- 0:33Speaker 4: Me?
- 0:38Speaker 3: From the color of rip in the world with.
- 0:41Speaker 4: A black and white of worlds?
- 0:48Speaker 5: Yeah, you back, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, chilling
- 1:32Speaker 5: vall ages. Welcome back to another episode of PCW podcast
- 1:36Speaker 5: Championship Wrestling. My name is Wayne also known as Semi
- 1:39Speaker 5: Dry Chicken. I am your host tonight, and we are
- 1:42Speaker 5: gonna be talking not a prediction, not yet, no, because
- 1:46Speaker 5: we're gonna squeeze something in right before we do our
- 1:48Speaker 5: Summer Slam predictions. These are gonna now be my favorite episodes.
- 1:53Speaker 5: It's when we bring a peep in, when we get
- 1:57Speaker 5: a new peep, we acquire somebody new to bring to
- 1:59Speaker 5: the show. You know what, I love doing these interviews,
- 2:03Speaker 5: but I never let I never want to do them alone.
- 2:06Speaker 5: So let me bring out the co hosts. Here we go. Hey, Drey,
- 2:39Speaker 5: what's up buddy? Yo?
- 2:41Speaker 3: Yo? What do do PCW crew?
- 2:44Speaker 5: And these are these interview episodes I want more of these.
- 2:47Speaker 5: You know, these are gonna be nice getting to know
- 2:50Speaker 5: the fans, the people who listen to our show, wrestling fans.
- 2:53Speaker 6: Uh.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Now, a lot of shows you get that opportunity to
- 2:57Speaker 5: to get the more in depth one on one with
- 3:00Speaker 5: the listener, you know.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 3:03Speaker 7: It's always a good opportunity when you can speak with
- 3:07Speaker 7: your audience directly as opposed to just speaking to them.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, doing it through Twitter and comments and
- 3:16Speaker 5: stuff is cool and all, but I mean to get
- 3:18Speaker 5: you on the show, give you the airtime that you
- 3:20Speaker 5: need to tell us why you listen to our show
- 3:24Speaker 5: and why you're a fan of what we're fans of.
- 3:27Speaker 7: But yeah, I mean, anybody who listens to podcasts, you've
- 3:30Speaker 7: always find yourself in a position where they're talking about
- 3:33Speaker 7: something and you're screaming into your earphones or something like
- 3:37Speaker 7: that at what they have to say, or throwing up
- 3:40Speaker 7: your own two cents and contradiction to what they have
- 3:43Speaker 7: to say. So at least here you get to actually
- 3:45Speaker 7: do it to our face.
- 3:47Speaker 5: For really. Oh god, Trey, he's here. I can't believe
- 3:53Speaker 5: he's here here. Oh my god, his name, man, he appears.
- 4:02Speaker 8: I believe in Joe Hendry. I believe in Joe Hendry
- 4:09Speaker 8: can do the London and Paris and Tokyo, America, Scotland
- 4:15Speaker 8: and Canada and Mexico. This say, I believe in Joe Henry.
- 4:22Speaker 8: I believe in Joe Henry.
- 4:36Speaker 5: I believe in doil Oh it's me.
- 4:40Speaker 2: It's me. It's a do oil E. God damn it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: That's how it's catchy, dude.
- 4:44Speaker 5: That could that could be your new shirt man that
- 4:47Speaker 5: in the in the merchant on our prestling tease. I
- 4:50Speaker 5: believe in Doyle. That could work.
- 4:53Speaker 6: I hope, uh, I hope my voice fend stuff I've
- 4:55Speaker 6: meant under the weather this week.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I've got a bad case of Olympic fever.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Were you swimming in the river in Paris?
- 5:05Speaker 2: I didn't say it was a toxic avenge.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Oh, the toxic.
- 5:10Speaker 2: The only prescription for this fever is more simone.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Okay, or to go Yeah?
- 5:17Speaker 5: All right, Well guys, we have somebody new.
- 5:22Speaker 4: We have.
- 5:24Speaker 5: A new gimmick, a new wrestler I knew, a superstar,
- 5:26Speaker 5: a new peep coming to the show. Let me bring
- 5:30Speaker 5: him on out.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Oh yes, it's me Drew Davis, the Max Digital and
- 6:21Speaker 4: I'm happy to be here. Thank you. So much for
- 6:23Speaker 4: having me on today, looking forward to looking forward to
- 6:27Speaker 4: learning more about wrestling, meeting all of you and just
- 6:30Speaker 4: sharing what we love.
- 6:32Speaker 7: Happy to be here, Welcome to the show, Drew, and
- 6:36Speaker 7: let me stay off top. Kudos on the choice of
- 6:39Speaker 7: interest them whos on that that is? Can we agree
- 6:44Speaker 7: that that's probably one of the more underrated interest themes
- 6:47Speaker 7: in wrestling history.
- 6:48Speaker 9: Do you remember just at the at WrestleMania World there
- 6:51Speaker 9: was that entrance thing they had that'd make your own entrance. Yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 9: almost everybody did, either seen or Roman reigns, but one
- 7:01Speaker 9: I remember one dude busted busted out Bobby Rude, Robert Rude.
- 7:05Speaker 5: It was so good.
- 7:09Speaker 7: Yeah, man, I mean that theme itself didn't that arguably.
- 7:14Speaker 7: I don't know if it definds that we did, but
- 7:15Speaker 7: that's probably one of the first themes that really got
- 7:18Speaker 7: the audience into it as far as chanting and singing along.
- 7:23Speaker 4: You know. For me, it's just I love those like, uh,
- 7:28Speaker 4: I don't want to call them carnies, but like I
- 7:30Speaker 4: love that era of wrestling with like the big flowing ropes,
- 7:33Speaker 4: you know, like Rick Flair and Rick Rude and you know,
- 7:37Speaker 4: Machra Man Ray and Savage Ring is King era. Like
- 7:39Speaker 4: I just I love that, like that that aura that
- 7:42Speaker 4: they bring to the ring, you know, as as much
- 7:45Speaker 4: of a hero as they are or you know, heal
- 7:47Speaker 4: it face. Just that that kind of classic, you know,
- 7:50Speaker 4: boxing match, big rope feel, and I think Gloria's just
- 7:55Speaker 4: personifies that perfectly. Every time I hear that song, I
- 7:58Speaker 4: get up out of my couch and just you know,
- 8:01Speaker 4: arms wide, looking at a fake you know, looking at
- 8:03Speaker 4: a fake audience.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I got the I have like one bathroom that's
- 8:09Speaker 5: really big, right, and I do, like Andrew will tell you,
- 8:13Speaker 5: I do it. I'll come out and I'll have the
- 8:15Speaker 5: bathroom and I'll do like the spin to the to
- 8:17Speaker 5: the song. I'll ask Google to play it for me. Yeah,
- 8:20Speaker 5: it's just like I don't get it. I'm like, yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 5: you wouldn't. If you've never seen it, you'll never get it.
- 8:25Speaker 5: I'm like, it's fucking glorious.
- 8:28Speaker 4: It was.
- 8:28Speaker 5: It was so good and just like Doyle's theme song tonight,
- 8:33Speaker 5: it's I don't want to cut it. I just want
- 8:35Speaker 5: to keep playing it, especially Doyle's because Joe Henry hits
- 8:38Speaker 5: that guitar solo and let me tell you, man, I
- 8:42Speaker 5: just want to keep on playing it before YouTube attacks me,
- 8:44Speaker 5: you know.
- 8:47Speaker 4: But it's that, you know, the audience just really clinks
- 8:55Speaker 4: to just like Joe Henry Man. I mean, as soon
- 8:58Speaker 4: as I heard Joe Henry I was, yeah, you know
- 9:01Speaker 4: something that the fans can really connect to and and
- 9:04Speaker 4: participate in. And I think that's what true wrestling is,
- 9:08Speaker 4: is being able to participate with the fans and you know,
- 9:12Speaker 4: working and changing and adapting based on fans. It's that's
- 9:15Speaker 4: the best part of it.
- 9:16Speaker 5: I was like on board with his video package of
- 9:20Speaker 5: just him singing it, and then as soon as he
- 9:22Speaker 5: started waving the arms, I was like, yep, that's gonna
- 9:24Speaker 5: be a thing, and sure be it. I was watching
- 9:27Speaker 5: NXT the other night and he was on and he
- 9:30Speaker 5: did a concert and they were all waving their hands
- 9:33Speaker 5: and stuff. I'm gonna I'll attach it to the end
- 9:36Speaker 5: of this episode. I actually have like the full concert,
- 9:40Speaker 5: so I'll attach it to the end of this episode.
- 9:42Speaker 5: But uh, oh, go ahead.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Do you guys know why I'm here today? Did you
- 9:48Speaker 4: share the story?
- 9:49Speaker 10: No?
