- 0:33SPEAKER_04: Any time, any place, I can see your face.
- 0:36SPEAKER_04: You were that special one that I've been waiting for.
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: And I hope you're looking for someone like me.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: I can leave for any in the night.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: Everything so sweet in your eyes.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: I feel there's so much inside.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: In the night, dreams in light.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: I want to see you standing there.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: In the night, dreams in light.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome to the Overclock Dream Mix Podcast, the best source of OCR news and music that you can listen to while piloting Magitech Armor.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: This is episode number six, which is also the number of the best Final Fantasy game.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: In this episode, we'll be covering the news and new releases of April 2025.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Our play in music is Dreams Dreams, Disco Nights Mix, from Nights into Dreams by Akuma Joe Belmont and Level 99.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Fantastic Game Knights.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: I know at the time of release it wasn't exactly what Sega fans and Saturn owners really wanted out of Sega, but it holds up incredibly well.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: I played through it again recently.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: The character models are pretty dated, but the stylized environments and gorgeous flying animation really hold up.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: The gameplay?
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: If you like arcade-style score attack games, this is one for the ages.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: I sometimes wonder if it was designed for the arcade and ported to consoles later.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And of course that's soundtrack.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: So catchy and dancy and uplifting all at the same time.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: It's basically most of the same sound team that worked on Sonic Adventure, so if you like that, you'll like knights too.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Wow! Have I been doing this for half a year now?
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, not go on and on about knights, the podcast.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: To my listeners, thank you.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: From the bottom of my heart, I do it all for both of you.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Last month was a doozy of an episode, which makes this month a bit of a mixed bag.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: On the one hand, I have way more breathing room this month.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: On the other hand, we got literally half as much music.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: I do think the abbreviated format for the commentary worked well though, so unless I hear otherwise, I'll continue to keep it shorter than I have in the past.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: And how might I hear otherwise?
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: How can you reach out to me?
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Why through official channels, of course.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Engage with the community, and either post your question on the overclocked remix forums, that's at ocreemix.org slash community, or you can find me as Zach with an exclamation point on the official overclocked remix Discord.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Links on the main page.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Now, on to the news, the Voodoo Queen is gauging interest in a yearly Halloween album.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Sort of like OCR has a yearly Christmas album.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: You do know about the Christmas album, right?
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Anyway, if you want to work on some spoopy tracks, go give the Queen a holler in the Recruit and Collaborate section of the forums.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: The remixer ER, or is that E-A-R?
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Either way, this person is reaching out on the same subform for either a Klonoa Door to Phantom Neal album or an Einhander album.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Because both games are turning 30 soon.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: I never played much Einhander, but man, Klonoa is a work of genius! That's how you bring a 2D platformer to 3D.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I wish Kirby64 had done more of that kind of branching path thing.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Either way, while I go yell at some kids to get off my lawn, you go tell Ear that you're interested.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: By the time you're hearing this, voting will have closed on GameSetMash 3.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: This entry in the GSM series has teams of remixers mashing up the music of two different series, both with amazing soundtracks, both composed by the one, the only Yuzo Koshiro, Streets of Rage, and Etrian Odyssey.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: It's more FM synth than you can shake a stick at.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, this is all we get.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: But that is 18 tracks of MashUp Goodness.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Go download your very own MP3s of the tracks today in the public voting subforum of the forums.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Today's news music was Linear Groove from Tetris by Ben Briggs.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: On to the new releases.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: We're starting out with a pretty rad track.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Because it's a Rad Racer.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Highway Star 20XD6 by 744.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: But not the numerals, like all spelled out.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: You get it.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I did not know that the iconic Stinco Man 20XD six theme was from Rad Racer.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: But actually, let's back up and explain for the young folks what I'm talking about.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: There's this internet cartoon that was pretty popular from roughly 2001 to 2006 called Homestar Runner.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: And there was this anime parody on Homestar Runner called Stinco Man20XD6.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: That's what all the voice samples are from.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Now that you're caught up, I hope you enjoyed this groovy track as much as I did.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Up next, Chipzilla and Emmunator serenade us with a Breath of the Wild track.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Sidon's Serenade.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: As the mixed host points out, we've got the Tripzilla Emulator collab every month of this year.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna start calling them or Emuzilla.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: That's an old caps has come to the party with a Super Street Fighter II turbo track.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Also, all in caps, I'll be able to get it.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Just absolutely nails the groove and the vibe.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Super nostalgic.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Cool, so that's enough chill.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: The man PF has no chill.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: And neither does this Puyo Puyo track.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: So good! Uh, that that's the name of the track.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: The genre of this track is something that was popular on Nikoniko Doga 15 years ago.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: The man PF also cites baby metal as an inspiration.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I've got a fever, and the only thing that can cure it is my doctor prescribed dose of prog metal.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Salef et al.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: are the pharmacists in this metaphor that is going off the rails like some kind of railroad mounted pharmacy.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: And the cure is the Final Fantasy VII track, Stay Away.
