,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: you know, when you get to that point, you really
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: start to see it and that was just that was
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: you know, that is insane to me because, like I say,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Andre does not have them. You know, it's like there's
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: so many people who tried to do things with the
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: state and it just did not happen. And this did
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: you know, it is sitting here in front of my
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: like I'm looking at I'm holding the fun I'm holding
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: it and it doesn't feel real.
- 1:19:17Speaker 6: There's a yeah, I guess I haven't given you your
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: flowers and that yet that means that got his first
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: no notes.
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: I did. It was awesome.
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: It feels good.
- 1:19:29Speaker 6: That's coveted. But you to get to get no notes
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: on the project you're getting paid for it is the
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: best possible feeling. Like we're working on the TV show.
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: You get at least like minimum for an episode is
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: like ten notes passes, and everyone's just trying to work
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: together to figure out how they could consolidate their notes
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: so they'll crush you daily. And so you're spending like
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: three weeks just with a lot topic your hand because
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: you're just putting in all these notes. And then it
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: for comics. For comics is a little less because don't
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: pay you. But at the same time, you do have
- 1:20:11Speaker 6: to keep going back there. There are like uh, not
- 1:20:16Speaker 6: getting two into details, but there are like Blade Runner
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: books where I've had to come in fourth quarter and
- 1:20:22Speaker 6: change a lot just to make sure that the books
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: get out the door and then back out out of
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: the way. Name not on the book, just like all right,
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: the franchise is still rolling kind of thing, and like
- 1:20:33Speaker 6: it's but that's not a great feeling forever was the
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: writers at that moment and the fact that you get
- 1:20:40Speaker 6: a no notes on your first time out writing a
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: book is a big deal. So like yeah, like I
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: just want to take my hat off the bend on.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: Them and thank you. And that was another thing as
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: you're writing it. I remember like I'd send script pages
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: to Mellow and he'd be like, Okay, that's good.
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: And I'm.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: You know, but I had I had to accept that
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: it really was good.
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Like that's when I was like, he was just like, nah,
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: you know it's good, Like you got you know, we
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: said write this, you wrote that it works, everything works
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: and it's dope, you know, And I would be I
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: was really like, come on, Mellow, like tell me you
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: know this line don't work, tell me that line?
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: Did you did this? Did this project help you overcome
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: self doubt.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: No, I'm talking myself today. Yeah, in one way, it does.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: Like in one way, it's like yes, because it does
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: give me the confidence where I can tell somebody, na, nigga,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like I know what I'm
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: doing and I can explain to you why this worked
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: and why I did this and things of that nature.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: And I, you know, through this process for Melow, I
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: learned a lot about world Bud and how to create
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: something and how to build that skeleton which I sometimes
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: have issues with, and also know I can call him
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: up and be like, Yo, I need help, you know
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: with the Skeeleton real quick, and yeah, well fuck that, nigga,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: see tomorrow, nigga, because I need help with the Stelton
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: right now. But No, it did give me a lot
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: of confidence in that matter, because it's like I can
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: see this thing and I'm like, yo, you know, like and.
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: Like you were talking about Tytown are.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Like I wrote this with you in mind, you know,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: I wrote this with like the Joe Illages in mind.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: The people you know, the people I'll big fans of
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: who through the years of for all nerds, I've gotten
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: to know a lot of these people who I've been
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: big fans of, who I talk about their books all
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: the time. So I had to be like, nah, these
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: people are going to read my books like I've read
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: their book.
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: So I had to write it for them.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: And I wrote it for the Comet fan and myself
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: and for like the for all nerds critic, you know,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I wrote it for all these types of side so
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: myself as well. So I was like, okay, how can
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: I you know, And I still look at they are
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: parts of it where I can be.
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: Like, mmmm, well, Ben, you know, you know, but.
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: Yeah, but overall, yeah, that's why you don't. But overall, like.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: I've at the same time, since I've had it, I've
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: picked it up and like I'll read two pages and
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: I'm like, God, damn, that shit really worked, you know,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: Like those two pages just by themselves really working.
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: And I read another two pages, I'm like, Yo, these
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: really worked.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: And I'll read on some of the Mellow did and
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: I'm like, Wow, you really killed that shit, And so like, overall,
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: like there might be things I would change, of course,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: there's always things I would make better, But overall, like
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Mellow Sudden, I'm super dumb, proud of this, and I
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: really don't know, you know, I want to do more
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: things I could just like he was talking about, like Aaliyah,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: you know, just so many different artists I can imagine
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: doing this type of treatment too.
