Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Bill Martelli Junior is with us. He's the head coach
- 0:23Speaker 1: at VCU. He said if he wasn't coaching, he'd like
- 0:26Speaker 1: to be a sports radio host in Philadelphia. So we
- 0:29Speaker 1: give him that opportunity every now and again. We have
- 0:32Speaker 1: done it once, we'll do it again here. There's a
- 0:34Speaker 1: lot going on with Philly sports, and Rob Brindamore is
- 0:37Speaker 1: going to join us, who is the head coach of
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Carolina Panthers they're taking out now. He's a Flyers,
- 0:43Speaker 1: legend flyer. Fans love Brindamore, but he is coaching against
- 0:47Speaker 1: Martelli's Flyers, and so we'll get to that in just
- 0:49Speaker 1: a second of coach.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Let's start here.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Nothing says March like the field of seventy six.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Huh.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I mean, we all knew it was coming right, like
- 0:59Speaker 3: we knew it was with any of this stuff. If
- 1:02Speaker 3: there's one thing we've learned is once they start talking
- 1:05Speaker 3: about it, it's going to happen, right, And it was
- 1:08Speaker 3: just a matter of where they going to go to
- 1:09Speaker 3: seventy two seventy six. But here's what I'll say, Like
- 1:15Speaker 3: people are like anything right, they get up in arms
- 1:18Speaker 3: right away, Oh my god.
- 1:19Speaker 2: What are we doing?
- 1:19Speaker 3: Blah blah blah. Well they did that when he went
- 1:21Speaker 3: from sixty four to sixty five how many years ago? Yes,
- 1:25Speaker 3: and then it went from sixty five to sixty eight
- 1:27Speaker 3: and everybody's like, and everybody's good with it now, you know. So, yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 3: it'll be weird next year. But the reality is like
- 1:34Speaker 3: in a couple of years, those guys that take off,
- 1:37Speaker 3: you know, they like to take off Thursday and Friday
- 1:40Speaker 3: and spend the whole day watching games. Now they're going
- 1:42Speaker 3: to take off Tuesday and Wednesday too, and they'll watch
- 1:44Speaker 3: games all day. I can support you know those days
- 1:45Speaker 3: coming up.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what, I shouldn't be criticizing this. That's
- 1:48Speaker 1: a great point by you. Thank you for pointing that out.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Go ahead, Mikey coach.
- 1:52Speaker 4: If your rank seventy seventh, you can't complain, right, like
- 1:55Speaker 4: that's just waiting.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's going through hat.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yes of course, yeah right, you would again go.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Back in time, you would have said that to like, well,
- 2:03Speaker 3: if you were sixty ninth, you're you don't have no
- 2:06Speaker 3: no gripe? Well what did we have all year? You're
- 2:10Speaker 3: talking about this team and that team. Should this team
- 2:12Speaker 3: be in? That team be in? I mean, I do
- 2:15Speaker 3: I do miss the days of the sixty four you know,
- 2:18Speaker 3: the one page you know deal. But yeah, I just
- 2:22Speaker 3: think we just adjust to it. We get used to it,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and we build it out and I don't know if
- 2:27Speaker 3: they can ever go beyond seventy six, you know, in reality.
- 2:31Speaker 3: But again we would have said that however many years ago,
- 2:34Speaker 3: you know, getting too sixty eight.
- 2:35Speaker 5: I think about this the same way I thought about
- 2:37Speaker 5: that golf tournament where they play pairs for some reason.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Who is this for?
- 2:42Speaker 5: Because I mean, was anybody clamoring for more? What's the
- 2:45Speaker 5: what is it fixing here?
- 2:48Speaker 3: Well, it's it's the big conferences.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:50Speaker 3: We're sitting Will going like, well, how do we squeeze
- 2:53Speaker 3: you know, how do we squeeze some of these lower
- 2:56Speaker 3: level teams out a little bit further into bracket? How
- 2:59Speaker 3: do we get some more of our teams in? Because
- 3:01Speaker 3: that is one of the things, like you know again,
- 3:04Speaker 3: I mean for somebody to sit there and say, we
- 3:06Speaker 3: weren't going to be in that tournament this year is insane, right,
- 3:09Speaker 3: So I guess we would have been the first team out,
- 3:11Speaker 3: like like, that's kind of crazy. So it does help us,
- 3:14Speaker 3: you know, in a year like this if we don't
- 3:16Speaker 3: win the tournament we're in. But yeah, like it's to
- 3:21Speaker 3: get that sixteen and fifteen you know, high major team
- 3:25Speaker 3: in I don't love that, but I do love that.
- 3:29Speaker 3: There's more and there's going to be more more opportunities.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Phil Please accept my apologies. You're always talking college basketball.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You're not here to talk college basketball. You're here to
- 3:37Speaker 1: talk about Philadelphia's sports. So let's get to Philadelphia sports.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Which sport in Philadelphia?
- 3:43Speaker 2: I'm wondering. Let me try it this way.
- 3:45Speaker 1: If I told Philly fans only one of their teams
- 3:48Speaker 1: could win a championship over the next fifty years, what
- 3:51Speaker 1: would the fans. Well, I'm just trying to establish what's
- 3:54Speaker 1: the biggest sport in Philadelphia. What would the fans choose?
- 3:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that's I would choose the Phillies. The fans would
- 4:01Speaker 3: choose the Eagles. There's no question about it.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Really, not the Flyers about it.
- 4:06Speaker 3: No, there's no question. It's the Eagle. Like the Eagles,
- 4:09Speaker 3: the Eagles, the Eagles. I mean, you know, they all
- 4:12Speaker 3: have their backing for sure, but it's one. If you
- 4:15Speaker 3: said there's only one team that's going to be able
- 4:17Speaker 3: to win it, yeah, it's the Eagles.
- 4:19Speaker 2: How far back are the seventy six ers. Well, they're
- 4:24Speaker 2: tied down with boxed people.
- 4:28Speaker 3: That's a good question. I kind of feel like the
- 4:30Speaker 3: rest of them. To me, it's the Eagles number one,
- 4:33Speaker 3: and then it's a two. It's a three way tie
- 4:36Speaker 3: after that, Phillies, Sixers, Uh, Flyers. I feel like there's
- 4:42Speaker 3: like everybody loves everybody loves the Eagles, and I feel
- 4:46Speaker 3: like a lot of people love the Sixers, and then
- 4:48Speaker 3: there's a group that like the Sixers. Right, there's a
- 4:50Speaker 3: lot of people that love the Phillies and the group
- 4:52Speaker 3: that likes the Phillies. Right, there's a lot of people
- 4:54Speaker 3: that love the Flyers, and then group that likes the Flyers.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Where I feel like everybody in the city loves the Eagles, right,
- 4:59Speaker 3: So I think they' next three. I'd put it pretty even.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting with Rob Thompson, who has
- 5:05Speaker 1: been a very good manager for the Phillies. They made
- 5:09Speaker 1: the postseason I think every season he was the manager,
- 5:12Speaker 1: but shortly got fired no longer the Phillies manager. Were
- 5:15Speaker 1: you surprised by that or I guess we shouldn't be
- 5:17Speaker 1: because it's Philadelphia, right, Yeah.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I wasn't surprised just because of the way that they
- 5:22Speaker 3: were trending. I didn't like it. I mean, it's not
- 5:26Speaker 3: his fault that no one's hitting the ball. It's not
- 5:28Speaker 3: his fault that no one's fielding the ball like they
- 5:30Speaker 3: couldn't get anybody out like it was. That's not his fault,
- 5:33Speaker 3: like I thought. You know, I thought he was a
- 5:36Speaker 3: great manager. Obviously, I'm going to stick up for the coach, right,
- 5:38Speaker 3: so you know, it certainly wasn't his fault. Now I
- 5:42Speaker 3: understand this day and age, that's what that's what you
- 5:45Speaker 3: sign up for, right, Like someone's got to be the scapegoat.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yes they're not.
- 5:48Speaker 3: They're not getting you know, they're not They're not firing
- 5:50Speaker 3: Bryce Harper today, right or should they?
- 5:52Speaker 1: Right?
- 5:54Speaker 3: You know? So somebody has to follow that sword, and
- 5:57Speaker 3: unfortunately it was our guy Topper.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Yeah, which is it a bit of a misery loves
- 6:01Speaker 4: company thing though with the Mets being this bad too.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Right, it does it has to, right?