- 9:50Speaker 5: Actually, that's what I wanted to get into. Tell us
- 9:52Speaker 5: where you're from, tell us how you heard about us, Like,
- 9:55Speaker 5: how how we got here. You know, tell us your journey,
- 9:59Speaker 5: your or story. I'll let you take the floor a
- 10:02Speaker 5: little bit here, go.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Ahead, all right, well, you know I'll give you a
- 10:05Speaker 4: nice high level. My name is Drew, California, base down
- 10:10Speaker 4: in San Diego, exactly. My first, my first. The first
- 10:21Speaker 4: thing I can remember of wrestling when I was a
- 10:23Speaker 4: little kid is I just I remember seeing two things
- 10:28Speaker 4: Ted DVASI coming out on that on that massive like
- 10:32Speaker 4: horse carriage and Undertaker's purple tie, standing next to Paul
- 10:37Speaker 4: Bart holding the the urn, and I'm in Those are
- 10:40Speaker 4: the earliest memories I have with wrestling, and I'm in surprise,
- 10:43Speaker 4: guys a little bit. So I come from a you know,
- 10:45Speaker 4: I was a total feeder kid growing up. You know,
- 10:47Speaker 4: obviously I worked in the film industry, but I've always
- 10:50Speaker 4: loved the theatrical storytelling just visual component of wrestling, you
- 10:55Speaker 4: know that, the spectacle of it all. And you know,
- 11:01Speaker 4: I h after the film ministry, I got into tech, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Last week, I was in a meeting with a colleague
- 11:07Speaker 4: of mine and in the meeting, we were waiting for
- 11:09Speaker 4: someone to show up to the zoom call. And uh,
- 11:15Speaker 4: you know, your sister happened to jump on and say,
- 11:18Speaker 4: say his name and he'll appear. Completely unknown what they were,
- 11:24Speaker 4: you know, you know, having no idea what she was saying,
- 11:27Speaker 4: and just just out of instinct, I go, I believe
- 11:30Speaker 4: in Joe Henry in the middle of a team meeting,
- 11:33Speaker 4: knowing that any of what I was talking about. But
- 11:37Speaker 4: she texted me, she goes, are you are you a
- 11:40Speaker 4: fan of wrestling? I'm like a huge fan, she was, Well,
- 11:43Speaker 4: my brother runs a podcast. She sends me the link.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Lo and behold, I'd already been following your you on Twitter,
- 11:53Speaker 4: you know, because I mean whenever there's a p l E.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I mean, I'm just responding to everybody, you know, I'm
- 12:00Speaker 4: just trying to engage via Twitter. And you know, I
- 12:02Speaker 4: definitely recognized the podcast. So as soon as I heard,
- 12:06Speaker 4: and you know, I reached out to you guys, and
- 12:08Speaker 4: you know, and that's what brought me here. You know.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Think it's especially a global phenomenon like wrestling, be able
- 12:15Speaker 4: to find people to talk to about it can actually
- 12:17Speaker 4: be really difficult in certain areas, and especially you know,
- 12:22Speaker 4: uh COVID post covid just finding you know, groups of
- 12:25Speaker 4: people that love this and uh you know, be able
- 12:27Speaker 4: to talk about it. That's that's why I'm here, just
- 12:30Speaker 4: be able to you know, share my love for this, uh,
- 12:32Speaker 4: for the sport.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Dude, that's awesome. That's so awesome. And and it's we're
- 12:39Speaker 5: like so active on the discord with wrestling. So it's
- 12:42Speaker 5: like anytime of the day you just have like this
- 12:45Speaker 5: is to talk about wrestling.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I definitely thinks I'm having an affair all
- 12:53Speaker 2: the time.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Man, Yeah, dude, because they're always on the discord always
- 12:57Speaker 5: and some as like I'll be busy, I'll see it,
- 13:00Speaker 5: I'll read it, but like I won't engage sometimes but like,
- 13:04Speaker 5: well I'm reading it. But you know there's some people
- 13:07Speaker 5: who just watched aw you want to just talk aw.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Then there you go, there's an a w chat, there's
- 13:12Speaker 5: a new Japan, you know, there's we have everything, you know.
- 13:17Speaker 4: And I'll definitely I know it's sound crazy, but I
- 13:20Speaker 4: definitely give a lot of credit to COVID for really
- 13:23Speaker 4: reigniting my my, my, you know, my love for the sport.
- 13:27Speaker 4: I've always grown up with it, you know, watched it
- 13:31Speaker 4: when I could. I never followed it as completely some
- 13:35Speaker 4: of my closest friends and then you know, because of
- 13:38Speaker 4: COVID and then you know, I'd cut cable, so I
- 13:40Speaker 4: was only had, you know, work with Hulu and Peacock.
- 13:44Speaker 4: I remember one Saturday, I was just you know, seeing
- 13:46Speaker 4: what was on Peacock and it just happened to me that,
- 13:48Speaker 4: you WrestleMania when Cody Rhodes I guess read debuted thirty
- 13:56Speaker 4: hang back and you know, yeah, I think he brought
- 13:59Speaker 4: a lot of cat Wool fans back to w W
- 14:02Speaker 4: lee And then you know, I just kind of got
- 14:05Speaker 4: back into you know, watching you know the raws and
- 14:08Speaker 4: the you know smackdowns again in between the events and
- 14:12Speaker 4: getting back into you know, the storylines and the pacing
- 14:14Speaker 4: of it all. And it's just, man, it's gotten me
- 14:17Speaker 4: through a lot of crazy times, you know, and uh, well,
- 14:20Speaker 4: you know that's what we've been dealing with over the
- 14:21Speaker 4: last few years.
- 14:23Speaker 5: COVID was such a rough time to go through and
- 14:26Speaker 5: wrestling like the Thunderdome, I.
- 14:31Speaker 6: Actually stopped watching, Yeah, crowd, I couldn't do it.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah, there was there was some pretty that was a
- 14:39Speaker 2: pretty low point.
- 14:40Speaker 5: For it was I was was pretty what.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Was that group? But it was like slipknot, what the
- 14:50Speaker 2: hell was that what were they called?
- 14:52Speaker 6: Uh Ali was their leader and uh retribution.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Yeah that lend nowhere garbage. The whole the whole thunder
- 15:03Speaker 5: Doom air was so rough, Like I remember one point
- 15:06Speaker 5: just going like because it WrestleMania was like around the corner,
- 15:09Speaker 5: like what the hell are they gonna do? Like are
- 15:12Speaker 5: they really going to cancel WrestleMania like they they I
- 15:16Speaker 5: was like, there's no way they're gonna do it. In
- 15:17Speaker 5: the Performance Center.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Were the screens in the dome actually displaying people or
- 15:25Speaker 4: was it all blue screen? And then they just kind
- 15:27Speaker 4: of projected it and put well.
- 15:29Speaker 5: They they didn't start off that way. The screens weren't
- 15:32Speaker 5: always there. That was a thing added way later. And
- 15:36Speaker 5: the screens. I actually enjoyed them when they added the screens,
- 15:38Speaker 5: but like, yeah, before that, it was just nothing. It
- 15:43Speaker 5: was just yeah, I think it was in the Performance Center,
- 15:45Speaker 5: I think it was, and it was just nothing, and
- 15:47Speaker 5: like you could hear like the matt and you could
- 15:51Speaker 5: hear like you could just hear everything, the heavy breathing,
- 15:54Speaker 5: you ca hear them talking to each other. It it
- 15:58Speaker 5: it was rough and like uh Nanda thunder Dom. Then
- 16:01Speaker 5: they start adding the sounds in like the applause and stuff.
- 16:05Speaker 5: So they started feeding that in is a great Now
- 16:07Speaker 5: we don't have real applause, we have fake you know,
- 16:12Speaker 5: fake noise being pumped in, which they definitely use since
- 16:17Speaker 5: then during live events. Not not where we're at, but
- 16:21Speaker 5: if you're you know, if you're watching it from home,
- 16:23Speaker 5: it's like, I bet they pumped in some crowd. Sound
- 16:27Speaker 5: yea and.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Verify and guarantee. From my experience WW Day one this
- 16:37Speaker 4: year in San Diego, those booze for dom dom are
- 16:43Speaker 4: real and loud and it is hilarious and to me,
- 16:48Speaker 4: booling him for me is a sign of respect. That's
- 16:51Speaker 4: I'll talk more about that later. But I'm a huge
- 16:55Speaker 4: fan of heels and giving them, you know, the praise
- 16:58Speaker 4: that they deserve to an extent. But man, be able
- 17:01Speaker 4: to sit stand there and just bow him was I
- 17:04Speaker 4: think the most fun I've ever had.
- 17:07Speaker 7: All Right, So you just said that you're a huge
- 17:09Speaker 7: fan of heels, so I gotta put you on the spot.
- 17:13Speaker 7: Give me your top five heels of all time?
- 17:18Speaker 4: Oh god, I mean there's so many, Man, the top
- 17:24Speaker 4: five heels of all time?
- 17:26Speaker 7: Your your personal favorite. I'm not going to You don't
- 17:29Speaker 7: have to be objective about it. Just your top five
- 17:31Speaker 7: favorite heels of all time?
- 17:33Speaker 4: I mean I have to start with Eddie Guerrera. Hm,
- 17:39Speaker 4: I'll enjoy kay, I'd say Kane, Let's see fire, you know,
- 17:49Speaker 4: I mean early Angry rock Man. It was just so
- 17:53Speaker 4: much fun. Let's see uh, let's go old school, old
- 18:02Speaker 4: school macho man, Randy Savage man, and then let's see
- 18:07Speaker 4: one more. I'm gonna go with the female and it's
- 18:12Speaker 4: gonna be kind of recent, but I absolutely love Chelsea
- 18:18Speaker 4: Green nice and there's a there's a bigger reason for that.
- 18:24Speaker 4: I I have so much respect for that, for that
- 18:27Speaker 4: wrestler getting released from w W EE, crushing the indie
- 18:32Speaker 4: scene and then coming back and just you know, causing
- 18:38Speaker 4: like it's just so much fun to watch. So yeah,
- 18:41Speaker 4: I say, that's my fine.
- 18:44Speaker 7: Like that solid I'm not mad at it. That's a
- 18:48Speaker 7: solid list you make. You make a great point about
- 18:53Speaker 7: with Chelsea Green, how she was let go put that
- 18:56Speaker 7: work in on the indie scene.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Better than she ever was before, which seems to be.
- 19:04Speaker 7: Has worked out pretty well for a couple of w
- 19:07Speaker 7: w superstars who have that route.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you think it was the first person to do.
- 19:14Speaker 3: That, Wasn't it really wasn't Drew was the first.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I think, I think Drew in the class.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, Cody's probably had the most success with it, but.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, Drew's a solid one.
- 19:27Speaker 7: Who you know, first run Drew versus second run Drew
- 19:31Speaker 7: is like two completely different wrestlers.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Drew Drew right now is my favorite chaotic evil because
- 19:38Speaker 4: he's on both sides. His social media game is hilarious
- 19:43Speaker 4: when he when he goes, uh, you know, uh, like
- 19:47Speaker 4: was it slow day at work? And then like five
- 19:50Speaker 4: minutes later, you know, it's I think he's got such
- 19:55Speaker 4: a good understanding of how to push you know, the wrestling.
- 19:59Speaker 4: You know, wrestler's buttons get the fans either, but you know,
- 20:03Speaker 4: chanting with him or going against him, and he is
- 20:06Speaker 4: just so good at creative heat. Man, it's just so
- 20:08Speaker 4: fun to watch it. He's my favorite run.
- 20:10Speaker 5: I mean, like this week on Raw, him and Punk,
- 20:12Speaker 5: I mean, I love Punk cutting promos and he's so
- 20:15Speaker 5: good at it. And this week Punk Punk just always
- 20:18Speaker 5: throws out the best and he's dishing it out to
- 20:21Speaker 5: Drew and he's like, oh, yeah, what you got And
- 20:24Speaker 5: Drew doesn't say a damn word, and he just sucks
- 20:27Speaker 5: all the air out of the room and he holds
- 20:29Speaker 5: up that bracelet and I was like, yeah, that's some
- 20:32Speaker 5: heel shit, that's awesome.
- 20:34Speaker 3: But yeah, he's making a strong case for MVP this year.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:40Speaker 5: At the end of the year we do awards awards ceremony,
- 20:45Speaker 5: and that man is on everybody's list for Heel of
- 20:48Speaker 5: the Year and a bunch of other stuff.
