- 0:44Speaker 3: she's in heaven now now, Mark, I started with Martin
- 0:49Speaker 3: Black in the Make Belief Ballroom. I was eleven years old. Wow,
- 0:54Speaker 3: I'm ninety six. I went into William B. Williams becauseianimal
- 0:58Speaker 3: bag and now it's you now, let's see you maybe it.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Oh no, no, you'll be listening to play. You'll be
- 1:04Speaker 1: listening to people for years. You got many years to go, Malmorrow,
- 1:07Speaker 1: Happy birthday, Thanks for calling. Martin Block was the very
- 1:12Speaker 1: first disc jockey ever. It was nineteen thirty four. He
- 1:17Speaker 1: was on w ande W and they were covering the
- 1:21Speaker 1: Lindbergh trial and there were long delays, sometimes an hour
- 1:26Speaker 1: two hours, so they didn't know how to fill So
- 1:28Speaker 1: Martin Block, no one had ever done this before, he
- 1:31Speaker 1: started to play records on the radio. It was unheard of,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and he would play the records and then in between
- 1:39Speaker 1: talk about the music. It was the first disc jockey ever.
- 1:43Speaker 1: The record companies got furious because they thought, well, if
- 1:47Speaker 1: he's playing them on the radio for free, nobody will
- 1:49Speaker 1: buy them. So they went to court and sued Martin
- 1:52Speaker 1: Block to get him to stop playing these records on
- 1:54Speaker 1: the radio, and the suit dragged on. And as it
- 1:58Speaker 1: dragged on, they started to notice every time tell Me
- 2:00Speaker 1: played a certain record, it became a big best seller.
- 2:03Speaker 1: They realized it was actually helping them, and they dropped
- 2:06Speaker 1: a lawsuit, and then the long relationship between the record
- 2:10Speaker 1: companies and the radio stations began. Let's go to Rob
- 2:15Speaker 1: and Boston. Rob, how you doing? Wait a minute, Rob,
- 2:21Speaker 1: I'm up.
- 2:21Speaker 3: I listened to how we cough?
- 2:25Speaker 2: And how translate for why don't you take it like this?
- 2:32Speaker 1: We will talk at the same time speeeds things up.
- 2:34Speaker 1: What'd you say?
- 2:36Speaker 2: How we card takes Steve from Manhattan's call? Why don't
- 2:41Speaker 2: you have him on as a guest from Manhattan.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Because nobody wants to hear it, Nobody, nobody except you.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I don't even know who he is or what you're
- 2:47Speaker 1: talking about. Let's go to Ernie in Northport. Ernie, how you're.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Doing, good Mark, Good morning. I was wondering you think
- 2:55Speaker 2: the Clinton's are going to get the questions before they
- 2:58Speaker 2: answered these? No, you think they're going to get them beforehand?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Well they're not. You know, each person on the committee
- 3:08Speaker 1: gets their turn to ask questions. So if you're the
- 3:10Speaker 1: Democrat on the committee, yeah, they might leak it to
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Clintons. But the Republicans have no reason to leak
- 3:15Speaker 1: it to the Clintons. Also, the other reason they're testifying
- 3:18Speaker 1: the Democrats don't like the Clintons anymore. On the committee.
- 3:21Speaker 1: The problem is, and it was going before Congress. They
- 3:25Speaker 1: didn't show up last time and they were going to
- 3:27Speaker 1: have a vote on whether to prosecute And apparently a
- 3:31Speaker 1: lot of Democrats have no regard for the Clintons anymore.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Young Democrats don't know who the hell the Clintons are,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and a lot of even the older Democrats, they just
- 3:39Speaker 1: think the Clintons are dinosaurs from the past. They have
- 3:41Speaker 1: no use for them anymore. So that's why they agreed
- 3:45Speaker 1: to testify. They were going to lose the vote because
- 3:47Speaker 1: even Democrats would vote to go after them. Let's go
- 3:50Speaker 1: to Kenny and Bayside Kenny. How you doing, oh.
- 3:54Speaker 2: High Mark, how's it going? I mean it's now in
- 3:56Speaker 2: New York City.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I mean, what's going on?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Well, I mean, why don't they just jumping in the
- 4:01Speaker 2: river like they used to do? Come on, let's call.
- 4:03Speaker 1: You need some management. You got to have lots and
- 4:05Speaker 1: lots and lots and lots of trucks. You have to
- 4:08Speaker 1: scoop up all the snow, put it in a big,
- 4:10Speaker 1: huge dump truck, take the river and dumb they are
- 4:12Speaker 1: doing that. You can't see him doing that, but not
- 4:14Speaker 1: on a big enough scale. But to do it on
- 4:16Speaker 1: a big scale takes management skill. The mayor happens to
- 4:20Speaker 1: be a thirty two year old guy who never had
- 4:22Speaker 1: a job in his life. So uh, and in his defense,
- 4:26Speaker 1: he was busy for three days looking for the jackets,
- 4:28Speaker 1: so he didn't have time. Let's go to Neil in Brooklyn, Neil,
- 4:32Speaker 1: how you doing well?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Thank you? Listen. I'm not ninety six years old, but
- 4:37Speaker 2: I'm old enough to know that. Johnny Closson used that
- 4:40Speaker 2: well with may Or Lindsay about springtime coming.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it was an old Johnny Carson joke. When
- 4:46Speaker 1: Lindsay couldn't get the snow picked up. He said, He's
- 4:50Speaker 1: got a good plan to get rid of the snow.