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, It's just miserable that the Philly stink because
- 6:13Speaker 3: I love the Phillies, like I want to be invested
- 6:15Speaker 3: from game game one to one sixty two and beyond,
- 6:19Speaker 3: like I want to be invested in every pitch, and
- 6:21Speaker 3: it's been really, really hard these last couple of weeks
- 6:24Speaker 3: to be invested. But it does make you feel a
- 6:26Speaker 3: little bit better that you're, like, all right, the Mets
- 6:27Speaker 3: stink like that does make you.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Feel you're welcome coach.
- 6:31Speaker 4: As a coach, you guys are wired to think that
- 6:34Speaker 4: you guys always have a chance. Unfortunately, my Tario has
- 6:37Speaker 4: found that out the hard way. But how surprised are
- 6:40Speaker 4: you still that the Sixers who looked dead have found
- 6:43Speaker 4: a way to even up the series and force a
- 6:45Speaker 4: Game seven?
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah? I really I didn't think they had much of
- 6:51Speaker 3: a chance. Honestly, I really didn't, you know. But credit
- 6:56Speaker 3: to those guys, I mean, they have they got something.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I mean, Nick Nurse is a hell of a coach,
- 7:00Speaker 3: you know, and has made the adjustments that they need
- 7:03Speaker 3: to make, you know. And Maxie is a superstar, right,
- 7:09Speaker 3: Like obviously getting a beedback healthy is huge, but like,
- 7:12Speaker 3: you know, Maxi's a superstar edgecumb They got something there, right,
- 7:17Speaker 3: if those guys can continue and stay consistent. But yeah,
- 7:20Speaker 3: it's I've been telling my boy, my my sixteen year old,
- 7:23Speaker 3: my eight year old are like, I mean, the ten
- 7:25Speaker 3: thirty last night, that game ended, and they're hooting and
- 7:27Speaker 3: holler and running around, you know, screaming at the eight
- 7:30Speaker 3: year old to go to bed. And he's like, you know,
- 7:32Speaker 3: my he makes his first community tomorrow. My sixteen year
- 7:35Speaker 3: old is in the car this morning dropping him off
- 7:37Speaker 3: for school, and he's going like, all right, there's like
- 7:39Speaker 3: a six am flight. I could go on. I could
- 7:41Speaker 3: get up there, I go one your brother's community. You're
- 7:44Speaker 3: not going anywhere too. You have no money for a flight. Three,
- 7:47Speaker 3: you have no ticket and no money for a ticket
- 7:49Speaker 3: you're talking about. So he's a typical that's who you
- 7:52Speaker 3: should have on because he's the prototypical irrational Philadelphia fan.
- 7:56Speaker 3: I'm like, well, I'll just fly up there and go
- 7:58Speaker 3: to the game. You don't have a ticket.
- 8:00Speaker 1: He was buying you that ticket, young man. I gotta
- 8:02Speaker 1: tell you, I love this kid. I do.
- 8:04Speaker 3: He's built for this, built for this.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Absolutely, what are you talking about?
- 8:11Speaker 3: Debate for hours? He's on it.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Bring him on next time, you come on? Okay, come
- 8:16Speaker 1: on together.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Well, maybe I should have asked him this question because
- 8:19Speaker 5: he seems so invested in the Sixers. But I'm curious, Okay,
- 8:22Speaker 5: So part of the reason why you me, anybody didn't
- 8:25Speaker 5: really know if they had a chance because we didn't
- 8:27Speaker 5: know if you were going to get Embiid, And if
- 8:28Speaker 5: we got Embiid, what version of him where we going
- 8:30Speaker 5: to get? But where are we here? Let me just
- 8:33Speaker 5: ask this, what do you expect from Joel Embiid in
- 8:36Speaker 5: a game seven? Because most of the time I close
- 8:39Speaker 5: my eyes and picture Joel Embiid in a high pressure
- 8:41Speaker 5: playoff game.
- 8:42Speaker 2: He's mister trying too hard.
- 8:44Speaker 5: He is all over the place mentally, and they just
- 8:47Speaker 5: kind of collapse around him. I'm hoping it seems like,
- 8:49Speaker 5: based on what we've seen from this series that he
- 8:51Speaker 5: sort of advanced beyond that.
- 8:53Speaker 1: The crazy thing with MB coach is he also has
- 8:55Speaker 1: the ability to be the best player on a floor
- 8:57Speaker 1: that includes Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
- 8:59Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he is. He's an incredible talent, right.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I think we talked maybe might have talked about this
- 9:06Speaker 3: the last time, Like it's he's one of those guys.
- 9:08Speaker 3: It's just such a unicorn. I personally don't trust it.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I you know, the thing was trust the process. I
- 9:16Speaker 3: personally don't trust it because it is it's just a tough,
- 9:21Speaker 3: like yeah, if he's if he's great, then't forget it.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Like they they probably do win Game seven. But I
- 9:28Speaker 3: think there's probably a number of Philadelphia fans that are
- 9:30Speaker 3: nervous about that, right like that.
- 9:32Speaker 1: It seems like you're one of them, to be honest
- 9:35Speaker 1: faith in this guy.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm not like a crazy Sixers guy, Like
- 9:38Speaker 3: I'm really not, like I'm I'm I'm not. I will
- 9:41Speaker 3: profess to that that I'm not a uh you know,
- 9:45Speaker 3: but yeah, like I I they need him to be right.
- 9:49Speaker 3: If he's not, then forget it, right, like, yes, you
- 9:51Speaker 3: know it? Like Game seven. You need your superstars to
- 9:54Speaker 3: be superstars, Like if he's supposed to be the megastar,
- 9:58Speaker 3: like he's got to be the megastar. Like it's great
- 10:00Speaker 3: with Max, he's done with Edgecomb's done with these other
- 10:02Speaker 3: guys have done. But like you need your superstars to
- 10:05Speaker 3: show up in Game seven.
- 10:06Speaker 5: I think we can print those T shirts. By the way,
- 10:08Speaker 5: I personally don't trust it, and then.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Just next year game we want him to come back.
- 10:13Speaker 2: No, not for he doesn't have that as his name
- 10:15Speaker 2: on it. Just for other Philadelphia fans.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I heard a lot of trust the process over the years. Yeah,
- 10:21Speaker 3: and I worked for him for a year and he's
- 10:24Speaker 3: first year that he played. I worked for the Sixers,
- 10:26Speaker 3: and I wasn't sure. And then he came out to
- 10:28Speaker 3: training camp and he did some things to h to
- 10:31Speaker 3: jelil Okafhor and no one's no weel and I was like,
- 10:33Speaker 3: there's a reason you haven't heard from those guys in
- 10:35Speaker 3: a long time. Like that first day he walked out there,
- 10:37Speaker 3: I was like, holy, you know what. Yeah, but it's
- 10:41Speaker 3: just the health thing, Like if you can't stay healthy,
- 10:43Speaker 3: the best abilities availability, right, that's right, need to be available.
- 10:47Speaker 5: What do you see when you watch Maxi and Edgecomb
- 10:50Speaker 5: together because Edgecomb seems to be as a rookie probably
- 10:52Speaker 5: should in this situation, holding back on what he can do.
- 10:55Speaker 5: He is so crazy explosive and Maxi, you know, he
- 10:58Speaker 5: was already an MVP candidate and quarter of the season,
- 11:01Speaker 5: So like, if you project that back court through the
- 11:03Speaker 5: next several years, what are you looking at?
- 11:06Speaker 3: Well? I think, to me, it just depends on how
- 11:10Speaker 3: consistent they can make that, right, Like my thing is
- 11:12Speaker 3: always that like there's always these guys or these pairs
- 11:16Speaker 3: or these trios or whatever that everyone goes like nuts, right, Like, oh,
- 11:21Speaker 3: my god, they're the next fill in the black and
- 11:25Speaker 3: then it falls off the next year. Now Maxie has
- 11:27Speaker 3: proven it, Edgecombe, I think you need another year to
- 11:30Speaker 3: see it at that level. Then now you're like, you
- 11:32Speaker 3: know what, there's something coming along here. You know, was
- 11:35Speaker 3: that a one year you know, a one year rookie
- 11:37Speaker 3: year kind of high and then you know you have
- 11:40Speaker 3: that that that slump. But if he stays consistent, I
- 11:43Speaker 3: think Maxi's to me at this point, he's proven himself.
