- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Football Coaches Show on the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Yukon Sports Network.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I'm Mike chrispino Jima with us every Tuesday.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We spend an hour. We meet some of the players,
- 0:09Speaker 1: get to know where they're coming from. And uh, you know,
- 0:12Speaker 1: we're going to talk to Melo Brown here in a
- 0:13Speaker 1: few moments, coach. Uh, he came from a small school too.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I've been impressed with what your recruiting department and your
- 0:21Speaker 1: staff has done with finding guys that are you know,
- 0:25Speaker 1: not big ten transfers or other you know, power for
- 0:29Speaker 1: conference transfers. You got You've got a lot of them, right,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and that's not always going to be easy because you're
- 0:36Speaker 1: trying to project a guy up a level. Right Can
- 0:39Speaker 1: he do it here at Yukon? What he did at
- 0:41Speaker 1: Gardner Webb?
- 0:43Speaker 3: You know, kind of goes back what we're talking about
- 0:45Speaker 3: earlier about kind of the profile, you know, you know,
- 0:49Speaker 3: high weight, speed, the measurables, and then what you see
- 0:52Speaker 3: on film and and you know, fortunately you can find
- 0:56Speaker 3: enough film when you're watching just about any player in
- 0:58Speaker 3: the country of them playing against good competition, so you
- 1:02Speaker 3: can get a feel for who they are as a player.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Pretty quickly. We're not afraid.
- 1:06Speaker 3: You know, listen, there's a lot of guys that are
- 1:08Speaker 3: at smaller schools that are just damn good football players
- 1:11Speaker 3: that haven't been recognized yet, or maybe they developed a
- 1:14Speaker 3: little bit later in the recruiting process so they were
- 1:17Speaker 3: forced to go to a smaller school. You know, you
- 1:19Speaker 3: go to smaller school and you're pretty damn well coached,
- 1:22Speaker 3: because those smaller school coaches, in my opinion, are outstanding
- 1:26Speaker 3: football coaches. So fundamentally your sound. You understand what it
- 1:30Speaker 3: takes in terms of work, ethic and all the other intangibles.
- 1:34Speaker 3: And so we're not afraid to go get guys like
- 1:37Speaker 3: you said, like Devin Pringle or Mel Brown, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 3: if they fit our profile, and those guys do, and
- 1:42Speaker 3: you know, Mel's kind of like Devin. They don't say
- 1:44Speaker 3: a lot, they just work. They came highly recommended. You know,
- 1:48Speaker 3: maybe people overlooked them, maybe they developed a little bit later,
- 1:52Speaker 3: but for whatever reason, you know, they're here now and
- 1:56Speaker 3: they're being productive for us. And we've just got to
- 1:59Speaker 3: cantinue to look high and low, and near and far
- 2:03Speaker 3: and under every rock for any.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Player that can come in here and help us as
- 2:06Speaker 4: a program.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yeah, another guy that was impressive. I thought number twenty
- 2:09Speaker 1: four MJ. Flowers. He's a junior running back six one,
- 2:13Speaker 1: two twenty. That's a load right there. Two twenty came
- 2:17Speaker 1: out of Eastern Illinois. He's a Cincinnati kid, obviously football country.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I really liked what I saw from him.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I've liked everything I've seen him since day one. Number one,
- 2:28Speaker 3: he's a great kid. I mean, he's top notch. He's humble,
- 2:32Speaker 3: he's serious, he has intensity, high character. At number two,
- 2:37Speaker 3: he's a big, powerful runner with speed. He's really starting
- 2:41Speaker 3: to learn our scheme.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Well.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I thought he played well on Saturday. You're going to
- 2:45Speaker 3: see more and more of him. He's a he's a
- 2:47Speaker 3: good player.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And one other thing about you developing players too. Obviously
- 2:53Speaker 1: you got to fill a roster with talent. You got
- 2:55Speaker 1: to coach him up. You got to do everything to win.
- 2:57Speaker 1: You guys are doing that. The kid from ave On
- 3:00Speaker 1: Old Farms, Jackson Harper five catches, had a nice punt
- 3:05Speaker 1: return twenty yarder.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You know he didn't play much last year.