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: I want to say I won't do anything doper than this,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: but I'm sure I will. But this ship is doing
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: you know, it's one of some things. It's just it's
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: always going to be one of the things, not only
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: because it's my first thing, it's also just because it's.
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: It's fucking Jimmy Hendris. Man, it's just crazy, like it's unreal.
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: Is it too early to ask for a sequel?
- 1:24:14Speaker 6: No?
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: Never, are we getting a sequel? Will the Brothers come
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: together again?
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: I might have some help on the skeleton.
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: I need some help, Tuck.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: It might be the brother featuring the Brothers. Oh my god,
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: I'm not sure how much you know? Well, yeah, we'll
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: see you guys.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Like, what are you guys doing to continue to promote
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: and get the word out about Jimmy?
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: I mean, we are right here on fall On Eard's
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: the greatest podcast in the universe.
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: Better say that? What else?
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I've done too many interviews and podcasts and I'm down
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: to do as many more as possible.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: So are you guys gonna actually like visit different bookstores?
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: Oh?
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: Yeah, different events and stuff.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely, I've been doing that.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: Well.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: Actually, this weekend, Saturday, September seventh, I'll be at Peace
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: and Riot in Brooklyn signing copies. And then the fifteenth
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: I'll be at Manifest in Brooklyn doing a little event there.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: And right now I'm planning something with Gulf Coast Cosmos
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Comic Shop down the only black owned comet store in Texas,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: and they're in Houston, and I'll be doing something with them.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: We're actually planning a whole weekend perhaps in Houston Black Friday. Yeah,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Black that weekend isn't.
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: In this Maybe we'll talk about that later. Maybe we
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: have to redact this. But to book my show up
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: in a very special historic place, Oh.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: It should be there already. We can say that it
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: should be in the Smithsonian already. It should definitely be
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: in the.
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: National Museum African American History and Culture.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Yes, the bookstore, it should already been in their shout
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: out to my bro leslie over there. But yeah, it
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: should already be up in that joint. And if not Leslie,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: we got talk fanthers. Don't make me look.
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: Bad on the show. Fam. I know you listening.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: By the way, if y'all missed it, Ben and I
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: actually spoke at the black Sonian last year, and you
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: know we gave me nice talk talk.
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: So yeah, you should already be there.
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: What about you.
- 1:26:28Speaker 6: I'm not going nowhere. I gotta just keep walking around
- 1:26:35Speaker 6: being d list, famous.
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: Des famous, store be getting checks though, don't don't sleep.
- 1:26:43Speaker 6: That's the best kind of things.
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: I don't ever want to be about this.
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: Respect it, not famous, so you know what you respect it?
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: I want.
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: I want. I want my banker, I want my bank
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: account of your respected.
- 1:27:01Speaker 6: I don't know. I don't want no way to spend
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: my food a little.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: But see that what I'm saying. If they don't know me,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: they don't have to. It's like they don't have to
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: respect me at all. They just have to, you know,
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: treat me like a human being.
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: That what I mean.
- 1:27:11Speaker 6: I don't need you hate reviews, I mean, but you
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: hate negative reviews. You would be like, I don't mind writer,
- 1:27:18Speaker 6: I don't mind saying that.
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: I don't mind.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: Negative reviews when they're intelligently, when they when they have
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: points like I mind when.
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: Like I minded, or a few.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: When they said that it didn't pass the Bechdel tests. Yeah,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: because I feel like the book does I get it.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: Could you could argue it doesn't, but I think you're
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: splitting hairs at that point.
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: It's it's it's I think they were just I don't
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: know a woman.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: Since that that's test reflects you know, women are represented
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: in the book that they have interactions with each other
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: without the president of the man, or they're not doing
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: things specifically for a man. I can see how you
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: can twist it to be that, but it's not all
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: the one man.
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: That's wild to me if you twisted to be that,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: because like I do say that they have a specific
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: conversation where it starts off about the man, but then
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: it quickly turns to their reactions to fascism and how
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: each of them approach it. So I don't think that's
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: about men at all unless.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: You're you know, but don't have to say you don't
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: take lightly to negative.
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: I just don't take lightly to any review.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: I like, I like you know, discussion because I am
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: because I've come from both sides of it, and that's
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: why I don't take lightly to these things because I
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: know the power that we have just as much as
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: the power as the creators have. So I feel like,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: don't say things that aren't, you know, unless you really
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: put And I felt like that reviewer in general did
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: not read the book that well, you know, and so
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: that would and because of that, they would say things
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: like that, And so that was my thing. Any comic
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: cons yeah, New York, you know, mellow and shit.
