- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreeger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: another episode of the Season with Peter Schreger. We're entering
- 0:27Speaker 1: week eight of this NFL campaign and we're coming off
- 0:31Speaker 1: a week where the Patriots beat the Bills, the Vikings
- 0:34Speaker 1: beat the forty nine ers, and the New York Giants
- 0:39Speaker 1: got back on track beating the Washington Commanders. There was
- 0:41Speaker 1: so much intrigue going into this week about the Detroit Lions,
- 0:45Speaker 1: and then the Baltimore Ravens absolutely walloped them in Baltimore
- 0:50Speaker 1: and did so physically, like watching Ronnie Stanley block poor
- 0:54Speaker 1: Kirby Joseph. I think he's in the stand somewhere. He
- 0:56Speaker 1: threw him around so hard. And it's just week to week,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you know, it's hard to do like power rankings, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: this is the MVP because things change week two week,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and that's the beauty of the sport. I'm joined here
- 1:08Speaker 1: by Aaron wan Kaufman, our producer.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Aaron.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm still thinking about the Sunday night game though, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: what the Eagles did to the Dolphins. Did did you
- 1:16Speaker 1: watch that game?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, yep. I was texting with one of my
- 1:20Speaker 2: friends who's a writer, who is a huge Eagles fan,
- 1:23Speaker 2: and the difference in our emotion, like me having watched
- 1:27Speaker 2: the Bills game earlier in the day and him currently
- 1:29Speaker 2: watching the Eagles game. I mean, it was it was.
- 1:32Speaker 2: They were very good. It was it was like strength,
- 1:35Speaker 2: they were speed, and.
- 1:36Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Your friend's a writer. What's he writing?
- 1:40Speaker 2: And he writes for NFL writing, He works at ESP Nation.
- 1:44Speaker 2: What's his name, Ben Nathan?
- 1:47Speaker 1: What's up? Ben? You gotta read his stuff here. All along,
- 1:50Speaker 1: I thought you were my buddy and that you and
- 1:51Speaker 1: I are the ones texting, And now you've got this
- 1:53Speaker 1: other side. Check Ben Nathan at esp Nation that you're texting.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It's like finding out your wife is as a whole
- 2:01Speaker 1: other thing going on with some other guy in the
- 2:03Speaker 1: same exact line of work.
- 2:04Speaker 2: All right here, I got a workshop my takes before
- 2:06Speaker 2: I bring them.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I got it.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I gotta be ready.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I got it. I got it. And if I start
- 2:10Speaker 1: seeing my takes on Ben Nathan's by the Eagles win
- 2:18Speaker 1: was huge and they'll continue to roll and we'll see
- 2:21Speaker 1: them in the playoffs. On this thing, I wanted to
- 2:23Speaker 1: use the Eagles as a Peg because I made the
- 2:26Speaker 1: comment on Good Morning Football on Monday morning, like, my
- 2:29Speaker 1: big takeaway from that game is that AJ Brown is
- 2:31Speaker 1: an absolute force and this dude is a is a beast,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and in a world where my kid wants to be
- 2:41Speaker 1: Tyreek Hill for Halloween and his friend wants to be
- 2:44Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson because he does the gritty and Tyreek does celebrate.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Like AJ Brown's as good as both those guys this year,
- 2:50Speaker 1: if not the best wide receiver in all of football.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And the stat that came out since he had like
- 2:56Speaker 1: a little sideline blow up on what was that a
- 2:58Speaker 1: Thursday night game against the Vikings, he and Jalen Hurts were,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you know, going back and forth. He's had one hundred
- 3:04Speaker 1: and twenty five yards or more in every single game.
- 3:07Speaker 1: That's five straight games. And the stat that ESPN was
- 3:10Speaker 1: showing it was first NBC, but then ESPN all day
- 3:15Speaker 1: yesterday on Instagram and it was made the rounds that
- 3:18Speaker 1: he and Calvin Johnson are the only receivers this century
- 3:21Speaker 1: to go for one hundred and twenty five yards or
- 3:24Speaker 1: more five straight games. Now, I am going to take
- 3:28Speaker 1: ninety nine percent of the credit here, but one percent
- 3:30Speaker 1: of this did come from a Twitter follower who sent
- 3:33Speaker 1: this to me and was like, you need a nickname
- 3:37Speaker 1: for aj Brown whatever he's got, and to use the
- 3:40Speaker 1: word John in the nickname. I thought of it and
- 3:44Speaker 1: I went with it on the air. Mega John, Mega John.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I like that a lot. That's very good.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So the stat that came up was the only two
- 3:56Speaker 1: players to go for one twenty five or more and
- 3:59Speaker 1: five straight games was Mega John and Megatron okay, which
- 4:06Speaker 1: then led my beautiful mind, crazy brain, sick, neurotic, where
- 4:10Speaker 1: the hell does my brain go to? The Are they
- 4:13Speaker 1: the only guys to do it? So I asked my
- 4:15Speaker 1: producer and Good Morning Football, nice dude named Rich Goldberg.
