- 0:21The Gillette's Cavalcade and Squarks is on the air.
- 0:51Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and hello baseball fans everywhere.
- 1:14This is Jimmy Dudley at the Polo Grounds in New York greeting you for the Gillette safety racer company.
- 1:19As the Cleveland Indians and the New York Giants get set for the opening game of the 1954 World Series.
- 1:25This is the 16th consecutive year that baseball's championship classic is being broadcast to your entertainment on the Gillette Cavalcade of sports.
- 1:32Yes, and because so many of your sports fans are also Gillette fans, we broadcast and telecast other athletic events of national interest,
- 1:39including the regular Friday night boxing bout for your entertainment the year round.
- 1:49And now fans return you over to one of baseball's all-time greats, Frankie Frisch, the Fordham Flash.
- 1:54Frankie is on deck in the clubhouse right now to give you the inside joke on the series.
- 1:58Today he interviews baseball commissioner Fort Frisch, the national and American league president Warren Giles and Will Harrods,
- 2:04along with Rhea DeRosha and Al Lefebvre. Take it away, Frankie Frisch.
- 2:08Good afternoon, fans. Well, it's a pleasure to have you on our program.
- 2:15The both managers of the two fine ball clubs, Miss Al Lopez, Al Howeyer, the Cleveland Indians and Rhea DeRosha.
- 2:21So Al, I can ask you one question. You've done a terrific job.
- 2:25When you want to be on a championship club, you've got to do a terrific job.
- 2:29What would you say is responsible for your club winning the penalty shoot? Why don't you finish sucking back in those Yankees for two or three years?
- 2:37Three years in a row, Frankie.
- 2:39How many men, three or four men, helped you win?
- 2:42The only thing I can say is that Vic Wurz, who gave us help the first base, gave us a little extra hunch.
- 2:47Our bench was tremendous. It really helped us because we had fellows like Rogan, Strickland, Habilla,
- 2:52and really top-like ball players out of the lineup for two or three weeks at a time.
- 2:56Then our extra pitchers, fellows like New Hauser and those two young boys, Don Marcy and Ray Nalesky, did a tremendous job for us.
- 3:03I think that was responsible mostly for the success that we've had this year.
- 3:07Hey Leo, that Yankees ball club, that first game out, looks pretty good. How about your club hopping up there?
- 3:12Well, Frank, they played wonderful as a team, as you well know.
- 3:16I couldn't put my finger on any one man. Alvin Dark, naturally the captain of the club, Willie Mays, were great, Matt Nellie.
- 3:22But I think it was more of a team effort as a unit that did a great job.
- 3:27Naturally, Al sitting alongside of me here, I'm hoping we can continue right on through the series.
- 3:32You know, I get a pleasure out of this because both you've got a place for me and both wonderful team men.
- 3:37Looks like a bad job, Frank.
- 3:39That's all you want. A few years back, I mean, no question a few great hands.
- 3:44Say, listen Al, Gillette, a raisin. I know you'll enjoy it. In the back of that.
- 3:48Thank you, Frank. That's a very nice raisin.
- 3:50Thank you. And Leo?
- 3:51This is my favorite too.
- 3:52Well, I say, how old is that Yankees of yours?
- 3:54He's 12, Frank.
- 3:55Look, give him one of those two. He'll be able to shave pretty soon.
- 3:58And in the back of that, I know he's going to enjoy that well series, did you like? Well series record book.
- 4:03It's got everything in it. It's a terrific book.
- 4:05And every little thing in it, you can get the closure's name in it.
- 4:08Hey, thanks kindly for being with us.
- 4:09And lots of luck with both of you.
- 4:11And take care of your health.
- 4:12Nice to see you.
- 4:15This is indeed a pleasure. I'd like to introduce you, Ben, the commissioner of baseball, Mr. Ford Fritz.
- 4:20Hi, Frank. Hi, thank you.
- 4:22And Mr. Warren Jones, the president of the National League.
- 4:25Hi, Frank.
- 4:26And Mr. Will Harridge, president of the American League.
- 4:29Nice to see you, Frank.
- 4:30Mr. Harridge, nice to see you, sir.
- 4:32And the deputy assistant secretary of defense, James Mitchell.
- 4:37He's here to make a presentation on behalf of the Armed Forces' radio services.
- 4:43Frank, Mr. Giles, Mr. Harridge, as the representative of Secretary of Defense Charles V. Wilkins,
- 4:49it's a real privilege to present these certificates of appreciation for your cooperation in making possible the broadcast of Major League Games to our service men and women overseas by the Armed Forces' radio service.
- 5:02The Armed Forces' radio service has 72 local stations all over the world.
- 5:07They broadcast in addition to sports events, the news, shows of various kinds, and you can imagine what it means to these young men and women who are representing America all over the world to be up to date in and by any Major League Baseball.
- 5:23It's a real pleasure, and I really appreciate your cooperation in making these broadcasts possible.
- 5:29Gentlemen, I'm very glad to see you here.
- 5:32Thank you, Mr. Mitchell.
- 5:33From the Department of Defense.
- 5:34Thank you, sir.
- 5:35Thank you very kindly, gentlemen.
- 5:37Mr. Pritzker, please come over and sit down with me.
- 5:40I'll flash for a few minutes.
- 5:41I'd just like to have a little chat with you.
- 5:43Yes, sir.
- 5:44Well, I'm proud of you on that one.
- 5:45And it's always a pleasure to sit with the Commissioner of Baseball.
- 5:49You've been a wonderful man.
- 5:50You were in the radio business, Mr. Pritz?
- 5:52Is that so?
- 5:53Well, that's one of the chapters in my past.
- 5:55It's a dark chapter, Frank.
- 5:56And also a newspaper man.
- 5:58Yes.
- 5:59Now, are you new to the message?
- 6:01I'm completely new to the point, yes.
- 6:03I hope we have a great series.
- 6:05I hope we don't have any umpire trouble.
- 6:07I hope it doesn't rain.
- 6:08As concerns those things, I'm not new to it.
- 6:10Well, the weather is, it's a beautiful day for a ballgame.
- 6:13Is that right?
- 6:14It's marvelous.
- 6:15It's just a day.
- 6:16And I know no pitcher can complain about pitching a ballgame today being too hot.
- 6:19Or too cold.
- 6:20Or too cold.
- 6:21Oh, indeed.
- 6:22What do you think about the attendance?
- 6:24I have a hunch, Frank, that if it's, well, however long the series goes, that for the
- 6:30number of games it goes, we will break the attendance record.
- 6:33How many, go ahead, Mr. Kuhn.
- 6:35Well, you see, we have two great parts.
- 6:37If it would only go four games, I think we would break the attendance record for four
- 6:41games.
- 6:42Or five or six, depending on how many we go.
- 6:43The seating capacity at the program is 55,000, isn't it?
- 6:47Frank, I really don't know what's right around that yet.
- 6:49And could it be?
- 6:50For a good takeout in rural series, you take out quite a few seats to take care of radio
- 6:54and newspaper men and telegraphers and that sort of thing.
- 6:57You take out probably all six or eight hundred seats.
- 7:01And oh, there was one question I wanted to ask you, Mr. Commissioner.
- 7:04How about the boy that's going to fill out the first ball today?
- 7:07It's going to be little Jimmy Berenice, I think his name is.
- 7:11And I'm awful proud to have him.
- 7:13He's the center fielder and the captain of the Little League team that won the World
- 7:17Championship.
- 7:18Oh, that's fine.
- 7:19I hope his arm's in good shape so he reaches out to that mound and does a good job.
- 7:22It's a good thing, Frank, that he's still young.
- 7:24You know, they can hook that ball up again.
- 7:26How old is he?
- 7:27Well, he can't be more than twelve.
- 7:28But the league ends at twelve, you see.
- 7:30That's right.
- 7:31And I was up to a Little League session the other day.
- 7:33Those kids do a terrific job.
- 7:35They're really wonderful.
- 7:36Now, you have no favorite in this series.
- 7:38No, sir.
- 7:39Commissioner, thanks kindly for being with us.
- 7:41Thank you very much.
- 7:42And fans, it's time to wind up our clubhouse interview this afternoon.
- 7:45And we've got to switch you now to the broadcast.
- 7:47Commissioner, thanks kindly.
- 7:49Thanks a lot, Frank.
- 7:50And our fans, this is Jimmy Gatley speaking to you again from the neutral radio booth.
- 7:55And today we're all set to bring you the first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 8:00Manigal Lopez has met with Captain Alvin Doth of the Giants and the Umpires at home plate.
- 8:05And here are the lineups for today's ball game.
- 8:07The first game in the 1954 World Series, the 51st World Series, the 14th for the Giants and the third for the Indians.

- 8:59During the regular season, he won 23 and lost only 7.
- 9:03Appearing in 36 ball games, he held 21 complete games and wound up in the men's run average of 2.69, one of the best in baseball.
- 9:12The lineup for the New York Giants.
- 9:14At first base, leading off is Waddy Lockman.
- 9:17At shortstop, Captain Alvin Doth.
- 9:20In right field, Don Mueller.

- 9:30In left field, Monty Irvin.
- 9:32At second base, Bobby Williams.
- 9:35Catching for the Giants, Wes Westrom.
- 9:38And pitching the first game for the Giants, Sal Magley.
- 9:41Winner of 14, losing only 6 during the regular season.
- 9:44This broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball, solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 9:51Any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game without the expressed consent of the Commissioner is prohibited.
- 9:59Here are the empires for this afternoon's game.
- 10:02Working back at the plate, from the National League, Varley.
- 10:06At first base, from the American League, Berry.
- 10:09At second base, from the National League, Conlon.
- 10:12And at third base, from the American League, Steven.
- 10:16The two alternate empires who will be working the foul line in the first game of the 54 World Series.
- 10:22On the left field, foul line will be one of the game's great pitchers of years gone by, Ron Warnocky.
- 10:29And on the right field, foul line from the American League, Larry Knapp.
- 10:34And the stage is all set for what promises to be one of the most thrilling World Series in the history of the game.
- 10:40First, as we said a moment ago, is the 51st World Series.
- 10:44Bob Lemon versus Sal Magley.
- 10:47Here at today's ballgame is a youngster who is getting perhaps one of the greatest thrills of all time in his life, young life.
- 10:53Jimmy Barberi, of Schenectady, the captain of the Schenectady Little Lakers, World Champions in Little League play, throughout the first baseball.
- 11:01And we'll throw it out again as we get ready to go.
- 11:04Now the Giants take the playing field, and that means that action is coming up.
- 11:07Right now, let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 11:10This is Ne2O, the radio network for all America.
- 11:14And this is WGN, your exclusive World Series station in Chicago.
- 11:26And our fans, with action about ready to get underway, the coaches are taking to the coaches' box on first and third.
- 11:32At first for the Indians will be Red Crest.
- 11:34At third base, number 44, Tony Cucinello.
- 11:37And may I take just a second of your time to say that it gives me a great thrill to be working my first World Series game.
- 11:44A great deal of pleasure to sit up here in the Ne2O radio broadcast booth.
- 11:48And now with Sal Magley taking those last two warm-up pitches,
- 11:51is with a great deal of joy and pride that I turn you over now to Ne2O's Man of Sports,
- 11:57the voice that has become familiar to millions of fans of his own.
- 12:01Big in heart, big in sports, and big in voice.
- 12:04Al Helfand.
- 12:06Well, thank you very much, Jim Dudley. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 12:09And hi, fans all around the country and all around the world this afternoon.
- 12:12We're very happy, too, to have Jim Dudley up here for his first World Series.
- 12:15And we're happy, too, to be here on Eastern Seaboard this afternoon to have such beautiful weather,
- 12:20the kind of weather you'd expect for this fall classic.
- 12:23Sal Magley has been warming up for the past about half hour, and is he on the mound right now,
- 12:26getting ready to make the first pitch here to the first down-up for Cleveland, Al Smith, 8th-rounded left fielder.
- 12:31We have a wind very strictly going in from behind left field here this afternoon,
- 12:34as great brilliant sunlight bays Kruggen's left.
- 12:37And we expect that the fly ball hitting the right and the right center field will be carried and lost away
- 12:41by the wind that is coming in right now.
- 12:43Sal Magley is taking the last of his warm-up pitches,
- 12:45and we'll set the Ne2O's Giants for you defensively now.
- 12:48On the mound, Sal Magley has won 14 ball games, has lost six this year,
- 12:51has picked one of the six 17 shutouts that have been registered by Giant Pitching.
- 12:56His battery made is a very dependable west-western, although a light hitter, a very fine receiver.
- 13:01At first base is Wally Loughman, the Carolina Comet.
- 13:04At second base, the kids from Dallas, David Williams.
- 13:07At short field, Bayou Tiger.
- 13:09And at Elvendorf, the captain of the ball club.
- 13:12At third base is Hank Thompson, a fine little left fielder, a fine little third baseman, and also a fielder.
- 13:18And now, the ball will be crossed out by Jimmy Vardetti.
- 13:22And it is being crossed out, and west-western catches it, goes over Scherzies' hands,
- 13:27congratulates him on being a fine ball player also,
- 13:29and we are getting ready for the first pitch in the 1954 World Series,
- 13:33the 51st World Series to go to the board between the American and the National League.
- 13:37Out in left field, Marty Irvin, who made the farthest flag by stealing home base in the 1951 World Series.
- 13:44In center field is Willie Mays, the play-hate kid.
- 13:46And in right field, a very dependable Don Miller.
- 13:48As Sal Magley steps up on the rubber, looks down at this right-hander hitter,
- 13:52and takes the time to west-western.
- 13:54Al Bollock behind the plate, leans down over the choller, off west-western.
- 13:57Again, a look at the first pitch.
- 13:58As Al Smith, chocking up on the horn, a little bit steps in, about three-quarters deep at the plate.
- 14:02Magley over his head, down comes the pick-up fastball, which is inside and tight off the letters for ball one.
- 14:07So the 1954 World Series, ladies and gentlemen, is on the fire.
- 14:11West-western, down in the crash again, the pump is trying to Smith's turn during late.
- 14:15He's batting a 281 on the regular safety.
- 14:18Sal Magley in no hurry, and you can't blame him.
- 14:20Goes over his head, pump kicks and throws a curve.
- 14:23Smith runs up left, the bunt takes the pitch low outside, and it's ball two.
- 14:27No balls and no strikes.
- 14:28The count on the very first hitter up here for Cleveland, bidding to win their third straight World Series.
- 14:32They've won two, as Jimmy Dudley told you, they have lost none.
- 14:35While the Giants have appeared in 13, and they have won four World Series, and have lost nine.
- 14:41Magley delivers a high fastball into the chin, that's ball three.
- 14:45No balls and no strikes.
- 14:46The count here on the Cleveland leadoff man, Al Smith, the left fielder.
- 14:49He'll be backed up by the American League batting champion, Bobby Avila.
- 14:53Time has passed for the moment, while West-western walks that ball partway back to the mound.
- 14:56Sal Magley, and the bouncer for Niagara Falls, New York, turns his bat on Al Smith.
- 15:01Lifts to the foreboard and centerfield, then turns around and places the foot up on the rubber.
- 15:04Leans forward to take his time.
- 15:06West-western again to pop him in as a target.
- 15:08Now here's the motion.
- 15:09Up over his head goes Magley, delivers that crooked-on curve and hits Al Smith right in the middle of the back.
- 15:14There we have the first hit batman.
- 15:16And Cleveland has their first runner in the 1954 World Series.
- 15:21So coming up to the plate now batting at 3.41 in the regular season, Bobby Avila, the captain's side of Air Cruise Mexico.
- 15:28Bobby Avila, who has done just about everything for these amazing Cleveland Indians this year.
- 15:34Standing deep at the plate, about three-quarters deep,
- 15:36drives up on it somewhat, hits him right-handed and holds up that way down to the mound,
- 15:39despite the fact he's not a very big guy.
- 15:41He's a fine hit-and-run man, particularly when he's on the bases, he'll play hit-and-run.
- 15:45Al Smith leads off it, puts it, locks it on the inside corner.
- 15:48Magley goes into the curve and the baby jumps back from the fast room, five-in to the waste.
- 15:52That's ball one on Bobby Avila.
- 15:54Sal Magley makes the motion. He doesn't want to throw that ball anymore.
- 15:57And the new one is gotten out of the pocket and played on by Al Bart.
- 16:00As Jimmy told you, the umpire is here this afternoon, Al Bartic of the National League, working behind the plate.
- 16:05And we have, at first, Charlie Berry, Jocko Kerman of the National League at second, Johnny Stevens at third,
- 16:12both Berry and Stevens of the American League.
- 16:14Warnocky and Knapper on the far line.
- 16:16Long Warnocky down the left-field line. He's at the National League.
- 16:18And the right-field line, we have Larry Knapp.
- 16:20Down the boat then, we have a left-hander warming up now for the New York Giants, John Middell.
- 16:25Just in case Sal Magley should be having a little trouble with his control.
- 16:29But there's one thing we can tell you, might be useful if we start shickily like this and settle down.
- 16:33The pitch that they've got will be with the fastball over her slice.
- 16:37One ball and one strike now, the count on Bobby Avila, hitting number two in the Cleveland order.
- 16:41He'll be followed by Larry Doby. Doby, who has posted 20 years with the Cleveland Indians.
- 16:47He's from the RBI leaders, their home run leaders.
- 16:50He's played a lot of fine defensive centerfield.
- 16:53But right now, we're centering our attention from Bobby Avila at the plate.
- 16:56The pitch line is a curve ball thrown on by Avila, and that's out into the right-centerfield.
- 16:59It's in there for the base hit. There goes Smith down to second base.
- 17:01He's going to hold on. No, he's not going to keep on going.
- 17:03As he'll have battled the ball, fires in quickly to third base.
- 17:07Well, we'll get the official ruling on that for you in a moment.
- 17:09It may be a hit and an error.
- 17:11We'll know in a moment as Ed McColley, Ronnie Kumiko, and Harry Jones are discussing.
- 17:15It'll be a single, the right-centerfield for Bobby Avila, and an error will be charged to John Mueller,
- 17:22the on-charging right fielder who tried to field that ball and get it in quickly.
- 17:25And the error, of course, allowing Al Smith to move around to third base.
- 17:29So there is the first error of the 1954 World Series, charged to right fielder, John Mueller.
- 17:38Well, we have runners at first and third now for the Cleveland Indians.
- 17:40Nobody out top of the first inning.
- 17:41Larry Doby, who on the regular season batted 272, is coming up.
- 17:45He's a left-hand hitter, crowds him on the plate, holds that bat way down to the knob, and bats him across.
- 17:50Into a playing double play, depth of the pitch is made to the plate.
- 17:52Doby takes the pass ball, outside and high, just about at shoulder level, 4-4-1.
- 17:57Tom Haggerty in trouble, grabs that rosin bag, he slams it down on the ground, turns around, shakes his head.
- 18:02You can just sort of feel how stale, at this particular time, I feel.
- 18:06Runners at first and third, his back is up against the wall, and he's in the World Series of 1954.
- 18:11And he knows the chips are down, and they're big, and they're blue.
- 18:14They're up here playing just about straightaway for Doby, slightly shaded around the right,
- 18:17particularly John Mueller playing a deep right center.
- 18:20Down comes the pitch pass ball.
- 18:21Doby happens to hop off, off, off the third base line.
- 18:23Hank Thompson over near the stands.
- 18:24Can he get it?
- 18:25I believe so.
- 18:26And don't make the catch for the first out, and the runner's hole.
- 18:30But Larry Doby fouls up and out.
- 18:33Now one out here in the top half of the first inning as Al Rosen comes up to the plate.
- 18:37Here's a guy who's always dangerous.
- 18:39Al Rosen's the kind of guy that will give you all the competition in the world.
- 18:44Al Rosen batting at a flat 300 for the season, has driven in 102 Cleveland runs in the regular American League race,
- 18:50and has hit 24 home runs.
- 18:52He's made that greater portion of the season with a bad hand and bad finger.
- 18:58Al Rosen coming up to the plate right now, hitting in the number four position.
- 19:04Lower born in Spartan Stoke, South Carolina, now makes his home in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 19:08Shokes up someone on the handle, the back stands deep of an overly closed stance.
- 19:12Al Smith leading down off third.
- 19:14Bobby Avila off first, second is open.
- 19:16Double play, that's on the giant infield.
- 19:18The pitch is made, Swinlow makes a high pop-up.
- 19:20He's in the first base, he's under it, waiting for it.
- 19:23He's got it.
- 19:26Al Rosen pops up and out of the first base from the Whitey Lachlan,
- 19:29and now it's going to take more than that to get the runner in from third base.
- 19:32The break, there's nothing, nothing's hard.
- 19:34The Cleveland Indians started off right away by prepping.
- 19:36Al Smith was hit by the pitch, then went down to second base on Bobby Avila's dunk single in the right center field,
- 19:43and the overcharge by right fielder Don Mueller, he tried to steal that ball before he really had it,
- 19:47tried to fire it over the third base, make sure that Al Smith didn't get there,
- 19:50but in these excitement and in his hurry, he dropped the ball, and the narrower charged against him.
- 19:55So here's McWhorst up at the plate now batting at 256.
- 19:57He's going to powerhouse guy, hits well uphand it.
- 20:00Sal drives the fastball on him, and misses with his shoulder high outside for ball one.
- 20:07Outfield stand around the right playing deep, the right side of infield deep,
- 20:10particularly David Williams in the hole between first and second.
- 20:13He's back on the rim of the outfield grass.
- 20:15Al Smith is holding the runner at the left first.
- 20:17Pitch is made, wood swing, goes around the right field.
- 20:19Don Mueller has to hurry.
- 20:21He's back, he can't get it.
- 20:22He's up against the wall in the right center field.
- 20:24In comes Smith to score.
- 20:25Bobby Avila's right behind him.
- 20:26There goes McWhorst.
- 20:27He's going to try for three.
- 20:28The relay by Williams is nutting time.
- 20:31A surprise by Victor Wirtz kicking in the third of a triple.
- 20:44He's going to triple off the right center field wall, deep back by the giant both hands.
- 20:50And there is the second hit to be given up by Sal Maggi here and runs one and two.
- 20:55And the Cleveland Indians are leading here in the top half of the first inning,
- 20:58about to score a two to nothing.
- 21:01Dave Philly coming up now.
- 21:02He's a switch hitter.
- 21:04Dave Philly batting number six in the Cleveland order.
- 21:07From Garrett's Blue Six, now lives in Parris Six.
- 21:10There's a guy that's meant an awful lot to the Cleveland Indians this year by hitting play out in right field.
- 21:14Maggi throws in the curve ball and it's high outside the ball one.
- 21:17Victor Wirtz, who was well over to the Cleveland Indians after the start of his season,
- 21:21he came to the ball of our Orioles who seems to rejuvenate Victor Wirtz and give him new life in the York, Pennsylvania boy.
- 21:26And it just paid off here in the World Series with a triple of four to one for Cleveland.
- 21:31Maggi delivers the curve ball to the plate, Philly slides in, doesn't offer, takes it high and that's ball two.
- 21:42Two to nothing, favorite Cleveland here in the top half of the first inning, two down, one on.
- 21:47Sal Maggi in trouble.
- 21:49Delivers the big curve ball, won't swing, dumps it, there's a half-mile ball to the deep right field.
- 21:53Going over to his right, getting under now, John Mueller back to the senior track.
- 21:56Or the third and final out here in the first half of the number one.
- 22:01So for the Cleveland Indians, they cash in with a pair of runs here in the top half of the first inning.
- 22:05Two runs on two base hits.
- 22:08There was one error charged to the Giants and there was one Cleveland runner left on.
- 22:13So the score at the end of the top half of the first inning is Cleveland two and the New York Giants nothing.
- 22:20But here it is fans, the 1964 World Series and to help you get the most out of every critical play in these history-making games,

- 23:05Right back at the business in hand here at the Polo Grounds of New York City
- 23:09as we move into the last half of the first inning of the first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 23:14The leadoff man for the New York Giants will be Wiley Loughlin, their spectacular first baseman.
- 23:19He'll be followed by Alvin Dark, a great competitor at shortstop and captain and field leader at the ball club.
- 23:25Then will come Don Mueller in right field.
- 23:27If anyone else is needed in the inning, the National League batting champion,
- 23:30Say Hey Willie May, in the center field and will be up there swinging lumber.
- 23:34Bob Lemon from Long Beach, California, who appeared in 36 games this year for the American League champion
- 23:41with an earned run average, as Jimmy Dudley told you, of 2.69,
- 23:45is coming out there to do the picking now for Cleveland.
- 23:47His battering mate, the very dependable Jim Hegan behind the plate,
- 23:50a first base, Victor Wirtz, who has turned the fall game upside down so far.
- 23:54With his triple, it's scored two runs for Cleveland in the top of the first.
- 23:58Bobby Adela will be at second, at shortstop George Strickland, and at third base is Al Rose.
- 24:03In the outfield, we have Smith in left, Wobin Center, and we'll get right field in a moment.
- 24:09Bobby Loughman comes up there, first pick, Bobby Adela comes in, picks up shovels over to Victor Wirtz,
- 24:13and that's all for Louty Loughman.
- 24:15So it's time for Funny Play On in the top half, the last half of the inning.
- 24:20Stay down there in front of the dugout, Leo DeRosa's walking back and forth.
- 24:24He's talking to his boys.
- 24:25He told you all of his World Series games, and would you like to know how he made out?
