- 0:00Speaker 1: Football and four powered by the Inside of the Birds podcast.
- 0:02Speaker 1: It is brought to you by the Fanatics sports book
- 0:04Speaker 1: at Ocean Considers or in Atlantic City, And of course
- 0:07Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan's here on a Tuesday for today's edition of
- 0:11Speaker 1: Football at four on the Sports Bats Live ninety seven
- 0:15Speaker 1: three ESPN. A lot of conversation about the Eagles issues offensively.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We had Kevin Batoula on earlier and the press conference
- 0:23Speaker 1: he was asked that very question about the lack of
- 0:28Speaker 1: offense in the second half. What went wrong in the
- 0:31Speaker 1: second half against Tampa from your perspective was the opening
- 0:34Speaker 1: question today and obviously a lot of people trying to
- 0:38Speaker 1: figure that out. Adam Kaplan, what went wrong with the
- 0:40Speaker 1: offense in the first half against the Rams and then
- 0:43Speaker 1: in the second half against the Buccaneers. Do we have trends?
- 0:46Speaker 1: What are we seeing with the issues of the Eagles offense?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Mi kid, it's definitely weird. It's definitely strange. No,
- 0:55Speaker 2: it's not like twenty twenty three. People were kind of
- 0:58Speaker 2: funny because I like what happened is Mike and sometimes
- 1:02Speaker 2: the media is part of it, like they just feel
- 1:04Speaker 2: like they have to say something when something is different. Oh,
- 1:07Speaker 2: well this is I got twenty twenty three vibes. Well,
- 1:09Speaker 2: first of all, Vic Fangrews a defense coordinator. Okay, Well,
- 1:12Speaker 2: we just talk about the differences, and the passing game
- 1:16Speaker 2: was different. Hurts is very aggressive because he was coming
- 1:18Speaker 2: off the twenty two season where he was not only
- 1:21Speaker 2: one of the top two quarterbacks in the NFL, it's
- 1:24Speaker 2: really good. I mean, he unfortunately got hurt, he had
- 1:26Speaker 2: the knee injury, but you know, he could have been
- 1:29Speaker 2: the MVP. So things changed for him. You know in
- 1:32Speaker 2: twenty three turn the ball over. Now he's not as
- 1:35Speaker 2: aggressive as a thrower most of the time, but Mike
- 1:39Speaker 2: in the first half, and this is part of our
- 1:41Speaker 2: discussion today, is that he was so on time with
- 1:44Speaker 2: a football. This has been an issue for him throughout
- 1:48Speaker 2: his career. Is like he knows what the play is,
- 1:51Speaker 2: he doesn't like what he sees, he goes to another
- 1:53Speaker 2: he goes to another pass target, another progression, and he's late.
- 1:56Speaker 2: That does happen sometimes not the only quarterback to do it,
- 2:00Speaker 2: for Holmes does it. We've talked about this before when
- 2:02Speaker 2: Andy Reid doesn't like when Mahomes Hoults. It's the football
- 2:06Speaker 2: he coach for shorter drops a three step drop and
- 2:09Speaker 2: he makes sure that Moms gets rid of the football.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So I love how it hurts in the first half
- 2:15Speaker 2: was getting rid of the football on time. And by
- 2:17Speaker 2: the way, on another thing that I really liked about Patulo,
- 2:20Speaker 2: I you know, I could have sized him heavily for
- 2:22Speaker 2: being to run de Pennant on first down against Kansas City, Mike,
- 2:26Speaker 2: on non short yardage plays living the push play, they
- 2:31Speaker 2: ran the ball over eighty percent of the time on
- 2:33Speaker 2: first down, Like that's so predictable and not what you
- 2:35Speaker 2: should be doing. Well, this is the first half that
- 2:37Speaker 2: they came out throwing the ball a lot on first down.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I loved it. It worked. Second half, Mike, as we
- 2:45Speaker 2: transitioned to the second half of the game last week,
- 2:47Speaker 2: started to run the ball more on first down. You
- 2:49Speaker 2: saw they got stuffed immediately. The bucks dropped off. They
- 2:53Speaker 2: were they were basically dropped. They were playing basically playing
- 2:57Speaker 2: covered face defense, which with some stimulated pressure, but they
- 3:02Speaker 2: stopped listening his heart to beat him with the blitz,
- 3:03Speaker 2: which is beautiful. He got him with a blitz and
- 3:07Speaker 2: it looks so good. And then they kind of dial
- 3:09Speaker 2: things back a little bit. And then when they threw it.
