- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon men's basketball coaches showed Dan
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hurley with US Husky's with a couple of games coming
- 0:05Speaker 1: up you Mass Lowell People's Bank Arena that's on Friday
- 0:10Speaker 1: and then Columbia on Monday at Gamble Pavilion.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Dan, let's get into some.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Of the newcomers that folks maybe saw off for the
- 0:17Speaker 1: very first time at Gamble Pavilion the other day. Starting
- 0:21Speaker 1: in the backcourt, Silas Demery Junior. He played a little
- 0:24Speaker 1: over twenty minutes. Malachi Smith played twenty two minutes. Two guys,
- 0:27Speaker 1: who you're gonna I'm going to assume you're going to
- 0:30Speaker 1: be depending on on that perimeter to defend for you.
- 0:34Speaker 1: How do you assess where they're at in terms of
- 0:37Speaker 1: developing here as Yukon basketball players.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, I think that the potential
- 0:44Speaker 2: is there. I think, you know, I think the vision
- 0:47Speaker 2: is there for what they could become, you know, and
- 0:50Speaker 2: and I believe we can get them there. But you know,
- 0:54Speaker 2: just from a defensive standpoint, you're not anywhere near where
- 0:58Speaker 2: we need him to be. Uh And and I thought
- 1:02Speaker 2: Silas did it, did a really good job of like
- 1:05Speaker 2: getting to the rim. I think he's got good size,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and he's got good change of pace. Uh you know,
- 1:11Speaker 2: I think that the offensive end is an area that's
- 1:14Speaker 2: it's gonna take time.
- 1:16Speaker 3: It should take more time.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I'd say that I'm more you know, I'm much more
- 1:20Speaker 2: interested in in in those guys being able to help
- 1:23Speaker 2: us fix our defense.
- 1:25Speaker 3: That's in large part of what was you.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Know, most appealing with with with with Silas in particular
- 1:31Speaker 2: was his defensive abilities. And and he was he was driven.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Uh you know, he was driven by their guards a lot,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and uh be and and uh, yes, that's an area
- 1:40Speaker 2: of concern.
- 1:41Speaker 3: But I think that.
- 1:44Speaker 2: You know, he's got I think we can I think
- 1:46Speaker 2: that we can get him there. Uh you know, we're
- 1:49Speaker 2: obviously we're coaching them hard and trying to get him
- 1:52Speaker 2: where where where they need to be at.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Two other guys who transferred in Dwayne Coroma and Alec Millander.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I had three steals in the game they played play
- 2:03Speaker 1: about twenty minutes. Alec Milnder in maybe six minutes. But
- 2:05Speaker 1: the experienced guys that you do have on your bench,
- 2:10Speaker 1: as this thing you know opens up and floor, you know,
- 2:13Speaker 1: it becomes a season, can you expect that that veteran
- 2:17Speaker 1: experience can help.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it will, and I think it has
- 2:21Speaker 2: to because I can't watch you know, more than one
- 2:25Speaker 2: or two possessions of players just you know, getting getting
- 2:29Speaker 2: driven and scored on. So just having the ability if
- 2:32Speaker 2: if we've got guards that can't guard the ball, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: I've got to get him off the court. I get
- 2:37Speaker 2: him off the court quickly. So having a guy like Alec,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I think I probably should have played the more the
- 2:42Speaker 2: other night to either to send a message or to
- 2:45Speaker 2: just get a better defensive player on the court. So yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I mean, I think just having potentially three point guards
- 2:53Speaker 2: that are all veterans that can play is helpful, you know.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But then also if there are guards, there are other
- 2:58Speaker 2: players off the ball that are you know, that haven't
- 3:01Speaker 2: made the strides defensively that we need him to make.