- 11:46Speaker 3: As you know, he's an All Star, he's an All
- 11:48Speaker 3: NBA guy, he's a future potential MVP candidate. If you
- 11:52Speaker 3: get that from Edgecomb in year two, now you're looking
- 11:54Speaker 3: at like, all right, you got something right, Like you're
- 11:56Speaker 3: building real future, you know. And those are the kinds
- 12:00Speaker 3: of guys that win it for you, I think, right
- 12:02Speaker 3: like you look at when the Celtics are really good,
- 12:04Speaker 3: it's because Tatum and Brown are really good. They get
- 12:07Speaker 3: stuff from those other guys, but it's Tatum and Brown, right,
- 12:09Speaker 3: it's those perimeter I don't even want to say ball dominant,
- 12:13Speaker 3: but just the guys that can make plays, right, they
- 12:15Speaker 3: can score, facilitate through all those things. And both of
- 12:18Speaker 3: those guys have it. The thing for them is I
- 12:21Speaker 3: think I do think just from an outside perspective, there's
- 12:24Speaker 3: too many times sometimes where they just fall into a
- 12:26Speaker 3: little too iso. Yeah, you know where it's like waiting
- 12:29Speaker 3: all right, like Maxi's going and now everybody's standing around watching,
- 12:32Speaker 3: and then Escom gets going and everybody's standing around watching.
- 12:35Speaker 3: And they used to run into that with embiid right
- 12:37Speaker 3: like it was like now everybody's just standing around watching.
- 12:40Speaker 3: It still needs a little more cohesion where everybody's just
- 12:44Speaker 3: kind of playing off each other.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Is he is loving this. He finally has someone who
- 12:47Speaker 1: wants to talk basketball with him. Fill in the Blank
- 12:50Speaker 1: is an excellent segment. Listen sports Radio. It is all
- 12:52Speaker 1: about benchmarks and creative segments. Fill in the blanks with
- 12:56Speaker 1: Phil Martelli is fantastic, So filling this. Who would the
- 13:00Speaker 1: Knicks rather face next round, Boston or Philly?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Fill in the blank?
- 13:04Speaker 3: I have to I have to figure Philly it's beating
- 13:07Speaker 3: them in the playoffs before I have to imagine they'd
- 13:09Speaker 3: rather play the Sixers.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yes, yes, tell her you want the Sixers.
- 13:12Speaker 4: I'm at the point, Coach, I don't care who we played.
- 13:15Speaker 4: If O's gonna play like this, Yes, bring on anybody,
- 13:20Speaker 4: and I like our chances.
- 13:21Speaker 3: That was shocking, and you just won a game by
- 13:24Speaker 3: ninety nine points. Yet there's a little bit of like, yeah,
- 13:26Speaker 3: we can play anybody. And then and then what happens
- 13:29Speaker 3: is you get punched in the mouth game one and
- 13:30Speaker 3: you're like, oh, damn, we should have played the other team.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Yeah, this is still the same team that was down
- 13:34Speaker 5: two to one Atlanta, and everybody's scratching their heads. Okay,
- 13:37Speaker 5: and I told you Taylor, be careful with og Nanobi. Man,
- 13:41Speaker 5: he can look dominant in a game like this, but
- 13:43Speaker 5: when the pressure's on it's a two point game and
- 13:45Speaker 5: you're looking for offense, you look for Og.
- 13:47Speaker 2: He's going to be standing in the corner.
- 13:48Speaker 4: And I think Stu, Yeah mckelbridges might have found his
- 13:51Speaker 4: confidence yesterday.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Well, I do wonder because coach is not a big
- 13:54Speaker 1: Philadelphia seventy six er fan by his own admission, And
- 13:57Speaker 1: if they do play the Knicks, all those guys are
- 13:59Speaker 1: from Philly.
- 14:01Speaker 3: So my McHale Bridges story. I was the first one
- 14:04Speaker 3: to offer him a scholarship. I was an assistant at
- 14:06Speaker 3: Delaware University of Delaware.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Wow, he was playing.
- 14:08Speaker 3: At great Valley High School. They haven't produced a player
- 14:11Speaker 3: in a million years. A friend of mine played against
- 14:14Speaker 3: them and was like, there's this kid. So we are
- 14:18Speaker 3: playing Villanova that year, and I'm going to see this
- 14:21Speaker 3: kid like the next week. And I see him walking
- 14:23Speaker 3: across the baseline with his friend. So I stopped and
- 14:26Speaker 3: I said, Michael, I'm coach. Martellius said, I'm coming to
- 14:28Speaker 3: see you next week. His eyes were like this big.
- 14:30Speaker 3: He couldn't even believe it. Right. So he's sitting behind
- 14:35Speaker 3: Villanova's bench. Usually your recruits are sitting behind your bench.
- 14:37Speaker 3: He was there because his friend had season tickets. They
- 14:40Speaker 3: had no idea who he was. He was a junior
- 14:43Speaker 3: in high school, no clue. I'm recruiting and recruiting and
- 14:46Speaker 3: recruiting him. All of a sudden, he starts to blow up.
- 14:48Speaker 3: People are going crazy about him. By the end of
- 14:50Speaker 3: that year, there's a bunch of schools around. They still
- 14:52Speaker 3: weren't really.
- 14:53Speaker 2: In on him.
- 14:53Speaker 3: To be completely honest, they would probably tell you otherwise.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They still weren't completely in on him. And Florida offered
- 14:59Speaker 3: him a scholarship. If I remember being on the phone
- 15:01Speaker 3: with him, and he's like, Florida just offered me a scholarship.
- 15:03Speaker 3: The next day, Villanova offered him because he was right
- 15:06Speaker 3: in their back pocket, you know, right at their backyard.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Yes, what a terrible choice by him.
- 15:11Speaker 3: And I remember him telling me when he committed to Villanova,
- 15:13Speaker 3: he's like, coach, just like I thought I was coming
- 15:16Speaker 3: to Delaware, Like I couldn't even believe that you were interested.
- 15:18Speaker 1: In right, and you're like I found you.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Yes, six months later at Villanova.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Weren't his arm still ridiculously long? I would have been.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I would have been recruiting him just looking at his arm.
- 15:26Speaker 1: But this is why McVeigh keeps it. You know, he
- 15:28Speaker 1: doesn't want anyone to know he's taking Ty Simpson because
- 15:30Speaker 1: once it gets out that mcveig likes him, everyone likes him.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And that's what Mortelly did. He showed everyone he likes
- 15:34Speaker 1: McHale Bridges.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I mean, a blind squirrel gets gets another every once
- 15:39Speaker 3: in a while, right.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Are the blind squirrels not many?
- 15:48Speaker 1: What do you make of what Lebron James is doing
- 15:51Speaker 1: at this age? Like you're watching basketball differently than the
- 15:53Speaker 1: rest of us. Maybe you and Izzy are watching it
- 15:55Speaker 1: the same way, But you have to marvel at a
- 15:57Speaker 1: guy who's that age playing at that level, right.
- 16:00Speaker 3: It's just and that's what everybody said, like, Wow, the
- 16:03Speaker 3: playoffs is different because of the rhythm of the playoffs
- 16:05Speaker 3: and you know, the physicality and the minutes and all that.
- 16:09Speaker 3: It's it's incredible, right, Like, and I've always been the
- 16:13Speaker 3: Jordan guy. But what I've been saying recently is this, like,
- 16:16Speaker 3: you know, we have that debate, and we'll have the
- 16:18Speaker 3: Lebron Jordan debate. But I go back to my childhood
- 16:22Speaker 3: in Philadelphia, and it was Wilt or Mike, right, Wilt
- 16:24Speaker 3: or MJ, all the all the old Philly guys, Will
- 16:26Speaker 3: Will Will, Will Will Yeah, And I said, I'm the
- 16:29Speaker 3: old Philly guy that's going MJ, MJ, MJ. But in
- 16:32Speaker 3: a few years from now, you're gonna look back and
- 16:33Speaker 3: go like, yeah, Lebron is the best player of all time.
