- 0:00Hello, listener and viewer. Welcome to another brand new
- 0:04episode of Did That Age. Well, I'm your host, Molly
- 0:06Smith. And before we get into today's
- 0:09very special episode, I want to give a huge shout out and
- 0:13perhaps a eulogy to our friends of Big Gay Pants.
- 0:17It's the Denver's first plus size vintage and second hand
- 0:22store and they're closing their physical location.
- 0:26Heartbreaking, heartbreaking. Last day is March 30th.
- 0:30So if you're in Denver, go to the physical store because all
- 0:34their current inventory is currently marked down.
- 0:38And here's the good news for all of you in Denver and outside of
- 0:41Denver is that they're still going to continue to do their
- 0:43custom thrift boxes. So if you're size 12 and up,
- 0:48just send in your measurements and your Pinterest board and
- 0:51then you can pick between like 3 and five and seven piece bundles
- 0:55and they'll put together some pieces for you and they can ship
- 0:58out of state. So all you have to do is
- 1:00message, excuse me, you just have to message them on
- 1:03Instagram at Big Gay Pants anyway, Big Gay Pants, we love
- 1:07you so much. I'm when I found they gave
- 1:12pants, I said, you know what? I like vintage shopping again
- 1:15because sometimes I go to vintage stores and I'm like, I'm
- 1:19sorry, was, was no one thick in the past?
- 1:24I guess everyone was just skinny in the, in, in the past.
- 1:28And and I guess you know what, there were big people in the
- 1:32past and there are so many. Their their stuff is just so
- 1:36good. So anyway, big gay pants, we
- 1:38love you. Thank, thank you for supporting
- 1:40the show and thank you for being a staple in the Denver
- 1:43community. OK, and now on to the fun stuff
- 1:48today. I am so I'm so excited for me,
- 1:53excited for you listener, excited for my guest.
- 1:57My gosh, today we have the doctor Zacharina.
- 2:04Me, the live studio audience is going crazy, by the way.
- 2:09A lot of you know, you can't hear, but they're going, they're
- 2:11going crazy. These these microphones are so
- 2:14high quality that they don't pick up on that background noise
- 2:16and that is the beauty of dude ID case.
- 2:18Hundreds of people in the audience.
- 2:20Thank you guys. Thank you guys so much, Doctor
- 2:24Zacharina, welcome to the pod. Thank you for having me, I am so
- 2:28excited. And I am so excited that you're
- 2:30here. Tell me, what have you been up
- 2:33to tell the people about your podcast?
- 2:35What's going on in your world? I am also a dude, IDK studios
- 2:39fan lover, long time listener and caller.
- 2:42I am excited that I am launching a podcast called Pillow Talk
- 2:47with Doctor Zacharina. And so it is a sex positive
- 2:51podcast. It is an intimate drag podcast
- 2:53where we talk about all those things, sex and partying.
- 2:55Our stories are what we've learned and and resources and
- 2:59how we can help support people through fun and whatnot.
- 3:02I also do have a second podcast that's coming out that is also
- 3:06produced by Doodai DK Studio Shadow.
- 3:08I spend half of my life here. I love.
- 3:10This. Oh my God, they're like so sick
- 3:11of us. Just kidding.
- 3:13Yeah, literally, I'm like, I think I see Nick more than I see
- 3:16anybody else in my life, Right? So he is.
- 3:19Mother, he is, father you. Know Nick is mother down?
- 3:22Oh my God, Mother down. And it's going to be a Dungeons
- 3:25and Dragons podcast. So cool with lots of drag
- 3:28Queens. So super fun stuff on the
- 3:31horizon. Having fun, being excited that
- 3:33summer's coming. A 70° day made the depression
- 3:35melt away. Oh my God, I was happy to get
- 3:37out of bed today. I was like, Oh my God.
- 3:40I feel like now that the weather is nice again, I'm like, oh,
- 3:43this is what it feels like to be alive.
- 3:45Yes, you know. I truly forget I've been here
- 3:49now this is my third year. I'm going on, you know, Year 3,
- 3:52and I don't realize how hard the winter affects me until I get
- 3:56out of it. Nice.
- 3:57Yeah. And then I'm like, oh wow, It's
- 3:59like that. Was rough.
- 4:00You don't realize that you were hungry until you have a bite to
- 4:02eat and then you're like, Oh my God, I was so hungry.
- 4:04Yeah, and the the little like fake 70° days that have been
- 4:07happening. Oh, that's my first bite.
- 4:09That's the bite telling me, girl.
- 4:10I'm hungry for the. Summer.
- 4:11Oh my God, and we are hungry. Yes, yes, I'm wearing, I'm I'm
- 4:15burying my legs today. So you're and so are you.
- 4:19Minus the seven layers of pantyhose over top of it, but,
- 4:22you know, basically. Aesthetically, we are
- 4:25approaching summer boom. Literally boom.
- 4:28There it is. OK, tell me about your history
- 4:32with But I'm a cheerleader. I let me tell you, OK, let me
- 4:37log in. All right, let's everyone get
- 4:40comfy. I knew of but I'm but I'm a
- 4:43cheerleader for a while. Never watched it until summer
- 4:4720/21/22 question mark where that pride month I decided I was
- 4:53like I'm going to watch a movie every single day of pride month
- 4:56and I'm going to do a queer movie.
- 4:57I made about 7 days. But still important and, and, as
- 5:02they say, queer stories matter. Queer stories matter for the
- 5:04first week of Pride. There are about 7 queer stories
- 5:09that matter. I mean, and I think I got the
- 5:11big ones. I got the big ones and I sparked
- 5:14notes the rest, but it was like my second or third movie I
- 5:17watched during that that time period because I was like, I
- 5:20know that this is classic queer cinema.
- 5:23I was like, I know that this is on every blog that I had looked
- 5:27at of like top 10 gay movies you need to watch.
- 5:29You know, it's got your Brokeback mountains, it's got
- 5:31your whatevers. But but I'm a cheerleader was
- 5:34like one of the if not the number one for like most of
- 5:37those lists. Totally.
- 5:38I don't know this reference. So watch it the first time at
- 5:41this point in my life, I was starting to maybe get into drag
- 5:45like very much playing in mommy's makeup.
- 5:47It wasn't anything serious. And then I knew of RuPaul at
- 5:51that point, I knew of a couple of like queer culture things.
- 5:54So then I watched it and fell in love, fell in love with it.
- 5:59Could. You not it is.
- 6:01The epitome of camp. Like yes, it is a master class
- 6:05on camp. It's a master class on how to
- 6:08tell a pretty serious story. Yeah, in such a fun way.
- 6:13I so that was the first time I watched it and then watched it
- 6:16again last. Night Oh my God, amazing that's
- 6:19so fun. So you were a late bloomer to
- 6:21this movie, which is the case for a lot of people.
- 6:25It was a real sleeper hit. People didn't really, I mean,
- 6:28like, both straight and queer people when this movie came out,
- 6:33they were like, no, because like the older gay men who were
- 6:39reviewing the movie were like, we still need to make sad
- 6:45stories. We're still sad.
- 6:47Like, how dare you make like a funny ha ha movie in, you know,
- 6:52in the aftermath of AIDS? And then the straight critics
- 6:56were just like, I don't get it. Yeah, but that, that makes 1000%
- 7:00sense. Yeah, but now over time, it's
- 7:03become such a cult classic, especially with queer audiences.
- 7:08But really, it's a story for everyone.