- 4:18Speaker 1: He works out of Mount Laurel, New Jersey. I think
- 4:20Speaker 1: he's in like uh, like he lives at the facility
- 4:25Speaker 1: because anytime, at any hour I'm texting him. He's like
- 4:27Speaker 1: deep in the NFL film's archives, like going through tape.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And I said, is there anyone else who did this?
- 4:32Speaker 1: Because it keeps on saying since two thousands, since two thousands,
- 4:35Speaker 1: So who did it in ninety nine and ninety eight?
- 4:38Speaker 1: And the answer was Pat stud Still did it in
- 4:42Speaker 1: nineteen sixty six. I said, who the is Pat stud Still.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So I I'm like, we gotta do a deep dive.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Who is Pat stud Still? I don't know. I know
- 4:54Speaker 1: Lance Alworth, I know Jerry Rice, I know Steve Largin,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I know Randy Maws. I even I could tell you
- 5:02Speaker 1: a lot about Ernest Givens and Curtis Duncan and Webster Slaughter.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I mean, do so many names. Rob Moore on the
- 5:07Speaker 1: Cardinals had some good year, Ricky prol on the Cardinals,
- 5:10Speaker 1: ZERI we can go through all of the most random
- 5:14Speaker 1: wide receiver big breakout seasons, from Tory Holt to Aza
- 5:17Speaker 1: Quem to Isaac Bruce to Rod Smith. Let we go
- 5:20Speaker 1: to that. My brain works that way. Stud Still I
- 5:23Speaker 1: did not know that name. I'd never heard of that name.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So I'm like, who is Pat stud Still? So we
- 5:29Speaker 1: start doing some research. Let me tell you about Pet
- 5:32Speaker 1: stud Still. This is how most podcasts start. In week
- 5:35Speaker 1: eight at twenty twenty three, they say, let's go into
- 5:37Speaker 1: a Pet stud Still deep dive. Studstill was an undrafted
- 5:41Speaker 1: player out of Houston goes to the Detroit Lions, where
- 5:44Speaker 1: he is primarily a kick and punt returner for the
- 5:47Speaker 1: first several years of his career. Nineteen sixty six, he
- 5:52Speaker 1: goes and has one of the great wide receiver seasons
- 5:54Speaker 1: of all time. And this is back when they used
- 5:56Speaker 1: to have the you know, the goalpost at the front
- 5:59Speaker 1: of the end zone and they would play like twelve games.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Sixty six stud still went for sixty seven catches twelve
- 6:06Speaker 1: in sixty six yards, which is like, you know, it's
- 6:09Speaker 1: like in today the milk. The price of milk, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: back then was straight down, so now it's all that
- 6:15Speaker 1: The equivalent is like if a guy randomly I didn't
- 6:17Speaker 1: know where this year, came out and had like two
- 6:19Speaker 1: hundred catches and four thousand yards, Like that's what the
- 6:21Speaker 1: numbers were for pet studs still, so I'm like, what
- 6:25Speaker 1: the hell? Like who what did it?
- 6:27Speaker 2: For?
- 6:27Speaker 1: The Lions? Like a bad Lions team. He had a
- 6:29Speaker 1: ninety nine yard catch in that game, So I'm like,
- 6:31Speaker 1: all right, So what was the rest of his career?
