- 0:00Every Tuesday we get an opportunity to speak with
- 0:02Michael Hoffer from Hoffer's High School Sports, getting a
- 0:04peek at the Southern Maine sports season now that we're in
- 0:08the spring officially. Appreciate you being with us as
- 0:10always. Mike, how are things?
- 0:12It's a good man, good to chat with you.
- 0:14It is indeed good to chat you. So I actually had a question
- 0:16lined up for you, which I have to amend a little bit if you
- 0:19don't know. OK, no whatever.
- 0:20So. I'm going to start with baseball
- 0:22because of course I do. But I was looking through both
- 0:27your reports, of course, are just the general box scores of
- 0:30of our arch nemesis Greeley, which, you know, of course they
- 0:35play great baseball And I do love seeing kids play good
- 0:37baseball, but it does drive me a little a little crazy.
- 0:39But I'm looking at these box scores, man, and it's like 17
- 0:43runs, eighteen runs, eighteen runs.
- 0:45They beat Brunswick 10. Nothing like they're just on
- 0:48this run. And I was like, oh, Mike, is
- 0:50this the greatest baseball team that has ever been assembled?
- 0:52And then they stumbled a little bit.
- 0:54They played they played Edward Little and they lost 10 to 5 S
- 0:57So I guess my question for you was originally going to be like,
- 0:59just how good is this team? And like, is this going to be a
- 1:02repeat state champion? And then I guess amending that
- 1:05question is, but wait, is there a little more to the story?
- 1:09Yeah, I mean, they were certainly hitting the cover off
- 1:11the ball to start. And, you know, there's no shame
- 1:14in a Class B team losing to a Class A contender, I think is
- 1:17one of several games in a row. And, you know, for my money, I
- 1:20still think Greeley's A-Team to beat in Class BS.
- 1:23We've got a long way to go, but certainly they're off to a great
- 1:26start. And, you know, and you can
- 1:28certainly relate to this generally, that the great
- 1:30Greeley teams are led by their pitching staff and, you know,
- 1:33they score enough runs to win, but usually it's their pitching
- 1:36staff that shuts you down. You know, so far this year
- 1:38they're just, you know, the ball right and left and scoring in
- 1:41the teams every game until yesterday.
- 1:43So it's a little bit different. I think they're going to get
- 1:46tested. They they have a interesting
- 1:48game tomorrow at home against Cape Elizabeth.
- 1:50Hopefully we'll get it in. I know there's a chance of rain,
- 1:53but you know, that'll be a good test because Cape loss are
- 1:55opener to Freiburg and they've won every game since and that
- 1:58rivalry needs no introduction. It's very similar to the
- 2:00Greeley, Yarmouth, Yarmouth Cape, you know, these ancient
- 2:03rivals. It doesn't really matter what
- 2:04the records are. The games are usually very
- 2:06close. So, you know, Greely certainly
- 2:08off to a great start, but it's going to get tougher and I think
- 2:12a loss early in the season isn't the worst thing either.
- 2:14Bring them back down to earth a little bit, right?
- 2:15I mean, they haven't lost a game in a while.
- 2:17They were beating everyone easily.
- 2:19So I think, you know, maybe that that's a good thing in the long
- 2:22run for them do. You have a sense of this is kind
- 2:24of an interesting question to ask you of how a program like
- 2:27theirs is able to so consistently be at the top,
- 2:29Because when you're talking about school and you're talking
- 2:32about, you know, high school athletes and whatnot, I mean,
- 2:34it's it's so it's so dependent on like, Hey, who lives in that
- 2:38town in a given year? Like it's like the parents and
- 2:40or do they even like the sport? And sometimes that drifts a
- 2:44little up and a little bit down, but they've been consistent for
- 2:47a very long time at the absolute top.
- 2:50You know, how how does a program like that, not just them, but
- 2:52others maintain that level of consistency over the years?
- 2:56Is it like a specifically designed youth sports pipeline
- 2:59that feeds it or like what what goes on there you think?
- 3:03Yeah, I mean, I think it's two things.
- 3:04I think definitely the the programs that are most
- 3:06successful, you know, have have the strong continuity from the
- 3:10youth programs right up to the high school levels.
- 3:12And, you know, a lot of times the coaches at the lower levels
- 3:15don't get enough credit for the job they do, you know, churning
- 3:19out this talent year after year. And and really it's usually not
- 3:22just the high school program, it's the whole youth community
- 3:25program all the way on up. It's kind of on the same page,
- 3:28you know, philosophically speaking.
- 3:29So that's really important. And then, you know, you look at
- 3:32a program like Greeley and they've had the coaching
- 3:34continuity. You know, Derek Souls been there
- 3:36since the turn of the century, won multiple state titles.
- 3:39You know, he just wins year after year after year.