- 7:11It is. There's a.
- 7:12Little something for. Everyone.
- 7:13It's a story for everybody. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:15OK, I have a question for you. I.
- 7:17Have an answer I hope. Were you out in high school?
- 7:21No, wait, are you gay? Just.
- 7:25Guys, I think you need to go. I am sorry there's a
- 7:28misunderstanding as I'm wearing a breastplate, a wig and I'm
- 7:31sorry. Have you?
- 7:31Been listening to Melissa Etheridge lately or considering
- 7:34vegetarian. I was not out in high school.
- 7:41I was closeted with glass, but I was closeted.
- 7:43Was not out in college. Joined a fraternity, my entire
- 7:47fraternity, shout out Sega. My entire fraternity was like
- 7:53the sweetest, sweetest humans on earth.
- 7:55One of them had a gay twin brother and he would always be
- 7:59like my gay brother who I love even though he's gay and I would
- 8:03love anybody else who was gay. And I'm an ally.
- 8:06Literally being like, and if anybody were to tell us
- 8:08everything right now, we would all we would all be supportive.
- 8:10Does anyone have anything they want to get off their chest?
- 8:12Literally off their breastplate. I was living off both levels of
- 8:16chest. I was the Natasha Lyonne of
- 8:18like, no, no, I was like, that's awesome for your brother.
- 8:22Just like fully oblivious to it. But came out in in COVID time.
- 8:26So the story in some ways resonates with me in like
- 8:31certain aspects, especially in the sense of like the denial of
- 8:34being greatest 'cause that was my story for high school.
- 8:37Because it wasn't until senior year that I was like, oh, I'm
- 8:42gay. It was like watching other
- 8:43people in relationships. And when you're a freshman, it's
- 8:46like, girl, I'm just trying to get the third period alive.
- 8:48Like I'm just trying to figure out what the fuck's going on.
- 8:51And then senior year it was like, you have so much more
- 8:54time. You have so much more like
- 8:56perspective. And so I was just like, Oh no,
- 8:59Oh no, yeah. So that was my that was my
- 9:05journey with coming out kind of thing like time wise.
- 9:07Totally, That's so interesting. I think how your story and the
- 9:14story of of Megan and but I'm a cheerleader.
- 9:18It's like there's something that maybe like it.
- 9:22It's almost like maybe they you didn't know, but there was
- 9:28something essential in you that was like, you know.
- 9:32Yeah. You know, Hi, Cooper.
- 9:35Cooper, the dog has come to say hello.
- 9:38Cooper, the dog, said. I want to get in on this.
- 9:42But I've got something to get off my chest.
- 9:44Cooper, if you need to come out, we do support you.
- 9:48Do you want to just lay down? I should have asked you.
- 9:51Are you allergic to dogs? I'm not.
- 9:53OK, thank goodness, because this would be, this would be a.
- 9:57Bummer, I do the rest of the podcast from outside.
- 10:00Right. Yeah.
- 10:01Because the dog stands right, I'm kicked.
- 10:04Out. You go out.
- 10:05Yeah. Well, oh, we can hear you all
- 10:07there. No worries.
- 10:09OK what was I saying? Oh yeah.
- 10:10So basically like, it's interesting that in.
- 10:14But I'm a cheerleader. It's not as though she's like,
- 10:18Oh my God, I'm gay and I have to hide it all the time.
- 10:20She's just like, oh, I'm, I am gay.
- 10:25And I didn't expect that because what I'm a cheerleader, because
- 10:30she's femme and because she's like, you know, got all of these
- 10:34traditional like gender expressions of just like a girly
- 10:38girl and like. This movie, and you see it very
- 10:42early on, plays into stereotypes, punching up and
- 10:47down. I would argue like punching in
- 10:50the middle most of the time, like the one of the big ones in
- 10:52the beginning of her being like becoming a vegetarian.
- 10:54And everyone would be like, that's one of the biggest signs,
- 10:57you know, And it's just so outrageous.
- 10:59But it's all playing on like, OK, well, the stereotype of
- 11:03you're not fitting into the mold.
- 11:05You're not out here, You know, like, compared to the one
- 11:09character that is like, I am straight.
- 11:12Yeah. I just play softball.
- 11:14I wear baggy pants and they're like, no, there's no way.
- 11:18It simply could not be. That, that that wouldn't make
- 11:20sense, right. And so I love that it is.
- 11:23Yeah. To your to your point, it's not
- 11:25a I'm out and I need to hide it. It's not like a classic queer
- 11:28story that that I get really tired of, of like the love
- 11:32Simons of the world. Great movie once not 17 times.
- 11:36And so it's a fun different take on it because there are stories
- 11:40like that of people who are like their queerness.
- 11:43Is this like, oh, I didn't realize that was like, what?
- 11:48This was right? Yeah, because it's like, I think
- 11:53it was really pretty revolutionary at the time that
- 11:57they were telling this story about how queerness can look so
- 12:03many different ways that like, just because you're femme
- 12:06doesn't mean that you're straight or like just because
- 12:09you're kind of more Butch doesn't mean that you're a
- 12:12lesbian. There's so many different ways
- 12:14that they express gender and sexuality that they're showing
- 12:20that, like, the two are not the same.
- 12:23But that was like a novel idea back then. 1000% the like the
- 12:28gay guy trope of the 2000s of like the honey Oh my God vagina.
- 12:34Like it was like that was all you saw on media.
- 12:37That was what you saw so much of just like the most present
- 12:42mainstream culture. So it was like if someone didn't
- 12:45fit a stereotype, it was a gag. It was like, how are you gay but
- 12:49your butcher? How are you gay but your like it
- 12:51was not comprehendible. Totally, which is why I think so
- 12:56many people were like, I don't get it.
- 12:57I don't get. This movie, Yeah.
- 12:59You know, but. My biggest take with movies is
- 13:01sometimes you don't have to get it to enjoy it.
- 13:04Like it's such a fun movie, even if you're not even like a part
- 13:08of the queer community or trying to understand anything.
- 13:10It's so fun. It's just entertaining.
- 13:12So entertaining. That's The thing, is that like,
- 13:14it's just a damn good story. In a 90 minute movie, clock it.
- 13:19Clock it, bitch. Just.
- 13:20Love a 90 minute? Movie.
- 13:21They wrapped it up so quick. Hot take.
- 13:24If you can't tell a movie in 90 minutes, you're a bad writer.
- 13:27That is. That is a take that I'll take to
- 13:29the grave. Oppenheimer being like 15
- 13:31fucking hours. You're a bad writer.
- 13:33Yeah. If you can't tell me in 90
- 13:34minutes, you know who can tell me a great story in 90 minutes?
- 13:36Shrek track one track 2 Clock clock.
- 13:40Clock clock This movie is 85 minutes, 85 minutes and guess
- 13:46what? It is perfect beginning, middle
- 13:48and end. Yes.
- 13:49There's no part where I'm like, I wish this was longer, I wish
- 13:51it was shorter. It is.
- 13:53I think there's sometimes, and that's just a tangent soapbox of
- 13:56like when you increase time for things, that's when things get
- 14:00sloppier or like less intentional.
- 14:02And I see that with like drag performances, if, if there's no
- 14:06limit, you see a girl go out and do a 9 minute number and you're
- 14:08like, this could have been 2 1/2 minutes, you know?
- 14:11Leave them wanting more. Literally the number one thing I
- 14:15remember when I first started drag, someone told me was you
- 14:17never want to hear the critique or the like feedback of like,
- 14:20whoa, that really lasted a long time.