- 21:01SPEAKER_07: Doesn't feel right.
- 21:04SPEAKER_07: Cinema faints.
- 21:06SPEAKER_07: Pressure hurts.
- 21:09SPEAKER_07: Melting blood split.
- 22:06SPEAKER_07: I just want to go to the store.
- 23:08SPEAKER_07: What I can do is that we're going to be able to do that.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Straight into my veins.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: And unlike what the song says, it does feel right.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Zalef cites Tool as an inspiration, but the vocals also remind me of the band Lunatic Soul, a side project from the bassist of Riverside.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Zalef did the lyrics, most of the arranging, and most of the vocals.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Zach Parrish played guitar and bass guitar and mastered the track.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: I like my shinobi three tracks.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Like I like my colour.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Dark and groovy.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: The voodoo theme did arrangement.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Which I had to look at.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Which I also had to look at.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: No one can hear you party.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Also the name of this Mario Party.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: There are some heavier sections to be sure, but I wouldn't call this metal.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: I would call it incredible.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: And today, on I Learned It From OCR, Minus World mentions composing this via Kishotenkatsu, which is an East Asian narrative form.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Sort of like in the West, we have the three-act structure of introduction, rising action, and resolution.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Kishotenkatsu is introduction, development, and twist and conclusion.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Sort of walks that line between heavy prog rock and prog metal.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Lucas Guimareas cites Dream Theater as an inspiration.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: And speaking of Lucas, he did an arrangement that played bass clarinet with three different kinds of sacks.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: Programmed a couple digital instruments and a line of the brass and vocals.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: A lot of people say that the Chrono series is Yasunore Mitsuda's best work.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: I myself am partial to the Xeno games.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: But here is a whole group of people who didn't forget that Mitsuda also wrote all the music for Mario Party.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Mel Decision did the arrangement.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: Silver the Jackal played guitar.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: All that wonderful percussion was performed by Deluxe Dolomite.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: Last but not least, in a rare solo appearance without Jalad, Darmok played bass.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: It is unclear from the crediting whether Dharmac played bass at Tanagra.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: Who wants a synth solo?
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: JN Wake brought extra.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: Smash those records from Super Smash Brothers Melee.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: In fact, I kinda hated Break the Targets.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: Musically, at least, this mix sorta reminds me of Sonic 3's Hydro City Zone.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Let's bring the energy down a little with Door to the Unknown from the Final Fantasy Legend by Prophetic Music.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: The Final Fantasy Legend.
- 50:38SPEAKER_01: The only game in the series with a the in the title.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: The original is one of my favorite tracks in just about any Game Boy game, and this is so far outside what I would expect from a remix in the best possible way.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Next, Whispy Woodwinds is passing along the Castle Whispers from Kingdom Hearts.
- 56:08SPEAKER_01: Something about only wind instruments gives the track an ethereal feel.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: And the original is a Yokoshimamura track, so you know it's a good starting place.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Lucas Guimares was in charge of the arrangement, mixing, and mastering.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Andrew Gossett played bassoon and did some editing.