- 24:30Well, the fact that in the Gillette World Series record book, Leo himself says that Gillette book
- 24:34sure gives you baseball money, and it's free with the purchase of a one-piece Gillette razor
- 24:38at the regular price.
- 24:41Alvin Darn coming up there now, one out, nobody on here in the last half of the first inning.
- 24:47Alvin Darn hitting right hand, about a.293 in the regular season.
- 24:51Bob Lemon, 23-game winner for the Indians, delivers a curveball that misses inside and takes a ball once.
- 24:57The right fielder this afternoon for the Green Indian Indians, and I don't believe we got to him defensively,
- 25:00is Dave Philly.
- 25:02So except everyone for him out defensively, as Bob Lemon chewing gum out there a mile a minute,
- 25:06delivers a fastball that's low and outside to a right-hand hitter.
- 25:10Alvin starts top 50 now, and two balls and no strikes.
- 25:14One out, last half of the first.
- 25:15The Giants behind is leading the score twice in their top half of the first inning,
- 25:19so it leads to the nothing.
- 25:23So as the boys are trading, they say they lost a little time in getting to it.
- 25:26Lemon ready, delivers two and 0.
- 25:28A fast curve, snaps off low and outside, and Bob will tell you all about that finger shot.
- 25:33He's a pretty good slider, and his fastball will hop if it's working good.
- 25:39So if it's lemon, he'll be first for the Giants.
- 25:42At third is Herman Pratt.
- 25:44There's the fastball, late curve and low.
- 25:46Fastball four, and Alvin's off to 293.
- 25:48Hitter has walked here in the last half of her first inning.
- 25:50So there's the first base-one ball, given up by Bob Lemon.
- 25:53He walked only 93 during the entire year.
- 25:58John Mueller finished so high and then actually got in great for the foul, and he hit 342.
- 26:03Behind is teammate Willie Mays, who must be nice to lead with 345.
- 26:09John Mueller hitting left-handed.
- 26:10He's not a long-ball hitter, but does a lot of punching.
- 26:12He chokes up well on the handle, feet wide spread apart to stand feet to the plate.
- 26:16Infield on the left side up, expecting the bunch of pitches made to the plate.
- 26:19Low and inside, right down across the shins.
- 26:21That's ball one.
- 26:23The athlete playing standard on the right and not too deep.
- 26:25Bobby Avila in the hole at second base is playing deep, but not back as far as the rim of the outfield grass.
- 26:30Victor Walsh is leading first base and holds Alvin Goff at first base.
- 26:33Alvin has a plate lead.
- 26:35Playing a shallow third is Rose.
- 26:36He's up almost on the rim of the infield grass,
- 26:38expecting that Don Mueller might be kind of drop one down the third base line, thereby get on.
- 26:43But Mueller right now represents a tying run after play for the New York Giants.
- 26:46To the nothing table.
- 26:47Lemon is ready.
- 26:48Deliver, there's the fastball.
- 26:49Swing-out, hit-out into 18.
- 26:50It's going to be an air-ball base hit.
- 26:51Bouncing up against the wall.
- 26:52Fully plays it.
- 26:53Mueller holds it first base.
- 26:55The first comes in, Alvin Goff leads the third.
- 27:07So Bob Lemon, who gave up 228 hits in the regular American League stages,
- 27:10has given up his first World Series base.
- 27:12The owner puts him in trouble.
- 27:13That's the Giants with one down now.
- 27:15The tying run's on.
- 27:16That is the first and third.
- 27:18Back in the World Series of 1948, Bob Lemon had an in-run average of 1.65.
- 27:28Here is Willie May.
- 27:29Here's the guy that a lot of the people here this afternoon have come to see.
- 27:33Willie May is batting at 345, the National League batting champion.
- 27:37A right-hand hitter.
- 27:38He drives further past.
- 27:39Lemon drives a curve and makes a gap.
- 27:40It pops it up out into a very short center field.
- 27:42Going back for the shortstop, Sipplund.
- 27:44He's under it and makes the catch behind center.
- 27:46He's behind second and center and the runner's holdout.
- 27:49So May pops out on his first center field this afternoon to the shortstop, Sipplund.
- 27:55Hank Thompson has been a surprise for the New York Giants.
- 27:58He's defensively third base.
- 28:00He used to be a coach hitter, not exclusively, a left-hand batter.
- 28:03Hank Thompson batting a 263 on the regular season.
- 28:06He's helped to come out this year by injuries,
- 28:08but was able to be in the lineup when Leo DeRozan needed him most.
- 28:12A short battery conference between Jim Higgins and picture Bob Lemon.
- 28:16It's broken up now and Jim Higgins comes down from back behind the plate.
- 28:19We're in the last half of the first inning of the 1954 World Series.
- 28:24The Greenland Indians are leading 2-0 over the New York Giants.
- 28:27With the Giants having a time run drawn, a third, Alvin Ducks, and a first is John Miller.
- 28:32Second is open.
- 28:34Al Rosy playing a shallow third base that's off the line and just off the third base bag,
- 28:39holding Alvin Ducks' post at Pesco.
- 28:40Lemon delivers to the left-hand hitter.
- 28:42Thompson takes high and that's ball one.
- 28:44The outfielder's standing around the right and playing deep.
- 28:47Because Thompson will hit that long ball for you, particularly here at the polo ground.
- 28:50He has hit 26 home runs in the course of the regular season.
- 28:54Lemon leaning forward, takes the sign, goes to the top of the check,
- 28:57comes down, has to take fields off the curve, is low and under the knees on the inside for ball two.
- 29:04Two balls left right.
- 29:06Last half of any number one.
- 29:09A goodly crowd has come out here to see this thing.
- 29:11All that's left to say is it's going to be one of the great world series of our time.
- 29:16And well we can believe it.
- 29:18When you look down the record to the three ball clubs, they seem to be pretty evenly matched.
- 29:22And there's certainly no strangers to each other as they have played 20 of exhibition games in spring training coming over for the regular season prior to this step.
- 29:30Lemon ready now to deliver to Thompson.
- 29:32He takes a hit and he's playing, holds back and takes the pick out try for ball three.
- 29:36Lemon will go a left hand batter.
- 29:40A lot of that's a sliding step and a lot of that's a kick ball.
- 29:43The crowd is playing nothing on Thompson.
- 29:45Runners are first and third.
- 29:46Second is open.
- 29:48For a three down, he's scored three and two and they've got nothing.
- 29:51He picks up his uniform.
- 29:52A fastball to Thompson is called through one of the letters for the first called stretch.
- 29:56Three and one.
- 29:58The count on third baseman Henry Thompson.
- 30:01Thompson leveled that bat off as he stands deep in the plate.
- 30:06He's wide spread apart.
- 30:08Coming ready, he goes back to living fastball.
- 30:10Turn and it's first straight.
- 30:12A top goal is after that one.
- 30:14That one just counts for three and two.
- 30:16Here's the ball who first saw the light of day in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
- 30:20Now makes his home in New York City.
- 30:23First came up with an opportunity in the majors with the Finchers Brown.
- 30:28Then in the American League.
- 30:31Now it's time to take time between Jackson and the slow roller.
- 30:34Back to first base.
- 30:35That's where the victory works.
- 30:36That's on first and the unison.
- 30:38That's all here in the last half of the first inning for the Giants.
- 30:41They can't even get no farther than that.
- 30:43No runs.
- 30:44There was one base hit.
- 30:50He went on and the winner seems in error.
- 30:53Well, the end of the first inning, the remainder of the game have been leading by the three runs.
- 30:59And Al Rosie playing down there at third base certainly has been a ball work on this ball club for the Cleveland Indians.
- 31:07His fighting spirit has meant an awful lot.
- 31:09And Al Rosie wound up the three.
- 31:11He's like the one of the girls who have an even three hundred batting average to strike the injuries he too has.
- 31:16He's a mighty solid ball player, everybody.
- 31:18One of the best 50 guys you see anywhere in one of the nights.
- 31:21You can take it for real when he says from time to time I've had a lot of raises.
- 31:26So I'm talking from experience when I say the one piece to that is the only way to come through on the two most important counts.
- 31:34The girls look good and they see a girl.
- 31:36Now that's for my words.
- 31:38Now don't you think you're the one piece to that, Rosie?
- 31:44It's the second inning here at the fellow Giants in New York City.
- 31:48The Cleveland Indians leading 2-0.
- 31:51And coming up now is the 50-tide of New Orleans, Louisiana.
- 31:53George Cricket, the very fine, clearly caked up.
- 31:56Little like the four, he's batting a 2-13 on the regular season.
- 31:59But George was out for about six weeks with a broken draw.
- 32:02Of course, they could have raised his batting average, had he played during that time, or couldn't have lowered it with all the things on the face of baseball.
- 32:09The George Cricket toss from the right-hand hitter.
- 32:12I certainly passed up that into the Cleveland this year.
- 32:15I might have made the first pitch to him and fired the fastball outside and half a ball one.
- 32:19George Cricket has driven in 37 runs over the period of regular season and hit six home runs in a row at the
- 32:20Cripple season four and stuff in having done out with that broken draw.
- 32:30A curve ball to Cricket is taken and it's over to Neesford called Trepp.
- 32:34One ball and one strike.
- 32:37Cleveland having scored two runs in the top half of the first inning.
- 32:42The ball leading in the ball game by that mountain.
- 32:45Moving up a little bit of a down.
- 32:48Now they do this again, they've got a put it on curve ball,
- 32:50just been trying to bounce it back to the screen.
- 32:54The hit part moves to one ball and two strikes.
- 32:57It's the last third of the Cleveland batting order here in the top half of the second inning.
- 33:01Cricket's going to be followed by Higgin and then by that good hitter, hitter Bob Lemon.
- 33:06Cricket taking back and forth and the step to the dugout.
- 33:12Early ball, pretty ball, it's like a kid going down there.
- 33:16Sal Magley, traveling down the path, not a particularly good game.
- 33:19Fires away one and two, the curve ball, coming in the next quick-play three.
- 33:22That is a quick strikeout of the 1954 World Series.
- 33:26It's set up by Sal Magley.
- 33:30Back in the 1948 World Series, Jim Higgin hit 211.
- 33:35He found that record of Jim Higgins in the Genet World Series
- 33:37after the book.
- 33:40Well, that's a handbook to have around.
- 33:42You get a lot of kick out of it, I know.
- 33:44Jim Higgins on the regular season this year hit 234.
- 33:46So he's turning in right now.
- 33:48Sal Magley, ready to go.
- 33:51He's gotten one man here in the top half.
- 33:55On the second inning, he's got the match.
- 33:57Celebrities, a curve. Jim Higgins is slowing out shot.
- 34:00One ball, no strikes.
- 34:02That's a concern.
- 34:05By the very quickly World Series play, you can find that in the Genet World Series
- 34:10record book.
- 34:11But a lot of fast, he figures, information.
- 34:13Magley's fast ball is swung under.
- 34:14Higgins popped up right back at the man.
- 34:16Coming in fast for the third base from Thompson.
- 34:18Under, lifts up into the front, and then makes a pass.
- 34:20So that's all for Higgins.
- 34:22The three out front, the clock is ticking in.
- 34:25Bob Lemon coming up for the plate.
- 34:39Bob Lemon moving in.
- 34:41Bob has been left handed.
- 34:43Right to back, he's a right-hand faker.
- 34:45He's been used on many occasions at Cleveland, all the time.
- 34:47Magley tries to curve on him, and this is with it high on outside the ball on.
- 34:54Red crest on the high on first base, closing over to Cleveland.
- 34:56In through the home.
- 34:58Once Bob to get on.
- 35:00Down comes the picker, and there's that curve ball by Magley Mow.
- 35:04That's all he is.
- 35:06Time counts, he's playing shallow at third.
- 35:08Right side of the infield playing great deep.
- 35:10As David Williams is wounded back on the grass in right field.
- 35:14Now he comes up to play on the rim of the grass.
- 35:16Lock him playing back just about as deep.
- 35:19Hold close to the line.
- 35:20Hits Lemon, a short throw, the 10 right and curve over first ball step.
- 35:26Two balls, one strike on Bob Lemon.
- 35:28The wall of number 21, standing at the plate right now.
- 35:32Down Magley.
- 35:34Left foot forward, leaves forward from the line, takes his time from Westing.
- 35:38Humps, hits and throws.
- 35:39Another curve ball, it's been thrown on by Lemon and beaten down into the ground foul.
- 35:44Two balls, three strikes on Bob Lemon.
- 35:46Two down, nobody on top of the second inning.
- 35:48The Cleveland Indians have in front, hitting nothing.
- 35:50They sit in the middle of the plate, they score their two runs in the top half of the pretty city.
- 35:54One after Smith with hit by a fifth ball, and a deal is singled in around the second.
- 35:57A bottle in the outfield allowed their fifth to keep on going amidst the third.
- 36:01Hit works triple in the right finish driving the third.
- 36:04Now the fifth to play to Lemon to fastball, it misses ice drive for ball three.
- 36:08Three balls and two strikes to count on Bob Lemon.
- 36:11Bob turns around, says something to Westing, to both games.
- 36:14Al Barley, the national league, the national league is the play down foul here.
- 36:18And it's in, he's in down over the corner, Westing to take the lick of the next pick.
- 36:23In it comes, high on ice drive to ball four.
- 36:26So there's the first base on balls given up by Magley.
- 36:30They walk 70 over the course of the regular season.
- 36:33Bob Lemon, the guy he wanted to get it off by the walk.
- 36:36And now the leadoffer, Smith comes up to the plate.
- 36:38It is who is pushed in the middle of the back by a picked ball in the first inning.
- 36:41So they set Magley off to a wobbly start.
- 36:44But all number 35 down there usually won three times and he's been doing it so far.
- 36:50Gets him here in the second inning, he's shut out.
- 36:52He's been dropped out, he's good base for Hatton.
- 36:55Lemon is now on the first base having been locked.
- 36:57And here is Smith, the kick hitter, coming in.
- 37:00This guy's really cleared up that ball for the first pitch.
- 37:03Magley tries his curve and misses with a low and just outside.
- 37:07Remember all those strikes.
- 37:09Back to the second inning.
- 37:11First game of the 1964 World Series.
- 37:14From the Polar Ground to New York City.
- 37:16We'll be back right here again tomorrow for the playing of the second one.
- 37:19Magley, seven, all the time.
- 37:22Flips over first base, watch as Lemon takes his lead.
- 37:24Now he's ready.
- 37:25Lemon's afraid of curve and just takes a nice and clear about the race first base.
- 37:30One ball, one strike.
- 37:35Williams has cleared a couple of steps over closer to second.
- 37:39He's playing rather deep behind Smith.
- 37:41He's playing just about straight away to Smith.
- 37:43He can hit the long ball for you.
- 37:45He's found an 11 home run over to Peaty.
- 37:47Magley settles down, delivers to him.
- 37:49Another hand curve, but misses just outside and low.
- 37:52Good ball, one strike.
- 38:00Six men in blue, watching the progress of this ball game.
- 38:05Every one of them a fine empire.
- 38:07We've seen them work many times over the course of the year.
- 38:09Magley ready.
- 38:10Fives, six, the big one on there.
- 38:12There's a bounding ball, hits far left of third base on.
- 38:15Fits right over near the crowd right past the third base post.
- 38:18Tony Peaty, you know.
- 38:19Here's a fine ball player in his day two, that's Peaty Mello.
- 38:23That's on drive two.
- 38:25And then there's Fred Kress, one of the two fellows that really helped.
- 38:30Fred Kress is a leading coach at First State.
- 38:33This is where he was playing golf after Fred Kress.
- 38:35He was here at the grounds, I remember, in 1945 at the post.
- 38:38Now they keep him delivered by Magley.
- 38:40Down comes that hit, press ball, come on, hits far left back to three.
- 38:44That's going up on top of the press section.
- 38:46And it's loaded here this afternoon.
- 38:48There's a lot of people covering this ball game this afternoon.
- 38:50You can take a look at.
- 38:52I think you'll be very happy to know that the ball game is going around the world.
- 38:57All over the world.
- 38:59Almost every available radio station is hooked in this afternoon to give up complicated sports projects.
- 39:07Now Magley's ready.
- 39:08Here's a two-two delivery.
- 39:10Another hand curve is going outside mid-football three.
- 39:15One of the big factors in telling this ball game around the world, of course,
- 39:18has been the armed forces radio station.
- 39:20Now they've hooked on with it again today.
- 39:22There's going to be some activity down in the down both ends.
- 39:25Down the middle is going to get up again, except tomorrow.
- 39:29Down the middle, left-hander.
- 39:31Now the three people to play.
- 39:33Winner of the round, Pinnacle State, please.
- 39:35Go got him on a low-football, just about to leave.
- 39:39Right up, something's stuck out here.
- 39:41As far as Magley's concerned, in here, in the second inning, no runs,
- 39:44nobody's hooked to play them.
- 39:46Lemon is locked, he's left at first.
- 39:48No runs, no hooks, no balls.
- 39:51One man left out.
- 39:53And the plan of women happening to play this ball is to give them to Winner of the Round,
- 39:57Nathan.
- 39:59Look, Pinnacle State, he's got you.
- 40:03He's got you.
- 40:08He's got you.
- 40:09He's got you.
- 40:10He's got you.
- 40:11He's got you.
- 40:12He's got you.
- 40:13He's got you.
- 40:14He's got you.
- 40:15He's got you.
- 40:16He's got you.
- 40:17He's got you.
- 40:18He's got you.
- 40:19He's got you.
- 40:20He's got you, he's got you.
- 40:21He's got you, he's got you.
- 40:22He's got you.
- 40:23He's got you.
- 40:24He's got you, he's got you.
- 40:25He's got you.
- 40:26We're at plant.
- 40:27I saw him going up all the way.
- 40:28I shot a drive and did some hard work, so I reached through两 Adamett and joyous
- 40:29敢 to spend ten days.
- 40:30Or a good drive, I'm all set.
- 40:31We were fevered and worried because that young Party folks back in the posts the
- 40:44Army Everybody.
- 40:45So victory.
- 40:46Remember friends, right now you'll get the Fast Food Dress World Food Dress of Dress 3 when you buy a Deluxe Food Refrigerator Set at the rate of the price $1.
- 41:00Here in the last half of the session, we'll leave it in the New York Jazz as they come to bat. We'll have Maddie Irvin followed by Baby Williams and then by Worscliffe from the Chateau.
- 41:08Maddie Irvin, value of $263.
- 41:11In 1951, Maddie Irvin hit $458. He's up about 24 times, had 11 base hits and now 51 to $203. He's set a star at $203 and the Fast Food Uncle has certainly charged him considerable amount of credit.
- 41:25The first set down is over $15.
- 41:28Bob Lemon, working for him, is value of $252. Next set, swing around, hit off the end of the bat foul, rolling back into the ground, does that.
- 41:35So, quickly now, the crowd-honed hitter has a counter-strike too.
- 41:38There are two sets down, Maddie Irvin, to be followed by Baby Williams.
- 41:44And you'll have Worscliffe. Bob Lemon, with a 2-1 lead to go on, takes his time from Jim Higgins.
- 41:50Bob's real time just about 30-0.
- 41:52The feeling, I think, is very deep.
- 41:54Good call, they're high, up above the three-to-the-top, and just away from Higgins, bounces all the way back to the two.
- 41:59That's nobody on base to stop at that. So that'll go as far as one.
- 42:08Number two set.
- 42:10Excuse me, ladies, in the first game of the World Series, 3-0, having scored twice in the top of the first.
- 42:17Lemon, munching around with a 2-2 tap, nice chance to take the chance for Higgins.
- 42:27Bob's really good at it, because he's not as heavy.
- 42:30Maddie Irvin, with that bodyweight, moves up further.
- 42:32Here comes a quick, Irvin swings around it, and sends a bounding ball off the third base line foul.
- 42:36He's serving at the stand.
- 42:39Third base line foul, it's going to be a two-win for the United League, and they'll go with a two-win.
- 42:42The United League will go with a three-win, because they're going to be led on in behind their base.
- 42:47Unfortunately, Bob goes to the mound of Bob Lemon.
- 42:59Now, the set. Bob Lemon, one try, before they tell the game, kicks and throws a fastball.
- 43:04Irvin, moving in the middle of the fastball, bounces head-butt to take the spin-high for ball two.
- 43:08New ball, he takes from Maddie Irvin, first throw it up in the last half of the second hitter.
- 43:17Take that lead in fast.
- 43:19That's a steady touch, and there he goes, and he gets ready.
- 43:22Ties the way through and a third ball, thrown on and a punch foul off the left of the plate.
- 43:26So, Jim Higgins is going to be able to feel this one out.
- 43:29He doesn't, and he's got it.
- 43:31Well, Maddie Irvin's out of there.
- 43:33We have the first foul, the foul out for Jim Higgins, and Williams is coming on.
- 43:36Now, before Williams steps up there with his fastball, I think he's facing a benefit for him.
- 43:41This is New Troll, the radio network for all America.
- 43:45WDN Chicago, the Chicago Tribune station.
- 43:49Now, baby Williams, who are on the regular season, batter 2-22.
- 43:53Right hand here takes the fastball, forward throw by Lemmonford, called strike.
- 43:56Gets right off the belt buckle on the inside plate.
- 43:59This is the guy the Tribune Indians had a hell of a lot of trouble getting out of the spring exhibition.
- 44:04That's a good one, that's a good one.
- 44:06That's a good one.
- 44:08That's a good one.
- 44:10That's a good one.
- 44:12That's a good one.
- 44:14That's a good one.
- 44:16The Tribune Indians had a hell of a lot of trouble getting out of the spring exhibition game.
- 44:20You like the way the Tribune's picking up.
- 44:22Hicks on the come on, there's a bounding ball, Hicks a third, Rosen on one half,
- 44:25is up with a close first base of it, working time, and baby Williams is out number 2.
- 44:30So, as we said, the first 5-3 roundout, if you're scoring with the fastball from the room.
- 44:35What's this room?
- 44:36A 187 header over the far side of the way, but it seems he is coming on to face the 23-game winner, Bob Lemmon.
- 44:43Bob, as Jim Dudley told you, he won 23 ball games and lost 7.
- 44:47The 12 shutouts, the Tribune Indians back from this year, Bob Lemmon, a count of the three of them.
- 44:54Bob out there on the mound right now, ready to pick the worst of.
- 44:57The worst of is powerful hitters, big set of race.
- 45:01The kind of guys that he gives you the long ball, quite often.
- 45:06He either hits them a country mile or he doesn't hit them at all.
- 45:08And he had to hook the long ball into the stands for you, he said 8 home runs this year.
- 45:12Lemmon's fastball is low and outside for ball one to Westland.
- 45:16Herman Franks putting on the signs down behind third, he's relaying from the bench from Leo DeRoger.
- 45:22Westland checks with him and steps back in as Lemmon comes down with an expected curveball,
- 45:26and there's an unintentional foul back as Westland tried to check his swing,
- 45:29but the ball hit the bat and went back anyway.
- 45:31So that'll run his count to 1-1.
- 45:37The 1951 World Series, West Westland hit 235.
- 45:44Now we're ready for the next pitch on West.
- 45:481-1 delivery is a fastball outside.
- 45:53Two balls, one strike.
- 45:59Bob Lemmon, going to pitching here this afternoon for Cleveland,
- 46:02has gotten past two men here in the second inning.
- 46:05Spaces are empty.
- 46:07Down into the corner.
- 46:10This question is going to...
- 46:14This coming up next, we have a lefty right.
- 46:17That'll be close by going to the first back-flipping.
- 46:20I want him, three days here in the second inning, let's get out.
- 46:24That's a number three of Lemmon.
- 46:27There's Tom Ager coming up.
- 46:39Westland hit that ball so hard, he fell rapidly down the left-field line,
- 46:42he kicked off the left-field wall.
- 46:45He had no chance to try to make two out of it.
- 46:47That ball was in the hands of Smith,
- 46:49and he goes with Smith at a very fine arm and a heel,
- 46:51and he's going to take the left hand out the hole to face.
- 46:53A head-punch to Tom Ager with low curveball,
- 46:56and he's going to go for a fast-attacking swing
- 46:58with the spin up around that, so it falls against him.
- 47:00Right down the count, Arm Ager.
- 47:02Oddly right hand hitter, he's got a spreader-fire.
- 47:05Lemmon's got deliveries on the goal,
- 47:07and he's going to go at the peak of the cap of all-1.
- 47:10Lemmon almost had that ball get away from him.
- 47:13He doesn't want to use it anymore.
- 47:14He passes it back to Higgins.
- 47:16That ball is taken a look at.
- 47:18He's got him past it here, like he's a lure.
- 47:21Oh, he's almost five-and-a-nine to Lemmon.
- 47:23He runs around out there,
- 47:25and he's got the arms in his hands.
- 47:27West from the base, he's got a nice, nice first base.
- 47:31Here in the last half, he's got a little bit of a speed arm,
- 47:33and he's got a little bit of nothing in place of Higgins.
- 47:36Tom Ager has a good place to get down to one ball, one step.
- 47:39And in the mound, he's got a little bit of a down-quarter.
- 47:41Lemmon is ready to put the...
- 47:43down-and-come,
- 47:44might be close, low and outside.
- 47:45That's all through.
- 47:47The quick way he's been holding West Western on,
- 47:50West isn't very much of a threat to go down the
- 47:53second base in the big way.
- 47:55You have a London guy in the way.