- 14:22That's like one of the worst pieces of, like, feedback you
- 14:25can hear. If like someone's going like
- 14:27this is so going on, yeah, that's bad.
- 14:30That's. Bad.
- 14:31And that happens with so many movies.
- 14:32Not with. But I'm a cheerleader.
- 14:33Absolutely not. Finishes.
- 14:35And I was like, oh, shit, that's it.
- 14:37Yeah. And that's, I think the best
- 14:38feeling you should leave your viewers with.
- 14:41I couldn't agree more and I think that the same applies to
- 14:45miniseries and TV series. Docu series we need to stop with
- 14:52like dragging out a docu series for 10 episodes when like bitch
- 14:55I could have been a 2 hour documentary.
- 14:57Put it in one. Just why did I see the same
- 15:01interview 17 times? I didn't need that.
- 15:03I did not need. It and I don't need the
- 15:05companion podcast. I don't need the companion book.
- 15:08I just like, like let it go. Yes, wrap it up, let it go.
- 15:12Wrap it up, let it go, get to the point, get to the meat and
- 15:15potatoes. Exactly, I'm also are you do you
- 15:18mind that? Oh my God.
- 15:19Kind of just like all all splayed out.
- 15:21Cooper. Cooper is getting comfy, just
- 15:24the slow. This is my podcast.
- 15:27Now, Cooper, get ready. You're going to be sharing your
- 15:30opinions. I'll put up a cheerleader.
- 15:31Now you're. Do you?
- 15:33We need your critical analysis of queerness in the 2000.
- 15:38Oh my sweet gay. People, you can get cancelled,
- 15:42yeah, even if you're gay. It's true a lot of the times, a
- 15:46lot of the time, especially if you're gay, you think you can be
- 15:55the voice of the community. You don't know anything.
- 16:00Oh God. OK, you want to know something
- 16:03wild? Jamie Babbitt, who directed this
- 16:06movie, She said she wanted to create the gay Clueless, which I
- 16:09love. She was just like, we need
- 16:10something fun and light in high school, but gay.
- 16:14She made this when she was in her 20s.
- 16:18Bitch, what have I done? I've just been sitting here
- 16:21gapping into a mic for years like.
- 16:24But have I been creating a world changing film?
- 16:28I could never. No, it that's the same energy as
- 16:30when you're watching the Olympics and somebody's 15 and
- 16:32they get 14 golds and you're like, I fell up the stairs this
- 16:36morning, like I I got a Charley horse standing up, you know, and
- 16:40that's how I feel with stuff like that.
- 16:42I mean, and we were talking about this a little bit before,
- 16:44but Natasha Lyonne in the movie is 19.
- 16:47Incredible breakout role. Breakout role.
- 16:50We were saying she both doesn't age and ages like she looks the
- 16:54exact same but just I mean yeah, that's how aging works.
- 16:57She looks the exact same but older.
- 17:00As I say that take crazy take over here, but like it is like
- 17:06she looks the exact same and like more mature.
- 17:09I don't know. I love Natasha, but when I was
- 17:11watching I was like 19. I was like holy shit.
- 17:15And she ate. 19 director being like 20s, like I love that
- 17:20because there is so much I feel like youth in this.
- 17:23That's like absolutely at its core.
- 17:26Yes, and the way that that Jamie Babbitt talked about it was
- 17:30basically that like because they were all so young working on
- 17:34this set, they had a they were a lot more willing to just take
- 17:38risks and be bold 'cause they were just like, yeah, whatever.
- 17:41They weren't like jaded by the industry, they just wanted to
- 17:44like, make a fun movie. I love that.
- 17:48I know, right? But you know what's fucked up is
- 17:50that when But I'm a Cheerleader was made and it was getting its
- 17:55rating, they almost made it NC 17 because there's like gay
- 18:04stuff. No way.
- 18:07In that era, there's, I mean, and still this is something that
- 18:11is very controversial with the MPAA, but they they made her
- 18:17take out. Let's see, what was it?
- 18:19There was one thing where they had to take out a line about
- 18:21somebody going down on someone. And then and then there was they
- 18:28had to take out like a masturbation scene and they had
- 18:31to add more light to the scene, like to the hookup scene to show
- 18:36that they weren't doing anything horrible was what they said.
- 18:41So anyway, but when she made it, she's like, this is a rated G
- 18:44movie. This is, this is like, there's
- 18:47nothing inappropriate about this, but because of, you know,
- 18:52discrimination. Right, Right.
- 18:54Because it was the early 2000s. Yeah, And they were like, oh,
- 18:57because it's gay. It's so.
- 18:59So Jamie Babbitt said that she wanted to make a movie about
- 19:03what she knows and she is a lesbian.
- 19:06And when she was, yeah, I know. Oh my God, problematic.
- 19:12It was Cooper. He said it.
- 19:15So her mom ran a teen rehab. And so she basically just like
- 19:21grew up around around rehab, around like treatment centers.
- 19:26And she was really inspired by Clueless too.
- 19:29Wanted to tell a lesbian love story where they don't kill each
- 19:32other at the end or someone dies.
- 19:35She wanted it to be like a fun ROM com, and there weren't
- 19:39really any in the lesbian world at that time.
- 19:41And she was like, yeah, this would be all of these things
- 19:45together would be a great satire.
- 19:46I. Love so that's why she did it.
- 19:48I love and unfortunately right now I feel like this story and
- 19:54message like it's such a fun and light hearted tale and watching
- 19:58it as of like this week after hearing that there the Supreme
- 20:04Court is about to hear a case for.
- 20:07Conversion therapy, like reverse reversing, that kind of that
- 20:14what's the word? Legislation.
- 20:16Yeah, legislation. And it's starting in Colorado.
- 20:19It was this like, Oh my God, like this is this silly, funny
- 20:23thing that we all laugh at from the 2000s.
- 20:26And it's like, oh, and I know people personally that have like
- 20:29gone to conversion therapy and like, it's so fucked.
- 20:31It's so atrocious. And so it's like even though
- 20:34this is both the light hearted ROM com that queer cinema needs
- 20:40now, again, not everything needs to be the Super heartbreaking
- 20:43love Simon thing. But now this has also become
- 20:46this like reflection of like conversion therapy then but even
- 20:52now again, which is. That's what's so fucked up is
- 20:55that like watching this movie and watching the absurd satire
- 21:00of it all, It's like, in many ways, you know, we've come so
- 21:03far and yet not at all. Yeah, yeah, 25.
- 21:07Years later, 25 years later, we're still dealing with the
- 21:11same shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:13It's so fucked. So it's this weird, like it is
- 21:16such a lighthearted thing, but it does just have this air of
- 21:18like, it's the not the movie itself, it's the context of
- 21:21watching it today. Blame.
- 21:26Bummer. Fuck.
- 21:28Conservatives. They're ruining everything.
- 21:35OK, another fun thing about the making of this movie.
- 21:39This is This is a quote from the director Jamie Babbitt.
- 21:44She said just kind of in regards to like making sure that there
- 21:50was gender parity and diversity behind the camera and in front
- 21:54of the camera. She said, I know, right?
- 21:57She said. I think a lot of that comes from
- 21:58growing up in Shaker Heights. OH, I grew up going to a high
- 22:01school that was 5050 in terms of diversity.