- 3:04Speaker 2: We've got to be able to put better defensive players
- 3:07Speaker 2: on the court. And uh And I think that's that's
- 3:12Speaker 2: that's that's critical, especially early in the year, because I
- 3:15Speaker 2: think we have enough talent to be a really good
- 3:17Speaker 2: offensive team.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Even Dwayne.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Dwayne had a chance to have a great night, he
- 3:21Speaker 2: had a couple of steals, but in the back court
- 3:24Speaker 2: he should have passed it to a teammate, got it
- 3:26Speaker 2: back and finished. You know, instead he tried to drive
- 3:29Speaker 2: guards and he ended up smoking layups. So you know,
- 3:33Speaker 2: but Dwayne, I think is going to be a very
- 3:35Speaker 2: useful player for us. I think, you know, with Tarris back, uh,
- 3:39Speaker 2: you know, and and and and Eric, potentially having three
- 3:41Speaker 2: different type of centers is very useful.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Eric Robert was my next question, played eighteen minutes.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Got some good time here in those two exhibition games
- 3:50Speaker 1: about terras Reid available? Where where is he at? Where
- 3:54Speaker 1: can he get to? I mean, to me, he's got
- 3:56Speaker 1: a lot of talent. He looks like he's you can
- 3:59Speaker 1: finish with both hands. I only the only thing I
- 4:02Speaker 1: saw him and maybe you can you can you know,
- 4:04Speaker 1: comment on this. When he got it down down low
- 4:08Speaker 1: and deep, sometimes he instead of trying to just crush
- 4:12Speaker 1: it over the rim, you try to finesse it off
- 4:14Speaker 1: the board or something like that. Is that something that
- 4:17Speaker 1: he's capable of doing? He's seven to one, he's get
- 4:19Speaker 1: a strong dude.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Well, I mean he was three for three from the
- 4:23Speaker 2: field and and and you know, you know Alex missed
- 4:27Speaker 2: him on a layup. You know he was uh, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 2: we were, you know, we were in a kind of
- 4:31Speaker 2: a money play to get him a bucket because you
- 4:33Speaker 2: know that the center in their team was hitting very
- 4:36Speaker 2: very hard shots on him. So yeah, not the type
- 4:40Speaker 2: of shots that he's used to guarding. So I think
- 4:42Speaker 2: the game is still really fast for him, and you know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: he's he's playing, he's got to play a little faster.
- 4:49Speaker 3: He's got to react a little quicker.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Especially defensively, and and and on the glass, he's got
- 4:54Speaker 2: to react and he's he's got to try to protect
- 4:56Speaker 2: a rim a little bit quicker. But you know, Alex
- 5:00Speaker 2: took two points off the board for him. He should
- 5:02Speaker 2: have had eight. He was wide open. Alex threw through
- 5:04Speaker 2: a laser pass to him that ended up, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 2: going to Jalen Stewart, who ended up shooting a three.
- 5:10Speaker 2: So instead of Eric getting a dunk and get into
- 5:12Speaker 2: eight points, you know, he has an opportunity to catch
- 5:15Speaker 2: if you just recognize there's a chance to dive on
- 5:18Speaker 2: a broken play, he would have had another two point
- 5:21Speaker 2: dunk which would have got him to ten. And then
- 5:23Speaker 2: Alex Caraban threw him a great pass on a two
- 5:26Speaker 2: on one situation where all he had to do is
- 5:28Speaker 2: catch and go up and just finish it. And he
- 5:30Speaker 2: tried to like wedge dribble into a recovering player, lost
- 5:33Speaker 2: the ball, slapped it out of bounds, so he had
- 5:35Speaker 2: a chance to end up with twelve, you know, twelve,
- 5:38Speaker 2: And you know, we got to get him.
- 5:40Speaker 3: On the offensive glass.
- 5:41Speaker 2: He's not offensive rebounding, and he's not protecting the rim.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I think he'll be fine offensively. He's just I think
- 5:48Speaker 2: this time is valuable for him, just with Taris out.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I think it's been good for him to get all
- 5:52Speaker 2: of these reps because there's not a lot of freshman
- 5:56Speaker 2: centers starting right now college basketball at our level.
- 5:59Speaker 1: No, sure, Terris Reid, where's he at? Can he play
- 6:03Speaker 1: this week? Can he play on Friday? Can he play
- 6:05Speaker 1: on Monday? I'm putting you on the spot here now.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean listen, you know, we're We've got a
- 6:12Speaker 2: medical staff, I've got a strength coach. I've got all
- 6:15Speaker 2: these all these people that are smarter than me. They
- 6:18Speaker 2: were in school way longer than I was. That uh,
- 6:21Speaker 2: you know, just making sure that he doesn't come back
- 6:24Speaker 2: and and and and and aggravate it. Uh, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 2: he's uh, you know, he's a critical player for what
- 6:30Speaker 2: we're trying to do. So you know, he practiced. Uh
- 6:33Speaker 2: you know, he practiced four straight days leading up to
- 6:37Speaker 2: you know, leading up to New Haven, and uh, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 2: he did not play. That was the decision, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 2: I know Taris wants to play, wanted to play. The
- 6:46Speaker 2: medical people are doing their job and making sure that
- 6:48Speaker 2: he's ready to go. So uh yeah, I I don't
- 6:52Speaker 2: want to predict Friday. I guess we're still in game
- 6:54Speaker 2: time decision mode. But yeah, he practiced again today.