- 47:57A little bit of a second-mast in the end,
- 47:59but he's got a little bit of a speedy back.
- 48:02Back-flap and fast ball, and he takes it to the knees.
- 48:04It's passing the thing to the side.
- 48:08There are two guys down the mound.
- 48:12Two guys going on here in the second and the knees.
- 48:15And the believers never have a full time on this ball.
- 48:17That's three, and that's all for a time.
- 48:19That's all for the guys here in the second and the knees.
- 48:23As the believers have heard, he's got 110 steps out.
- 48:26He's got a few things on top of his piston.
- 48:29So, here in the second and the knees,
- 48:30the guys like that, but no more.
- 48:33No runs.
- 48:34They're off one base up.
- 48:35That's the grand test single in the last half-way.
- 48:37But you know what?
- 48:38I read one man years back,
- 48:39saying,
- 48:40I'm going to see if there's enough on my back to go.
- 48:42And it's all through.
- 48:43The only feeling to play now is to be there on the New West
- 48:45side, nothing.
- 48:47I'm going to move along into the top half of the number three.
- 48:50I'm Bobby Avila, and we'll be the first to the rest of the team.
- 48:54So, we're going to follow him and then the time will come.
- 48:58After the man goes down my game to work for Bobby Avila,
- 49:01he's feeling to play for the field.
- 49:03A little dunker, drop in there, and he's got it going along.
- 49:06He's on the third on the single, and then the guys are going out there.
- 49:11He's had only one hour, and he's all going so far.
- 49:14That's where his sunlight continues to be found here.
- 49:21Everyone is sitting back and enjoying their things.
- 49:25They're all feeling to play.
- 49:27While West Ressie is getting on the field,
- 49:29West Ressie is sitting up there and he's got his big lip warmed up
- 49:32down there.
- 49:33He's one of the big guys on this ball, Bob.
- 49:36That's another big fella sitting on the bench right there.
- 49:38He may be in the fourth all over,
- 49:39because I've been in the fourth hole.
- 49:41He's a big guy, 6'8", 4", a giant little guy, 3'4".
- 49:46That's what the world says, what the good things.
- 49:481'10", 3'8", great, hard, another important fact about every player in the world.
- 49:53You've got the good thing, you've got the new 1'10",
- 49:553'8", that's a regular thing.
- 50:00So, Bobby Avila, Bobby Avila, Bobby Avila, Bobby 1-1,
- 50:06now they're going up there, they're going to go 50-4,
- 50:11a good curve ball, it slides off low and outside.
- 50:14Now, you see the fast curve ball of his more,
- 50:17and I've seen it all through the lawn.
- 50:20Well, all these kids, we've heard they have three curves,
- 50:22slow, slower, and fourth.
- 50:25He's going to step on the mark here this afternoon.
- 50:27Come to the end of the game, there's the fast ball,
- 50:29it's going in by the air, there's a high pop-up in five territory,
- 50:31directly behind the plate, Western was under it, he's got it.
- 50:34Well, we have out number one here to commence the top half of the third inning.
- 50:37Bobby Avila fouling out to West Western.
- 50:40The batter coming up to the plate now is Ray Dolby,
- 50:43who with runners at first and third and nobody out in the first inning,
- 50:45fouled up an out, he's third base for Hank Thompson.
- 50:49On that to go next will be Flip Rosen, Al Rosen,
- 50:54shooting up in ball game in favor of the Cleveland Indians,
- 50:57Ray Dolby hitting left-handed to well, number 14, stepping in.
- 51:00Magnificent with the pitching there, too, and Dolby takes it outside,
- 51:03that's ball one.
- 51:12Shelby's standing almost straight up and down as he gets ready,
- 51:14stands just off the plate, crowds up.
- 51:16Thompson playing a shallow third and fouled out, lead the court seconds.
- 51:20Magnificent fast ball, and this is our side,
- 51:23shoulder high for ball two.
- 51:25Two and nothing, the count on Dolby with one down here in the top of third and eighth.
- 51:29No base runner, Cleveland leading two to nothing.
- 51:34Williams continues to blow in from behind left field,
- 51:36directly across the diamond about behind right now.
- 51:40Magnificent, delivers two and nothing.
- 51:42Dolby swings, hits the ground ball to second base.
- 51:44Williams in front of it, on airing, close to first in time,
- 51:46and that's off to Dolby.
- 51:49Well, we'll see what's going on quickly here for Cleveland in their top half of third inning.
- 51:53And now Al Rosen, who popped up in the first inning,
- 51:57just after one left, just off the first base line.
- 52:01Al Rosen, over one, a right-hand hitter.
- 52:06Rosen's turning the end, beats the plate, left foot forward to it,
- 52:09and over the coastline.
- 52:11Takes the third ball, and he backs off and threw it to me for a strike.
- 52:20Two down, nobody on top of third inning.
- 52:23Well, Magley finally getting a little strong reach to go for long.
- 52:27Delivers a curve, and Rosen swings and dribbles one up to third base line foul.
- 52:31Rosen's count's back two.
- 52:34Dolby Cucinello retrieving that ball and firing it in.
- 52:36Rosen picks it up off the ground, hands it to Al Barlich, and he tosses it out.
- 52:41Magley with a new apple out there on the mound, has it rubbed and ready.
- 52:45Outfield band around the left and playing deep for Rosen.
- 52:47Rosen hits that long and close.
- 52:49Two more home runs he's hooked this year. Swings on a fast ball, fast curve,
- 52:53and hits the ball off of the right of the plate.
- 52:56Down holding on to the strike two.
- 53:06A ball, two strikes, two down, top of the third, no base running.
- 53:10Magley works a curve, swing around and hits deep for short step.
- 53:13Alvin Dark off the right, upper, but hurried before the first base in time,
- 53:16and a four for Rosen. Nice play by Alvin Dark.
- 53:20Well, three up and three down here in the top half of third inning,
- 53:22and for the first time, the Cleveland Indians go down in one, two, three order
- 53:26with nothing to start.
- 53:28And the score at the end, a two and a half innings to play, Cleveland 2,
- 53:31and the New York Giants, nothing.
- 53:35Well, I've got a hunt for two fans who'd like to hear from
- 53:38Dodger's softball rookie, Carl Schooner, who crashed through with two
- 53:41National League records in his first two major league games.
- 53:44He got two consecutive shutouts and struck out 27 men.
- 53:48He's right here with me now.
- 53:49Carl, how did it feel to mow down 15 of those champion Giants
- 53:54the first time out?
- 53:55Well, it sure was a big day for me, Al.
- 53:57And now tell them how you feel about a shaving cream shave
- 54:00with the Gillette Super Speed Racer.
- 54:02That gives me a great lift too, Al.
- 54:04A French clean shave does it to me.
- 54:07Well, thank you very much, Carl Schooner.
- 54:08That's the Gillette Super Speed Racer he uses,
- 54:11a mighty big package of shaving pumper for just $1.
- 54:14The Gillette World Series record book is a text, and it's free.
- 54:21Let's go into the last half of third inning here,
- 54:24with the leadoff man coming up for the New York Giants,
- 54:26Wiley Loughman.
- 54:28Wiley Loughman stepping in here for his second at bat of the afternoon.
- 54:31He came up in the first inning and tried to bump his way on,
- 54:34a surprise play as it was figured to be,
- 54:36and was thrown out by second baseman Bobby Avella,
- 54:39winning the barehanded play fielded in five the first time to get it.
- 54:43So that was the last half of third inning with the Giants trailing here
- 54:46by the score of 2-0.
- 54:48Jimmy Dudley losing some pretty good baseball so far.
- 54:51Boy, haven't we?
- 54:52They're absolutely right, Al, and it's going to boil down
- 54:54against what the experts said, a real pinchy battle all the way
- 54:57in just about every game.
- 54:59Well, we have a couple of villains thrown out of out here this afternoon
- 55:02that are well respected in their respective leagues.
- 55:05So let's see what happens here in the last half of third inning,
- 55:07Bob Lemon, 23-game winner for Cleveland,
- 55:09takes the mound to pitch to Wiley Loughman,
- 55:11left-handed hitting first baseman of the Giants.
- 55:15This time Wiley takes the pitch and it's low and outside for ball one.
- 55:19Wiley gave no indication to what he was going to do that time.
- 55:24Outfield fan around the right playing rather deep for Wiley,
- 55:27particularly Philly in right field.
- 55:29Lemon comes in with an overhand fastball, it's low, ball two.
- 55:32Wiley Loughman from Lowell, North Carolina,
- 55:39now lives in Matthews, North Carolina.
- 55:45Lemon set, California right-handed deliveries,
- 55:47an overhand fastball, a good right throw for the East Fork Old Stock.
- 55:52Two and one on Wiley Loughman.
- 55:54Last half of third inning here at the Polo Ground, New York City,
- 55:57very ideal day for the fall climate.
- 56:01Shakeslee Water, an overhand curve for Loughman,
- 56:04in there nice little cross right two.
- 56:06Wiley was brilliantly at that one and changed his mind at the last minute.
- 56:12Lemon, who is in Matthew with that curveball and that sinker,
- 56:15also the slider,
- 56:18has been pitching a fine ball game here today so far.
- 56:21So it's a curve and what he thinks on there is a line top hit into right field,
- 56:25dropped into the base hitter from the Philly,
- 56:27and Loughman here in the third, leads off with a single to right.
- 56:29And now here comes Elvin Vart.
- 56:34That's hit number three off Bob Lemon.
- 56:37Hit number five in the game as they clean the end end,
- 56:40dropped Magry who got off to a shaky start, got a pair in the first inning,
- 56:44a single and a dribble.
- 56:46Just having had one man hit by the pitch,
- 56:50that's him a pair of runs in, was tipping them in.
- 56:56Alva Johnson trying to battle their way back here in the last half of his third inning.
- 57:00Lemon with the chips down, Lee Fuller takes the sign.
- 57:03Alvin Vart who walked in the first inning, still with his three game batting percentage of 293.
- 57:07Takes a curve low for ball one.
- 57:10The percentages we're giving you are the percentages over the regular season.
- 57:14Now back in 1951 World Series, you'll find in the World Series record books,
- 57:19Alvin Vart hit through 92.
- 57:26Bob Lemon is set now, takes his runner first,
- 57:28there is the plate, there is the fast ball low.
- 57:31Two balls, no strikes, the count on Alvin Vart.
- 57:34As tension starts to come on a little higher here,
- 57:36particularly amongst the fans who are anticipating perhaps a giant rally.
- 57:43We're not sure of the state, but for a giant one of this World Series,
- 57:45I'd be underdog.
- 57:48The only expert just picked Lee Lin to win the traffic.
- 57:54Or else all of that remains to be seen, as long as the guy has got their swing in danger.
- 57:58Picks a swing on by Vart, there is a shot from the ball foul off the third baseman.
- 58:02Two balls, one strike on Alvin Vart.
- 58:06Giant's had one man on here in the last half of third, that's Wiley Rockman.
- 58:10He went from one to the right three in for a single.
- 58:12He's the base runner, pretty good for the women's coaching there.
- 58:15The second to play first base is Charley Berry.
- 58:18Charley Berry, former Major League leader himself, football star,
- 58:22an official, coach, and now very fine umpire.
- 58:27Rob Lemon, Lee Paul will take the time from here to check his runner back over his shoulder.
- 58:31Williams is picking the plate, fast ball coming in the back,
- 58:33and foul right up over our microphone.
- 58:36Two balls and two strikes, count on Alvin Vart.
- 58:45A few balls goes in play now as Rob Lemon, standing out at the mound,
- 58:49looks around, checks his outfield.
- 58:52Busily rubbing this ball up so he can work the Vart.
- 58:57One man on for the Giants here in the last of the third.
- 59:01There are no outs, Wiley Rockman led off with a single to the right.
- 59:05Victor Wirtz isn't holding him too tight, he's a couple steps back at his feeling yet.
- 59:09Now the pitch.
- 59:10Vart swings on a low curve ball and just as simple foul.
- 59:14That holds the two balls, two strikes now.
- 59:18We'll watch Wiley Rockman, he may be gone, he's always a threat to charge down the base pass.
- 59:25The Giants are all in the regular season, stole 29 bases, the Cleveland Indians stole 40,
- 59:29so there's a pretty good comparison of how these two ball clubs run.
- 59:36Now we'll set for the pitch on Alvin Doc.
- 59:39Rockman stole only one baseman in the regular season, credited with one steal.
- 59:44Fast ball swung on the Doc, there's a high pop-up off the first baseline,
- 59:47going back near the stands and foul territories, into the stands and out of play.
- 59:54Two balls, two strikes, that's count on Alvin Doc as he comes back,
- 59:57takes up that brown Betsey's ears and gets ready to go to work again.
- 1:00:08Throw in this ball game, holding right on, a 2-0 favor to Cleveland.
- 1:00:12They've made it hold up since the first inning to the Giants here in the third,
- 1:00:14a threatening with Wiley Rockman at first.
- 1:00:19The Giants are stranded three so far on the ball game.
- 1:00:23Now we set, down comes the pitch, low and outside, Wiley-Lockman bluffed,
- 1:00:27going to the second base.
- 1:00:28Jim Higgins looked up to see if he was going to move, but Wiley fooled him,
- 1:00:32he stayed right at first.
- 1:00:34Three-two count now on Alvin Doc.
- 1:00:35Now let's see what Wiley-Lockman's going to be doing.
- 1:00:37He'll probably be up and moving with the plankward motion of Bob Lemon's right arm.
- 1:00:42We'll keep a tab on him for you to see if he's going to be galloping.
- 1:00:46Alvin Doc, pretty good hit-and-run man up at the plate.
- 1:00:49He can hit behind it, run it pretty well.
- 1:00:52Alvin takes his lead.
- 1:00:54Three-two pitch, up there goes Lockman.
- 1:00:55Pitch is swung on.
- 1:00:56Hits back to the middle and the center fielder, Wiley-Lockman, keeps on galloping.
- 1:00:59No, he picks up close in the second.
- 1:01:01We have runners at first and third.
- 1:01:10Just got through telling you that Alvin Doc was a pretty good hit-and-run man,
- 1:01:13and he comes through on the three-two count.
- 1:01:17Slams one in the center field, and now the end field will probably draw up tight.
- 1:01:21We'll see.
- 1:01:23Runners at first and third.
- 1:01:24The tying runs are on for the Giants here in the last half of this third inning.
- 1:01:27Nobody out.
- 1:01:28Rosen comes in to play a shallow third base just off third, holding Wiley-Lockman close.
- 1:01:32The second-base combination of Avila and Strickland-Dota double play death.
- 1:01:37Works holds you under Alvin Doc at first base.
- 1:01:40Up at the plate is Don Mueller.
- 1:01:42Pitch to Don is a fastball under the lead.
- 1:01:45Down on the bullpen for Cleveland, Ark Houdeman gets up and starts to throw.
- 1:01:50Don Mueller, who singled the right field in the first inning,
- 1:01:54would very much now like to atone for the error he committed in the very first inning,
- 1:01:58allowing our runner to go from second to third.
- 1:02:02An overhand curveball swung on by Don, hit down to second base.
- 1:02:05Avila up with it and goes back to Strickland at second for the out.
- 1:02:08As the run comes in to score, there's no throw to first.
- 1:02:11So Don Mueller gets credit for batting in the first run of the ballgame.
- 1:02:17Comes in on the fourth out of Alvin Doc, a play going from Bobby Avila at second base
- 1:02:21into George Strickland at second base.
- 1:02:24There's no throw on the first.
- 1:02:26So it's now a 2-1 ballgame.
- 1:02:30Give Don Mueller credit for batting in the run.
- 1:02:32He wrapped in 70 over the course of the regular season.
- 1:02:36So the tying run remains on as manager Al Lopez comes out to have a word of two with his pitcher, Bob Lemon.
- 1:02:45Higgin is going over to talk with him now.
- 1:02:48With one away, the Giants have a tying run on at first base,
- 1:02:50and Willie Mays, the National League batting champion, is coming up.
- 1:02:54Mays, who in the first inning popped up an out for the shortstop, George Strickland.
- 1:02:59So it could be tightened right down here in the last half of third inning.
- 1:03:04Or Higgin could hold the lead they now possess of one run.
- 1:03:08Al Lopez asking instructions from Al Barlich, play on fire, by discussing some rule or other.
- 1:03:14Now Al Lopez, very much satisfied with the explanation of the entire fair,
- 1:03:20turns and goes off with a good one dugout.
- 1:03:22Bob Holliman continues to floor down in the Cleveland bullpen, strong on the right-hander.
- 1:03:27Now Willie Mays coming up to the plate, hitting right-hander.
- 1:03:30He's 0-1 today.
- 1:03:31Third ball thrown into the bird on the outside to Willie for ball one.
- 1:03:35Don Mueller, who is much faster on the base pass than you think, is leading off at first,
- 1:03:39and Vickworth is holding the inside corner on him.
- 1:03:42By the Fitzsimmons coaching, Don Mueller off.
- 1:03:46Down and into his position.
- 1:03:47Now checks his runner at first, delivers the plate.
- 1:03:49Low and outside to Willie Mays, for ball two.
- 1:03:53Very unfortunately for Don Mueller, in 1951, a broken leg,
- 1:04:00kept him from participating in the World Series.
- 1:04:03However, he's getting his opportunity and playing in this one.
- 1:04:07He leads off at first now.
- 1:04:08The pitch plate is made, Mays jumps back from one of the knees inside for ball three.
- 1:04:15You never know, as you see the pitcher spin one down from the rubber,
- 1:04:19or home plate, whether it might be the deciding pitch in the ball game.
- 1:04:25Sometimes when you go back over to that respect, that happens to be the pitch,
- 1:04:28and you didn't realize.
- 1:04:29Curve ball is low and outside to Mays for ball four.
- 1:04:34So Mays walks, that's the second base on ball, surrendered by Lemon.
- 1:04:39Now the tying run, and Mueller has been pushed on down to second.
- 1:04:43Now the batter is Hank Thompson.
- 1:04:46Third base from Hank Thompson, end of the inning in the first,
- 1:04:48by rolling wide at first base, and Victor Wirtzkow will do that.
- 1:04:51Rich Stover stepped on first, and the inning was over, as far as the Giants were concerned.
- 1:04:55They had a pretty good putt going at the time.
- 1:04:58So here's Thompson moving in again, heading left-handed.
- 1:05:01He's deep, feet wide, spread apart.
- 1:05:04George Strickland, in to say a word to pitcher Bob Lemon,
- 1:05:07turns and cuts back to his shortstop position.
- 1:05:09He's got a 2-1 ball game going here now in the last half of the third inning.
- 1:05:12Giants tying run at second, end on Mueller.
- 1:05:15Throws him playing a shallow third with his left-hand hitter.
- 1:05:18And the first pitch comes in. Thompson takes it low inside for ball one.
- 1:05:22Down to the bullpen, our Hoderman continues to crawl even harder.
- 1:05:25Get ready, just in case Bob Lemon should call her here.
- 1:05:27And what looks at this moment to be a rather important third inning, as far as the Giants are concerned.
- 1:05:33Lemon gets set.
- 1:05:34Delivers a fastball. Thompson swings, he doesn't get it.
- 1:05:38This Bob Lemon is the kind of guy who isn't afraid to come in
- 1:05:41with a pitch he believes to be best in the clutch.
- 1:05:45A very fine competitor. This whole Cleveland ball club this year sort of caught fire.
- 1:05:50They've been fine competitors over the entire route.
- 1:05:53Lemon is ready now. Delivers, Thompson takes a lot of curve inside.
- 1:06:00Oh, let's see, that'll be two balls, one strike on Hank Thompson.
- 1:06:04One out for the Giants in the last half of the third.
- 1:06:07They scored one time and it's 2-1 in favor of Cleveland.
- 1:06:11Lemon out there, born his neck trying to hold the one run advantage.
- 1:06:15His mates have given him.
- 1:06:17Don Mueller representing the tying run for the Giants, leads down off second.
- 1:06:21William Ayres who can fly, usually runs off under his cap, leading off at first.
- 1:06:25Pitch to Cape Town, there's a bounding ball hit away to it, but they hit.
- 1:06:29Here comes Don Mueller.
- 1:06:30The throw is to try to cut William Ayres off at third.
- 1:06:33He's flying over there and he's there safely.
- 1:06:35The ball game's tied up.
- 1:06:37So far, Lemon gives up at number five.
- 1:07:01A single right field to Hank Thompson.
- 1:07:03Hank drives in the second giant run, William Ayres shooting out out from under his cap,
- 1:07:07made it to third, beat Billy Snow.
- 1:07:09And a first for run coming in from second, tied by Don Mueller, scores easily to lock it all up.
- 1:07:13And here's Monty Urban with one out, run as a first and third up at the plate.
- 1:07:16Lemon curves him, Monty takes the pitch outside and low.
- 1:07:19He started to go for it, checked himself in time, take ball one.
- 1:07:23Monty Urban started the second inning for the Giants by fouling up and out to catch Jim Higgins.
- 1:07:28So we've got a brand new ball game right here at the Polo Ground.
- 1:07:33Giants threatening to break the tie with William Ayres on the third base.
- 1:07:37Pitch to play to Monty Urban, the fastball, fire through under the letters, good for strike.
- 1:07:41The count is one and one.
- 1:07:52Bob Lemon in trouble.
- 1:07:54No one knows it any better than Bob does.
- 1:07:57Texas runner at third delivers, Monty Urban swings on our medium speed fastball and doesn't get it.
- 1:08:02That's like two.
- 1:08:04One ball and two strikes, the count on Monty Urban.
- 1:08:07Here's another situation where a sacrifice flyer can get in the run,
- 1:08:10and the course will not be charged at the time of bat to Monty Urban should that fly ball be forthcoming.
- 1:08:17So Lemon is bearing down here on the clutch, and it is the clutch as far as he's concerned.
- 1:08:21Thompson leading away from first. The pitch, this one on, there's a high foul ball hit back to the first section.
- 1:08:27Rolls down the screen, back down on the playing field.
- 1:08:31William Ayres hugging right close at the third base.
- 1:08:33Herman Franks is keeping him there.
- 1:08:35He's the third base coach for the Giants.
- 1:08:37Rosen is playing deep behind third now.
- 1:08:40Hold a couple steps off the line.
- 1:08:42The outfield band around the left and deep.
- 1:08:44George Strickland, he can hold a shortstop.
- 1:08:46Bobby Evita, pull over a couple steps toward second base, and holding on to first base.
- 1:08:50Keep the runner close.
- 1:08:51Victor Wirtz.
- 1:08:52William Ayres takes his lead at third, and wanders back toward third as Lemon pitches.
- 1:08:56One-hundred-and-miss.
- 1:08:58Lost like three, and that's all for Monty Urban.
- 1:09:00That was the big out for Lemon to be getting.
- 1:09:03That's his second strikeout here this afternoon.
- 1:09:06And before the next man comes up to the plate, that'll be Davey Williams.
- 1:09:08Let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:09:11This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 1:09:15WGN Chicago v. Chicago Tribune, station your exclusive World Series station.
- 1:09:26Ready to go back to work here now with Bob Lemon stepping up the pitch to Davey Williams.
- 1:09:32Davey, who bounced down to third base, was thrown out to second inning by Cliff Rosen.
- 1:09:36Runners at first and third.
- 1:09:38The pitch to Williams is over at the knees, nicely percocced up.
- 1:09:42Davey Williams, who over the course of the regular season in the National League, batted 2-22.
- 1:09:47He had quite a time with his batting average, but the kid never complained.
- 1:09:51Shaded in there day after day and did the best he could.
- 1:09:57Now Lemon ready.
- 1:09:58Delivers a curve, and Williams strides in and takes time outside.
- 1:10:02Count is one-to-one on him now.
- 1:10:07A couple of guys in the Cleveland Ross here took their bumps and their aches and pains and said nothing either.
- 1:10:11Larry Doby played quite a bit of a season with a pulled fire muscle.
- 1:10:15Now Rosen did the same. He also had a broken finger. He played the all-star game with a broken finger.
- 1:10:20George Strickland with a broken jaw, but he stayed right with it.
- 1:10:23Curve ball swung on, but Williams bounced past the mound, a shortstop.
- 1:10:25Strickland in, picks up, throws first in time, and Williams is out to retire to side.
- 1:10:30That's a 6-3 ground out, short first.
- 1:10:33So here in the third inning, the New York Giants come bowling right back with a pair of runs.
- 1:10:39That one-two, three base hits. Two runs, three base hits.
- 1:10:43No errors, there were two men left on.
- 1:10:45That means they're stranded five and going to bat three times.
- 1:10:48So the score at the end of the third inning play now is the, let's include the Indians too, the home-standing New York Giants too.
- 1:10:58No shots, field cuts, we've got the miss and misses. How are you fit for play? Do you have plenty? How are you fit for play? You better check.
- 1:11:09We've made sure you have enough of a worn-out playmate, shaven mighty tough.
- 1:11:16How are you fit for play? Better look to let the great we mean.
- 1:11:23Victor Wirtz here at the Polo grounds is going to be the first man up for the Cleveland Indians to start the fourth inning in a brand new ballgame, all tied at 2-2.
- 1:11:32It was a bat of Victor Wirtz back in the first inning when he wrapped his triple off the right center field wall to score a pair of runs.
- 1:11:38It was Victor Wirtz who put the Cleveland Indians out in front.