- 3:41He's got a great coaching staff. You know, Bobby Anthony is is I
- 3:45think in the Main Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 3:46He was the coach before Soul and they had a lot of success with
- 3:49the head coach, had a lot of successes and assistant, you
- 3:53know, Miles Hunt was there for years as the pitching coach and
- 3:55they had pitching greatness year after year after year.
- 3:58So, you know, and it's no, no surprise, you know, you look at
- 4:01the success Yarmouth had with Mark Halstead all those years.
- 4:05So I think the continuity is, is key.
- 4:07And and for Greeley, you just know year after year, these kids
- 4:10are going to be well schooled. They're going to be be very
- 4:12solid fundamentally, you know, it helps to have some great arms
- 4:16and they would have a great pitching staff again this year.
- 4:18They've they've just had some injury issues.
- 4:20So that's a constant year after year after year.
- 4:22And you know, they know when they get into big games, they
- 4:24know how to win them, and more often than not, they do.
- 4:27So let's talk about the rest of the baseball picture around
- 4:31southern Maine here, especially in the next week or so.
- 4:34Obviously a lot of big games coming up and we've seen a lot
- 4:37of good games in the last week or so.
- 4:39And I believe actually Speaking of Greeley, all right, you had
- 4:41that. That was the athlete of the
- 4:42week, was from that baseball team.
- 4:44So yes, I was saw me their their junior who had the seven hits in
- 4:48two games and also a pitch to Gem against Brunswick, you know,
- 4:52pitched a shot out and he had the hit that induced the mercy
- 4:55rule and that was a walk off. So yeah, he had a a a huge week
- 4:59both at the plate and with his arm.
- 5:02So tell me a little bit about what you're what else you're
- 5:04seeing around baseball, you know, in the in the states in
- 5:07last week and and going into this week.
- 5:10Yeah, I mean, Class 8 S is kind of as we thought, you know, a
- 5:13lot of teams are kind of beating up on each other.
- 5:16And I'd have to say the biggest surprise at this point is
- 5:18Chevres. They won three games last year.
- 5:20They've already eclipsed that. They put up a crazy 38 runs the
- 5:24other day in a win over Westbrook.
- 5:26I'm not sure exactly how that happens.
- 5:29You know how you can get, you know, I think the difference
- 5:30with is the mercy you rule in baseball is you have to play 5
- 5:33innings no matter what. Wearing softball games can be
- 5:36over in three if there's a 15 run deficit.
- 5:39But anyway, yeah, 38 runs in that one.
- 5:41They rallied from A5 nothing deficit to beat Noble the next
- 5:44day. They had that huge come from a
- 5:46high win over TA to start. So, you know, they've really
- 5:48been a surprise I think in the minds of many, which since Ryan
- 5:53Cop took over and it's a program that's that just completely
- 5:56turned things around. And it's not like they brought a
- 5:58bunch of new kids in to speak of.
- 6:00You know, they've got a couple additions, but for the most part
- 6:03it's just the kids who have come of age and you know, success to
- 6:06get success. You see this in sports all the
- 6:09time. Teams have early success and
- 6:11start to believe and then then, then things just mushroom from
- 6:13there. So they're right there and then
- 6:15you've got that. All the other teams, we kind of
- 6:17thought so Portland, TA, Scarborough, Gorham, you know,
- 6:21they're all going to start playing each other too.
- 6:23So we're going to get some some good matchups here in the weeks
- 6:25to come. And, you know, hopefully the
- 6:27weather will cooperate there because I'm looking forward to
- 6:28that. Did I see Mr. Hoffer, that
- 6:33Chevris beat Westbrook 38 to 1? Did I see that?
- 6:37That is. That is correct.
- 6:39I don't think I've ever seen a score like that.
- 6:41No, I, I, I don't either. And you know, like, you know,
- 6:44like I said, I think, you know, a lot of that has to do with,
- 6:46you know, baseball having different mercy rule criteria
- 6:50than softball does, where, you know, 15 run deficit after three
- 6:53innings in softball in the game, but you have to get the whole
- 6:56full 5 in in baseball. And, you know, there weren't a
- 6:59ton of walks. There were there were some,
- 7:00there were some errors and just a lot of hitting and I guess it
- 7:04was just one of those really, really bad days if you look at
- 7:06it from a Westbrook perspective. Yeah, I guess so.
- 7:08You know, interesting question to ask you.
- 7:10What happened to Westbrook over the years too, Because they used
- 7:12to have a very strong baseball program.
- 7:14And when my older son was going through, you know, we used to
- 7:16run into them and even Little League tournaments and stuff.
- 7:18And it was just a buzz saw. And that of course has has kind
- 7:23of tipped upside down a little bit in the last few years.