- 16:36Speaker 5: I mean it's people are saying if he you know,
- 16:38Speaker 5: if he goes, if he loses after leading three, that
- 16:41Speaker 5: it's going to hurt his legacy. And all I'm going
- 16:44Speaker 5: to say is it just means he's played in so
- 16:47Speaker 5: many damn playoffs series that the result was gonna happen
- 16:50Speaker 5: at some point. It makes sense that it's Lebron, He's
- 16:53Speaker 5: played in fifty seven. I believe fifty six. This is
- 16:56Speaker 5: fifty sixth playoff series. Do you know how many playoff
- 16:59Speaker 5: series Michael Jordan plays? Are you arguing?
- 17:01Speaker 1: He said, Eventually we're going to say it's Lebron.
- 17:03Speaker 5: I know because I'm preparing for what you're about to say.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I'm never going to say it. I'm never going to
- 17:09Speaker 1: agree with Philmore on this you And.
- 17:11Speaker 5: That's why I'm raising my fifty six playoff series to
- 17:16Speaker 5: thirty seven for Michael Jordan. Since since Jordan last one, okay,
- 17:21Speaker 5: Jordan last one his playoff series, he was like thirty
- 17:23Speaker 5: five years and one hundred and seventeen days old. Since
- 17:25Speaker 5: Lebron turned that same age, he's participated in twenty more
- 17:30Speaker 5: playoff series.
- 17:31Speaker 2: It's insane.
- 17:32Speaker 3: It's insane. I saw him play in the Eastern Conference
- 17:36Speaker 3: Finals in May of two thousand and nine. We were
- 17:43Speaker 3: there because Jamiir was playing for Orlando and De Lante
- 17:47Speaker 3: was playing for the Cavs, and my dad was in
- 17:50Speaker 3: Cleveland for a meeting or something, and we all met
- 17:54Speaker 3: there and Megan, my wife, was there with me. She
- 17:56Speaker 3: was pregnant with Philip, our sixteen year old son, that was,
- 18:01Speaker 3: and he hits he had a game winner at a
- 18:03Speaker 3: buzzer beater at top of the key buzzer beater, And
- 18:05Speaker 3: I think back in that like, so my oldest son's
- 18:08Speaker 3: whole lifetime, Lebron's been playing in the NBA Finals, right, Like, yes,
- 18:14Speaker 3: he's close enough, like it. It's but at that age
- 18:17Speaker 3: to do that, like I'm forty four, almost forty five,
- 18:20Speaker 3: Like just to like touch my toes shower, it takes like,
- 18:26Speaker 3: all right, i gotta get myself ramped up, and I'm
- 18:27Speaker 3: not in terrible shape, but like this dude's after getting
- 18:30Speaker 3: getting thirty and triple doubles and doing this and doing.
- 18:33Speaker 5: That, And wait, was that that you said you were
- 18:35Speaker 5: at the Orlando game winner? Was the Orlando I think
- 18:40Speaker 5: it's the only game they win in that series.
- 18:42Speaker 2: But still what a game, right.
- 18:44Speaker 3: And game too And the best part about that about
- 18:47Speaker 3: that game had nothing to do with the game. Usher
- 18:50Speaker 3: was there because he was like a fake big time
- 18:52Speaker 3: Cleveland fan for that little period of times. Yeah, and
- 18:55Speaker 3: my wife was obsessed with Usher. Yeah, and he walked
- 18:57Speaker 3: by us in the tunnel and gave like a head
- 19:00Speaker 3: nod and said, like you know, what's up. Y'all. She
- 19:02Speaker 3: completely froze and I kill her to this day. She choked,
- 19:07Speaker 3: He completely froze. He just won't Hey, what's up? And
- 19:11Speaker 3: she was like, you're in the headline.
- 19:13Speaker 5: Usher's done that to a lot of women. But that's
- 19:15Speaker 5: that's quite a moment right there.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I was like, that was your chance, your chance to
- 19:18Speaker 3: leave me and go on with Usher, and you blew it.
- 19:21Speaker 4: The best part about Stu Gotts's defense of Michael Jordan
- 19:25Speaker 4: is that if Michael Jordan played today and had the
- 19:27Speaker 4: exact same career, if he didn't win his championship until
- 19:31Speaker 4: that seventh year, Stu Gotts would have been the loudest
- 19:34Speaker 4: person criticizing him.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but listen, he won six, He would have won
- 19:37Speaker 1: eight had he not taken the two years off.
- 19:39Speaker 2: That's it.
- 19:39Speaker 1: That's all I'm saying, coach, that's it.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I'm still team MJ. But it's at some point in
- 19:47Speaker 3: time we're gonna.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Have You're an enabler here, Phil, when you say that's
- 19:50Speaker 2: a fact, everyone knows.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I mean, the only reason Elaijuuan has two is because
- 19:54Speaker 1: Jordan took those two years off. That's it, right, Yeah, Yeah,
- 19:57Speaker 1: I mean he doesn't want to say.
- 19:59Speaker 2: That of Jordan. I gotta ask an Anthony Edwards. Really
- 20:02Speaker 2: it's a Minnesota Timberwolf.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And by the way, Rob Brenda Moore the fly the
- 20:05Speaker 1: Carolina Hurricanes, that coach could to join us. Take it on,
- 20:08Speaker 1: Phill's Flyers it in just a minute.
- 20:09Speaker 5: Here, go ahead, last thing here, because I cannot figure
- 20:11Speaker 5: out this team, Like did they have this really crazy
- 20:15Speaker 5: deep roster the whole second half of the season and
- 20:16Speaker 5: we just didn't know it?
- 20:18Speaker 2: Or is it? You know? Guys like is it?
- 20:19Speaker 5: Terrence Brown Junior and Iu Desumu and obviously McDaniel's like,
- 20:25Speaker 5: how does a team have all of this ability and
- 20:28Speaker 5: it only shows up when they really need I'm just
- 20:30Speaker 5: very confused by it.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Well, you forgot about our guy here, Bones.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Highland Bones of course.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Yeah, right, so Bones was here. He came to one
- 20:39Speaker 3: of our games late in the year and we were
- 20:40Speaker 3: talking about.
- 20:41Speaker 2: That Terrence Shannon Jenner.
- 20:42Speaker 3: He said like like he said, like they got some dudes.
- 20:45Speaker 3: He's like, no, we're pretty good now. Bones is also
- 20:47Speaker 3: a very confident guy, and but he said it. Then
- 20:51Speaker 3: he's like, we got a squad. He's like, we got
- 20:53Speaker 3: a squad? And uh yeah, I mean and again like
- 20:57Speaker 3: the playoffs just brings something out of guys, right, you
- 21:00Speaker 3: brought it up like there are certain guys that cower
- 21:02Speaker 3: from it, right, that get into that and they're like,
- 21:04Speaker 3: this is too much. The pressure is too much, the intensity,
- 21:07Speaker 3: the detailed scouting reports and all these things are too much.
- 21:11Speaker 3: And there's other guys that thrive. And it looks like,
- 21:13Speaker 3: you know, it looks like those guys in Minnesota thribbing.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Jade McDaniels is turning into a star out of nowhere.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Yea he is, Uh, coach, how is this gonna work
- 21:21Speaker 1: for you? With the hockey playoffs here the Flyers have advanced.
- 21:24Speaker 1: They take on Carolina, Carolina best team in hockey, other
- 21:27Speaker 1: coach by a Flyer legend and ro Brenda Moore. Uh,
- 21:30Speaker 1: he's gonna get booed. He's not going to be treated
- 21:32Speaker 1: well when he goes into that building. Right, even though
- 21:34Speaker 1: you guys love him.
- 21:35Speaker 3: He won't get booed the way like a real a
- 21:40Speaker 3: real enemy would get booed. Right, he's a he's a
- 21:42Speaker 3: what they call it, a frind of me? Yeah, yeah, right,
- 21:44Speaker 3: Like he's a he's a he's a frind of me. Like, Uh,
- 21:48Speaker 3: he's still very much beloved in Philadelphia, and he should be.
