- 0:00I don't know, let's to see her. So this weekend we're having our
- 0:06annual Huskies and Heroes Military Appreciation game, and our team will be wearing our
- 0:14Huskies and Heroes logo here and then we'll have the fatigues available to staff members.
- 0:20And I think it's really special and really important that we do these types
- 0:24of things. We'll be welcoming over six hundred and fifty members of the Yukon
- 0:28Veteran Affairs to the game. We'll be having a super flag on the on
- 0:39the field for the for the national anthem. We're gonna honor two hometown heroes
- 0:43as well as what we call America's Vet Dog. And so one of those
- 0:46is Jabanese and he's a Yukon graduate. He's a Marine veteran if you retired
- 0:51Connecticut State trooper. And Justin Tomlin, who is a five year Army VET
- 0:56who toured in Afghanistan and Iraq. He's a former EMT in Connecticut and after
- 1:00his after after he served in the military, he served in law enforcement in
- 1:06both Connecticut and Texas, and so we just want to, you know,
- 1:07in advance, I just want to thank them for their service, obviously,
- 1:11and it's important that we recognize them and honor them in several different ways.
- 1:15We're gonna have a flyover weather permitting, and then we're going to swear in
- 1:19six military members with the National Guard after the first quarter break. And then
- 1:23all this is going to support charities as well, so Hope for Warriors and
- 1:27House of Heroes and Connecticuts, so two different charities there. And then there's
- 1:32a group ticket initiative with Pratt and Whitney and in collaboration with Pratt and Whitney
- 1:38with the proceeds going towards veteran's charities. So over three thousand tickets have been
- 1:42sold to that group, so we want to thank Pratt and Whitney for that.
- 1:46And then there'll be charity tables set up at the stadium before the game
- 1:52if anyone wants to make additional donations that go to two people that are serving
- 1:56our country. So so that's a good way to start start the day for
- 2:00us. This will be one heck of a challenge. The team we're facing
- 2:07is arguably the best team we've we've played since I've been here, right on
- 2:10par with Michigan last year. They've got a quarterback I thinks, you know,
- 2:15going to be a first round draft pick at some point. They've got
- 2:17an offensive line that should be up for the Morris Award, which is,
- 2:22you know, the top offensive line in college football. They're two running backs
- 2:25are outstanding. They're one of the top teams in the country running the football,
- 2:30and then they've got receivers that not only have speed and yak yards after
- 2:35cats, but they're tenacious blockers. And then on defense they're given up nine
- 2:38yards again or nine points a game. So it's just one heck of a
- 2:42challenge for us. I think it comes at a good time, coming off
- 2:46of, you know, a disappointing start, just to have a great challenge
- 2:50like this. So we're excited about it. Regarding the start of the season,
- 2:54you know, when you're rebuilding something that you know, we all know
- 3:00has has not been great for a long time. I don't think it's ever
- 3:04just a straight upward trajectory, you know, at least that's my experience in
- 3:07coaching, is that there's gonna be some you're gonna make some gains, and
- 3:09then you're gonna level off, and you might take a dip and then you
- 3:13build. Ultimately, this is a results oriented business. We're judged on wins
- 3:17and losses, and so by that variable, we're not doing enough. But
- 3:23you have to be able to look beyond the wins and losses as a coach
- 3:28and as a team and as a as a program and see if you're still
- 3:30making progress. And you do that by evaluating work ethic. And you do
- 3:37that by evaluating attitude. And you do that by evaluating commitment levels of the
- 3:45people in the program, not just players but everybody else. You do that
- 3:47by you know, how how are they practicing, are they continuing to study,
- 3:53are they going to the class, or they stand discipline, They're doing
- 3:55the things that ultimately lead to success. Because you know, the easy path
- 4:00leads nowhere, as we all know, and so this is a tough path,
- 4:02but it's also a great opportunity for us to learn. And uh,
- 4:05you know, college is about is a college in general is about, you
- 4:11know, learning and growing and facing adversity and overcoming it and handling your business.
- 4:15So it's been really tough. It's been really tough on the field.
