- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the SOB Scarlet Orange and Brown Podcast.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Weekly breakdown of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Cleveland Browns.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Here are your hosts, Ken Carpenter and Chris Husman.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Hello, and welcome to the SOB Podcast.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Scarlet, Orange, and Brown.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Ken Carpenter.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: And I'm Chris Husman.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: And we are in week two of the college football season, and we're going into the first week of the NFL season.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: And I gotta I gotta start off by week one thoughts as far as around college football.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: It was a weird week, Kenny.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, uh just watching Ohio State do what they should do against Ball State, that dismantling.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Um you know, I have several things I wanted to point out about this.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: You know, I think everybody was looking forward to the Texas game.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: And just, you know, seeing how they methodically went through things was really refreshing for me to see.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: And I'm so glad Buckeye Football is back.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Um, and then to finish with that Michigan fiasco, Kenny.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, you couldn't make this stuff up.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was just totally bizarre week in in in my opinion on a lot of this stuff.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Probably the best thing I've seen come from it was the uh the uh the golf meme where the guy's telling his wife that he shot the best golf outing and he missed the last butt, but they gave him a Michigan so he could get a mulligan.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: That's the new that's the new phrase, right?
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Get you a Michigan.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I just I I just no matter how they phrase it and try to say that it it it was clearly it was wrong, and Western Michigan got hosed about as bad as you could get hosed.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Well, it was in, I don't know if you saw it uh yesterday, they came out, the Western Michigan um athletic department just finally came out with a um uh an official uh statement on the game, you know, and uh they're petitioning, they're gonna try to petition uh the NCAA and the college football playoff to um you know revert that whole thing back to a Michigan or a Western Michigan uh victory.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Are they gonna be successful?
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: No.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: But, you know, it's just sad.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Uh uh, you know, I mean, that clock should be synced with the game clock.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Everything, they don't even have a uh a 0.8, 0.9, point, you know, uh uh clock in in college football.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: And everybody saw what we saw.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: That game should have been over.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: They should have got beat.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Hey, you know, I always root for the Big Ten, but my goodness, those poor kids from Western Michigan.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, that was just a travesty.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I think they the referee, I think at the nine second Mark said basically sync up the clock so we have nine seconds.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: And now all of a sudden it's different at the end.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: And well, I mean, it's and the other thing, you know, is I watched SMU play Florida State and the whole clock fiasco with or the whole power outage fiasco that they had.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: And, you know, it was like towards the end of the half, and it, you know, the play clearly had two seconds left, but the clock operator ran it off and they said, no, it's halftime.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm thinking, well, you know, what gives?
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: You know, and then they also had a, you know, they had one of their guys run out, said he stepped out on the 30-yard line, and he clearly didn't and went all the way down, you know, to like the five, but they called him back and they couldn't review it because they didn't have power.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: So it was just a bizarre week of NCAA football.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Well, it's um week two for the Buckeyes, and you know, just going over some of the things that happened with the Buckeys this past weekend, obviously 56-3 against Ball State, and you know, just a ton of different people, you know, stood out in the game.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: But I mean, Julian Sayon starting off you know, missing the first couple throws and then ends up finishing 21 for 25 at 320, three TDs, and 151 of those yards went to uh Jerus Jeremiah Smith.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: But to me, I believe it was six different players scoring a a touchdown.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: And you know, when I when I look at it, I the defense you know, they did what they they should do.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: But I I really got to believe that Matt Patricia really played a vanilla defense just because he didn't want to show anything to uh to Texas.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: But you know, the guy, the the two guys that jump out in my mind, uh Legend Bay and what he was able to do, even though he messed up early, then hopefully they're addressing the right tackle spot and uh getting that figured out on the offensive line.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: Everything you mentioned I've written down here, Kenny.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: They they actually played 88 players in that game.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: 88 of their players got in that game.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: Um to me, uh, I was really interested in the Arthur Smith factor.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: You know, I uh him him doing his play calling, him being uber aggressive, he was going downfield a lot.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Um then he started to get the running back open, and if he noticed, that opened up the running back game.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: You know, our running backs really weren't doing too much in the beginning of the game, and then all of a sudden, Kenny, they were um, you know, I think we had, I think Bo Jackson had a 65-yarder.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: Uh Jacoby Jackson had a 49-yarder.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: Uh Legend Bay had a little um, you know, pass in the flat where he looked electric and went like 51 yards um for a touchdown.