- 21:52Speaker 3: But yeah, it's for the next week and a half,
- 21:54Speaker 3: for however long the series is. You know they will
- 21:57Speaker 3: not be uh, but they're the one thing about Philadelphia
- 22:01Speaker 3: is they have that anger. They're gonna find somebody, so
- 22:05Speaker 3: it might not be towards him. Yes, they'll find a
- 22:07Speaker 3: guyn on the Hurricane. He says, like, you know what,
- 22:09Speaker 3: that's the guy we're going after. Like, you know, Sidney
- 22:12Speaker 3: Crawlsby's an easy target in Philadelphia. They went after him.
- 22:15Speaker 3: You know, there's a couple of those other guys. Now
- 22:17Speaker 3: they'll go after They'll find a guy on the Carolina
- 22:20Speaker 3: you know team, and go after him.
- 22:22Speaker 1: All Right, we're gonna take a quick time out here.
- 22:24Speaker 1: We'll come back with Rob Brenda Moore, the head coach
- 22:26Speaker 1: of the Carolina Panthers. But I want you to Carolina Hurricanes.
- 22:30Speaker 1: What I want Phil to do during the break here
- 22:32Speaker 1: is check his wallet, make sure his son hasn't stolen
- 22:34Speaker 1: a credit card and booked himself.
- 22:36Speaker 2: A flight to Boston. We'll be back after this.
- 22:50Speaker 1: He is the head coach of the best eam in hockey,
- 22:52Speaker 1: Rob Brendamore with US. He's a former flyer coach of
- 22:55Speaker 1: the Carolina Hurricanes. He's taking on Phil Martelli Junior's Philadelphia Flyers.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Phil is joining us on this on this interview. We're
- 23:02Speaker 1: excited about that.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Rod. How are you? Thanks for doing this, sir?
- 23:06Speaker 6: Oh good, Thanks for having me a little hostile territory here.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Yeah, what we got. I still love that.
- 23:14Speaker 1: How is it for you just being a Philadelphia Flyer
- 23:18Speaker 1: legend and now the head coach of the of the
- 23:20Speaker 1: Carolina Hurricanes, Any conflict there or no? Just like, like,
- 23:24Speaker 1: what are the feelings for you coaching against the team
- 23:27Speaker 1: you used to play for?
- 23:29Speaker 6: Well, no, there's no conflict. I mean, I've been to
- 23:32Speaker 6: this twenty five years, right, but I I I'm I'm
- 23:35Speaker 6: actually happy for the Fires and the fans, and they
- 23:38Speaker 6: deserve it, you know they they I think, you know,
- 23:40Speaker 6: Philadelphia first of all, I obviously the best sports town
- 23:42Speaker 6: in America. They you know, good or bad, they let
- 23:46Speaker 6: you know, and they support their teams. And when I
- 23:49Speaker 6: was a Flyer just I love playing there. You know,
- 23:52Speaker 6: if you're an honest player and you work, you know
- 23:54Speaker 6: your butt off, they're gonna you're all right, and uh
- 23:57Speaker 6: it's not. They're gonna let you know. It keeps you
- 23:59Speaker 6: on your tone as an athlete there, so good for
- 24:02Speaker 6: them that they made it in obviously, you know I'm
- 24:05Speaker 6: on the other side now, but I enjoyed my time
- 24:07Speaker 6: there for sure.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Brought some of us. Most of us are down here
- 24:10Speaker 2: in South Florida.
- 24:10Speaker 5: We've seen your guys' team play in the playoffs against
- 24:13Speaker 5: the Panthers a few times, and frankly, I can't stand
- 24:16Speaker 5: playing you guys. But wondering what sort of creates the identity.
- 24:20Speaker 5: What are some sort of non negotiables for a Hurricanes
- 24:23Speaker 5: style player.
- 24:26Speaker 6: I mean, it's a cliche ish, but you know, everybody's
- 24:29Speaker 6: got the word culture they fly lot around, but you know,
- 24:34Speaker 6: you got good culture, a bad culture. Everyone has it.
- 24:36Speaker 6: And I feel like we've really done a nice job
- 24:39Speaker 6: here of getting just honest players, you know, and come
- 24:43Speaker 6: in and earn their check every day. And you know,
- 24:47Speaker 6: and it starts with your leader. We got a great
- 24:48Speaker 6: one in Jordan Stall. I said it the other day.
- 24:51Speaker 6: I got asked about him, and you know, he's been here,
- 24:53Speaker 6: I don't know, fourteen years or something, and I've been
- 24:56Speaker 6: here every year with him. I've never seen the guy
- 24:58Speaker 6: take a day off. And then I mean on the
- 25:00Speaker 6: ice practice game, like the you know move and so
- 25:04Speaker 6: when you have something like that to kind of be
- 25:06Speaker 6: the leader, it makes you know, everyone else got to
- 25:09Speaker 6: kind of fall suit. So we we've kind of hung
- 25:11Speaker 6: our head on that just do your best, and you know,
- 25:15Speaker 6: obviously we got strategy and we got the same stuff
- 25:17Speaker 6: everybody else has, but like compete level is kind of
- 25:20Speaker 6: the non negotiable for us, and I think it's served
- 25:23Speaker 6: us well.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Coach.
- 25:24Speaker 4: I went to school in Chapel Hill, and I love
- 25:26Speaker 4: the dynamic there because you and see Duke and NC
- 25:30Speaker 4: State fans in the triangle are fighting every day. They
- 25:32Speaker 4: can't agree on anything. And then you have the Carolina
- 25:35Speaker 4: Hurricanes where it kind of brings everybody together and you
- 25:38Speaker 4: kind of have that interesting dynamic, no doubt.
- 25:42Speaker 6: That's been really one of the things that when I
- 25:45Speaker 6: first got here, I you know, obviously knew all about
- 25:47Speaker 6: what you just said. I didn't realize you had to
- 25:49Speaker 6: pick a team, you know, like I couldn't support all three.
- 25:53Speaker 6: It was like, no, no, that's not how it works.
- 25:54Speaker 6: So married into the NC State family, so and they've
- 25:58Speaker 6: all been great to me. So I kind of put
- 26:00Speaker 6: that hat on and then kind of live that life
- 26:04Speaker 6: with you know, like you said, you got to pick one,
- 26:06Speaker 6: but one more playing. It's nice to see that we're
- 26:08Speaker 6: kind of the one pro team here and everyone can
- 26:11Speaker 6: kind of jump on board and get together and they
- 26:13Speaker 6: certainly support us, that's for sure.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Rod. This is Uh, this is Phil. We actually played
- 26:20Speaker 3: down at your spot. We played NC State early this year,
- 26:23Speaker 3: so we were in that arena. That's a great place
- 26:26Speaker 3: I can imagine for your games. It's got to be crazy.
- 26:28Speaker 3: But coach, the coach, I'm asking you, you know, you
- 26:31Speaker 3: just played four games in a week and then you
- 26:33Speaker 3: have a week off, Like how are you managing that
- 26:35Speaker 3: with your group? You know, to keep them, keep them ready,
- 26:38Speaker 3: keep them sharp, but also kind of give them that
- 26:40Speaker 3: time to you know, reset their minds in their bodies.
- 26:43Speaker 6: That it's uh tricky, especially we didn't really know when
- 26:48Speaker 6: we were even going to play. There was like, okay,
- 26:50Speaker 6: Saturday of the earliest, could be Monday, you know, so
- 26:52Speaker 6: you're kind of all right, you know, trying to gauge
- 26:55Speaker 6: the rest, and you definitely physically need to rest them,
- 26:59Speaker 6: but it's a mental grind for our sport that really
- 27:02Speaker 6: takes its toll, I find, and so you want to
- 27:05Speaker 6: get them away from the rink as much as possible,
- 27:07Speaker 6: and so we gave him a few days in this
- 27:11Speaker 6: whole stretch to just stay away from the rink and
- 27:14Speaker 6: go do something else. There's lots to do here in
- 27:16Speaker 6: this time of the year with the weather and because
- 27:19Speaker 6: you got to refresh, and when once we start up
- 27:21Speaker 6: here again tomorrow night, it's just go, go go. So
- 27:24Speaker 6: I don't know, we'll see. You know, we didn't have
- 27:27Speaker 6: a ton of practices. We had three pretty good ones,
- 27:30Speaker 6: which doesn't sound like a lot in that timeframe, but
- 27:35Speaker 6: we we aired on kind of give them the more
- 27:37Speaker 6: of a rest and hopefully that translate into being able to,
- 27:41Speaker 6: you know, get that little edge physically wise.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Coach wondering how you sort of break this down right,
- 27:48Speaker 5: the step to take from contender which you've been for
- 27:52Speaker 5: several years to champion. Is there something one sort of
- 27:56Speaker 5: note or one sort of theme that you guys talk
- 27:58Speaker 5: about most of the time or is it just like
- 28:00Speaker 5: every year it's always something different, but we know we
- 28:02Speaker 5: have it.