- 4:17But you know, I've told you guys before, I'm a glass is half
- 4:19full guy. So I'm always going to try to find something positive to to
- 4:25to focus on while still not ignoring, you know, the problems at hand,
- 4:30because I'm not. I mean, I might be glass is half full,
- 4:31but I'm so sure that a lot of people think I'm an idiot,
- 4:34but I don't. You know, I try not to be an idiots.
- 4:36So, uh, yeah, it's been a it's been a rough start for
- 4:41us, but I haven't seen any dip in the way these guys practice.
- 4:46Matter of fact, today in our competitive periods, it was just I told
- 4:50them this, it was probably as good a period that we've since we've had
- 4:54since I've been here. And there's only six plays, but maybe that's an
- 4:57indicator. So, but the tech of a chal this week, I mean,
- 5:00this duke team is really really, really special. This quarterback is that
- 5:04boys. He's dynamic. You know, he runs the ball. He's run
- 5:09for over two hundred yards. He's got four touchdowns running. Uh he's throwing
- 5:13the you know, completing the ball at almost sixty eight percent clip. He's
- 5:17got great pocket presence, great pocket awareness, mechanically sound, can make every
- 5:24throw, rarely get sacked. So it's a it's a big time challenge for
- 5:28us. Those pall state loss last year, you said you saw the reaction
- 5:32to the locker gave you a good feeling. Are you still seeing that's the
- 5:36same responsive. I can't say that. I was before halftime of this week,
- 5:44and then something kind of that was missing came back, you know.
- 5:49Like I always trying to be honest with you guys, I'm not gonna like
- 5:51feed your lines and stuff. But like I and I talked to the team
- 5:56about this, I felt like, uh, we expected ourselves to be perfect,
- 6:01and when something didn't go right, we did not We we did that
- 6:08instead of continuing to fight. You know. I know we've played hard,
- 6:11and we and all those things, but there was just a there was a
- 6:14little smidgeon of something missing, you know. And it's almost like you have
- 6:20to you have to you have to forget expectations and you just have to play,
- 6:25you know, and you have to play hard and you have to work
- 6:27hard, and you have to stay upbeat. And I'm not saying that you
- 6:30ignore the negatives, but you gotta push through and you gotta learn and apply.
- 6:32And I felt like because we'd put so much expectations on ourselves, which
- 6:36I think are I don't think that there that we should have put them on
- 6:42ourselves because we have so much to prove. We we won six games,
- 6:46right, this was a program was in the gutter, and I said all
- 6:48off season we had Yeah, we're on the path, but we're a long
- 6:54ways from where we need to go right, and we still are. I
- 6:57mean, we're only we would play thirteen or sixteen games into this thing,
- 7:00you know, and we've won more games in that time than they'd won in
- 7:04what the last four years. So there's good things, but it's just been
- 7:06cloud and I feel like our players and our staff we put so much pressure
- 7:12on ourselves because we had these expectations that when things didn't go perfect, we
- 7:16we were like exasperated. And I'm including myself, you know, and that's
- 7:21you can't you can't perform when you're doing that, you know what I mean.
- 7:26And I felt like at halftime, for some reason, man like that
- 7:30went away. And I hope I'm right. I hope I'm right, you
- 7:33know, man, I hope I'm right for for those players and for the
- 7:38people that support us, and you know, the people that want to support
- 7:41us and want to see a good football team. Did you ever the game?
- 7:45I feel afterwards any better to you than to do your watching the watch
- 7:49service. Some things look better and some things looked worse, you know.
- 7:57Uh, to be very specific with you, you know, defensively, obviously
- 8:03we played better in the second half, you know, so we were more
- 8:05we were more sound in the first half. And I gotta say, it's
- 8:11like, you know, I'm like a broken record with the except four plays
- 8:13except for the you know, the long pass too long passes for touchdowns.
