Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Cardinals second-half sprint begins
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome back to Cardinal territory. I'm her host, Katie Wu,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and happy second half of the season. Now, technically we
- 0:11Speaker 1: have well surpassed the actual halfway mark of the season.
- 0:14Speaker 1: The Cardinals have exactly sixty five games remaining on the
- 0:17Speaker 1: regular season dockets, starting tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks at
- 0:21Speaker 1: Chase Field. I am not in Arizona. I will meet
- 0:24Speaker 1: the team in Denver on Monday. But still plenty to
- 0:27Speaker 1: discuss here, starting with I'm not trying to be dramatic
- 0:30Speaker 1: when I say the next ten games could dictate the
- 0:33Speaker 1: rest of the season. And that sounds kind of silly, right, Like,
- 0:36Speaker 1: it's one hundred and sixty two game season. How can
- 0:38Speaker 1: one sixteenth of it matter this much? Well? It does.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Here's how the card schedule looks heading into this year's deadline,
- 0:44Speaker 1: which is scheduled for July thirty first, five pm Central Time.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Three games in Arizona, three games in Colorado, no off day,
- 0:52Speaker 1: straight to a four game set at home versus the Padres,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and then three games against the Miami Marlins. They have
- 0:57Speaker 1: an off day schedule for the thirty first in Sand
- 1:00Speaker 1: so at least there will be no game on deadline
- 1:02Speaker 1: day that is always like stupid stressful. But it's no
- 1:05Speaker 1: secret that the Cardinal's second half sprint starts right now.
- 1:09Speaker 1: President Baseball Operations John Mozelac has said this throughout the
- 1:11Speaker 1: season and most recently reiterated this in the first week
- 1:15Speaker 1: of July. He is prepared to go to the week
- 1:18Speaker 1: before the trade deadline, if not the final seventy two
- 1:21Speaker 1: hours before the trade deadline, before making a decision if
- 1:24Speaker 1: the Cardinals should buy or sell. And guess what, he's
- 1:26Speaker 1: not alone. Multiple teams, including the Diamondbacks, find themselves in
- 1:31Speaker 1: the same position as the Cardinals. We call them bubble
- 1:33Speaker 1: teams here in the industry because they are right on
- 1:36Speaker 1: the bubble between buying and selling. And we're going to
- 1:38Speaker 1: have to check in on these teams, just going off
- 1:40Speaker 1: the top of my head, the Rangers, the Royals, the Guardians,
- 1:43Speaker 1: the Twins, the Cardinals, just to see because how they
- 1:47Speaker 1: play it over the next week or so again will
- 1:50Speaker 1: influence their plans. So what the Cardinals are deciding right now,
- 1:53Speaker 1: which is that they will not sell and they want
- 1:55Speaker 1: to compete in the second half, that could be entirely
- 1:57Speaker 1: different comes seven days from now. If this upcoming road
- 1:59Speaker 1: trip does not go well. Same for the Diamondbacks. You
- 2:01Speaker 1: have a lot of pieces. You're thinking about Suarez, you're
- 2:04Speaker 1: thinking about Zach Gallon, and then the whole ale Central
- 2:07Speaker 1: Outside of the Tigers and the White Sox, those three teams,
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Royals, the Twins, and the Guardians are kind of
- 2:12Speaker 1: all bubbled together. See that's what we call them bubble teams.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So we don't know a lot about the market. We
- 2:17Speaker 1: do know it's starting to heat up. The Royals traded
- 2:19Speaker 1: for Adam Fraser over the All Star break, and I
- 2:21Speaker 1: saw John Hayman of the New York Post reporting that
- 2:23Speaker 1: Spencer Turnbull is on his way to the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:25Speaker 1: So the market is starting to heat up. But we
- 2:28Speaker 1: likely won't have a full idea of what that market
- 2:30Speaker 1: looks like in total until maybe a couple days before
- 2:34Speaker 1: the deadline, and then things will get very, very weird.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So that's fun if you're a fan, not so fun
- 2:38Speaker 1: if you're a reporter. But hey, that's what we sign
- 2:41Speaker 1: up to do. My prediction for this Cardinals team, I
- 2:44Speaker 1: don't know if you're going to really love this news,
- 2:46Speaker 1: but I can see them doing exactly what they did
- 2:49Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four buying and selling at the same time.
