- 0:00I could do something heroic for a day or two, but daily
- 0:04discipleship, that's hard. And sometimes it's these daily
- 0:08sacrifices that are the hardest to make.
- 0:11You don't have to solve all of your problems for the rest of
- 0:13your life. You just have to keep coming
- 0:15closer to Jesus Christ one day at a time.
- 0:19Holiness was never meant to be a do it yourself project.
- 0:24Because of Jesus Christ, the way in is open to all of us.
- 0:34One of the things I'd love to use as a resource for learning
- 0:36more about the scriptures is the Bible Project videos.
- 0:39And recently I was watching the Big picture overview they have
- 0:43on the book of Leviticus and they pointed out a principle I
- 0:45had never noticed before. So at the very end of the book
- 0:49of Exodus, the Tabernacle is complete.
- 0:52God's glory descends on it and fire in a cloud.
- 0:55It's the moment that Israel has been waiting for.
- 0:57God is now coming to dwell with his people.
- 1:00But then we read, Moses could not enter the tent of the
- 1:04meeting or Tabernacle because the cloud had settled on it.
- 1:08And that's how Exodus ends. The man who had talked to God on
- 1:11Sinai now can't enter the Tabernacle.
- 1:14Flip the page to Leviticus chapter 1.
- 1:16It's the same story. The Lord called to Moses and
- 1:19spoke to him from the tent. God's on the inside, but Moses
- 1:25is still on the outside. But then when we turn to the
- 1:28Book of Numbers, something has changed.
- 1:31In Numbers chapter one, verse one, we read the Lord spoke to
- 1:35Moses in the tent of meeting. So now Moses has come inside.
- 1:41Leviticus only covers a month of Israel's history, but it shows
- 1:46us the way in. It shows us how Moses went from
- 1:49outside the presence of God to inside his presence.
- 1:54And the key is holiness. As the Lord declares in
- 1:58Leviticus over and over again, He'll say I am the Lord your
- 2:01God, consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy.
- 2:07This theme appears throughout the book.
- 2:08A few chapters later we read Be holy because I, the Lord your
- 2:13God am holy. And I think this is an important
- 2:16principle for us to remember because it's easy to get lost in
- 2:20Leviticus. Lots of rules, lots of details,
- 2:23and a lot of them don't apply to us anymore.
- 2:25In fact, if we were to think about the doctrine principles
- 2:29application framework that we've discussed before, that's going
- 2:32to help us see that there's doctrines and principles that we
- 2:34can pull from Leviticus. And even though the applications
- 2:37are different for us today, the principles to apply, for
- 2:40example, if we were to look at a doctrine principle application
- 2:44framework for Leviticus, we might say that there's a
- 2:46doctrine. God is a holy divine being.
- 2:50A principle that grows out of this doctrine is I am created in
- 2:53the image of God. Therefore they need to be holy
- 2:57like God. And then within Leviticus,
- 2:59there's lots of applications that applied back.
- 3:01Then we can come up with our own applications that applied to us
- 3:05based on these same doctrines and principles.
- 3:08So today we're going to see four major themes of holiness.
- 3:13Holiness are being set apart, holiness through sacrifice,
- 3:17holiness through purity and holiness and the atonement.
- 3:21These are the ways that Leviticus is showing us how to
- 3:24come inside into the presence of God.
- 3:27Let's start with holiness through being set apart.
- 3:29You remember our good friend the Blue Letter Bible that talks
- 3:33about how we can see the original meanings of words in
- 3:36the Hebrew or the Greek. One meaning of the Hebrew word
- 3:40for Holy Kadosh is set apart. So to be holy is to be set
- 3:47apart, marked for a special purpose in belonging to God.
- 3:51We read you are to be holy to me because I the Lord am holy and I
- 3:58have set you apart from the nation's to be my own.
- 4:02From the very beginning, God has set apart His people by giving
- 4:07them specific practices to follow that make them different
- 4:11from everyone else around them. For example, consider the
- 4:14Sabbath. In Leviticus we read there are 6
- 4:17days when you may work, but the 7th day is a day of Sabbath
- 4:20rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work
- 4:24wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the Lord.
- 4:27Now most of us probably grew up either with a family culture or
- 4:31a church culture or even a national culture that honored
- 4:34the Sabbath day, that in some form recognized Sunday as being
- 4:38different than other days. But that was not the case.