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, I you know, I'm very, very impressed.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: I I think you're right.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Phillip Daniels at right tackle.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: Uh just seeing some of the replays.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, he went the wrong way on a play that was going to the right.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: First play of the game.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: And, you know, I mean, that needs to be addressed.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: I know it's the first play of the game.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: These guys don't have preseason, but you know, I mean, I mean, these guys have been practicing Kenny since March.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: So um another question of my mind, um, you know, we're we're doing our cowboy hash today in honor of the Texas game.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: Um, but um, you know, if you watch us on YouTube, you'll be able to see our fantastic lids.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, kind of the good, bad, and the ugly.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, the tight ends, I think two or three different tight ends made catches.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: I don't think they have that written down yet in solid, you know, in stone.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you're right, Devin McEwan looked good.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: He was legit.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: The U.S.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: UTSA transfer, six receptions, uh, 97 yards, um, a TD.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: What a great, great uh compliment to Jeremiah Smith.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Um, saying look comfortable to me.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, the to me, a surprise was QB2.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: You know, I was all interested in seeing Tavian St.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Clair trot out there.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: And here comes little 5'11 three-star quarterback from California, truth freshman, and Luke Fehey.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: And I thought he looked well, but I wonder what's going on there.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, Tavian came in at the end, he looked pretty good too.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: So I wonder, you know, Tavian's a five-star from Ohio.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, he could have went anywhere in the nation.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: So I'm wondering what's going on with that situation, to be honest with you.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Um, but Jeremiah Smith, again, you know, eight receptions, 151 yards, two TDs.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: To me, he's Heisman number one right now.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: I don't know your thoughts on that.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he he's definitely right there at the top.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh the the uh Miami wide receiver he and and their quarterback, they both look really good in their their opener.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: But uh Jeremiah definitely looked good and you know, he just he's just different.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, on the uh first touchdown pass he caught that I mean if you saw the instant replay on it, the he was wasn't even close to being open.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: And I think Julian Saiyan now knows that hey, just throw it.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: He's gonna get to the ball.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: And and that's if it's uh up for grabs, it's probably gonna be him coming down with it.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 100%.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: I uh I don't know your thought on the punt returners and the kickoff returners.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: You know, I still don't think they have that kind of worked out yet, too.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, but that's gonna play a huge, huge role in this game coming up with Texas.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: And you know, we had way too many penalties.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: You know, I know it was the first game, but we had nine penalties for 81 yards.
- 8:56SPEAKER_03: We've got to correct that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Um the defense in my mind was terrific.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, Matt Patricia, they gave up no touchdowns, three points.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Ball state only had 165 yards total, Kenny.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, that Corey uh Wilder is a force at defensive tackle.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: You know, I think he's like what that McDonald kid we had last year.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Um TJ Alfred had an interception.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, like you said, um uh 88 players played in that game.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: It was just, I think, a good all-around game for Iowa State.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Um the thing I'm really kind of concerned about, too, Kenny, is uh when we go down there, it's gonna be a 98 degree 105 humidity game at night at Texas.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: And, you know, to me, you know, that's gonna play a part, play a part in this game.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: Twenty up to twenty mile an hour winds, too, they they say.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: You know, I think that that's gonna be a huge factor.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, Mich or Michigan.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Uh Texas is obviously probably used to it.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: And this past summer, the they didn't have a whole lot of hot days here in Columbus to to really uh uh acclimate them to the uh situation.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: But I think you know, they're gonna get plenty of hydration this week and hopefully they're gonna be up for it.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And you know, the thing is that when I when I look at this game with Texas, I see Texas's defense going against our offensive line, and hopefully Ryan Day gets it figured out with the offensive line.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: And um but realistically, when you look at the game, I think there's more pressure on Texas to win than there is for Ohio State to win.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, it's one versus four.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, we won 14-7 uh in Columbus last year.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: I think we'd lead the series three to two on time.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: But it's gonna be a coordinator chess match for sure.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, Arthur Smith versus Will Muschant for Texas.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: Um, how about Arch Manning versus Matt Patricia?