- 20:50Speaker 3: You know, he's definitely in the running right now. His
- 20:54Speaker 3: work is unmatched.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Well, you know, I think another person I'd like to
- 21:00Speaker 4: point out another female wrestler, Jane I was at a
- 21:06Speaker 4: was it Shawna Baisler? Yeah, yeah, I think she got
- 21:11Speaker 4: the short end of the stick coming off of what's
- 21:13Speaker 4: your face? Am I blinking? Yeah? Of Ronda Rowsey. You
- 21:21Speaker 4: know that was not a good setup. And uh, when
- 21:24Speaker 4: I was at when I was at the live event,
- 21:27Speaker 4: you know, I was the only one standing up rooting
- 21:30Speaker 4: for her, and I actually made it out to the
- 21:32Speaker 4: camera a few times. You see me throughout the uh,
- 21:34Speaker 4: throughout the night, because I think she's so so talented.
- 21:40Speaker 4: May not have the best promo skills yet, but I
- 21:43Speaker 4: just think technically she is such a standout and uh,
- 21:47Speaker 4: you know that's she's got some more you know, she's
- 21:49Speaker 4: got some distance to travel, but you know, I really
- 21:52Speaker 4: hope that she gets the you know, more heat from people.
- 21:57Speaker 4: I think she's phenomenal.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Well. So, so tell us about your your involvement in
- 22:02Speaker 5: like with w W E films, right.
- 22:07Speaker 4: So great question.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:09Speaker 4: So before I got into tech and all that, I
- 22:13Speaker 4: used to work in the film industry and I went
- 22:17Speaker 4: to I went to cal State northrig in, LA, right
- 22:20Speaker 4: in the valley. Part of part of that experiences we
- 22:24Speaker 4: had to intern and you know, we had to internet
- 22:27Speaker 4: the studio with the camera house, an editing house, whatever
- 22:30Speaker 4: it was. And through a mutual friend, someone reached out
- 22:35Speaker 4: and mentioned that they have friends over at w W Studios.
- 22:40Speaker 4: And this was this was back in two thousand and nine,
- 22:44Speaker 4: and in my you know, as a film geek first
- 22:49Speaker 4: at that time, you know, always you know, lover of wrestling,
- 22:54Speaker 4: the appeal for that internship was actually one of the
- 22:58Speaker 4: executive producers at the studio of time was a first
- 23:02Speaker 4: assistant director on one of my favorite comedies of all time,
- 23:06Speaker 4: Wet Hot American Summer from David.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:13Speaker 6: Yeah, anything anything that those guys are involved in, I'm there.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Oh, I've worked the David Way and I'll tell you
- 23:19Speaker 4: about that in a bit, but he's a blast. It
- 23:22Speaker 4: was a TV pilot that you'll never see. So I
- 23:25Speaker 4: had to take this internship. I mean, I was so
- 23:27Speaker 4: excited and I show up, you know, and again, this
- 23:32Speaker 4: is not like Sony Pictures. This is not the Warner
- 23:34Speaker 4: Brothers lot, This is not you know, HBO. This is
- 23:38Speaker 4: one floor of a small building in the middle of
- 23:42Speaker 4: La okay, right, This is not a big you know,
- 23:45Speaker 4: this is not sound stages. This is literally just a
- 23:47Speaker 4: production office. And I was hired as an intern to
- 23:51Speaker 4: basically do script coverage. The day I show up is
- 23:56Speaker 4: the day that oh man, is the day that twelve
- 24:02Speaker 4: rounds with John CeNAT Premier and basically rumbled. And you know,
- 24:09Speaker 4: box office numbers were not there where they wanted them
- 24:12Speaker 4: to be. And I remember this. Two hours into my job.
- 24:14Speaker 4: I was still getting my computer setup. Vince McMahon shows
- 24:19Speaker 4: up to shut us down.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Turned that ship off, that scrap.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Yeah, And I remember he got into a room with
- 24:28Speaker 4: the other producers and fortunately they had enough to keep
- 24:33Speaker 4: it going. And wow, I you know, so essentially my
- 24:38Speaker 4: biggest role in this internship was again again what we
- 24:41Speaker 4: call a you know, someone who does script coverage. So
- 24:45Speaker 4: it was my job to read every script that came
- 24:49Speaker 4: into the door, whether it was already in a massive
- 24:52Speaker 4: pile or through the mail slot, and I would take notes.
- 24:56Speaker 4: You know, I'm looking at how many actors, how many locations,
- 25:00Speaker 4: It's going to require a lot of stunt work? Is
- 25:02Speaker 4: there a lot of special effects involved? So I'm looking
- 25:05Speaker 4: at it from both the creative process and the fiscal mindset.
- 25:09Speaker 4: And you know, all of these scripts that I'm reading,
- 25:14Speaker 4: I'm basically doing. Remember back in like middle school would
- 25:18Speaker 4: go online and looked like the shorthand notes for all
- 25:21Speaker 4: the books that we had to read. Yeah, yeah, I'm
- 25:26Speaker 4: basically creating when.
- 25:28Speaker 5: I was a kid that I knew that so quickly, but.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I mean I was basically creating cliff notes for these producers.
- 25:36Speaker 4: So when the screenwriter called, or the agent called, or
- 25:40Speaker 4: the producer director called, the producer at w W Studios
- 25:44Speaker 4: could act like they've read the script and that they're
- 25:45Speaker 4: totally engaged. Right, So it's it's all of my work.
- 25:51Speaker 4: And there were scripts that came across like The Chaperone
- 25:55Speaker 4: with Big Show and Knucklehead with Triple H and I
- 25:59Speaker 4: begged them not to make those movies, and here we are.
- 26:05Speaker 4: But that being said, uh, I'm gonna I'm gonna butcher
- 26:09Speaker 4: his last name. But Jay Schandrakassar from Broken Lizards showed
- 26:13Speaker 4: up one day with the script. I don't I don't
- 26:17Speaker 4: know if I have to sign an MBA for this
- 26:18Speaker 4: or not, but it's too late. I'm going to tell
- 26:20Speaker 4: the story, uh, you know, because who knows what they'll
- 26:22Speaker 4: make it one day. But essentially it was a Greek
- 26:25Speaker 4: god slash wrestling movie. And so he showed up because
- 26:29Speaker 4: he wanted to hire you know, actual w W wrestlers
- 26:32Speaker 4: to play those Greek.
- 26:33Speaker 11: Gods and never made it past the front desk, which
- 26:41Speaker 11: I was, you know, which I you know, of all
- 26:43Speaker 11: the scripts I read, that was the one I was
- 26:45Speaker 11: most excited for, being you know, the Broken Lizards at
- 26:48Speaker 11: that time.
- 26:48Speaker 4: That's so much heat. They were so over with you know,
- 26:51Speaker 4: uh stoner college kids at the time, you know. So
- 26:53Speaker 4: it was like I thought it was the perfect movie
- 26:55Speaker 4: to bring in wrestlers, and you know, so I did
- 26:59Speaker 4: that for about six months. Yeah, and you know, there's
- 27:02Speaker 4: there's nothing glamorous about it. I maybe saw a wrestler
- 27:06Speaker 4: every once in a while. For me, the best part
- 27:09Speaker 4: was that I got to go into the warehouse and
- 27:13Speaker 4: got to go through all like the props and you know,
- 27:16Speaker 4: gear from from from twelve rounds. So you know it's
- 27:21Speaker 4: so that that part was cool, right, You get to
- 27:22Speaker 4: see how things were made. But you know, at the
- 27:25Speaker 4: end of the day, it's you know, everyone thinks when
- 27:27Speaker 4: you talk about film, everyone thinks, you know, red carpet
- 27:30Speaker 4: and celebrity and everything, all goods and glamor. No, no, no,
- 27:33Speaker 4: it's not like that at all. It's hey, are you
- 27:36Speaker 4: know the executive producer's birthdays this afternoon? He saw Australian
- 27:39Speaker 4: Can you find him a bottle of one that's only
- 27:41Speaker 4: found on the other side.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Of l A.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Right, So it was a lot of go for work,
- 27:48Speaker 4: you know, but that's part of it. You know. You
- 27:49Speaker 4: got to you got to earn your stripes, You got
- 27:51Speaker 4: to pay your way, you got to prove that you know,
- 27:52Speaker 4: you can get things done again, you know the Yeah,
- 27:55Speaker 4: you got to pay your dues, which I think is
- 27:57Speaker 4: one of the biggest faults of most film students. Every
- 28:00Speaker 4: film student wants to be assistant director or director right
- 28:02Speaker 4: out of film school. I mean, in day one that
- 28:04Speaker 4: I don't have to work my way up as a
- 28:06Speaker 4: set PA. So well, after w W Studios, I was
- 28:12Speaker 4: very fortunate to basically be pulled into a circle of
- 28:15Speaker 4: assistant directors that were constantly sharing me from job to
- 28:18Speaker 4: job the job, and I was actually I was doing
- 28:21Speaker 4: post production inserts on Snow White and The Huntsman, Okay,
- 28:26Speaker 4: and right next door, uh this this was over at
- 28:30Speaker 4: the Universe. What's nott was this? Yeah? This was the
- 28:33Speaker 4: Universal backlob behind Universal Studios, And I was I was
- 28:38Speaker 4: working on Snow White and Huntsman and right next door,
- 28:41Speaker 4: I you know, it was one of my fellow assistant
- 28:43Speaker 4: directors and they were doing post production on Uh it
- 28:48Speaker 4: was a fast five or fast six. It was Gina Corano.
- 28:52Speaker 5: That was That was fast.
- 28:54Speaker 4: That was fast, And so I got to work with
- 28:58Speaker 4: Gina Corano on the rack, you know. And I'll say,
- 29:02Speaker 4: this man working with the Rock at that point in
- 29:05Speaker 4: his career, absolute blessing. He was humble, he was you know,
- 29:11Speaker 4: I don't want to say shy, but he was. He
- 29:13Speaker 4: wanted to be a part of the process, you know.
- 29:15Speaker 4: He was he was still learning, getting getting his feet
- 29:18Speaker 4: wet in the film industry at that point, and so
- 29:21Speaker 4: it was great to see him at that stage of
- 29:23Speaker 4: his film career. I can't you know, I can't really
- 29:26Speaker 4: say the same thing about him now. I definitely have
- 29:29Speaker 4: my opinions about him inserting himself back into certain storylines
- 29:33Speaker 4: and you know, the nepotism and all that, But at
- 29:37Speaker 4: that time, and it was what he was a blessing
- 29:40Speaker 4: to work with and creative and you know, I had
- 29:45Speaker 4: a lot of great suggestions and you know, very collaborative
- 29:47Speaker 4: when I met him. So that was an absolute blessing. Yeah,
- 29:51Speaker 4: I mean as far as you know, my you know,
- 29:53Speaker 4: as far as my film and wrestling crossover, and that
- 29:56Speaker 4: really is the brunt of it. But man, you know,
- 30:00Speaker 4: when you're in an environment like ww studios and you
- 30:04Speaker 4: have people like Vince McMahon, and you know, obviously there's
- 30:07Speaker 4: current politics. But I one thing that I truly loved
- 30:10Speaker 4: and appreciated and one thing I was really I had
- 30:13Speaker 4: a front row seat to, is this global business that
- 30:19Speaker 4: his family has created is the most impressive thing I've
- 30:24Speaker 4: ever seen. More so when you're watching. I can't say
- 30:28Speaker 4: so much about it right now.