- 56:25SPEAKER_01: Gamer of the Winds provided some wins, specifically through a flute.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Stephen Higby played Elto Sax and Clarinet.
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: We're going to bring the energy back up for a couple of tracks, starting with Avenda from Earthbound by Dumenev.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: It's a good source too.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: For Tibanev, Avenda means for sale.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Because you can buy the foresale sign in Tucson.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: A rare Dragon Quest track.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_01: From Dragon Warrior Four specifically, Audiomancer has brought us Twisted Sisters with a Z.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_01: I was expecting more of a hair metal rock anthem.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: No, we get a dancy four-on-the-floor electronic track.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_01: This is audio managers in the first remix.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: After a total of ten submissions and resubmissions.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: Perseverance! Up next we've got a man after my own heart, because Michael Hudak has remixed a track from an under-remixed, underloved, underappreciated Sega RPG masterpiece.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_01: Here is Sacralid Shroud from my beloved disguise of Arcadia.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_01: One of the more popular tracks in the game.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_01: This is a rather mellow, melancholy piece that you first hear, I believe, in the ancient temple dungeon mixes.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: This is a dreamy mix that does its own thing while staying true to the vibe of the source material.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: I'd also be remiss to mention that this is the first track celebrating 420.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_01: So if you want mellow tracks to enjoy with a gummy or a smoke, I probably should have told you about that before this track.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_01: Next up, former OCR podcast host, I know Cascatalo, is keeping it chill and green with a ninja guiding track.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_01: Ninjan Grolli.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_01: Or maybe Ninjon Grolli.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_01: Since that's almost assuredly Finnish.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_01: In a good way, though.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_01: Our next track continues the hippie high holiday streak with First Death of the Heart from Disco Elysium.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_01: Warning, though, I try to keep this podcast PG, but if you have impressionable ears listening, skip the next six minutes.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: Great track, but you might not want to hear some of it repeated by children.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_07: I I had a really nice time last night.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_06: Nice.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_07: I had a the best fucking night of my entire fucking life since the body.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_01: The opening is all sort of hazy and psychedelic, and then that transitions to a more straightforward rock groove.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_01: And then about halfway through the track, suddenly it's a flaming lips track! Lead vocalist Corey Johnson sounds a lot like Wayne Coyne did about 30 years ago.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_01: The man PF did arrangement, sequencing, mixing, and electric guitar.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_01: Zach Chapman played the bass and wrote the lyrics.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_01: In addition to lead vocals, Corey Johnson played both acoustic and electric guitar.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_01: Cece Enui provided the other vocals.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_01: I would also like to point out, because it's the best band name ever, that Cece Enui plays accordion for the Tonberries.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_01: Up next is our last Groovy 420 track from a game all about spacemen and carrots that wander around and carry things.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_01: Mo Urgan has remixed Pikmin in A Man from Outer Space.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_01: But how is this the first Pikmin track on OCR?
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_01: That's insane.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_01: Pikmin has a great soundtrack.
- 1:25:10SPEAKER_01: Well, it was up to Newcomber Moorgan to write this wrong.
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_01: They have, however, made the classic newcomer mistake of setting the bar to high.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_01: Next up is a funky jam from DJ J Rad, the Caterkillers Jam from Sonic the Hedgehog.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_01: Newcomer DJ J.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_01: Rad describes this track as what he imagines the caterkillers listen to as they slink along the grassy hills.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_01: The caterkiller, by the way, being that purple enemy that you can't really jump on in Marble Zone.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_01: We're closing out strong with the prog metal you know I love, Saving Private Raynor from Starcraft.
- 1:32:54SPEAKER_01: So I completely missed StarCraft.
- 1:32:58SPEAKER_01: To this day, I still haven't really played much of it.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_01: What I've heard of the soundtrack, though, top-notch.
