Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Stop Settling for Less & Own Your Worth
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily a body here bringing you another installment
- 0:22Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday. This week, I am talking about
- 0:26Speaker 1: owning your worth.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I won't lie.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Things have been really hectic for me lately, and in
- 0:32Speaker 1: the blur of what seems to be my day to day,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I seem to find myself having the same conversation over
- 0:41Speaker 1: and over with my friends, and that conversation is surrounding
- 0:46Speaker 1: value and worth. So let me give a couple of
- 0:49Speaker 1: examples of how this has come up in regular conversation.
- 0:53Speaker 1: The other day, I was talking with a girlfriend who
- 0:55Speaker 1: is changing jobs, and when she was in the contract
- 1:00Speaker 1: negotiations phase of this job shift, she knew exactly how
- 1:06Speaker 1: much money she wanted to ask for, but she also
- 1:10Speaker 1: knew the amount of money that she quote unquote should
- 1:12Speaker 1: ask for the salary that would be expected for someone
- 1:17Speaker 1: in this role. What ended up happening was that she
- 1:21Speaker 1: approached the company with the amount of money that she
- 1:24Speaker 1: wanted beyond what she quote unquote should be making, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: she was pleasantly surprised when they met her the entire
- 1:34Speaker 1: way and gave her that higher salary. Another example, I
- 1:39Speaker 1: was talking to another girlfriend who was seeing this guy
- 1:42Speaker 1: that she thought was great but she constantly articulated that
- 1:47Speaker 1: they had different love languages, and because of their different
- 1:50Speaker 1: love languages, she felt like asking for the things that
- 1:54Speaker 1: were important to her was an inconvenience to her partner.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Long pause on purpose. Basically the conversation went like this
- 2:05Speaker 1: with me and her. I said to her, so, is
- 2:08Speaker 1: your partner making you feel like you have less value
- 2:10Speaker 1: or you're not entitled to the things that make you
- 2:12Speaker 1: happy in a relationship. She started to try to defend him,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and I said, listen, I get that you care about
- 2:18Speaker 1: this person, but the right person won't make you feel
- 2:23Speaker 1: like you're asking for too much when things matter to you.
- 2:27Speaker 1: That means that you are asking the wrong person. See
- 2:31Speaker 1: where I'm going with all of this. I mean, hey,
- 2:33Speaker 1: I get it. It is so scary to put yourself
- 2:36Speaker 1: out there. But maybe if you can relate to this,
- 2:39Speaker 1: it's about time that you stop waiting around for someone
- 2:43Speaker 1: or something to give you permission to own your worth.
- 2:47Speaker 1: You have to be your own advocate, right. You have
- 2:49Speaker 1: to appreciate that you are worthy of good things. And
- 2:54Speaker 1: when you do, trust me on this one, you may
- 2:57Speaker 1: be pleasantly surprised nex time you're going after what you
- 3:02Speaker 1: want my prompt for you this week. When was the
- 3:05Speaker 1: last time you sold yourself short? And why do you
- 3:08Speaker 1: think you did that? What can you change to better
- 3:10Speaker 1: handle a similar situation the next time? Again, when was
- 3:14Speaker 1: the last time you sold yourself short? Why do you
- 3:17Speaker 1: think you did that? What can you change to better
- 3:20Speaker 1: handle a similar situation the next time? Highlights of the week.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Links to all of this goodness are in the show notes.
- 3:27Speaker 1: First up, another podcast for you to listen to called
- 3:30Speaker 1: Real Pod. I interviewed Emily Didonado last week. She is
- 3:34Speaker 1: a model. She's also like my personal style icon spoiler,
- 3:39Speaker 1: She'll be on the show soon. I was looking to
- 3:41Speaker 1: find other shows that she had been on before that
- 3:44Speaker 1: interview to learn a little bit more about her, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: that is where I found Real Pod. Real Pod is
- 3:49Speaker 1: hosted by a woman named Victoria Garrick. She is a
- 3:54Speaker 1: former Division one volleyball player and I really love that
- 3:58Speaker 1: perspective that she brings to her conversations of being an athlete.