- 30:29Speaker 12: But back then, everything on raw SmackDown, on any pl
- 30:37Speaker 12: e anything being advertised was one hundred percent WWE related.
- 30:43Speaker 4: He didn't have to pay any you know, outside advertisement
- 30:47Speaker 4: because all that they're advertising their video games, they're advertising
- 30:50Speaker 4: their action figures, the music products, documentaries. It's it's just
- 30:56Speaker 4: the circular business of just self advertising. It's a brilliant
- 31:01Speaker 4: business model, right, and it just it shows how just
- 31:05Speaker 4: lucrative and massive that industry is. And I think that
- 31:09Speaker 4: was the most impressive thing about working in w w
- 31:11Speaker 4: CS is seeing the different facets of the business and
- 31:15Speaker 4: just you know, just again, you know, you don't have
- 31:17Speaker 4: to advertise other movies because you're advertising you know that
- 31:20Speaker 4: the horror film with Kane that was coming out and uhl,
- 31:25Speaker 4: yes you no Evil. So I think to me that
- 31:27Speaker 4: was the most impressive piece of it all. Absolutely.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Still, uh I've still hoped on the still hooked on
- 31:35Speaker 5: the fact that you said that Vince tried to come
- 31:37Speaker 5: in and stop twelve rounds. I think, I mean, I
- 31:42Speaker 5: think it's funny that that's what drew into like I
- 31:44Speaker 5: gotta shut this one down. That's the one Vince that yeah,
- 31:49Speaker 5: in person, that's the one Vince where he's just like
- 31:52Speaker 5: it's like that scenes like where is he? Where is
- 31:54Speaker 5: that some bitch. Let's get him, Let's get that some bitch.
- 31:59Speaker 5: Like really that.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Day and Sina was doing interviews for MTV. Yeah, and
- 32:05Speaker 4: they had the premiere literally like the day before, so
- 32:08Speaker 4: I mean they were all in town. You know, it's
- 32:11Speaker 4: not like he was flying from the East coast to
- 32:12Speaker 4: the west coast. He was already in town. And at
- 32:15Speaker 4: that point, w W students was already a little shaky.
- 32:19Speaker 4: They were already you know, not really sure about the
- 32:20Speaker 4: direction they were going. You know, it's like, should we
- 32:23Speaker 4: just be a trend and burn factory where you know,
- 32:25Speaker 4: our wrestlers are available for movie deals, or should we
- 32:28Speaker 4: produce our own stuff. I mean, if you look at
- 32:30Speaker 4: their if you look up their history, I mean, most
- 32:33Speaker 4: of their stuff was you know, it was distributed by
- 32:35Speaker 4: you know, was Samuel Golden and twentieth Century Fox, you know,
- 32:41Speaker 4: very low budget. And I'll say this though, the producers
- 32:44Speaker 4: at the Helm I learned so much from and they
- 32:48Speaker 4: had some very experienced producers. They just didn't have the
- 32:53Speaker 4: support of ww as a whole. And it was that,
- 32:58Speaker 4: you know, you know, how how do we find that
- 33:00Speaker 4: balance of do we do we create our own product
- 33:04Speaker 4: or do we rely on all of these scripts and
- 33:07Speaker 4: you know there's you know, scripts about like a family
- 33:09Speaker 4: of superheroes, and you know it's like, well, what you know,
- 33:12Speaker 4: and we had a board of Okay, which wrestlers would
- 33:14Speaker 4: work best with you know which script? And you know
- 33:18Speaker 4: that that's kind of like where their bread and butter
- 33:20Speaker 4: was because i mean, again, you know you have Knucklehead
- 33:25Speaker 4: in the chaperone. Yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 5: I mean it looks like now, I mean they've kind
- 33:30Speaker 5: of steered away from the movies they've the last movie
- 33:33Speaker 5: they had was Rumble in twenty twenty one, and it
- 33:36Speaker 5: looks like they're doing more documentary stuff or reality TV
- 33:40Speaker 5: with like Beyonce and Montes Ford. Their documentaries are really
- 33:45Speaker 5: good though.
- 33:46Speaker 3: I love it.
- 33:47Speaker 5: W W does really good documentaries. Like whenever i've I've
- 33:50Speaker 5: watched it with someone who doesn't you know, really watched
- 33:53Speaker 5: a lot of wrestling, and I was like, oh, you
- 33:54Speaker 5: got to watch this documentary on you know, I don't
- 33:56Speaker 5: know John Cena and say, oh wow, it's like really
- 33:59Speaker 5: put together. Well I'm like yeah, it's like that's one
- 34:02Speaker 5: thing they do very well is documentaries because they have
- 34:04Speaker 5: all the footage, they have the rights to all that ship.
- 34:07Speaker 5: That's why it's so good.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Well I can say this as someone who's worked in
- 34:12Speaker 4: reality television.
- 34:14Speaker 5: I'm sorry, but scripted, Oh yeah, I bet that's why
- 34:18Speaker 5: I hate it.
- 34:20Speaker 3: You're going to tell me wrestling is not real.
- 34:22Speaker 5: No, dude, No, it's real to me. So like all
- 34:29Speaker 5: of that, How was that Divas show? Uh?
- 34:33Speaker 4: Oh?
- 34:34Speaker 5: Was that all scripted to that Divas show? Total Divas?
- 34:38Speaker 5: I guess I would assume so. But like this is
- 34:40Speaker 5: so much that.
- 34:43Speaker 4: I love the Missus Journey.
- 34:47Speaker 5: Oh yeah, the Missus. I did watch a little bit
- 34:50Speaker 5: of that because.
- 34:50Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, before that, when he was on Real
- 34:53Speaker 4: World Wrestling Competition, Yeah, but then he was also on
- 34:58Speaker 4: w w's you know, like try out but yeah, tough enough,
- 35:02Speaker 4: you know, and all that. And I love the wrestlers
- 35:07Speaker 4: like Chelsea Green, you know, to kind of to kind
- 35:09Speaker 4: of backpack a little bit, but who you know, have
- 35:11Speaker 4: put in the work, who behind the scenes are champions
- 35:15Speaker 4: of everybody in the locker room, who've had to pay
- 35:18Speaker 4: their dues and continue to support and be amas and
- 35:21Speaker 4: just want to be a part of that process. I
- 35:24Speaker 4: love those types of wrestlers. And you know, I was
- 35:28Speaker 4: watching that, I was watching that documentary recently. I Finally,
- 35:32Speaker 4: I've never watched before, the one about the Rock and
- 35:35Speaker 4: Mankind and uh, you know, like what goes on behind
- 35:39Speaker 4: the scenes, and you know, someone who loves storytelling and
- 35:43Speaker 4: the CAFA aspect of wrestling, you know, I do love
- 35:48Speaker 4: the peak behind the curtain. But I will say I
- 35:51Speaker 4: think they went and I agree with Cody Rhodes on
- 35:53Speaker 4: this and in a recent interview, I think they kind
- 35:55Speaker 4: of bled. Besides a little bit too much, okay with
- 36:00Speaker 4: the you know, the road to WrestleMania, because you know,
- 36:05Speaker 4: the whole thing with the Rock, you know, he joins
- 36:10Speaker 4: the board of directors. Next thing, you know, his daughter is,
- 36:15Speaker 4: you know, a manager at n XT and yeah, and
- 36:21Speaker 4: and then you know, we we have this incredible storyline
- 36:24Speaker 4: of you know, Coder is coming back tearing his you know,
- 36:28Speaker 4: tearing his peck muscle, all of the you know, the
- 36:31Speaker 4: tals and tribulations, you know what you can call, you know,
- 36:33Speaker 4: the all the different obstacles like hercules, working his way
- 36:36Speaker 4: back up just for the Rock to say, you know, hey,
- 36:40Speaker 4: I want to start this storyline now.
- 36:42Speaker 5: Really, I really picture him just putting his hand on
- 36:45Speaker 5: his chest, like Cody's chest, like just like wait a second.
- 36:50Speaker 4: And you know, from from a you know, just from
- 36:53Speaker 4: a story perspective, it really I lost a lot of
- 36:57Speaker 4: respect for The Rock that day. You know, I know
- 37:01Speaker 4: he's a great wrestler and he's a legend, but you know,
- 37:06Speaker 4: it just it felt too much like nepotism, kind of
- 37:09Speaker 4: just stepping in and you know, we can go that's
- 37:14Speaker 4: the whole different podcast. But you know that when you
- 37:17Speaker 4: have creative control, are you focused more on yourself or
- 37:23Speaker 4: what the story demands or what the fans want? And
- 37:26Speaker 4: I'll also say that I think the Internet Wrestling Council
- 37:30Speaker 4: was you know, it's composed predominantly of casual fans, so
- 37:35Speaker 4: you know, the whole Cody kry Baby movement and all
- 37:38Speaker 4: of that, right, you know, you know, when when The
- 37:43Speaker 4: Rock tried to come out with the Family Tree and
- 37:46Speaker 4: they tried to like kind of reset his motivation and
- 37:49Speaker 4: made and made him Heel Rock, you know, I think
- 37:53Speaker 4: that was an interesting pivot and save and I think
- 37:56Speaker 4: that's what helped it move forward. But I was definitely
- 37:59Speaker 4: nervous because it was, you know, you have creative versus fans,
- 38:05Speaker 4: and it was it was a really difficult thing for
- 38:07Speaker 4: them to work through. But I think that's just a
- 38:10Speaker 4: testament to triple H and you know the other producers
- 38:13Speaker 4: behind the scenes, you know, solvag and a really messy situation.
- 38:18Speaker 4: And that's but that that's what I love it. That's
- 38:19Speaker 4: why I got into film in the first place.
- 38:23Speaker 7: Yeah, you make a valid point there with go ahead,
- 38:26Speaker 7: no no, please please, You make a valid point there
- 38:29Speaker 7: as far as you know Rocks or questioning rocks motivations
- 38:36Speaker 7: for trying to insert himself into the main event, because
- 38:41Speaker 7: you could definitely argue that that reeked of arrogance, and
- 38:46Speaker 7: since that they already had plans in place, and rather
- 38:51Speaker 7: than him just come in and say, hey, what can
- 38:54Speaker 7: I do to help push this forward, it seems like
- 38:58Speaker 7: he definitely came in and said, well, hell, I'm here
- 39:02Speaker 7: now and I want to participate, but I'm only going
- 39:05Speaker 7: to do it in the biggest way imaginable, which came
- 39:09Speaker 7: at the expense of a stray line.