- 8:18Man, we're pretty damn good, you know. But those two plays were
- 8:22for one hundred and something yards and fourteen points, you know, so it
- 8:24masks the good things that you did. So it's about being consistent. So
- 8:28saw some good things. Offensively, we ran the ball better, you know,
- 8:33and we ran the ball better without really being able to throw it in
- 8:35the first half, and so that's a positive right there. So things look
- 8:39better, but I think you have to acknowledge the good things and build on
- 8:43them. But you can never ignore the things that we need to improve.
- 8:46And right now, to me, it's about consistency of execution, you know,
- 8:52consistently doing your job consistently, and if you do that, then you
- 8:56have a chance of success. And if you don't, you're playing you know,
- 9:00good athletes and good football teams, they make you pay, and that's
- 9:05happened too many times. And so as a coach, you gotta go back
- 9:07and you gotta valuate everything. You don't just pin it on the players.
- 9:09You do your job? What's that mean? You know that's too easy?
- 9:13How am I going to help you do your job? How am I going
- 9:15to put you in the right spot? So that's what you know, that's
- 9:16what we focus on all the time. Who's result about execution? Consistent execution?
- 9:22Gas of players as an execution? Execution is it? That's simple?
- 9:26It is at point at time, and then it's effort. But like,
- 9:30here's what I mean by consistency of execution? Okay, So and I'll just
- 9:33I'll relate it to the defense because that's it's just easier for me to do.
- 9:37All right. Let's say this is a this is a blocker, right,
- 9:41and I'm I'm lined up here and on the snap, I have to
- 9:43get here, right, I have to get here because there's a linebacker filling
- 9:48here. All right. Well, if I get cut off and I don't
- 9:50get there, okay, because I didn't take the right footworker I didn't rip
- 9:52through and get vertical, Okay, I didn't execute my assignment, and so
- 9:58what happens is this lineman cuts me off off my linebackers expecting me to be
- 10:01here, fits here, and all of a sudden there's a gap there.
- 10:05And it's a big game, you know what I mean. Or so that's
- 10:09actually, yeah, that's that's it's it's simple. It's not easy, but
- 10:13yeah it is. It's or like the deep ball versus are two deep coverage.
- 10:16You know, we got them to do what we thought we'd they do,
- 10:18which think we're in man, all right, turn the protection so we
- 10:22could get our defensive end on the back, and so our we got our
- 10:26defensive end on the back. He didn't beat the back, he ran past
- 10:28the quarterback. Our two defensive tackles got captured because they slid. Our left
- 10:33corner didn't get into good enough jams, so it brought our safety up.
- 10:35Our linebacker didn't run through, and they hit a deep one. You know.
- 10:39So yeah, it's like now in that play, there's like five or
- 10:41six execution errors, but it can be one that kills you, it can
- 10:46be multiple ones it gets you. So yeah, it is. But the
- 10:50thing is is you can't just go, well, it's execution. You go
- 10:52why why aren't we executing perfectly? And you're never gonna have a perfect football
- 10:58game, but why is there an inconsistency of executions? Is the way we're
- 11:01teaching it is, are we ask them to do things that they're not capable
- 11:05of? You know? Are we putting them in the best position all the
- 11:07time? Are we practicing the right things? And then when you send them
- 11:11across that white line, you gotta have confidence that you've done all those things
- 11:13and they got to go execute. But we all have to own it,
- 11:16you know, we all have to own it if it's not getting done.
- 11:18Did you follow a little job take my father, know, John McKay yoh,
- 11:22yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what I'm you know, my
- 11:24dad's a sc guy. So yeah, that was a classic. Yeah yeah
- 11:33yeah. Now I love my players. I love our players. I mean,
- 11:35I'm not like that, you know, Like you know, I was
- 11:39thinking about that on the field. You know, there's a lot of things
- 11:43I could be doing in my life, you know, right now. And
- 11:46there's a lot of things that I love to do. You know. I
- 11:48love to fly fish, and I love to ski, and I love the
- 11:50mountain bike, and I love the hike, and I love being with my
- 11:52family. And you know, I could get get another job, doing something
- 11:56else and do all those things, but there's no place I'd rather be than
- 11:58right here. We these people, you know, because it's a special place.