- 4:42Anciently, Romans, Greeks, they didn't have the weekend like we
- 4:46have it today. In fact, many Roman and Greek
- 4:49authors commented on how unique the Jewish practice of the
- 4:53Sabbath was, and it wasn't always in a positive way.
- 4:56For example, one Roman author wrote, the 7th day was set aside
- 4:59for rest because this marked the end of their toils.
- 5:02In course of time, the seductions of idleness made them
- 5:06devote every 7th year to indolence as well.
- 5:10Now for the Israelites, the Sabbath was not about laziness.
- 5:14It was a time for worship. Forrest in the Lord.
- 5:17But can you see how this Roman author mocked what was holy for
- 5:23the Israelites? It's sort of interesting.
- 5:25And maybe that suggests to us that we shouldn't be surprised
- 5:28today if there are things that we consider to be holy but are
- 5:31mocked by society more broadly. So the Sabbath set the Jews
- 5:35apart, marked them as holy. Another thing that set them
- 5:38apart was the food that they were allowed to eat or not eat.
- 5:41Leviticus is full of food prohibitions.
- 5:44Sometimes today we might think of this as whether a food is
- 5:46kosher or not allowable to eat under Jewish law.
- 5:50For example, the pig is unclean for you.
- 5:53The Lord says in Leviticus 11, you must not eat of their meat
- 5:57or touch their carcasses. They are unclean for you.
- 6:01Archaeologists today, when they're excavating in cities in
- 6:03the Galilee region, for example, can tell if there's an area that
- 6:06was Jewish because there won't be any pig bones there, versus a
- 6:11Gentile city will have pig bones.
- 6:14So the very food that they ate marked them.
- 6:17Now it's important to realize that at different times God has
- 6:19forbidden different foods. For example, Jews could drink
- 6:24wine but not eat bacon. Latter Day Saints, it's the
- 6:27opposite. I'll let you decide who got the
- 6:29better end of the deal. Now God, with his infinite
- 6:33foreknowledge, He knows why He gives certain health laws at
- 6:37certain times. But one thing is certain, living
- 6:40these laws sets us apart and helps us become holy.
- 6:45And even though we don't live the exact same food laws that
- 6:48ancient Jews lived, I think we can learn a lot from their
- 6:51faithfulness in practicing these laws.
- 6:54For example, you remember Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and
- 6:57Abednego? When they're taking captive into
- 6:59Babylon, they refuse to eat the King's meat.
- 7:03This would have been contrary to the laws of Leviticus.
- 7:06To the people of Babylon, this looked like foolishness.
- 7:10But to Daniel, it was faithfulness.
- 7:13And we sometimes just read the story and think, oh, way to go,
- 7:15Daniel. But Can you imagine the bravery
- 7:17it would take to tell the servant of the king, hey, I'm
- 7:19not going to eat that meat? Sometimes we worry about being
- 7:24in an awkward or uncomfortable social situation with the Word
- 7:27of Wisdom. But for ancient Jews it was much
- 7:30more serious than an uncomfortable situation.
- 7:33Consider the case of Eleazar. We read about him in the Book of
- 7:37Maccabees, which is part of the Apocrypha.
- 7:39So in about the year 170 BC. This is a time of Hellenization.
- 7:44The Greek king Antiochus the 4th is forcing Jews to forget the
- 7:49Jewish law and adopt Greek practices.
- 7:53There was 1 elderly man well respected in the city.
- 7:56His name was Eleazar. And some of the King's officials
- 7:58came to him and said, you're going to eat pork or you'll die.
- 8:02Now Eleazar are so faithful, he's not going to eat the pork,
- 8:05but no one wants him to die. So some of the people in the
- 8:08city, they come to Eleazar and say, hey, don't worry, we're
- 8:11going to do a little meat switch at the last moment, we'll swap
- 8:14out the pork. We'll put in chicken.
- 8:16You can just eat the chicken and it's OK.
- 8:19What would you say if you were Eleazar?
- 8:22In Maccabees we read. Such pretense is not worthy of
- 8:25our time of life. If I ate that meat, many of the
- 8:28young might suppose that Eleazar in his 90th year had gone over
- 8:32to a foreign way of life, and through my pretense, for the
- 8:36sake of living a brief moment longer, they would be LED astray
- 8:39because of me. While I defile and disgrace my
- 8:42old age. Even if for the present I would
- 8:46avoid the punishment of mortals, yet whether I live or die, I
- 8:49will not escape the hands of the Almighty.
