  Speaker 5: just exactly that, And what a moment it was. It

  Speaker 5: and like I said, just couldn't be proud of this

  Speaker 5: team and coaches. And I think back to all the

  Speaker 5: times this season talking with coach and he just would

  Speaker 5: be like, you know, this team is really built. You know,

  Speaker 5: no guarantees you can do it, because it's awfully hard

  Speaker 5: to do it, but this team is built to go

  Speaker 5: and do this. And he's been saying that before this season.

  Speaker 5: Early season, mid season, and on the back stretch of

  Speaker 5: the season. So congratulations to them.

  Speaker 4: Yeah, we were talking about it earlier, where twenty twenty

  Speaker 4: three had bona fide stars, I mean guys that are
• 2:35
  Speaker 4: already up in Major League baseball. They were incredibly fast.

  Speaker 4: You said the name schemes, crews, tanks in college baseball,

  Speaker 4: everybody knew who you were talking about. Now this team's guy.

  Speaker 4: Guys are going to play a long time. They're gonna

  Speaker 4: get paid to play baseball for a very long time.

  Speaker 4: But it was kind of built differently, like it had
• 2:52
  Speaker 4: really good players. It's got elite players, but it was

  Speaker 4: really just a group that found a way to come

  Speaker 4: together and whatever the moment was, it wasn't always pretty.

  Speaker 4: And I kind of threw out my favorite tagline, too

  Speaker 4: gritty to be pretty was kind of how I felt

  Speaker 4: about this team, because they did. They weren't built like
• 3:09
  Speaker 4: twenty three was, but they were still as effective and.

  Speaker 5: Then some you know, I've waited until unless you hoisted
• 3:16
  Speaker 5: the trophy last night, but one of the thoughts I've
• 3:18
  Speaker 5: had all season, and it's funny you bring it up
• 3:22
  Speaker 5: the way you do. You know, you look at that
• 3:24
  Speaker 5: twenty twenty three team. I really felt like all season long,
• 3:27
  Speaker 5: as hard as it is to run through the SEC
• 3:30
  Speaker 5: and compete for the conference championship, we all know how
• 3:33
  Speaker 5: hard it is to be able to get through the
• 3:35
  Speaker 5: gauntlet that is the SEC tournament and then you know,

  Speaker 5: start over again in the NCAA tournament. I felt like
• 3:43
  Speaker 5: in twenty twenty three, with all of the names and
• 3:45
  Speaker 5: all of the known commodities you had, that not getting
• 3:50
  Speaker 5: to Omaha would have felt like a disappointment, not necessarily
• 3:53
  Speaker 5: winning at all, because once you get here, doing that
• 3:56
  Speaker 5: is a difficult task in and of itself. But that
• 3:59
  Speaker 5: was kind of the feat fair or unfair, And it's
• 4:03
  Speaker 5: it's weird because I sit here and think, do can
• 4:06
  Speaker 5: I really say with a straight face on the radio

  Speaker 5: at Baton Rouge that it felt like this team superseded
• 4:13
  Speaker 5: expectations Because I know the expectations were to compete for

  Speaker 5: all the things I just mentioned, I just felt like
• 4:19
  Speaker 5: there were so many more unknown commodities that you know,
• 4:22
  Speaker 5: certainly you knew had the potential, but I don't know
• 4:25
  Speaker 5: that I felt as comfortable about or as as sure
• 4:30
  Speaker 5: as maybe I was. And again, that's a typically cap

  Speaker 5: to this team because I think they found not only
• 4:36
  Speaker 5: did they have really good players, as you say, and
• 4:39
  Speaker 5: now put them together in a team environment. And the

  Speaker 5: buy in was very early. I told Jay Johnson during
• 4:45
  Speaker 5: fall baseball sentim a note. I saw the team was
• 4:47
  Speaker 5: wearing the big team little knee shirts and that's something
• 4:50
  Speaker 5: that that I grew up with and have been very
• 4:52
  Speaker 5: associated with. And I just remember texting him saying, Coach,
• 4:56
  Speaker 5: I love the shirts. So I think the team buy
• 4:59
  Speaker 5: in was there. But I think you saw guys who
• 5:03
  Speaker 5: steadily and dramatically improved as the season went along. And
• 5:07
  Speaker 5: you know, as I said here this morning, and I
• 5:09
  Speaker 5: know I'm going to leave a lot of people out
• 5:11
  Speaker 5: Chase Shores to me, a guy who again suffered the injury,
• 5:15
  Speaker 5: had Tommy john had to fight to get his way back.