- 4:51Speaker 1: It's called spring. Speaking of Johnny Carson, Uh, get that book.
- 4:55Speaker 1: There's a great new book out called Love Johnny Carson.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Mark Malcoff wrote it. Best book ever about Johnny Carson.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You can buy it right now. Let's go to Jim
- 5:06Speaker 1: in New Jersey. Jim, how you doing you?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Being a man of music? I see that Chuck Chuck
- 5:12Speaker 2: Negron died the other day. He was one of the
- 5:15Speaker 2: Three dog Nights.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And he was one of the founders of Three Dog Night.
- 5:19Speaker 1: They died at it was the eighty five or something
- 5:22Speaker 1: like that.
- 5:23Speaker 2: There's only one left now. But quick story. Mark Hoyt
- 5:26Speaker 2: Axton wrote their big song Joy to the World. The
- 5:29Speaker 2: band did not want to do this. The band did
- 5:31Speaker 2: not want to play this song. I thought it was ridiculous,
- 5:33Speaker 2: but Chuck Negron said, I'll sing it, but he's got
- 5:36Speaker 2: to change the first line. He didn't like the first line,
- 5:38Speaker 2: so they changed Jeremiah was a prophet to Jeremiah was
- 5:41Speaker 2: a bullfrog. And then Mark halfway through the song that
- 5:46Speaker 2: they thought the song was such a disaster that they
- 5:48Speaker 2: let the band sing the chorus. So halfway through the
- 5:51Speaker 2: song you see all these hear all these off key
- 5:53Speaker 2: singers singing to it. That was the band singing because
- 5:57Speaker 2: they thought it was going to be disaster, and it
- 5:59Speaker 2: turned out to the number one hit of nineteen seventy
- 6:01Speaker 2: one and so millions and millions.
- 6:02Speaker 1: That was a big hit back then. But let's be honest,
- 6:04Speaker 1: Chuck n around great great rock and roll, but this
- 6:06Speaker 1: guy was not Gershwin. I mean, if he thought Jeremiah
- 6:11Speaker 1: was a bullfrog, if he thought that's a better lyric.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Well that was That was White Acton. You also wrote,
- 6:15Speaker 2: I've never been to Spain, so everybody Harry Nelson one
- 6:18Speaker 2: for them, and uh, what's the other one? Mama told
- 6:22Speaker 2: me not to come. That was Mandy Newman. So everybody
- 6:24Speaker 2: wrote songs for them.
- 6:25Speaker 1: As you mentioned that a lot, I've never been to
- 6:27Speaker 1: Spain forgot that they did. The one Black and White
- 6:31Speaker 1: was a big.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Sim Yes, And like I said, one by One was
- 6:35Speaker 2: written by Harry Nielsen for them and that was a
- 6:37Speaker 2: big hit too. So thanks as always, Mark listening, all right.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Thanks for coming. Harry Nilson, not Nielsen. Nielsen's the rating company.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Nilsen was the singer. Yeah, all those groups, three tog Night,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know, still going strong, Chicago, still going strong, still
- 6:54Speaker 1: touring all over the world, doing very very well. I'm trying.
- 6:59Speaker 1: There are a bunch of this group, you know. The
- 7:00Speaker 1: old problem is, you know, they don't do much anymore.
- 7:03Speaker 1: But these two have those PBS oldies shows where they'd
- 7:06Speaker 1: get these groups and they'd all they'd get introduced and
- 7:09Speaker 1: they'd come out and they all had white hair, and
- 7:11Speaker 1: they were a thousand years old, the Bcnes and Grutch.
- 7:13Speaker 1: It just it was kind of I mean, the music
- 7:16Speaker 1: was great, but it was you really didn't want to
- 7:18Speaker 1: see them looking like that. Hey, when we come back, now,
- 7:21Speaker 1: this will be very interesting. If you're you've got any
- 7:26Speaker 1: kind of sports injuries or this is the most important
- 7:29Speaker 1: part about if you're trying to exercise, you want to
- 7:31Speaker 1: get to the gym, you want to make sure you
- 7:34Speaker 1: take long walks. You want to go running, you want
- 7:36Speaker 1: to do the but you can't get motivated. All right,
- 7:39Speaker 1: there's a way to do it. We'll get to that next.
- 7:42Speaker 1: If you just can't get the motivation right, we'll get
- 7:44Speaker 1: to that in the moment. On seven to ten, wor