- 22:04When I was casting the movie and hiring people behind the camera,
- 22:06I was like, this movie needs to reflect the diversity that is in
- 22:11the queer community in the world.
- 22:12The script never said like Dolph the wrestler is Filipino or Jan
- 22:16is African American. I also was very influenced by my
- 22:19mom's real teen rehab and the truth of addiction growing up.
- 22:22I saw it really effects all communities, rich, poor, black,
- 22:25white, Asian. It doesn't matter anyway.
- 22:27So I just think, and even now she says, like, you know, we
- 22:34tried to tell this really ground breaking story and now there's
- 22:38even more things that I would add to it.
- 22:41Like I would have more like trans representation and all of
- 22:44these different things that would be more representative of
- 22:48the stories that needs to be told.
- 22:50Because what queer stories matter.
- 22:51Isn't that right? Cooper Cooper's.
- 22:55Either big ass corners. He's like, what?
- 22:58I'm not gay. I'm not.
- 23:01Cooper is, but I'm a cheerleading right now.
- 23:03He's like, I'm not gay, I'm a doll.
- 23:05I'm literally a doll and. It's like Cooper, little do you
- 23:07know. Little do you know.
- 23:09That's that's so awesome that again, the context of not only
- 23:13is this about, you know, in a queer space, but also 2000.
- 23:19I know the world was different in 2010, 2015, let alone 2000.
- 23:23Like queerness was such a different story idea.
- 23:28I mean, I don't, I can't remember when Adam Lambert went
- 23:31through American Idol. That was like 2003 maybe.
- 23:33OK, I just, I just remember and I saw a video recently of Adam
- 23:39Lambert talking about it and he was like, I was so openly faggy
- 23:43because nobody else was. That's so true.
- 23:46And it just and I remember getting hearing about seeing all
- 23:49the hate he would just continually get so true.
- 23:52And so again, like the fact that that is something that's being
- 23:55fought for behind the camera of like this diversity of this
- 23:58representation fierce makes me love the movie even more.
- 24:01Same. And I feel like it really comes
- 24:04through and just like the, I don't know, to me, it's like you
- 24:09can just feel it. You can feel that there's an
- 24:11appreciation for all of these individual characters and their
- 24:15quirky little stories, some of them very sad.
- 24:18But overall, there's just like an appreciation for who they are
- 24:22as individuals and not just like as their stereotype, even though
- 24:26they do play on the stereotypes for humor, but not in a way
- 24:30that's like mean. No, I think, and it's this funny
- 24:34of they're playing into the stereotypes, but you learn from
- 24:37the movie The stereotypes aren't true.
- 24:39Yeah. You learn that the cheerleader
- 24:41can be gay and the softball player can be straight.
- 24:43Like it's exactly, it's both this like flipping it on its
- 24:46head, but also doing in a way that it's kind of like giving
- 24:50that lesson of like actually girl, it's not what you think.
- 24:53Exactly. We love it, love, love it.
- 24:57OK another thing I also love is the color palette.
- 25:01How? Thank you.
- 25:03Everything is so blue, so pink. It's like being in Barbies dream
- 25:08house. The costuming, the set, the
- 25:11lighting. Also, when I was rewatching, I
- 25:15was, like, very much locked in on some of those aspects.
- 25:18And it was just so it's again, so fun, so campy.
- 25:22Yeah. So like, at the end when they're
- 25:24all in, they're like, latex blue and pink, kind of like outfits.
- 25:28There's this, like, sterilness. Like, it was very much
- 25:31intentional. Yeah.
- 25:33But also so camping over the top and like, not just Grays and
- 25:38Browns of like, they were really playing into, like, this is
- 25:41satire. This is gender alone to 1000.
- 25:46It's the girls in the pink, pink, pinkity, pink room.
- 25:49Yeah. And the boys in the blue room
- 25:51with the blue cars. Like it was so just like,
- 25:55gendered in such a way that was so extreme that it became funny.
- 25:59Yeah, it was so over the top and pointing out the pointing out
- 26:03the absurdity of all of it. Yeah.
- 26:06Yeah, and just great. Great costume and great set.
- 26:09Great. Everything.
- 26:10And it was so DIY too. Their budget was so small.
- 26:13It was so scrappy. They like made everything
- 26:16themselves fierce. I know.
- 26:19Resourceful, resourceful. Gives hope of like, OK, maybe
- 26:23these like smaller projects can be a bit better than
- 26:26Oppenheimer, literally. Maybe I can.
- 26:28Maybe, maybe independent film can prevail.
- 26:32Stay strong, don't majors stay strong.
- 26:36Don't drop out. Please don't.
- 26:40We don't need more engineers and.
- 26:42There's enough. Don't we have enough now?
- 26:45Beyond so annoying. OK.
- 26:47I love Cleo Duvall as Graham. Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot.
- 26:52Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot. I wonder how many, Like the
- 26:55whole bit of like, what was your gay awakening?
- 26:57I wonder how many gay awakenings came from.
- 27:01But I'm a cheerleader. I have to assume a lot.
- 27:05I have to assume a whole lot. Because herself Assurance is so
- 27:09hot, so hot. The fact that she's like, I am
- 27:11who I am, yeah, it's so. Hot and like the bad girls got a
- 27:15heart. And it's like the ah I.
- 27:18Know it's a class. It's a classic teen story, but
- 27:21again with a little twist. Yeah.
- 27:23And like, say you're the, you're the, the Natasha Lyonne sitting
- 27:27and watching this at the, like, sleepover party.
- 27:30Everyone around you is laughing. And you're like, why don't suck
- 27:32it? I'll also kind of be thinking
- 27:35about this stuff or like, wait a second.
- 27:38I thought she was really hot. And everyone's like, she was so
- 27:40ugly. And you're like, you're like.
- 27:41Oh. This is in the safe space, you
- 27:44know, you're like, I gotta go. And so, yeah, I, I can only
- 27:47imagine that there were a whole bunch of gay awakenings to it.
- 27:50Also obviously on like the male side of it, all of the of the
- 27:55rock. Rock.
- 27:57Rock. I mean, I was, we were watching
- 27:59it and I was like, this is classic 2000s aesthetic.
- 28:04Yes, still holds up at being hot. 100%.
- 28:07Just that himbo, a full on himbo is intergenerational everybody.
- 28:13Loves. Everybody loves a himbo.
- 28:14Oh yeah, it it transcends gender, sexuality, time.
- 28:19Everybody loves a himbo. They're just, it's adds in the
- 28:22same way that like, somebody's like confidence.
- 28:25Yeah, it can add to it. Somebody's just dumbness.
- 28:30Oh God, I like them dumb. Yeah, hot and dumb.
- 28:35Hot and. Dumb.
- 28:36I don't want anything going on in there.
- 28:38No lights on, no one home. That's what I like to see.
- 28:41Literally a horseshoe of like super, super smart, confident
- 28:44all the way horseshoe back and they're both hot as hell.
- 28:47Bottom part it's so. True.
- 28:49I love it. Oh my God.
- 28:51And you know what? Who hasn't aged at all?
- 28:52RuPaul, obviously. RuPaul could be its own episode
- 28:58about when I'm a cheerleader, because again, at this point I
- 29:01knew who RuPaul was. I knew that she was this famous,
- 29:06famous drag queen. Knew a little bit of her like
- 29:10old days, 90s, like super stardom.
- 29:12Didn't know too much, but just knew the hilarity of the biggest
- 29:17drag queen at that time and still today of the entire world.