  Speaker 5: He starts the season as your Sunday Game three or
• 5:20
  Speaker 5: weekend game three starter, and then that doesn't work out
• 5:23
  Speaker 5: so well, and then what is he going to do?
• 5:25
  Speaker 5: Where is his role? And I think we found it
• 5:27
  Speaker 5: what it was most important, and that was down the
• 5:29
  Speaker 5: back stretch of postseason play. And dare I say he
• 5:34
  Speaker 5: was damn near and hittable up here?

  Speaker 6: Yeah, voice, I mean you bring up that point about

  Speaker 6: exceeding expectation. That's crazy to say, because I think everybody

  Speaker 6: kind of feels that because it's such a different team.

  Speaker 6: But they start out preseason number one, but you still
• 5:49
  Speaker 6: feel that they did exceed expectations, which is just a
• 5:52
  Speaker 6: huge testament to where the program's at. What Jay has done,

  Speaker 6: the energy, the juice, and just everything that he's kind
• 5:58
  Speaker 6: of built around this program.

  Speaker 5: Yeah, man, I think you're right because I mean, you know,

  Speaker 5: I think back to that twenty twenty three season again

  Speaker 5: where maybe there was a false sense of Wow, this
• 6:10
  Speaker 5: team really ought to be able to do it, and
• 6:12
  Speaker 5: again that's unfair to that team or any team when
• 6:15
  Speaker 5: you're playing her at LSU, but that's the standards. But
• 6:18
  Speaker 5: I remember, you know, Jay just talking about, you know
• 6:22
  Speaker 5: how everything that you do builds the program, and year
• 6:27
  Speaker 5: to year, teams are going to do different things, and
• 6:29
  Speaker 5: you're always striving to win every single game, compete for
• 6:33
  Speaker 5: a conference championship, and win a national title. That's what expected.

  Speaker 5: But he when they were rated number one and then
• 6:41
  Speaker 5: going into this year ranked number one in certain polls,
• 6:44
  Speaker 5: you know, Jay was like, I don't hide away from
• 6:46
  Speaker 5: That's that's why I came to coach here. That's why
• 6:48
  Speaker 5: these kids come to play here. Like if that becomes
• 6:51
  Speaker 5: something that gets in their heads, then they don't need
• 6:53
  Speaker 5: to be playing here because that's what they got to
• 6:55
  Speaker 5: get accustomed to. And I think this year emboldens that
• 6:59
  Speaker 5: kind of philosophe of guys. We won't be able to
• 7:02
  Speaker 5: be perfect every day, but we're going to come out
• 7:04
  Speaker 5: swinging every single day and whatever happened yesterday, good or bad,
• 7:09
  Speaker 5: has no impact on today. And and that's I think
• 7:12
  Speaker 5: the two similarities between the twenty three team and this team,
• 7:16
  Speaker 5: and Jay has talked about it, and so there's there's
• 7:19
  Speaker 5: certainly one similarity.

  Speaker 4: And to your point, we were talking about this earlier,
• 7:24
  Speaker 4: like you know, going to LSU, not running from expectation,
• 7:28
  Speaker 4: betting on yourself. I mean three of the reasons why
• 7:31
  Speaker 4: you won a national championship came from Utah Valley, Indiana State,
• 7:36
  Speaker 4: and UC San Diego.

  Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a huge point and even coach has mentioned
• 7:41
  Speaker 5: that before. In fact, we talked about it one night
• 7:43
  Speaker 5: on his radio show that you know, when he first
• 7:46
  Speaker 5: got here, the approach from the portal was let's go
• 7:50
  Speaker 5: find some SEC guys that want a new home, or
• 7:52
  Speaker 5: let's go find some power for guys that want a
• 7:54
  Speaker 5: new home. And you know he said that wasn't the case.