- 2:52Speaker 1: We know that they have intents of moving Eric Fetti.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I don't see them doing anything major here, one because
- 2:57Speaker 1: that's not normally what they do. And two, it would
- 3:00Speaker 1: really surprise me if the Cardinals make a major shakeup
- 3:02Speaker 1: with their roster, knowing that a new front office is
- 3:04Speaker 1: coming in in November. Again, that could change, but right
- 3:07Speaker 1: now I think it's business as usual for John Mozelac
- 3:09Speaker 1: and the Cardinals. We'll see, though, I'm sure that this
- 3:11Speaker 1: will be an entirely different situation over the next week
- 3:14Speaker 1: or so. We'll get into all of the things to
- 3:16Speaker 1: kick off the second half. First though, Oh, here we go.
- 3:20Speaker 1: First though, we need to tell you about a giveway
- 3:22Speaker 1: we're doing here at foul Territory. We have a great
- 3:28Speaker 1: giveaway going on right now in our chat BCC group chat.

- 3:44Speaker 1: crush it, and you might win. We're picking one winner
- 3:46Speaker 1: from the top ten scores at random deadline is July
- 3:49Speaker 1: twentieth at eleven to fifty nine pm Eastern Time. Again,
- 3:52Speaker 1: that's at chat BCC. Check it out, all right, some
- 4:02Speaker 1: transactional news. Jordan Walker is up, Thomas a JC is down.
- 4:07Speaker 1: The Cardinals options to JC on Thursday back to Memphis,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and they will officially recall Jordan Walker or excuse me,
- 4:13Speaker 1: activate him off the injured list ahead of Friday's game.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So MLB players have twenty days on a rehab assignment
- 4:20Speaker 1: before the team must decide whether to add them back
- 4:23Speaker 1: to the active roster or option them. Jordan Walker was
- 4:26Speaker 1: approaching that twenty day mark at some point during the series.
- 4:28Speaker 1: To be honest, it might even have been today, So
- 4:31Speaker 1: the Cardinals seems to make a decision on him. Thomas
- 4:33Speaker 1: A JC. I know you guys love him, and I
- 4:35Speaker 1: think he has a lot of raw tools. Just didn't
- 4:37Speaker 1: seem to be particularly ready for this stint. Let's look
- 4:41Speaker 1: at his stat line. It was not great one second.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Who was hitting below two hundred and just kind of
- 4:49Speaker 1: fell overmatched at the point official stat line one thirty
- 4:52Speaker 1: three fifty six over fourteen games. That will not do it.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So I'm sure we'll see s JC again at some point,
- 4:58Speaker 1: but still some things to work on in memph And
- 5:01Speaker 1: the same can be said for Jordan Walker. Let's talk
- 5:04Speaker 1: a little bit about Walker, who, as you all know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: I was very high on the beginning of the season,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and I'm not suggesting that I'm not anymore, but I
- 5:11Speaker 1: think we can all say that first half of the
- 5:12Speaker 1: season was a disappointment. Various multiple stints on the injured
- 5:17Speaker 1: list limited Walker in had just fifty five games. We'll
- 5:19Speaker 1: go to Baseball Reference and read his stat line. He
- 5:21Speaker 1: took one hundred and seventy six of bats, he hit
- 5:24Speaker 1: two ten, a on base percentage of two sixty seven,
- 5:27Speaker 1: a slugging percentage of two ninety five for an ops
- 5:29Speaker 1: of five sixty two home or just three times. That
- 5:32Speaker 1: is just that's not going to cut it. And I
- 5:35Speaker 1: think both the Cardinals and Jordan Walker would say that
- 5:37Speaker 1: they're disappointed about how that first half went. Because Walker
- 5:39Speaker 1: was identified as top priority number one to get right
- 5:44Speaker 1: for this season. This was a huge year for him
- 5:46Speaker 1: as the Cardinals try to decide what his future in
- 5:48Speaker 1: Saint Louis. Looks like they were hoping for a lot
- 5:51Speaker 1: better production than this. We'll see how manager Allie Marmel
- 5:55Speaker 1: dictates playing time going forward. Oh excuse me, hold on,
- 6:00Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. From the Cardinals say Louis Cardinals transactions
- 6:03Speaker 1: for July eighteenth, Jordan Walker activated from the ten day
- 6:06Speaker 1: injured list and filler Thomas A Jacy option to Memphis.