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: I've never yet to hear Melo say he was going
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: to show up somewhere. He was just like they got it.
- 1:28:56Speaker 6: Everywhere. It's real far, you know, as long as far
- 1:29:00Speaker 6: since here. I think a lot of places I'll show
- 1:29:06Speaker 6: up will probably be It'll be very similar to what
- 1:29:08Speaker 6: I've done with like Blair Origins, which is I will
- 1:29:11Speaker 6: pop up somewhere within the top three shops in different
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: places in like the world. So like I did that
- 1:29:19Speaker 6: in Paris, I did that, and uh, like Tokyo has
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: like a few really dope American comic book shops because
- 1:29:28Speaker 6: American comic books is kind of jumping off their secretly.
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: I did that in Soul, I've done it in Mexico,
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: and like it, I'll be doing Adeicain with this book,
- 1:29:39Speaker 6: We're just gonna not be in America and just signing
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: stuff and then yeah, it'll be fun.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: And I guess in the case of Melow, if you
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: want people to find you, I don't know if you do,
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: but if you want me, if you want people to
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: find you in and hopefully great ways and maybe throw
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: your flowers or send you a check, Like, how can
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: they get in contact with you?
- 1:30:03Speaker 6: So my Vemo agent, you can my agent actually, uh yeah,
- 1:30:11Speaker 6: just hit up the like where on the same day
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: they dropped, uh, Blade Runner Tokyo also dropped as well.
- 1:30:20Speaker 6: That is a chapter two in like a big epic
- 1:30:24Speaker 6: trilogy I've been working on like the past five or
- 1:30:26Speaker 6: six years about lifelong them and it means a lot
- 1:30:31Speaker 6: to me. Uh you can, yeah, just follow my work.
- 1:30:35Speaker 6: I did. I did some some episodes of Station nineteen.
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: I'm actually pretty proud of. Yeah. Yeah, just follow my work.
- 1:30:42Speaker 6: You need a listening. I'm just telling you to go
- 1:30:45Speaker 6: watch Blue Giant. That's all I do online trying to
- 1:30:48Speaker 6: get people to watch that.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Actually, to follow Mellow find him yourself and follow him
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: on Twitter at least when he was tweeting. When he
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: was given to dropping gems about screenwriting and things like that,
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: Like you learn a lot.
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: You'd be surprised. I'm you can learn on the internet,
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: so I would definitely recommend that.
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: Ben.
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: Where can people find you besides right here on four
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: O nerds?
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, amazingly you can actually find me here
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: on this show as well. You know you can find
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: me here on four nerds. You can also find me
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: everywhere on the internet. And we're not doing brap? What happened?
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I feel, you know, do you want to?
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: Oh?
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: Did you?
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: Did you? Did you want that?
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: Sir?
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: I figured that was kind of weird for you to
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: do it.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, I've never gotten to do it,
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: you know, So like this is my moment, and I
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: feel like the audience has been waiting for this moment.
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: So real quick, real quick? Can you do a brap
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: real quick?
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: Mellow?
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: All right, all right, y'all, we're gonna do the brat
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: segment real quick. It's demanding it for hisself.
- 1:31:49Speaker 6: The rock.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: Rats first question and love of acting Prowess the Rock
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: or Vin Diesel.
- 1:32:04Speaker 6: The Rock.
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: Vin is like I know he's that. I know, I'm
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: like neither of the Rock. Yeah, I'll go the Rock.
- 1:32:19Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, it's not like it's like conversation.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: And I know Vin had that movie where he played
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: a lawyer. I've never seen it, but people said he
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: was actually acting in it. I don't believe him. But
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: you know, Okay, Vin has a twin brother that he
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: he doesn't talk about.
- 1:32:35Speaker 3: So I keep forkidding about that. That's crazy.
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: So he's a better actor.
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: That's insane to me.
- 1:32:45Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: The only reason I noticed is to a friend of
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: mine who is also a twin dated Vin, and so
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: she found out and she was quite distrusted because she
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: was like, how do you not put your brother? You know,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: you don't talk about the brother anything like. She couldn't
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: understand that being a twinter felt m hmm.
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: That's crazy. No, that's that is wild to me.
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: I have to this is this is I have to
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: ask this question Star Wars or Star Trek.
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: Star Trek.