- 8:51Therefore, by bravely giving up my life now, I will show myself
- 8:55worthy of my old age and leave to the young a noble example of
- 8:59how to die a good death willingly and nobly for the
- 9:03revered and holy laws. When he had said this, he was
- 9:06dragged at once to the rack. Sometimes we think peer pressure
- 9:10is hard, and it is. But if I'm lucky enough to meet
- 9:15Eleazar in the next life, I don't think I'm going to go up
- 9:17to him and tell him about the challenges of peer pressure in
- 9:21the 21st century. There's so much we can learn
- 9:25from these faithful individuals who received laws from God to
- 9:29set them apart and they adhere to them no matter what.
- 9:34So we talked about the Sabbath food laws.
- 9:36Let's look at one other laws relating to dress and
- 9:39appearance. Some of these might seem strange
- 9:41to Latter Day Saints today. For example, Leviticus chapter
- 9:4419 verse 27. Do not cut the hair at the sides
- 9:48of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.
- 9:52Over time, many Orthodox Jewish people have interpreted this
- 9:56about not cutting off a certain portion of your hair.
- 9:59That's why you might have observed Orthodox Jews who have
- 10:01very long side curls. They're doing their best to
- 10:05adhere to what Leviticus 19 says.
- 10:07Now, would you keep your side curls even if it meant your life
- 10:12was in danger? Many Jews chose to do just that
- 10:15during the Nazi occupation. Even though their side curls
- 10:19clearly marked them as a target for the Nazis, they chose to be
- 10:23faithful to what they understood Leviticus to be teaching.
- 10:28Think what kind of faith it takes to stay firm in the face
- 10:33of intense pressure. Now today we don't follow these
- 10:37specific laws. How does God today call us to be
- 10:41set apart? Let's think about these same 3
- 10:43categories. Does our behavior on the Sabbath
- 10:46set us apart in a world that treats Sunday like any other
- 10:50day? Do our choices about what we eat
- 10:53and drink mark us us as disciples?
- 10:56Does our appearance reflect our covenant identity?
- 11:01So in every age God has practices to set His people
- 11:06apart. This helps us to be holy so we
- 11:10can enter into His holy presence.
- 11:14Consider this question. What's 1 gospel standard that
- 11:17you have that sets you apart and how is keeping it blessed your
- 11:22life? Another way that Leviticus
- 11:24teaches us about holiness is holiness through sacrifice.
- 11:28And we could probably have a whole course just on the
- 11:31sacrificial system of Leviticus. There's all these different
- 11:35types of sacrifice, all of which point to Jesus Christ.
- 11:40So let's look at three types of sacrifice a little more closely
- 11:44and see how they can connect us to the Savior.
- 11:47So first there's the burnt offering talked about in
- 11:50Leviticus One. This is one of the most basic
- 11:52types of sacrifice. Unlike some sacrifices where
- 11:56people could eat some of the animal after the sacrifice, the
- 11:59burnt offering is consumed entirely on the altar, so it
- 12:04symbolizes complete surrender to God.
- 12:07Before the animal was killed, the worshipper was commanded.
- 12:11You are to lay your hand on the head of the burnt offering, and
- 12:15it will be accepted on your behalf to make atonement for
- 12:20you. So picture the scene a person
- 12:23brings. A spotless animal lays a hand on
- 12:26its head and watches as the priest takes its life.
- 12:31You acknowledge this animal is dying so that I can live.
- 12:37Just as the worshipper laid a hand on the Lamb, so the Lord
- 12:42laid on Christ the iniquity of us all.
- 12:47So remember the burnt offering is completely consumed.
- 12:52We might say it like this. Jesus gave himself holy for us
- 12:58so that we might be made holy in him.
- 13:02Another sacrifice described in Leviticus is called the free
- 13:05will offering. And the good news about this one
- 13:07is it's pretty self-explanatory. Just from the title.
- 13:10You know what it's about. It's just whatever offering you
- 13:12want to give, it's not prescribed.