- 6:34Speaker 1: Heard his hamstring didn't do much. The rest of his
- 6:37Speaker 1: career at wide receiver was kind of irrelevant. But in
- 6:42Speaker 1: sixty six, in addition to being the punt returner and
- 6:45Speaker 1: the kick returner, he picked up punting duties for the
- 6:48Speaker 1: Detroit Lions and was their full time punter. This wasn't
- 6:52Speaker 1: the thirties when guys played both ways or the forties
- 6:55Speaker 1: where it's like we have seven running backs and a
- 6:56Speaker 1: million dollar backfa year old. This is like late sixties,
- 7:00Speaker 1: like Lombardi was coaching and Hank Stram was coaching, like
- 7:03Speaker 1: this was like relevant. He was the team's number one
- 7:06Speaker 1: wi receiver and their full time punter. So that was
- 7:11Speaker 1: sixty six. They trade him to the Rams. He then
- 7:14Speaker 1: goes and has six more years in his NFL career
- 7:16Speaker 1: just as a punter. I'm like, who the hell is
- 7:19Speaker 1: this guy? Why has that not been a documentary on
- 7:21Speaker 1: Pat stud Still? This is incredible. Led the league in punts,
- 7:24Speaker 1: led the league in punts yardage, like the stat that's crazy.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Sixty two he leads the NFL and punt return yards,
- 7:31Speaker 1: sixty six, leads the NFL in receiving yards, and then
- 7:34Speaker 1: in like sixty seven, he leads the NFL in most punts.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Was a two time pro bowler. Eventually retires in seventy one,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and then Aaron because this is just Pat stud Still
- 7:46Speaker 1: and who he is. Then he goes on to become
- 7:50Speaker 1: a very successful actor and he's in Dukes of Hazard
- 7:54Speaker 1: and he's in two hundred different commercials, not two commercials,
- 7:57Speaker 1: two hundred different commercials. And in nineteen seventy four, Burt
- 8:02Speaker 1: Reynolds and the guys who put on the original Longest
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yard movie tapped Pat stud Still to work on the movie,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and he was the guy who did all the technical
- 8:10Speaker 1: football stuff. He was their guide. So on all these
- 8:13Speaker 1: sports movies, they'll have a technical guy to come on
- 8:15Speaker 1: and be like, well, you wouldn't throw the ball that way,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and the line of scrimmage would actually be a little
- 8:19Speaker 1: bit lined up this way. The guard would be stud
- 8:22Speaker 1: Still worked on the set for all those days on
- 8:24Speaker 1: the Longest Yard production goes on, has this awesome acting career.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I had never heard of Pat stud Still. He eventually
- 8:33Speaker 1: passed in twenty twenty one. I was reading his obituary today.
- 8:36Speaker 1: They also said he was the last guy to resist
- 8:41Speaker 1: wearing the Ridell face mask, So he was wearing one
- 8:44Speaker 1: of these old school helmets with an old school face
- 8:47Speaker 1: mask when the rest of the NFL was already moving
- 8:49Speaker 1: on in the sixties and seventies. I say all this
- 8:51Speaker 1: to say the following. I've seen the docs. I've seen
- 8:59Speaker 1: the thirty for thirties I've seen the Football Lives. We
- 9:03Speaker 1: know everything you could possibly know about Deacon Jones, about
- 9:08Speaker 1: Tim Brown, about OJ Simpson, about Dion Sanders. I think
- 9:13Speaker 1: we need to executive produce a Pat stud Still documentary. Aaron,
- 9:20Speaker 1: are you in ongoing deep on the life of stud Still?
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah. We talk about stud Still as like the the
- 9:27Speaker 2: origin of positionless players. Yeah, we get we get Debo
- 9:31Speaker 2: in there, we get yeah Hill, Yeah, no, I love it.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And then then after that we force each of them
- 9:38Speaker 2: to re enact Dukes of Hazzard scenes too, to just
- 9:41Speaker 2: show out. I mean, I can't believe to do those
- 9:45Speaker 2: different positions and then also break into acting. Is that's
- 9:49Speaker 2: a wild ride?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Yeah? Well, the big story out of Kansas City this
- 9:53Speaker 1: past week was a little mentioned in Dave tab the
- 9:55Speaker 1: Special Teams coordinators press conference that you know with Tommy
- 9:58Speaker 1: Townsend hurt. Pat Mahomes is our backup hunter, and it
- 10:00Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, dude, this guy was returning punts,
- 10:04Speaker 1: returning kicks, playing why receiver and he was also in
- 10:07Speaker 1: sixty six. He was their full time punter. So he's
- 10:09Speaker 1: leading the NFL and receiving cards and was the best
- 10:12Speaker 1: punter in the sport. Gets hurt, and then it was like,
- 10:15Speaker 1: all right, I'm not going to play receiver anymore. I'll
- 10:17Speaker 1: just be a punter. We've probably spent four minutes too
- 10:19Speaker 1: long on Pat stud Still. But if if you're a