- 1:33:12Speaker 5: Come on, man, this is me.
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: I'm glad it hasn't changed. I thought you always Star
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: Trek mellow.
- 1:33:17Speaker 5: Yeah, he's always been Star Trek.
- 1:33:19Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I don't like laser swords.
- 1:33:23Speaker 6: Uh he does.
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: He does admit that. Andor is the greatest thing ever made.
- 1:33:28Speaker 6: Yeah, and or is the best TV show ever made.
- 1:33:30Speaker 6: But at the same time.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: He also said it's better than it has any right
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: to be, which is a hard dist of Star Wars.
- 1:33:39Speaker 6: Have you have you watched the rest of the shows?
- 1:33:43Speaker 6: Like how how much is like obi Wan?
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: I do review these shows. I said that Obi Wan
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: was so forgettable that I don't even heard. Yeah, it's
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: not even worth talking about because I don't even remember it.
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: But at least you got a Soca, right.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: I actively dislike Ago, but.
- 1:33:58Speaker 6: But at least you got both, right.
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: I don't remember that.
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: At least he got like three seasons of the last
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: three seasons the Mandalorian, Oh god.
- 1:34:08Speaker 5: I remember that first one.
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: No thing is he ain't eating me up?
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: Because this is all things that I've talked about, Like
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: it's like, oh yeah, like yeah, you know Captain Obvious
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: over here, like the show is a terrible.
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: And I get it, but you know, it's like and
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: I was.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: Just watching the Ratha Con again the other day, and
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: that shit's amazing, So you know, like I love them both.
- 1:34:30Speaker 6: But then we go it over. I'll just say it
- 1:34:32Speaker 6: real quick. I think The Acolyte would have been a
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: really dope movie.
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I can see that.
- 1:34:39Speaker 6: Like it's one of those things where it's like it
- 1:34:42Speaker 6: is it does not have nearly enough meat to kind
- 1:34:46Speaker 6: of like carry a whole show. But like, imagine if
- 1:34:50Speaker 6: someone just walked up to you with like a one
- 1:34:52Speaker 6: page outline and they told you what would happened on
- 1:34:54Speaker 6: the show, he'd be like, that's ship is amazing, So
- 1:35:00Speaker 6: why does it like always kind of like and it
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: And I do agree with people where like it deserved
- 1:35:08Speaker 6: more time because it was made. It was made by
- 1:35:11Speaker 6: a lot of people who still needed like they still
- 1:35:17Speaker 6: needed help, especially working in like that universe, coming from
- 1:35:20Speaker 6: somebody that worked at Disney, and there's a lot of technology.
- 1:35:23Speaker 6: It's very very hard that people have to hold your
- 1:35:25Speaker 6: hand because they created the technology for you to work with.
- 1:35:29Speaker 6: And like it's it's it's complex in a way where
- 1:35:34Speaker 6: it's just like if it was like either a movie,
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: either it needed to be a whole lot shorter as
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: a movie or need to be longer as a procedural
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: about Jedi and then they would get picked off until
- 1:35:46Speaker 6: the end of the season, then it would have been
- 1:35:48Speaker 6: really well.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: But I mean that just goes back to what you
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: were saying, Mellow that we get it right ninety something
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: percent of the time on the show, because we we
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: were saying that throughout it, and it was one of
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: the things where it's like, I personally can't remember a
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: show where I was so disgusted with it and then
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: something I was like, oh, wait a minute, if you've
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: just done this for no get you know.
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: That that never happens for it to be like, you know,
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: this is this is not the greatest thing we've we've
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: encountered to wait a minute, We're going somewhere and ingammord
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: with it by then like they got they gotta continue
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: the story.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that was That's insane. Shout out to Leslie and
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: them over there, because that was like.
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: What a twist, what a tweet?
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: I'm Blade from nineteen ninety eight or Blade from two
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: thousand and four?
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: Was he snipes, uh wait two thousand and four. Who's
- 1:36:47Speaker 6: two thousand and four.
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: And wovereh twenty twenty four? Excuse me, twenty twenty four.
- 1:36:53Speaker 6: I have not seen that point of Wolverine. I just
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: don't like family guy, so play yeah, good for me.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: Easy Plaid nineteen ninety eighty even question, yeah, okay, all right,
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: same reason I don't like family got much either.
- 1:37:09Speaker 6: Yeah, likes be like he remember this, that's fun right,
- 1:37:13Speaker 6: remember this?
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: That's you don't like those going back?