  Speaker 5: The way this team was built in twenty twenty five,
• 8:01
  Speaker 5: and by far the majority, if not all, of the
• 8:04
  Speaker 5: Portal guys that made this roster, you know, came from
• 8:09
  Speaker 5: quote unquote mid majors. But you know, Jay knows that,
• 8:12
  Speaker 5: and Jay understands that they are great baseball players and
• 8:15
  Speaker 5: you got to work tiresly to go find them. And
• 8:18
  Speaker 5: some of them might be right in front of you
• 8:20
  Speaker 5: and household names that you've either played against or know about,
• 8:23
  Speaker 5: and some may be out there just waiting to be found.

  Speaker 5: And I'll tell you what, it's hard to beat Jay
• 8:30
  Speaker 5: Johnson and finding those guys because he is relentless.

  Speaker 6: most of our time with you today like celebrating LSU,

  Speaker 6: the individuals, the team effort, everything, But we have to

  Speaker 6: talk about Coastal just because you were there calling the
• 8:43
  Speaker 6: game yesterday, first inning head coach, first base coach for
• 8:47
  Speaker 6: them get tossed out of the game for arguing balls
• 8:49
  Speaker 6: and strikes. A lot happened there, a lot that we
• 8:51
  Speaker 6: couldn't see from watching from the comfort of our own house.
• 8:55
  Speaker 1: What did you see?
• 8:56
  Speaker 6: How did that all play out in your eyes? And yeah,
• 8:59
  Speaker 6: just talk to us about that whole decision from from
• 9:02
  Speaker 6: both sides of the side and the coaches side.

  Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I've thought about it, and I have,

  Speaker 5: you know, I have. I have been one of the proponents,

  Speaker 5: good or bad, right or wrong, that if we're gonna
• 9:13
  Speaker 5: put rules in the rule book, let's use them, because
• 9:17
  Speaker 5: I think it does no good to interpret rules or
• 9:20
  Speaker 5: decide when or not when or win or not to
• 9:24
  Speaker 5: enforce a rule. So I'm I'm that's just the way

  Speaker 5: I am. And I know everybody says, well, you know

  Speaker 5: they're celebrating, they show emotion. Well, you know, they've been
• 9:34
  Speaker 5: playing sports for a long long time and and there's
• 9:37
  Speaker 5: ways to do that without going over the line. Now,
• 9:39
  Speaker 5: having said all of that, at the moment, we really
• 9:42
  Speaker 5: had no idea, you know, what the kerfluffle was all
• 9:46
  Speaker 5: about to start with. Now we have found out a
• 9:48
  Speaker 5: little bit more. Who knows if we'll ever find out
• 9:50
  Speaker 5: the true story, but it started with the strike call
• 9:55
  Speaker 5: on the still attempt, which is a pitch to the
• 9:58
  Speaker 5: plate called strike, and apparently the first base coach, who
• 10:02
  Speaker 5: also was ejected started arguing balls and strikes and the
• 10:06
  Speaker 5: angel compost gave a warning. Well, that warning went to
• 10:09
  Speaker 5: the first base coach, and apparently the head coach didn't
• 10:12
  Speaker 5: like the warning, and so when he came out it
• 10:15
  Speaker 5: appeared as though, wow, that was a quick cuse. And
• 10:18
  Speaker 5: I agree it was a pretty quick fuse and a
• 10:20
  Speaker 5: trigger finger. But there are a couple of things. We
• 10:23
  Speaker 5: have a meeting with the head of umpires every early February.
• 10:26
  Speaker 5: They invite the media and they go over new rules
• 10:29
  Speaker 5: and what the emphasis will be. And every single year
• 10:31
  Speaker 5: I've been on that call at some point, usually in
• 10:34
  Speaker 5: the beginning. Guys, as we talk about all the time,
• 10:38
  Speaker 5: profanity and arguing balls and strikes are the quickest way
• 10:42
  Speaker 5: to be ejected by an umpire. I mean, that's just
• 10:45
  Speaker 5: the way it is. So again, who knows about whether
• 10:48
  Speaker 5: or not it should have been done. What I do
• 10:50
  Speaker 5: know is if there are rules and the radio guy
• 10:54
  Speaker 5: knows that, the things that get you sent quickly, I'm
• 10:58
  Speaker 5: pretty sure all coaches know that.