- 3:12Speaker 2: It was more deep sideline. Hearts was off a little bit.
- 3:16Speaker 2: A couple of them were a little bit late. Now,
- 3:18Speaker 2: I know some fans are conflating. Oh it was after
- 3:21Speaker 2: he got hit hard. He wasn't the same quarterback. We've
- 3:23Speaker 2: seen that a lot on our on our YouTube message
- 3:27Speaker 2: or comments. And look, he was not diagnosed with a
- 3:29Speaker 2: concussion in the game. We'll see what the injury report
- 3:33Speaker 2: looks like tomorrow. But he suddenly didn't look the same.
- 3:35Speaker 2: It's hard to go oh for eight, not go for
- 3:37Speaker 2: any yards of the second half. But certainly things have
- 3:40Speaker 2: to move this along. My things have to be better.
- 3:42Speaker 2: My opening state wouldn't be both the coordinator and the quarterback,
- 3:46Speaker 2: not just coordinator, not just the quarterback. They've got to
- 3:48Speaker 2: get more in sync. The OC's got to help him
- 3:50Speaker 2: a little bit more.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, So, like you know, to tail of two halves
- 3:53Speaker 1: in both of these games, and we seeing you know,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I guess the one game was the first half. This
- 3:59Speaker 1: game was the second half. But they got a lead,
- 4:01Speaker 1: they got an eighteen point lead, and how much does
- 4:04Speaker 1: that play into their first half passing verse their second
- 4:08Speaker 1: half passing? In other words, we're not gonna take chances
- 4:10Speaker 1: because you've got to score three times against our defense.
- 4:13Speaker 1: We don't see that happening.
- 4:15Speaker 2: So all right, let me let me kind of respond
- 4:17Speaker 2: to what I've been told on when you should start
- 4:20Speaker 2: running the ball transition to a run game. Not in
- 4:23Speaker 2: the third quarter unless you're up by twenty four points
- 4:25Speaker 2: or more, which means four scorers three three, three touchdowns
- 4:28Speaker 2: and a field goal. Fourth quarter more than seventeen points,
- 4:32Speaker 2: two touchdowns at a field goal and whatever else. That
- 4:36Speaker 2: means you need to have four possessions that you're giving
- 4:38Speaker 2: up points. So I now, again, I thought they got
- 4:43Speaker 2: a little conservative transition a little bit more to the
- 4:45Speaker 2: run game, trying to be more balanced, maybe really certainly
- 4:48Speaker 2: to the run game. And that's gonna and we'll get
- 4:50Speaker 2: into the run game, which I look, anyone with a
- 4:53Speaker 2: brain would have said, there's zero chance, said Barkley would
- 4:55Speaker 2: have come close to two thousand ers. Again, but I
- 4:58Speaker 2: didn't see this. I'll raise my hand, Mike, I didn't
- 5:00Speaker 2: see this. This is hard to believe how bad the
- 5:03Speaker 2: running game is. And then we're gonna go into the reasons
- 5:05Speaker 2: bike But that's it's not a petula problem. It's a
- 5:08Speaker 2: player problem, particularly in the interior. We'll get into that.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Stalin's not a problem, but he's got to do the
- 5:15Speaker 2: best he can. But Mike, I don't know that these
- 5:17Speaker 2: run game problems are gonna be fixed anytime soon.
- 5:20Speaker 1: All Right, talk with that in capital here on the
- 5:22Speaker 1: Sports Bash. Yes, the running game struggles. Is that happening
- 5:27Speaker 1: because of design or is it personnel on the offensive line?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Personnel on the offensive line that's not playing like we
- 5:35Speaker 2: were accustomed to. Kim Jurgens clearly not himself, Mike. You know,
- 5:40Speaker 2: on the inside the tape show, Greco sells. We've asked
- 5:43Speaker 2: Greg multiple times, Hey, what are you seeing? And he's
- 5:46Speaker 2: putting in multiple times to Jurgons and Dickerson not playing
- 5:49Speaker 2: like we're used to. It's not bad, but they're just
- 5:52Speaker 2: not It's not quite what we're used to seeing.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Now.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Batulo said it, a couple of my lot of said it.