- 1:37:15Speaker 5: So I haven't had McDonald's in a long time.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: The reason we were just we were just talking about
- 1:37:22Speaker 6: like culture like a little while ago. The more that
- 1:37:24Speaker 6: you like kind of just like look at Echo the past.
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: Culture dies because you never gonna get anything newer. And
- 1:37:32Speaker 6: that's that's what Disney is now. It's a factory of nostalgia. Sorry,
- 1:37:35Speaker 6: this supposed to be fast, Okay, it's okay.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: This is great. Everyone's listening, like.
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: Yeah, nostalgia. That that's a great name for a podcast
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: like that.
- 1:37:46Speaker 6: Sounds like a very red big red flag and some
- 1:37:49Speaker 6: ship I never click on, you know.
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. It's funny your melow.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: We have to say this shit because I'm like, that's
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: like that caravan or garbage one that I never click on.
- 1:37:58Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: It's this YouTube channel care and they're always like I
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: think they do that to be controversial, you know, like
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: artist is a tarvan, a garbage movie, and I'm just like, never,
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: you know, how can I block this channel?
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: Batman versus Superman.
- 1:38:16Speaker 5: Superman for me, Superman for me too.
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: Do you guys hate Batman that much?
- 1:38:21Speaker 5: Nah?
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: I just love All Star Superman and I love what
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Superman represents to me, Like, you know, the idea of
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: like someone who sees the best in us, you know,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: and someone who's not from this culture but wants what
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: we could be, you know, like wants us to achieve
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: what we don't see in ourselves.
- 1:38:42Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: I just think that's so dope, Like that's fucking incredible.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: And someone who has the power and doesn't abuse it,
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: you know, like because everyone always wants to make the
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: evil Superman, I think that's so weak and easy writing
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: to me, versus the hard writing is writing someone who
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: has the power and doesn't amuse it. Like that's fucking
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: incredible writing when you do that, right.
- 1:39:04Speaker 6: Yeah. Also, you know eleven twenty twenty four where men
- 1:39:08Speaker 6: are weirder than they have been in my lifetime right now,
- 1:39:12Speaker 6: and it's just.
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: It's like they're saying it more. That's the thing. It's
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: like they're saying we're weird, you know.
- 1:39:18Speaker 6: In a world where everybody is pretending that they're Batman.
- 1:39:22Speaker 6: I want a Superman around all the time.
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: Word, gotcha, that's that's real.
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: I'm just a super villains. I'm like, give me that power.
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: I'm fucking running away with them, going so Vesper or
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: Jimmy Jimmy for me?
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: Actually, yeah, I think Vesper is more complex, I'll say, and.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: This is in purple haze for those who are trying
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: to figure out in the graphic novel.
- 1:39:57Speaker 6: Like Vesper so so Jimmy. Jimmy is on kind of
- 1:40:02Speaker 6: like a very specific path of rediscovering who he is,
- 1:40:06Speaker 6: and while Vesper is on like a is on a
- 1:40:10Speaker 6: similar path, hers is a bit more cloudy. Mm hmm.
- 1:40:14Speaker 6: There's always going to be a level of like like
- 1:40:17Speaker 6: I'm always going to have to sell a little bit
- 1:40:19Speaker 6: to get the money and everything like that. And that's like,
- 1:40:22Speaker 6: you know, like as we were saying before, like that's
- 1:40:25Speaker 6: not something that you know, like you like people got
- 1:40:28Speaker 6: to do that. She got to bring the money back
- 1:40:30Speaker 6: to a place where there's no money coming in at all,
- 1:40:33Speaker 6: and she's got to be a part of that community
- 1:40:34Speaker 6: and everything. But at the same time, like she she's
- 1:40:40Speaker 6: also at a place where like if I don't know,
- 1:40:44Speaker 6: I don't want to say too much about about what
- 1:40:47Speaker 6: could potentially happen in the sequels, but she would be
- 1:40:51Speaker 6: very she would still be very, very complicated in a way.
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: Definitely.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: Yeah, your answer, Ben, I don't know if you get
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: an answer, I.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Think it's I think probably my answer is Vesper. But
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: it's like it's the opposite of the Superman Batman because
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: I think of Jimmy Moore as the Superman. I think
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: Investment is more of our Batman. And because that because
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: I'm writing her, I think I'm like, I don't know,
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: but it's tough because like I really enjoyed writing Hindrids,
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: you know that. I was like, and it was it
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: was very challenging, you know, and giving him words is
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: of a challenge. But I just it was like Vesper
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: and Rayner just really and I was like going back
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: to something I wanted to ask you as a woman,
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: Like I was really like, okay, I was thinking of
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: my sister, you know, and the other women, and I
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: was really like trying to get like, Vestment Rayner's relationship
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: is more is like me and my sister's relationship in
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: some ways. A lot of the shit that goes into that,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: and so I was really interested in capturing that. I
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: want to know how you felt about them, like did
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: they feel like real women?
