- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, joined
- 0:02Speaker 1: by Seth Greenberg of the ESPN, A longtime college coach himself.
- 0:06Speaker 1: He knows the game inside and out. He loves the
- 0:09Speaker 1: game and that's why we love him. Listen, Braylan Mullins, Seth,
- 0:16Speaker 1: have you seen players like this come along in your
- 0:18Speaker 1: time where you look at him and you say, man,
- 0:21Speaker 1: this guy has so much acumen for the game of basketball.
- 0:25Speaker 2: To me, is such a joy to.
- 0:27Speaker 1: See that, and he's only just emerging now in the
- 0:30Speaker 1: last half dozen games.
- 0:33Speaker 3: It makes hard plays look easy. He reads the defense,
- 0:36Speaker 3: whether it's as a passer or as a scorer. He
- 0:37Speaker 3: reads defense whether it's on the bounce or off the ball.
- 0:41Speaker 3: He plays at different paces. The thing that he doesn't
- 0:46Speaker 3: get enough credit for is he's an elite defender. He's
- 0:49Speaker 3: got really good off ball defensive presence. He's got really
- 0:52Speaker 3: long arms, he's got good anticipation. He's got a little
- 0:55Speaker 3: grit to him, a little physicality to him. Even though
- 0:58Speaker 3: he's got that kind of wiry we know he's a
- 1:02Speaker 3: big time shot maker. And I'll tell you what he's
- 1:04Speaker 3: got onions. And when I say by that, this summer
- 1:07Speaker 3: the first scrimmage they had this summer. I went over
- 1:10Speaker 3: watch the scrimmage when they were going up and down,
- 1:12Speaker 3: Brolins volved and his first shot he missed wide left.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I thought I was at a Florida State Miami football game.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, he was wide left, and I'm
- 1:22Speaker 3: going oho, you know, like the temperature raising, and some
- 1:24Speaker 3: people in the state, you know here watching, you know,
- 1:27Speaker 3: maybe you know I've seen him in practice. Maybe this
- 1:29Speaker 3: is you know, this is part of the process. He
- 1:31Speaker 3: proceeded to make his next seven threes.
- 1:35Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, and it was just like boom boom,
- 1:38Speaker 4: boom boom. But it's not just the shot making. It's
- 1:42Speaker 4: the floor game.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Like he made a pass the other day and I
- 1:46Speaker 3: forget who was against where he caught an outlet pass,
- 1:49Speaker 3: and as he caught it, he made the advance pass
- 1:52Speaker 3: right in the same movement. He saw the play early.
- 1:56Speaker 3: His ability to move the defense with his eyes. He's
- 1:59Speaker 3: almost like a corner back when he has the ball.
- 2:01Speaker 3: And you know, you talk about the quarterbacks moving the
- 2:04Speaker 3: defensive backs and the linebackers and everyone else with their eyes.
- 2:07Speaker 3: He has the ability to move people with his eyes.
- 2:09Speaker 3: He's also got the ability to score three levels, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: again not being just a three point shooter. It's also
- 2:15Speaker 3: got the ability to play off ball screens and then
- 2:18Speaker 3: read the help defenders.
- 2:19Speaker 4: And you know, it's easy to.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Read the guy that's hedging. It's easy to read the
- 2:24Speaker 3: ball side defender in terms of whether he's going to
- 2:26Speaker 3: shrink or whether he's going to stay home. But we're
- 2:31Speaker 3: real good players, the players that really have an understanding
- 2:34Speaker 3: of how to play. They read the weak side tag,
- 2:37Speaker 3: they read the weak side help. They read the action
- 2:41Speaker 3: on the backside and the rotation so that if they
- 2:45Speaker 3: shrink on the backside, it's the euroskip or it's you know,
- 2:48Speaker 3: or if it's a back dribble into a pocket pass,
- 2:51Speaker 3: which now makes a tyres.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Read the play maker.