- 28:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it's you certainly learned from the past.
- 28:07Speaker 6: I can tell you that. I mean we've we've we've
- 28:09Speaker 6: had a group here that the core group that stayed
- 28:11Speaker 6: here has been here for eight years now, and you know,
- 28:14Speaker 6: we've been through some tough losses, but you know, we've
- 28:18Speaker 6: I think we've learned from all. We had a series
- 28:20Speaker 6: the other the last series where things didn't go our
- 28:22Speaker 6: way in the last game, everything was kind of working
- 28:24Speaker 6: against us, and I just felt like guys have been
- 28:27Speaker 6: there before, like we've seen this and handle it really well.
- 28:31Speaker 6: So you're hoping that that experience plays off as you
- 28:34Speaker 6: move along. And you know, I know the hunger is
- 28:36Speaker 6: there these guys, they know they only get so many
- 28:39Speaker 6: shots at this So our goal certainly stays the same
- 28:42Speaker 6: every year. I don't know that you know, one year
- 28:45Speaker 6: bleeds into the next two months, it's starting fresh. But
- 28:47Speaker 6: the experiences that you've had in the past, certainly you
- 28:50Speaker 6: rely on those moving forward here at this time of
- 28:52Speaker 6: the year.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Rod, when when you're obviously so locked into your series
- 28:58Speaker 3: and upcoming series, do you pay attention much to the
- 29:01Speaker 3: other series going on in the playoffs? Are you're just
- 29:04Speaker 3: so locked into previous series?
- 29:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, you know, I watched mostly it's all
- 29:11Speaker 6: hockey with us because the playoffs there's so many games.
- 29:14Speaker 6: You know, I got I have a little basketball connection.
- 29:16Speaker 6: I got some good friends in the NBA. Sydney Low
- 29:18Speaker 6: who used to coach MPTY State. I became good friends
- 29:22Speaker 6: with him, and mostly because my father I was coached
- 29:25Speaker 6: and played at NC State, so that's why I'm connected there.
- 29:28Speaker 6: And I know he's with the Pistons, So I kind
- 29:30Speaker 6: of keep my eye on everything going on. But yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 6: you're listen, that's my job, right, I got to know
- 29:36Speaker 6: what's going on, and you're looking to a f other series.
- 29:40Speaker 6: It's trends. You know what what's going on, if there's
- 29:43Speaker 6: something you can pick up, and obviously down the road,
- 29:46Speaker 6: if you end up having to play teams, you're you're
- 29:48Speaker 6: kind of getting an idea what what what's working for them?
- 29:50Speaker 6: So yeah, it's it's a fun time of the year.
- 29:53Speaker 6: It's a busy time though, all.
- 29:54Speaker 5: Right, I would be honest, Okay, you're going into your
- 29:57Speaker 5: watching the game. It's Mammoth and it's Golden Knights. It's
- 30:00Speaker 5: into two overtime. It's a two way. Tell me when
- 30:03Speaker 5: when these games go into overtime in the playoffs, you're
- 30:05Speaker 5: just like folding it out and just like, hey, I'll
- 30:07Speaker 5: just read about it in the morning.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Right, There's no way you stay up and see how
- 30:09Speaker 2: long those games go?
- 30:11Speaker 6: Listen, listen, I said, there's a couple of games on
- 30:14Speaker 6: watching them right, I'm there's a zero chance that I'm
- 30:18Speaker 6: watching that over time. It's eleven o'clock.
- 30:23Speaker 2: It lights out of my house, smart Rod.
- 30:26Speaker 1: We have been making a joke down here. You're from Ottawa.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I'm wondering, do you think Canada hates South Florida because
- 30:31Speaker 1: we stole hockey from them?
- 30:32Speaker 2: I mean, what do you think?
- 30:36Speaker 6: I don't know about that Florida credit. I was born
- 30:39Speaker 6: in Ottawa. I'm you know, I didn't spend any time there.
- 30:43Speaker 6: But yeah, there's listen, the US is taken over here
- 30:46Speaker 6: on almost everything. So when it comes to the hockey
- 30:49Speaker 6: and their sport, which Canada that's what they hang the
- 30:52Speaker 6: hat on. It's kind of taking a turn here the
- 30:55Speaker 6: last few years. So yeah, it's not just down to
- 30:58Speaker 6: South Florida, it's kind of in US in general.
- 31:02Speaker 1: When you look at this Flyers team, what do you
- 31:04Speaker 1: see in terms of their strengths? What are their what
- 31:06Speaker 1: are their strengths and what do you have to do
- 31:08Speaker 1: in order to beat this Flyer team?
- 31:11Speaker 3: Oh?
- 31:11Speaker 6: Well, they were the I think that the second best
- 31:13Speaker 6: record after the Ulslar breaker or the Olympic break and
- 31:17Speaker 6: they just got dialed in. And in our sport, it's
- 31:19Speaker 6: details are so important. And if you can if you
- 31:22Speaker 6: can get on the right page with twenty guys and
- 31:25Speaker 6: really play your system really well, you get a chance
- 31:28Speaker 6: every night. And then if your goalie is good, that
- 31:30Speaker 6: kind of gives you that other edge. And I think
- 31:32Speaker 6: all that's kind of falling into place for them. Obviously
- 31:35Speaker 6: they have good everybody has good players, but okay, we're
- 31:38Speaker 6: all doing it right, we're on the same page. And
- 31:40Speaker 6: then your goalies kind of, you know, playing really well.
- 31:44Speaker 6: That just gives a team a whole bunch of confidence.
- 31:46Speaker 6: And that's what I see in that team. No Denver
- 31:49Speaker 6: than our team, no Diverton teams that are playing right now.
- 31:52Speaker 6: It's kind of the key factor is the goaltending's got
- 31:54Speaker 6: to be sharp and then being on the same page.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I want to play a game with you. Hockey player
- 32:00Speaker 1: or not a hockey player?
- 32:02Speaker 2: Okay? Uh?
- 32:03Speaker 1: And really just one question, uh Taylor, our executive producer,
- 32:07Speaker 1: open bar at a wedding.
- 32:09Speaker 2: He walked up to the bar.
- 32:10Speaker 1: The drinks are free, he ordered a Shirley Temple hockey
- 32:14Speaker 1: player or not a hockey player?
- 32:16Speaker 6: I mean, oh, that's obvious, very obvious. I don't know.
- 32:24Speaker 6: I don't have to answer that. Yeah, layup. You just
- 32:27Speaker 6: gave me a layup.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Go ahead, coach, if you have something for him.
- 32:33Speaker 3: I gotta ask you. You know, now's the Philadelphia and
- 32:35Speaker 3: I gotta ask you. What was your favorite when you
- 32:37Speaker 3: played in Philly? Besides you know, going to the to
- 32:41Speaker 3: the rink and playing in front of the fans, what
- 32:43Speaker 3: was your favorite thing to do off ice in Philadelphia?
- 32:47Speaker 6: Oh? Great question. No I didn't. I didn't engage in that,
- 32:53Speaker 6: but I did a lot of I actually took a UH.
- 32:58Speaker 6: I went to Temple for a summer. Like I loved
- 33:00Speaker 6: all the the UH classes. I loved the college sports.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Whenever they would put back lad was there. They would
- 33:09Speaker 6: played a lot of college games at the Spectrum. I
- 33:11Speaker 6: don't remember they had it. What the tournament they had there.
- 33:14Speaker 6: I forget what it's called.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Now played in that tournament.
- 33:18Speaker 6: Yeah, there you go. I probably was at one of
- 33:21Speaker 6: your games. You know, I I go and you know
- 33:23Speaker 6: we can get in obviously, So I loved watching that.