- 1:41:55Speaker 5: To you having a real you know life.
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: They felt like sisters first and foremost.
- 1:41:59Speaker 5: That's awesome. That's fucking dope.
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: That's the first thing I took a with that.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: It reminded me a little bit about me and my sister, like,
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: you know, like the camaraderie, the rivalry, like and I'm
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: talking about light not like.
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: I'm jealous of my sister type shit.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: No, no, Like it just felt like a sibling, like
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: a real sibling situation, you know, like sometimes you're fighting,
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: sometimes you're there, but at the end of the day,
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: you only want what's best if you truly love that sibling.
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: Because some people don't fuck with these siblings. It was
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: clear that the love was there.
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: That's awesome and that so that like yeah, that and
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: because I think because Hendrix is the known even though
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: he's not known, you know, and our version of him
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: is a unique character, because Vesper is a unique you know,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: like out of the blue creation, I think to me,
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna choose her.
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: Okay, very good. This is the longest rap session ever,
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: but I appreciate the feedback.
- 1:42:53Speaker 6: He gave a question to you.
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: My god, damn, I'm joking. Just two more, Just two more.
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: Yep, in any medium such as movies, TV, film, books, whatever,
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: what character's death hurt either most.
- 1:43:08Speaker 5: I want to hear Mellows first.
- 1:43:10Speaker 6: I say it every time I'm born her Winnifred Burkle,
- 1:43:15Speaker 6: Who is that again? So it was she was a character,
- 1:43:19Speaker 6: an angel.
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: Like angel, and.
- 1:43:25Speaker 6: It was the best setup for a character death I
- 1:43:29Speaker 6: have ever seen, where like she finally ended up in
- 1:43:33Speaker 6: an episode before with the person she was going to
- 1:43:35Speaker 6: be in a relationship with, and everything like that. The
- 1:43:38Speaker 6: characters are in this place where they've got like everything
- 1:43:39Speaker 6: they want, they own the most evil empire in the world.
- 1:43:44Speaker 6: And then she gets this virus inside of her body
- 1:43:49Speaker 6: that is actually a demon and it's like ripping her
- 1:43:51Speaker 6: soul apart, and they're all individually trying to find ways
- 1:43:56Speaker 6: to save her, and like they usually do their superheroes,
- 1:43:59Speaker 6: but this one time they every single one of them
- 1:44:01Speaker 6: fails and so when they come back, she's a different character.
- 1:44:07Speaker 6: She is now like the and like they usually are
- 1:44:09Speaker 6: just like, Okay, we could go to hell and we
- 1:44:10Speaker 6: can bring her back. They're like there's nothing less, Like
- 1:44:12Speaker 6: her soul was like ripped apart in the vour, she
- 1:44:15Speaker 6: doesn't exist, and having these characters breathe in a way
- 1:44:21Speaker 6: that they made the audience grieve at the same time
- 1:44:25Speaker 6: because they're they're like, the worst thing that could happen
- 1:44:28Speaker 6: is that her body is still around and talking to us,
- 1:44:32Speaker 6: and it's like this really evil woman who's on our side,
- 1:44:36Speaker 6: but we just can't, like, there's there's nothing we can
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: really do. There's there's there's we just gotta like look
- 1:44:42Speaker 6: at her face, which looks like a corpse, is blue
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: and like and like she can't smile or anything. It's
- 1:44:49Speaker 6: just like frozen in the face that she died with
- 1:44:53Speaker 6: when she talks to them. But she's on the team,
- 1:44:56Speaker 6: she's still on missions with them, and she just looks
- 1:44:58Speaker 6: like a corpse the whole time, and uh, it is
- 1:45:01Speaker 6: incredibly powerful and like every time they talk to her,
- 1:45:05Speaker 6: they still say things to her like it's her and
- 1:45:08Speaker 6: it emon's like, I don't know what the talk like,
- 1:45:13Speaker 6: you're all like so small, I am so old, Like
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: y'all are like have the lifespan of flies to me,
- 1:45:19Speaker 6: Why do I care about any of this?