- 6:09Speaker 1: So that move is official. Wow, talk about timing. I'm
- 6:12Speaker 1: on it. Let's think about how Ollie Marmal will to
- 6:15Speaker 1: dictate playing time with Jordan Walker, specifically with Lars Newpar
- 6:19Speaker 1: also landing on the injured list. For those of you
- 6:20Speaker 1: who missed it, he was placed on the ten day IL.
- 6:22Speaker 1: New Bar was with I don't even know how to
- 6:25Speaker 1: say it, the same rib issue that had plagued him
- 6:28Speaker 1: for multiple weeks in July. So he's going to hit
- 6:30Speaker 1: the tenda IL. He's going to miss at least two weeks,
- 6:32Speaker 1: most likely. We'll see how the All Star break and
- 6:34Speaker 1: just an overall break from baseball help Newpar. What we
- 6:38Speaker 1: do know is that this will open the door for
- 6:39Speaker 1: consistent playing time to continue for Alec Burlison, who has
- 6:42Speaker 1: earned it. He has been one of the Cardinals' most
- 6:44Speaker 1: productive hitters, so he'll most likely get time in the
- 6:47Speaker 1: corner outfield, most likely right field in new Bar's absence.
- 6:51Speaker 1: What this means for Jordan Walker. Well, I asked Ollie
- 6:53Speaker 1: Marmal that up at the Athletic we have a second
- 6:56Speaker 1: half storylines to watch, starting with the trade ofline. We
- 6:58Speaker 1: have that for almost every team, So regardless of who
- 7:01Speaker 1: you're looking for, whether it's the Cardinals, the Cubs, the Brids, etc.
- 7:04Speaker 1: We have that for you in this story. However, right
- 7:08Speaker 1: before the All Star break, I did ask Olli Marmal
- 7:10Speaker 1: how he would manage playing time in the second half
- 7:12Speaker 1: and if the team continues to contend, if that would
- 7:16Speaker 1: impact who he plays or not. And I know many
- 7:19Speaker 1: of you are we don't particularly love listening to the
- 7:23Speaker 1: manager at times, but I will say he has gotten
- 7:25Speaker 1: very good at saying things and meaning something between the lines.
- 7:29Speaker 1: So I'll read this quote and then I'll explain it
- 7:30Speaker 1: to you. Ollie Marmal said, in my opinion, we've given
- 7:33Speaker 1: opportunity to everybody at this point, so we'll mix and
- 7:36Speaker 1: match and continue to play guys that are deserving that.
- 7:39Speaker 1: He would, later in that same question go on to say,
- 7:42Speaker 1: we've given ourselves a shot while developing. I'll continue to
- 7:45Speaker 1: find ways and I think we've threaded that as much
- 7:46Speaker 1: as we can. I don't think we'll veer from it,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but all being heavier as we get further into the
- 7:51Speaker 1: second half on playing guys that are deserving. It's not
- 7:54Speaker 1: just runway for the sake of runway, So in my mind,
- 7:57Speaker 1: guys that are deserving a play time based on performance.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Alif Erlison evon Herrera hands down, and the Cardinals already
- 8:04Speaker 1: stated that Herrera will be there starting DH going forward
- 8:08Speaker 1: for the rest of the season, they are going to
- 8:09Speaker 1: limit his time behind the plate in efforts to preserve
- 8:12Speaker 1: his lower body health. He's already had two lower leg
- 8:15Speaker 1: injuries this year, and in case we didn't notice over
- 8:18Speaker 1: the three and a half weeks he was on the
- 8:19Speaker 1: injured list this last time, the offense really takes a
- 8:22Speaker 1: hit without Yvon Herrera. So what this means for Herrera's
- 8:25Speaker 1: catching future, that's a decision for the offseason, But right now,
- 8:28Speaker 1: going forward, you can expect a pencil in Herrera as
- 8:30Speaker 1: the everyday DH and Burlason again, like we just talked about,
- 8:34Speaker 1: kind of while unfortunate for newpar does make a lot
- 8:37Speaker 1: of sense for him to just take over the corner
- 8:38Speaker 1: outfield spot because you can't really take his vat out
- 8:40Speaker 1: of the lineup either. Now, if you're looking at guys
- 8:43Speaker 1: that have really performed over the last month or so,
- 8:45Speaker 1: my eyes are on Nolan Gorman. Looking at his stats,
- 8:48Speaker 1: let me find those for you. He played since June first.