- 29:21One could argue playing of this straight guy.
- 29:25Yeah, playing this. A legend.
- 29:27Yeah, and the. Straight is great.
- 29:30Straight is. Great.
- 29:32And it's funny too, being somebody that still watches Drag
- 29:35Race and is very engaged with RuPaul of like the shit that he
- 29:39still does of he there was like a season of Drag Race, however
- 29:43many years ago where they were doing like a play on the
- 29:46bachelor for a challenge. And like he fell in love with
- 29:49the Bachelor. And every time that they be
- 29:51alone, they just kind of like. Do that like.
- 29:54And like it, literally as I was rewatching, I was like, bitch,
- 29:57that was the same exact bit that he did back here.
- 30:00So fun, so funny. Yeah.
- 30:03Adds again to the just ridiculousness.
- 30:05It's just so silly and over the top.
- 30:08And it's one of those things where it's like the girls who
- 30:10know know in the 2000s, like, you know, it's, I would say that
- 30:16RuPaul was like the closest thing that there was to a
- 30:18mainstream drag queen. But still, your average straight
- 30:23person probably didn't know RuPaul.
- 30:26Charles was. However, if you knew, you knew.
- 30:29Yes. And that's why it's so iconic
- 30:31that RuPaul is the camp counselor or camp counselor,
- 30:35whatever. Right.
- 30:36Yeah, it's it's. So it's the added layer.
- 30:39It's absolutely the added layer. Also, at that point, like Root
- 30:43did have some stardom. So to get Rue in this small film
- 30:48is it had to have been like that script landed on his desk and he
- 30:51was like, I'm fucking with this. Yes, you know, like, this is
- 30:55funny because RuPaul has always like, even though of course,
- 30:59like, you know, RuPaul is a corporate drag queen and that's
- 31:03fine. Get your coin, got to get your
- 31:04coin. Get your coin.
- 31:05Got to frack that land or whatever.
- 31:08I haven't been on Drag Race yet, so.
- 31:12So we are not saying anything. But if I if I were to say
- 31:16anything, I think I'd say get your coin now.
- 31:20Get your coin and share it with me please.
- 31:24Money. Please.
- 31:24Money, please. Literally.
- 31:27However, RuPaul still has always pushed the boundaries of in
- 31:33funny ways. What am I trying to say?
- 31:36Push the boundaries of comedy. Yes, push the boundaries of
- 31:38comedy, push the used comedy to push political social
- 31:43boundaries. I mean, again, but I'm a
- 31:45cheerleader. Is this really, if you want to
- 31:48dig into it, it can be this really deep movie and it's
- 31:52something that because it's so silly, so fun, so can be just
- 31:57like, oh ha ha, ha. It gets into the houses of
- 32:00people that might not watch it exactly, you know, and then you
- 32:02get the maybe, maybe gay people aren't too bad, you know, person
- 32:07at the end, right. And it's like, I mean, that's a,
- 32:10that's a pretty big change. Exactly.
- 32:12Like, people can talk about how, like, you know, drag has become
- 32:18like so mainstream and that it's like not for freaks anymore.
- 32:21And that's a bad thing. But here's the thing.
- 32:23Sometimes we need content that you can show to like a Midwest
- 32:29mom who's never never really known that many gay people.
- 32:34And they can watch like Queer Eye or something be like, you
- 32:36know what? Those gays aren't too bad.
- 32:38You know what? I mean, yes, and I think I mean
- 32:41even just for young, my first queer representation I saw was
- 32:44Drag Race really growing up. I mean like every now and then
- 32:47gay character in a TV show. And my parents love them.
- 32:50They're incredibly accepting. Now we love you guys.
- 32:52Early back in 2000s, you know, being like, and then you'd be
- 32:55like, yeah, yeah, totally. Us all being like, why are gay
- 33:00people? I'm like writing down the
- 33:02timestamps over the TV show to go.
- 33:04Back and watch coming back to that, when Will and Grace, when
- 33:07Will kisses his. Boyfriend literally.
- 33:10And I'm just like. You're like a kiss on the mouth.
- 33:12I'll be coming back to that. Falling to the ground like, Oh
- 33:14my gosh. So you know, it's it's so it
- 33:18does have that power. Like I, I'm such a believer of
- 33:21comedy has so much power to like share messages and what not.
- 33:25And so I wonder, I mean, that'd be a cool question to ask RuPaul
- 33:29of like, did you know that it was going to have this impact,
- 33:32or did you just do this project because it was going to be
- 33:35silly, goofy, funny. Right.
- 33:37Because both both are fair and valid.
- 33:39Absolutely, and both are, I think, a direct result of the
- 33:45actors being so authentic to themselves and to the story.
- 33:49You know I love I love Ru. If you're out there, friend of
- 33:53the. Pod Ru Paul, Friend of the Pod
- 33:55Ru Paul Charles Yes, my friend the other day tried to tell me
- 33:58that Ru Paul was in his 80s. I said bitch, shut up.
- 34:02First of all, it's not true, but.
- 34:04Kidding. One foot in the grave.
- 34:08Just kidding. Not true.
- 34:11What was the Oh my God someone said about?
- 34:15Oh yeah, it was one of the Real Housewives said about the
- 34:20other's husband who's old. She said he's got 1 foot in the
- 34:23grave and another on a banana peel.
- 34:26Stop. That's how I feel turning the
- 34:28old age that I am. Yeah, 1 foot in the grave,
- 34:31another on a banana peel. That shit was so funny to me
- 34:34anyways, that that is not applied to RuPaul, but I mean,
- 34:38truly an ageless person. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:41And who pops up and stuff? The first time I watched it, I
- 34:44didn't know RuPaul was in it. And so there have been times in
- 34:47my life where RuPaul pops up in a place where I'm like, girl,
- 34:49what are you doing here? I'm like, how did you get in
- 34:52here? Like, I'm like looking like, did
- 34:54the was the door unlocked? How'd you make your way in?
- 34:56And I love that she just pops up into places.
- 34:59I know. It's so fun.
- 35:00Yeah, right, Coop. OK, some of my favorite.
- 35:06I just want to like go through some of my my favorite parts.
- 35:08Yeah. Kissing Jared.
- 35:12I that was literally one of my first notes that I wrote is the
- 35:17the humor in that scene, but also look rewatching it.
- 35:20I'm also I never rewatch movies really.
- 35:22That is like I thought. Thank you for doing that for.
- 35:25Me for sure. There are very few movies I have
- 35:27and actively rewatch in my life. My top three?
- 35:29Legally Blonde? Yeah.
- 35:30Mean Girls? Yeah.
- 35:31Miss Congeniality. Oh my God, the Holy Trinity.
- 35:34Yes, and those are the only ones in my life that I have
- 35:37rewatched. And even then, I'm like, I've
- 35:39rewatched a couple times. I'm just a person where I'm
- 35:41like, there's so many movies out there, right?
- 35:44I don't have the time to rewatch.
- 35:45Yeah, but I do love spoilers and like, I'll read a synopsis and
- 35:48say that I've, like watched the movie, but when I was first
- 35:52watching it, I didn't clock it. But then when I was watching it
- 35:55again, I was like, First off, hilarious.
- 35:57He is eating her face. It is so funny.
- 36:01That's the, that's the directing that we need is just absurd.
- 36:08And her just fully eyes open like staring off and then having
- 36:12these cutaways to the cheerleading.