- 12:03And I've been in a lot of different organizations and you know, I'm
- 12:09not just blowing smoke to the people around here, but it's this is different.
- 12:13It's different here. It's special. You know. It feels to me
- 12:18like I when I was with San Francisco. We had something there now,
- 12:20we were winning, and we built something that Bill Walsh had built it,
- 12:22and you know, George Seafort had built it and Mooch and all those guys.
- 12:26But it's the same kind of I hate using the word culture all the
- 12:31time because culture is like this buzzword that everyone's used. It's the same type
- 12:35of like feeling. So that's what gives me hope, you know. And
- 12:37I get to be around these guys, I love it so mean no,
- 12:41and if I would never use the John McKay, I'm all for it.
- 12:45Now. I love these guys, man. My job is to support them,
- 12:48you know, Like I'm only doing this because well, I love coaching
- 12:52football, which means I love football players and I love coaching football players,
- 12:56and I love a challenge, and this is a hell of a challenge right
- 12:58now. On second start, are you able to adjust the offense a little
- 13:03bit more things that he does well on different different things? And how is
- 13:07that? That's? Yeah? Absolutely, you know I was asking that question
- 13:11last week, if we need to adjust the offense, and I think I
- 13:15answer is, well, we do what we do. And you know,
- 13:16they're both pretty similar in style. But after a start, and really,
- 13:20you know, my dad reminded me of this. Uh, that's the first
- 13:24full football game Takewon's played since high school, I think, you know,
- 13:30which has been like four years. And you know, it's different when you
- 13:35start a game as opposed when you come in a game late like the Georgia
- 13:37State game. You know, it's just a different vibe. We see that
- 13:39all the time. You see a guy come in and play really well,
- 13:41and then the next week when he has all the reps, you think he's
- 13:43gonna do better, and they kind of take a step back. And so
- 13:46I think we just have a better feel now for what what we need to
- 13:50do with him, you know, and we need to help him by running
- 13:52the football. We need to help him by making contested catches. If our
- 13:56receivers are having trouble getting open, then we need to get them open schematically,
- 14:01you know. And so just trying to learn and grows as we get
- 14:05to know him better. We'll we'll, we'll help us. Is there something
- 14:07you guys like to do more with with the tight ends? It doesn't seem
- 14:11like they than you love very mutch and just for somebody's you mean in the
- 14:16past game, Well, Justin's got the second most targets and I think the
- 14:22second most catches on the team after Buckman, you know, and I mean
- 14:24targets matter, no, no, I mean our you know, past concepts
- 14:33are developed usually to get someone open, but defenses are developed to take someone
- 14:37away. And in every defense there's a strength and a weakness. And you
- 14:39know, when you've got a dynamic player like Justin and we call him like
- 14:43an h back, he's not really a tight end. People focus on him.
- 14:46But you know, we threw the bottom I think ten nine or ten
- 14:48times the other day, you know, so we're still trying to get it
- 14:52to the to the guys that can make plays. And that's what you have
- 14:56to do, you know, that's what you have to do. And we'll
- 14:58keep working on it. Yeah, but I love to see the ball in
- 15:03his hands. You know, I'm I'm all for getting the ball to him.
- 15:05I'm all for it. You can talk a litle bit different attitude that
- 15:09halftime was the team were angry, they frustrated. I mean, he said,
- 15:13Okay, it's a great question because there had been a frustration, you
- 15:20know what I mean, Like the first two weeks there had been like a
- 15:24frustration, and I felt like the frustration went away. It was replaced by
- 15:28anger, and not like an like a negative anger, like an intensity,
- 15:35you know, like the frustration like everything's going wrong when one thing goes wrong,
- 15:41was replaced by a screw it. We're back in the freaking mud.
- 15:45It's time to freaking you know, just that type of mindset. Does that
- 15:48make sense? You know? And I'd like to see it carry on.
- 15:52And uh this, like I said earlier, now this Stuke team is gonna
- 15:56They're really good and I can't wait to see us go out and compete.