- 8:52Speaker 1: He's played in thirty four games, hit two forty five,
- 8:55Speaker 1: which is okay, but I think totally fine for a
- 8:58Speaker 1: power hitter. Here are the numbers. I like a five
- 9:00Speaker 1: hundred slugging percentage and eight home runs. Again that since
- 9:04Speaker 1: June first, does he pack value as a left handed
- 9:06Speaker 1: bat off the bench? Yes? Are the Cardinals right and
- 9:09Speaker 1: not wanting to limit his role to that? Also? Yes,
- 9:12Speaker 1: Nolan Gorman, while there is a little bit of some
- 9:16Speaker 1: I don't know whatever, the opposite of flexibility is defensively,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know, he's an average second baseman. He's probably a
- 9:21Speaker 1: better third baseman, but that's going to be taken by
- 9:23Speaker 1: Nolan Arnado. Uh. That's it makes him hard to play
- 9:26Speaker 1: every day, especially with Herrera taking over as the everyday DH.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But the Cardinals are right to try to continue to
- 9:31Speaker 1: find playing time for Gorman because he is and he's
- 9:33Speaker 1: always been one of those hitters where the more you
- 9:36Speaker 1: play him, the better he is and when you have
- 9:38Speaker 1: that left handed thump that Gorman has been able to
- 9:42Speaker 1: show consistently, you play that. So those are the three
- 9:45Speaker 1: names that I think have really warranted playing time here
- 9:48Speaker 1: outside of the regular starters in Arnatto, Contrarist Donovan. And
- 9:51Speaker 1: when you know the drill with those four players, we'll
- 9:54Speaker 1: see what this means for Jordan Walker. He's gonna have
- 9:57Speaker 1: some chances to play. But it would not surprise me
- 9:59Speaker 1: if Walker relegated to a bench role or only starting
- 10:02Speaker 1: verse lefties. That is my inclination of what will happen
- 10:04Speaker 1: as we kick off the second half, but we will
- 10:07Speaker 1: wait and see. Again, I'm not in Arizona, but we'll
- 10:10Speaker 1: be following along from home or from my parents' house,
- 10:13Speaker 1: as we all can tell. So again, when we're thinking
- 10:18Speaker 1: about the Cardinals in the next ten games, it would
- 10:21Speaker 1: not surprise me if Alli Marmal plays his best nine
- 10:23Speaker 1: because they are trying to sneak into the playoffs and
- 10:27Speaker 1: try to play competitive baseball. And we can have a
- 10:28Speaker 1: separate conversation if that's the right thing to do or not,
- 10:31Speaker 1: or if they should remain focused on the future. If
- 10:33Speaker 1: you in case you missed it, I don't know why
- 10:36Speaker 1: this pencil in my hand whatever. In case you missed it,
- 10:38Speaker 1: Joe Buck did a really strong interview with the Morning
- 10:42Speaker 1: Show on one on one ESPN, Tim mccrin and all
- 10:44Speaker 1: those guys, and he I thought shared some really strong
- 10:48Speaker 1: insight that many of you fans share as well, where
- 10:52Speaker 1: this twenty twenty five Cardinals team has exceeded expectations and
- 10:56Speaker 1: a ton of credit goes to the players, and I
- 10:57Speaker 1: know not a lot of you want to hear it,
- 10:59Speaker 1: a ton of credit goes to the coaching staff as well,
- 11:01Speaker 1: for getting the most out of their players and really
- 11:03Speaker 1: taking this development year by storm. That doesn't mean they're
- 11:07Speaker 1: a World Series team as currently constructed, the same as
- 11:09Speaker 1: Cardinals are not a world serious team. You can make
- 11:11Speaker 1: the argument that is currently constructed, they're not even a
- 11:13Speaker 1: playoff team. Can they fight and scrap to get into
- 11:16Speaker 1: the wild card? Sure? Should they do that at the
- 11:19Speaker 1: expense of blowing up their future plans. I am under
- 11:22Speaker 1: the belief that they should not, and I think many
- 11:24Speaker 1: of you share that same sentiment. I'm never going to
- 11:26Speaker 1: knock a team for trying to get in it, you know,
- 11:28Speaker 1: I think there are so many teams like the Rockies,
- 11:30Speaker 1: the A's the Marlins that are just embarrassing for the sport,
- 11:34Speaker 1: right and the Cardinals have been embarrassed in their own
- 11:37Speaker 1: right because they have such high standards and have fallen
- 11:39Speaker 1: well short of them over the last three seasons. But again,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I believe a team should go for it if they
- 11:45Speaker 1: have the potential to. I just don't see the Cardinals
- 11:48Speaker 1: going for it this deadline in a way that actually
- 11:50Speaker 1: makes them true postseason contenders. I see them doing exactly
- 11:54Speaker 1: what they did in twenty four and trying and improve
- 11:55Speaker 1: on the margins, hope to get lucky and sneak in.