- 39:12Speaker 3: That everybody was clearly already invested in.
- 39:15Speaker 7: And you know, the Internet resu IWC doesn't always get
- 39:19Speaker 7: it right, but I think in this case, and this
- 39:24Speaker 7: is probably you know a little bit of a Monday
- 39:26Speaker 7: morning quarterback and a little bit or you know, hindsight
- 39:29Speaker 7: is twenty twenty, but definitely seems like this is one
- 39:32Speaker 7: of the cases where the IWC speaking out worked out
- 39:37Speaker 7: for the best. Now, obviously, had you know, had they
- 39:42Speaker 7: really fumbled the ball and limped their way into WrestleMania
- 39:45Speaker 7: stumbling trying to salvage this thing, then we might all
- 39:48Speaker 7: feel different. But you know, credit to the IWC for
- 39:53Speaker 7: you know, speaking up and you know, coming to I
- 39:57Speaker 7: guess the Cody's defense or whatever, but speaking up for
- 39:59Speaker 7: the the storyline that they were invested in and wanted
- 40:02Speaker 7: to see carried out. And then props to w W
- 40:06Speaker 7: for you know, coming out with the compelling way of
- 40:11Speaker 7: getting us that story and pivoting in a way that
- 40:14Speaker 7: worked out for the best. And props to the Rock
- 40:18Speaker 7: for once that was the direction they decided to go,
- 40:21Speaker 7: fully embracing it and going all in in that direction.
- 40:25Speaker 3: Because you know, for as much.
- 40:27Speaker 7: As we may criticize him for having been arrogant for
- 40:30Speaker 7: inserting himself in that position in the first place, once
- 40:34Speaker 7: they pivoted and went the other way, he gave us
- 40:37Speaker 7: some of the best damn work he's given us in
- 40:39Speaker 7: years as that final boss heeled character.
- 40:43Speaker 5: I mean, you know, dude, we got nights in a row.
- 40:47Speaker 7: I mean that was phenomenal, right, you know what I mean,
- 40:51Speaker 7: once he was in, he was in, he put he
- 40:52Speaker 7: put the work in, you know, I mean he worked
- 40:55Speaker 7: him there an hour long matchup, you know, night.
- 40:58Speaker 4: One, so and yeah, And to your point, Drahmond, that's
- 41:02Speaker 4: a testament to the creative process. I mean when you
- 41:03Speaker 4: when you work in film, you know, you have an
- 41:05Speaker 4: entire team of people, and as an assistant director you're
- 41:08Speaker 4: trying to keep everyone on the same page for the
- 41:12Speaker 4: entire shoot, right Like you're constantly navigating, you know, obstacles
- 41:16Speaker 4: in every different department, trying to keep everything running smoothly
- 41:18Speaker 4: at the same pace. And then you know, sometimes you know,
- 41:21Speaker 4: making creative choices that completely pivot the scene, you know.
- 41:25Speaker 4: And so you know, we can compare that to something
- 41:27Speaker 4: like the WWE. You're you're on a live show and
- 41:33Speaker 4: you're reacting to what's happening in that moment if there's
- 41:36Speaker 4: an injury. I mean, we'll definitely talk about this in
- 41:39Speaker 4: the next podcast, but I one hundred percent believe that
- 41:43Speaker 4: it was supposed to be Ilia Dragon Off versus the
- 41:45Speaker 4: same musine, not not Brown Breaker. But that's that's my
- 41:49Speaker 4: own personal thing, but being able to make those types
- 41:53Speaker 4: of pivots on the fly and have that kind of
- 41:55Speaker 4: creative I mean, when you find out that you know
- 41:57Speaker 4: that there's different people producing every single different match, I'd
- 42:02Speaker 4: love to see that. I love to see what goes
- 42:04Speaker 4: on behind the scenes to create these, you know, and
- 42:07Speaker 4: and how they feed again, feeding off the fans what's
- 42:11Speaker 4: best for the story. I've definitely, I think in the
- 42:14Speaker 4: last few years, I've learned a lot more about ww's
- 42:17Speaker 4: approach to long form storytelling and not getting that instant
- 42:21Speaker 4: gratification and being okay with that, and I think that's
- 42:24Speaker 4: where a lot of the IWC and the casual fans
- 42:28Speaker 4: are not really comfortable with me yet.
- 42:31Speaker 6: Well, that used to be the like they used to
- 42:33Speaker 6: only occasionally bust that out, and now it seems to
- 42:36Speaker 6: be the rule. You know, You've got to remember that
- 42:39Speaker 6: that eight months ago, some and so made a comment
- 42:42Speaker 6: to someone telling, you know, because it comes back up
- 42:45Speaker 6: all of a sudden, you know, and it's, uh, it's cool.
- 42:50Speaker 3: But there.
- 42:50Speaker 6: I hope going forward they're able to make it so
- 42:54Speaker 6: approachable again. You know, you don't have to like like
- 42:58Speaker 6: you can't sit down and watch a Marvel movie today,
- 43:01Speaker 6: you gotta go back and watch thirty other fucking things,
- 43:03Speaker 6: right like.
- 43:05Speaker 2: And wrestling shouldn't be like that, you know.
- 43:07Speaker 6: I mean that it should reward you for years of
- 43:10Speaker 6: viewership or whatever, but you should be able to pick
- 43:12Speaker 6: it up pretty quickly.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Oh that's the bad guy. That's a good guy.
- 43:15Speaker 6: They're gonna fight it because of this boom scene, you know,
- 43:20Speaker 6: and I hope that they're able to maintain that while
- 43:23Speaker 6: also providing the fans service. And as you know, and
- 43:28Speaker 6: I've been critical of trips pacing sometimes with some of
- 43:33Speaker 6: these stories, sometimes they're just too damn long.
- 43:36Speaker 4: You know.
- 43:39Speaker 6: Long term storytelling is good by and large, but sometimes
- 43:43Speaker 6: it doesn't need to be you know, sometimes doesn't always
- 43:46Speaker 6: have to be three months.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Sometimes three weeks.
- 43:48Speaker 6: Is just finem Yeah, but but but yeah, you're absolutely
- 43:54Speaker 6: right about that.
- 43:55Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, Not every story needs to be long form.
- 43:59Speaker 7: Sometimes you can just give us the quick popcorn flick.
- 44:03Speaker 5: You know.
- 44:04Speaker 7: Not every storyline deserts, not it deserves. Not every storyline
- 44:08Speaker 7: was the long form complex, you know, intricate treatment. Sometimes
- 44:14Speaker 7: just give us two motherfuckers who don't like each other
- 44:16Speaker 7: and just want to, you know, scrap it up for
- 44:17Speaker 7: a couple of weeks.
- 44:19Speaker 5: But the prime example, like seeing Punk and Drew McIntyre,
- 44:22Speaker 5: this thing's been cooking since Royal Rumble.
- 44:26Speaker 7: I love it, and they kind of warrants it for
- 44:31Speaker 7: you know, obvious reasons of you know, Punk's injury and
- 44:34Speaker 7: stuff like that, and also the caliber of opponents.
- 44:37Speaker 3: You know, warrants something like that for a long term.
- 44:41Speaker 2: But was seth you know, right, and.
- 44:47Speaker 7: And you pivot right right exactly. So I mean, you
- 44:52Speaker 7: know that long form storytelling is justified. But take on
- 44:56Speaker 7: the other hand, you know, Final Testament and New Day.
- 45:01Speaker 3: That shit don't need to be long. You can resolve
- 45:05Speaker 3: that whole storyline in a month and move on and
- 45:09Speaker 3: then maybe.
- 45:10Speaker 7: And rather than trying to give us this long story
- 45:13Speaker 7: towards the climax, just give us something quick and let
- 45:16Speaker 7: that be a chapter maybe, and another storyline that you're telling,
- 45:21Speaker 7: Like maybe you have something long drawn out for Final
- 45:25Speaker 7: Testament as a whole, but it doesn't have to involve
- 45:29Speaker 7: the judgment, I mean, involve New Day.
- 45:31Speaker 3: For the entire duration.
- 45:33Speaker 7: New Day can just be a chapter and y'all can
- 45:36Speaker 7: get in out done with that within a couple of
- 45:40Speaker 7: weeks and then move on to the next chapter. Like
- 45:43Speaker 7: there's different ways to do long form storytelling, but I
- 45:46Speaker 7: think they're kind of sticking.
- 45:47Speaker 6: Tom got to get five matches on a pay per view,
- 45:51Speaker 6: you know, and and some you know, like like the
- 45:54Speaker 6: tag titles for example, can't see the sniff pay per view,
- 45:57Speaker 6: but we can put them on SmackDown before the pay
- 45:59Speaker 6: per view.
- 46:00Speaker 4: M Yeah, guys, I have a question for you, and
- 46:04Speaker 4: I'm relying on your expertise and your knowledge of this.
- 46:08Speaker 4: So I was watching an interview with Billy Gunn and
- 46:11Speaker 4: he was talking about his experience of you know, working
- 46:15Speaker 4: in the ring versus working on a TV show. He
- 46:17Speaker 4: got it was like some Nickelodeon too. I think that
- 46:19Speaker 4: he was cast into like be a wrestler, and you
- 46:22Speaker 4: know he was just you know, uncomfortable with you know,
- 46:24Speaker 4: like having to do each you know, posed shot by shot, waiting,
- 46:29Speaker 4: you know, waiting to change angles and all that stuff.
- 46:31Speaker 4: I think that comes with you know, making a TV show.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Then you have you know, the same person in the ring.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Now obviously, yes, there's you know, the scripted aspect of it,
- 46:40Speaker 4: and you know there's the seven emotional beats that the
- 46:43Speaker 4: wrestlers have to get through to tell a story in
- 46:47Speaker 4: the ring. Is there right now still a lot of
- 46:51Speaker 4: wrestlers who are improvising when they go live? I'm like,
- 46:56Speaker 4: raw or is there still very much scripted beats? And
- 47:00Speaker 4: i'mous to hear perspective on that.
- 47:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I don't know. Oh, I I think
- 47:05Speaker 5: there's a lot of ad living and I and off script.
- 47:08Speaker 5: I don't feel like it's as tight as it used
- 47:10Speaker 5: to be. I feel like it's a little bit more loose.
- 47:12Speaker 5: A lot of the wrestlers feel a little bit more comfortable,
- 47:16Speaker 5: especially ones that were I say, quote unquote raised by
- 47:20Speaker 5: Triple H. I guess back when he was in NXT.