- 6:58Speaker 1: All right, one final thing where we go to right,
- 7:00Speaker 1: gonna talk to Mike Nardi with your new assistant coach,
- 7:03Speaker 1: Jersey guy Saint Patrick, Saint Anthony's. That was a heck
- 7:08Speaker 1: of a rivalry over the years. Yea, it was part
- 7:12Speaker 1: of a few of those for MSG and calling those games.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I mean, is that some of the best high school
- 7:17Speaker 1: basketball you might see around the whole country.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm going to be I don't want
- 7:22Speaker 2: to be that older person that enjoyed basketball in the seventies, eighties, nineties,
- 7:29Speaker 2: early two thousands right.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Through for me.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You know Kareem, you know Kareem through Kobe, you know
- 7:37Speaker 2: that just loved that era of basketball, and you know,
- 7:40Speaker 2: the passion, the intensity fact that these guys you know,
- 7:44Speaker 2: felt they owed it to show up every day and
- 7:47Speaker 2: practice hard and play hard, and there's load load management.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Those games, I mean games were wars, they were battles.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I mean the intensity, that tension.
- 8:01Speaker 2: The crowds, you know, it was you know it was
- 8:05Speaker 2: that was just incredible basketball. I mean they would outdraw
- 8:10Speaker 2: the biggest college programs in the state. When they played
- 8:13Speaker 2: at Rutgers. You'd get nine thousand people for St. Anthony
- 8:17Speaker 2: Saint Pat's Parochial B state championship game or a tournament,
- 8:21Speaker 2: a champions final at the Continental Airlines Arena, the old Meadowlands,
- 8:26Speaker 2: you'd get eleven twelve thousand people to watch the tournament Champian.
- 8:30Speaker 2: It's just basketball back then, was it was different?
- 8:34Speaker 3: It was.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I don't want to be the old old you know,
- 8:39Speaker 2: like this new generation they accuse you of being a
- 8:42Speaker 2: hater if you loved basketball.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Back then, it was different, Dan, I mean, the aau
- 8:50Speaker 1: thing became a thing after you were involved on the
- 8:53Speaker 1: high school level, didn't it. That's why those high school
- 8:56Speaker 1: rivalries to me, were so tremendous because you weren't getting
- 9:00Speaker 1: guys going all over the place to school. They went
- 9:02Speaker 1: to the Catholic schools.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Well, make sure this goes viral.
- 9:05Speaker 2: For me, the biggest misnomer is that the players play
- 9:07Speaker 2: too many games now. The problem is they play too
- 9:11Speaker 2: many games that are meaningless. Now, you know, they play
- 9:14Speaker 2: all these AAU games that mean nothing. You know, you
- 9:17Speaker 2: lose at eleven, you play it two. You know, like
- 9:20Speaker 2: you used to players played just as many games as
- 9:24Speaker 2: these players play now. But we played them. You played
- 9:28Speaker 2: them outside, you played them in parks. You played them
- 9:30Speaker 2: at PS thirty school in Jersey City, or you played
- 9:33Speaker 2: them in Brooklyn, or you played them in these cities
- 9:35Speaker 2: in parks. And if you didn't win the game, you
- 9:38Speaker 2: didn't you went to the side for an hour or two.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And then in order to keep the court, you had
- 9:43Speaker 2: to keep winning. So every game felt like this intense battle.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Now these kids they just play games. If they lose
- 9:53Speaker 2: the game, they could play another game in an air
- 9:55Speaker 2: conditioned gym in Memphis or Kansas City or Texas. I mean,
- 10:00Speaker 2: the kids should go back to playing in the park. Man,
- 10:03Speaker 2: should go back to playing on the black top. Should
- 10:05Speaker 2: have to like should I have to like go to park,
- 10:08Speaker 2: go go play you know, be a fifteen year old,
- 10:10Speaker 2: go play against a twenty five year old, really learn
- 10:12Speaker 2: how to play basketball, and learn how to learn how
- 10:14Speaker 2: to compete, you know, learn how to compete.
- 10:17Speaker 3: And I think that.
- 10:19Speaker 2: They've you know, like these guys, they play a lot
- 10:22Speaker 2: of meaningless games in college. They play a lot of
- 10:24Speaker 2: meaningless games in AAU. They don't play these huge games
- 10:28Speaker 2: anymore that mean everything, these big showdown games where it's
- 10:31Speaker 2: time to strap up, and so they don't really understand
- 10:35Speaker 2: how to play with pressure, play with intensity, play with
- 10:39Speaker 2: play with passion.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I'm with you, I completely agree. Those were great. When
- 10:45Speaker 1: Saint Pat's sat Anti's. I will talk to Mike about
- 10:48Speaker 1: that a little bit. I think we'll get his viewpoint. Coach,
- 10:50Speaker 1: we appreciate it. Good luck this week and next week
- 10:53Speaker 1: and going forward, and we'll talk to you again soon.
- 10:56Speaker 3: All right, guys, appreciate you.
- 10:57Speaker 1: All right, that's Dan Hurley back with more of the
- 10:59Speaker 1: Yukon men's basketball Coaches Show in a moment on lear
- 11:02Speaker 1: Field