- 13:14It's not a certain percentage. This is just an act you give out
- 13:18of love. And that of course, points us
- 13:21directly to Jesus Christ. We sometimes say the Romans
- 13:24killed Jesus. That's sort of true.
- 13:28But at the same time, the Savior said I lay down my life for the
- 13:33sheep. No one takes it from me, but I
- 13:35lay it down of my own accord. I think there can be a huge
- 13:40shift in our sacrifices when they go from being something
- 13:43that we have to do to becoming a free will offering.
- 13:48I was talking with a young mother.
- 13:49She had three kids under 5. Some of you have been there.
- 13:53It's such a busy time, she said. I was exhausted and frustrated.
- 13:58Every day felt like one more demand, another meal to cook,
- 14:01another nose to wipe, another diaper to change.
- 14:04I began resenting how much of myself I had to give up, but
- 14:08then I remembered that I had always wanted to be a mom.
- 14:11It was my choice. When I saw it as something I
- 14:14wanted to do, everything changed.
- 14:16It's still exhausting, but now I find joy in serving my children.
- 14:21That's the power of a free will offering.
- 14:25Now, the last offering we'll talk about might be the toughest
- 14:28one of all. It's the daily offering.
- 14:31Imagine if the prophet stood up in General Conference and said,
- 14:35drop everything you're doing and move to Missouri.
- 14:38Would you go? I know you would go.
- 14:41The freeway would be packed. Everyone's heading to Missouri.
- 14:43We're so excited. But what if instead the prophet
- 14:47says in General Conference, read the scriptures every day?
- 14:52We would feel the same level of excitement and dedication.
- 14:55I think the reality is I could do something heroic for a day or
- 14:59two, but daily discipleship, that's hard.
- 15:03And ancient Israel knew about that.
- 15:06The Lord commanded, This is what you are to offer on the altar
- 15:09regularly. Each day 2 lambs a year old
- 15:14offer one in the morning and the other at twilight.
- 15:18So collectively Israel is making a daily sacrifice.
- 15:22And sometimes it's these daily sacrifices that are the hardest
- 15:26to make. But Jesus said, whoever wants to
- 15:29be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their
- 15:33cross, Ali, and follow me. For us, our daily sacrifices
- 15:38won't look like a lamb on the altar, but they might look like
- 15:41serving an aging parent day after day, or working hard in an
- 15:47important job, or making time for daily scripture study.
- 15:52Whatever our offerings might be, the daily sacrifice reminds us
- 15:59that enduring to the end comes one day at a time.
- 16:02And in some ways that's hard because you have to keep that
- 16:05momentum. But I also love what President
- 16:08Monson said. He said life by the yard is
- 16:11hard, but life by the inch is a cinch.
- 16:15You don't have to solve all of your problems for the rest of
- 16:18your life. You just have to keep coming
- 16:20closer to Jesus Christ one day at a time.
- 16:24The daily sacrifice helps us do that.
- 16:26So we've talked about 3 different types of sacrifices,
- 16:29burnt offerings, free will offerings, and the daily
- 16:33sacrifice. And I just want to give you a
- 16:35moment. Pick one of these sacrifices and
- 16:39think about how have you or how could you apply this in your
- 16:44life to increase in holiness. Let's hear some thoughts.
- 16:49I don't have a lot of money. I've never had a lot of money.
- 16:52I've been a single parent raising seven children, and so I
- 16:54wasn't able to afford to go on a mission.
- 16:58And so I put myself on a mission and I go to the temple every
- 17:02day. And I'm a convert to the church.
- 17:05So I have lots of ancestors who are not members of the Church
- 17:10and so I take their names to the temple.
- 17:14Thank you. When my oldest kids started
- 17:17going to seminary, they had seminary that was a 20 minute
- 17:20drive from our house and it was at 6:00 AM every day.
- 17:23And I started out by taking them to the church, wrapping them
- 17:26off, coming home and going back to bed.
- 17:28And I decided that they were making a sacrifice to get up and
- 17:31study their scriptures every single day that I could make a
- 17:34similar sacrifice. So instead of going back to bed,
- 17:37I used to come home and spend that same time that they were at
- 17:40seminary studying. And it just really drew me
- 17:42closer to the Lord and it really dreaming closer to my kids
- 17:45making that sacrifice every day. Beautiful, thank you.