- 2:55Speaker 3: But the floor is spread because you know, he's just
- 2:58Speaker 3: got a high, high basket ball IQ. He's in the
- 3:02Speaker 3: perfect system and the perfect program for him, because he's
- 3:06Speaker 3: a basketball junkie that Brace's coaching, wants to be coached hard,
- 3:11Speaker 3: listens and hears uh. And you know, he's being complimented,
- 3:16Speaker 3: complimented and tutored by guys like you know, let's face it,
- 3:21Speaker 3: Alex Caraban, who's as good as tutor as anyone, because
- 3:25Speaker 3: that only shows you what to do by his habits
- 3:28Speaker 3: and his actions, but in terms of by how he
- 3:31Speaker 3: carries himself. And I think that's really really been impressive,
- 3:35Speaker 3: how that they've all just kind of fit together. And
- 3:38Speaker 3: Braylin's he's just he's really been fun to watch.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'll tell you what, He's a dynamic kid.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Silence Demrie came from Georgia. Dan had a couple of
- 3:47Speaker 1: transfers from Malachi Smith from Dayton. Everyone's doing it, gotta
- 3:50Speaker 1: do it, got to keep your team, you know, full
- 3:53Speaker 1: of the talent on your roster. But Silas has had
- 3:56Speaker 1: some games this year set And I've said it on
- 3:59Speaker 1: the ear a few times because I was with the
- 4:02Speaker 1: Nets back in the early two thousands when Jason Kidd
- 4:04Speaker 1: got there, and I would say, I said it on
- 4:07Speaker 1: the air, like this guy is having a Jason Kidd game.
- 4:10Speaker 1: He might not score tonight, but he'll get nine assists
- 4:13Speaker 1: and he'll get six rebounds and you kind of.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Win by twenty.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I'm just amazed at the ability to do that stuff.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I just love those kind of players. What do you
- 4:22Speaker 1: make of Silas memory so far?
- 4:27Speaker 3: To me, Silas, it's his great I said last year,
- 4:31Speaker 3: I couldn't guard to baaltipoint attack.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Play simple. Well, they can guard to baltipoint attack.
- 4:35Speaker 3: And it drives me crazy when he commits a foul
- 4:37Speaker 3: thirty feet from the basket, forty fifth in the basket
- 4:39Speaker 3: he's got he can't pick up those fouls. He's got
- 4:41Speaker 3: a sit in a stance, all right, keep the ball
- 4:43Speaker 3: in front, play without his hands, and be a little smarter.
- 4:46Speaker 3: He can defend a basketball and keep it at a lane.
- 4:49Speaker 3: He rebounds his position. He's a willing passer. He sees
- 4:55Speaker 3: place early. And you know, in those times i've been
- 4:58Speaker 3: around him, like ear in the summer, he was really passive,
- 5:02Speaker 3: like he was driving it to get fouled, or he
- 5:05Speaker 3: was driving it just to pass. Now he's found a balance.
- 5:07Speaker 3: He's driving it to score and passing. Like you can
- 5:10Speaker 3: leave your feet to shoot and pass. You can't leave
- 5:13Speaker 3: your feet to pass and shoot. So like he's driving
- 5:15Speaker 3: it to score and now he's sucking that boom and
- 5:18Speaker 3: he's making a play, and he's making it on time,
- 5:20Speaker 3: on target. He's reading ball screens. But I asked him,
- 5:23Speaker 3: I said early on, I said, you play with some force.
- 5:25Speaker 3: You need to be more aggressive man, and he said, coach,
- 5:29Speaker 3: he said, first I fit in, and then I do
- 5:32Speaker 3: what I do.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Like he was very aware of first thing.
- 5:37Speaker 3: First he wanted to kind of get a feel for
- 5:40Speaker 3: exactly what this thing was all about.
- 5:41Speaker 4: And I got to be honest.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And people that haven't seen the practice, you go into
- 5:47Speaker 3: that thing for the first time and you think you're
- 5:49Speaker 3: going into summer workouts. Yeah, it's not summer workouts. It
- 5:54Speaker 3: is an absolute chaos of a practice with incredible intensity
- 6:01Speaker 3: and accountability. I remember Tyres Reid the year before, like
- 6:06Speaker 3: and joking with Commodity, and Tyres has no idea what.
- 6:09Speaker 4: He's about to experience.
- 6:11Speaker 3: But yeah, he's coming from where it was Funsi's in
- 6:15Speaker 3: the summer. I said, Oh, poor old Tyrus that first
- 6:18Speaker 3: time they walk in the gym and here we go,
- 6:20Speaker 3: here we go, and you know that, poor guy, it's
- 6:23Speaker 3: gonna be just absolutely it's gonna.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Culture shock, mind shock. You know.
