- 0:09Your travels have brought you to the Surfing
- 0:11Your Edge podcast, where we explore what it
- 0:14takes to create the bigger, bolder, badass life
- 0:17you know you were born for.
- 0:19Not a life that simply looks good on
- 0:21paper, and not another spin on the self
- 0:24-help hamster wheel.
- 0:25If you're ready for more joy, more peace,
- 0:28and more contribution, you're in the right place.
- 0:32I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
- 0:35Let's get surfing!
- 0:38Agency isn't pretending you have unlimited choices.
- 0:42It's recognizing that you probably have more options
- 0:45than you can see right now, and getting
- 0:48curious about what they might be.
- 0:51I'm Kristine, and I am the Surfing Your
- 0:53Edge coach, and I am all about agency.
- 0:57The reason I'm here is to help people
- 1:00live the bigger, bolder, badass lives they know
- 1:03they were born for, and in order to
- 1:06do that, we have to learn to step
- 1:08into our agency, which probably also means we
- 1:11have to learn to find opportunities that may
- 1:15not come to the surface immediately, right?
- 1:19And then, here's the sneaky part, I don't
- 1:22know if I've said this already in the
- 1:24podcast or not, it might be a big
- 1:27reveal, the sneaky part of agency for me
- 1:31is that once you start living that bigger,
- 1:34bolder, badass life you know you were born
- 1:35for, I'm hoping you will also use your
- 1:38agency to leave a legacy and to start
- 1:42stepping into the world in a bigger way
- 1:45and really thinking about how you can make
- 1:50the world a better place.
- 1:52You may not have any clue how you're
- 1:54going to do it now, and that's totally
- 1:56fine, but I think it's completely possible.
- 2:00So this episode is for you if you
- 2:03are looking at the current economic and political
- 2:08climate and thinking, now is not a great
- 2:11time to stick your head up and start
- 2:13going for that big dream.
- 2:16If you're thinking that now is a better
- 2:19time to wait it out and see what
- 2:21happens, I hear you, but this episode is
- 2:25going to hopefully shake you loose from that
- 2:27a little bit.
- 2:28It's also for you if you're thinking about
- 2:30changing careers, if you're a new empty nester
- 2:34and trying to figure out what life looks
- 2:36like from this vantage point, if you're considering
- 2:39retirement or if retirement is looming and you
- 2:43know you're not ready for the rocking chair
- 2:46and the remote and you know there's more
- 2:48for you to experience and enjoy and contribute
- 2:53to the world, then this is a conversation
- 2:55I want to have with you.
- 2:57So let's get started.
- 2:59We're going to talk today about how to
- 3:02find your agency, step into your agency, use
- 3:08your agency, and I can't wait.
- 3:11Okay, so if you're feeling constrained and you
- 3:15don't know what options are available to you
- 3:18or you're feeling there are no options available
- 3:20to you, right?
- 3:21I would love it if you would start
- 3:24by noticing where you're treating things as if
- 3:29they're inevitable.
- 3:31Where are you hearing yourself say, this is
- 3:34just how my job is, this is just
- 3:36how life is.
- 3:37I'm too old to start over, my partner
- 3:41would never go for that, I can't afford
- 3:44it, I don't have enough time, the world
- 3:46is such a mess, what difference could I
- 3:49possibly make, right?
- 3:50If you're hearing yourself say any of those
- 3:53things, chances are you're giving away your agency.
- 3:58Some of those constraints are absolutely real, but
- 4:01the constraint and the conclusion we draw from
- 4:04it are not always the same thing.
- 4:07This could be your opportunity to really begin
- 4:14to understand that agency is not having unlimited
- 4:21choices.
- 4:22It's about getting curious about the choices you
- 4:24actually do have, right?
- 4:26That is the very first thing we said
- 4:28at the top of this podcast and I
- 4:30want to say it again.
- 4:32Curiosity is the skill that helps you unlock
- 4:36your agency.
- 4:39So a useful question to ask yourself now
- 4:42might be, what have I decided is fixed
- 4:45that might actually not be fixed, right?
- 4:49What could change and what is not really
- 4:56as it seems?
- 4:58The second thing I'd like you to consider
- 5:00is that agency is not control, it's choosing
- 5:04your move.
- 5:06A lot of times we think because we
- 5:08don't get to decide all of the factors
- 5:10of a situation that that means we have
- 5:13no ability to move and usually that is
- 5:17not the case, right?
- 5:18Agency lives in the space of given what
- 5:23is true right now, what do I want
- 5:26to do next?
- 5:27And the point I should make here is
- 5:31that you don't have to know all of
- 5:34the steps.
- 5:35You just have to see one little opening,
- 5:38right?
- 5:39There probably are several, but if you notice
- 5:42one and you act on that one opening,
- 5:46once you get through that door, chances are
- 5:51another opportunity will open to you as well.
- 5:55So you don't have to see the whole
- 5:57path from here to there in order to
- 5:59take that first move.