- 47:24Speaker 5: A lot of those guys who grew up with him,
- 47:28Speaker 5: like Seth Rollinson's and they're on forward like that that generation.
- 47:35Speaker 5: I think they're they're used to being able to work,
- 47:39Speaker 5: work on the fly if they want to want to,
- 47:41Speaker 5: and I believe they have like bullet points they probably
- 47:44Speaker 5: have to hit. But at the end of the day,
- 47:46Speaker 5: I feel I feel like with Triple H, you know,
- 47:49Speaker 5: in control, I feel like they have way more rain
- 47:53Speaker 5: or you know, range to go.
- 47:55Speaker 2: I think it depends on who it is.
- 47:56Speaker 6: I mean, I think, uh, you know, a Cody Seth
- 48:01Speaker 6: Drew a punk has more latitude of that kind of thing.
- 48:05Speaker 3: I don't.
- 48:05Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 48:06Speaker 6: Candice lay is uh is high up on the people
- 48:11Speaker 6: they want ad libbing list.
- 48:13Speaker 2: You know, I think they I think.
- 48:15Speaker 6: They probably want to want her to say her four
- 48:17Speaker 6: words and that's it.
- 48:18Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I'm sure they have writers for I mean,
- 48:21Speaker 5: it's like, hey, look, I'm bad at this. Can I
- 48:24Speaker 5: have the assistance of a writer and say, oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 48:26Speaker 5: We hired this writer who worked on the Big Bang
- 48:29Speaker 5: Theory for three years. They know everything about wrestling.
- 48:33Speaker 2: If you read that Gowartz book, I forget what it's called.
- 48:39Speaker 3: The book.
- 48:39Speaker 6: Brian Gowertz wrote The Rocks like right hand Man, a
- 48:43Speaker 6: lot about a lot about that kind of stuff.
- 48:46Speaker 2: It's a great book.
- 48:47Speaker 4: If you haven't read it, we'll check that out.
- 48:50Speaker 2: And it talks a lot about the writing process.
- 48:53Speaker 6: And also he worked he was there, you know, ten
- 48:56Speaker 6: years ago, so it's not quite it's you know, and
- 48:59Speaker 6: the whole because about Vincepin'svin' Spence Vince and things have
- 49:03Speaker 6: changed obviously, But yeah, it's from what he says, it's
- 49:08Speaker 6: pretty tightly scripted. But then again, you know, you know,
- 49:11Speaker 6: Roman Reigns the higher up, you know, the longer you've
- 49:14Speaker 6: been there, the more cachet you have, the more you're allowed.
- 49:17Speaker 2: To improvise a rib and whatever.
- 49:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you can eat.
- 49:21Speaker 6: The punk seth Drew things has had a lot of
- 49:24Speaker 6: ad libbing, I think, and I think all three of
- 49:27Speaker 6: those guys are you know, definitely on the list of
- 49:31Speaker 6: people that it's okay if they, you know, go off
- 49:35Speaker 6: va off the road a little bit. But I mean,
- 49:38Speaker 6: the television business, especially live television everything, so it's got
- 49:43Speaker 6: to happen, you know, in thirty seconds or you know,
- 49:46Speaker 6: whatever it is. So I think they're pretty on point
- 49:50Speaker 6: with what they're going to say and how they're going
- 49:52Speaker 6: to say it, and how long it's going to take
- 49:53Speaker 6: them to say it. I don't think it's as ad
- 49:56Speaker 6: lived as you think it is.
- 49:58Speaker 4: William Doyle, I'm actually glad you brought that up, because
- 50:01Speaker 4: I did want to kind of with that question. I
- 50:03Speaker 4: did want to segue into the fact that I think
- 50:06Speaker 4: as a filmmaker or x filmmaker, one of my favorite
- 50:10Speaker 4: aspects of the live you know taping is what happens
- 50:14Speaker 4: in everyone's earpiece. Coming from Gorilla. I've worked on several
- 50:19Speaker 4: multi camp shows before I've worked on live production before
- 50:22Speaker 4: where you're in the Gorilla, you know, queueing this angle,
- 50:27Speaker 4: this shot, this sound cue because I want to I
- 50:31Speaker 4: want to hear everyone's opinion on that botched sound cue.
- 50:35Speaker 4: When priest was on his back, probably concussed, and they
- 50:41Speaker 4: counted to three and then Drew's music, you know, piped on,
- 50:47Speaker 4: and you know they did their best to cover it
- 50:49Speaker 4: up on social media and to say, move on, guys,
- 50:51Speaker 4: move on. It was meant to happen that way.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Has come out and said like, yeah, it was his fault.
- 50:57Speaker 1: He uh, I mean, like sposed to take the blame
- 51:02Speaker 1: for it, and he didn't. Yeah, he fell on the sword.
- 51:05Speaker 1: He did come out of that, I think said he
- 51:08Speaker 1: was supposed to. I think he did follow the sort
- 51:09Speaker 1: that he was supposed to kick out, but he didn't.
- 51:12Speaker 4: Right, Good on him, man, good on him, because I
- 51:15Speaker 4: mean that was you know, obviously a visibly messy moment.
- 51:19Speaker 4: And you know, you know that they're going from Gorilla
- 51:24Speaker 4: to uh, you know, Mike Cole to the ref. You know,
- 51:28Speaker 4: everyone's just trying to you know, because you know then
- 51:29Speaker 4: you have to rely on Michael and you know, why
- 51:32Speaker 4: am I blaking in his name to basically, you know,
- 51:35Speaker 4: create story like I'll say this, I love one of
- 51:39Speaker 4: my the greatest moment of my life in twenty twenty
- 51:42Speaker 4: four was attending a live you know, raw but you
- 51:46Speaker 4: miss out on all that juicy storyline from the announcers
- 51:50Speaker 4: on the sidelines, and I think that's you know, they
- 51:52Speaker 4: really helped flesh out what's happening in the ring, what
- 51:55Speaker 4: happened just before, and what you know, what to expect,
- 51:57Speaker 4: and that's such a cool part. It's like it's like
- 52:00Speaker 4: going to a you know, a sports event. You know
- 52:04Speaker 4: it is is a bit you know, is football just
- 52:06Speaker 4: as exciting from home as it is on the field, right,
- 52:11Speaker 4: And I think with something like wrestling where there is
- 52:14Speaker 4: storytelling involved, you do miss out on that particular aspect
- 52:18Speaker 4: of what you get every week. And so it's it's
- 52:20Speaker 4: really interesting to see, you know, how are they running
- 52:24Speaker 4: the show as is and then having to pivot like again,
- 52:28Speaker 4: you know, I'll say this for the next podcast, but
- 52:32Speaker 4: you know, Iliot getting injured, how do you you know,
- 52:34Speaker 4: how do you pivot from that moment?
- 52:37Speaker 3: Every now you used to get a.
- 52:40Speaker 6: Especially when they used to like have an international satellite
- 52:44Speaker 6: feed or whatever. Every now and then it'd be a
- 52:46Speaker 6: fuck up and you'd get the gorilla or you know,
- 52:49Speaker 6: the production track for a little while, or I remember
- 52:53Speaker 6: the last time I remember it happening was actually during
- 52:55Speaker 6: the pandemic when one of the international feeds or whatever
- 52:59Speaker 6: didn't cut away commercial. Yeah, when there was no one
- 53:02Speaker 6: in the arena and the rest of the stop wrestling
- 53:06Speaker 6: commercial break, remember that. Yeah, and then you see somebody
- 53:10Speaker 6: give a cue and I go okay, and they're back
- 53:12Speaker 6: in a headlock when commercial stuck. You know, you used
- 53:16Speaker 6: to see shed like that, and I think they've kind
- 53:17Speaker 6: of clamped down on that. But every now and then
- 53:19Speaker 6: you'd get a couple of minutes of the wrong audio feed.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Or something.
- 53:27Speaker 6: That's a YouTube rabbit hole, go down one of these things.
- 53:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:31Speaker 5: I got a couple other questions for you, if you
- 53:33Speaker 5: don't mind, please, Like, have you ever been to like
- 53:36Speaker 5: live wrestling events like pay per views or raw smackdowns?
- 53:41Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 53:42Speaker 4: So, you know, I'm in my forty years of existence,
- 53:48Speaker 4: well you know, working in film and just you know,
- 53:50Speaker 4: just the way my life is gone. You know, I
- 53:53Speaker 4: never gave myself the opportunity to go to an event.
- 53:56Speaker 4: You know, I never had the force have to say, hey,
- 53:58Speaker 4: when is this event coming? To my city, my state,
- 54:02Speaker 4: living in San Diego, it's not easy. The only event
- 54:07Speaker 4: I think in the last three years was Raw Day one.
- 54:13Speaker 4: And you know, again, I follow wrestling and you know,
- 54:17Speaker 4: and you know, I'm very involved. But my first real
- 54:20Speaker 4: live event was Monday Night Raw January first, twenty twenty four,
- 54:25Speaker 4: and I bought that ticket four months before the show
- 54:30Speaker 4: even started. I mean I bought it well in advance,
- 54:34Speaker 4: and I knew if I was going to do this.
- 54:36Speaker 4: First of all, there's no one in my immediate world
- 54:39Speaker 4: that I would invite to this. As as a film geek,
- 54:43Speaker 4: I go to the movies by myself. I don't want to.
- 54:47Speaker 4: I don't want to be asking questions. I don't want
- 54:49Speaker 4: to be answering questions for someone who's not as up
- 54:51Speaker 4: just bec as I am. I want to be fully
- 54:53Speaker 4: invested in that moment with the crowd and with the wrestlers.
- 54:57Speaker 4: And I you know, I splurged a little bit. I
- 55:02Speaker 4: got vi P two seats. I was third row from
- 55:06Speaker 4: the ring. I specifically picked a seat knowing where the
- 55:11Speaker 4: camera was going to be, so that I would be
- 55:13Speaker 4: on camera throughout the night because I want, you know,
- 55:15Speaker 4: I wanted, I wanted to castrial aspect of it. I
- 55:17Speaker 4: wanted to show my reactions. I wanted to get involved.
- 55:20Speaker 4: I wanted to have the greatest night of my life.
- 55:23Speaker 4: And uh, you know, surrounded by fans and just that
- 55:29Speaker 4: close to the energy and the action, it's it's it
- 55:33Speaker 4: is electrifying, it's exhilarating. I watched the injury occur where
- 55:38Speaker 4: I want to say, chiampa. Uh today he kicked oh god,
- 55:45Speaker 4: what's what's his name? One of the one of the
- 55:51Speaker 4: one of the Germans. He like, he basically kicked them
- 55:55Speaker 4: too hard, got concussed and you know that you saw
- 55:59Speaker 4: them and but it's just you know, And then got
- 56:02Speaker 4: Samantha Irvine in person, absolute goddess, you know, you know,
- 56:09Speaker 4: watching Mommy that close. I said, you got some of
- 56:13Speaker 4: the pictures and in in our in our group chat,
- 56:18Speaker 4: and it's you know, and you know I got to.