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: That's heartbreaking?
- 1:45:22Speaker 6: Yeah, heartbreaking. Yeah, that's my favorite.
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: That reminds me of In a recent X Men run
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: by Hickman, when Nimrod just created. He's created from like
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: part of him is the memories of this doctor. And
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: the doctor is married to this other woman, and so
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: the woman's basically trying to save you know, at least
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: her doctor's mind. And at first it works, and then
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: the mn attack, and when they attack, they destroyed part
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: of Nimrod and that had that doctor's mind in it.
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: And so afterwards she's like, you know, are you stood there?
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: And he's like, sorry, doctor.
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: You know that's basically the fonts like, sorry, I have
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: very bad news for you.
- 1:46:07Speaker 5: But no, but for me. Oh, I'll try.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: The ones that fucked me up as a child were
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: Guardian and Alpha Flight because it's super surprising, and Cipher
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: and New Mutants because it's so brutal and also surprising,
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: and because I just related to Cipher so much. But
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: something more I don't really want to. I guess I
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: can spoil. It's been years, right, is I mean it's
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: a lot of the characters in Wicked and Divine. Yeah,
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: but the Morgan. When the Morgan dies and when Bafomet
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: her lover, Bajame has to choose rather to resurrect her
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: and die himself and just keep this circle going or
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: to use her life to save three lives of three
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: other characters in The Wicked and Divine. It's such a
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: moment for me, and the way that McKelvey Jamie does
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: the art and he's looking because she basically has three
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: incarnations as the Morrigan, and he's looking at all three
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: of them, and he has a different emotional look towards
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: each one of them, like one is pure regret because
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: that's the pure side of her. Then one is like
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: the monster side of her, and he's like, well, it's probably better.
- 1:47:19Speaker 5: That you're going, you know.
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: And then the other side is the one that he's
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: been loving all the time. And it's those three expressions
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: and just his choice and everything that goes into that
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: is that. And then also probably die deodon isis from
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: Wicked and Divine is also fucking ruins me just thinking
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: about it. And I hate the goddamn song one more
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: time now because of that fucking book.
- 1:47:44Speaker 6: So yeah, I'm gonna throw like a real quick one
- 1:47:48Speaker 6: in real quick. Yeah, I know you've been watching House
- 1:47:51Speaker 6: of the Dragon, right, Yeah, it's this is real random.
- 1:47:56Speaker 6: Remember when they had all the people that were they
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: thought were uh worthy bastards because for some reason, the
- 1:48:07Speaker 6: guy who stepped up first, who had like the deformed Yeah,
- 1:48:13Speaker 6: when he died, I was like, I think I'm done
- 1:48:15Speaker 6: with the show. I actually haven't seen past that because
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: like it's such.
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: Far for you.
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: I think it was like the reason why, because it's
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: such a choice to kill a character who is just
- 1:48:29Speaker 6: like and like show that he was the first to
- 1:48:31Speaker 6: step up his face oud of deformity, so that way
- 1:48:34Speaker 6: it tells you the life that he was living and
- 1:48:38Speaker 6: that like this was his last sign of hope and
- 1:48:40Speaker 6: that like just kill him right there, and and then
- 1:48:43Speaker 6: like that summed up what they plan to do with
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: the show for me in that one decision, as like
- 1:48:50Speaker 6: this is going to end bad, like horribly for for everybody,
- 1:48:55Speaker 6: and like and like that, moments like that were like
- 1:48:57Speaker 6: very normalized, and I was like, I think, I'm all right,
- 1:49:00Speaker 6: I think of so, I haven't actually seen the rest
- 1:49:02Speaker 6: of the.
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: Season, and you're I mean, it's more barbecuing, so get worse.
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: It's gonna get worse.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: It's going to get worse, and all right, because of that,
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: I gotta throw in one more and it's fucking Andy
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: serkis on fucking and Or because all you gotta fucking
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: do is show me that fucking imagery of that last
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: shot of.
- 1:49:21Speaker 5: Jail, and I'm fucking losing it.
- 1:49:25Speaker 3: So it's like, yeah, it's okay, No, I know about this.
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: It's okay, I know.
- 1:49:33Speaker 5: I mean, I've been telling you to watch it for months.
- 1:49:35Speaker 3: Since y'all talking about it.
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: Just not it but answers, multiple answers, just recently I
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: have a lot, but just recently regular Bow and X
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: ME ninety seven that that heart that continues to hurt
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: my heart.