- 17:49Now some of you might be thinking to yourself, I just
- 17:50love this discussion on holiness.
- 17:53I wish I could read a whole book about it.
- 17:55Wish granted. So there's a free e-book on this
- 17:58topic. It's called Approaching
- 18:00Holiness, so I've linked to it on the course website.
- 18:02I definitely suggest you check it out because we're only
- 18:05scratching the surface of holiness today.
- 18:08But for now, let's continue our discussion of holiness by
- 18:11looking at holiness through purity.
- 18:14Now in Leviticus, holiness wasn't just about sacrifices or
- 18:18food laws. It also reached into everyday
- 18:20life. And there were certain
- 18:21conditions that would make a person ritually unclean.
- 18:26This wasn't unclean as in like they were sinners or they
- 18:29couldn't come into the presence of God, couldn't go to heaven.
- 18:33It was more of a ritual impurity.
- 18:36One example of this would be leprosy.
- 18:39We read anyone suffering with a defiling skin disease must wear
- 18:44torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of
- 18:48their face and cry out. Unclean, unclean.
- 18:51As long as they have the disease, they remain unclean.
- 18:55They must live alone. They must live outside the camp.
- 18:59So why did the leper have to call out I'm unclean, I'm
- 19:02unclean? This is a key principle in
- 19:04Leviticus is that if anyone touches anything ceremonially
- 19:10unclean, they become unclean. So this ritual impurity is
- 19:15contagious. If you're a leper and I touch
- 19:18you, now I'm impure as well, and I'd have to go through some
- 19:22rituals to become ritually pure again.
- 19:25These laws create a painful separation.
- 19:28If you're a leper, no one wants to be around you.
- 19:31We also read when a woman has her regular flow of blood, the
- 19:35impurity of her monthly period will last seven days and anyone
- 19:40who touches her will be unclean till evening.
- 19:44Again, notice that it's contagious, and sometimes this
- 19:47could be extremely serious. Leviticus continues.
- 19:50When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time
- 19:54other than her monthly period, or has a discharge that
- 19:57continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she
- 20:02has the discharge. So for such a woman, daily life
- 20:06would be unbearable. Everything she touched would be
- 20:09unclean in their day and time. The husband could justifiably
- 20:13divorce her because she can't be.
- 20:16Touched. So Leviticus makes it very clear
- 20:19that in a sense, unholiness is contagious.
- 20:24That's why what Jesus does is so surprising.
- 20:28One day a leper approached Jesus and he said, If you are willing,
- 20:33you can make me clean. Jesus reached out his hand and
- 20:38touched the man. Now can the Savior heal a leper
- 20:42without touching him? Yes, but Jesus touches him and
- 20:47says I am willing be clean. Christ's holiness was
- 20:53contagious. It reverses the Levitical
- 20:57practice. On another occasion there was a
- 20:59woman who later Christian tradition tells us her name was
- 21:02Veronica. She'd had an issue of blood for
- 21:0612 years. Think about what that would have
- 21:10meant for her, based on the Leviticus passage we just looked
- 21:14at. To us, Leviticus is done away,
- 21:17but to her that was the law of the land where she lived.
- 21:22According to Leviticus, she was permanently unclean.
- 21:26Then she heard about Jesus. She thought, if I could just
- 21:29touch the fringe of his garments, I'll be healed.
- 21:32So she reached out, touched Christ's clothing.
- 21:36At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him.
- 21:39He turned around to the crowd and asked Who touched my
- 21:42clothes? The woman doesn't say anything
- 21:44because she's now broken every Levitical law.
- 21:47She's worried that Christ will be angry with her because now
- 21:50he's ritually impure. But the Savior didn't care about
- 21:54that. The opposite happened.
- 21:55Holiness and power flowed out of him and into her.
- 22:00And he said, daughter, your faith has healed you go in
- 22:04peace. So in the Old Testament,
- 22:06impurity was contagious, but with Jesus, holiness is
- 22:12contagious. And I want you to know, I really
- 22:14believe this. This is a true principle.
- 22:16There is nothing so unholy or so bad that Jesus cannot touch and
- 22:22heal it and bring it to holiness.
- 22:24I think we can see Jesus raising the bar in this, not lowering
- 22:29it. For example, if he were a
- 22:31teacher of a youth Sunday school class, I don't think Jesus would
- 22:34be kicking out the rowdy kids in the back.