- 56:20Speaker 4: I got to go home with a VIP share and
- 56:22Speaker 4: a mini belt. You know I got and you know
- 56:26Speaker 4: you got to. You got to meet one of the
- 56:27Speaker 4: wrestlers as part of the VIP package. It was gender.
- 56:32Speaker 4: Oh and you know, don't hinder the gender man. I mean, listen,
- 56:40Speaker 4: I know he's passionate. I know he's humble. I know,
- 56:43Speaker 4: he respects everything that the w W has done for him,
- 56:49Speaker 4: you know, and he had great energy when he came out,
- 56:51Speaker 4: and everyone was booming him and I forgot what he said,
- 56:54Speaker 4: but someone translated what he said to me what he
- 56:56Speaker 4: said to the crowd, and you know, different languages. You know.
- 56:59Speaker 4: He you could tell he was having fun being there.
- 57:03Speaker 4: But obviously it was just a foil for the Rock
- 57:05Speaker 4: to come out. And they had shown they had shown
- 57:09Speaker 4: a package in house that was purely for the audience.
- 57:14Speaker 4: Based on the package they were showing, everyone was convinced
- 57:16Speaker 4: that it's gonna be the Undertaker. So for the Rock
- 57:20Speaker 4: to come out was just you know, he he just
- 57:25Speaker 4: him being there, man, it is so great. And then
- 57:27Speaker 4: but one of my favorite things is at the top
- 57:29Speaker 4: of the night, first and foremost, that entire auditorium or
- 57:35Speaker 4: stadium was packed. There was not an empty seat in
- 57:38Speaker 4: the house on the first night of twenty twenty four.
- 57:42Speaker 4: And right before they went live, Fluffy, you know, the
- 57:47Speaker 4: standard comedian, was sitting on the exact opposite side of
- 57:50Speaker 4: the stadium of me, and they you know, they put
- 57:53Speaker 4: a light out in the camera and you know, there's
- 57:55Speaker 4: just there's just an incredible crowd to see all forms
- 57:59Speaker 4: of people there, that to me really cemented that, you know,
- 58:04Speaker 4: I'm not a unique person in this count there are
- 58:06Speaker 4: people from all different aspects of this world that have
- 58:11Speaker 4: a passion for wrestling. I mean there were like high
- 58:13Speaker 4: school girls dressed as like live and you know in
- 58:17Speaker 4: rear Ripley sitting right behind me, and you know, just
- 58:20Speaker 4: to see the real passion from from actual fans and
- 58:24Speaker 4: not just the you know, online trolls was so reinvigorating
- 58:30Speaker 4: for me and showing me like I had a place
- 58:32Speaker 4: no matter who I agreed with or disagreed with, it's
- 58:36Speaker 4: a it's a global phenomenon, and that really cemented.
- 58:40Speaker 3: That for me.
- 58:40Speaker 5: That night it was special, very different than when you
- 58:44Speaker 5: go to like a sports event because like here in Philly,
- 58:51Speaker 5: Doyle could test this like if our team would lose,
- 58:57Speaker 5: you know, the whole the town, I'm gonna get like
- 59:01Speaker 5: little on fire, you know, or if our team wins,
- 59:05Speaker 5: our talent's gonna probably.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Get your team, not mine team.
- 59:10Speaker 5: But anyway, yeah, it's like, but wrestling fans, there's there's
- 59:15Speaker 5: none of that in the parking lot. There's no there's
- 59:18Speaker 5: and like when we were at wrestlingia. Seeing the tailgating
- 59:22Speaker 5: was completely different. Everybody was so nice. Everybody was so cool.
- 59:26Speaker 4: You know.
- 59:27Speaker 5: There there's there's no like, oh, you're you're a fan
- 59:30Speaker 5: this person, like we hate you, like we don't like you,
- 59:33Speaker 5: just like in football, like oh you're a fan of
- 59:35Speaker 5: the other team, like go to hell, like you know,
- 59:38Speaker 5: but there's not there isn't that in wrestling. It's like, oh, cool,
- 59:41Speaker 5: you're a fan of this person. Oh cool, Like your
- 59:43Speaker 5: cosplaying is this wrestler as the macho man, Like that's
- 59:46Speaker 5: so awesome.
- 59:48Speaker 10: You know.
- 59:49Speaker 4: Well, I mean like I'm in the audience surrounded by
- 59:52Speaker 4: like you know, like right if he was a dad
- 59:53Speaker 4: and his kid, and here I am, you know, booing
- 59:58Speaker 4: Seth and Sharon Drew McIntire and okay, look at me, shit,
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: and you know he's like, oh my god, how could you.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: I'm like, but it's true, you know, dude, like and
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: just but it was all fun and like even though
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: we're like you may not agree with the person next
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: to you, we're all there feeling that energy. Man, And
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: it was again, it's it's so tangible. That's so cool.
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: I think my favorite part of all was just being
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: able to just walk and I again, I can't do
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: this at like a baseball game, because we were just
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: had a baseball game and I was talking to Andrew
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: about it, like like, hey, we couldn't do what we
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: did at WrestleMania. Could you imagine us just walking through
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: here just going woo and seeing it like see how
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: many people we can get that to this woo or
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: just walking around just going you know, we're just doing
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: like you know, la night, like catchphrases and stuff like
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: the response to people who are just waiting in line
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: to get hot dogs and pizza or waiting line to
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: go to the band just drop everything to like, you know,
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: I got a woo with these people real quick, hold
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: on like you know, it's it's funny. I would just
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: be like walking to to you know, the bathroom or something.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: I was just.
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: To hear like forty other people do it.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: The biggest disappointment of the night was that for me, of.
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: The podcast so far, or of the event.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: No no event, you know, my you know my my
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: wrestling love goes back you know past the attitude are
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: and all that, but there's a particular sign that I
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: wanted to bring back, and unfortunately this particular stadium didn't
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: allow you know, uh slightly r rated signage. What is it?
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: And I had dom Dom eats Corn the Long Way.
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: Yes, yes, I love those. Yeah, that that one gets me,
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: just like the Tribal Quef. That's another one that got me.
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: The tribal Quief. I think the guy got like kicked
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: out and escorted out, Like I followed him on Twitter
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: for a little bit, and then he like would try
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: to get back into wrestling events and walk around with it,
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: the tribal quif. But yeah, that's a good one. So
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: and so East Corn the cop the long Way. I
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: love that one.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: That one is they caught it and they confiscated it. Yeah.
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I've had signs confiscated to when I was younger. Yeah,
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: it's it's like, hmm, you gotta the way he can't
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: just bring like a dry erase board. I can make
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: him as I go.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: Right, Uh yeah, I mean so as far as I can,
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: Like I have my I have my eyes set on
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: Wrestle Media forty one in Vegas. Yeah, I'm gonna be
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: there that week, but I mean tickets are yeah, they're
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: not on sale yet, so just patiently waiting for that moment.
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: So what's your wrestling shirt situation, Like, right now we're
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: looking at closet. What wrestling shirts do you have? Do
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: you have any at all? Do you intend on starting
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: the collection, because once you do, you can't stop. You
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: need one to wear it to an event.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: I have one sweatshirt, yeah, and it's my favorite because
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: it harkens back to my favorite era of wrestling and
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: raw is war in the classic logo.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: That's a good one. That's a good one. Hold on too,
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: That's the one I feel like you could be wearing
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: at them all and some other dude around, you know,
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: thirties forties like us, we'll seem like, hey, like, yeah
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: that's right, man, that's all right. Brown panty matches all
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: day long, you know, given the middle.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: I mean, growing up, my wrestling collection was always action figures.
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: Oh okay, you know what teamsman. You know. It was
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: always like like crossover action figures or just a straight
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: up action figure. So you know, I mean so as
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: a kid, you know, always like I was raised in
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: a family where my dad was staking me out of
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: school in my entire life to see movies. Big part
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: of the reason I got into the film industry. In
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: the first place. So thank you, Dad, if you're listening.
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: But you know all those Hull Cogan movies like Mister
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: Nanny and they always like from Space and the Yeah, exactly.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: Oh man. So I you know, a lot of my wrestling,
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: you know, you know, fandom was through that medium and
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: action figures, and I mean, god, what was the first
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: What was the first PlayStation wrestling game that I owned?
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: What was that?
- 1:04:50Speaker 10: That was?
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: It was Attitude?
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: It was I think it was Oh yeah, it was Red.
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: It was like, uh, I think I I think Stone
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: Cold c Boston was on the cover of it. It
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: was like, yeah, yep, I remember exactly what we were
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: talking about because I said the same one that was.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: I mean that was for me, yeah, I mean that
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: was the game that really got me into wrestling. Multimedia
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: was that video game.
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: Action Figures. I don't like collecting action figures, but I
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: was with one of our listeners, Dwayne Coleman. We were
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: aut getting pizza and we were waiting for the pizza
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: to get ready at Mama's Pizza. So we're like, let's
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: go into Cash Reverters, which is like a pawn shop here,
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: and I was digging through the action figures there and
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: they had two in the box wrestling figures and their
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: only reason I picked these up one because they were
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: dirt cheap for good reason. And two these are action.
- 1:05:51Speaker 10: Figures of people who we will never get to see again. Sonny,
- 1:05:58Speaker 10: who's it gonna be in jail for quite some time.
- 1:06:01Speaker 10: So I have an actually figure of Sonny now back
- 1:06:04Speaker 10: when she was in her prime. I'm just I'm just
- 1:06:06Speaker 10: gonna put that out there. I'm I'm gonna put that
- 1:06:08Speaker 10: out there.
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: Clear's day downloaded women on the Internet. Yes, not not
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: the recent son Yes, do sound like you know, you
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: know from experience.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: Uh, let's see.
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: Growing up, my brother was really into Stable. I was.
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: Oh yeah, so it was brock when he was also
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: a kid.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: Jesus, we don't have to go down that road of
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: how he courted her, very very weird story. But for me,
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: trist Stratus was I think my my original crush.
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I think. I think she's the one that helped
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: most of us, Superberty, I'm pretty sure if you didn't
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: have a I think most of us had a poster
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: trist Stratus up on the wall.
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: Speak for yourself. My first wrestling crush was Woman in Peace,
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: Woman Woman mm hmm.
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: The only even remotely attractive female was Miss Elizabeth.
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you.
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: Remember I was a w c W got grown up?
- 1:07:18Speaker 7: Oh yeah, gotcha, yeah woman aka Nancy ben Wah.