- 6:28Speaker 3: It's like a little kid that you know, had a
- 6:30Speaker 3: popsicle for the first time and it's brain freeze. I
- 6:33Speaker 3: mean so, I mean like it takes time. Uh, and
- 6:39Speaker 3: and Silas has handled it seamlessly. He's an incredible teammate.
- 6:45Speaker 3: And I was at Grantwich when they had that that
- 6:47Speaker 3: uh that that uh golf evet for the collective, and
- 6:52Speaker 3: I could watch him interacting with people, and I thought
- 6:55Speaker 3: he was really impressive doing that. Uh.
- 6:58Speaker 4: He's just a he's a winning player.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:00Speaker 3: And I know, you know, people want to make comparisons
- 7:04Speaker 3: and all that. I just think he's a guy that
- 7:06Speaker 3: he came here to win. He came to Yukon to improve,
- 7:11Speaker 3: to be part of something bigger than him, and to win.
- 7:14Speaker 3: And you could see that in his approach. You can
- 7:17Speaker 3: see that how he allows himself to be coached, you
- 7:19Speaker 3: can see that how he interacts with his teammates, you
- 7:21Speaker 3: can see that with the passion that he plays with.
- 7:24Speaker 3: And Malachi is the perfect compliment to him. You know, Malachi,
- 7:28Speaker 3: they can play together.
- 7:29Speaker 4: But you know.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Malachi's you know, here's a guy that was the starter
- 7:33Speaker 3: and was recruited saying, hey, you're gonna play. You can
- 7:36Speaker 3: play significant minutes, you can help us win games, but
- 7:39Speaker 3: you're gonna have a very different role and the greatest
- 7:42Speaker 3: side of a team. And Mike, you've seen this. Like,
- 7:45Speaker 3: I'm big on watching benches. I'm really big on one,
- 7:48Speaker 3: especially the world that we live in today. College basketball.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I'm really big on one because you know me, you
- 7:53Speaker 3: would play for play and everyone.
- 7:56Speaker 4: How much is that got make? And how many You're always.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Good as your locker room, you call the games, you're
- 8:02Speaker 3: staring right at it, you're around it on the road
- 8:05Speaker 3: at home. Have you ever seen a better bench in
- 8:08Speaker 3: terms of those guys celebrating each other.
- 8:12Speaker 4: I have not seen very many benches like that.
- 8:16Speaker 3: And to me, and it goes all the way down
- 8:18Speaker 3: to the graduate assistance and the managers. We've all seen
- 8:22Speaker 3: the managers act going to do no shooting drills. But
- 8:24Speaker 3: it permeates. And that's the thing that people don't understand.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Like people watch on TV or they go to a
- 8:30Speaker 3: game and they see Dan's intensity. The buy into the special,
- 8:37Speaker 3: how special, what we're doing, how we're doing it, why
- 8:40Speaker 3: we're doing it? To me is the thing, and it's
- 8:43Speaker 3: a buy in from everyone and as they got it
- 8:45Speaker 3: to it for thirty five years. That's the magic of
- 8:48Speaker 3: Dan Hurley because it's not easy. It's not easy assistance,
- 8:54Speaker 3: it's not easy for anyone around. But you feel the
- 8:59Speaker 3: energy and you feel the passion and you want to
- 9:01Speaker 3: be part of it. You want to you want to
- 9:04Speaker 3: give your very best because you don't want to let
- 9:08Speaker 3: the person sitting next to you, or the guy that
- 9:11Speaker 3: you know, uh you know is playing behind you or
- 9:14Speaker 3: you're playing beside, or the fan that comes to the game.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I mean there's an incredible ownership that he creates and
- 9:21Speaker 3: uh you know, it starts with Dan.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, we feel it. Believe me, we feel it.
- 9:25Speaker 1: In the broadcast on the road Trips, the practices, uh
- 9:30Speaker 1: our thanks to Seth Greenberg, Dan Hurley as well. That's
- 9:33Speaker 1: the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show Sunday, two o'clock Marquette
- 9:37Speaker 1: at Gampa Pavilion
- 9:38Speaker 2: On Mike Chrispino, thanks for joining us,