- 5:59Speaker 2: There just there have been a play here or there
- 6:02Speaker 2: where there. It's just they're just missing it a little
- 6:05Speaker 2: bit where last year they're timing when it be in
- 6:07Speaker 2: better with the offensive line would have been more instinct.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I think that's that's legitimate. But Mike, it's still when
- 6:13Speaker 2: Barclay's running for well, less than four yards to carry
- 6:16Speaker 2: through four games, not one to two. That's a problem.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I know they face some good defenses, but that wasn't
- 6:21Speaker 2: a problem last year.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And just so.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Folks know, because it's totally fall against stack boxes, I've
- 6:27Speaker 2: never talked to a coordinator in twenty seven years said,
- 6:30Speaker 2: oh my god, we can't run against an eight man box.
- 6:32Speaker 2: It's the way that you adjust your offensive line and
- 6:36Speaker 2: how you're personnel grouping. So it's totally false. You can
- 6:41Speaker 2: run against stack boxes. It's not easy, but you can
- 6:43Speaker 2: do it. Just for the record, every coach I've talked
- 6:45Speaker 2: to over the years is told me the same thing.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Oh we can do it. It's how we do it
- 6:49Speaker 2: formationally to beat that stack box.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Well, obviously they won the game. There are four and
- 6:54Speaker 1: oh there has to be some positives from that game
- 6:57Speaker 1: that gainst the Tampa Bay bucceteers. What would some of
- 7:00Speaker 1: those things be in your estimation?
- 7:03Speaker 2: But look, they're unbelievable in the red zone. It's funny.
- 7:07Speaker 2: They don't get a lot of chances down there, but
- 7:09Speaker 2: they're phenomenal in there. So you got to point about
- 7:11Speaker 2: you got to point that out there. Great in the
- 7:13Speaker 2: red zone hurts was like, see, it's really interesting. His
- 7:16Speaker 2: first half of this game against the Bucks. It wasn't
- 7:20Speaker 2: like twenty twenty two because that was more of a
- 7:22Speaker 2: downfield passing offense, whereas it was protected really well and
- 7:26Speaker 2: Hurts is like, this ball's coming out. I looked through
- 7:28Speaker 2: the deep ball where he looked like it was kind
- 7:31Speaker 2: of like that Steelers game, which I pointed to many times,
- 7:34Speaker 2: when the ball will come out quickly, and he was
- 7:36Speaker 2: in rhythm. He was going through more than one progression.
- 7:39Speaker 1: It was.
- 7:39Speaker 2: It was phenomenal. I was like, wow, this is not
- 7:42Speaker 2: we haven't seen this for them getting the ball quickly.
- 7:44Speaker 2: We already talked about what happened in the second half,
- 7:47Speaker 2: but it also Platoula brought out so many different things,
- 7:50Speaker 2: the variety of the shure yards plays, push plays, how
- 7:54Speaker 2: he did it, the shovel pass that got her, which
- 7:57Speaker 2: by the way, is in every NFL playbook. It's just
- 7:59Speaker 2: when you bring it out. I love that on the
- 8:02Speaker 2: push play, they just decided to handle it off like
- 8:05Speaker 2: we've been waiting for that and they've done it. So
- 8:07Speaker 2: I'm Petila is great. Look Mike one thing, and I
- 8:10Speaker 2: don't know Petula personally, and I'm not not protecting the guy,
- 8:13Speaker 2: but I just want fans to understand a push on
- 8:16Speaker 2: the fan base wheen of Michael Clay fired multiple times. Okay,
- 8:21Speaker 2: now I know Michael's struggle a little bit. Nick jerry On,
- 8:25Speaker 2: to his credit, gave him time to the young guy
- 8:28Speaker 2: by one of the youngest coordinators in the NFL of
- 8:30Speaker 2: any position, and he gave him his time to progress
- 8:33Speaker 2: and learn as as a coordinator. Fan to one, I'm
- 8:37Speaker 2: not I'm not joking. I tell this on our on
- 8:39Speaker 2: our YouTube boards. They wanted, they wanted Kevin Petulla fired
- 8:43Speaker 2: after two weeks, fired, fired after two weeks. I know
- 8:48Speaker 2: these fans are spoiled, they use to great football, but
- 8:51Speaker 2: this is just insane. I didn't look at I've had
- 8:54Speaker 2: my critics criticis of the tool. I've been I've sometimes
- 8:57Speaker 2: of it. Man, I'm really going in going after this
- 9:00Speaker 2: guy when I think it's bad or not good enough.
- 9:02Speaker 2: But I also realized, for covering this business for a
- 9:04Speaker 2: long time, you can't just fire a guy every week.