- 4:04Speaker 1: If you want an episode to start on, I would
- 4:06Speaker 1: highly highly recommend a recent one she did with Sports
- 4:09Speaker 1: Illustrated model Tonay White. Watch Operation Varsity Blues, The College
- 4:14Speaker 1: Admission Scandal on Netflix. You know, I feel like in
- 4:19Speaker 1: recent years we've seen like a surge of documentaries that
- 4:21Speaker 1: involve reenactments, and usually they're not my thing, but I
- 4:25Speaker 1: actually really found this whole thing just so fascinating, mostly
- 4:29Speaker 1: because it just blows my mind that so many of
- 4:33Speaker 1: these well off people, like the Lori Laughlin's of the world,
- 4:36Speaker 1: like they just felt as though they could make their
- 4:39Speaker 1: own rules to get their kids to go wherever they
- 4:41Speaker 1: wanted to go for school. The documentaries made by a
- 4:44Speaker 1: director named Chris Smith. He also made one of the
- 4:47Speaker 1: popular Fire Festival documentaries, and like I said, it involves
- 4:51Speaker 1: staged recreations of what happened, but it's all with real
- 4:55Speaker 1: transcripts and then intermixed in there are interviews with people
- 5:00Speaker 1: that were really involved in the scandal and experts and
- 5:03Speaker 1: all that stuff. So definitely give it a watch. Check
- 5:08Speaker 1: out if you're in New York. It's no secret fitness
- 5:10Speaker 1: is back in New York City. Group fitness is back.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I haven't personally hopped back into a group fitness studio
- 5:16Speaker 1: just yet, but I'm just so excited for all of
- 5:20Speaker 1: these trainers and founders and studio owners that have just
- 5:23Speaker 1: been waiting and waiting and waiting for this moment. I'm
- 5:27Speaker 1: so excited to support you, and if you feel comfortable
- 5:30Speaker 1: going into the studio, they're maxing out a thirty three
- 5:32Speaker 1: percent capacity right now. I highly encourage you to go
- 5:36Speaker 1: in and support now. This week's a listener question.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Hi Emily, this is Sarah, a big fan of Hurdle.
- 5:45Speaker 2: A question I have is your morning routine is very
- 5:48Speaker 2: disciplined and has really seemed to set you up for success.
- 5:51Speaker 2: How do you get into that mindset every morning to
- 5:55Speaker 2: wake up, show up for yourself and really go through
- 5:59Speaker 2: those motions inspired way? Thanks so much, Sarah, such a
- 6:04Speaker 2: good question.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I actually recently recorded in an episode all about my
- 6:09Speaker 1: morning routine and how I get moving day after day.
- 6:13Speaker 1: But one of the biggest takeaways from that episode that
- 6:16Speaker 1: I will link to in the show notes and share
- 6:18Speaker 1: with you here is think about the after right. Think
- 6:22Speaker 1: about how giving yourself that time first thing in the
- 6:27Speaker 1: morning is going to set you up in such a
- 6:29Speaker 1: great way for the rest of your day. I know
- 6:32Speaker 1: it can be tempting to press the snooze button, but
- 6:35Speaker 1: when you keep your eye on the prize and think
- 6:38Speaker 1: about that post workout and doorphin rush, that you're going
- 6:43Speaker 1: to have. How proud you're going to feel of yourself
- 6:46Speaker 1: for getting up, for getting out and giving yourself a
- 6:48Speaker 1: little bit of extra love first thing of the day.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Trust me, that is a great motivator to get you
- 6:54Speaker 1: up and out. That is it for this week. As always,
- 6:57Speaker 1: make sure you're following along with Hurdle on social media.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's at Hurdle podcast, I'm over at Emily a Body
- 7:04Speaker 1: and make sure you're subscribed to the weekly Hurdle newsletter.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Link to do that is in the show notes. Another
- 7:10Speaker 1: hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