- 3:08Speaker 1: A little special team's action A little bit by a
- 3:11Speaker 1: little bit, kind of worked himself into the rotation. That's
- 3:15Speaker 1: got to be gratifying for the coaching staff to see
- 3:17Speaker 1: that kind of development as well.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's such a credit to Jackson. You know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: he's a really hard working kid. He's very serious, he's conscientious.
- 3:26Speaker 3: It's important to him. His teammates trust him. We have
- 3:30Speaker 3: a lot of faith in him now as a punt returner.
- 3:32Speaker 3: We don't have any problem putting him in on offense
- 3:34Speaker 3: and letting him go because he's going to make plays,
- 3:36Speaker 3: He's going to do the right thing.
- 3:37Speaker 4: He's shown toughness.
- 3:40Speaker 3: It's always fun to see players that you recruited that
- 3:43Speaker 3: have stuck it out and not transferred turned into really
- 3:46Speaker 3: good players. You know, you think about Victor, and you
- 3:48Speaker 3: think about Cam and you just mentioned Jackson, and there's
- 3:52Speaker 3: many many others that you know came in here young,
- 3:54Speaker 3: they're from this state, and they've developed themselves into really
- 3:58Speaker 3: good football players. I think that serves us well when
- 4:01Speaker 3: we recruit, and I think that it serves us well
- 4:04Speaker 3: when we go out and play on Saturdays.
- 4:06Speaker 1: We got about a minute left, coach, we have to
- 4:08Speaker 1: mention Skyler Bell. I mean, this guy one hundred and
- 4:11Speaker 1: thirty five yards and catches a career high touchdown. Two
- 4:14Speaker 1: of them in the end zone. That catch he made
- 4:19Speaker 1: man on the out on the sideline one handed, was like,
- 4:23Speaker 1: I don't know what you call that world class or something,
- 4:26Speaker 1: but when he does stuff like that, that's got to
- 4:28Speaker 1: really get the sidelines juiced up.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Everyone's excited to watch Skyler play.
- 4:34Speaker 3: You know, when he caught that little bubble on his
- 4:37Speaker 3: eighty one yard touchdown or however far that he ran.
- 4:41Speaker 3: You know, we all knew that if he made one
- 4:43Speaker 3: guy miss that he was gone. And he made one
- 4:45Speaker 3: guy miss and he was gone. The most impressive play
- 4:48Speaker 3: to me of the whole game for Skyler was the
- 4:51Speaker 3: very first play of the game when he freaking went
- 4:53Speaker 3: in there and dug out a dB on a block.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah, no one will see it.
- 4:58Speaker 3: No one will see it, you know what I mean
- 5:00Speaker 3: as you're watching the ballcarrier. But you put that play
- 5:02Speaker 3: together with the third down catch over the shoulder, and
- 5:05Speaker 3: that shows who Skyler Bell is. He's a dependable, hard nosed, tough, conscientious, caring,
- 5:11Speaker 3: team oriented player. Because the first play of the game,
- 5:14Speaker 3: I can go back and look at he goes and
- 5:15Speaker 3: blasts a guy, and you know you're not gonna get
- 5:19Speaker 3: a lot of receivers that go and sell out the
- 5:20Speaker 3: way he did, and we expect our guys to do it.
- 5:22Speaker 3: And Skyler he didn't put himself against above any of
- 5:25Speaker 3: the dirty work, and that's why he's so ill respected
- 5:27Speaker 3: on this team.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't have enough of him, that's for sure.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Guys like him.
- 5:32Speaker 1: All right, coach, we appreciate it. We're gonna see you
- 5:33Speaker 1: on the weekend against the Qus. The Orange is the
- 5:37Speaker 1: next opponent and you kind of looking to go to
- 5:39Speaker 1: and oh. Thanks to Jim Mora and Ukon Football. We
- 5:42Speaker 1: continue with more of the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Mel Brown,
- 5:46Speaker 1: Devin Pringle coming up next