- 15:58You know. If we compete, you know, we'll we'll we'll see what
- 16:03happens. If you want to identified anything that you want to change, something
- 16:07that determine is not going to school to change schematically. Yeah, yeah,
- 16:11you know, every every week you do, you know, every week,
- 16:15and you know you try to tighten some things up or expand some roles.
- 16:19You know, as you learn, you know more and more about what your
- 16:22players can do and how to best use them. I think you know,
- 16:27dom to answer your question with regards to what kind of connecting to what I
- 16:32just said about receivers, if guys are struggling to get open, finding you
- 16:36know, changing some things and route structure to work to get them open,
- 16:40you know what I mean, if they're not beating up the press outside,
- 16:45then you know, getting them in position where people can't press them by moving
- 16:48them or something like that, you know, defensively, you know, I
- 16:52tend to sometimes, uh maybe try to be a little true creative, and
- 17:00I have to realize that these are college students that have class and all that,
- 17:03and you know, giving them an opportunity to play fast sometimes means simplifying
- 17:10just a little bit, you know, And so so those changes are always
- 17:14being made. And then every week, you know, as you go to
- 17:17face a new opponent, you have to make changes because they do different things
- 17:19that demand you do different things schematically. So we progress obviously use a very
- 17:26good team. You know, what does the progress look like this week's competitiveness
- 17:30and effort? Yeah, you know, in consistency, consistency of execution.
- 17:36Okay, like to me playing with with a with a with a noticeable passion,
- 17:42playing with maniacal effort, regardless of what the circumstances are, like your
- 17:48your effort can never be tied to your circumstance. If you tie your effort
- 17:52in your attitude to your circumstance, and you're destined to fail. But if
- 17:56you're if your attitude and your effort or independent of circumstances that you're in as
- 18:00a human being, I mean in any in any profession that we're in,
- 18:04then you have a chance to be successful, you know, as long as
- 18:07you hold yourself that high standard. So to me, that's that's a way
- 18:11to measure success. Now everyone else is going to measure it off the scoreboard,
- 18:15and I ultimately am too, right. But there you have to like
- 18:19Different Meal, I told you guys this last year, Different Meal said that
- 18:23he said, we have to find enough success in pursuit of it that it
- 18:27confirms that we're on the right path. You know what I mean? I
- 18:30know that's it could just be word garbage, but it meant something to me
- 18:33knowing him as I do. You know, we have to we have to
- 18:37find those victories, like you said. So that's that's kind of just the
- 18:41answers are different, different world. Well, last year, you're wonderfool,
- 18:48I know, hold yourself out of wants some games that maybe didn't look like
- 18:53we're playing in world fool. Do you have altimism altimisable you to be?
- 19:00Yes? I do. And what gives me the opposite optimism is the people
- 19:04in the building and how important it is to them and the attitude they bring
- 19:08to work every day. And when I say work, I mean practice for
- 19:11the players, work for the coaches, the way they've stuck together, and
- 19:17you know, maybe what happened at halftime a little bit in terms just to
- 19:19change in the mindset. It's you know, you brought that up. I
- 19:22brought it up to the team on Sunday at our dinner. I said,
- 19:26you know, last year, at one point we were sitting here one and
- 19:27four, and in the previous three games that we had just played, we'd
- 19:32given up one hundred and forty eight points and scored twenty four and then we
- 19:37went form one over the next five games, you know, and uh yeah,
- 19:41I reminded them of that. I said, you know, we gotta
- 19:45we gotta, we gotta, we gotta, we gotta be that gretty little,
- 19:49great little team again. You know, we gotta be that great little
- 19:52team. We can't expect anything. We gotta fight for everything. And uh,
- 19:56you know, I think I believe that that. Uh you know,
- 19:59they heard me. I believe they heard me. What impressed to coach?
- 20:03Help go? And look the job he's on these two years that they're copisgether
- 20:07through the top twenty. Well, he's done a tremendous job number one of
- 20:11recruiting through the portal and recruiting in general. Have've added some really really good
- 20:15players. He's done a great job of shoring up their their their offensive line.