- 10:22Speaker 1: fan of the season with Peter Schreger, you know this
- 10:24Speaker 1: is the stuff you're here for. And it's knowledge like
- 10:27Speaker 1: that and my quest to learn and my desire to
- 10:32Speaker 1: become an expert on things like Pat stud Still. That
- 10:36Speaker 1: makes me a wonderful contestant on Jeopardy, Aaron, can I
- 10:40Speaker 1: talk about it one more time if the listeners didn't
- 10:42Speaker 1: watch or listen last week, I am appearing on Celebrity
- 10:46Speaker 1: Jeopardy this week and it's airing on Wednesday, October twenty
- 10:49Speaker 1: fifth at eight pm Eastern. It is on ABC, it
- 10:52Speaker 1: is in prime time. I am a contestant. It is
- 10:55Speaker 1: of the celebrity version. We discussed the celebrity aspect of
- 11:00Speaker 1: it last week. How uncomfortable I am with that word,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and yet I will wear it because it got me
- 11:05Speaker 1: onto the show. I would have never been able to
- 11:07Speaker 1: compete with the actual people who are on Jeopardy. I'm
- 11:09Speaker 1: not smart enough for that. But the celebrities, they are dumb,
- 11:12Speaker 1: so I can. I can compete with celebrities. When you're
- 11:16Speaker 1: busy looking in the mirror most of your life and
- 11:19Speaker 1: not searching Wikipedia and reading encyclopedias, you can get on
- 11:23Speaker 1: celebrity Jeopardy. So I competed. We recorded in August. I
- 11:28Speaker 1: have not revealed anything. I was wavering. I was like,
- 11:32Speaker 1: do I go big and talk about it or do
- 11:34Speaker 1: I just let it kind of appear. We talked about
- 11:36Speaker 1: it last week. I've gotten so many responses, people being
- 11:38Speaker 1: blown away. I posted a photo on my Twitter feed
- 11:41Speaker 1: of me at the Jeopardy podium. What do you call it?
- 11:45Speaker 1: A podium? Were like, and I showed how I wrote
- 11:50Speaker 1: my name and I went capslock first name. A couple
- 11:55Speaker 1: of people were like, how do you not go shregs?
- 11:57Speaker 1: How do you not go Schrager? That's what people call you.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Went with Peter in capslocks. It's the name my parents
- 12:05Speaker 1: gave me. And I'll say this, we're twenty four hours
- 12:08Speaker 1: from it airing or about that. We're recording this on Tuesday.
- 12:12Speaker 1: It's a showdown, bro. It goes to the wire and
- 12:16Speaker 1: it is epic and it's one of the best episodes
- 12:18Speaker 1: that program. And it's one hundred years I've ever had,
- 12:22Speaker 1: very proud of not only myself, but my two contestants,
- 12:25Speaker 1: my opponents. They all did very well. It would be
- 12:27Speaker 1: Mira Sorvino, who I have not spoken to since, and
- 12:30Speaker 1: Adam Rodriguez, who I have not spoken to since. That's blood, bro,
- 12:34Speaker 1: That's what it is like. Once you we left it
- 12:36Speaker 1: on the field. I honestly I thought walking out of
- 12:39Speaker 1: that that they I'm like, all right, these where the
- 12:41Speaker 1: three of us are gonna be connected for life, Like
- 12:43Speaker 1: we're gonna have store. I haven't talked to either one
- 12:45Speaker 1: of them since, so maybe after the show airs, we'll
- 12:48Speaker 1: rekindle the magic and the chemistry we had on the show.
- 12:50Speaker 1: But it's an hour long. It's Celebrity Jeopardy. If you've watched,
- 12:55Speaker 1: there is not only regular Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy, there's
- 12:58Speaker 1: Triple Jeopardy, so there's three different portions of it, and
- 13:02Speaker 1: then there's Final Jeopardy. I think I'll save some of
- 13:06Speaker 1: the recap stuff till next week. I will just say this,
- 13:09Speaker 1: it's the coolest thing I ever got to do professionally.
- 13:12Speaker 1: And I've been on the field at Super Bowls and
- 13:14Speaker 1: I've interviewed everyone from Tom Brady to Patrick Mahomes, and
- 13:17Speaker 1: I've gotten to meet crazy, cool and interesting people being
- 13:21Speaker 1: at that that set which they also film Wheel of
- 13:26Speaker 1: Fortune next door, which I didn't even know, like Merv
- 13:28Speaker 1: Griffin birthed them both. I guess like they're they're in
- 13:31Speaker 1: that same studio. Childhood memories and memories of all the
- 13:37Speaker 1: you know, great hours of my college days spent on
- 13:41Speaker 1: the couch but watching Jeopardy. But then also like the
- 13:44Speaker 1: celebrity Jeopardy spoofs on Saturday Live with Will Ferrell and
- 13:48Speaker 1: Norm McDonald and you know, all of it, it all
- 13:51Speaker 1: comes flashing back, so very cool emotional experience and also
- 13:56Speaker 1: just an awesome, awesome thing to say I have done.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And especially because last week you were saying how as
- 14:04Speaker 2: a kid you would be sitting at the dining room
- 14:06Speaker 2: table watching Jeopardy with your family.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I wish kitchen table, table, kitchen. There was no dining
- 14:12Speaker 1: room that we dined.