  Speaker 4: I mean, CV, we've all seen Bull Durham as well.

  Speaker 4: I mean, come on, we know the rules.

  Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's the thing when when coach Johnson

  Speaker 5: rarely gets tossed. I always joke with him because it's
• 11:10
  Speaker 5: always a shock because Jay, I mean, he can get animated,
• 11:14
  Speaker 5: but most of the time he does not use profanity
• 11:17
  Speaker 5: and he just wants an explanation or to get his
• 11:19
  Speaker 5: point across. So when he gets tost it's like, whoa,
• 11:21
  Speaker 5: What's what happened?

  Speaker 4: I mean, he showed a great restraint in the Collegeural Series.

  Speaker 4: I mean they're in the first game when Dickinson gets
• 11:29
  Speaker 4: called out for leaning into the pitch and you can
• 11:31
  Speaker 4: see him ask the umpires I can ask a question.
• 11:33
  Speaker 4: He goes no, he goes just a question. He's like no,
• 11:35
  Speaker 4: and he goes okay. And then because he wanted to
• 11:38
  Speaker 4: come out because like like a lot of us were like, hey,
• 11:40
  Speaker 4: we want to know about that call, and he asked it,
• 11:43
  Speaker 4: he got shut down and you could tell he really
• 11:45
  Speaker 4: wanted to go out there. But he knew if you
• 11:48
  Speaker 4: argue against the replay, you're probably going to get tossed.

  Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, and he said that, he goes, You know,
• 11:53
  Speaker 5: I quickly was reminded that once they review and you
• 11:56
  Speaker 5: challenge and then they come back with whatever the ruling is,
• 11:59
  Speaker 5: if you don't like it, there is no arguing, and

  Speaker 5: again he was subject to getting ran had he done it.

  Speaker 5: And again I hate to sound like the old man

  Speaker 5: on the rocking chair on the front porch yelling at

  Speaker 5: all the young kids, but at the end of the day,

  Speaker 5: I think it can't go without saying we want to

  Speaker 5: win every game at LSU. We certainly want to win titles,

  Speaker 5: and nobody is more thrilled than all of us about
• 12:21
  Speaker 5: what took place over the last several days and certainly yesterday.

  Speaker 5: But I don't want to get lost in all of this.

  Speaker 5: The reason I think we're in the situation and get
• 12:30
  Speaker 5: to enjoy all of this is because of coach j Johnson.

  Speaker 5: And it's not only the way he goes about trying
• 12:37
  Speaker 5: to make LSU better every single day, which is exactly
• 12:40
  Speaker 5: what he does. He has no hobbies, and again that's
• 12:46
  Speaker 5: something I joke with him about. Nick Saban and his
• 12:50
  Speaker 5: heyday had more hobbies than no doubt, but his respect
• 12:56
  Speaker 5: for the game, his respect for the rule, his respect
• 12:59
  Speaker 5: for the opponents. Again, umpires are human. Coaches make mistakes,

  Speaker 5: players make mistakes. But I think I'm thrilled and so
• 13:08
  Speaker 5: proud that Jay Johnson is the leader of this program.

  Speaker 5: The way he handles himself in every aspect, and you
• 13:15
  Speaker 5: know what, that's just the way it ought to be.

  Speaker 5: And I'm just glad that he's the one in charge
• 13:22
  Speaker 5: of Tiger baseball.