- 1:11:41And now the wearer of number 23, a left-hand hitter, is coming up to the plate for his second at bat.
- 1:11:46He has one hit for one drive.
- 1:11:48Sal Magley has been placed back on an even footing with Bob Lemon as these two veteran right-handers go at each other here this afternoon in the first game of the 51st World Series.
- 1:11:59Victor Wirtz moving in.
- 1:12:02Overly close stance was a chin guard on his right leg to protect it.
- 1:12:06He used to foul so many foul balls down off that shin that he devised the protection.
- 1:12:13Magley's first pitch to him is just a little outside the ball one.
- 1:12:17Wirtz to be followed by Philly and then by shortstop George Strickland who will belong in the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:12:23Magley ready to limit that cook it on curve ball and gets it in there for a strike.
- 1:12:28That gets quite a kick. I know as Jimmy Dudley does out of the motion of Sal Magley.
- 1:12:33He sort of keeps that elbow cooked. Gives you the idea that he's throwing with a cook it on.
- 1:12:40Another hand curve this time swung on by Wirtz, comes out on the left field, a pin-out for the base hit.
- 1:12:44Victor Wirtz goes down to first and holds on as Marty Irvin comes up for the ball and fires it into Alvin Dock at second.
- 1:12:49So Wirtz opens the fourth, hitting an outside pitch and dumping it in the left field.
- 1:12:55See that's only the third hit.
- 1:12:58Irvin given up now by Sal Magley.
- 1:13:02We've had eight hits in the ball game all two.
- 1:13:06Well the potential tie-breaking run for Clegan is on as Wirtz opens here in the fourth of the single.
- 1:13:12That brings on Dave Philly who retired the side in the first with a fly ball to right field.
- 1:13:16He's hitting left handed against Magley. Swings on the first pitch and dribbles one back to the mound.
- 1:13:20Magley's off his only play, will go back to Loughman.
- 1:13:23And Philly is out with Dave Wirtz, or rather with Rick Wirtz, moving on the play over to second base.
- 1:13:28So he represents the tie-breaking run now at second. He's in scoring position.
- 1:13:33That wasn't a bunt by Philly. He was swinging away.
- 1:13:37Magley to Loughman for the put-out. We have one out and George Strickland who struck out in the second.
- 1:13:41Getting Sal Magley with his first strike out of the game. Moving in.
- 1:13:51Philly stepping off at second base now.
- 1:13:53Thompson playing a shallow third to Strickland as the pitch is made.
- 1:13:57Fired across the knees by Magley for strike one call.
- 1:14:02George Strickland tall and slender.
- 1:14:07New Orleans, Louisiana.
- 1:14:11Strickland feed wide, spread apart.
- 1:14:13Magley over his head checks his runner over his right shoulder.
- 1:14:15Delivers the play. Pass curve. Swing on. There's a bounding ball hit down the dark. He's up with it.
- 1:14:19Throws across the diamond in time. And George Strickland is out.
- 1:14:23That's of course on the play holding right on at second as it was being made right in front of him.
- 1:14:28Alvin Darks had a couple of tough chances going deep in the hole over to his right.
- 1:14:32He's made the play.
- 1:14:34George Strickland has had two hard plays and bounding balls hit right at his feet. He's come up with them nicely.
- 1:14:40So all in all we've had some pretty sparkling plays on the infield here so far.
- 1:14:44In some cases they have been routine plays but the boys have made them look good.
- 1:14:50Here's Jim Higgins who came up in the second inning and was out number two in that inning by popping up and out to third base with Hank Thompson just off to the left of Pitch's mound.
- 1:14:59Jim Higgins moving in.
- 1:15:03That's a number eight in the order. He's from Linn, Massachusetts where he was born.
- 1:15:10Now he's out in Lakewood, Ohio. Takes first pitch and a cross save. 40 American East for a strike.
- 1:15:18Two down, one on. Lakewood's open with a single jump in the left field.
- 1:15:23Moved down to second on the infield ground out by Dave Kelly and he's still there.
- 1:15:27Still two-two ball game. When it's half of the fourth inning, it's a fuller round.
- 1:15:31That ball is taken and turned to a guy.
- 1:15:35Touch of Weston trying to get the runner but not in time.
- 1:15:38The ball's pretty away from Williams. Goes on out into short center field.
- 1:15:41So Victor Wirtz decides he better hold right on at second.
- 1:15:45But there's no arrow on the play.
- 1:15:47Weston's just trying to pick a man off at second base. He thought Wirtz had a pretty good lead.
- 1:15:51So the count is one and one now on Jim Higgins.
- 1:15:58There's Wirtz taking his lead again at second.
- 1:16:02Jim Higgins standing at the plate with a count of one ball, one strike.
- 1:16:05Sal Magley shakes off the sign offered by Weston.
- 1:16:08Shakes it off again.
- 1:16:11Once more he shakes it off. Now he's ready.
- 1:16:15There he and Weston have gotten together and Jim Higgins decides they're taking too much time and steps away from the plate.
- 1:16:20Count on Jim Higgins. The Cleveland catcher's one ball, one strike.
- 1:16:24Second time up and he's 0 for 1.
- 1:16:26Down comes the pitch. Crayball swung on to Higgins and popped out.
- 1:16:29There's Alvin Dark at check-stop.
- 1:16:31Waiting for it to come down. He's got it.
- 1:16:33That's all for Cleveland here in the fourth inning.
- 1:16:36They opened with a single left hit by Victor Wirtz.
- 1:16:40He got down to second but that's as far as he could get.
- 1:16:42No runs, one hit for Cleveland. They're a third of the ball game.
- 1:16:45There were no errors by the Giants and one man left on.
- 1:16:48Cleveland is now standing 3 and going to bat in for an inning.
- 1:16:51So they score at the end of 3 and a half and into play now.
- 1:16:54Remains Cleveland 2, the New York Giants 2.
- 1:16:58Well, man, when you just played, how did you know it's really something
- 1:17:03what a quick-racing shaving cream shave with a modern Gillette Super Speed razor can do for you?
- 1:17:09Well, maybe it won't take the place of a good night's sleep,
- 1:17:11but it sure gives you a fast chip in the hive.
- 1:17:14Do you want easy, good-looking shaves?
- 1:17:16Do you want to start out your day or a step out of night really refreshed?
- 1:17:20Well, then get yourself a Gillette Super Speed.
- 1:17:22It's made all in one piece.
- 1:17:24It changes blades and rinses cream in a jiffy.
- 1:17:26The most convenient razor ever.
- 1:17:28One dollar buys it complete with blue blade dispenser and styrene travel case.
- 1:17:33What's more, right now, you get the new 112-page Gillette World Series record book with it free.
- 1:17:39Well, they lost that is, and they're going fast.
- 1:17:45Now to the last half of inning number 4 here in the first game of the 54 World Series.
- 1:17:49Still all tied at the 2-2.
- 1:17:52Wouldn't want a better kickoff game than the one we're having here this afternoon.
- 1:17:56A couple of veteran right-handers going against each other.
- 1:17:59Bob Lemon for the Cleveland Wins.
- 1:18:01A 23-7 record for the year.
- 1:18:03And Sal Magna, a 14-6 record.
- 1:18:05Both pitchers having pitch shutouts over the course of the regular season.
- 1:18:08Both of them in their respective leagues called Mr. Tough when the chips are down,
- 1:18:11and they proved it here this afternoon.
- 1:18:14The first lineup for the drives.
- 1:18:16The number 8 hitter in the order, West Westroom.
- 1:18:18And the line shot single down the third base line between Al Rosen and third base,
- 1:18:22having the left-field corner when he came up back in the second inning.
- 1:18:25Lemon throws him the overhand fastball, and Westroom after pops it into foul territory off to the right of the plate.
- 1:18:30I don't think anybody's going to get to that group.
- 1:18:32That's back into the stand-ground to play.
- 1:18:34Victor Wirtz and Jim Higgins both giving it a big run-down.
- 1:18:39So the last half of the fourth inning, as Westroom still standing at the plate with the count of strike one.
- 1:18:47For the Giants, two runs on five hits. They've committed an error right up from now.
- 1:18:51And for the Friedman Indians, two runs on three hits off my day. They have not committed an error.
- 1:18:57Lemon gets set. Let's see, Westroom.
- 1:18:59Pitching the overhand pitcher curve ball.
- 1:19:01One run and hit pass goes not into a third base.
- 1:19:03Up past third base in the left field, and Westroom once again has single the left.
- 1:19:11Well, there's hit number 6 off Lemon.
- 1:19:14Westroom has picked up one third of them. He's had two.
- 1:19:17Westroom leads off to the Giants in the fourth with a single to left field.
- 1:19:22Now Rosen grabbed the fastball, but he couldn't come up with it.
- 1:19:27Right past his glove and out in the left.
- 1:19:29Nevada now is Sal Megley.
- 1:19:31Sal struck out for second inning, one of the two strikeouts affected by Lemon.
- 1:19:35Westroom leads it first.
- 1:19:36The pitcher's made to the plate, expecting the Bucky infield charges in.
- 1:19:38There's the attempt at bunt that's missed for a strike.
- 1:19:46Sal will be watching Westroom.
- 1:19:48He's got to play it safely too at first base.
- 1:19:50Megley's got to get a hold of that ball or it could be plenty of trouble.
- 1:19:54Infield pulled in expecting the bunt again.
- 1:19:56Lemon delivers.
- 1:19:58Megley squares off to bunt the ball and then takes the pitch outside.
- 1:20:01That's ball one.
- 1:20:03One ball and one strike.
- 1:20:05Count on Sal Megley.
- 1:20:06He's been sent up to the plate apparently to get that runner down to second.
- 1:20:11Betty Fitzsimmons coaching down there.
- 1:20:13He's talking Westroom off at first.
- 1:20:15In comes the pitch.
- 1:20:16And there's the plate outside as Megley ducks the bunt and takes the pitch again.
- 1:20:21Two balls, one strike.
- 1:20:24A little tense situation right now.
- 1:20:26Two-two ball game between Cleveland and New York.
- 1:20:31Indians have the Tommy Hawks out.
- 1:20:34The Giants apparently wearing their hard hats.
- 1:20:37Count on fastball.
- 1:20:38They're running down the first base line to trickle foul.
- 1:20:42So that's strike two on Sal Megley.
- 1:20:44And the big danger of the bunt goes by the boards now as to bunt foul on the third.
- 1:20:49When does the strike out?
- 1:20:51Still you never know about Leo DeRosier.
- 1:20:52He's very unpredictable.
- 1:20:54He's liable to order Megley to go ahead and front of this one.
- 1:20:57We'll have to watch that play before we make sure.
- 1:20:58Let's see what Westroom's going to be doing.
- 1:21:02Westroom now taking no lead at first.
- 1:21:04Words on the inside corner holding him.
- 1:21:05Rosen is still expecting the bunt.
- 1:21:06It's playing a shallow third.
- 1:21:08First to the infield.
- 1:21:09That is the second base combination.
- 1:21:10Move back.
- 1:21:11Hopefully of course for a chance to get a twin kill.
- 1:21:13There is the attempted bunt.
- 1:21:14Miscompletely in the strike three.
- 1:21:16So DeRosier kept it on.
- 1:21:20Megley is out.
- 1:21:22That preliminary is his third strikeout.
- 1:21:24An attempted bunt was miscompleted.
- 1:21:27So Westroom is still at first.
- 1:21:28We have one out here in the last half before the inning on the New York Giants.
- 1:21:32And Wadie Lachlan coming up for his third at bat of the day.
- 1:21:36He's one for two.
- 1:21:37Tried to bunt one past the mound in the first inning.
- 1:21:39He was successful enough with Bobby Avila coming in fast.
- 1:21:41He kept him through the first.
- 1:21:43And that was all for Wadie Lachlan.
- 1:21:47Wadie single the right in the third inning to lead the inning off.
- 1:21:50And later came around the score and hit back through the middle and of course out.
- 1:21:55Lachlan batting left-handed.
- 1:21:57He hit it off today.
- 1:21:58That is his regular season.
- 1:21:59He hit 251.
- 1:22:01Takes fastball.
- 1:22:02Five by lemon under the knees.
- 1:22:03Score ball one.
- 1:22:05Outfield playing fanned around the right to Wadie.
- 1:22:07The old man playing deep in the outfield is Dave Philly, the right fielder.
- 1:22:10He's playing straight away right.
- 1:22:11Playing deep.
- 1:22:13Felt towards part way back and he's feeling that with his left-hand hitter up there.
- 1:22:18Westroom leads it first.
- 1:22:20Lemon picking.
- 1:22:21Lachlan swings and beats him into the ground top.
- 1:22:23Last half of inning number four, the first game of the 54 series.
- 1:22:27All tied up at two and two.
- 1:22:30Giants with one out have the potential tie breaking run on it first in Westwestroom.
- 1:22:34Open with his second straight single.
- 1:22:36Hit the left field.
- 1:22:40Lachlan standing in straight up and down almost like a chocolate soldier.
- 1:22:45Now leans over the plate slightly.
- 1:22:49Lemon to the top of the stretch.
- 1:22:50Texas runner at first.
- 1:22:51Delivers the play to curve.
- 1:22:52Wadie Lachlan swings.
- 1:22:53There's a bounding ball hit to Vic Wurtz.
- 1:22:54He picks it up, looks at second.
- 1:22:55No chance to get the runner at second.
- 1:22:56Stucks on first for the out on Wadie Lachlan.
- 1:23:03Oh, there's the second out and Westroom has moved down to take station second in scoring position.
- 1:23:16Coming up to the plate now, hitting right hand is Alvin Dock.
- 1:23:18Alvin hit behind rather not behind but hit in the center field right at the backbone of the diamond.
- 1:23:26Wadie Lachlan moves on at first base.
- 1:23:28In the third inning, moved Wadie all the way around third.
- 1:23:32Alvin Dock standing in.
- 1:23:39Lemon checks his runner, delivers the plate, medium speed curve ball that whistles along outside to ball one.
- 1:23:52Dock looks around at Herman Franks to take the sign.
- 1:23:55Lemon leaning forward in that characteristic pose of his.
- 1:23:57Left hand on his left knee.
- 1:23:59Ball hidden behind his back.
- 1:24:00Now he's ready.
- 1:24:01Delivers the curve.
- 1:24:02Dock swings, hits the ball wide to third.
- 1:24:04Roses out, picks up, plays it through to first base.
- 1:24:06Not in time.
- 1:24:07Dock takes it out, Westroom takes third, and the Giants have runners at first and third.
- 1:24:14Learned our stop by third baseman Al Rosen to keep that ball from going into left field,
- 1:24:18but he couldn't recover himself in time and it goes as a base hit.
- 1:24:22So Alvin Dock gets his second base hit.
- 1:24:25He is 2-4-2 officially.
- 1:24:28So Westroom is down to third.
- 1:24:30Alvin Dock is at first, two outs, hit number seven off Lemon.
- 1:24:35Check me on that, Jim, is that hit number seven?
- 1:24:36That's right, hit number seven now.
- 1:24:38Coming up to the plate now is Don Mueller, who has one of the seven base hits.
- 1:24:43Got that back in the first inning.
- 1:24:45Has a golden opportunity here to put the Giants out in front.
- 1:24:48As with two down, they have runners at first and third.
- 1:24:50Second is open.
- 1:24:51Lemon delivers.
- 1:24:52Mueller swings, there's a bonding ball to Victor Wirtz, who down on one knee picks it up,
- 1:24:55reaches over in two steps, finds his foot on first base, and that is all for Mueller.
- 1:25:00Well, that's all for the Giants here in the fourth inning.
- 1:25:03No runs, they had two base hits, stranded two.
- 1:25:05There were no errors.
- 1:25:07So let's see, it'll be 2-4-6-7 men.
- 1:25:10The Giants have left on here and going to bat four times.
- 1:25:12And the score at the end of the fourth inning remains the New York Giants 2
- 1:25:16and the visiting Cleveland Indians 2.
- 1:25:21Well, October is a month when good sportsmanship is evident all around us,
- 1:25:25not only in our World Series and our football games,
- 1:25:28but also in the community chess drive that comes at this time of the year.
- 1:25:32This is your opportunity, friends, to be a good sport by helping those in need.
- 1:25:36Many, many deserving families in every typical community
- 1:25:39are helped directly by red feather agencies each year.
- 1:25:42And in the long run, all of us are helped because these agencies do so much
- 1:25:47to make our community a safer, health-better place to live in.
- 1:25:50When the drive comes in your neighborhood,
- 1:25:52won't you please give generously to your community ch...
- 1:25:55Ready for the fifth inning now.
- 1:25:57It'll be Bob Lemon that'll be the first man up.
- 1:25:59Bob will be followed by the top of the batting order, Al Smith,
- 1:26:02and then will come Bobby Avella.
- 1:26:04We still have a 2-2 ball game cooking along here at the Polo grounds,
- 1:26:07and the fans are ready to get the kick out of this one.
- 1:26:10I sincerely hope that around the world,
- 1:26:12you folks are enjoying the Giants Cavalcade Sports broadcast also.
- 1:26:16Now here in the fifth inning, Bob Lemon, who walked back in the second,
- 1:26:19coming up for his first official at bat, hitting left-handed.
- 1:26:22Magme tries his first pitch, gets it in there low for ball one.
- 1:26:28Magme...
- 1:26:30locked in the pitching duel with Bob Lemon, to whom he is pitching right now.
- 1:26:34Starts his motion, delivers one and all.
- 1:26:37The fastball is under the knees for ball two to Lemon.
- 1:26:40The outfield for Lemon is fanned around to right, playing him deep.
- 1:26:43The well-hitting home runs, Lemon can do that too.
- 1:26:46Magme... up over his head, kicks and throws.
- 1:26:52The curveball, fast curve, is off the inside corner,
- 1:26:55right on the inside corner, just off the belt.
- 1:26:58Strike one.
- 1:27:00Two and one, the count on Bob Lemon.
- 1:27:03Cleveland's lead-off man here in the fifth inning, the 2-2 ball game.
- 1:27:07Magme fires away at that play, two and one.
- 1:27:10The ball is in the net, and the fastball is in the net.
- 1:27:13Magme fires away at that play, two and one.
- 1:27:16Curveball is over for a strike-and-call.
- 1:27:19Magme, back to visit the rosin bag, snaps it away.
- 1:27:23Grounds that ball around the palms of his hands, switches glove back on.
- 1:27:27Lemon waits for him very patiently, standing about three-quarters deep,
- 1:27:30straight away.
- 1:27:32The 2-2 pitch by Magme, an overhand curveball,
- 1:27:34swung on by Lemon and beaten foul into the ground.
- 1:27:37Out holds, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:27:46Curveball in play as it's walked partially back to the mound.
- 1:27:51Magme will go back and finish scuffing it up as much as the law allows.
- 1:27:57He'll be getting ready.
- 1:27:592-2 count here on Bob Lemon, top half of the fifth inning, first man up for Cleveland.
- 1:28:06Here's the pitch, two and two, fastball swung on, and it's a straightaway center field.
- 1:28:10There goes Mays, back still, going back under it, makes the catch.
- 1:28:13There's no basket catch that time for Willie.
- 1:28:15He had to reach up over his head to make the catch on that one.
- 1:28:18Lemon, lining out the center field to Willie Mays.
- 1:28:21So we have one out here in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:28:23That brings on Al Smith.
- 1:28:25He's coming up for his third time this afternoon.
- 1:28:29These New York Giants, you know, have played in quite a few World Series.
- 1:28:32Today's game makes the 77th series game the Giants have played in.
- 1:28:35So they've played more World Series games than any other National League team in modern baseball.
- 1:28:40It's all in the Gillette World Series record book, a real shot collection of baseball book.
- 1:28:44Sure hope you're going to get your copy now.
- 1:28:47Al Smith taking the first pitch for ball one.
- 1:28:50Stands up, pumps up back nervously as Sal Magme comes down with the next pitch.
- 1:28:53So there's a curve in off the hips for ball two.
- 1:28:56One out here for the Indians in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:28:59No base runners. Score still rides into a piece.
- 1:29:03Graven scored in the top of the first inning on a pair of runs.
- 1:29:06And in case you tuned in a little late.
- 1:29:08Smith the Rudolph man was hit for the pitch.
- 1:29:11He was single down to second base and when a bobble came in the outfield,
- 1:29:13but on the other he kept on going to third.
- 1:29:16Then after Derby fouled out and Rosen popped out.
- 1:29:19Quartz tripled him home off the right center field wall.
- 1:29:21There's a pitch at the plate now.
- 1:29:22Under the knees to Smith. His count is still nothing.
- 1:29:25Then the Giants came back in the third inning.
- 1:29:28Loughman led off with a single.
- 1:29:30And on the three to count Alvin Dark hit back to the middle to put Loughman at third.
- 1:29:33Mueller got one run in when he forced Loughman at second from a field up to Strickland.
- 1:29:38Then after Mays it walked, Thompson single the right field to drive in another run.
- 1:29:41And Mueller scored.
- 1:29:43There's a curve ball over for a strike.
- 1:29:46Fast curve ball, just a little wrinkle and the count is three and one.
- 1:29:50Three balls, one strike on Al Smith the leadoff man with one out here in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:29:55So a 2-2 ball game is still moving along.
- 1:30:00Sal Magley takes his sign from Westrom.
- 1:30:05Here's the 3-1 delivery.
- 1:30:07Curve in there for a strike.
- 1:30:09Sal didn't go to the fast ball, he flipped the curve.
- 1:30:15The count is three balls and two strikes on left fielder Al Smith of Cleveland.
- 1:30:20He's 0-1, struck out to second.
- 1:30:23Swings on his pitch and sends a slow dribbler down the third baseline.
- 1:30:25It's Sal Magley off the mound a field post, first not in time.
- 1:30:28That'll probably go as a base hit for Al Smith.
- 1:30:33We'll wait for the official scores to give us the official verdict on that one.
- 1:30:38The scores here this afternoon are Ed McCauley of the Cleveland News,
- 1:30:42Barney Crimeco of the New York Journal American,
- 1:30:45and Harry Jones of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
- 1:30:49And apparently it's going to go as a base hit.
- 1:30:51It's a base hit for Al Smith.
- 1:30:53Very pleased to put him out all the way.
- 1:30:56So that'll be hit number four off Magley.
- 1:31:03Bobby Avila.
- 1:31:05Bobby hitting right handed.
- 1:31:06He has one for two.
- 1:31:08Dumped a single to right center field back in the first inning.
- 1:31:10Figured very much in the uprising.
- 1:31:14He got the Cleveland Indians a pair of runs.
- 1:31:17And Avila came along in the second inning.
- 1:31:19Or rather the third inning, far enough to be catching.
- 1:31:23Next curve ball that's flipped over first strike.
- 1:31:26Magley, going with a string on that one, getting in there just about waist high.
- 1:31:32The runner at first base is Al Smith.
- 1:31:37Magley checks his runner first, looks down at Avila, comes in with the curve ball,
- 1:31:41and Avila takes it outside to fill the first, trying to get Al Smith out of time.
- 1:31:46So Wester apparently called for the pitch out.
- 1:31:50Down in the bullpen for the Giants, the veteran right-hander, Marv Grissom,
- 1:31:54and the left-hander, darn little of both, warming up and getting ready in case
- 1:31:58Sal Magley should have any difficulty here in the fourth.
- 1:32:02Sal may have pulled a bad back when he went after that slow-bounding ball,
- 1:32:05hit off to the left of the mound, to his right.
- 1:32:09Curve ball to Avila, swung on.
- 1:32:10There is a high fly ball deep in the left field.
- 1:32:12Monty Irvin is under it, it's going to be a routine chance for Monty, he's got it.
- 1:32:16And Smith has to come hurrying back first.
- 1:32:18So Avila flies deep to left field to Monty Irvin, proud number two.
- 1:32:22And the batter coming up now will be Larry Goby, the left-hand hitting center fielder.
- 1:32:27Let the ball crowd in home runs with 32 this year, and also runs about an indy part, 126.
- 1:32:35To and through the score here between Cleveland and the Giants.
- 1:32:37We're in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:32:39The possible tie-breaking run for Cleveland is on at first base.
- 1:32:42There are two down, and Magley's about to pitch now to left-hand batting Larry Goby.
- 1:32:53Larry Goby, originally from Camden, South Carolina, now lives over here in Patterson, New Jersey,
- 1:32:57number five in the full-o ground.
- 1:32:59The pitch to him is a fast-court outside, the ball one.
- 1:33:12Goby's been quite a competitor since having come up with the indents.
- 1:33:18Another hand curve to him, it's high off the face, that's ball two.
- 1:33:25Larry Goby very clean to put.
- 1:33:29The fellow that can give that ball an awful long ride if he gets good solid wood on it.
- 1:33:34Al Smith, the runner at first base for Cleveland.
- 1:33:39There's Whitey Lockman standing behind him as he takes his lead.
- 1:33:43Magley ready pitches.
- 1:33:45Swung on, there's a little loopy fly ball hit out into right field.
- 1:33:47It's going to drop in there for the base.
- 1:33:48Smith is on his way, moves on into third base as Mueller's throw comes into Alvin Darkett's second.
- 1:33:54So Goby looks one into right field.
- 1:33:57Al Smith running on the blow with a pair down, moves into third, and that's the fifth hit given up by Magley.
- 1:34:06And Westrom goes out to have a talk with him.
- 1:34:09So all the Cleveland Indians are cooking up a little brew here that might be kind of bitter for the Giants to take.