- 14:13Speaker 2: At, Sorry New York. Yeah, it's the same.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Thing, kitchen, kitchen, table with a little TV free Old
- 14:19Speaker 1: New Jersey, and it was my dad would walk in
- 14:22Speaker 1: the door like six fifty seven, we'd sit down, there'd
- 14:25Speaker 1: be like a slice of candle lope we'd eat that.
- 14:27Speaker 1: You probably have some London broil, and then it's oh, yeah,
- 14:31Speaker 1: we've started a little Candleope, maybe a little grapefruit I
- 14:34Speaker 1: can get.
- 14:34Speaker 3: That's it.
- 14:35Speaker 1: That's a little starter there. And then we would watch
- 14:38Speaker 1: Jeopardy for a half hour, and then my brother and
- 14:40Speaker 1: I would scurry off into like another room and say
- 14:43Speaker 1: three your computer. Yeah, playing in the computer. That's what
- 14:45Speaker 1: we do. Uh. Wednesday night, October twenty fifth, eight pm
- 14:51Speaker 1: Eastern Celebrity Jeopardy And now, with no further ado, our
- 14:56Speaker 1: guests for the for the episode, I'm I don't know
- 14:59Speaker 1: where it's going to go. I'm recording this whole thing live.
- 15:02Speaker 1: We're gonna get the guest on in a second. So
- 15:04Speaker 1: I don't know if he's a big personality. If he's
- 15:06Speaker 1: a big personality, but I need to know more about
- 15:08Speaker 1: Tyson Bagent, who I'm just starting to scratch the surface on.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And I got his head coach from his college days
- 15:17Speaker 1: on the podcast. The Great Ernie McCook is joining us
- 15:21Speaker 1: right after this, all right, So I spent Sunday afternoon
- 15:29Speaker 1: watching the Bears and Raiders game, and I'm watching Tyson beagent,
- 15:33Speaker 1: an undrafted rookie free Agent out of Shepherd in West
- 15:37Speaker 1: Virginia Division two school, become the first quarterback to be
- 15:42Speaker 1: an undrafted rookie at a Division two to win a
- 15:45Speaker 1: game since nineteen fifty. And I'm reading everything I can
- 15:50Speaker 1: possibly read about the guy because I'm fascinated about his
- 15:52Speaker 1: path and his journey, and time and time again, I'm
- 15:55Speaker 1: reading awesome quotes and awesome stories and great encouragement from
- 16:00Speaker 1: his college coach, the great Ernie McCook out of Shepherd.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So what we're doing the podcast this week? I'm like,
- 16:05Speaker 1: what's the story of the week, what's it's I'm asking Aaron,
- 16:07Speaker 1: who should we talk about? What if he's kept down?
- 16:09Speaker 1: Coming up? Tyson Pagent, Tyson Bagent, Tyson Vagent. So with
- 16:13Speaker 1: no further ado, let's get his college coach on the podcast,
- 16:16Speaker 1: Ernie McCook. Welcome to the season with Peter Schrager. Man.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Peter, it's great to be with you today, and we're
- 16:21Speaker 3: going to talk about probably two of my favorite things,
- 16:23Speaker 3: Sheppard University football and Tyson Beaging.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Let's start with Shepherd University football. So you're a coach
- 16:30Speaker 1: for a few years now. You had history with this
- 16:34Speaker 1: program before bouncing around a little bit and then coming
- 16:36Speaker 1: back to the school, what is Shepherd University? And I'm
- 16:40Speaker 1: not being insulting as an NFL guys being out of it.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Where are you guys enrollment all the stuff? And then sure,
- 16:47Speaker 1: what has this done for the program?
- 16:49Speaker 3: Yeah? Our address is West Virginia. The campus sits right
- 16:52Speaker 3: on the banks of the Potomac River. We're literally from
- 16:56Speaker 3: one end of a football field to the other end
- 16:58Speaker 3: of the football field from the state of Maryland. We're
- 17:01Speaker 3: hour and fifteen minutes out of Washington, DC and hour
- 17:03Speaker 3: and fifteen minutes out of Baltimore. So we are able
- 17:07Speaker 3: to recruit as you're probably familiar with the DMV. Yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 3: we recruited from Richmond to Baltimore off that ninety five corridor.