- 1:49:48Speaker 5: I fansheet was worse than Nigga just flying away and
- 1:49:54Speaker 5: I don't.
- 1:49:55Speaker 7: Give a fuck about Sheet about I think that was
- 1:49:59Speaker 7: a think that was probably the best written episode of
- 1:50:02Speaker 7: television this year, like like every even like the side
- 1:50:06Speaker 7: stories of like Cyclops going off.
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: That was remember me, right, that's the one I got
- 1:50:10Speaker 3: the im nod.
- 1:50:11Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I think that's uh the two best episodes
- 1:50:14Speaker 6: of television I've seen written this year. Where that in
- 1:50:17Speaker 6: the pilot for Showgun.
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: And Shortgun another incredible series. Yeah, yeah, okay. It's the
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: last question. If you can have any one one superpower,
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: what would it be.
- 1:50:38Speaker 6: I'll go super speed, all right, Like you're.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: Talking about reverse flash types of you talking about flash like.
- 1:50:46Speaker 6: Uh, like yeah, like full on. I mean like they
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: they're pretty equal, right.
- 1:50:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean just in terms of what your intentions are.
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: How about that?
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: Well, yeah, damn I got because I was. I mean yeah,
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: from my mind, I probably not too because it's probably
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: different reasons. But like it's either flight, teleportation, and then
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: it goes super speed, and I go with super speed
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: out of all three of those because I can use
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: that one to get away like flight or teleportation. Like
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: you know, I'm on an island in no time. And
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: I can also become an NBA baller and you know,
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: get rich.
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: They wouldn't let you in the league cheating you are, jup.
- 1:51:31Speaker 5: I keep telling you something.
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: If I have flash level of control, I'm not coming
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: in there on some flash ship.
- 1:51:37Speaker 3: I'm just coming in there from from the Incredibles. You're
- 1:51:41Speaker 3: not the Sun from the Incredible.
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: I'm not coming in there on like the flash speed.
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: I'm just coming in there where I'm nice enough to
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: get a good contract.
- 1:51:50Speaker 6: Yeah, you wouldn't be able to hold back.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: Because I have too much respect for Jordan's So I'm
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: not winning six ships for yes, you.
- 1:52:02Speaker 3: Know you're gonna say, mellow you're gonna say something about
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: the power.
- 1:52:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I was just gonna say, like, uh, like I
- 1:52:09Speaker 6: would want to be DC speeds fast.
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: Okay, clicks over Uh no, no flash flashes super, he said.
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: But I don't want to say.
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: Like sometimes people they think in Marvel, but you're like specifically.
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: God level of speed.
- 1:52:24Speaker 6: Yeah, DC, like they cheat with how like they are
- 1:52:29Speaker 6: DC speedsteries are like Marvel psychics. So it's like if
- 1:52:33Speaker 6: you got like a speed stor on your side, you
- 1:52:34Speaker 6: already won. They already got like super strings because they
- 1:52:37Speaker 6: ran around the world to punch you. Like you can
- 1:52:38Speaker 6: read a book instantaneously and retain all the knowledge and
- 1:52:41Speaker 6: immediately learn the language. You could you have like a
- 1:52:45Speaker 6: teleportation level of speed or like it's just you are
- 1:52:49Speaker 6: run across water.
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Like yeah, if you fast enough, can't you go back
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: in time?
- 1:52:55Speaker 3: You can do a lot of stuff. You have multiple
- 1:52:58Speaker 3: powers with speed.
- 1:52:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know why so many other flashes are sad.
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: Seen everybody what happens they know that's on them.
- 1:53:09Speaker 5: I'm going to the ball. I'm going to ball out
- 1:53:11Speaker 5: in the league.
- 1:53:15Speaker 3: Well with that said, then I mean don't care about y'all.
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: He's going to ball out in the league.
- 1:53:24Speaker 3: Thank y'all both so much.
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: This has been an incredible conversation and interview and really
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: just really a masterclass also and and what it means
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: to be creatives and also work with someone so closely
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: and be able to be, you know.
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: Like have cohesion, if that makes sense, like you don't.
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: Unfortunately, a lot of creative a lot of teams nowadays,
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: you know, they seem to be cohesive and something happen.
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: I can name a whole bunch of them right now,
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: But y'all seem to have that balance together. And I
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: appreciate that, and I appreciate everything when it comes to
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: Jimmy Hendricks, Purple Hayes, everybody. This has been another dope
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: episode of four All Nerds. Make sure you are subscribed