- 9:07Speaker 2: This is this is unfortunate. This goes on with every
- 9:10Speaker 2: fan base.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Mike, It's no doubt, no doubt, and I agree. I
- 9:14Speaker 1: think you know he's got to grow into this, but
- 9:16Speaker 1: not only this position, his personnel. He got to ask
- 9:18Speaker 1: an interesting question today that was about, like, how do
- 9:21Speaker 1: you run an offense when you have so many star
- 9:23Speaker 1: players on your offense. He's like, well, it's a good
- 9:25Speaker 1: problem to have too many stars, but it's also something
- 9:28Speaker 1: that's tough to kind of, you know, step right into
- 9:31Speaker 1: when it's your first chance of how I get the
- 9:33Speaker 1: ball distributed to all these different guys and you talk about,
- 9:37Speaker 1: you know, the diversification in the first half. You know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: they pull out a couple of new things, yet the
- 9:42Speaker 1: numbers weren't all that great when you look at aj Brown,
- 9:46Speaker 1: DeVante Smith. Obviously Saquon Barkley's getting off to a slow start.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So he's gonna have to grow into this role. And
- 9:54Speaker 1: he's doing it on the fly and he's winning on
- 9:55Speaker 1: the fly. But we'll see where this goes because obviously
- 9:58Speaker 1: you have the Aj Brown stuff of looming and lingering
- 10:01Speaker 1: now over his head. How much he had nine targets
- 10:04Speaker 1: this We had ten last week. He had ten last week.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Get over one hundred yards this week he had nine.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Healy had what the seven yards?
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but you gotta give him the ball early. Mike
- 10:12Speaker 2: that's that's that's one of my you know, I have
- 10:15Speaker 2: five or six criticisms of the too low which I
- 10:17Speaker 2: were very with legit because it's come from some NFL
- 10:20Speaker 2: people that watch Eagles say you got that guy, and
- 10:23Speaker 2: I know Kevin talked about it today about we know
- 10:27Speaker 2: going our number one guy is going to be a J. Brown.
- 10:30Speaker 2: But okay, even if Hurts is late, there are ways
- 10:33Speaker 2: to get him the football early. On shorter routes, they
- 10:37Speaker 2: fill a lot to the sidelines. Hurts loves that throw
- 10:40Speaker 2: and by the way, you could fill it look hurt
- 10:43Speaker 2: despite the narrative, which is mostly true, Hurts wasn't like
- 10:46Speaker 2: throwing it inside the numbers. They hit got her inside
- 10:49Speaker 2: the numbers. They had a J. Brown. It on a
- 10:51Speaker 2: quick slant. We're in the quick slants. He cannot be
- 10:54Speaker 2: covered on that because of his physicality, because it was
- 10:57Speaker 2: because how big he is physically in terms of of
- 11:00Speaker 2: is built. Yeah, we need to catch on Patullo. That
- 11:03Speaker 2: is not on Hurt.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Well, but that's the play where that's a play where
- 11:07Speaker 1: I think they were talking about that during this last night,
- 11:09Speaker 1: during the Monday night game. Is if you have a
- 11:10Speaker 1: running play that keeps working, you run it again and again,
- 11:14Speaker 1: that inside slant. You should keep running until they find
- 11:17Speaker 1: the way you stop it.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Mike, we talked about this in year one with a
- 11:21Speaker 2: Bang aid that that's the play that we first brought
- 11:24Speaker 2: it up in twenty two with a J. Brown like,
- 11:28Speaker 2: this is before anyone ever heard of it. So I
- 11:31Speaker 2: asked Greg Cosel. I said, Hey, I heard from the Titans.
- 11:34Speaker 2: This is what is what do you call this play?
- 11:37Speaker 2: This quick slant that they it's called the Bang eight,
- 11:40Speaker 2: that's a staple of the Titans. I'm like, well, this
- 11:43Speaker 2: is coming. And it was to a certain extent and
- 11:45Speaker 2: then kind of disappeared. I know again, I know Hurt's
- 11:49Speaker 2: presidence just to throw it outside of numbers, but it's
- 11:52Speaker 2: it's a quick read. You know what the play is, Hurt.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I'm telling you Brown cannot be covered on that plate.
- 11:56Speaker 1: That I agreed impossible, agree wholeheartedly with that, Adam Apple.