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: The other action figure I got was a It was
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: a Vinceric man. Yeah yeah, I thought, uh that man,
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: I have one of somebody who's in jail and one
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: of somebody who should be in jail. I was like,
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: this billion dollar asshole, I'm gonna I'm gonna get this
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: because you know what I feel like, one.
- 1:07:46Speaker 6: Day you're gonna get a Superfly.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: You gotta get Billy Jack Hayes.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: I think I'm just gonna collect controversial superstars or like,
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: I know, I know what's wrong, but I want to
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: get I gotta get a Chrispin wall one. I have
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: to get ted Dip debiosity R. I actually have like
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: a wall of shame. That's what it will be, the
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: Wall of w W shame. Like, yeah, everybody on everyone
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: in this one's in jail. What's that?
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: I almost picked up some Dan Housen merch big fan.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: I just think he's a little too prone to injury.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: And you know, whether he got wasted in e c W.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: I thought his Indian Run, it was all he ever need.
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: And I think ECW My belief in day one was
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: that ECW was gonna chew him up and spit him
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: out pretty quickly, and I think that's basically what happened.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: Well, I was, you know, oh no, I was gonna say,
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: I don't think he's injury prone. I think a w's
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: injury prone. Given to the long list of people who
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: are on the injured Drosster, including Cool Edge, Dan Housen,
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: Eddie Kinston, Jamie Hayter, J White, J D Drake, Julia
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: harric Keithley k Omega, uh merrow Or Ortiz, p Penelby Ford,
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: Powerhouse Hobs, Ricky Starks, Ruby so Ho, Sammy Garverara Samoi,
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: Joe A. Scorpius, Sky, Shane Taylor, Trent Burretta, and Wardlow.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: And that is just a W.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: Sorry well but but but to that point, you know,
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: from my understanding, it's a W is. You know where
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: real wrestlers go and you get to see real wrestling
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: matches and real injuries. And I'm like, okay, so you're
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: you're for going story to put on, you know, a spectacle,
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: and you know whether you want to call it spot
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: matches or whatever. But I I washed a few matches
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: and I was like, this is the sloppiest wrestling I've
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: ever seen. Well, you know, I'm they're they're relying too
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: much on timing with their spots and I just s
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: too many botches. Yeah, and I was like, I was cringey,
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: Like I was like, I don't like, I don't want
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: to see someone get injured. It was hard to watch
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: because I felt like everyone's gonna get injured, and I
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: don't respect that.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: Town.
- 1:10:14Speaker 7: In about two weeks in my area, I'm one defence
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: on whether I want to get tickets to it or not. Yeah,
- 1:10:22Speaker 7: and not just for a random show they'll be in.
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: It'll be a uh, it's gonna be a dynamite and
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: collision taping. If I decided to go, at least i'll see,
- 1:10:34Speaker 7: you know, the main stars.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't think they're doing shows. I think
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: they only do TV.
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: I think I think, for the most part, I think
- 1:10:43Speaker 7: they do occasional live they used before.
- 1:10:46Speaker 6: The pandemic they were trying to start doing them, and
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: then I since then, I don't think they haven't done
- 1:10:51Speaker 6: any but.
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: I could be wrong.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: It's happened once or twice.
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: I love hearing stories from life.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: It could be either you should go.
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: You know, it could be a great experience, you could
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: learn something, you know, who knows.
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I'm genuinely considering it. I want I
- 1:11:12Speaker 7: need to check my work schedule and see, because unfortunately
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: it's going to be in norfolks. So if I even
- 1:11:18Speaker 7: if I were to go, i'd have to it'd still
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: be at least probably like a thirty minute drive after work.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: But I am genuinely considering it. I just I'm on
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: the fence.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: I mean, I'd love to go to an NX team,
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: you know, event I love what Sean Michaels is doing
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: with that. You know, I know he's got a lot
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: of support behind him. But you know those wrestling like
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: I love watching mid card matches where it's you know,
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: young wrestlers who want to put on a show and
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: show up everyone else.
- 1:11:54Speaker 6: You're describing the first hour of nightrow.
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: That's fucking true.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Give give them that, give them that platform to you know,
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: merge with the audience and create a bond and that
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: energy and say, hey, let me show you what we're
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: capable of. And you know, obviously, sometimes they can get
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: a little too risky with those matches, but when they
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: put on just a good math and then you say,
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: here's what I'm capable of, here's what we can do,
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: here's what we can build together. You know, are you
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: do you want to go on this ride with me?
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: Like I love those matches, you know, giving them a showcase.
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: You know, it's I think that's such an important piece
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: of every night. And that's why it kind of drives
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: me crazy when you bring seth rollins back into an event,
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: or you know, you have someone like the Rock show
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: up again, it's like, no, no, no, let's let's give
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: someone else a chance to step up, and like, you
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: have this massive roster of great wrestlers, let's see what
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: they can do. I mean, yes, you know you want
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: the you know you want the veteran All star appeal
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: brings back you know, older fans, and you know, like
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: I mean, I'm so excited for Sena's final run into
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: you know, twenty twenty five looking and I hope he
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: really gives younger wrestlers the opportunity to really you know,
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: showcase themselves against him. But I think that they'll really
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: squander it.
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: If they if they waste that, absolutely right, they're doing
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: that somewhere else too. I think we can all agree.
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: Uh Robert Downey Jr. Is Doctor Doom.
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: That's a different podcast.
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: That's a different podcast all together. But uh yeah, uh yeah, dude,
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: I agree. It's a same thing with like the I
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: always thought that with Money in the Bank and the
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: Roy Rumble, It's like, oh man, I always thought an
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: upcoming wrestler should get that position, get that spot. And
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: then and then it became like, no, we're just going
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: to use as a segue, So we're gonna have the
- 1:13:48Speaker 5: Rock win it, and then we're just gonna use it
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: up for him just to get himself in the title picture.
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: Or we're going to use this briefcase and cash it
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: in the same night and waste it.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: Basically speaking directly to that, Drew McIntyre and Punk did
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: not need a title in their feud. No, that in
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: the Bank was one hundred wasted on Drew McIntyre. They
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: are so over with that crowd and they haven't even
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: wrestled yet, and the crowd is just eating it up
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: and loving every single bit of it. I Mean, the
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: only thing I could think that came from that is
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: it's just further drawing in the point that Drew is
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: getting in his own way and he's not thinking about
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: the bigger picture and what really matters to be successful.
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: And I mean, it was obvious that Punk was going
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: to foil it anyway, so that feud did not need
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: that that title should have gone to anybody else. I mean,
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: the Chad Gables dropped from what's fifteen feet up, it
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: was incredible, And all the other wrestlers in that match,
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: there are so many other wrestlers that I think could
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: have done a lot more with that. With with the briefcase,
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: oh dude, I absolutely agree.
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I thought they needed to get rid of one
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: of them. I hate that they have two briefcases. I
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: like that they just got rid of one of them
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: right away and we can put all the emphasis on
- 1:15:14Speaker 6: on Tiffy because it's Tiffy time.
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: Oh, it is absolutely tiff time. A great example of
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: another I don't I don't really get her team up
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: with with my checks.
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: You know what, though, I think this is a lot
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: of summer Slam talk. I think we'll get into summer
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: Slam on another episode. But but you're I like, I
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: love that you're here. I love that you're your your peep. Now,
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: I hope you're willing to come back on at least
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: to be on the show.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: It's so it's nice to get out from the the
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: audience and get behind the booth and put on the
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: headset and and chat some wrestling.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: But hey, man, we should do some color commentary for
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: a live for a live of event. I think, you know,
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: Michael Cole on mute and provide our own color commentary.
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: I would love to do that, or you know, have
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: you on when we review some We're talking about doing
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: some WWE movies or not just films, but anything that
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: a wrestler's in movie wise, so not specifically all those
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: god awful WWE films.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: But.
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: Yeah, so and yeah, and I know, and I appreciate
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: the opportunity to come on here and just be with
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: like minded people. Man. It's it's great to be around
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: other wrestling fans who understand what I'm actually talking about.
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: I remember the other night I was at dinner with
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: my dad and it's like, why do you like it?
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: I'm like, Dad, I know it's fake, but it still hurts.
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: But these wrestlers are capable of how athletic they are,
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: the stamina that they have to have, how flexible they are,
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: you know, how much movement they have to be capable of,
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: how strong they have to be. You know, it's like
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: we've really evolved from those you know, big meat, slaughing,
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: big meat, you know wrestlers. Now it's like it's athletes,
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: it's football players, it's gymnasts, it's it's it's you know,
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: there's this new generation of athletic wrestlers that it's so
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: they've really elevated the sport. And being able to talk
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: about that with people, it's just it's been a blessing
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: because no one really and everyone's like, oh, you watch wrestling,
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: how old are you? And I'm like, do you even
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: have any idea what's happening in that industry right now?
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: It's so exciting and you know, again, it brings a
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: whole diverse group of people together. That's what I love
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: about it.
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: But yeah, you're absolutely right about that.
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: I mean, I was just in California last week and
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: talking with some folks out there and explaining to them
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: just how big WWE has gotten over the last you
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: know a couple of years, and I mean they were
- 1:17:58Speaker 7: genuinely surprised, like like they obviously, like most people, they
- 1:18:01Speaker 7: were older wrestling fans who you know, used to watch
- 1:18:04Speaker 7: the product but aren't you know, actively watching it now.
- 1:18:08Speaker 7: But just me telling them that stuff, like you know,
- 1:18:11Speaker 7: WrestleMania's gone two nights and that cities are actually bidding
- 1:18:15Speaker 7: for WrestleMania now because it's gotten that big, and they were.
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: Like, are you real.
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: I'm like yeah, they were like holy shit, like they
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: were blown away at just how big it's gotten. So
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: as much as we applaud WWE for how big they
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: have gotten now, they still have room to grow. They
- 1:18:34Speaker 7: can still get even bigger because there are still there's
- 1:18:38Speaker 7: still a group of fans out there that they have
- 1:18:42Speaker 7: not brought back in yet. As much as they brought
- 1:18:45Speaker 7: in obviously a whole generation of newer fans and a
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: whole slew of newer casual fans, they're still you know,
- 1:18:53Speaker 7: there's still that older fan that fell off with the
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: product that can still be brought back in. And that's
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: you know, surprising and impressive at the same time. The
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: fact that again they're as big as they are now
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: and still have so much room to grow.
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: That's the our truth.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: Yeah, true. If anybody's trying to reach you, like on
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: social media, they want to they want to find out
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: who you are, get to know you. Where can they
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: find you?
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: Great question. You can find me on the Instagrams or
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: the twitters at at the Max Digital. And that's Max
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: with two x's the Max Digital. I'm a sucker for
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: eighty sci fi you know, Max Headroom, that was the