- 1:33:04SPEAKER_01: And this remix is also top-notch.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_01: Heavy guitars, synth solos, genre shifts, all the good prog stuff.
- 1:33:12SPEAKER_01: Jabbo played guitar, Ivan Haxdock played bass, and as usual, Jan Wake didn't really credit himself, so I'm going to assume he did everything else.
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_01: Today we're listening to the soundtrack to G.
- 1:35:52SPEAKER_01: Darius, the pioneering 1997 arcade remote from Taito, with music from Taito's house band, Zuntata.
- 1:36:01SPEAKER_01: Zach, you may be thinking to yourself, are you ever going to cover a game that isn't a Shmo?
- 1:36:07SPEAKER_01: Or at least a Shamo that isn't Darius?
- 1:36:10SPEAKER_01: And the answer is maybe.
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_01: After I'm through making you all listen to this wonderful giant robot official game music.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_01: The music to Judarius is certainly avant-garde.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_01: A little industrial, a little experimental.
- 1:36:25SPEAKER_01: My wife tells me it sounds like two different bands trying to make music with construction equipment simultaneously.
- 1:36:31SPEAKER_01: A little uncomfortable and off-putting at first, but the more you play, the more it grows on you.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_01: This opening track is one of the boss themes.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_01: The one before you fight the obligatory series staple giant sea legant, Queen Fossil.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_01: The stage music is fine, but this game in particular, I love the boss music.
- 1:36:51SPEAKER_01: Let's listen to another one.
- 1:36:52SPEAKER_01: This is stage.
- 1:37:59SPEAKER_01: And the percussion that sounds like heavy breathing.
- 1:38:03SPEAKER_01: I don't have much else to say about this one, other than it is in fact the music that plays when my phone timer goes off.
- 1:38:09SPEAKER_01: Nothing gets more hyper laundry.
- 1:38:12SPEAKER_01: Let's actually play a stage theme.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_01: But first, let's play the song that plays during the score tally and loading between the stages.
- 1:38:21SPEAKER_01: Here's one down, followed by the final stage theme, chimera two.
- 1:38:27SPEAKER_01: Meditation.
- 1:44:57SPEAKER_01: A must for Darius.
- 1:45:10SPEAKER_01: Finally, at the last level, there is some rousing, catchy music to push you through to the last boss.
- 1:45:44SPEAKER_01: I hope some spring showers brought Mayflowers for you all, unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case, I hope some fall showers brought you whatever it is you look forward to in the fall.
- 1:45:55SPEAKER_01: Pumpkin spice?
- 1:45:57SPEAKER_01: Has that made it to the Southern Hemisphere?
- 1:46:00SPEAKER_01: In any case, it's time to say goodbye.
- 1:46:02SPEAKER_01: Our outdoor music is See you next time.
- 1:46:05SPEAKER_01: Water from Final Fantasy V by Dark Sword.
- 1:46:09SPEAKER_01: If you have questions or comments about the podcast, you can leave them on the Overclock forums or on the Discord.
- 1:46:15SPEAKER_01: Links to both of which you can find at HTTPS colon slash slash OCRemix.org.
- 1:46:22SPEAKER_01: And speaking of that main page, that's also where you'll find the Patreon.
- 1:46:26SPEAKER_01: If this podcast inspired you to spend money, that's where you should do it.
- 1:46:30SPEAKER_01: I won't see a cent, but I do this for love of remix, and every dollar to that Patreon is another dollar keeping the best video game music community on the planet up and running.
- 1:46:41SPEAKER_01: Minus whatever kind of Patreon takes.
- 1:46:43SPEAKER_01: So I guess it's like OCR gets 70 cents or something.
- 1:46:46SPEAKER_01: Last but not least, for all the new listeners, we have a bit of a tradition here.
- 1:46:50SPEAKER_01: Going all the way back to the mid-2000s and the very first incarnation of this podcast.
- 1:46:56SPEAKER_01: VG DJ, hosted by Zircon and I see Drake.