- 1:34:15All depends on what Sal Magley's able to come up with here in the top of fifth inning.
- 1:34:21He's going to pitch to Al Rosen.
- 1:34:23He's popped up to first base to Whitey Lockman back in the first inning,
- 1:34:27and then retired to side in the third by hitting a ground ball sharply to shortstop to Alvin Dark.
- 1:34:35Now with runners first and third, second open and two down, Rosen comes up again.
- 1:34:39All game tied at two apiece.
- 1:34:42Magley with his work very definitely cut out for him, a set.
- 1:34:45Checks his runners at both stations.
- 1:34:46An overhand curve ball was thrown to Rosen, slung on, and popped up into right field.
- 1:34:49Don Mueller comes over for a routine chance and right under it, makes the catch to retire to side.
- 1:34:55The Cleveland set passes for the boards here in the top half of fifth inning.
- 1:34:58No runs, there were two base hits for Cleveland.
- 1:35:01They're in their total of five.
- 1:35:03There were no errors for the Giants, and Cleveland left the pair on to run the total air to five.
- 1:35:08So the score at the end of four and one half innings of play now, it is Cleveland 2,
- 1:35:13the New York Giants 2. Then it's a safe bet that you'll feel like you've got out on the right side of the bed
- 1:35:20if you take a first shaving cream shave with the new Gillette Super Speed Racer.
- 1:35:24It's a wonderful lift in the clean, refreshing Gillette shade.
- 1:35:27A free copy of Gillette's World Series record book.
- 1:35:29This book is packed with series dough, so get your copy while they last.
- 1:35:35And now, ladies and gentlemen, it's been a terrific kick for me to be able to do the first four and a half innings
- 1:35:40of the first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 1:35:43And I know you're down to hear a guy that Cleveland's been listening to for quite some time
- 1:35:49and Cleveland's been liking for quite some time because he's a likeable guy.
- 1:35:52Cleveland's fine broadcaster, Mr. Jimmy Dudley.
- 1:35:54I have the opportunity of working the all-star game with Jim,
- 1:35:57and I have the opportunity, just as you have now, to lean back and listen.
- 1:36:00Jim, come on, fella.
- 1:36:01Thank you very much, Al.
- 1:36:02And now it's football in the last half of the fifth inning with the score tied 2-2.
- 1:36:06Willie Mays, the giant center fielder, steps into the batter's box, a right-hand batter,
- 1:36:10and Bob Lemon is ready to work to him.
- 1:36:12Mays in the first inning, popped out, and walked his second trip to the plate in the third.
- 1:36:17Here's the windup.
- 1:36:18The first pitch, Mays swings to ground ball, the Rose in the third.
- 1:36:21Big hop taken.
- 1:36:22Here's the third at first, and Mays is out.
- 1:36:24Mays grounding out.
- 1:36:25Rose in two works, 5-3 in case she is going along with us.
- 1:36:32Bob Lemon, one of the most feared pitchers in the American League.
- 1:36:35A boy who keeps that ball low all the time.
- 1:36:38The umpires will tell you that he is one of the roughest in the business to call,
- 1:36:42and the other fact that most of his stuff is from the waist right down to the knee.
- 1:36:48Hank Thompson, left-hand batter, steps in, takes a strike with a fastball,
- 1:36:51nicking the inside corner knee-high.
- 1:36:54Thompson in the first inning, grounded out, the first baseman assisted,
- 1:36:57but singled into right field in the third.
- 1:37:03The windup. The next pitch is outside.
- 1:37:05The count even up.
- 1:37:06Ball one and strike one.
- 1:37:07The score tied, Cleveland 2, New York 2.
- 1:37:10The Indians broke on top, scoring two runs in the first inning.
- 1:37:13The Giants coming back to tie it up in the last of the third.
- 1:37:17Bob Fielders playing Thompson to pull, deep and well around to right.
- 1:37:21The one-and-one pitch, a swing and a miss.
- 1:37:23He was out in front with it.
- 1:37:24Strike two.
- 1:37:25Ball one and strike two to count.
- 1:37:29Lemon has given up a total of seven hits.
- 1:37:32Magni, five.
- 1:37:36The entire World Series between these two ball clubs promises to be just the same way.
- 1:37:40Nip and tuck all the way.
- 1:37:42Either team capable of coming up with an attack at any spot in the batting order.
- 1:37:46The one-and-two pitch.
- 1:37:47Ball two, outside, a fastball, broke away.
- 1:37:50Ball two and strike two to count on the batter.
- 1:37:55Thompson stands very deep in the batter's box.
- 1:37:59Bobby O'Hela back to the edge of the outfield grass,
- 1:38:01midway between first and second.
- 1:38:04Here's the windup and the two-two pitch.
- 1:38:06A swing and a miss.
- 1:38:07He struck him out.
- 1:38:11Thompson goes down swinging, two away, and the batter, number 20, Monty Irvin.
- 1:38:18Up twice, he is 0 for 2, fouled out his first trip in the second inning,
- 1:38:21and struck out in the third.
- 1:38:23That, by the way, was a big out for Lemon.
- 1:38:29And that a fly ball would have given them the run to put them ahead.
- 1:38:33They play him straight away.
- 1:38:35First pitch is too low.
- 1:38:37Ball one to count.
- 1:38:40Al Smith deep in left field and straight away.
- 1:38:48Here's the windup.
- 1:38:50The next pitch is a struck cause with a curve hitting the outside corner.
- 1:38:54The strikeout on Thompson, by the way, was the fourth of the game for Bob Lemon.
- 1:38:58He has walked him in.
- 1:39:00The score is tied 2-2.
- 1:39:02You're in the last half of the fifth inning with two out and nobody on the bases.
- 1:39:05The windup and the pitch is inside, too close to the batter.
- 1:39:09The count moves to ball two and strike one.
- 1:39:12Herman Franks coaching at third base for the Giants.
- 1:39:15Freddy Fitzsimmons, one of the game's great stars of the past, at first base.
- 1:39:23They'll be deep and straight away in center field.
- 1:39:26The outfielders have a lot of room to roam in center, right center, left center.
- 1:39:30The two-and-one pitch is runner.
- 1:39:32There's the drive going deep and high out into left center.
- 1:39:34Roby moves back to step of two.
- 1:39:36Waiting as he snaps the glove, he makes the catch and the side is retired.
- 1:39:40Herman giving the drop a throw with a long fly ball into deep center.
- 1:39:45Three up and three down for the Giants.
- 1:39:47No runs, no hits.
- 1:39:49And at the end of five, the score is Cleveland 2-New York 2.
- 1:39:55Leo Beroscia of the New York Giants, certainly one of the game's great leaders.
- 1:39:59You know what he says about leadership?
- 1:40:01Leo says, if you want to be a leader, you've got to look the part.
- 1:40:05And you can't look the part without a fresh, good-looking shave.
- 1:40:08For my money, there's only one way to get a good-looking shave every time up.
- 1:40:12And that's with shaving cream and a modern Gillette razor.
- 1:40:22Well, at the halfway mark, in the five innings, the ground crew now are grooming the infield.
- 1:40:27While they're so doing it, let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:40:32This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 1:40:36WGM, your exclusive World Series station, Chicago.
- 1:40:47Back at the Polo Grounds in New York City, the scene of the playing of the first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 1:40:53Going into the first half of the sixth inning, it will be Vic Wirtz leading off for Cleveland.
- 1:41:00The five innings, Turtles on the ball game, Cleveland 2 runs, five hits, no errors.
- 1:41:04The Giants 2 runs, seven hits, one error.
- 1:41:07Western throw to second, David Williams over the top, to Thompson and back to the pitcher on the mound.
- 1:41:13The veteran, Sal McKee, drawing that all-important assignment of hailing the first game.
- 1:41:21Facing him now is Vic Wirtz in the batter's box. He has two for two.
- 1:41:25A triple in the first inning to drive in two runs, a single in the fourth to lead off. He was left-handed.
- 1:41:30First pitch, he swings and wraps a line drive into right field, another base hit.
- 1:41:34Coming over fast forward is Don Mueller. The throw is to first base. It's over the first base from Ted.
- 1:41:38And it gets away from the catcher. First base is to second, makes the turn there and holds up.
- 1:41:43Western chases for the ball, back to the stands.
- 1:41:47Mueller's throw surprised everybody.
- 1:41:50Whitey Laflin, the first baseman, lead for it. He had no chance to get it.
- 1:41:54And it's an error charged to Don Mueller on the throw.
- 1:41:58He's taken the works into right field and a throwing error charged to Don Mueller, his second error of the ball game.
- 1:42:08It was a rough break on him. And you sort of hate to see a ball charged with an error when he's thinking.
- 1:42:14And that's just what Don Mueller was doing. Realizing that Wirtz is a slow man, he figured him to overrun.
- 1:42:20And thought he might have a chance to get him back at first base.
- 1:42:23And it was a bad throw and he is charged with an error.
- 1:42:26Wirtz is on second with nobody out in the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:42:29And stepping into the batter's box is Dave Philly.
- 1:42:33Philly has switched it in, batting left. Takes ball on outside.
- 1:42:40Philly came to the Indians last winter after batting better than 300 with the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 1:42:47He's done a fine job as one of the better defensive ball players in baseball today.
- 1:42:52That is not a rough luck in the hitting department.
- 1:42:57Here's the stretch by Magli. Quick looks to run it back at second.
- 1:43:00The pitch is all too high and outside. Doing no count on the batter.
- 1:43:06Philly has been up twice. He flied to right field in the first inning.
- 1:43:09Round it out, pitch it to first in the fourth inning.
- 1:43:16But you never know where it's going to come from.
- 1:43:18These two teams are tough from the top to the bottom in the batting order.
- 1:43:23Wirtz has a good lead off second with nobody out. He'll play it safe.
- 1:43:27The outfielders are pulled around toward right for Philly.
- 1:43:30They turn up in pitch. He swings and pals it back to the screen.
- 1:43:33The count is two and one. Ball two and strike one.
- 1:43:40Warming up in the giant bullpen, the left-hander down little and right-hander, Bob Dissom.
- 1:43:47Ready for action in case manager Leo DeRosha should need them.
- 1:43:51Ed Dress, the Indians' first-base coach, shouting down to Philly.
- 1:43:54Get hold of that ball.
- 1:43:56The turn one pitch. On its way, he swings and grounds one off.
- 1:43:58It hits his glove. Magli scrambles, picks it up, can't make a play at third.
- 1:44:02Throws to first and Philly is out.
- 1:44:04Wirtz moving to third base.
- 1:44:10Good recovery on the part of Sal Magli. He knocked that ball down with his glove,
- 1:44:14scrambled for it, and got Philly, a fast man, at first.
- 1:44:16Alvin Doth, the giant captain, and shortstop in talking to Magli.
- 1:44:21Now Weston goes out. Make sure that he is all right.
- 1:44:24One away in the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:44:28Philly has grounded out twice.
- 1:44:31Now to the pitcher.
- 1:44:34The batter is George Strickland.
- 1:44:37Shortstop.
- 1:44:39He's in the second inning and grounded out to the shortstop in the fourth.
- 1:44:47Went away, a man unfist.
- 1:44:49Left side of the infield is pulled in a bit.
- 1:44:51Now the right side in about halfway.
- 1:44:53First pitch to Strickland. He swings and fouls it off to the right,
- 1:44:55coming back into the stands out of play.
- 1:44:58Strike one.
- 1:45:00Strickland was injured the first week in July
- 1:45:06at Yankee Stadium in a game against New York.
- 1:45:09Marlon Stewart, New York Yankee pitcher,
- 1:45:13hit him at third base trying for a force play.
- 1:45:16The ball deflected off the third baseman's glove and broke his jaw.
- 1:45:20He was out about a month.
- 1:45:22Here's the windup.
- 1:45:24Next pitch is too high.
- 1:45:26Ball one and strike one to count on George Strickland.
- 1:45:31Infield in, they'll try to cut this run off at the plate.
- 1:45:35Magley, of course, hoping to make Strickland hit the ball into the dirt.
- 1:45:39One out.
- 1:45:41The score is tied, two and two.
- 1:45:43Warts leading away from third.
- 1:45:45The next pitch, a swing and a foul tip.
- 1:45:49Getting past the catcher and coming back to the screen,
- 1:45:51it is now ball one and strike two.
- 1:45:59Magley, while winning 14 ball games,
- 1:46:02losing only six during the regular season,
- 1:46:04proved to be DeRosha's stop pitcher,
- 1:46:07that pitcher for the big, all-important game.
- 1:46:11Thus he drew the assignment for this first game of the World Series.
- 1:46:15Antonelli, of course, was the big winner for the Giants.
- 1:46:19In action now, the one and two pitch, a swing and a fly ball hit into short left center.
- 1:46:24Alvin Barker's going back for it.
- 1:46:25He's under now and makes the catch.
- 1:46:27Warts holding up at third base.
- 1:46:29The score and they're two gone.
- 1:46:44That, another fine-touch ball player going back to take charge of that fly ball in short left center,
- 1:46:52would have been trouble for Mays or Marty Irvin.
- 1:46:57So Warts is on third, they're two gone, and now it takes the base hit.
- 1:47:01No longer will the sacrifice fly, the fly.
- 1:47:05And it is left to Jim Hegan, the Indian stretcher.
- 1:47:08Up twice, in the second inning he popped out.
- 1:47:11In the fourth he popped out.
- 1:47:13Right hand batter.
- 1:47:15First pitch to him is ball one, too low.
- 1:47:23Magley, being very cautious,
- 1:47:26a pitcher who would waste his fastball and then make you go for the curve.
- 1:47:30Ball on the count, end of the windup.
- 1:47:32The next pitch is swung and a ground ball down the third base line.
- 1:47:34Knocked down by the third baseman, up with it, the ball, a 13-pound.
- 1:47:38Beautiful recovery.
- 1:47:46A fine recovery on the part of Hank Thompson.
- 1:47:48That ball was right over the bag.
- 1:47:50He knocked it down, scrambled for it in foul territory, and got his man with a fine-at-retro.
- 1:47:55And Hegan is very fast.
- 1:47:57So the Indians get no runs.
- 1:47:59They had one hit, there was one giant error, and one man was left on the bases.
- 1:48:04So we go into the last half of the sixth inning with a score.
- 1:48:08We've been to New York, too.
- 1:48:12I wonder how many of you baseball fans know why third base is called the hot corner,
- 1:48:16or how the bullpen got its name.
- 1:48:19Well, you'll find the answers in the new Gillette World Series record book.
- 1:48:23But, fans, that's only a patch on the raft of other facts and figures in this handy reference book.
- 1:48:28It's 112 pages at the cram with the scores of every past World Series game,
- 1:48:33records of every player, diagrams of all big league parts, basic rules, scoring instructions,
- 1:48:38a dictionary of baseball slang, and a wealth of other inside baseball facts.
- 1:48:43To get your copy free before tomorrow's game, ask for the new Gillette Super Speed Racer Set, $1.
- 1:48:49A record book attached, it's worth plenty, but costs you nothing extra.
- 1:49:00Well, the Indians had something started there, but failed to carry through,
- 1:49:04as Tom Magley buckled down and closed the door on Vic Works, who let off with a single,
- 1:49:08and moved up on an error.
- 1:49:10Moved to third, as Philly grounded out, but failed to score, as Strickland and Hegan went down.
- 1:49:16Now the Giants come up, ready for action in the last half of the sixth inning with the score tied.
- 1:49:212-2, Davey Williams, second baseman for the Giants, steps in, right hand batter.
- 1:49:30Clement hitching up the trousers, little habit, but he's had all of his baseball career.
- 1:49:37O'Kage, the sign from Hegan, outfield is a straightaway, the pitch to Williams is ball one, too low.
- 1:49:49Ball on the count.
- 1:49:53There's the windup, and his next pitch is swung on a ground ball to the shortstop,
- 1:49:56big hop, taken by Strickland, a throw to first, and Williams is out.
- 1:50:00Williams grounding out, Strickland, two words.
- 1:50:06The running field is in excellent condition, McDonough has done a marvelous job of keeping this field ready for the World Series.
- 1:50:16And it's seen a lot of action, don't forget, throughout the regular season.
- 1:50:20One away, nobody on, West Westrom is the batter.
- 1:50:23The Giants catcher has two for two.
- 1:50:27First midterm, he swings and wraps a line drive in the center field,
- 1:50:29Dolby coming over hard is under it and makes the catch.
- 1:50:32Two away, Westrom, lining to Dolby in center.
- 1:50:39And Larry Dolby really put that one away out there in center field,
- 1:50:42just as they tell you to do it in the Gillette World Series Record Book.
- 1:50:45A special section gives inside tips on winning play and lots of other dope.
- 1:50:49That's great meat for all you baseball folks from beginning little liggers to drizzle fans.
- 1:50:54A World Series Record Book is yours absolutely free.
- 1:50:57Remember it comes attached to the new Gillette one piece razor at the regular price.
- 1:51:04A good hand for Sal Magley as he steps in, two out, and nobody on.
- 1:51:08He takes a strike over the outside corner.
- 1:51:11Paid with a bunt motion but let the pitch go by.
- 1:51:15Magley has stuck out twice.
- 1:51:17Then his next pitch,
- 1:51:25and he's down again in order.
- 1:51:28Magley out, first baseman of pitching.
- 1:51:31And for New York in the six, no runs, no hits, nothing across.
- 1:51:35And at the end of six, the score, Cleveland two, New York two.
- 1:51:41Say hey, that's Willie Mays, the giant wonder boy as he sparks the Giants.
- 1:51:45Neal DeRosha says Willie is the greatest player he's ever seen.
- 1:51:49The last day of the season he quenched the hitting frown,
- 1:51:52and he hit just 182 in his six previous World Series games.
- 1:51:56That's the kind of work wild dope you get in the Gillette World Series Record Book.
- 1:52:01And it makes baseball much more enjoyable in season and out.
- 1:52:04Better get your free copy right away.
- 1:52:13Well these two pitches have really settled down to their business.
- 1:52:16Magley gave up two runs in the first inning,
- 1:52:19and has hung the horse collar on the Indians.
- 1:52:22Clement was tagged for two runs in the third to tie up the score.
- 1:52:29Here in the Mutual Broadcast booth today, we're mighty proud of this little fact.
- 1:52:33This is the 5,000th baseball broadcast by the Armed Forces Radio Service
- 1:52:38to the men and women stationed overseas.
- 1:52:41It's estimated that our listening audience during the series,
- 1:52:44about 110 million people. Big Al, that's a lot of people.
- 1:52:49Man, I tell you frankly, I'd like to have a hot dog session for that many people.
- 1:52:53Yeah, no kidding.
- 1:52:55All right, it's play ball in the first half of the seventh inning.
- 1:52:57Lemon leads out, he swings on the first pitch and pops it up right by second base.
- 1:53:01Alvin Doth, shortstop, is under it. He has it for the first out.
- 1:53:07Lemon popped it out.
- 1:53:11Doth is certainly one of the great players in this series.
- 1:53:15He has played previously in 12 World Series games.
- 1:53:18The Indians remember him, of course, in the 1948 World Series.
- 1:53:22He's a member of the Boston Braves.
- 1:53:25And they've seen a lot of him in spring training.
- 1:53:28Here's Al Smith, the leadoff batter, number 32.
- 1:53:32Swings on the first pitch, it's a ground ball to the third baseman, Thompson.
- 1:53:34Caps it nicely, the bullet first and Smith is out.
- 1:53:41Smith, one of the surprises of the 1954 season for the Indians,
- 1:53:46came to spring training more or less for the ride.
- 1:53:49But they got a look at him, he got a break, and he remained in the lineup.
- 1:53:53It's been a great help to Al Lopez and his tribe this year.
- 1:53:57They're two out, and the batter is Bobby Avila.
- 1:54:00He has one out of three, a single, in the first inning.
- 1:54:04Right hand batter takes ball one high and inside.
- 1:54:08Little Mexican pepper pot from Vera Cruz.
- 1:54:11Proud and joy of the folks down in Mexico.
- 1:54:15And by the way, he now is an owner of a ball club.
- 1:54:17He owns the Mexico City Reds.
- 1:54:21Next pitch turn is outside and lower curve ball breaking sharply.
- 1:54:25Ball to no strikes.
- 1:54:35Doing nothing on the batter.
- 1:54:36They're two out and nobody on.
- 1:54:37The outfield playing Avila straight away, hits to all fields.
- 1:54:41Here's the windup.
- 1:54:42The next pitch is swung in and a line drive to Thompson at third.
- 1:54:45He's out.
- 1:54:47Avila, line two, and Thompson at third base.
- 1:54:54And the fans are really getting a big thrill out of this,
- 1:54:56as the two pitchers really knuckle down.
- 1:54:59For the Indians in the seventh, no runs, no hits, nothing at all.
- 1:55:02And they're going to the last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:55:05The score is Cleveland 2, New York 2.
- 1:55:10Ladies and gentlemen, Gillette presents the sharpest edges ever honed.
- 1:55:17To look sharp, every time you say the truth.
- 1:55:21To feel sharp, and be on the ball.
- 1:55:24Just be sharp.
- 1:55:26Use your left blue blade for the quick perspective shades of all.
- 1:55:31Gillette blue blades are made to fit your razor to a T.
- 1:55:37They're double edged, black and flat.
- 1:55:40For real economy.
- 1:55:42To look sharp, every time you say the truth.
- 1:55:46To feel sharp, and be on the ball.
- 1:55:49Just be sharp.
- 1:55:51Use your left blue blade for the quick perspective shades of all.
- 1:55:59Gillette blue blades and handed dispensers are 20 for 98, 10 for 49.
- 1:56:10The seventh inning, the last half coming up, at the Polo Ground, New York.
- 1:56:14The home of the Giants, champion of the National League.
- 1:56:20The lucky seventh inning, a tradition in baseball all these many great years.
- 1:56:27Leading off for the Giants, Freddie Loughman, lay at the top of the batting order.
- 1:56:34Loughman has won out of three in the third inning and scored the first Giants.
- 1:56:39He scored a two and two. Loughman, ready for work, walks into the windup.
- 1:56:46The first pitch is a strike call. The ball drops down very quickly.
- 1:56:54The fellow at one time played the outfield, died the infield.
- 1:56:58The pitching became one of the greats.
- 1:57:00The pitch is swung on, outtripped into the dirt.
- 1:57:02The pitch is feet by Loughman. The count is two.
- 1:57:09Loughman is recognized as one of the team's fine competitors.
- 1:57:16The two-ball crowd started out the 1954 season in training in Arizona.
- 1:57:23They traveled back from Arizona to their respective trees and lakes and now meeting here in the fall.
- 1:57:33The count strikes you on the bat.
- 1:57:36The pitch is swung on and a half.
- 1:57:38To a feeler on the second up, taken by the second baseman, the third up first, and Loughman is out.
- 1:57:43Loughman is taking out a feeler to score three.
- 1:57:53Loughman has retired eight men in a row, and Magley has retired six in a row.
- 1:58:02Then the last half of the inning is scored tight.
- 1:58:06Alvin Dough steps in.
- 1:58:09The pitch turn is ball one, high and inside.
- 1:58:17Hence, where the special aid head gear and their bat.
- 1:58:26Mindful of their old field helmet.
- 1:58:28The pitch is swung on.
- 1:58:29A third pops it up.
- 1:58:30The third base out of the field goes in, moving quick in front of the Indian dugout.
- 1:58:34And he has it. Almost misjudged it as he's looking up into the ground out to out.
- 1:58:45I know that Rosen is not traveling on the full speed.
- 1:58:50That leg is still bumping quite a bit.
- 1:58:52Has a full muscle.
- 1:58:54It's too difficult for him to move quickly and very fast.
- 1:58:59So they're two, nobody on, and he's on the other stepping in.
- 1:59:03He has one out of three and the score to run.
- 1:59:05Left hand batter, he takes a strike.
- 1:59:07A fast ball to the inside corner.
- 1:59:11Talking to Indian pitchers, while they have all the respect in the world for Willie Mays,
- 1:59:16they fear this boy, Mueller.
- 1:59:19Next pitch is swung on and hit fouled out the back of the baseline, outside the bag.
- 1:59:24Foul strike two.
- 1:59:26There's a ground hugger and a ripper that almost stayed in there fair.
- 1:59:31Got to go over that back, remember?
- 1:59:33Can hit it, over any cost.
- 1:59:37Umpire Charlie Berry on the first base, fouled it.
- 1:59:42He's strike two.
- 1:59:46Two-prick and league umpire on the first base side.
- 1:59:51And out in right field is Larry Natt.
- 1:59:53Next pitch is joined up.
- 1:59:54The next pitch is swung on and a line driver thinks into left field.
- 1:59:57But just shot and fair.
- 1:59:58The base hitter.
- 1:59:59Mueller makes the turn at first.
- 2:00:01Smith's throw back to the inside.
- 2:00:02Holds him there.
- 2:00:03Havashtuck, and it brings up Willie Mays.
- 2:00:12That little incident right there will give you some idea of why the Indian pitchers and others have such respect for Don Mueller.
- 2:00:19With two strikes on him, he whips one to the opposite field.
- 2:00:24Willie Mays, looking for his first world-fiery hit, stepped in.
- 2:00:28He's got to go for two, I think.
- 2:00:29He walked in the third inning.
- 2:00:31Right hand batter.
- 2:00:34The dynamic ball player.