- 7:25I know they had some problems with their program and some
- 7:27coaching issues and a scandal or two here or there, whatever.
- 7:30Is that really what ultimately has has kind of taken the wheels
- 7:33off that program? Yeah, I think, I mean, it
- 7:36doesn't take much when you when you have kids that are, you
- 7:38know, no longer part of the program and for whatever reason
- 7:41are playing and you have multiple coaching changes and
- 7:44you know, they've got Andy Coulombs, the coach now.
- 7:46He was a Kennebunk, had some success there.
- 7:48I think it's just a case. It's going to be a little while
- 7:50to get that program back you. Got to rebuild it.
- 7:53Yeah. I mean, you look at what
- 7:54Westbrook's done, though in other sports and, you know,
- 7:56they're hoping to build on the momentum from football, that
- 7:59unexpected state title. You know, basketball had a very
- 8:01successful season on the boys side.
- 8:03So, you know, there has been some success in boys sports.
- 8:06I think it's just going to take a little while to get back to
- 8:08that competitive level there in baseball.
- 8:11Turning your attention to softball and what's been going
- 8:13on over on that side, I know you kind of mentioned it in passing
- 8:15with other rules work and whatnot, but what did you see in
- 8:17the last week and what are we looking forward to this week in
- 8:20the world of softball? Well, clearly Shevers has a
- 8:23separated itself and you know, I think they were the favorite
- 8:26coming in, but they already have wins over top contenders
- 8:29Westbrook, Bonnie Eagle and yesterday Windham.
- 8:31And you know, Addison Deroche is just continuing to set that bar
- 8:34higher and higher. Really just amazing everything
- 8:37she's done and she's still only a junior.
- 8:40You know, she's a given up one hit, two hits and or none every
- 8:44time out. 17 strikeouts yesterday and a decisive win
- 8:47over Windham. So this service team that fell
- 8:50just short last year looks like they they have what it takes to
- 8:53go all the way. I know they still going to have
- 8:54to beat Windham again. They've got a big test coming up
- 8:57with Gorham on Monday, but so far so good.
- 9:00They just look like world beaters at this point.
- 9:03And in the rainy time that we have left, I'd love to ask you,
- 9:05of course, about lacrosse, what's been going on over there
- 9:08and what you've seen in the last week or two in there.
- 9:11Because, you know, I think the last couple times we've talked,
- 9:13you know, very early in the season, we're just starting to
- 9:15learn some lessons and see some things kind of getting into a
- 9:18little bit more of the heat of the moment now.
- 9:19So tell me more about what we've seen.
- 9:21Yeah, I mean, I think the big news last week was Thornton
- 9:24Academy ending Wyndham's a long win streak when the defending
- 9:27champs look really, really good going into the season and
- 9:31started strong. But they went down to TA the
- 9:33other day and the biggest regular season win for Thornton
- 9:35in a long, long time. And I think that boosts them
- 9:38right up the ladder up. But so far, Kennebunk, you know,
- 9:40clearly the team to beat. They had a nice win at Yarmouth
- 9:43last night, pulling away in the second-half.
- 9:46And you know, they get it done offensively.
- 9:48Defensively, they've lost. They've fallen short of a state
- 9:51title the last two years. They're very eager to get back
- 9:54to what they feel like is their rightful perch and they're
- 9:56looking really good. And on the boys side, you know,
- 9:59TA and Falmouth haven't really been tested so far.
- 10:01I think clearly they're the two best teams.
- 10:04You know, they're going to start having some tougher games as
- 10:06time goes on here, but they they look really good game.
- 10:10I'm looking forward to Saturday during in Yarmouth.
- 10:12So I think are probably the next teams on the list there in Class
- 10:15A. They're going to match up and
- 10:17you know, for years that would have been an inner class game,
- 10:19but now with the Yarmouth and Class A, you know, that's going
- 10:22to be an interesting test for them.
- 10:25So yeah, I mean, the best is still to come.
- 10:26We still don't know exactly how good these top teams are.
- 10:29I think just because they really haven't been seriously tested,
- 10:32but that's going to change. All right.
- 10:35I guess I already asked about Athlete of the Week.
- 10:36So I guess the final question I have for you is just about the
- 10:38Super 6 poles and if there's any, any news you want to break
- 10:41there, but worth checking in on. We're going to have new number
- 10:45ones in both baseball and girls lacrosse this week, so be sure
- 10:48to check those out. Those will be out in a couple
- 10:49hours. It's a tease if I've ever heard
- 10:51one. Make sure you go by Hoffers High
- 10:52School sports.com and subscribe so that that tease can be made
- 10:55good and you can see that stuff ASAP.
- 10:57Appreciate it, as always, Mike, Thanks so much for spending time
- 10:59with us and we'll talk again next week.