- 17:15Speaker 3: And we want to recruit in state to be especially
- 17:17Speaker 3: locally in state. And we've had a lot of opportunities
- 17:22Speaker 3: to track some really good football players along with Tyson Beaging.
- 17:27Speaker 3: You know, we've had some really guys that have gone
- 17:30Speaker 3: on and done some really good things playing at the
- 17:34Speaker 3: next level, but nobody has had quite the first game
- 17:38Speaker 3: like Tyson had on Saturday versus the Raiders.
- 17:42Speaker 1: And no one is invited to the Senior Bowl, and
- 17:44Speaker 1: you had multiple guys invited to the Senior Bowl last year,
- 17:47Speaker 1: and I know you were there and you brought a
- 17:48Speaker 1: whole cast of guys down there to Mobile. We'll go
- 17:52Speaker 1: backwards and start from the start with Jijan, but I
- 17:55Speaker 1: think just just that experience when you go to the
- 17:57Speaker 1: Senior Bowl out of Division two school and Jim Nagy,
- 18:00Speaker 1: who runs that thing, gives you guys the call. I
- 18:02Speaker 1: loved it because I heard it. I was listening to
- 18:04Speaker 1: an interview I do my reaching for the podcast. You
- 18:06Speaker 1: had about four different coaches with you. Guys were finding
- 18:09Speaker 1: your way to the field. You're going to support your guy, Yeah,
- 18:12Speaker 1: did you have any doubt that he would be able
- 18:14Speaker 1: to light it up and do just fine against that
- 18:15Speaker 1: Division one talent?
- 18:16Speaker 3: Well, I got to tell you a story about when
- 18:18Speaker 3: Jim Naggy called me. Right. So, I'm sitting right here
- 18:23Speaker 3: in my office, it's probably eight or nine o'clock at night,
- 18:26Speaker 3: and you know what, I take it back. It was
- 18:28Speaker 3: the call for Joey Fisher, the second guy to get
- 18:31Speaker 3: called up. So I see this Arizona phone number and
- 18:35Speaker 3: I'm thinking, man, it's probably Scout wanting to come to practice.
- 18:39Speaker 3: So I get him a call back. He goes, Hey,
- 18:41Speaker 3: he said this, Jim Naggy is Senior Bowl coach. I
- 18:44Speaker 3: just wanted to tell you we're going to invite Joey
- 18:47Speaker 3: Fisher to join Tyson Baiging at the Senior Bowl. And
- 18:51Speaker 3: he goes, just so you know, this will be the
- 18:53Speaker 3: first time in the history we think of the Senior
- 18:55Speaker 3: Bowl that will have had two Division two players from
- 18:58Speaker 3: the same team being playing the same game. And so
- 19:03Speaker 3: then he kind of he said, I kind of took
- 19:07Speaker 3: it all in and I said, you know, Jim, you're
- 19:08Speaker 3: gonna make me have to come to this game. Yeah,
- 19:11Speaker 3: and then he was like, You're not gonna come just
- 19:13Speaker 3: for Tyson. And then I thought about how bad that
- 19:16Speaker 3: sounded on you too, and yeah, I mean it takes two.
- 19:20Speaker 3: You got to take two of my guys, and that's
- 19:24Speaker 3: not true. But so I was really excited at that point,
- 19:28Speaker 3: and I thought, Jim Naggy, you know, if you think
- 19:30Speaker 3: about Tyson's kind of climb. Uh, he took the first
- 19:34Speaker 3: real shot on Tyson Baging given him an opportunity to
- 19:37Speaker 3: play in the Senior Bowl. You know, there's a lot
- 19:39Speaker 3: of great quarterbacks out there. He went out on a
- 19:42Speaker 3: limb and took a Division two guy, and I think
- 19:45Speaker 3: Tyson played extremely well in that game. Uh, it was
- 19:49Speaker 3: it was a lot of fun. We're sitting in the
- 19:50Speaker 3: staff meeting. We're a low budget football team, Pier all right,
- 19:53Speaker 3: So where we're in the staff meeting and we we
- 19:57Speaker 3: have some recruiting things going on, and I tell I
- 20:01Speaker 3: tell our coaches like, Hey, I'm going to go to
- 20:03Speaker 3: the Senior Bowl, but I'm going to drive. So we
- 20:05Speaker 3: drove Westford, Gia to Mobile, right and I said, we'll
- 20:11Speaker 3: pay the football pay for the hotel room and the
- 20:14Speaker 3: rental car. You guys are on your own for your
- 20:16Speaker 3: meals and drinks. And we had five people volunteer, so
- 20:20Speaker 3: we loaded up in the suv. We made the trip
- 20:24Speaker 3: down to Mobile and of course being able to watch
- 20:27Speaker 3: Tyson practice on the field there at South Alabama with
- 20:31Speaker 3: all the other guys. That was awesome. And it was
- 20:35Speaker 3: the Senior Bowl, I think is one of the greatest
- 20:37Speaker 3: events you could be a part of. And that may
- 20:40Speaker 3: have been as a proud of moment I had having
- 20:43Speaker 3: a chance to see Mike get our guy, our guy,
- 20:47Speaker 3: and the Senior Bowl represent Sheppard University with the ram
- 20:50Speaker 3: Horns on and playing what I think is the most
- 20:53Speaker 3: prestigious college All Star game there is.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Oh, it absolutely is. Let's go way back, though, because
- 20:59Speaker 1: it's not a necessarily it's it's a great Division two program,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but it's not an NFL hotbed. So you're the coach
- 21:04Speaker 1: here when you start recruiting Tyson out of what's the
- 21:09Speaker 1: town he's from.