- 20:19They've got a tremendous offensive line. You know, he's a defensive guy.
- 20:23I think you know, he's hired guys that are familiar with him to
- 20:26run his defense and uh, you know, they're only giving up nine points
- 20:30a game. But I think the his ability to get him very competitive very
- 20:37quickly. You know, he speaks number one to his ability to coach,
- 20:40his number in his ability to recruit both in the portal and out of the
- 20:42portal, and the transfer. The transfer portal has become so incredibly important right
- 20:47now, you know. And he's been able to track some really good players
- 20:51there and they're making an impact. I mean, he's a damn good coach.
- 20:53You know, he's got a great background. You mentioned the Victor rules
- 20:56has a backstys the running backer team speaks to that. It speak as well,
- 21:03Yeah, Vic had its more Vic in the game. It's more shoulder,
- 21:07which I didn't know until after the game. You know, his back
- 21:10was bothered, but it was more shoulder that was bothering him. You know,
- 21:14So his productivity was down a little bit because of that. We need
- 21:18to get more out of Jalen Mitchell. We need to get more out of
- 21:21Cam Edwards. You know, I told you guys during camp, I felt
- 21:23like Cam was one of the most improved guys on the team, and I
- 21:26think it's time for him to get some carries. Not having Brian certainly hurts
- 21:30our hurts our depth. You know. Uh, we we love, we
- 21:34loved having Brian here, you know, and it was really surprising to me
- 21:40that, you know, he decided that he was gonna sit and enter the
- 21:42portal because we valued him. You know, this is a you know,
- 21:48he's a little guy that you know, has been hurt a lot, but
- 21:51he had value to us. So you know, we can't we can't worry
- 21:55about that. There's a decision he made. So I think, you know,
- 21:57get more productivity out of jail, going to get more productivity out of
- 22:00Cam or giving Cam opportunities actually, because I don't think it's it's we're we're
- 22:06doing the right thing long term. If we continue to ask Demonte to carry
- 22:12the ball nineteen twenty times at his size, it's just, you know,
- 22:17it's just not gonna it's not gonna work. He's gonna he's gonna get beat
- 22:19up. And that's a tough sucker, man. He's a tough dude.
- 22:22So so we have to we have to, you know, we have to
- 22:25involve more guys. We got to force him to play and they got to
- 22:26go produce. And Victor's got to get healthy and he's got to be productive.
- 22:30And we saw him come on last season, and I think we'll see
- 22:33the same thing from him because he cares. You know, when you talk
- 22:37about improvement of the defense in the second half of what specific things where you
- 22:41seeing them to do better too? Really, honestly, two things, two
- 22:45things. Execution, okay, so you can go back to my whole little
- 22:49thing here and effort, And really that was it, you know, And
- 22:55you know, I don't know if you know, I don't know if you
- 22:56notice it, but I noticed, like after what happens after a good play,
- 23:03are guys excited and celebrating together or are they just walling around and going
- 23:08back to the line of scriptnge getting ready for the next play? And what
- 23:11it's been happening is just kind of well, and then what started happening is
- 23:15that there was some excitement after good plays, right, and some enthusiasm,
- 23:21energy and passion. To me, great defenses play without all the time,
- 23:26and we weren't playing that way in the first half. So that execution and
- 23:30the effort not creates that energy that you need to be a good defense you
- 23:36play this week? Excuse me? Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 23:41no, yeah, he's he's just he's just beat up, you know.
- 23:44Yeah, but he's not he's not injured. He's hurting, but he's
- 23:47not he's not injured. Yeah, there's a difference there, you know,
- 23:52okay, and then if you guys, if you can say something about it,
- 23:55if you want to be great, just because it's it's you know,
- 23:56Pratt and Whitney's kind of behind a lot of this, and it's you know,
- 24:00it's important to us. My dad is a marine, and you know
- 24:03we're all affected, and our military is underappreciated in my opinion. So if
- 24:07you can just mention anything, it'd be great. So appreciate it. And
- 24:10I will not be wearing this because green is not my color. So se