- 6:01You can just step into it now and
- 6:04trust that the next step will appear.
- 6:07So the true skill here is to learn
- 6:13to read what's happening, to make choices, to
- 6:17adjust based on what happens when you make
- 6:20that first move and respond, right?
- 6:23To respond to what comes up.
- 6:25So it may feel like you're in a
- 6:27box, but I would imagine there's probably a
- 6:31way out and maybe you haven't seen it
- 6:34yet.
- 6:34The third thing I'd like you to consider
- 6:36is that agency grows when you use it.
- 6:43We don't usually reclaim agency by making one
- 6:46enormous life-changing decision.
- 6:48We reclaim it through small acts that remind
- 6:51us we can affect what happens next, right?
- 6:55You can send the email, you can ask
- 6:58the question, you can say no, you can
- 7:01apply for the job or the opportunity, you
- 7:05can try the class, you can make an
- 7:08appointment, you can write the first page or
- 7:11the first paragraph, right?
- 7:13You can tell someone what you want.
- 7:16You can take one meaningful step towards something
- 7:19you care about.
- 7:21So again, we come back to the fact
- 7:23that it takes just one step.
- 7:26And when you get used to taking that
- 7:28one step and looking around and seeing what
- 7:31else is available, it's easier to take the
- 7:34next step.
- 7:35Every time you take an action that says,
- 7:38I have some say in what happens next,
- 7:40you strengthen your sense of agency.
- 7:43And this is where the sneaky part comes
- 7:45in, because agency isn't only about creating the
- 7:49life you want, it's also about how you
- 7:52participate in creating the world you want to
- 7:55live in.
- 7:56We don't have to solve everything.
- 7:58We can choose something we care about and
- 8:00make our move.
- 8:03So you may have heard me say this
- 8:05already, but I really believe that we are
- 8:09on this planet to become the fullest expression
- 8:13of ourselves, right?
- 8:15And that means learning to find your agency,
- 8:19learning to see opportunities, learning to have the
- 8:22courage to step into them and getting closer
- 8:27and closer to living that life you know
- 8:29you were born for.
- 8:31And as you get better at making the
- 8:34right choices in your life, you're going to
- 8:36impact the people around you.
- 8:38They're going to benefit from the choices you're
- 8:41making.
- 8:41They're also going to be inspired by the
- 8:43choices you're making.
- 8:45And you'll also feel inspired, I hope, to
- 8:48start making choices that make the world a
- 8:52better place, that leave the legacy you might
- 8:56really want to leave.
- 8:57And you may, again, have no clue what
- 9:00that looks like, what that might feel like,
- 9:03but it's out there for you.
- 9:06And if you're curious and you're courageous and
- 9:11you're willing to take one step at a
- 9:13time, you really can lean into leaving the
- 9:18legacy that you are meant to leave.
- 9:22I know it can be a challenge to
- 9:24know where to look to find opportunities and
- 9:29find the courage to step into your own
- 9:31agency, especially if you've had voices in your
- 9:34head or in the world or both telling
- 9:38you for a very long time that this
- 9:41is the box you belong in, this is
- 9:42the lane you belong in, don't rock the
- 9:45boat, right?
- 9:46The rest of us all agree that this
- 9:48is how the world works.
- 9:49You need to get on board.
- 9:50If those are the kinds of voices you're
- 9:52hearing, it can be a real challenge to
- 9:55find your own agency on your own.
- 9:59And sometimes you need someone else to step
- 10:02in, right?
- 10:03There's the saying you can't read the label
- 10:05on your own bottle.
- 10:06So in that case, you might need a
- 10:08friend or a coach or me.
- 10:15I host regular possibility parties, and I will
- 10:19leave information about how to get in touch
- 10:22with me about that in the show notes.
- 10:26So what we've talked about so far today
- 10:27is that step number one is notice where
- 10:31you have surrendered your choice, right?
- 10:34Where might there be opportunities that you're not
- 10:38looking for because you assume something is true?
- 10:42Two, distinguish control from agency.
- 10:46You can't always control all of the situation,
- 10:50but you can make choices about where and
- 10:53how you move.
- 10:55And third, practice agency through small, regular, meaningful
- 11:01action.
- 11:02The more agency you step into, the more
- 11:06agency becomes available for you.
- 11:08And the better your life gets, the better
- 11:10the life of everyone around you gets, and
- 11:13the more you're able to contribute to making
- 11:16the world the kind of world you want
- 11:18to live in.
- 11:21So final questions for you.
- 11:25What have I been treating as inevitable?
- 11:31Where might there be an option I haven't
- 11:34seen yet?
- 11:36And what could happen if I got curious
- 11:39enough to look for it?
- 11:41What I really want you to remember about
- 11:43today's conversation is that you probably have more
- 11:49agency, more possibility than you're aware of.
- 11:53And I hope you take a few moments
- 11:57today, tomorrow, next week, to keep considering where
- 12:02those options are and where they might take
- 12:06you.