- 21:09Speaker 3: It's in West Virginia, Martinsburg High School, and here in
- 21:12Speaker 3: West Virginia about seven miles.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Away, so it's close. It's in your backyard. He's probably
- 21:16Speaker 1: this high school star. Like, how's that recruitment process going?
- 21:19Speaker 1: Did you know when he was a junior and senior
- 21:21Speaker 1: that this kid could have a future.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Absolutely even better than that. I've known. I've watched Tyson
- 21:26Speaker 3: grow up. Our families go to church together, and I
- 21:30Speaker 3: will tell you from the time he played for the
- 21:32Speaker 3: Charlestown Razorbacks. Okay, I'd be sitting in the pew, him
- 21:37Speaker 3: and his dad would walk by, w we're going up
- 21:39Speaker 3: for communion, and he would nudge me he's going to
- 21:43Speaker 3: be the man at Shepherd one day. You know, if
- 21:44Speaker 3: you get a chance to talk to Travis, he'll tell you.
- 21:48Speaker 3: And one time he told what he used to tell me,
- 21:50Speaker 3: You're going to build a bronze statue of Tyson one day,
- 21:53Speaker 3: and of course you're in church, You're like, hey, that's awesome.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Maybe great.
- 21:57Speaker 1: You know, you know he's ten years old, eleven years
- 21:59Speaker 1: old at the time. Yeah, he was.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Probably eleven years old and just slinging around Charlestown and
- 22:04Speaker 3: everything like that. But you know, having known their family
- 22:07Speaker 3: and watch Tyson grow up, he is a special, special
- 22:12Speaker 3: person man. He is something I just can't say enough
- 22:15Speaker 3: great things about him as a human being. I mean,
- 22:18Speaker 3: just as a man. We're going through the recruiting process
- 22:22Speaker 3: and you know, I knew that he was a division
- 22:25Speaker 3: I thought he was a division one guy FBS, and
- 22:30Speaker 3: we're kind of going through it. I'm thinking he's going
- 22:33Speaker 3: to get something. But if he doesn't get something, you know,
- 22:36Speaker 3: he'll have a spot with us if this is what
- 22:38Speaker 3: he wants. And the only offers he really got were
- 22:42Speaker 3: SCS offers. He got an FCF Albany and I want
- 22:46Speaker 3: to say Robert Morris and some other D two's and
- 22:50Speaker 3: stuff like that. Well, in twenty fifteen we played for
- 22:53Speaker 3: a national championship, and so I think he just looked
- 22:57Speaker 3: at it and said, hey, I get a chance to
- 23:00Speaker 3: stay at home play highly competitive football at the Division
- 23:04Speaker 3: two level. I get a chance playing in front of
- 23:06Speaker 3: family and friends. Like his grandfather, God Rest his soul
- 23:10Speaker 3: passed away last year, was really close to him. He
- 23:12Speaker 3: would sit in the stands and watch practice. His dad
- 23:15Speaker 3: would come and watch practices. I mean, it's just a
- 23:19Speaker 3: family affair here for the beagents at Shepherd University playing
- 23:23Speaker 3: football here and Tyson, I can tell you he'd sent
- 23:27Speaker 3: me a text. I texted him after the game this
- 23:30Speaker 3: weekend and he and I said, hey, man, we're proud
- 23:33Speaker 3: of you. We watched the game as a team, and
- 23:36Speaker 3: he goes, he said, hey, thanks to a support coach
- 23:38Speaker 3: really appreciated. I love Shepherd football, you know. And it
- 23:43Speaker 3: was just like here's a guy playing at a high level,
- 23:46Speaker 3: achieving some of the goals that you know, dreams, dreams
- 23:49Speaker 3: that we all have, and he still has love for
- 23:52Speaker 3: this program that he was a part of and an
- 23:55Speaker 3: instrumental part of where we are today. So that, I mean,
- 23:59Speaker 3: that was that was kind of a cool deal.