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: That's gonna be a battle.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: You know, both of um both of the teams have electric wide receivers.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, they got Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think at the end of the day, it's just gonna be like, you know, a Texas Iowa State game the way it should be.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: These games are gonna be one in the trenches.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: And, you know, Simmons and Jackson are their uh defensive ends, and you know, they're pretty formidable uh if we can get our line situated the way we need to be.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, Texas is a one and a half point favorite.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: Uh the over and under on this game is 48.5.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it it's one of those things that, you know, Arch Manning's a fourth year senior playing for Steve Sarkezia.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it uh I I still like Ohio State's chances.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I'm picking Ohio State to win this game.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: Um 24-20.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think it's gonna be one in the trenches.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be a uh I I like our kicker.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, the kid looks good.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: I think that's gonna be another X factor in this game.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I'm uh I'm leaning toward the Buckeyes 30-27, and I think it's just gonna be a fun game.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: You know, I he called the Matthew McConaughey Bowl because you know that they're gonna show him about a thousand times on the sideline.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: But uh it's gonna be a fun, fun week and definitely a a great challenge for the Buckeyes.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Now switching gears here, it's the opening week of the NFL season, and the Cincinnati Bengals they get to open up at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Baker Mayfield finally gets the new contract, but he doesn't have his biggest weapon in Mike Evans.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: And I I came across this today.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: This is his 11th offensive coordinator in his nine-year career for Baker.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: And uh, but on the Bengal side of the things, all key pieces are healthy, and they just got to go out and get off to a good start as far as in the win column early this year if they want to make a great run at the end of the season.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you mentioned Baker.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know,$165 million contract.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's got to make him feel good, make him feel wanted.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I just don't think he's had that, you know, in his career until lately at Tampa Bay.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Um and your uh another point you made too was the new offensive coordinator that Tampa Bay has and Zach Robinson.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Um that'll be that'll be different to prepare for for Al Golden.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: Um I I just look at it like this, Kenny.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: Uh with with the new defense and the new chemistry around the Bengals right now.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Boye Maffey, you know, uh uh Super Bowl winner from Seattle.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: Uh Cassius Howe, um, just an electric.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: I hear he's just electric at defensive end.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: Dexter Lawrence, sexy Dexie uh in the middle.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: Uh Jonathan Allen, uh, their other defensive tackle.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: That's gonna give guys like BJ Hill and some of their other defensive linemen, you know, spell them on breaks.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: Um Brian Cook, you know, the safety for the Chiefs for the past year, you know, on teen years.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: Those guys are just gonna bring a new attitude, you know, to the to the Bengals.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Um not only are those front four guys right there I mentioned uh going to keep offensive linemen off of our linebackers to free them up, because that's one of my key matchups here.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna tell you in a minute.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, Tampa Bay has two very good shutdown uh white um cornerbacks and Jacob Parrish and uh Zion McCollum.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Um they're they'll give T and Chase you know a good a good matchup.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: Um so to me, this game's gonna come down to Chase Brown, the running back.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: Um the way he's been catching the ball in the backfield, um, you know, the way he's been running the ball, you know, I think I think that's gonna be a big, big key uh in Sunday's game.
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: You know, they need to avoid a slow start, you know, they need to stop the run.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: Um, they need to keep Baker in the pocket.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: I think um if he throws interceptions, I read you know last year they were one and seven.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Uh if he threw an interception, and then when he didn't, they were seven and one.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: So kind of speaks for itself.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: We also need to keep a buckeye, uh, one of my favorite buckeyes, uh Mekka Buka in check and not let him go off and have a great game.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: So you're right.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: Mike Evans is gone, Rasheed White's gone to the commanders.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, Mike Evans went to the 49ers.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Uh key matchups, you know, their running back Bucky Irvin against uh Demetrius Knight, our linebacker, um our tackle, Marius Mims versus uh, you know, Miami Hurricane rookie Ruben Bain Jr.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: Uh that's gonna be an interesting watch.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: Um Graham Barton, their center.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: How's he gonna handle Dexter Lawrence?
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: So, you know, the other thing offensively for the Bengals is you know, Tampa Bay blitzes about 35% of the time.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: And Joe Burrow usually eats up a blitz.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll see how that comes about and how they handle that.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, and another X factor is their linebackers, Kenny, might even be worse than the Bengals.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: So that's why I'm I'm I'm banking on Chase Brown having a huge, huge game.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: My my prediction, Bengals 31, Tampa Bay 24.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Yes, I think it's going to be uh a high-scoring game.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: And then and if you get in a shootout and you got Joe Burr and Jamar Chase, T.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: Higgins, I'm gonna lean toward uh the Bengals uh taking care of this one, and I can see it being uh 34, 34-24, and uh Bengals getting off to a good start, and the Queen City will definitely uh be in a butt much better mood this season than they have been in the past.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and they need it.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, Zach Taylor needs it, uh the whole fan base needs it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, the front office needs it.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: You know, Mike Brown, Katie Blackburn, you know, they they all need that too as well, you know, as well as our scouting staff.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: We've added a lot of scouting um uh scouting managers too.