- 22:36He'd be going to sit down and hang out with them.
- 22:39And I love all of this, but it's probably just the Pharisee in
- 22:43me. But I'm a little nervous about
- 22:45it. I'm a little nervous.
- 22:46For example, if I teach a family home evening lesson on this
- 22:49topic to my kids and we talk about how Jesus's holiness is
- 22:52contagious, and so my teenagers are like, great, I'm going to
- 22:55start hanging out with the really bad kids at school doing
- 22:58bad stuff, and I'm going to help them become more holy.
- 23:02Oh, that could be a good idea. But what if they crumble under
- 23:07pressure? I mean, that's a real concern,
- 23:10right? The apostle Paul wrote bad
- 23:12company corrupts good character. Even Peter, who swore he would
- 23:17never deny Christ, crumbles under the pressure.
- 23:20We're not as strong as Jesus Christ.
- 23:23I know His Holiness is enough, but is mine is my teenage
- 23:27child's. So I think just like with a lot
- 23:30of good gospel principles, there's a little bit of
- 23:32attention here. On the one hand, we could avoid
- 23:37unholy people in situations because unholiness is
- 23:41contagious. But on the other hand, we can be
- 23:44a light to others. We can be a force for good.
- 23:47So think about your own lives. Christ's holiness brought
- 23:51cleansing at the same time. Bad company corrupts good
- 23:54character. I love your thoughts in your
- 23:56life. How do you handle this tension?
- 23:59The first thought it came to me was my choice of entertainment,
- 24:04and I do thank the Holy Ghost. I think thank you.
- 24:07You reminded me that this is not going to go anyplace good.
- 24:11If I continue watching this movie or listening to this
- 24:15podcast or whatever, I appreciate that I'm hearing a
- 24:21voice that's helping me be more discerning about what I'm taking
- 24:28in so that the bad company won't corrupt the goodness that I'm
- 24:35trying to build inside me. Thank you.
- 24:38I love the new the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet,
- 24:41which talks about so much less. What actions should you should
- 24:45you be doing and should you not be doing?
- 24:47What are the intentions behind your actions?
- 24:49What are you hoping to accomplish with what you're
- 24:51doing there? Yeah, Amen.
- 24:54Ultimately, I don't know that there's one right answer to this
- 24:58wrestle, to this tension, but I love what Sister Wendy Watson
- 25:02Nelson said. What would a holy person do?
- 25:06Sometimes a holy person is going to reach out and touch another
- 25:10individual and bring them in, and sometimes a holy person is
- 25:13going to get out of a bad situation.
- 25:16Ultimately, it's revelation that's going to be the key.
- 25:19And I think honestly pondering the question, what would a holy
- 25:24person do? That's a question that can
- 25:27change our lives. So last, we want to focus on
- 25:31holiness and atonement. Once a year, on the holiest day
- 25:36of the year in the Jewish calendar, everything stopped.
- 25:39It's the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur.
- 25:42Even today in modern Jerusalem, which is a city of a million
- 25:46plus people, the entire city shuts down.
- 25:50All vehicles stop, traffic signals are turned off.
- 25:52It is a holy day. So what made the Day of
- 25:56Atonement so special? It's the one day in the year
- 26:02that the high priest can go into the Holy of Holies, which
- 26:07represents the presence of God. The ritual was something like
- 26:11this. There would be two goats
- 26:14selected and the high priest would cast lots to determine
- 26:17which would be sacrificed as an offering to the Lord and which
- 26:21would be the scapegoat that would be sent into the
- 26:24wilderness. We read he shall then slaughter
- 26:27the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its
- 26:30blood behind the curtain. So that's referring to taking
- 26:34the blood of the goat into the Holy of Holies and do with it
- 26:38what he did with the bull's blood.
- 26:39He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover, and in front of
- 26:43it then another goat, the scapegoat, is brought forward.
- 26:47Aaron shall lay both of his hands on the head of the live
- 26:50goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the
- 26:54Israelites, all their sins, and put them on the goat's head.
- 26:59He shall send the goat away into the wilderness.