- 2:00:38First pitch to a bow and outside a curve ball, breaking down and away.
- 2:00:45Mays is the batting champion of the National League.
- 2:00:48One of the most publicized young ball players in the history of the game.
- 2:00:54Number 24.
- 2:00:56Smith is deep and straight away in left.
- 2:00:58They'll be deep and straight away in center.
- 2:01:02Don Mueller on first with two out.
- 2:01:04Fast half for the seventh.
- 2:01:05The score is tied.
- 2:01:07Demons pitch is swung on and fouled back to the stands out of play.
- 2:01:11The count is even up.
- 2:01:12Ball one and strike one.
- 2:01:19Yes, sir, there's always plenty of excitement at the old ball yard.
- 2:01:24And this one is no exception.
- 2:01:25The first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 2:01:29The Indians versus the Giants.
- 2:01:36Ball one and strike one to count.
- 2:01:38Demons checks for a sign.
- 2:01:40Draft hand down on his knee.
- 2:01:41Up with a stretch now.
- 2:01:42Quick looks to runner at first.
- 2:01:43The pitch is ball two, outside and low.
- 2:01:46Two and one to count.
- 2:01:49Indian pitchers, of course, remember Willie Mays from spring training,
- 2:01:52but he is entirely different Willie Mays now.
- 2:01:56No longer does he go for that bad ball.
- 2:02:01Two and one to count.
- 2:02:03There's the pitch.
- 2:02:04Swung on and the ground ball is hit to the shelf.
- 2:02:06Strickland up with it.
- 2:02:07Close to Avila covering second.
- 2:02:08Mueller's force for side is retired.
- 2:02:11Strickland to Avila, forcing Mueller for the third out.
- 2:02:16And in the seventh inning for the Giants, no runs.
- 2:02:20One hit, their first hit since the fourth inning, by the way.
- 2:02:23One man left.
- 2:02:25And at the end of seventh inning, they score Cleveland two, New York two.
- 2:02:34A moment ago we were talking about Alvin Dock.
- 2:02:36Well, the last time he was up, just in this inning, they got him out.
- 2:02:40A pop bow to Al Rosen.
- 2:02:42The first time that the Indians have gotten Dock out today.
- 2:02:45Yes, Mr. Dock came into this series with 12 games under his belt
- 2:02:49and a hefty batting average of 292.
- 2:02:52I notice in the Gillette World Series record book that this tops even the mighty Roger Hornsby's average.
- 2:02:57Got your book yet?
- 2:02:59It's attached to the Gillette one-piece razor set, for which you pay only the regular price.
- 2:03:04The book is free.
- 2:03:21Now we head into the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:03:24The score tag, Cleveland two, New York two.
- 2:03:26Larry Doby will be leading off for the Indians.
- 2:03:28Here is the official attendance at today's ballgame.
- 2:03:3252,751.
- 2:03:3752,751.
- 2:03:40A fine crowd to get the World Series off.
- 2:03:43And as the experts have said, this promises to be one of the greatest World Series of all time in attendance.
- 2:03:52And returns, of course, financially for the players in the league.
- 2:03:56All right, Doby steps in, Magley's first fixture, and he swings and grounds it foul down the first baseline, out of play.
- 2:04:04Doby has one out of three, a single his last time up, single in the right field in the fifth inning.
- 2:04:12He was one of the top hitters in the 1948 World Series, the Indians versus the Boston Braves.
- 2:04:18And of course was the RBI champion of the American League this year, home run champion too.
- 2:04:24Here is ball one, high and outside.
- 2:04:27A fastball got away from Magley, took off.
- 2:04:32Bringing a few oohs and ahs from the crowd.
- 2:04:35One in one to count.
- 2:04:40Doby clutched over the plate.
- 2:04:42When they pitch, he drops to the ground to avoid being hit.
- 2:04:45Ball two, high and inside.
- 2:04:47Another fastball.
- 2:04:49Doby really takes a toehold in the batter's box.
- 2:04:53And as the boys on the field, on the bench will say, he hounds the plate.
- 2:05:03Looks mean up there as the pitcher looks toward him.
- 2:05:07The two-one pitch, ball three, high and outside.
- 2:05:09Doby was ready to swing away on that two-and-one.
- 2:05:13It takes ball three instead.
- 2:05:14Three-and-one to count now.
- 2:05:17Outfielders both deep and well around to the right.
- 2:05:20Right side of the infield, deep.
- 2:05:22Doby first, Davey Williams with second.
- 2:05:28On back is Al Rosen.
- 2:05:31The three-one pitch, Doby swings and he misses.
- 2:05:34He's stuck two and the string is loose.
- 2:05:36Full count of three-and-two on the batter.
- 2:05:39Magley has given up six hits.
- 2:05:43Score is tied, Cleveland two, New York two.
- 2:05:48And Magley checks with a catcher, Weston.
- 2:05:53Works into the windup.
- 2:05:56And here's the playoff pitch.
- 2:05:58Ball four, inside and low.
- 2:05:59Doby works in for a walk.
- 2:06:03That is the second base on balls given up by Magley.
- 2:06:08He has two strikeouts.
- 2:06:09And again we have action down in the giant bullpen.
- 2:06:12Down middle, the left-hander, who has really been getting a work out during this game.
- 2:06:16And Mark Whissom, right-hander.
- 2:06:20As Al Rosen steps into the batter's box.
- 2:06:24Whissom and Little getting ready down in the bullpen in case they're needed.
- 2:06:28Whissom was a great help to the Giants this year, winning ten while losing only seven.
- 2:06:33Al Rosen steps in, a right-hand batter.
- 2:06:35And the first pitch to him is ball on inside and low.
- 2:06:41Doby on first, leading off with a base on balls.
- 2:06:46Tie score, two and two, first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:52Magley turns and throws to first, but Doby is back.
- 2:06:59Magley, on that particular throw, walks toward the rubber.
- 2:07:03Turns quickly and flies to the first pitch.
- 2:07:05Doby leads off.
- 2:07:06Here's the stretch.
- 2:07:07The pitch is thrown in a ground ball.
- 2:07:09Not down by a drive for shortstop.
- 2:07:11Picks it up.
- 2:07:12Second, too late.
- 2:07:13All hands are safe.
- 2:07:14And Rosen is at first base.
- 2:07:16But again, he was moving with a decided limp.
- 2:07:19And it is a base hit.
- 2:07:21An infield hit for Al Rosen.
- 2:07:23As he hit one just to the right of shortstop guard.
- 2:07:27He knocked it down with his bare hand.
- 2:07:29Tried for Doby at second, but was too late.
- 2:07:31And Rosen gets his first hit of the day.
- 2:07:37Runners on first and second, nobody out.
- 2:07:40And the batter is bit worse.
- 2:07:45Now, Lachman moves in from his position at first base.
- 2:07:49And Thompson is in close to the edge of the infield glass.
- 2:07:53Time is called, however.
- 2:07:55Westrom goes out to talk to Magley.
- 2:07:57And now, Freddie Fitzsimmons, first base coach,
- 2:08:00starts out of the giant dugout.
- 2:08:04Gets a call from Leo DeRosia, the manager.
- 2:08:06Turns and looks back to him.
- 2:08:13Umpire wearing a nap, waved in to see one of the boys warming up.
- 2:08:18Down middle, left-hander is ready and serves Marv Grissom.
- 2:08:22Big right-hander.
- 2:08:26Jack O'Connor, second base umpire, moves in.
- 2:08:29And Fitzsimmons indicates that he wants the left-hander.
- 2:08:32Down middle to come on.
- 2:08:34He has won nine and lost four this year.
- 2:08:54So that is going to be all for Sal Magley.
- 2:08:57Magley has given up eight hits.
- 2:09:00Now there's never been a no-hit performance by any pitcher in a World Series game.
- 2:09:04That's just one of the many interesting facts
- 2:09:06covered in Gillette's wonderful new World Series record book.
- 2:09:10And remember, you get it free with a one-piece Gillette rater for the regular price.
- 2:09:21Nobody out here in the first half of the eighth inning with a new pitcher coming on.
- 2:09:24So let's take a look at Magley's record.
- 2:09:27He has worked in seven innings of the game.
- 2:09:29He has given up two runs.
- 2:09:31He's leaving two men on.
- 2:09:32Should they score, they'll be charged to him.
- 2:09:34Gave up a total of eight hits.
- 2:09:36He walked two and struck out two.
- 2:09:48That's James.
- 2:09:49That Magley has given up just seven hits.
- 2:09:51Thank you, Al. Seven hits.
- 2:09:56And the new pitcher, Don Little, and Magley making the long walk from the ground
- 2:10:02two-centimeter-feet plan to the clubhouse.
- 2:10:09A picture going out of the game near the polo grounds
- 2:10:11has just about the longest walk into the dressing room of any baseball club.
- 2:10:17So Little is taking his warm-up.
- 2:10:19And while we're waiting, let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 2:10:25This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 2:10:30And this is WGN.
- 2:10:31You're about to receive World Series station, Chicago.
- 2:10:42Now back at the polo grounds in New York, the new giant pitcher, Don Little,
- 2:10:45out on the mound.
- 2:10:47Al Lopez, the Indian manager, came out to talk to Al Rosen.
- 2:10:54The runner-up first, Rosen was limping very badly when he went down the line,
- 2:10:59but evidently he is going to stay in.
- 2:11:01I know that he wants to.
- 2:11:06Don Little, the tander, is ready to work.
- 2:11:08A bowl of hits from Mount Carmel, Illinois.
- 2:11:11Five-ten, 165 pounds.
- 2:11:17Little occurred in 28 games during the run of the season
- 2:11:20and earned run average of 3.07.
- 2:11:24Left-hand pitching out against left-hand batter Vic Woods.
- 2:11:27Runners on first and second, nobody out.
- 2:11:29The first pitch by Little is ball one, high and inside a fast ball.
- 2:11:38Slender bill, but he has a well of a good pass.
- 2:11:41Rosen on first, three on second, nobody out in the first of the eight.
- 2:11:45Score tied two and two.
- 2:11:47Next pitch is a spike with a curve hitting the outside corner breaking away.
- 2:11:53Vic Woods, the Indian for the placement up there now, has the perfect day at this point.
- 2:11:58Three hits and two to the plate, triple and two singles.
- 2:12:01Go then, the Indians two runs back in the first inning.
- 2:12:05Little is ready on the pitch.
- 2:12:08A bunch of high-fives, popping through the air, but nobody can get to it.
- 2:12:11Hank Thompson, the third baseman, tried so did Little, the pitcher,
- 2:12:14but neither could reach it, and it is ball one and strike two.
- 2:12:19Well, that's a life for words.
- 2:12:21An attempted front, he popped it foul down the third pitch line.
- 2:12:26Ball one, ball one and strike two.
- 2:12:31Batter on deck is Dave Philly.
- 2:12:36Toby drew a walk.
- 2:12:38The count three and two took the ball from Rosen, single to the shut up,
- 2:12:44which was a force play on Dolby.
- 2:12:47And Rosen has given credit for the field hit.
- 2:12:50Nobody out.
- 2:12:52Little now, two for a sign.
- 2:12:57After this pitch, a look back to the runner at second.
- 2:12:59It's his 100th birthday crowd going deep out into the half-court.
- 2:13:02Here is Rosen back slow going home, and he makes a beautiful shot.
- 2:13:08And Dolby tags up at second and moving to third.
- 2:13:11What a beautiful, beautiful catch by Willie Mays.
- 2:13:36Ladies and gentlemen, for those of us who have not seen too much of amazing Willie Mays,
- 2:13:41we know now why they talk to him so very much.
- 2:13:45That was one of the most spectacular catches we have ever seen.
- 2:13:49That ball was hit to the wall in right center.
- 2:13:54Well over 400 feet away from home plate.
- 2:13:58And Mays was racing with his back turned to the right.
- 2:14:03And pulled it down over his shoulder.
- 2:14:06We're getting a pinch hit him for a foot kick.
- 2:14:09Here in the opening it is Hank Majeski.
- 2:14:12Majeski batting for a filly.
- 2:14:19And here comes 25th Simmons out of the giant dugout.
- 2:14:22There's a possibility of a new pitcher.
- 2:14:27Mal Grissom has been warming up and is ready to hit him.
- 2:14:33Yes, that is what it is going to be.
- 2:14:35And you can see Mal Grissom is being called in.
- 2:14:44Hank Majeski has a batting average of 281 for the regular season.
- 2:14:50I have a bat average that doesn't tell the entire story.
- 2:14:53The government has really been a tremendous asset to Al Lopez and his tribe this year.
- 2:15:02He has moved in to play third, last, second, and has been a great help out the plate.
- 2:15:08Many of his hits, driving and runs, have won ball games for the Indians.
- 2:15:13And now, five minutes coming into the game, we're going to get a switch in pinch hitters.
- 2:15:18Mitchell is coming out of the Indian dugout, swinging a couple of pats.
- 2:15:22And it is going to be Dale Mitchell batting for Hank Majeski.
- 2:15:28And the fans are getting a big thrill out of this battle of strategy between Al Lopez, manager of the Indians,
- 2:15:36and Leo DeRoscia, the manager of the New York Pats.
- 2:15:40But this is world series and championship strategy as well as championship play is so very important.
- 2:15:46Lopez now comes out of the dugout, and to his pinch hitter, Dale Mitchell, who is out to the left of the plate.
- 2:15:51Thirty-Fiftths seminal, he's hooked up into Bob Gerson.
- 2:15:54And there's Don Little making his exit from the team after catching one-third of an inning.
- 2:15:59It's to one man, Nick Wirtz, and Wirtz flies to Willie Mays defense and a play.
- 2:16:05This seminal is 110 and lost to the Indians.
- 2:16:10And as any giant fan will tell you, he has been a great help to the Giants.
- 2:16:17He has been in a total of 56 games.
- 2:16:23Giving you some idea, but often he has been called in from the broke end, stopped the fire, and gone and saved a campaign.
- 2:16:30So he's won 10 and lost his 7.
- 2:16:33Probably saved many more for other starting pitchers.
- 2:16:37Check your total average, 2.34.
- 2:16:402.34.
- 2:16:44Remember these two men on the plate, Dolby and Rosen, are charged to the starting pitcher, Sal Magne.
- 2:16:51So while the score is tied, leading to New York Giants 2, Magne could be the losing pitcher in this fall game.
- 2:16:59up-to-roach here is going to have men ready.
- 2:17:01He has the left-hander and the right-hander warming up in the broke end.
- 2:17:05The score tied, two in the first half of the eighth inning, one out of the head.
- 2:17:09The Indians have Dolby on the third, and Rosen on first.
- 2:17:13Darat essentially has passed the commission, and they've won the last 2.
- 2:17:22There is that lower deck.
- 2:17:30The Pacific team has got saw a round in the left as well.
- 2:17:32At 5- comprised.
- 2:17:37Mitchell has a lifetime batting average of 3 feet in egg-league play.
- 2:17:46Has not seen too much action this year.
- 2:17:49Batting average of 283, used mostly as a penchetta.
- 2:17:55Next pitch, he takes ball two inside.
- 2:17:58Almost got away from Westlakecatch.
- 2:18:03On the call, a left-hander, knuckleball, right-hander, forming a giant bullpen.
- 2:18:12First on first.
- 2:18:13Delvia's on first.
- 2:18:14Went out in the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:18:17Bento.
- 2:18:18The next pitch, ball three outside.
- 2:18:22Mitchell was ready to go for it.
- 2:18:25It held back and got its three in the thing.
- 2:18:35Mitchell stands deep in the batter's box and while he can pull, out to right field, he's capable of hitting the ball field.
- 2:18:43The next pitch, ball four high and outside and on fourth base that runs.
- 2:18:47Mitchell takes a walk.
- 2:18:48The bases are loaded.
- 2:18:50The bases are loaded.
- 2:18:53The first and most of the second, Delvia holds it third and Mitchell takes over at first base.
- 2:18:59The batter, due, has dropped his pitlin but now he is being called back and is going to get a penchetta.
- 2:19:05David Pope, number 34, is coming out for the dugout.
- 2:19:09Pope is going to hit Pope Pitlin.
- 2:19:13Pope is a rookie outfielder out from Indianapolis of the American Association.
- 2:19:20David Pope, number 294 for this year, is the Indians' in-60 ball game.
- 2:19:26Hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs.
- 2:19:29He's both fast and has a lot of promise as a coming star of the future.
- 2:19:35The PMA Association, he practically tore that pitch apart the last couple of years.
- 2:19:40He's a stand batter.
- 2:19:42Pope, that is for the second.
- 2:19:44First pitch, he's third and caps his foul on the first base line, throw back into third territory, but it has been fouled off his foot.
- 2:19:57Strike one, Delvia on third, Rosen on second, Mitchell on fifth.
- 2:20:03One out in the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:20:05The Indians and the Giants battling in the first game of the 1964 World Series tied up two and two.
- 2:20:12Pope now steps back into the batter's shot.
- 2:20:16Down near the deep, it's straight away right.
- 2:20:18Willamette pulled over, throw back center just to show you.
- 2:20:21Big ma, Gryson, right-hander.
- 2:20:25On the rubber.
- 2:20:27Works into a short windup.
- 2:20:29The pitch, foul one, a fast ball, high and outside.
- 2:20:34It's an exciting moment.
- 2:20:36You hear the call of grounds at the top.
- 2:20:38They count one and one on the batter.
- 2:20:40The Indians attempting to break it down.
- 2:20:42And Gryson, the third, Dan Hurley, trying to close the door.
- 2:20:47On deck is Jim Hegan.
- 2:20:49Here's the wingback.
- 2:20:50The next pitch, just swinging him out.
- 2:20:52Just catching the ball.
- 2:20:54That was the back two.
- 2:20:56Pope went for the fast ball.
- 2:21:06Wilhelm and McCall continue to warm up for the game.
- 2:21:09Wilhelm, the fast ball.
- 2:21:12Left-hander.
- 2:21:15This is a level for the Indians.
- 2:21:17One out.
- 2:21:18Closed the eyes on the windup.
- 2:21:20The next pitch, swung on and out into the stands.
- 2:21:22Down the left-field line, going into the second lane.
- 2:21:25Out of play.
- 2:21:27Ball one and strike two.
- 2:21:30Red Crags, in a close base, starting encouragement down to the center.
- 2:21:36And the man, Tommy Cucinello, working the coaches' backs at third base.
- 2:21:42One out.
- 2:21:45Good ball in play.
- 2:21:47Chris, the crossing, they'll be very close to the third.
- 2:21:49Here's the wingback.
- 2:21:50One of the pitchers, Red Crags.
- 2:21:53He's put him out.
- 2:22:05A left-hander's back is one of the big strikeouts of the World Series.
- 2:22:11Yet, of course, for some, there's a lot of action that can be more important than that.
- 2:22:16Striking out left-hand batter, very close, but the bases loaded.
- 2:22:27And now Jim Hegan is up.
- 2:22:28Fans are still talking about William Marys and that great catch.
- 2:22:31You know, he went right back to the right center field wall to haul down there, but I haven't worked.
- 2:22:35You'll find the diagram of the photo of Brown showing distances to all fences on page 26 of the New Genet World Series record book.
- 2:22:43Be sure you get yours.
- 2:22:45All right, Jim Hegan is up.
- 2:22:47The first pitch coming on ten.
- 2:22:49Ball one high and inside.
- 2:22:55Ball in the count.
- 2:22:56They're two out.
- 2:22:57The bases are loaded.
- 2:22:58Third tie, two and two.
- 2:23:01Markham, big right-hander, relief pitcher for the banks.
- 2:23:04There's the pitch.
- 2:23:05Hegan swings and pops it up.
- 2:23:07Off to the right of the pitch.
- 2:23:08Weston makes him point.
- 2:23:09He can't get to it.
- 2:23:10It's back onto the top of the dugout.
- 2:23:13Good run by Weston, but he couldn't reach it.
- 2:23:16And the count is even.
- 2:23:17Ball one and strike one.
- 2:23:19Hegan hits that ball right on the fist and cracks his back.
- 2:23:24That boy brings him another piece of wood.
- 2:23:28One and one, the count on the batter.
- 2:23:31Jim Hegan, he is 0 for 3.
- 2:23:35They'll be let off for the walk.
- 2:23:37Weston singled off the shortstop's hand.
- 2:23:41Works by deep to center.
- 2:23:43And Mitchell walks, batting for Nogetski.
- 2:23:47The bases are loaded with two out.
- 2:23:49Here's the wind up.
- 2:23:51And the pitch. Hegan swings and pops it back out of play.
- 2:23:54Strike two.
- 2:23:55Ball one and strike two to count.
- 2:24:00And now with the count in favor of the pitcher, Weston, south to the pan.
- 2:24:04Walks out to talk to Grissom.
- 2:24:08Pats him on the seat of the pants.
- 2:24:12They're two out.
- 2:24:16The spare time.
- 2:24:17The Indians got two runs in the first.
- 2:24:20The Giants tied it up in the last of the third.
- 2:24:22First half of the eighth inning.
- 2:24:24The runners move off.
- 2:24:25They're ready to go with the crack of the bat.
- 2:24:26They're two out.
- 2:24:29Grissom's still watching, go big, closely.
- 2:24:32All right, the one and two pitch.
- 2:24:33Foul back.
- 2:24:34Hegan got a piece of it to stay alive.
- 2:24:45Boy, that was a foul ball.
- 2:24:46It came right back into the press box in the run of the cameras.
- 2:24:51One of the television cameras on duty covering today's ball game.
- 2:24:56One and two count.
- 2:24:57Mitchell on first.
- 2:24:58Rosen on second.
- 2:24:59Doby on third.
- 2:25:00The two out.
- 2:25:01The outfield is a straightaway.
- 2:25:04Grissom taking plenty of time, cautiously.
- 2:25:06Into the wind up now.
- 2:25:08The pitch is swung and the ball's a drive going deep high.
- 2:25:10Out into left field.
- 2:25:11Really amazing.
- 2:25:12Back to the wall.
- 2:25:13A rather money-o-gum.
- 2:25:16Hegan's going to have it for the out.
- 2:25:20Monty Edmonds standing in front of the 315 pitch mark.
- 2:25:23Right on the warming pass in front of the wall.
- 2:25:25Pulled it down.
- 2:25:34And fanfare is a great, great thick of the new pitching.
- 2:25:38John Little and Ralph Grissom closing the door on the Indians.
- 2:25:42They get no runs.
- 2:25:43They had one hit.
- 2:25:45There were two bases on balls and three men left.
- 2:25:51And going into the last half of the eighth inning, the score is Cleveland 2, New York 2.
- 2:25:58Fans, let's face it.

- 2:26:48Now, here comes the second pitch.
- 2:26:51Now, we're standing.
- 2:26:53Number three, Shady.
- 2:26:55Now, three.
- 2:26:58Well, after that great bit of pitching, Mal Grissom has a ball game on his hands.
- 2:27:03Man's up facing. There's nothing that can make your alarm clock sound like sweet music.
- 2:27:08But when it's hard to get underway, a good Gillette Wake Up shave will help you get into action.
- 2:27:13Yes, sir, there's plenty of lip packed into a shaving cream shave with today's new Gillette Super Speed Razor.
- 2:27:20Now, if you haven't tried today's Gillette Super Speed Razor, you're missing something really great.
- 2:27:25You change blades in a flash and just rinse it to clean.
- 2:27:30And it's double that for extra convenience at the carnival.
- 2:27:34That's right, $1 million. And it keeps traveling six times through Blade Dispenser.
- 2:27:39And while they last, you get the new Gillette World Series Record Book III, a great little book that helps you get more fun out of baseball all year long.
- 2:27:48That takes Al Magley out of the game. It is now Mal Grissom's ball game to win, to lose.
- 2:28:06Changes in the Indian lineup at Shot Top. Sam Denty. Sam Denty is a Shot Top for the Indians, and Hope goes into right field.
- 2:28:16Dave Hope in right, and Dick Chook. Denty playing first World Series game.
- 2:28:24The batter for the Giants is Henry Thompson, the third baseman.
- 2:28:28One and a half-turn batter, one and a half-turn on our side.
- 2:28:32Indians had a glorious opportunity. Hinks Holtie Cap is on it.
- 2:28:35And it's still a tie game, but the Giants now are back.
- 2:28:40Thompson has one of the three, a second of the game.
- 2:28:43And he's going to hit the next hit, and it's still two-fifths of the right field.
- 2:28:46And that bat is going to be fouled, just on the wrong side of the white chalkboard.
- 2:28:52Foul, bat, hit.
- 2:28:58Like one of these 52,751 fans are watching that ball every, every inch of the way.
- 2:29:07The shot-ticking sore withers, Hope in right field, with bat in the number seven.
- 2:29:10The next hit, six-foul, down the first base line, out of play, the
- 2:29:13And Denty, with the finger-sharp stab, is hit in the number five.
- 2:29:13number six-foul.
- 2:29:21All right, lemon is ready. All one and a half-turn to count.
- 2:29:21Hello.
- 2:29:25Hello.
- 2:29:41We're hearing some of an infection right now. Denty, it's short.
- 2:29:56Here's the windup. The next hit, swung on in a half-turn, up foul, hit back of the play, coming back into the stands, out of play.
- 2:30:02Egan shot it back four, but no chance to reach it.
- 2:30:05Denty, in four-one and strike two.
- 2:30:11That field is pulled around to that right.
- 2:30:14Johnson filling the crowd with a wallop off the right field wall, but foul.