- 17:53SPEAKER_03: So um I like our practice squad, you know, I like our backups.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: We just got to go out and get it done on the field.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: And you talk about a fan base, the uh Cleveland Browns, they are on the road to open the season down at Jacksonville, who was uh they're the defending AFC South champs.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Uh to me, the the two key players that stand out to me are obviously the quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Travis Hunter comes back after only playing in seven games last year, so he'll probably see time on both sides of the ball.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: And the thing that I gotta you gotta wonder, I mean, the Browns defense has been good for the past couple years, but how's it gonna look without Miles Garrett and with Jared Verson taking his place?
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Offensive side, the fans are going to be uh excited to see Casey Concepcion, Denzel Boston, Jerry Judy talk about a huge upgrade at the wide receiver area, and then Quinshawn Junkins is back from his injury.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: And the one thing that jumps out I came across this today was the Browns got rid of their entire starting offensive line, either to retirement uh trades or just let them go.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: And none of those offensive linemen found a starting position this past this going into this season.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: So maybe the Browns are right to to move on from those guys, but uh the line that steps in for them, that's that's gonna be a huge task trying to keep uh Watson comfortable back there in the pocket.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, totally, totally agree with you.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Todd Munkinera begins, right?
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Um can Watson get off to a fast start?
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, just looking at my notes here, I was writing down, and I have a huge question mark by it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: I mean the Jags defense, Kenny, might be as legitimate as the Browns defense.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: Um especially against passes defended and takeaways.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: Um the Jags do have a major question in the running game, though.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Uh NTN left.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: Um they had five unproven guys.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: So it's gonna be, you know, uh just a potpourri of people in the backfield for them.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: But you're right, Jared Vers um versus you know uh Van Lannon.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: If he starts, he's injured.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Uh and then if that's the case, he's gonna go against backup Harrison.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: So he could have a field day, can he?
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: Um Heinz Allen versus Spencer Faino, that's gonna be another, you know, like you said, they have five new offensive linemen for the Browns.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: Um Mason Graham on defense, you know, your second-year guy going against Pregnon.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: Um, can he get to Trevor Lawrence?
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Because if you give Trevor Lawrence all signs of time back there, not only will he run, but he's very accurate as a quarterback.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: Um, some of my other ones on here that I've written down was you you nailed it again, Casey Concepcion versus Travis Hunter.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: That's gonna be a oh, what a match that's gonna be.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and then Harold Fannon versus the Jags linebackers.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: I'll take Harold Fannon all day on that.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: Um and then my last one I have written down here is Deshaun versus himself.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: 23 turnovers for the Cleveland Browns since he's been signed.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: 22 touchdowns.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: So he's got more turnovers than he does uh touchdowns since joining the Cleveland Browns.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: Um excuse me, Quinson Juncks Judkins should have a big day, Kenny.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: So if I'm a betting guy, you know, it's the Jags minus eight and a half, the over under is forty.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: I do have the Jags winning this game 28-17, but I think if you're a betting guy, um Harold Fannon and Quinshawn Jutkins should have big days uh for the Browns.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I uh being a Browns fan my whole entire life, I I try to be as optimistic going into the season.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: But there's a part of me that has to be a realist, and I think uh the Browns they're gonna have a different look.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: I just I just don't know if they're gonna be good enough to to get a win this first week against Jacksonville.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: And I say Jacksonville probably 24 to 14 over the Browns.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Now here's the thing I wanted to add this week.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I think we we do a pretty solid job of making picks on the spread and and picking teams that we think are going to win.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: So for the listeners that listen to us on the the the podcast, whether it's on Spotify or Apple Podcast, whatever it may be, and for the the YouTube list, what people that watch us on YouTube, um I picked out four games NFL and four games in college football.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: And I want to get your thoughts and you know, maybe uh somebody listening, they might be interested in our takes and and might be able to help them make a little bit of money this weekend, whether it's through DraftKings or one of those uh sites that that likes to do that.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: And let's start off with college football.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Oklahoma minus five and a half against Michigan at Michigan.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: Take Oklahoma all day long.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Yes, you know, I know Michigan, I know Michigan's got a lot to prove.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: And reluctantly, you know, uh the head coach said, we are sticking with Bryce Underwood.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Now, if you're a quarterback and you hear we're sticking with him, you know, instead of no, he's our quarterback going forward.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: We have all the faith in the world.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: The way he phrased it, you know, Bryce Underwood's got a definite chip on his shoulder.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: So I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a big game.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: But you're taking Oklahoma.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: But I still I I mean, and Oklahoma's just, I mean, they're in another realm right now other than Michigan.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I tend to agree.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: I think Oklahoma could be able to win this one double digits.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: Next game is a very interesting one.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Boise State minus eight and a half against Memphis.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Who you like there?