- 11:58Speaker 1: And that's where I think fans are frustrated because it's
- 12:00Speaker 1: the same m O every single time, and this is
- 12:04Speaker 1: not a team that should be settling for wildcard appearances.
- 12:06Speaker 1: They're not even winning the wildcard games. In five years
- 12:09Speaker 1: covering the scene with Cardinals, I've covered three post season
- 12:11Speaker 1: games and I have covered zero wins. So that kind
- 12:13Speaker 1: of goes to show where the Cardinals postseason philosophy is
- 12:16Speaker 1: right now. Lots to think about when we look at
- 12:18Speaker 1: John Mozaylac in the next ten days and how Ollie
- 12:20Speaker 1: Marmal plays his hands with his players. You hope to
- 12:24Speaker 1: take advantage of the Diamondbacks, because the Cardinals can more
- 12:26Speaker 1: or less decide the Diamondback seas in the series. You
- 12:29Speaker 1: hope to take advantage against the Rockies, but the way
- 12:31Speaker 1: the pitching staff has looked in July, coursefield is not
- 12:33Speaker 1: really where you want to be for a lot of
- 12:34Speaker 1: these pitch to contact guys. The Cardinals have not set
- 12:37Speaker 1: their rotation outside of Arizona. They'll go Polane today, sunny,
- 12:41Speaker 1: gray Saturday, Miles Michael a Sunday. All signs point to
- 12:44Speaker 1: Eric Fetty taking a start against the Rockies, though, so
- 12:46Speaker 1: we'll see how that goes. And then four games against
- 12:49Speaker 1: the Padres, and they're a threat. As we know. Former
- 12:53Speaker 1: Cardinals manager Mike shult be back in Saint Louis, and
- 12:55Speaker 1: this is a Padres team that I expects to be
- 12:57Speaker 1: all in it. Their President Baseball Operations AJ as one
- 13:00Speaker 1: of the more unhinged executives when it comes to the
- 13:03Speaker 1: trade deadlines. So three tough draws and then could the
- 13:06Speaker 1: Cardinals go into the Miami Series undecided of their plans.
- 13:10Speaker 1: They could, but that's kinding it real close to the deadline.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I will say though, in the years that I've covered
- 13:15Speaker 1: the Cardinals. There has been no better deadline dealer than
- 13:18Speaker 1: John Moseylock. I mean, talk about a buzzer beater. He's
- 13:21Speaker 1: had one of those for five years. So I'm prepared
- 13:24Speaker 1: for this to go down to the wire. Cardinals fans,
- 13:26Speaker 1: you should as well. All right, let's hear from our
- 13:29Speaker 1: partners at Draft Kings real quickly. Our player spotlight powered
- 13:43Speaker 1: by DraftKings is indeed Jordan Walker. So we went over
- 13:47Speaker 1: his stats in the first half. We talked about this
- 13:50Speaker 1: a little bit on the show. The Cardinals kept Jordan
- 13:53Speaker 1: Walker in double A because they wanted to work on
- 13:55Speaker 1: his approach during his rehab assignment. It's the same things
- 13:57Speaker 1: that they've been dealing with for the last couple of years.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Jordan Walker is still struggling to lay off the slider
- 14:02Speaker 1: low and away and have just better pitch selection. Hasn't
- 14:06Speaker 1: done a very nice job of getting the ball in
- 14:07Speaker 1: the air, the same things that this organization has been
- 14:09Speaker 1: working with him for years. And the thought was down
- 14:12Speaker 1: in Springfield, with lesser competition but better technology and better
- 14:16Speaker 1: resources than Memphis, if you will, he would have a