- 27:03So you have two bulls, 1 killed for a sacrifice and the other
- 27:08set free, and then the high priest would bathe himself with
- 27:13water after the ceremony. Year after year the same thing
- 27:17happens. The blood of the goat
- 27:20representing Aaron, bringing that into the presence of God,
- 27:25metaphorically the holy of Holies and offering this
- 27:28sacrifice. The book of Hebrews, though,
- 27:31teaches a blunt truth about this sacrifice.
- 27:34It says it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take
- 27:40away sin. This whole system, this most
- 27:43holy day, was all pointing to Jesus Christ.
- 27:47Again, in Hebrews we read Christ did not enter a sanctuary made
- 27:51with human hands. That was only a copy of the true
- 27:551. He entered heaven itself.
- 27:58So the Tabernacle is a type or a shadow of heaven.
- 28:01Coming into the presence of God is symbolic in the Holy of
- 28:05Holies. But Jesus went truly into the
- 28:09presence of God. He has appeared once for all at
- 28:14the culmination of the ages, to do away with sin by the
- 28:19sacrifice of himself. It's not the sacrifice of a goat
- 28:23that atones for sins, it's the sacrifice of Christ.
- 28:26He went in not once a year, but once for all.
- 28:30We read Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of
- 28:34many, and he will appear a second time not to bear sin, but
- 28:38to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
- 28:43So can you see the contrast? The priest went in once a year.
- 28:48Christ went in once for all. Now a beautiful part of the Day
- 28:53of Atonement was it was a sacrifice for all of Israel.
- 28:57We read He, the high priest, shall make atonement for the
- 29:01most holy place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for
- 29:03the priests and all the members of the community of Israel.
- 29:08That's a pretty big group, but it's still exclusive.
- 29:12What about all the other nations?
- 29:15Jesus changes that too. In the Book of Revelation, we
- 29:18read that his sacrifice redeems people from every tribe and
- 29:23language and people and nation. Christ's atonement knows no
- 29:29boundaries, no exclusion. Now let's come back to the
- 29:33goats. So you remember the scapegoat
- 29:36that was set free. This idea of two goats coming
- 29:39before the high priest points forward to another person.
- 29:43Not the high priest, but Pilate. 2 men were brought before him.
- 29:49He had to make a choice. One would be slain for the sins
- 29:54of the people, the other would be set free.
- 29:58Even in some small details like Pilate washing his hands
- 30:01afterwards, point to the high priest who washed his hands
- 30:06after the sacrifice. In a sense, Barabbas is the
- 30:10scapegoat. He's set free because of the
- 30:14death of Jesus Christ. No, we don't often think a lot
- 30:18about the scapegoat, and we don't think a lot about
- 30:20Barabbas. But I watched a video one time
- 30:24that just deepened my understanding and appreciation
- 30:27for the Savior and what that experience might have been like
- 30:31with Christ and Barabbas before Pilate.
- 30:36So I want to share this clip with you.
- 30:37But just a little warning, it's maybe unique.
- 30:40It's a Christian pastor named Judah Smith who's going to be
- 30:43talking. He's not talking in a quiet
- 30:45sacrament meeting voice. He's got a loud preacher voice.
- 30:49So just enjoy it and think about what message from this video
- 30:55touches your heart today. We see the story of he's going
- 30:58to the cross and everything seems to kind of be hand in
- 31:01hand. And then there's there's one
- 31:03character that seems to interrupt the narrative stinks
- 31:06Barabbas. You don't even know much about
- 31:09him except that he's a murderer, leader of an insurrection, a
- 31:12rebel. And why he's even mentioned
- 31:14sometimes I'm not so sure. It's like what let's this is
- 31:18about Jesus going to the cross. So in this moment, Pilate
- 31:24thinks, I hold the destinies of these two men in my hand.
- 31:27I know the Jews have a tradition that on a holy day I will
- 31:30release one of the prisoners on death row.
- 31:33Pilate stands on this audacious stage who now presents Jesus,
- 31:39son of the living God, versus Barabbas the thug and rebel.
- 31:44He says, all right, who do you want?
- 31:48This is blasphemy. This is this has gone too far.
- 31:53There's no comparison. This is a rightful prisoner, a
- 31:57man who should be on death row. He's a rebel against Rome.
- 32:02He leads a rebellion, he murders people.
- 32:05He's a bad man. He's a thug and he's a crook.
- 32:09He deserves the chains and he deserves the crucifixion.