- 12:00Speaker 1: In a couple of quickies before you get out of here,
- 12:04Speaker 1: you've got today. Vic Dangel was talking about Macouba. Looks
- 12:08Speaker 1: like he's the starter there. He said, Mitchell played the
- 12:10Speaker 1: best game that he thought he ever played. He also
- 12:12Speaker 1: said he thought Ringo it's possible that he could be
- 12:16Speaker 1: the full time starter. He thought that he played really well.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yeah, this is interesting that he probably got targeted. So
- 12:22Speaker 2: two people told me that what was surprised, not surprising,
- 12:26Speaker 2: but Vick Actually he didn't describe it. I know what
- 12:29Speaker 2: he meant because it was explaining to me privately. Dicky
- 12:32Speaker 2: encourage means you're on your man. He's like he went
- 12:35Speaker 2: for the most part, he didn't get beat. I know
- 12:37Speaker 2: the ball didn't go to him, but it could have.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And that's the point we tried to explain to people.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I know his tackling wasn't good. We weren't talking about
- 12:45Speaker 2: that on our post game show. That had no relevance
- 12:47Speaker 2: to what we were talking about. That's another part of
- 12:50Speaker 2: the corners have to tackle the wrung game. That's that's
- 12:52Speaker 2: got its own importance. The number one criteria evaluating a
- 12:56Speaker 2: corner as how he covers. Okay, no one who works
- 12:58Speaker 2: in the NFL will tell you differently. Now, you got
- 13:00Speaker 2: to be able to tackle Ringo's tackling. He took poor angles.
- 13:06Speaker 2: That's got to be better that That will always be
- 13:08Speaker 2: pointed out by your your defensive backs coaches. But the
- 13:11Speaker 2: number one criteria is covered you'll see on the inside
- 13:14Speaker 2: the tape show with the defensive one, which I think
- 13:17Speaker 2: drops tomorrow, we talk about this Mike with Ringo. We
- 13:23Speaker 2: actually showed the play where he did a good job.
- 13:25Speaker 2: He was aggressive. Now, one thing that I have an
- 13:28Speaker 2: issue with is, depending on who's writing it, is how
- 13:32Speaker 2: many times they held a couple, got called a bunch,
- 13:35Speaker 2: did not get called the defensive backs Ringo Mitchell. Mitchell
- 13:40Speaker 2: had a great game, but you gotta be careful.
- 13:42Speaker 1: That Mitchell's awful grabby he is.
- 13:46Speaker 2: But you know what, there's a saying in the NFL,
- 13:48Speaker 2: if it wasn't called it, it wasn't called it wasn't bell.
- 13:51Speaker 2: The coaches say that it's actually funny. I've got that
- 13:54Speaker 2: some coaches over the years, but they know they can't
- 13:56Speaker 2: do that. While was so egregious, I could imagine be
- 14:00Speaker 2: a Buck fan, I would I would have thrown a
- 14:01Speaker 2: shoe at the TV. But you know what, they didn't
- 14:03Speaker 2: call it. Eagles have studs man terms of Mitchell and
- 14:07Speaker 2: and uh.
- 14:09Speaker 1: You know they tackle man, they tackle.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yes, but Macouba, I know he does get give up
- 14:15Speaker 2: a play every now and then. Gotta you gotta go
- 14:18Speaker 2: through the grown pains of a rookie. He's a really
- 14:20Speaker 2: good football player. How he I'll tell you what he
- 14:23Speaker 2: is really getting these he's getting right in the right
- 14:25Speaker 2: in the draft. Uh, he really is. He's how he is.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Howie Roseman has turned out around his career. He's not
- 14:31Speaker 2: the best drafter, lest need that, the RAMS is one
- 14:34Speaker 2: of the best. But how he's top five now in
- 14:36Speaker 2: terms of games started by draftees, production and tape. I'm
- 14:40Speaker 2: telling you he's really good at it, all right.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Well, of course, Uh, the Eagles play the Broncos, who
- 14:45Speaker 1: we saw last night. You can listen to that game
- 14:47Speaker 1: right here on ninety seven three ESPN. Adams back on
- 14:50Speaker 1: Friday to give us some more insight on the Denver Broncos,
- 14:53Speaker 1: a playoff team from a year ago that will be
- 14:55Speaker 1: the fourth straight playoff team the Eagles will face, and
- 14:59Speaker 1: of course that be right here at Lincoln Financial Field.
- 15:02Speaker 1: All right, Adam, thanks man, thank you,