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: Well, where's that game being played?
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: That's on the blue turf?
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I believe it is.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I'm not 100% though.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: Memphis is not bad.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: Memphis is 2-0, I think.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: I believe.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: Um and uh very good, very good team.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it's kind of a running, running gun, run and shoot type offense, too, as well.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: A lot of speed on the Memphis team.
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, kind of, I know what you're saying there.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: Um, I would stay away from that game, honestly.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: I know on the looks of it, it, you know, yeah, you're gonna take Boise State all day long.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: Um, but don't be surprised.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, Memphis is a very good football team.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Boise looked real good against Oregon.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: They they they put a scare into Oregon.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take Boise in that game.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Um, but like you said, I I think it might be closer than the eight and a half.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: The next game is Alabama Crimson Tide versus Kentucky, and Alabama's given 10 and a half.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I'm kind of torn on this one because uh Lincoln Kleinhold, um, you know, he was a quarterback at Iowa State, he was a backup, now he's down there.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: He started.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: He's actually at Louisville.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, he went to Louisville.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: You're right, Kenny.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Um man, that changes things for me then.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: Um I I still like Alabama uh in that.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Just saying that, I mean, I really like Alabama.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: I don't know where the game is off the top of my head.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, I would like Alabama home more away on that game.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: I'd take Alabama in that game, but Kentucky usually could plays them tough.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: And of course, the last one that in the college football game that's that jumps out is obviously uh Texas point and a half favorite versus the Buckeyes at Texas.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I like I like Ohio State in this one.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: I think we have too many weapons.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I I just think it's gonna be one of those games we've we faced them, you know, uh a lot lately.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, I just think we have a good game plan.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: We got great coordinators, we got great skill positions, we got great linemen.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: You know, I just think it's it's still a high states game to lose.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, if we if we don't turn the ball over um teen times, I mean I think we're we're gonna be the better team at the end of the day.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, I agree with you.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: I think a high state wins, but it's definitely gonna be a very, very close game.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Moving on to the NFL, the game down in Australia.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: They had two different approaches to when to arrive in Australia, but the Rams are minus three and a half versus the 49ers.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Tough game.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: Um, I picked the Rams uh to win it all.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I just think they're a very solid team, very professional team.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, with Miles Garrett in there, that addition uh too as well.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Um I just think they're gonna be too much for uh San Francisco at this point in time.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: And I'm still not sold on San Francisco's quarterback.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: Um name escapes me right now, but um Purdy's Brock Purdy.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: Um solid.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: Be lucky to have him.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: Um, but I just think you know he does have a new weapon in Mike Evans.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, Christian McCaffrey's been getting dinged up a lot.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: Um I don't know.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: I just like the Rams in this one.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take the Rams also, but uh it's the NFL.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Anything's possible, but I think the Rams are there's a reason they're ranked uh the number one team in the NFL this going into the season.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Next one, Kansas City.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Two and a half uh minus two and a half versus Denver.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: Um that was my upset.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: I got five upsets I got here I want to mention, but um Denver was one of my picks over Kansas City.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: I just think again, Denver is another pro-class team that um has been you know on a roll lately.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: And I think they're gonna continue to roll.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Um I still don't know, you know, if um um Kansas City has enough weapons to go, you know, to go into Arrowhead.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: I think it's at Arrowhead and and take down the Denver Broncos with that defense.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: That defense is stifling.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: So I do like Denver.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm gonna go with Denver also because I I just don't know if Mahomes is 100% because of his injury, and Bo Nicks.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: I can only see him getting better.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: And Denver made a nice run last year, so I I'm gonna go with Denver in that one.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: And the the next one, the Bengals are minus three and a half versus Tampa Bay.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Um, I do like the Bengals in this game.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: I don't know if they'll cover three and a half.