- 14:20Speaker 1: better chance at making those changes. Again, we don't know
- 14:23Speaker 1: where he's going to play My opinion is that he
- 14:26Speaker 1: will have his playing times somewhat regulated. Maybe that changes
- 14:29Speaker 1: in the second half depending on what the Cardinals do
- 14:31Speaker 1: at the trade deadline. But it is a make it
- 14:34Speaker 1: or break it season from Jordan Walker, and I've seen
- 14:36Speaker 1: some trade speculation involved with Walker, and I would like
- 14:38Speaker 1: to caution you all. Here's my reporter soapbox urge. If
- 14:43Speaker 1: you're not seeing news or rumors from the established National
- 14:47Speaker 1: League reporters or your local beat, really try to temper
- 14:51Speaker 1: your expectations this year. Specifically because there are very limited
- 14:55Speaker 1: stars available on the market, and because the market is
- 14:57Speaker 1: still relatively undefined, you're seeing a lot of rumor flying
- 15:00Speaker 1: everywhere just for the sake of starting a conversation. Just
- 15:03Speaker 1: because you see a rumor floated on Twitter, it does
- 15:05Speaker 1: not mean that it is an actual legit circumstance. And look, guys,
- 15:09Speaker 1: sometimes US reporters will get rumors and end up being
- 15:12Speaker 1: exactly that. But it's our job to decide what is
- 15:15Speaker 1: true and what is not and to figure that out
- 15:17Speaker 1: before we report it. So, I know, just speaking for
- 15:20Speaker 1: the Cardinals beat, speaking for the writers the Athletic, basically
- 15:23Speaker 1: any beat writer that you know, we take real strong
- 15:26Speaker 1: pride in making sure what we get out there is accurate.
- 15:29Speaker 1: This year, in particular, you will see a lot of rumors,
- 15:31Speaker 1: it doesn't mean that they're true, Which brings my point
- 15:33Speaker 1: about Jordan Walker. You will hear his name being floated
- 15:36Speaker 1: around in possible trade propositions. Well, I don't think that's
- 15:40Speaker 1: out of the question come the off season. I would
- 15:42Speaker 1: be very surprised if a trade of Jordan Walker happens
- 15:45Speaker 1: this July, mainly because of what we already talked about.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Unless John Mozelac and Heiin Bloom work together on this trade,
- 15:52Speaker 1: it doesn't make a lot of sense for an outgoing
- 15:54Speaker 1: president based operations to trade a player with ample years
- 15:57Speaker 1: of control, a former first round pick, ahead of a
- 15:59Speaker 1: new front office taking over. You never know what Hein
- 16:02Speaker 1: Bloom and his front office, which we don't even know
- 16:04Speaker 1: what that looks like yet, might think of Jordan Walker.
- 16:06Speaker 1: So is it tantalizing to think that moving Jordan Walker
- 16:10Speaker 1: couldn't get you a big player? Yes, because I think
- 16:12Speaker 1: that it could. Is that where the Cardinals are right
- 16:14Speaker 1: now and their restructure, probably not. When we talk to
- 16:18Speaker 1: John Mozaelak at Wrigley Field over fourth of July weekend,
- 16:20Speaker 1: he did say the players that we would be looking
- 16:22Speaker 1: to trade if we didn't end up selling are those
- 16:24Speaker 1: on expiring contracts, So that would be guys like Eric Fetty,
- 16:28Speaker 1: who we know that they're trying to trade regardless, Steven Mattsfield, Mayton,
- 16:31Speaker 1: Ryan Helsley, and then Miles Michlist maybe, but he has
- 16:34Speaker 1: a full note trade cause so I highly doubt that.