  Speaker 6: Voice of the old adage in football is defense wins championships,

  Speaker 6: and certainly in baseball defense, but more importantly, pitching three

  Speaker 6: pitchers in two games versus Coastal. Celebrate these three guys

  Speaker 6: what they did? Tell us, like where, you know, they

  Speaker 6: go out there pitch amazing games. They have great stuff,

  Speaker 6: great defense behind them, But like, where does this rank
• 13:47
  Speaker 6: for you in a two game span of pitching performances

  Speaker 6: at LSU.

  Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's it's one that certainly brings the

  Speaker 5: discussion for good reason the way you bring it up,

  Speaker 5: and I think I think most everybody would feel the same way.

  Speaker 5: in the three trips I've been to om all blessed

  Speaker 5: to be with LSU to see the ace so to

  Speaker 5: speak in this case for this team, really two aces.

  Speaker 5: I don't want Ty Floyd's performance to be forgot because

  Speaker 5: he was, you know, number two in the weekend rotation

  Speaker 5: and he went out and did a job obviously here
• 14:24
  Speaker 5: in twenty twenty three, but we didn't see Alex Lang
• 14:26
  Speaker 5: in the Championship series in seventeen. And even though I
• 14:30
  Speaker 5: think we played some mind games of Florida, we didn't
• 14:33
  Speaker 5: see Paul Schemes against the Gators in the Championship Series.

  Speaker 5: So that was the excitement of Okay, Coastal is going
• 14:39
  Speaker 5: to have their best, even though they went backwards second
• 14:43
  Speaker 5: and first, and LSU's going to have their best. And
• 14:48
  Speaker 5: you know, I had a bunch of people text me that.

  Speaker 5: Obviously I was familiar with Coastal, having played them for
• 14:53
  Speaker 5: years at Georgia Southern in several sports, having lived in
• 14:57
  Speaker 5: South Carolina for about thirteen years, was well aware of Coastal.

  Speaker 5: But I had friends texting me going, hey, man, you know,
• 15:04
  Speaker 5: best of luck. This coaster of things can really pitch

  Speaker 5: it and there's no doubt their numbers back that up.

  Speaker 5: But I had to quickly remind them, Yeah, the Tigers
• 15:11
  Speaker 5: can pitch it pretty good too, and and Kate Anderson

  Speaker 5: and Anthony Iansen and and again Chay shures to me

  Speaker 5: just stands out because of what he did here in Omaha.

  Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean those two guys back to back,

  Speaker 5: you had you had to like the Tigers. I think

  Speaker 5: that's why everybody and even the boys out west and

  Speaker 5: in Senn City, they knew.

  Speaker 4: Seev when you can kind of take a look back

  Speaker 4: at some of you know, the performances from some of

  Speaker 4: your biggest names, and the way that you know it

  Speaker 4: wasn't always going their way and they still found a

  Speaker 4: way when they needed to. Bear Jones multiple times like

  Speaker 4: Ethan Fryer goes into a small slump and then he

  Speaker 4: on base yesterday, like we could go like over many

  Speaker 4: many performances like that was one of the things for

  Speaker 4: me as well, even when it wasn't going well, like

  Speaker 4: Stanfield to his standard, it wasn't going well for him,

  Speaker 4: he comes up, he gets the biggest hit of his life,

  Speaker 4: drives in two runs Like that part to me was

  Speaker 4: probably more impressive than anything like even if it wasn't

  Speaker 4: going your way, there was no I'm gonna feel sorry

  Speaker 4: for myself, I'm gonna blame somebody else. Whenever the moment

  Speaker 4: had to be done, they got it done every single time,

  Speaker 4: even if they were over their last.

  Speaker 5: Eleven Yeah, I mean, and I think it starts with

  Speaker 5: the roster that was built. And you know, I know

  Speaker 5: that sounds simple, but again, you got to give credit

  Speaker 5: to the staff to assemble this team because there was

  Speaker 5: enough talent and I mean not way more talent on

  Speaker 5: this roster than a lot of teams can dream of having.

  Speaker 5: And because of that, Coach Johnson could rely on certain

  Speaker 5: guys in a certain situations. And me think about some

  Speaker 5: of the pinch hitting opportunities that John Pearson had as
• 16:56