- 32:13Jesus, what has he done but heal, restore, deliver, set
- 32:20free. Open blind eyes, open deaf ears,
- 32:23heal the lame and the leper. What?
- 32:25What has Jesus done? Who do you want?
- 32:30What? We want?
- 32:31Barabbas. Yeah, Give us Barabbas.
- 32:39People say. Give us Barabbas.
- 32:40The Roman soldiers come up and they put the key in and they
- 32:43unlock Barabbas from his chains and shackles and he walks down
- 32:47platform, welcomed by all of his thug friends.
- 32:50Yeah, the people love me. Yeah, that's right.
- 32:52I only know who this Jesus guy is.
- 32:54But all I know is my people love me.
- 32:57There seems to be no conscience in Barabbas.
- 32:59There's no record of him turning to Jesus and saying I owe you
- 33:03everything now for you have set me free.
- 33:05No, I don't see any of that in Barabbas.
- 33:08And God knew that Jesus stood there asylum, for he knew the
- 33:14will of the Father. He said it's fine, Father let
- 33:18him have Barabbas for Jesus. Knew that the Father would have
- 33:22to treat Jesus like Barabbas so he could treat Barabbas like
- 33:26Jesus. Barabbas thought it was the
- 33:31people that set him free. No, no, no, no.
- 33:34It was the love of a heavenly Father.
- 33:40When I look at the story, I realized who Barabbas really is.
- 33:48That's me, that's you, that's us.
- 33:54For while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- 34:01God sent his Son for Barabbas, even the one He knew would walk
- 34:06away from Jesus and his free gift and never come back.
- 34:11He loves them. And the nerve, the call on the
- 34:14audacity of believers to think I got saved by grace.
- 34:18But now that I'm in this deep, dark place of bondage, I'm going
- 34:23to work hard to get myself out. What?
- 34:28That's the opposite of the gospel.
- 34:32Are you bound? Are you held under the power of
- 34:35this temptation? This seems like it's controlling
- 34:39you. What are you going to do?
- 34:42I'm going to shake myself free. Stop it.
- 34:46No, you won't. You're nomads for the powers of
- 34:51hell, and the urges of sin will not overcome it, and you will
- 34:55never overcome it. You'll just be another
- 34:58statistic. There's no answer within
- 35:00yourself. Your own marriage, your own
- 35:03goodness, your own discipline, your own devotion will not save
- 35:06your marriage and will not save your kids.
- 35:09There's only one, and he's the one that took your place.
- 35:14He's the one that stood silently on the platform with Pilot that
- 35:18said yes, let him have Barabbas take me.
- 35:23I see him. I see him walking to the post to
- 35:26be whipped as I stand a freeman. All the attention is turned now
- 35:32and I feel the love of God. Same ghost son.
- 35:35Live your life, I'll pay the price.
- 35:40When did we get off thinking that we were going to set
- 35:44ourselves free? It's still Jesus.
- 35:49It'll always be Jesus. It'll never stop being the power
- 35:53of Jesus. If his blood is sufficient for
- 35:56your salvation, His blood is sufficient to sustain you
- 35:59through every challenge and every sin and every temptation.
- 36:05Jesus is enough. Do you really believe it?
- 36:14Do you really believe that Jesus is enough?
- 36:18And as we were watching that clip together, it just came into
- 36:21my mind. This is what holiness is all
- 36:23about. I'm not going to get to holiness
- 36:27through all of my own efforts. The holiness comes through Jesus
- 36:32Christ. As Paul writes, God demonstrates
- 36:35his own love for us in this While we were still sinners,
- 36:41Christ died for us. Holiness was never meant to be a
- 36:45do it yourself project. All of the sacrifices, all of
- 36:50the rules, everything we've been seeing in Leviticus, it all
- 36:53points to Jesus Christ. And you remember that at the
- 36:57beginning of the book of Leviticus, Moses stood outside
- 37:03the tent. He can't get in, but by numbers,
- 37:07he's inside. He found a way in.
- 37:11What is the way into the presence of God?
- 37:15You know Jesus said it. I am the way, the truth and the
- 37:20life because of Jesus Christ. The way in is open to all of us.
- 37:27Because of Christ we can approach God's throne of grace
- 37:31with confidence. So I guess the question we have
- 37:34to ask ourselves is this, will we stay outside the tent or will
- 37:39we step in?