- 36:14It was funny to watch, but I was also so thinking about my queer
- 36:19story in high school me like I'm like, OK, it's been a it's been
- 36:23a couple weeks. I got to make out with a girl,
- 36:25so the rumors don't start again, you know, and then it's like so
- 36:28sorry to all the girls I kissed in high school like that was
- 36:31evil of me. Y'all are the real ones.
- 36:34It was like AI think a fair, fair trade sometimes that like
- 36:36no one knew what they were doing, of course, so we were all
- 36:39learning together. But I've had that, I've had that
- 36:43of the like eyes open just like, oh God, when is this going to
- 36:46end? I mean, I mean, who among us has
- 36:48not been like, in any kind of hookup situation, Just being
- 36:52like, I'd rather be like watching a movie.
- 36:54Yes. Rather be watching Legally
- 36:56Blonde. I'd rather be watching Legally
- 36:57Blonde with the reruns of like my cheerleading tryouts going in
- 37:01my background as I'm like. But again, love that that
- 37:05doesn't like ring a bell in her head at all.
- 37:08Totally. Like that's not even she's.
- 37:09Just like this is what being, this is what being a girlfriend
- 37:12is. You just kind of like let your
- 37:13boyfriend just like eat your face.
- 37:15Eat your face like a dementor, like sucking your soul out of
- 37:20you. And that he also like, doesn't,
- 37:22you know, Of course he doesn't realize that she's not into it
- 37:25either because, you know. That he knows and then I loved
- 37:29how, and again this was rewatching.
- 37:31I was like, this is clocking my tea hard.
- 37:33Rewatching and seeing the her being like, oh, well, we don't
- 37:38have sex because I'm a Christian and one of the girls being like,
- 37:41that's what you say when you don't want to, when you don't
- 37:44like that, when you when you don't want to have sex with a
- 37:46guy. And I because I was also that
- 37:49kid in high school being like, I'm saving myself for a marriage
- 37:52because I was like, I don't want to hook up with a girl.
- 37:55Like it was. I knew enough of my queerness
- 37:57that I did not have that fantasy.
- 38:01Yeah. But then was also like, I was
- 38:02just watching and I was like, Oh my God, this is so much of A
- 38:06queer experience in such a, again, funny way of yes, it's
- 38:11him eating her face, but I'm also like, way.
- 38:14But that's real. It's so real because sometimes,
- 38:17you know, sometimes people can discover their queerness
- 38:21through, you know, discovering what they do like.
- 38:24But sometimes it's a process of elimination, honey.
- 38:27Sometimes it's you make out with a guy and you say I don't if
- 38:31that's really for me. Yeah, you're like or you're
- 38:34just. Like I feel neutral about that.
- 38:37Yeah, it's like when you're at a burger place and they're like,
- 38:40this is our special sauce and you haven't like.
- 38:42Like it's, it's fine. That's how you know that that's
- 38:45that's not the sauce you like and maybe you need to try a
- 38:48different one. Right.
- 38:49And you're like, this is just barbecue and ketchup mixed
- 38:51together. I'm.
- 38:53There's a secret ingredient. Yeah, I'm going to go back to my
- 38:55garlic aioli, you know? Yeah.
- 38:58Me going back to my gay porn after like trying to kiss a girl
- 39:01and being late. Just not not the same vibe.
- 39:05Just going back to that time stamp of whatever sitcom you
- 39:08were watching with your parents, with the.
- 39:10Will and Grace baby. Yeah, the most.
- 39:12Also the most tape of them. All Oh my God I know right That
- 39:15was also sorry. Looking at dog hitting
- 39:19microphones. So sorry.
- 39:22Good boy Coop, just stay down there.
- 39:24God, I love him, but he's. He's.
- 39:28Like, I'm sorry, it's getting a little bit too gay.
- 39:30I'm getting a little too self aware right now.
- 39:32He's not he's not fully out yet. I did, I did out him on the
- 39:36podcast. So you see, so just like don't
- 39:38say anything, but do let him know that you're an ally, just
- 39:42like your fraternity brothers. Literally.
- 39:44We love you guys. Big shout out to all of those
- 39:48guys. Where did you go to college?
- 39:49In North Carolina, NC State University go pack baby.
- 39:55I love it. I mean, it was a great school.
- 39:57I had a great time ups and downs.
- 39:58Raleigh is a more liberal city in North Carolina, but you are
- 40:01South of the Mason Dixon line and so it is my experience in
- 40:04North Carolina is on top of I actually grew up another layer.
- 40:11The onion is I grew up in the Middle East for middle school
- 40:16and high school. OK.
- 40:17And so I grew up in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates.
- 40:20Shout out. Oh.
- 40:21My God, shout out to all of our listeners in Dubai.
- 40:24Come to Dubai habibi, literally that's why my mom text me all
- 40:28the time because my parents are still there.
- 40:30But in Dubai queerness is literally illegal like it is not
- 40:34allowed. So we could not talk about in
- 40:35high school. So I had 0 queer education,
- 40:39representation, anything. There's lots of censorship over
- 40:42there. Wow, Tumblr porn was the the go
- 40:45to for a while. Yes, good.
- 40:47RIP. That was the goldmine.
- 40:50But yeah, so I just didn't didn't have any of that like any
- 40:54representation. So literally like watching Drag
- 40:57Race in my room from YouTube clips was like representation.
- 41:00And then when I moved to the US, learn more, North Carolina had
- 41:04people. It was still a lot of self
- 41:07learning. And I was like watching draggers
- 41:09and I'm like, I don't know who Cher is.
- 41:11I need to learn who Cher is and being like doing my gay lessons.
- 41:16And that's when. But I'm a cheerleader became one
- 41:18of those gay lessons. And I was just like, wow, yeah.
- 41:22Because I mean, obviously this movie aged incredibly well.
- 41:26So we're here. We're here in state.
- 41:28Did that age? Yeah, obviously it did.
- 41:31And honestly? Aged better, like it got better.
- 41:34Even more relevant today than it was the day that it came out.
- 41:39Came out lol. No pun intended.
- 41:42But seriously, it's one of those movies that like, it's essential
- 41:47to queer education. It's required reading, Yes, for
- 41:53the young members of the community.
- 41:54There's a reason why it's number one on half of the like, top ten
- 41:57LGBTQ movies you need to watch. Totally.
- 41:59There's a reason it beats Broke by Mountain every time.
- 42:01It's so true because guess what? It's happy and fun.
- 42:03It's happy, it's fun, and it's so like, again, watching it now
- 42:08with like a more intentional lens, I was like, this is so
- 42:13real. Yeah, this is so real, obviously
- 42:15on so many levels. But even just the the so many
- 42:18people's coming out stories of like, I didn't even really
- 42:22realize. I just kind of was attracted to
- 42:26this XYZ and didn't think about it.
- 42:29Right. Oh TBT.
- 42:34Girl, which of the characters did you feel like you resonated
- 42:37with the most? I would say Megan, yeah, it
- 42:46really was because my my coming out story was a lot.
- 42:49There's a lot of denial. Have you ever have you ever
- 42:52watched X type of college girls? I haven't watched it.
- 42:54You've got to get into it. It's phenomenal.
- 42:56Mindy Kaling's amazing love of love, her Renee Rapp
- 42:59specifically in it. She can do no wrong.
- 43:01She's awesome. So amazing.
- 43:03She plays a lesbian in it and is going through a very similar
- 43:09thing that I felt in college, which was like, I was closeted.
- 43:11So she was just using hookup apps.