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: The Bengals seem to be on those teams that lets teams hang around.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: Um but I'm thinking, and I'm what I'm hoping with that new revamped defense that you know we just step on somebody's neck and keep them down.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Um I would probably stay away from that game.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: Um three and a half points, you know, it's just that half point that's uh you know, two and a half, I would take them.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: But three and a half, yeah, and the Bengals like to keep teams around.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure about it.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go against you there.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: I think the Bengals, they're they're just gonna be lights out on offense this year, and I think they cover the the three and a half versus Tampa Bay.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And the final one obviously is uh Jacksonville minus eight and a half versus the Cleveland Browns at uh Jacksonville.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: Um I think this is just um you know, you go down to Duval County, and you know, they get that chant going.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: And, you know, if uh if if Lawrence gets hot, it's gonna be a long day for Cleveland.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: But you know, if Cleveland's defense can keep him in the game, I would go with the under on this game.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: You know, the over-under is 40.5.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: I would go with the under on this game.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: Um and stay away from that eight and a half points.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: That's a that's a trick.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: So I would definitely go with the under on this one.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I I think Jacksonville has a good chance to cover, and I'm gonna go with Jacksonville over Cleveland this week, even though I'm kind of hoping it's the other way around.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: Now you make it two great, two two great defenses, Kenny.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: I just don't I don't see both teams putting up over 20 points, you know, uh in this game.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: Um even though I did say the Jags will win 28-17, um, you know, probably mistake there.
- 31:30SPEAKER_03: Um more like 21-14, you know, 21-13.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Um here's one for you.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: How about Houston over Buffalo?
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: Well, CJ Stroud turned down a big contract, so maybe he's got something to prove.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: That's a that's a possibility, but I I I don't know.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: I I just have Buffalo going to the Super Bowl, so I think Buffalo probably takes that one.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, three of my college locks, I think I have on this, is Florida Atlantic over Navy.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: Um I think um Navy's just fine, you know, they got that quarterback from Ohio that uh is gone, and they're trying to find their new quarterback in that system.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: Um I think Florida Atlantic played a good decent game last week, so I like them.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: And then I'm sticking with uh the uh armed services here in South Florida teams, University of South Florida over Army as well.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: I think South Florida's got a lot of talent down there.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: Uh and then I'm picking Duke over Illinois this week, Kenny.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, even though we did go, we did go last week.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: Um we went four and two last week.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: Um, and you can say five and two with your uh you know the spread pickup that you had with Boise over Oregon.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, that wasn't a bad week for us uh at all.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: Well, I I my luck obviously this week is I to me, I just think it's gotta be Oklahoma over Michigan.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: And I would be willing to bet that the whole country is uh going to tune in and be rooting against Michigan based on how the Western Michigan game went.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, I I just think it's gonna be a fun week of football, and we haven't even really got into all of the the league play that uh is gonna start up here shortly, but uh definitely a fun, fun uh start to the opening season of college football and gonna be interested to see how the NFL starts off.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I totally agree.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, uh we checked our numbers too, Kenny, on the podcast last week, and we got you know uh a great turnout.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: Very pleased with it too, as well.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: We just want to encourage people to keep watching um and keep listening to uh you know the podcast.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Um I get a small shout out to Riley Kelly and Jillian Kelly and Savannah Traeger, my nieces.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: They don't miss an episode and they're always watching and they're always rooting us on, Kenny.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: So I want to give a shout out to them, clear up in East Knox, Ohio.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: And I want to say a special shout out to you, Kenny.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Tomorrow you have a big birthday coming up, 63 years old, and you don't look a day over 62, Kenny.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Not at all.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: I quit counting a long, long time ago, trust me.
- 34:25SPEAKER_03: Well, happy birthday anyway, Kenny.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: You deserve everything you got.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: You're one of the good ones, Kenny.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Well, it's the SOB podcast, and if you like what you're you're listening to here, please be sure to share it with a friend and um tune in to us every week where we're gonna break down the the buckeyes, the bangles, and the browns.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: And let's go buckeyes, let's go buckeyes, and let's lasso up some tech.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: Let's just go after McConaughey right off the bat.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: There we go.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Take him out on the sideline.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: We'll do a all right, all right, all right.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Well, hey, let's wrap it up right here.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: It's YesO B, week two.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: I'm Chris Useman.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: Thanks for listening.