- 2:30:21Johnson, Nevada, on deck is Monteer, then.
- 2:30:27The next hit, eight-hit.
- 2:30:35The next hit is coming outside, ball two, even up, two-hundreds and a half, on in Hank Johnson, third base line.
- 2:30:45The wind is still strong, coming out of the south-east, going across from third to first.
- 2:30:53Hit foul down the first base line, field it by a third-hand man, a one-hand shot.
- 2:31:03It's a battle now between Bob Griffin and Bob Lemon.
- 2:31:09And certainly, you have to give a big pat on the back to me on the left.
- 2:31:14The energy, ball in the left, down middle, got left, and left, got the left side.
- 2:31:23To Johnson, he's ball three, outside, and the swing is out.
- 2:31:27Go count of three and two.
- 2:31:38There's the windup, and the big pitch is all four, high enough fast.
- 2:31:46Johnson coming through the base on balls.
- 2:31:50That is the third walk, given by the linemen.
- 2:31:53And the batter is Monteer, even.
- 2:31:55Even is 0 for three, fouled out, and fired out.
- 2:32:00He's trying to third base close up, comes into turn.
- 2:32:08Now we have action out in the end, both hands, Ray Norlesky, rookie right-hander,
- 2:32:13and Al Newhouse, trying to warming up.
- 2:32:16Who has it?
- 2:32:18Ray Norlesky.
- 2:32:20First side, turn it over to the giant, have a runner on first, with nobody else.
- 2:32:24Comes from the base runner.
- 2:32:26The batter, Bundy Irvin, right-hand batter, starts over the plate.
- 2:32:30Rosen moving around the grass.
- 2:32:32The pitcher goes to front, right out in front of the play, a beauty.
- 2:32:34Hegan is up with a 10-point play at second.
- 2:32:36Goes to a field, a cover, a first, and Irvin has gotten a perfect factor play.
- 2:32:41As pretty a front as you want to see, he jumps right out in front of the base.
- 2:32:46No chance to play armor runner at stuff in a fall, a perfect factor play.
- 2:32:49One gone, and the batter.
- 2:32:54First out, 2-4, capture to the second baseman, 7.
- 2:32:59So now it's a runner on second, one away, and baby Wiggins, step 10, he is up to three.
- 2:33:05He's down to about three times.
- 2:33:08Right hand batter, hits ball one, outside and low.
- 2:33:11Ball on the count.
- 2:33:15Now the giants have a right-hander warming up in the boat.
- 2:33:18Number 49, knuckleball, Hara Holhelm.
- 2:33:23They want him out there in case they get down there,
- 2:33:26and about whether they have to use a pinpitter.
- 2:33:29Remember, no case at this time.
- 2:33:31He's down, ball one.
- 2:33:33The pitcher, ball two, outside and low.
- 2:33:36Two and no count.
- 2:33:39Hank Thompson, a fast man, is on second.
- 2:33:42The outfield, pulled around, dropped left.
- 2:33:45Williams.
- 2:33:54Ball to no stretch.
- 2:33:57Batter on deck is western.
- 2:34:01Then it has his hand up to the stretch now.
- 2:34:03Look back to the runner.
- 2:34:05The pitcher's swung on the ground ball to the left side of the infield.
- 2:34:07Dosen comes in, takes it.
- 2:34:09The runner's holding it second.
- 2:34:10Williams is out on the close, close play.
- 2:34:16Hiding by a step, works to him, leaning into the infield.
- 2:34:19For that throw, that Williams, just by a step, a fraction of a step,
- 2:34:24they're two gone.
- 2:34:25The runner is still at second, and the batter is west-west from.
- 2:34:31Williams going out, rows into works by three.
- 2:34:36This broadcast coming to you from the Polo Grounds in New York City,
- 2:34:39the hall of the National League Champion New York Giants.
- 2:34:43The first game of the 1954 series, and the first is an indicator
- 2:34:49of what the others are to be.
- 2:34:51We'll be happy.
- 2:34:52The score is tied two and two.
- 2:34:55Fast to the eighth.
- 2:34:56Two out.
- 2:34:57The Giants have a runner at second.
- 2:34:59Hegan and Lemon had a little conference out there,
- 2:35:02midway between the mound and the plate.
- 2:35:05Weston has been a surprise in three trips to the plate, he has two hits,
- 2:35:09two singles in the lead.
- 2:35:12Right-hand batter, Lemon checks the runner back at second.
- 2:35:17First pitch, Baldwin outside, a curve breaking wide of the plate.
- 2:35:23Baldwin to count on Weston.
- 2:35:26They'll pitch carefully at Weston with the pitcher due next.
- 2:35:33And on second leads away, the pitch Weston swings and misses.
- 2:35:36He went for the slider.
- 2:35:38Strike one.
- 2:35:39Ball one and strike one to count.
- 2:35:45A lot of the old timers will tell you that a slider is just a nickel curve,
- 2:35:49but not so in the case of Mr. Bob Lemon, who really explodes that thing
- 2:35:52when it breaks away.
- 2:35:54Little sharp break-up.
- 2:35:58Up in position, Lemon backs off the rubber.
- 2:36:01Weston steps out.
- 2:36:03Count is even one and one, a tense moment in the last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:36:07Thompson, the base runner at second, ready to travel.
- 2:36:11The outfielder's pulled around to the left.
- 2:36:14Up in position, Lemon looks back to the runner.
- 2:36:17The pitcher's swung in on a high pop-ball as he's back at the plate.
- 2:36:20Hegan coming back, he understands that he will not be able to get it.
- 2:36:23He drops onto the screen out of play.
- 2:36:33A large area gives the catchers and other players plenty of room to travel
- 2:36:38with foul balls.
- 2:36:40Third base and back to the plate.
- 2:36:43Whitey Loughlin, the leadoff batter and the man on deck for the Giants,
- 2:36:46calls Weston over to the second.
- 2:36:49Thompson for a few seconds.
- 2:36:51You know, these ballplayers are always working with their business,
- 2:36:55thinking all the time.
- 2:36:57The man on deck, like Whitey Loughlin, here with the pitcher,
- 2:37:00maybe he detects a little motion.
- 2:37:02It might give away a curveball or a fastball.
- 2:37:04So he passes it on to his teammate, the man who happens to be up there
- 2:37:07in the batter's box.
- 2:37:09That's what makes the championship play the kind you see when the teams
- 2:37:14reach the autumn classic, the World Series.
- 2:37:18One into the count, the next pitch fouled back to the screen out of play,
- 2:37:22and the count remains.
- 2:37:24Ball one and stack two.
- 2:37:26There are two out, and the last half will be played winning.
- 2:37:28Run it up to Thompson.
- 2:37:31And the ballgame is passed to New York, too.
- 2:37:35Thompson left the box, will sacrifice the second,
- 2:37:38but remains there, fully grounded out.
- 2:37:44Thompson taking three for the nine.
- 2:37:48A big man up there.
- 2:37:52And catch it.
- 2:37:54He leans forward to the glove box.
- 2:37:56He looks into it.
- 2:37:58He's fine.
- 2:38:00The next pitch is outside the play from the catcher.
- 2:38:03Hank Thompson makes the catcher, but holds up.
- 2:38:06And an end to cover the plate.
- 2:38:08And it is a wild pitch.
- 2:38:10A wild pitch.
- 2:38:14A wild pitch.
- 2:38:17A wild pitch.
- 2:38:21That's it.
- 2:38:22We've had just about a track out.
- 2:38:25A wild pitch.
- 2:38:29Spectacular winning there.
- 2:38:31It's in center field by Anderson Farms.
- 2:38:34Good base front.
- 2:38:36Thompson moving a home.
- 2:38:41Coming about his box.
- 2:38:44He's trying to take away that.
- 2:38:46And he works into it.
- 2:38:49And he's going to the center field.
- 2:38:52And he tries to save.
- 2:38:56He's a work.
- 2:38:59He's really late.
- 2:39:01That ball this afternoon.
- 2:39:03He's playing him for it.
- 2:39:06He's retired.
- 2:39:08No runs for the Giants.
- 2:39:10There was one walk.
- 2:39:12One man left.
- 2:39:14The score is 6-2, New York 2.
- 2:39:19Now fans back at the Polar Grounds in New York.
- 2:39:22Going into the first one.
- 2:39:24The score is tied.
- 2:39:26Here are the 8-ending tokens.
- 2:39:283 runs, 2 runs.
- 2:39:30No errors.
- 2:39:31New York Giants 2 runs, 8-ending.
- 2:39:34And 9 left.
- 2:39:37That's a ball game.
- 2:39:40For the leadoff that.
- 2:39:42Let's pause 10 seconds for the radio application.
- 2:39:45This is the radio network for all.
- 2:39:48This is WDN, your exclusive World Series station in Chicago.
- 2:39:59The bounce play ball here in the 9-10.
- 2:40:01Off-hook is the leadoff for the Indians.
- 2:40:03Walked once in 3 trips.
- 2:40:05This is the first pitch to Lemon.
- 2:40:07Ball went high and outside.
- 2:40:11All 10 hits collected by the Indians were off the top of the bag.
- 2:40:14The starting pitcher.
- 2:40:19Ball in the count.
- 2:40:20The next pitch to Lemon.
- 2:40:21Each pitch to the Indians is strike one.
- 2:40:32Lemon is recognized as one of the top hitting pitchers in the game.
- 2:40:38Out to the surround third right.
- 2:40:39He takes ball two outside.
- 2:40:41Two and one to count.
- 2:40:44Lemon has won quite a few of his own games this year and in other years with his hitting.
- 2:40:50And just a couple of seasons ago that he came up with one home run.
- 2:40:54One season.
- 2:40:56A fine record for a pitcher.
- 2:40:58Of course he had previously played the outfield.
- 2:41:02Off the on strike one to count.
- 2:41:06Wilson works into the windup.
- 2:41:08The pitch is swung out and fouled out into the stands after the touch of the plate out of play.
- 2:41:13That is even up two and two.
- 2:41:27Lemon left the second batter.
- 2:41:29Popped out his last hit to the plate in the seventh inning.
- 2:41:34Wilson locates the sign.
- 2:41:35The pitcher pitch.
- 2:41:36Ball three outside and the string is out.
- 2:41:39It's a full count of three and two.
- 2:41:46Just to add to the evenness of this ball game each team has had three bases on ball.
- 2:41:52The count three and two on Lemon and the playoff pitch.
- 2:41:55Coming up swung a short fly ball into left field.
- 2:41:59Coming in fast to Johnny Heuven he's under it and makes the catch almost to the shortstop position.
- 2:42:04After the win pull that ball back in so that he can field.
- 2:42:10Jack could have taken it easily but he saw that Montee Heuven was not to run.
- 2:42:15Rather than disturbing perhaps risk a collision called him on for it.
- 2:42:23Run away.
- 2:42:24Lemon pops to Montee Heuven.
- 2:42:26Here's Al Smith the Indians lead off batter.
- 2:42:30Right hand side takes the fastball out to the hit of one.
- 2:42:34This is a picture of Magley in the first inning and score the first one of the ball game.
- 2:42:38Check out the missed hit.
- 2:42:41And he feels scratch hit in the fifth off the pitcher's glove.
- 2:42:46And he found it out to the first as well.
- 2:42:48He's up to seven innings.
- 2:42:51Ball on the count.
- 2:42:53Touched over the plate waiting.
- 2:42:55And next pitch as they strike the fastball.
- 2:42:57And down the middle the county ball on and strike one.
- 2:43:04Smith gets a lot of bases on the ball.
- 2:43:06He crowds the plate.
- 2:43:09One and one to count.
- 2:43:11So his next pitch is inside all the hitting.
- 2:43:13Smith spinning out of the way.
- 2:43:16And the county ball to the first one.
- 2:43:21Now we talk about those innings, hits, rebounds, hits.
- 2:43:27Well, this is just like line.
- 2:43:32The next pitch is a fastball is hit out into Montee Heuven going back now closer to the plate.
- 2:43:38He makes the catch.
- 2:43:39He stands there to give him the call.
- 2:43:41Hit high to Heuven and let's go.
- 2:43:50So Heuven has made the last three outs.
- 2:43:53He hits the long fastball like Jim Higgins in the stuff of the last.
- 2:43:57Back to the 315-point mark.
- 2:44:03He got the two out and nobody on.
- 2:44:05Bucky O'Hill has got the end of the batter's bow.
- 2:44:10Right on today's ball game there's been only one extra day's hits.
- 2:44:14Big words here.
- 2:44:15They've put Smith off the right center field ball.
- 2:44:18First pitch is up here.
- 2:44:20His ball went outside.
- 2:44:22Little pepper clock second base.
- 2:44:24One out of four.
- 2:44:26The single hitter's hitting.
- 2:44:33He's got a good ball player.
- 2:44:34He's had one of his best players.
- 2:44:38He takes his strike.
- 2:44:39That's what he has in there.
- 2:44:41The count is one point.
- 2:44:45Until I hit 15 home runs in the last season, a lot of people wonder where he gets his power.
- 2:44:53Good wrist out.
- 2:44:57One and one to count.
- 2:44:58He's got a swing and a miss.
- 2:45:01Right through.
- 2:45:09Also, the Regions are really enjoying this first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 2:45:15The folks all around the world, too, are enjoying it.
- 2:45:20The folks here, do you?
- 2:45:22They have great excitement here at the Polo grounds this afternoon.
- 2:45:26That one and two on the batter.
- 2:45:28Nobody on.
- 2:45:29Two out.
- 2:45:30The prior score, two to two.
- 2:45:34Cover straight away for a field.
- 2:45:39End of the wind up.
- 2:45:41Gets away from the cap.
- 2:45:44Away from him.
- 2:45:45All to him.
- 2:45:46Two and two down.
- 2:45:52The gang had the bases loaded and the race had a failure score.
- 2:45:55They found a bit of relief searching on the part of Dunlap.
- 2:45:58They found a bit of relief searching on the part of Dunlap and Barclayton.
- 2:46:04And the gang caught them after five-third, the failure score.
- 2:46:08The county's doing too. Larry Dillman, they come back.
- 2:46:13First half of the beginning. Here's the length. And the two to six.
- 2:46:23And it was Irvin's job that the wind played a very important part in holding that ball.
- 2:46:48And Larry Dillman actually brings it back on the end field.
- 2:46:53It's an error on Monte Irvin, the third giant error of the game.
- 2:46:56And the dealer is on second. With a tie-breaking run.
- 2:47:04Larry Dillby is the batter. Weston now goes up to Mark Grissom.
- 2:47:12And they're going to give them an intentional pass.
- 2:47:14Left-hand batter. And in front of the fact that our legend, the clean-up hitter, is on deck.
- 2:47:21They take him left-handedly. How did he left-handedly?
- 2:47:25Then there'll be a full hitter. And the left-hand batter was the wind of the favor.
- 2:47:38Left-hander Danny McCall, Wendon McCall, and right-hander Hart Wilhelm warming up in the giant bullpen.
- 2:47:45Or there's ball four. And Dillby takes his walk.
- 2:47:48An intentional pass. The second lucky hitter's had.
- 2:47:51And the second walk given up by Dillby. This one intentional.
- 2:47:54The winner's on first and second, making the first play possible, of course.
- 2:47:58And brings up a right-hand batter.
- 2:48:02Al Rosin steps in. He has one other court, an infield hit, off Alvin Dahl's hand, last time up.
- 2:48:17And it's pulled by two outs. First pick with all one outside. That one's a good work.
- 2:48:25Watch the look around to the left. The party over and beat him straight away, playing the sun field.
- 2:48:32What did they hit? Over and left and left.
- 2:48:36This one next to Alvin Dahl's and down to the back of the captain's mask.
- 2:48:40Turn left and then the left, a brief hit.
- 2:48:44Gets to a three-point up, can really hit it.
- 2:48:48Ball one and second. Alvin is on second. Dillby is on first with two outs during the first half of the ninth inning.
- 2:48:56Four-tide Cleveland through New York two.
- 2:49:04Frank Thompson, deep in position, up there at base, low back of the bag.
- 2:49:08Duff covering the top shot, moving around.
- 2:49:12Ever alert, waiting for the play. Rosin back in the batter's box with a down ball one and second.
- 2:49:17Get them up to the stretch.
- 2:49:19Let's back to the runner's second. The pick is up two with a half-ball, way higher to the inside corner.
- 2:49:26Ball one and second.
- 2:49:35One into the county, the head of the back of the ground, has him in the hole.
- 2:49:42Let's get him ready on deck in case he gets a chance to come up.
- 2:49:48Runners will travel with a crack at the back, they're two outs.
- 2:49:52Rosin, okays the turn, in position. There's the pick. It is Barclay outside.
- 2:50:01Barclay and cut to the turn.
- 2:50:10The runner in front of the face, let's get the move.
- 2:50:17Now Rosin, let me clean up that up at the plate.
- 2:50:21They'll be with a long lead out first.
- 2:50:23Let's hit the pitch.
- 2:50:24Foul, back to the screen, out of place.
- 2:50:26Count the names, two and two.
- 2:50:31Rosin, while he is at slugger, will change up as the pitcher, at one time, at a time, he'll see that his hand's right on the other end of that bat.
- 2:50:41Other time, he moves up on the bat.
- 2:50:44He'll hit the right field at the right time.
- 2:50:47Instead of slugging for the long ball, he tries to let that pitch, and will bring a run home.
- 2:50:53Two and two. He's one of the game's great competitors.
- 2:50:56Aggressive, hard work.
- 2:50:59There's the pitcher pitch. All three, outside and low, and the swing is out at the full count, and the runners will be moving with the pitch.
- 2:51:10Runners on first and second, two out.
- 2:51:13The count three and two.
- 2:51:18Now Lopez, the Indian manager, is talking the dugout.
- 2:51:21Lowell, walking back and forth.
- 2:51:24Near the racer right down below us, doing the hitting.
- 2:51:28The left field is now moved straight away.
- 2:51:31Here's the stretch.
- 2:51:32The runners are moving. The big pitch is swung on, and they've got a five-ball into left field.
- 2:51:36Marty Irvin moving in, under the scenario.
- 2:51:38He has it, and the Tigers retire.
- 2:51:47And there is another great bit of picking on the part of Mark Gissam.
- 2:51:53He's been a whale of a relief heller for the Giants this year, and is proving himself again this afternoon, and this World Series.
- 2:51:59For the Indians in the ninth, no runs, no hits.
- 2:52:02An error, and a base on balls, and he's been well-off.
- 2:52:07So we go on to the last half of the ninth inning of the score, 7-2, New York Giants 3.
- 2:52:14You know, fans, since 1944, there have been four six-game series and four seven-game series.
- 2:52:20As you'll see in the Gillette World Series record book, you can check the score of every series game ever played in this compact baseball book.
- 2:52:28And you can take it from there, because the book contains a world of other important baseball facts.
- 2:52:43Moving into the last half of the ninth inning, the fans coming back.
- 2:52:49The picture, Mark Gissam will be the leadoff batter.
- 2:52:53Then to the top of the batting order, Whitey Lockman, Calvin Dowd.
- 2:52:59A heavy part of the Giants' attack.
- 2:53:11The Indians have left 11 men on the bases, an eight-and-a-half inning.
- 2:53:16The Giants have left a total of nine on in eight innings.
- 2:53:23Gissam is going to bat during the last half of the ninth.
- 2:53:29And he has a chance to put his team off on the right pick.
- 2:53:32He's a right-hander all the way.
- 2:53:34Right-hand picking, right-hand batter.
- 2:53:41The Indians gave up three hits in the third inning. That was when the Giants scored their two runs.
- 2:53:46He has walked three and swept out four.
- 2:53:49Here's the windup.
- 2:53:51The Indians' first pick to Gissam is Baldwin outside and low.
- 2:53:56The Indians' second pick to Gissam is Bates.
- 2:54:06Next pick, Gissam swings, and he misses the curve ball.
- 2:54:11Boy, he's a big teller. If he ever connects on one, it'll take a ride.
- 2:54:14Ball one and strike one.
- 2:54:16You watch some of these pitchers, you never know when they're going to count it.
- 2:54:19There is a shut call as the curve hit the outside corner, breaking away.
- 2:54:24Ball one and strike two.
- 2:54:30Lemon into the windup.
- 2:54:32Pitchers and Gissam swings and misses. He struck him out.
- 2:54:36Strikeout number five for Bob Lemon.
- 2:54:42Oddly enough, Lemon in previous years has been noted as a strikeout artist, but this year they said they named him a control pitcher.
- 2:54:53He still had a lot of strikeouts, better than hundreds.
- 2:54:56But not up with the leadies, like some of the boys at 160.
- 2:55:08And that's about a Wiley Lachman left hand batter set game.
- 2:55:15First pitch turn is a strike call. The fast ball got the inside corner knee high.
- 2:55:24The outfielders just slipped well around to head right, deep in all fields.
- 2:55:28Lemon's next pitch is ball one, up side and low.
- 2:55:36Early win will undoubtedly be the starting pitcher in the Myers ball game,
- 2:55:40as the strikeout pitcher with the Indians this year.
- 2:55:46Lemon won the count. On Lachman, one out.
- 2:55:49The pitch is fouled into the dirt, goes back to the plate, and the count moves to ball one and straight in.
- 2:56:00They'll be opening right center, right side of the infield deep.
- 2:56:04Lachman has the poor hitter.
- 2:56:06He has one out of four, still to lead off in the third inning.
- 2:56:10That's part of the Giants for their two-run rally.
- 2:56:14One and two is the count now.
- 2:56:17On deck is Alvin Dove, one out.
- 2:56:21Lemon takes his time, drops into the wind deck.
- 2:56:24The pitch is well under the down ball, is it?
- 2:56:26Back to the pitch is now. Lemon takes it.
- 2:56:28They throw the post and Lachman is out.
- 2:56:30Going for that sinker, he topped it, tore the pitch, is now.
- 2:56:34Lachman's rounding out, hit to the first one, three.
- 2:56:37That brings up Alvin Dove.
- 2:56:39He has a walk and two hits and four trips to the plate.
- 2:56:48The Giants got seven hits off Lemon in the first four innings of the ballgame, and since then they've had just one.
- 2:56:54A single by Mueller in the seventh inning.
- 2:56:57Now the right-hand batter with two outs.
- 2:56:59Take the ball on inside. Throw inside, two and two, here in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:57:12He's going up, and then it pitches outside.
- 2:57:15Ball two, ball to no strike.
- 2:57:24Last of the ninth, Lemon now turns his back on the plate, wiping the postulation from his down.
- 2:57:33Always tugging at that catch.
- 2:57:38Now he's headed.
- 2:57:40They're throwing up and pitch, coming up, and Dock holds back the ball three, a third ball, breaking down and away, and it is spinning.
- 2:57:48On deck is John Mueller.
- 2:57:54Ball three, no strike.
- 2:57:56Two out in the last of the ninth.
- 2:57:59Then his next pitch is bowed back to the screen.
- 2:58:03Strike one.
- 2:58:05They gave him the go sign.
- 2:58:09Two and one.
- 2:58:11Lemon still has to come in with another.
- 2:58:16Rubbing up the new ball, turn out turn.
- 2:58:27Al Rose in the third baseman is pulled over close to the line.
- 2:58:31Lemon has his sign now.
- 2:58:33The three-one pitch. Pulled foul down the third baseline, over toward the stands, and it is ball three, strike two.
- 2:58:41Well, he's caught up with him now, and it boils down to just one pitch. One for the batter, one for the pitcher.
- 2:58:51Ball three, strike two.
- 2:58:54Dock digs back in there.
- 2:58:56Right-hand batter.
- 2:59:00One of the game's real tough competitors.
- 2:59:04Hard to get out. Lemon works into the windup.
- 2:59:06And the big pitch is rung on and popped up foul off to the right, and works his racing over near the stands.
- 2:59:11He won't be able to get to it. He drops back in the crowd. Out of play.
- 2:59:20Well, the fans have had their share of souvenirs in the stands.
- 2:59:25None in home run territory.
- 2:59:28Only one extra base hit right back in the first inning.
- 2:59:35Re-into the count. Unpopped volley. Closed in newborn play.
- 2:59:41Lemon takes a long look on the sign for this catch at Dunhegan.
- 2:59:45It's all set. Here's the windup.
- 2:59:47And the three-two pitch is run and pulled far out into left field.
- 2:59:50Smith is going back. Right in front of the wall. He's under the mix.
- 2:59:53The wind held it up.
- 2:59:55Boy, we were talking about home run territory, and there was one that was traveling for it.
- 2:59:59360 feet away.
- 3:00:02Al Smith made the catch, and the side is retired.
- 3:00:06For the Giants in the ninth, no runs, no hits, nothing across, and we go into extra innings.
- 3:00:13At the end of ninth, it is Cleveland 2, New York Giants 2.
- 3:00:17Al, this person is really turning out to be something, isn't it?
- 3:00:21Well, yes, sir. Jimmy, and do you know this is the first extra inning ballgame in World Series play since back in 1952?
- 3:00:28When there was an extra inning ballgame on the fifth day of October,
- 3:00:32in which the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees played an extra inning affair, 11 innings.
- 3:00:37And if I remember rightly, Carl Erskine was the pitcher in that ballgame.
- 3:00:41So, Jimmy, we've had our share of thrills here this afternoon, haven't we?
- 3:00:44You're absolutely right, Al, and as I said before, if this is an indicator,
- 3:00:48we're really in for something in the rest of this World Series.