- 16:37Speaker 1: So that's your player spotlight again presented by Draft Kings.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Let's talk about pick six. So Bernie obviously is not
- 16:47Speaker 1: on the show, but I'm going to read his pics
- 16:49Speaker 1: for you. He has two Pittsburgh's O'Neil Cruz. He's taking
- 16:56Speaker 1: the higher than one point five combined hits, runs and
- 16:58Speaker 1: RBIs against the visit in White Sox. Chicago starting picher
- 17:02Speaker 1: Jonathan Cannon has a four to nine to seven road
- 17:04Speaker 1: ERA this season. Second pick Washington's James Woods, fresh off
- 17:08Speaker 1: the home run derby, He's taking the higher than point
- 17:10Speaker 1: five home runs against the visiting San Diego Padres. Dylan Cees,
- 17:14Speaker 1: the opposing starter, has a six point twenty seven road
- 17:17Speaker 1: ERA this year. And if you're looking for a local
- 17:20Speaker 1: pick for tonight's game against the Diamondbacks, why not go
- 17:23Speaker 1: with Nolan Gorman picking the higher and n point five
- 17:26Speaker 1: homers tonight. Brandon Fatt has allowed seventeen homers this season.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Gorman and Arizona native He's back home, probably fired up.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So those are Bernie's picks four. DraftKings Pick six. You

- 18:16Speaker 1: All right, Like we talked about, trade deadline, Watch is
- 18:18Speaker 1: officially on a couple of moves taking place over the
- 18:21Speaker 1: All Star break. We will see more teams in the
- 18:24Speaker 1: mix again as we wait for this market to kind
- 18:26Speaker 1: of define itself. Teams I expect to be in the
- 18:29Speaker 1: Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Philadelphia a Phillies
- 18:32Speaker 1: on bullpen help. New York Yankee general manager Brian Cashman
- 18:35Speaker 1: has pledged an all in approach. They really need a
- 18:37Speaker 1: third basement. The odds of that third basement being no
- 18:39Speaker 1: one are not very slim. Let me just throw that
- 18:41Speaker 1: out there. Big game changers for teams looking to buy
- 18:45Speaker 1: could be again the Diamondbacks, could be the Cardinals. It
- 18:49Speaker 1: seems like the Royals are kind of in on a
- 18:51Speaker 1: gentle buy with their trade for Adam Fraser. The Guardians
- 18:54Speaker 1: have Emmanuel Cosse, so probably one of the more coveted believers.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Marian Helsley obviously not as dominant as last year. I
- 19:02Speaker 1: still don't believe the Cardinals are inclined to move him.
- 19:04Speaker 1: In fact, that was my bold prediction for The Athletic,
- 19:06Speaker 1: which a lot of you. The Athletic just did thirty
- 19:09Speaker 1: bold predictions for thirty teams at the trade deadline, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: many of you rightfully commented that it's not really bold
- 19:15Speaker 1: to predict the Cardinals not doing anything like holding on
- 19:17Speaker 1: to a player. I agree but from an industry standpoint,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think most executives are still amazed the Cardinals held
- 19:23Speaker 1: onto Ryan Helsley over the offseason in the first place. Again,
- 19:26Speaker 1: if this team flames out coming out of the deadline,
- 19:29Speaker 1: this all changes all of a sudden. You're listening on
- 19:31Speaker 1: offers for Helsley, for Mayton, for Mats and you focus
- 19:34Speaker 1: on your rebuild. Excuse me, Okay, just kidding. I thought
- 19:39Speaker 1: was another roster move for the Cardinals. It was not.
- 19:41Speaker 1: It was just clubhouse times. When you're looking at what
- 19:46Speaker 1: the Cardinals could specifically do, they you'll hear this a lot.
- 19:49Speaker 1: You will hear teams are interested in X player. Those
- 19:53Speaker 1: players are going to be Brendan Donovan, Evon Herrera, Lars Newbar.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Those players are not going to be traded by the
- 19:59Speaker 1: Cardinals this year. Teams can have plenty of interest. Spoiler alert.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Teams have had interest in Brendan Donovan since his rookie year.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Teams have had interest and Lars new Bar since twenty
- 20:08Speaker 1: twenty two. Yvon Herrera was the most coveted player outside
- 20:12Speaker 1: of Tommy Edmond at last year's trade deadline. Teams can
- 20:15Speaker 1: have interest all they want doesn't matter because the Cardinals
- 20:17Speaker 1: are not inclined to trade them again. In ten days,
- 20:20Speaker 1: this could all change. Stick back with us. We'll have
- 20:22Speaker 1: plenty of episodes on Cardinal Territory to break it all
- 20:24Speaker 1: down for you. Bernie is back with us Sunday for
- 20:27Speaker 1: a Cardinals Diamondbacks recap. Hopefully we're talking about good things
- 20:30Speaker 1: rather than bad things, but that remains to be seen. Hey,
- 20:32Speaker 1: happy second half. Everybody time flives when you're having fun,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and I appreciate you sharing this journey with me. All right,
- 20:38Speaker 1: I'm Katie with this is Cardinal Territory. We are back
- 20:40Speaker 1: with you Sunday. Have a great weekend.