- 43:13Like so much denial, so much internalized homophobia.
- 43:17But then I feel like for me, but I'm a cheerleader was my high
- 43:20school version of it of like, I can't be gay.
- 43:23I was captain of the football. Team or I'm in a frat.
- 43:27Yeah, I can't be gay. And so I don't know.
- 43:30I just, I, I don't think we get a lot of that representation.
- 43:34And I think sometimes there's queer stories that get told that
- 43:37are like the, I've been out since middle school and I love
- 43:40those folks. And that's not my, my, you know,
- 43:44story. And so for me, it's like, oh,
- 43:47this is real. Because I remember getting my
- 43:50face eaten off, being like, what's for dinner tonight?
- 43:55You know, like what I've been. Anything else?
- 43:58Literally. Literally.
- 44:00So I think, yeah, I think young Natasha Lyonne shout out my twin
- 44:05would be who I would relate most to.
- 44:07What about you? I don't know.
- 44:08I guess like it's a good question.
- 44:14I think probably her too, just because like I am sort of a, I'm
- 44:20like a fem girly and you know, of course I am a vegetarian and
- 44:25I do like Melissa Etheridge. So you know what?
- 44:28Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding. Ding tic.
- 44:30Tac. Toe bitch.
- 44:32I also was a dancer growing up, so like the dance and the
- 44:35cheerleading, you know, So you know, but I think that also just
- 44:40like her general naivete, I really like, I really resonate
- 44:46with that. I think that just in general,
- 44:48like in like growing up and like becoming a sexual person no
- 44:53matter your orientation, like I just really felt her in her
- 44:58moments where she was just like, yeah, I don't know, I'm not
- 45:00really interested in that stuff cuz she just like hadn't
- 45:03discovered what it was that she liked.
- 45:05Yeah, and and I know again from my experience was, was very
- 45:10similar to that of like, no, I think sex is not what I I don't
- 45:14want, I don't like yet I don't want to talk about I'm not into
- 45:16it because I didn't know what I did like, you know, in a, in a
- 45:20similar way. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:23I think then the the other. I'm trying to think other than
- 45:28like that on that more serious level.
- 45:30I'm like, who do I relate to in like a sillier level?
- 45:32Yeah, I'm trying. To think maybe, maybe the this
- 45:42is this is crazy. Hear me out.
- 45:44The conversion therapy lady. I'm blaking on her name, right?
- 45:47Now she's so kunty, Mary. Yes, Mary, we're going to have
- 45:50to wake Mary like I, And my harder part is, I'd love to say
- 45:54like RuPaul or Rock or like the of course the gay.
- 45:57We all want to be rock, obviously.
- 45:59I know. Who among us does not want to be
- 46:00in the object of desire? Right.
- 46:02My hot take with himbos is you can't call yourself a himbo and
- 46:06be a himbo because that level that requires a level of
- 46:08self-awareness. Oh yeah, and himbos could never.
- 46:10No, if when guys like I'm a himbo I'm like boom immediately
- 46:13you're not a himbo because that means you're too self aware.
- 46:16Exactly. So I think honestly, I just love
- 46:21that I like my drag aesthetic is very much like 40 year old MILF
- 46:26sometimes. And so I love just that like the
- 46:32the just like come on, like once you once you accept the first
- 46:36step, then it's the next way. Like it's just that camp, that
- 46:40camp. So I feel like she's my who I
- 46:42relate to in like a a different spiritual way, parallel
- 46:45universe, like alternate universe, that's who I.
- 46:48Am I feel like she's she's like your, your drag aesthetic or
- 46:55like your your maybe like your drag twin and then like, like
- 46:59you, your heart, Zach. Very much Zach versus Zacharina.
- 47:04Zacharina homophobic? Zach Oh my God.
- 47:07Yeah, So true. And you know what I love about
- 47:10Mary, too, is that she's country.
- 47:12So country. No.
- 47:13And like that's like you kind of have to love her for it.
- 47:17Even though we hate her, we also love her.
- 47:19It's the enemy you love to hate. It's the like villain you love
- 47:22to hate. She's.
- 47:23A perfect villain. I remember Phineas and Ferb
- 47:25said, and I used to quote this religiously, it was a hero as a
- 47:28hero, but everybody loves a good villain.
- 47:31So true. That is one of the things in my
- 47:34life that, like, rings in my head at all times as a hero.
- 47:37As a hero. Everybody loves a good villain.
- 47:38Yeah. She's one of those things where
- 47:40it's like, this is a villain I love to hate.
- 47:42Yeah. Her like getting the, the the
- 47:44students to go and protest the gay couple and and then it being
- 47:50like this war analogy, like, it was just so fun.
- 47:54Over the top. She was crazy.
- 47:55And I loved it. Totally.
- 47:57And you know what? No matter your sexuality, your
- 48:01orientation, your gender identity, this movie
- 48:05demonstrates like, what hetero hell heteronormativity is like,
- 48:11all of the ridiculous stuff when they're, like, taking care of
- 48:13the baby dolls and when they're, like, having sex and they're
- 48:16like, weird nude outfits as Adam and Eve, It's like
- 48:21heteronormativity. Even if you are like, you know,
- 48:24living a straight lifestyle. Yeah.
- 48:26Which, you know, we support. Anyways, We're allies here.
- 48:29In some ways, I don't know. Just don't shove it on my
- 48:33throat. OK, OK, like it's fine.
- 48:34Do what you need to do, but you know.
- 48:36I don't agree with it, not under my group.
- 48:38I mean, it's just like you're going to hell.
- 48:41But. But if you're OK with that, if
- 48:42you're. OK with it.
- 48:43You know I'm not gonna stop. You.
- 48:44I can't save every soul. It's not my job.
- 48:47It's not my, it's not my job. I have, I have other souls to
- 48:50say. There are easier souls to save.
- 48:54Than straight people than. Straight people.
- 48:57God, God, what the fuck was I even saying?
- 49:01Oh yeah, hetero. Hell, yes, yes.
- 49:05No matter what. It shows how, like, the culture
- 49:08of heteronormativity is not just like, hell.
- 49:12But it's so silly. Yeah, it's all so silly.
- 49:16The idea that and now it's core, you know, boy equals blue, girl
- 49:22equals pink and then expanding into boy have to fix car, girl
- 49:26have to clean house. Like all of that stuff where
- 49:29none of them wanted to do that. No, versus then in the gay club
- 49:34when the one kid is like that starts off of like actor,
- 49:38dancer, homosexual and like again, love gay people.
- 49:43You see him in the club breaking it down and you're like, that
- 49:46bitch does not need to be on a car.
- 49:47That bitch needs to be on the Off Broadway touring cast of
- 49:51Little Shop of Horrors. Like, my God, yes.
- 49:53That's where he's supposed to be.
- 49:55Dancer, homosexual. I love that so, so dumb, but it
- 50:00is. It is the like curse of Oh my
- 50:02God, this is this dull housey hell that that their lives could
- 50:08be in if they are forced to go down that route.
- 50:11Yeah, yeah, I hate that, hate that, but love the movie.
- 50:17But love? It.
- 50:18Love the movie? OK, So what else do we need to
- 50:21discuss about this movie and how it holds up or just anything,
- 50:24anything memorable for you, any anything that you want to make
- 50:30sure that we discuss? We talked about RuPaul, Yes,
- 50:35very important. Important, RuPaul, if you're
- 50:40listening, I know a great queen. She's sitting right next to me.