- 33:27Speaker 6: UH spend my summers there watch all the baseball went
- 33:29Speaker 6: to the Philly games, So that you know anything I
- 33:31Speaker 6: could do. I was young back then when I was there,
- 33:34Speaker 6: single guy, so you can imagine run around. But I, uh,
- 33:38Speaker 6: I certainly enjoyed all the sport and the events that
- 33:41Speaker 6: you know you can do there. You got a miss spectrum, right, Yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 6: well that was just a great building. It's such an
- 33:49Speaker 6: advantage for a home team. And you know, you didn't
- 33:52Speaker 6: really notice that I played. I started my career in
- 33:54Speaker 6: Saint Louis, so I played a couple of years in
- 33:56Speaker 6: you know, Philadelphia as a visitor, and then when I
- 33:59Speaker 6: got to the uh the Homer there, it was you
- 34:02Speaker 6: realize how much an advantage it was. So really uh
- 34:05Speaker 6: mit that building. But obviously they got a good one
- 34:08Speaker 6: now too.
- 34:09Speaker 5: Right, I get a lot of a hard time from
- 34:10Speaker 5: Stu from being a gym junkie, says, I live in
- 34:13Speaker 5: the gym. You obviously have a reputation for staying fit
- 34:16Speaker 5: even after you're playing. Where do you find the time, coach,
- 34:20Speaker 5: which is what asked me all the time?
- 34:23Speaker 6: Yeah, you gotta make it for me. It's you know,
- 34:26Speaker 6: I've just always kept that lifestyle and get. The first
- 34:30Speaker 6: thing I do in the morning when I get up
- 34:31Speaker 6: is we come in getting get the workout and It
- 34:34Speaker 6: gets my mind right through the day. That's really why
- 34:37Speaker 6: I'd like to do it and not you know, it's
- 34:39Speaker 6: to feel good. You're in shape as best you can,
- 34:42Speaker 6: but it you know, I go through all my day
- 34:44Speaker 6: the stuff I gotta cover off while i'm you know,
- 34:47Speaker 6: working out. I think it just gets me, gets me
- 34:50Speaker 6: going and hopefully you know, I got I gotta pretend
- 34:54Speaker 6: at least to hang in with these guys as long
- 34:56Speaker 6: as I can, so we do some testing if I
- 34:59Speaker 6: can kind of have do with some of the tests
- 35:01Speaker 6: that they go on. And there's no reason these guys
- 35:04Speaker 6: can't do it. So I know that day's coming to
- 35:06Speaker 6: an end soon. But no, that's that's still still in
- 35:10Speaker 6: the in the process.
- 35:11Speaker 2: You could probably do this for another thirty years.
- 35:13Speaker 6: Right now it's winding down.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I'm telling you, what of those workouts look like. I mean,
- 35:20Speaker 1: if you don't.
- 35:20Speaker 6: Mind, yeah, I'm I'm an executive workout guy now. I mean,
- 35:27Speaker 6: I get a good sweat and then we you know,
- 35:29Speaker 6: you get into the gym and get a little lift in.
- 35:33Speaker 6: But it's nothing like it used to be.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Coach, am I putting you in a bad spot if
- 35:38Speaker 1: I ask you, and we'll see if Rob if Rod agrees,
- 35:40Speaker 1: if I ask you for your Mount Rushmore of Philadelphia Flyers.
- 35:46Speaker 2: That's I love it? Which coach? Okay? No, well, Coach Martelly,
- 35:49Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Yes, what do I get for? You're both
- 35:53Speaker 2: gonna do it? Okay?
- 35:54Speaker 1: So Rod and Phil Martelly, you are both going to
- 35:56Speaker 1: do this together. A former flyer legend who is now
- 35:59Speaker 1: the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes and the coach
- 36:02Speaker 1: at VCU is a big time Philly fan. All right,
- 36:05Speaker 1: so we're gonna do this together. So Rod, uh, you
- 36:07Speaker 1: go first. You have four names. You can go one
- 36:09Speaker 1: name and then coach and Phil goes one name. Let's
- 36:12Speaker 1: go one to each, Okay, all right, all right, you
- 36:14Speaker 1: go one.
- 36:15Speaker 6: My my ultimate one and it is Bill Barber is
- 36:19Speaker 6: my first one and the reason number one. He's a
- 36:22Speaker 6: Hall of Famer, but he he mentored me when I
- 36:25Speaker 6: got to Philadelphia. He took me under his wing. He
- 36:27Speaker 6: was already retired, but we've become great friends. I named
- 36:31Speaker 6: my son after his son because this is the ultimate
- 36:34Speaker 6: flyer for me, Bill Barber. So there's number one.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Okay, So let's do it like this. Coach, Phil would
- 36:40Speaker 1: would would Barber be on your Mount Rushmore?
- 36:43Speaker 3: I think he would be on. If he's not on
- 36:45Speaker 3: one hundred percent of Flowers fans Mount Rochmore, he's on
- 36:47Speaker 3: ninety nine percent.
- 36:48Speaker 1: All right, So why don't you give your second name
- 36:50Speaker 1: here and let's see if let's see if Rodd.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Agrees I would have.
- 36:54Speaker 3: You gotta go Bobby Clark. Okay, all right, he's the iconics, right,
- 36:59Speaker 3: all right.
- 37:00Speaker 6: It goes without saying Connor Clarky. I think set the
- 37:03Speaker 6: standard for that. You know, the faith of the franchise
- 37:06Speaker 6: really probably probably still is after all these years. So
- 37:09Speaker 6: you gotta go Clerky.
- 37:10Speaker 2: All right, h Phil, you want to go again?
- 37:12Speaker 1: Let's you see if Rod agrees with your Matt Rushmore.
- 37:14Speaker 2: This is great.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I can't believe. Look at this, dreams come true? Phil,
- 37:17Speaker 1: you do what I'm Mount Rushmore flyers with Rod Brinda Moore.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, yeah.
- 37:20Speaker 3: I should call my mom. And my mom is an
- 37:24Speaker 3: honestly god, she's a monster. She watches every game she's
- 37:26Speaker 3: been since she was looking like a kid. She's a
- 37:29Speaker 3: monster flyer. I was. I was joking with her. They're
- 37:31Speaker 3: driving down right now, and I told her, I said,
- 37:33Speaker 3: if you don't bring a homemade Stanley cup with you,
- 37:37Speaker 3: because That's my favorite thing about playoff hockey is the
- 37:39Speaker 3: homemade Stanley Cup. The guys that show up with the
- 37:41Speaker 3: game with the tim foil Stanley Cup the best. Uh third,
- 37:44Speaker 3: I'd go Bernie paranh bigger, larger than life personality, you know,
- 37:49Speaker 3: that would be mine Rod you Gray.
- 37:52Speaker 6: Yeah, I was saying the exact same thing. And I
- 37:55Speaker 6: say I didn't play with Bernie or anything, but he
- 37:58Speaker 6: was our goldie coach when I out there, and just
- 38:02Speaker 6: the personality. I mean, you know, you just love being
- 38:06Speaker 6: around him. So yeah, you hit that one right on
- 38:08Speaker 6: the head.
- 38:09Speaker 1: All right, So Rock give us your fourth on you
- 38:12Speaker 1: guys had the same three. This is amazing, I guess,
- 38:14Speaker 1: So who's your fourth there?
- 38:15Speaker 2: Right at? This?
- 38:17Speaker 6: Is this our last one?
- 38:19Speaker 2: Yes?
- 38:19Speaker 6: Because it gets it gets sticky now right now, I'm
- 38:25Speaker 6: you know, attached to the older guys, but I have
- 38:27Speaker 6: to go with a guy and probably play with and
- 38:30Speaker 6: I have to maybe stick in the big e. Yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 6: just because he was such a good player, and I
- 38:37Speaker 6: hate that he got kind of the concussions kind of
- 38:39Speaker 6: slowed him down. But I mean one of the more
- 38:43Speaker 6: dominant players ever play the game.
- 38:45Speaker 2: And so I have to say Eric for my purposes,
- 38:48Speaker 2: big e. Is Eric Glendross right, Yes, yes.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Yes, yes, And I believe Phil was nodding in agreement
- 38:54Speaker 1: with you that that would be his fourth right.