- 3:00:50Well, at the end of ninth innings, it's tied up. Al, 2 and 2, I haven't been able to break it.
- 3:00:54Why don't you take it over? I'll help her.
- 3:00:56All right, Jimmy, we'll see what will happen here.
- 3:00:58Here are your totals at the end of nine innings of play for the Cleveland Indians, two runs, seven hits, no errors.
- 3:01:02They have left 11 on here this afternoon in facing pitchers Magley, Little, and now Mark Grissom.
- 3:01:07And for the New York Giants, in facing Bob Lemon, they have two runs on eight base hits.
- 3:01:11They've committed three errors afield, and nine have been left on.
- 3:01:15So, it's just about as even, Stephen, as it possibly can be with the exception of the error column.
- 3:01:19And now let's step into the top half of the tenth inning to see what Victor Wirtz is going to do.
- 3:01:24He's ripped a triple and two singles in four at bats and swings on the first pitch offered by Grissom,
- 3:01:28hits a high foul ball off to the left of the plate, way up into the second tier out of play.
- 3:01:32So, this promises, as Jimmy said, to be a wing ding series.
- 3:01:36All the experts have picked it as such, and I think all the fans around the country and the world expect it to be exactly that.
- 3:01:41The Cleveland Indians and the New York Giants, and Mark Grissom showing a lot of strength on the mound in relief,
- 3:01:46is pitching now the left-handed batting Victor Wirtz.
- 3:01:49As a count on him, I'll strike one.
- 3:01:51Pitches, a knuckleball, what looks like a knuckle, and it's fouled off to the left of the plate for strike two.
- 3:01:58Inning number ten here in the first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 3:02:03This is the 51st playing of the fall classic.
- 3:02:05And right now, the shadows are beginning to fall here over Coogan's Bluff and over the playing diamond at the ground.
- 3:02:12On plate, first base, pitchers mound, and second base, and third base in the shadows.
- 3:02:19Now Grissom is ready. Delivers on to Wirtz takes the fastball, finding their high for ball one.
- 3:02:24One ball and two strikes.
- 3:02:28Cleveland to the New York Giants, too.
- 3:02:30I guess you wouldn't want a more even-steven ball game to start off the big fall activity.
- 3:02:36Marvin Grissom, 34-year-old right-hander,
- 3:02:39pitch some fine relief ball for the Giants this year. Delivers to Wirtz a fastball low for ball two.
- 3:02:46Well, one thing you said about it, Bob Lemon has lasted so far with three pitches the Giants have put out there.
- 3:02:51MacGray, Don Little, who pitched only one-third of the eighth inning,
- 3:02:54and Mark Grissom, who pitched two-thirds of the eighth, and has been staming along ever since.
- 3:02:59Victor Wirtz levels that bat off. Grissom fires away two-and-two. Fastball, it's high and outside.
- 3:03:07So Wirtz has an even chance, as far as Grissom is concerned, with a three-ball, two-strike count.
- 3:03:12First man up here for the Cleveland Indians in the first half of the tenth inning.
- 3:03:20Bob Grissom takes a sign, dealt out there by Western.
- 3:03:25Right foot forward on the rubber, waiting. Now he starts his motion.
- 3:03:28The three-two pitch, and the play towards the swing on.
- 3:03:30There's a high-fly ball hit down the left-field line.
- 3:03:32Coving foul, up into the second-tier out of play.
- 3:03:35There, that's another close-in.
- 3:03:37Alva Dark electrified everybody with two down.
- 3:03:39The bases empty in the last half of the ninth inning, as Jimmy told you.
- 3:03:43At a high, tiring drive deep into left field, where Al Smith was able to get under to make the catch.
- 3:03:50Before something like the one that was hit out there to Monty Urban,
- 3:03:52just missed the overhanging facade here at the Polo Grounds by a scant few feet.
- 3:03:59Been quite a ball game here this afternoon.
- 3:04:01Now the next three-two pitch here on Victor Wirtz.
- 3:04:03Grissom cuts it loose, an overhand fastball.
- 3:04:05There's a line shot hit for left field, it's curving just outside foul.
- 3:04:09Victor Wirtz all the way down to first base, and Cade is not willing.
- 3:04:13He didn't even grab it, he just tucked it under his arm and started to run.
- 3:04:19Quite a vast of margins, that becomes a foul ball, and Wirtz still has a count of three and two.
- 3:04:24So, so far with Wirtz, Mr. Grissom has a living sort of a charmed life.
- 3:04:32That buzzed the fans here at the Polo Grounds, make no mistake.
- 3:04:39Now Wirtz gets that.
- 3:04:41I think my friend Jimmy almost swallowed his chewing gum.
- 3:04:44Oh me.
- 3:04:46Now the three-two pitch for Amar Grissom.
- 3:04:48An overhand fastball swing on by Wirtz, there's a long drive deep into left center field.
- 3:04:51Willie Mays going to have to hurt if he's going to get this one, he's not going to get it.
- 3:04:53It's in the alley, left center field for the bases.
- 3:04:55Victor Wirtz on his way to second.
- 3:04:57Here comes Willie Mays, throw into out and dark and short.
- 3:04:59It's a stand up two-bagger for Victor Wirtz.
- 3:05:02He has the only extra base blows in the ball game today, a triple and now a double.
- 3:05:08Victor Wirtz, a double to deep left center field.
- 3:05:12Well, Willie Mays made one spectacular catch on Victor Wirtz back in the eighth inning.
- 3:05:16Jimmy Dundee told you, going deep in the right center field, taking the ball over his shoulder,
- 3:05:20much in the manner, and then catching forward pass to his quarterback.
- 3:05:23Mays turned around, his quick throw in, held things down pretty much.
- 3:05:27Rudy Regalado is coming out of the bolt and he's going to run for Victor Wirtz.
- 3:05:31Rudy Regalado, the kid from California.
- 3:05:34Round of applause for Vic Wirtz and he deserves it.
- 3:05:37Rudy Regalado is taking his position at second base.
- 3:05:55Regalado, the young fellow who came out of California to make himself a spot on the ball club.
- 3:06:01Rudy's from Los Angeles, California.
- 3:06:03That is, he was born there and was raised there and still lives there.
- 3:06:06Six feet, 185 pounds.
- 3:06:08He's been used principally in relief for the Cleveland Indians this year.
- 3:06:13That is, as a relief third baseman.
- 3:06:16And I believe Jimmy, he has played a little short stuff too, hasn't he?
- 3:06:19Yes, he has played short, third and second.
- 3:06:22He likes third base, how better than any of the other positions.
- 3:06:26Oh, I know, a pulled prime muscle took him out of the lineup when he was hitting pretty well.
- 3:06:30Now batting right handed Sam Dettie for his first at bat of the afternoon.
- 3:06:34And he bumps the first pitch down to third base lineup.
- 3:06:37Look at this, Hank Thompson throws to Davey Williams covering at first base.
- 3:06:40Sam Dettie sent up to sacrifice Regalado over to third.
- 3:06:43Successfully does it.
- 3:06:45Sam Dettie went up there batting at 266.
- 3:06:48Of course, we'll hold that batting average.
- 3:06:52Fire for put out on the sacrifice in case you're scoring along with us this afternoon.
- 3:06:55That puts Regalado running for Victor Woods who doubled the left center field on third base in scoring position.
- 3:07:01And hitting left handed, Dave Pope coming up there and they're going to work him intentionally.
- 3:07:05Setting up the opportunity for a double play.
- 3:07:08There's ball one on the outside.
- 3:07:11Mark Grissom will throw wide to him for the next series.
- 3:07:13And while this is being done, let's pause 10 seconds here for station identification.
- 3:07:18This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 3:07:22WGN, your exclusive World Series station, Chicago.
- 3:07:32We've just completed ball four to Dave Pope.
- 3:07:37And Bill Glenn, a left hand here, is being called upon to bat for Jim Hegan.
- 3:07:42So Al Lopez is going all out here in his attempt to get this run in.
- 3:07:47To lead in the ball game here in the top half of the 10th inning.
- 3:07:49Because once you get past those nine, as we all know, it's a sudden death affair.
- 3:07:53And of course, Grissom has his work cut out for him very definitely.
- 3:07:57Bill Glenn, hitting our tanner, he's being an answer to the crowd now.
- 3:08:03They'll probably stay in and play it first base.
- 3:08:10Means we'll have a new catcher for the Cleveland Indians.
- 3:08:13Glynn coming on here in the 10th inning to bat for Hegan.
- 3:08:16Will stay in that slot probably and play at first base.
- 3:08:18Of course, this is all conjecture on my part.
- 3:08:21I'll have to wait to see what Manager Al Lopez has in mind.
- 3:08:26But we're just sort of kind of looking forward to the last half of the 10th inning.
- 3:08:29To see how the defensive alignment is going to come up for Cleveland.
- 3:08:33Bill Glenn hitting left handed.
- 3:08:34Moving in there right now.
- 3:08:36First baseman hit 251 over the regular season.
- 3:08:38Left handed batter.
- 3:08:41Ready for first pitch to Glynn with runners at first and third.
- 3:08:44Second is open and one out.
- 3:08:46The pitch to Glynn is a curve, nicely over, right under the letters for called strike one.
- 3:08:49Grissom getting a lot of motion, not too much speed.
- 3:08:57The next batter up there should be Bob Lemon.
- 3:09:02Down comes the pitch again.
- 3:09:03Passball is run on the miss by Glynn for strike two.
- 3:09:07And Thompson has been playing a shallow third base with Glynn up there.
- 3:09:11Of course, he has a double purpose at third.
- 3:09:13He's playing shallow.
- 3:09:14Glynn might drop one down.
- 3:09:15Top of his swing and drop it down the third baseline.
- 3:09:17And two, Regalado is on third.
- 3:09:19And Thompson wants to be there in a benefit play back there for him.
- 3:09:23Regalado takes his lead off at third base.
- 3:09:26He represents a tie breaking run for Cleveland.
- 3:09:28In comes the pitch.
- 3:09:29A passball high off the peak of the cap for ball one.
- 3:09:34Left hander Wendy McCall along with Hort Wilhelm, the right hander down in the bullpen for the New York Jaws,
- 3:09:40just in case Marv Grissom should have any more trouble here in the 10th inning.
- 3:09:43Words open with a double.
- 3:09:44Regalado is running for him.
- 3:09:47Gendry sacrificed to run it down to third.
- 3:09:49Hope was lost intentionally.
- 3:09:51Good swing on by Glynn and miss.
- 3:09:52Pass by three.
- 3:09:54Grissom came in with a hooky jerk curve ball and Glynn was after it.
- 3:09:56Miss it right off the piste.
- 3:09:58That's the big important out for Marv Grissom to be picking up at this particular point in the game.
- 3:10:02That gives him his second strikeout.
- 3:10:04Four times Cleveland batsmen have gone down by the strikeout route.
- 3:10:09And the round of applause is for Bob Lemon as he comes out.
- 3:10:12Here's a chance for Bob definitely to strike a blow on his own behalf.
- 3:10:18Let's say this afternoon Lemon has walked in the second inning,
- 3:10:21lined out the center field to Willie Mays in the fifth,
- 3:10:23wrapped up the shortstop Alvin Dark in the seventh,
- 3:10:25and in the ninth inning hit a fly ball to left field to Marty Irvin.
- 3:10:31Time has called for the moment as Wiley Loughlin comes over to say something to Marv Grissom
- 3:10:36and remind him that there are two out here in the top of the tenth inning.
- 3:10:41Bregolato is on at third base.
- 3:10:43At first is Dave Pope.
- 3:10:44Second is open two down.
- 3:10:45Score is still two a piece and Bob Lemon up.
- 3:10:48Grissom delivers to him.
- 3:10:49And Lemon takes a fast ball.
- 3:10:50It's low and outside for ball one.
- 3:10:56Quite a tense moment in the ballgame here for Marv Grissom and the New York Giants.
- 3:11:01As Jim told you, this is Marv Grissom's ballgame now.
- 3:11:03The winner loses.
- 3:11:04He's 110, lost seven on the regular season.
- 3:11:07He's ready now.
- 3:11:08He delivers.
- 3:11:09A curve swing on.
- 3:11:10Time drive right for Lennie Loughlin at first base for outnumbered three to retire to the side.
- 3:11:14And the Pagans left over to the board.
- 3:11:18Oh, here in the tenth inning for Cleveland, no runs, one base hit.
- 3:11:22There were no giant errors and two Cleveland Indians were left off.
- 3:11:25Running the total now to 13 to be left on and going to bat ten times.
- 3:11:29So the score at the end of nine are what happens to play.
- 3:11:31Remains, Cleveland two, the New York Giants two.
- 3:11:36Well, we're in next yearnings now, fans.
- 3:11:38And how long this game will go is the 64-point.
- 3:11:41The longest game on record took three hours and 28 minutes when the Tigers faced the Cubs in 1945.
- 3:11:47Now you'll find plenty of interesting baseball dope just like this if you get yourself a copy of the Gillette World Series record book.
- 3:11:54Here's a great little reference book to have on hand all year round.
- 3:11:57It answers thousands of questions, highlights facts, figures and features that make every game more exciting and more enjoyable.

- 3:12:12Now the last half, early number ten.
- 3:12:21Now the changes in the lineup for Cleveland.
- 3:12:24At first place we have Bill Glynn and Mickey Grasso,
- 3:12:30a fellow who had a terrific fight to make a comeback this year after having suffered a severe fracture of the leg.
- 3:12:37Is coming on to do the catching here in this World Series game and he'll bat in the number five position.
- 3:12:45So Mickey Grasso comes on. He's the same Mickey Grasso who did quite a bit of the catching for the Washington Nationals and was dealt over to the Cleveland Indians.
- 3:12:55Mickey Grasso, not practically all of the year because of that fractured leg, is coming on here in the 10th inning to be the catcher.
- 3:13:01And at first base as we had supposed Bill Glynn remains who'll bat number eight.
- 3:13:05He'll take over at first base. So defensively now the Cleveland Indians have Bob Lemon on the mound.
- 3:13:09Mickey Grasso behind the plate. At first base Bill Glynn. At second Bobby Mueller. At short, a Sam Duddy. And at third is Al Rosen.
- 3:13:17The outfield remains the same of left fielder Al Smith, center fielder Larry Doeby, right fielder Dave Polk.
- 3:13:23Lemon ready to pitch now to Don Mueller. He does and gets a lot of curveball in there for a strike.
- 3:13:32Two runs on seven hits for Cleveland. No errors. They've stranded 13 so far in this extra inning ball game.
- 3:13:38The Giants have two runs and eight hits off Lemon.
- 3:13:41Mueller, Mueller takes a cup at this next pitch and hits a foul ball off the end of the bat.
- 3:13:45Goes over into the stands on a play back at third base.
- 3:13:48Strike two of the count on Don Mueller. The number three here in the Giants order.
- 3:13:52He'll be followed by Willie Mays and then by Hank Thompson.
- 3:13:57Two and two. What'll they do? I don't know. It's been quite a ball game here today.
- 3:14:04The wind sort of died down a bit coming in from behind left field, but still we have enough of it here to determine what's going to happen with the fly ball.
- 3:14:14Lemon's ready now. Thompson delivers an overhand curve. Swung on and missed by Mueller.
- 3:14:18Four-second period. The ball is dropped by Dressel. He'll pick it up and tag Don Mueller for the first out.
- 3:14:25Coming up now is Willie Mays. They'll remember his terrific catch in center field.
- 3:14:32Lemon with six strikeouts now to face Willie Mays.
- 3:14:35Willie is yet to get his first base hit in the World Series.
- 3:14:38He popped up a short in the first, walked in the third, grounded the third in the fifth inning, and forced Mueller at second base in the seventh.
- 3:14:49Willie Mays hitting right.
- 3:14:51Mickey Dressel, fine competitor behind the plate now for the Cleveland Indians, working with Bob Lemon.
- 3:14:57Dressel, whose leg still bothers him, nevertheless he's out there going.
- 3:15:00We're in the twos. Curve ball is way outside and low to Willie Mays. Gets through and back to the backstop for ball one.
- 3:15:08Look as though Bob Lemon threw that sinker. Got a little too much outside.
- 3:15:18One out for the Giants here in the tenth inning. There are no base runners. The score is still tied at two apiece.
- 3:15:24Bob Lemon, well-helmed, is alone throwing down the giant bullpen now. Looks as though it will be heat coming on in case he's needed.
- 3:15:32Lemon, the ball is a curve, drives Willie Mays back from the plate, flips in under the short ribs.
- 3:15:36Ball two. Two balls, no strikes on Willie Mays.
- 3:15:44Bob Lemon, who has paced himself very well here this afternoon, beats that ball down in the palm of the glove.
- 3:15:50As he leans forward, takes a sign from Dressel. Dressel, the relief catcher now for Cleveland.
- 3:15:55Lemon delivers a curve, snaps off low and outside, and Dressel is having a little trouble handling the curve balls.
- 3:16:01Fired in there by Bob Lemon. Willie Mays has a count of three nothing. Three balls, no strikes.
- 3:16:11Lemon, back to visit the rising bag, slams it down. Comes right up, puts his foot on the rubber.
- 3:16:19He's down at Willie Mays, standing there, waiting for the pitch to be made.
- 3:16:24Now the three-oh delivery. Lemon comes in with the fast ball, taken by Mays and forwarded through at the knees for strike one call.
- 3:16:32Al Barlich, the National League umpire, working the plate here this afternoon, can be heard all over this ballpark.
- 3:16:42No doubt about it, when Barlich calls him, they're called.
- 3:16:44Fast ball is outside and low for ball four, and Willie Mays with one out draws a free ticket for first base to represent the possible winning run for the New York Giants.
- 3:16:52In a way, bases on balls. If you'll check me, Jim, that's a fourth given up by Jim Lemon.
- 3:16:57Again, the fourth given up by Bob Lemon. And coming up to the plate now is Hank Thompson.
- 3:17:03Hank's flanked a single to right field back in the third inning.
- 3:17:07He's rolled out the first, then hit a single to right, came along in the fifth inning and struck out, and then was walked in the eighth.
- 3:17:13He's won three this afternoon and has driven in one of the runs. The Giants have possessed.
- 3:17:19Now we're ready for the first pitch.
- 3:17:21Now it comes and goes to the runner. Willie Mays is going to try for it, and the kickbacker throws down a second. It's not in time for Denny.
- 3:17:26And Willie Mays has stolen second base.
- 3:17:34Sam Denny, Sam Denny kept that ball. He wasn't going to give Willie Mays a chance to get up and get off that bag at all.
- 3:17:39He just kept tapping him on the leg. And um, on Park Carlin's side, they're laughing. Sam Denny was insistent.
- 3:17:47Willie Mays has stolen second base here.
- 3:17:50Oh, he puts the Giants in a pretty good spot. And now they're going to put Hank Thompson on. They're going to put him on.
- 3:18:03Well, put Thompson on, walked intentionally. That is a first and second. That'll set up a double play situation.
- 3:18:09That's the thing the Cleveland Indians, of course, are now hoping for.
- 3:18:13That's a face on ball.
- 3:18:15And here comes a guy that did a tremendous lot of damage to the National League pitchers this year.
- 3:18:21Dusty Rhodes coming up to the plate. There's an answer for him and you'll hear them yell for him as soon as they realize who it's coming up.
- 3:18:33Dusty Rhodes coming up to the plate. He's going to bat for Monte Irvin. He'll probably remain out there to play in the field.
- 3:18:41Dusty Rhodes starting at 3-41. Hit 15 home runs this year for the Giants, drove in 50 runs and didn't play too often.
- 3:18:50Only 82 of the ballgames, used principally as a pinch batter.
- 3:18:55Dusty Rhodes coming off, he got tainted. So Lemmon has his work cut out for him with one out, two on here in the last of the 10th inning.
- 3:19:02Rhodes swings on the first pitch, hits a half-mile ball into right field, coming over his coat, back the other line, leaps.
- 3:19:08He can't get it. It's into the right field, stands for home runs for Dusty Rhodes.
- 3:19:12Lemmon throws his club straight up in the air and that's it. That does it.
- 3:19:22At the plate, Dusty Rhodes is being mobbed. He's being mobbed here in the last half of the 10th inning for a pinch hit home run in this World Series to drive in three of them.
- 3:19:34So it's a final five to two, five runs for the New York Giants. Five runs and let's see, that'll be the ninth hit.
- 3:19:42Five runs, nine hits. They had three errors here this afternoon and left a total of nine on the pitch.
- 3:19:48So Dusty Rhodes gets off and continues to be known as the marvelous pinch batter.
- 3:19:53Dusty Rhodes home run in the 10th inning with one out and two men on to drive in three runs for the Giants in the 10th.
- 3:19:59That was the only base hit. There were no errors. There was one stolen base. Nobody was left on.
- 3:20:04For the Cleveland Indians, two runs here this afternoon on a total of seven hits. Getting all off magley.
- 3:20:09They had no errors and left on the bases this afternoon, 13 for the Cleveland Indians.
- 3:20:15Well everybody, it's all over. A storybook finish for the New York Giants in the first game of the 1954 World Series.
- 3:20:21And I know that a veteran reporter has many, many things to say about what has been seen here this afternoon.
- 3:20:27And in just a moment, Bill Corum will review the highlights of today's game for you.
- 3:20:33Ladies and gentlemen, a home permanent that's really trouble free.
- 3:20:38It's new self-timing Tony with 15-minute waving motions.
- 3:20:42With this new Tony, you're sure of perfect timing every time.
- 3:20:46There's no clock checking, no test curls, no guesswork.
- 3:20:49Your self-timing Tony is timed to right. Your waves can't go wrong.
- 3:20:54It takes only minutes to wave and neutralize. Gives you months of more carefree waves.
- 3:20:59It's the one permanent that's fast and lasts.
- 3:21:02And your wave will be soft and natural right from the very first day.
- 3:21:06So no matter how happy you are with your wave, today.
- 3:21:09It's a new Tony, a better Tony. It's self-timing, self-timing, self-timing, self-timing Tony.
- 3:21:19Well that was quite a finish to quite a ball game, wasn't it?
- 3:21:22The third time this year that Dusty Rhodes has walked up at that plate and hit a pinch hit home run.
- 3:21:27And I guess that probably never has happened before. I don't have any record here on it.
- 3:21:31But it's great pinch hitting anyhow.
- 3:21:34And it was the 16th hit that he had made in 46 trips to the plate, I believe, as a pinch hitter.
- 3:21:41Of course he played regularly part of the season too.
- 3:21:44But before we go on with the victorious Giants,
- 3:21:47it should be said that nobody ever pissed a sadder-hearted game than did Bob Lemon of San Bernardino, California, here for the Indians this afternoon.
- 3:21:55He was a little shaky at the beginning, got better as the game went on.
- 3:21:59And that was the only extra base hit that home run of Rhodes that made, of course, the score 5 to 2,
- 3:22:06where all the Giants really needed then.
- 3:22:08A sudden death would have been that one run that they had down at second base, but they got three for good measure.
- 3:22:13And of course it was a tremendous victory because in any World Series, as all you listeners know,
- 3:22:20the first game amounts to so much.
- 3:22:23And also because Lemon has been, of course, if not the best, it's between either Bob or early Winn, I should say,
- 3:22:30because both of them won 23 games, but by some people at least, considered their strongest pitcher.
- 3:22:36And he was a great pitcher this afternoon.
- 3:22:38And when you beat the top pitcher, of course, Magley didn't finish either.
- 3:22:42But a great many people, and on his record, he doesn't rate as the Giants tops.
- 3:22:46That will be Gianni Antonelli, who will pitch tomorrow.
- 3:22:49And so the Giants got, as I said before, a tremendous break in this victory.
- 3:22:53Not only the all-important first game, but now in an excellent pitching position.
- 3:22:58And they would even have Magley, who didn't do too badly.
- 3:23:02And of course was succeeded by Little.
- 3:23:04And Little by Little, Mr. Vic Wirtz, who was one of the greatest hitters I ever saw this afternoon in any World Series,
- 3:23:10actually, if you're told the truth, you'd have to say that he made five straight hits.
- 3:23:15Of course he didn't.
- 3:23:16Willie May has robbed him, and undoubtedly the greatest catch, with the greatest catch,
- 3:23:20that's ever been made in World Series history.
- 3:23:22He went clear back to the barrier.
- 3:23:24The ball was clear over his head.
- 3:23:26Everybody in the crowd of 52,000-plus years thought it was over his head.
- 3:23:30And the only one that wouldn't acknowledge it was Willie.
- 3:23:33He just kept going and kept going, and finally the ball dropped in his glove over his shoulder,
- 3:23:37and he turned around and threw a strike to second base.
- 3:23:39He can really rifle that ball as well as catch it.
- 3:23:42Of course he didn't do anything at the bat this afternoon except draw a couple of bases on balls,
- 3:23:47but he was, as he has been all season, a tremendous ball player.
- 3:23:51And so are these two teams, Cleveland having 111 games this year.
- 3:23:56It was the fourth pitch hit home run in World Series history, by the way.
- 3:24:00Somebody just had me a note here on that.
- 3:24:02That was Rhodes, and it was the fourth pitch hit home run in World Series history.
- 3:24:06I was saying that Cleveland had won 111 games, which is a record, and is a mighty fine ball team.
- 3:24:13They made no errors today.
- 3:24:14They played good type baseball, and they got stop pitching from Lamont.