- 50:44RuPaul, famous friend of this pod, famously.
- 50:46A close friend of the pod, thank you for your ongoing support.
- 50:50It's on a burner account. That's why you can't.
- 50:52You can't find it. Yeah, totally, totally.
- 50:54But I know I think one thing that I did, I had written down
- 50:56that I thought was really funny and interesting was the root.
- 51:01Oh my God. And I think that that was
- 51:02something that I remember. And again, my, my family has,
- 51:06has done so much growth. We've all done so much growth
- 51:08together. My family is incredibly loving
- 51:10and accepting. I had my both my sisters on my
- 51:12podcast the other week. So amazing.
- 51:16I remember when I had first started coming out, people in my
- 51:22family being like, what's, what's the reason?
- 51:24Right? Like I'm trying to understand
- 51:26the the what? Happened.
- 51:28Right. And I think that's such a
- 51:30classic knee jerk reaction that happens with people.
- 51:33And I'm like, I can, I can pinpoint it.
- 51:35I watched a lot of America's Next Top Model as a kid.
- 51:37I'm like, that didn't help Let's go.
- 51:39That didn't help me become a big old fag like that.
- 51:43Definitely. I'm I'm 8 years old smizing in
- 51:46the corner like. If you know what smizing is as
- 51:49an 8 year old boy, I've got news for you.
- 51:51Yeah. Literally like there's so
- 51:54there's so many roots for me. I think that would be my my key
- 51:57one. But the fact that they were so
- 51:59hell bent on finding the roots and then the I loved Mary trying
- 52:05to figure out Megan's root. And it's like, well, you know,
- 52:09my mom or like my dad stopped working.
- 52:11So my mom was the main breadwinner.
- 52:13And Mary being like, your dad was emasculated.
- 52:16And so you saw your mother take over the role and be the man
- 52:19because your father and like the dad sitting right there being
- 52:21like, it was only nine months. Like you see him even going
- 52:25through this like thought process of like he's like, I
- 52:28don't, I don't know if it's so. That, but they're so desperate
- 52:31to find answers. They're like whatever.
- 52:32Right. They're like, I, I guess, and I
- 52:35think that happens with, again, so many queer families of it's
- 52:37like the hunting for a reason. And then you start to sit back
- 52:40and you're like, if Tyra Banks made him gay, then he was going
- 52:47to be gay all along. Like if, if that was the root,
- 52:50you know. So I think about one of them was
- 52:53I saw my mom wear pants at her wedding.
- 52:56Oh my God. That was so funny.
- 52:57Another person's This one killed me.
- 53:01I was born in France. The root of why you're gay is
- 53:05that you were born in France. That was amazing hilarity.
- 53:09Yeah, so funny because of course, I mean, you never ask a
- 53:14straight people for their root. Yeah, that's the absurdity of
- 53:18it. Exactly.
- 53:18And the absurdity? When did you know that you were
- 53:20straight? And the expectation that you're
- 53:22going to get 5 stories of like changing in the locker room or
- 53:26like this trauma or this thing, but it being these insane like
- 53:30pants at a wedding. And it's just like I was.
- 53:33Born. I was born in France.
- 53:35I was born in France. The most cursed place on Earth
- 53:38is so, so fun. So I feel like that's also a
- 53:41part that like on the surface, I feel like people could
- 53:45incorrectly view this movie and be like, it actually didn't age
- 53:48well and it's bad 2000s representation because they're
- 53:52hunting for a root with it. And I'm like, if you think that
- 53:55that's the stop reason why they had that in there, right, You're
- 54:00not like you're not understanding the movie.
- 54:02My film bro and me is coming out.
- 54:03You're. Like but you just don't get it.
- 54:05I I went to film school for three years in Brooklyn.
- 54:07Dude, you just don't get my letterbox is so good.
- 54:10Quinn George is amazing. Literally, literally Barbie
- 54:16should have won the Oscar. No, but I think it's it's like
- 54:21if that's what you're viewing, if you're seeing like the
- 54:23stereotypes, if you're seeing the like these insane bits
- 54:27making, it's not making fun of queerness.
- 54:29It's making fun of the perspective on queerness.
- 54:32Exactly. And I think that's where it's
- 54:34like it holds up and it does age well.
- 54:36And it's not a, it's not a Sex in the City.
- 54:39It's not the, the, the main diva is saying the T slur repeatedly.
- 54:44That's a whole nother conversation.
- 54:45Oh my God. But, and one could argue I I
- 54:48have such a soft spot for Sex in the City, so I excuse a lot of
- 54:51their wrongs. I know I do.
- 54:53I do. Too.
- 54:54But it's hard. It's hard but it's not that.
- 54:56It's not like a. I'm like having to swallow my
- 54:58morals and values to say that it aged well because it is just
- 55:02pure, purely aged well because it is a commentary on like,
- 55:09society's perspectives on queerness.
- 55:11Yes, and that's why it's not bad.
- 55:15It's not like problematic. And the and society's
- 55:19perspective on what is normal and normativity, how even what
- 55:24is normal is so absurd when you take a step back, it's all just
- 55:29so random and doesn't need anything.
- 55:32So what? So what are what's the big fuss
- 55:35about, you know? Exactly.
- 55:37Yeah, exactly. Doctor Zacharina, tell the
- 55:40people where you can be found. I can be found right at the
- 55:45intersection of Colfax in York, usually from 9:00 PM to about
- 55:491:00 AM. Amazing, no?
- 55:52I'm in better streets than Colfax.
- 55:53No kidding. Loving Colfax.
- 55:55There's nothing better than Colfax.
- 55:56Nothing. Not in Denver.
- 55:58Not in Denver. I can be found online at Doctor
- 56:00Zacharina. It's Dr. dot Zack.

- 56:33Mary's. I just recently got a fourth
- 56:35Friday show. Oh.
- 56:36My God, congratulations. Thank you.
- 56:38And actually very appropriate for this podcast.
- 56:41It's called as seen on TV and so we do songs and mixes and
- 56:46numbers that are TV and film. Oh.
- 56:49My God, so fun. So I did a Legally Blonde mix
- 56:51last time and a Reba mix maybe? Oh my God.
- 56:57Reba, Reba. Well, you're a Reba baby.
- 56:59I love her. Yes, I love her.
- 57:02So that's where you can find me. I'm all around town, all around
- 57:05the web. Hopefully.
- 57:06Maybe in your walls. No.
- 57:07Yeah, maybe. In your walls I.
- 57:09Don't know, only if you invite me in first like a vampire News
- 57:12for all two. You gotta invite me in.
- 57:13Yeah, exactly. Like I'll be there waiting
- 57:15outside. Yeah, but that.
- 57:17But like you have to invite me. In but I'm texting you like but
- 57:19like, do you actually want me to come through?
- 57:21Are you mad at me? Hey, like if you're mad at if
- 57:23you're a copy, you have to say. Doctor Zachary and I just love
- 57:32you. I'm so glad that you came on the
- 57:35show. Thank you for, you know, putting
- 57:38up with my dog for sharing your hot takes on But I'm a
- 57:42cheerleader. Even though what hot takes are
- 57:45there? But to say this movie aged
- 57:48perfectly and it was timeless. AB absolutely thank you for
- 57:51having me. This has been so much fun.
- 57:53I love this. Yay.
- 57:56We'll have to have you back sometime.
- 57:58Real soon. Yes, OK, bye.
- 58:00Bye.