- 38:57Speaker 3: I already agree. If you're sticking to players now, I
- 38:59Speaker 3: would say the one little caveat and say, if you're
- 39:02Speaker 3: going to go and expand beyond players, Ed Snyder would
- 39:05Speaker 3: have to be mentioned in some capacity.
- 39:07Speaker 6: Oh yeah, make that switch.
- 39:12Speaker 2: We're making the switch.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Out of here.
- 39:17Speaker 3: But if you're saying players, it's one hundred percent, I
- 39:21Speaker 3: think we're right on the money for for four.
- 39:24Speaker 1: I think I think robe a great story.
- 39:26Speaker 6: With the reason I say you agree with with mister
- 39:31Speaker 6: Snyder was I mean that, you know, back in the day,
- 39:33Speaker 6: there wasn't a lot of owners that that were kind
- 39:36Speaker 6: of front and center. And then like he wanted to win. Man.
- 39:39Speaker 6: I mean, I met that guy so many times, and
- 39:42Speaker 6: I had an incident one time in a game where
- 39:44Speaker 6: the rest threw me out of the game and and
- 39:47Speaker 6: I'm like, for it was something stupid, they know no reason.
- 39:50Speaker 6: He came down after the game and asked me what
- 39:53Speaker 6: happened and I'm still in my jersey and I and
- 39:56Speaker 6: I just told him, you know, the rep did whatever.
- 39:58Speaker 6: He didn't even he didn't wait me to finish, and
- 40:01Speaker 6: he ran down the hallway where the refs were and
- 40:03Speaker 6: kicked the door and I'm like looking around the corner
- 40:05Speaker 6: and he started chewing the ref out for you know,
- 40:08Speaker 6: treating me not correctly, and he literally said, you don't
- 40:11Speaker 6: ever treat a Flyer that way. And I was just like, damn, wow.
- 40:16Speaker 6: I'm glad I was telling the right story because you know,
- 40:19Speaker 6: but like he that's kind of how he felt like
- 40:22Speaker 6: you were. It didn't matter you put on that Flyers jersey.
- 40:25Speaker 6: You were one of his boys and that was special.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Rod.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Thank you so much for doing this. Good luck in
- 40:32Speaker 1: the next round. I think I don't know. I mean,
- 40:33Speaker 1: Phil's not witsching you luck. And by the way, if
- 40:36Speaker 1: martelly Son needs tickets to one of these Flyers game,
- 40:38Speaker 1: he's gonna hit you up.
- 40:39Speaker 6: Okay, just so you know, lose my number.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Thank you, Ron, good luck moving forward here. We appreciate it.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Thank you all right. What is it like for you, Phil?
- 40:53Speaker 1: I mean, that's a guy that you love and you're
- 40:55Speaker 1: doing a mount rushmore of Flyers with Rod Burden of
- 40:58Speaker 1: Bor who's coaching Carolina.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Well, I'm telling you when I tell my mom it
- 41:03Speaker 3: was just on with Rob Brindamore. She's gonna lose her mind.
- 41:06Speaker 3: The other funny Flyers story from our family is when
- 41:08Speaker 3: they won one of those Stanley Cups, seventy six, seventy seven,
- 41:13Speaker 3: something like that. My dad has a story, him and
- 41:15Speaker 3: his friend. Actually, this might even been before they won
- 41:17Speaker 3: the Stanley Cup. It might have been in the early seventies.
- 41:19Speaker 3: They went down to the airport, found out when they
- 41:23Speaker 3: were getting in. They went down to the airport dressed
- 41:25Speaker 3: as hockey players. He's in the paper or the news
- 41:29Speaker 3: or something. His picture. I've never seen it, but he
- 41:33Speaker 3: does tell that story. Now, I've never known him. They did.
- 41:36Speaker 3: My parents did go to a game three, I think
- 41:39Speaker 3: of the last series. I don't know if they'll be
- 41:42Speaker 3: in on any of these games. But my mom's she is,
- 41:45Speaker 3: she's into it. She's always been into it.
- 41:47Speaker 1: All Right, let's make this a family affair. Next time
- 41:49Speaker 1: you come on, let's bring on the sun. And then
- 41:51Speaker 1: the following time you come on, let's bring mom on.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Okay, when the Flyers are in, when they're in the finals,
- 41:56Speaker 3: and bringing mom.
- 41:57Speaker 5: On, Yes, listen, I'm also voting that he can go
- 42:02Speaker 5: to game seven and skip the baptism.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the communion mean, excuse me, communion, But secretly you're
- 42:11Speaker 2: okay with it if he.
- 42:12Speaker 3: Did, because he's gonna badger her the way that he
- 42:15Speaker 3: is going to badger her all day. Yes, and keep
- 42:18Speaker 3: saying like, I'm going to Game seven, I'm going. Dad
- 42:19Speaker 3: said I could go blah blah blah blah blah. He'll
- 42:21Speaker 3: listen to this, he'll say if he said I could go,
- 42:23Speaker 3: like it's gonna be tell.
- 42:25Speaker 5: Him I don't even remember my communion. I remember every
- 42:27Speaker 5: game seven.
- 42:28Speaker 1: I've been yes, let's let's let's do this to uh,
- 42:30Speaker 1: to poor missus Martelly. I tell you you're good with
- 42:33Speaker 1: the kid going? Yes, I vote yes, yeah, Mikey good
- 42:35Speaker 1: with the kid going.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Of course that's what he's gonna.
- 42:38Speaker 1: I'm totally fine. I think the kids should go. The
- 42:41Speaker 1: memories will will last a lifetime. And this is what
- 42:44Speaker 1: kids do when dad says no, they go straight to
- 42:46Speaker 1: mom because they know eventually Mom is gonna cave.
- 42:48Speaker 3: You know that, right, So since you guys all said yes,
- 42:53Speaker 3: uh still pay for you, you're gonna put together.
- 42:58Speaker 2: And I got it, Yes, yeah, I got it.
- 43:00Speaker 1: I'll take care of his flight I'll get him a ticket,
- 43:02Speaker 1: I'll get him a meal.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Even how about that, you know.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Well, good luck with that. Everything's the door dashes that
- 43:11Speaker 3: come to the hause of what, like, what are we
- 43:13Speaker 3: doing here?
- 43:15Speaker 2: Every fifteen minutes? Right, every fifteen minutes? It's crazy.
- 43:18Speaker 1: I mean, get off your ass and go out and
- 43:20Speaker 1: pick something up, you know, That's what I'm saying.
- 43:22Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying. He's he has not gotten his
- 43:25Speaker 3: permit or his license yet, and I keep saying, I'm like,
- 43:27Speaker 3: you know, like, once you do, you can just go.
- 43:30Speaker 3: You'll be able to go to Chick fil A, to
- 43:32Speaker 3: these places that place to pull it whatever, like all
- 43:34Speaker 3: day long and I won't even know, so you won't
- 43:36Speaker 3: have to listen to me when I see the bags
- 43:38Speaker 3: pull like, what are we doing? Food right there?
- 43:40Speaker 1: But who wants to do that when the food is
- 43:41Speaker 1: delivered right to your door?
- 43:42Speaker 2: I mean the.
- 43:43Speaker 3: Best is when he told me it doesn't cost any
- 43:45Speaker 3: more than if you go pick it up the thing.
- 43:46Speaker 3: I go, oh, really, I think those companies are sponsoring
- 43:50Speaker 3: the NBA Finals and these things.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Does he not see that line that says taxes and fees.
- 43:55Speaker 3: You don't care, you know what it is? You know
- 43:58Speaker 3: the commercials like the you know, turn It into your parents.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Those are the moments where you realize you're like, oh
- 44:03Speaker 3: my god, I'm turning into my father. Food right there,
- 44:06Speaker 3: Eat that food.
- 44:07Speaker 1: You're turning into Phil marks Elly Senior. All Right, coach,
- 44:13Speaker 1: we enjoyed this. I hope you enjoyed your opportunity there
- 44:17Speaker 1: with Rob Brendan Moore.
- 44:18Speaker 2: That was fun.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And good luck to the Flyers and good luck to
- 44:21Speaker 1: the Sixers tomorrow. And I have the Sixers winning that
- 44:22Speaker 1: thing I do Sixers Nicks. That's gonna be fun.
- 44:26Speaker 3: I appreciate you guys. It's always a blast coming on.
- 44:28Speaker 2: All right, thank you,