- 24:01Speaker 1: When you get when you get this guy in there,
- 24:03Speaker 1: he come like, give me some of the exploits, because
- 24:06Speaker 1: how you get to the Paul Bunyan tall tail. Was
- 24:09Speaker 1: it just all right, here we go. This is Steve
- 24:11Speaker 1: McNair at Alcorn or one of these types of guys
- 24:13Speaker 1: at a different level of school. Just tear it up
- 24:16Speaker 1: the league.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Well, you know what his first game it was against
- 24:20Speaker 3: Nerdame College. Okay, it was a true freshman and Julia McLoughlin,
- 24:23Speaker 3: the running back at with the Broncos.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Right now goes yeah, Youngstown State, sure, Well before.
- 24:28Speaker 3: That he was at Nerdame College. Him and Tyson, both
- 24:31Speaker 3: their college stars, were in the same game. I think
- 24:35Speaker 3: Julil rushed for almost three hundred yards. Tyson threw for
- 24:38Speaker 3: five hundred yards. Two guys that right now are are
- 24:42Speaker 3: up and coming guys are had shows some things in
- 24:45Speaker 3: the NFL. When recruiting Tyson, I can tell you his dad.
- 24:49Speaker 3: His dad's hardcore.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Now his dad is arm wrestling champion, the arm.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Wrestling champion, the whole deal. Yeah, we're going through the
- 24:57Speaker 3: process of the recruiting before he commits to US. I
- 25:00Speaker 3: told you I go to church with him. Here's a
- 25:02Speaker 3: fun story for you. So Christmas Eve, my family and
- 25:05Speaker 3: I were getting late. Okay, so there's only a couple
- 25:09Speaker 3: of seats in the back of the church right and
- 25:11Speaker 3: my family and I slide into the pew, and of
- 25:14Speaker 3: course I'm I'm a football coach, and I want to
- 25:17Speaker 3: recruit Tysonvaging even on Christmas Eve at church all right,
- 25:21Speaker 3: because he's he was an All state player, He's the
- 25:23Speaker 3: best player in state West Virginia. And so I'm looking around.
- 25:27Speaker 3: I'm looking for where he's at, where he normally sits,
- 25:29Speaker 3: the whole deal. And then I look up, you know,
- 25:31Speaker 3: we're up for a hymnal and I see where him
- 25:34Speaker 3: and his dad are sitting. And then I see right
- 25:37Speaker 3: behind the pew is empty. There's nobody sitting in the
- 25:40Speaker 3: pew right behind him. So without even I didn't try
- 25:43Speaker 3: and even tell my wife anything, I just walked out
- 25:46Speaker 3: of arm keew.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Let's go. Yeah.
- 25:47Speaker 3: I walked around, went right down the middle of the church,
- 25:50Speaker 3: and our pastor, our priest, was like, I was wondering
- 25:55Speaker 3: what you did until you sat down. You know, he goes,
- 25:58Speaker 3: what the hell? He was probably like, what is Ernie
- 26:00Speaker 3: doing walking up here to the altar? But no, I
- 26:02Speaker 3: was walking in. I slid right in behind Tyson and
- 26:05Speaker 3: his dad, Travis, put my arm around him both, and
- 26:08Speaker 3: I said, hey, God, meant for us to be together.
- 26:12Speaker 3: And so then he and so his dad without missing
- 26:16Speaker 3: a beat, said hey man, it's about time you got here.
- 26:19Speaker 3: We've been saving that ce for you for twenty minutes.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Let's go. It's so good.
- 26:24Speaker 3: That was a lot of fun with that. I tell
- 26:27Speaker 3: that story quite a bit, so, you know, back to
- 26:30Speaker 3: the serious part. So Tyson commits. So he signs with
- 26:32Speaker 3: us his senior year in high school, wearing our spring practices. Right,
- 26:36Speaker 3: we have fifteen spring practices. Tyson is standing behind the
- 26:41Speaker 3: offensive huddle for every practice. He would he was at.
- 26:45Speaker 1: As a high school senior.
- 26:47Speaker 3: As a high school senior knowing I'm coming to Sheppard University,
- 26:50Speaker 3: I know I'm going to play and I'm going to
- 26:52Speaker 3: compete to be the quarterback, and he was taking it
- 26:55Speaker 3: all in. He was he was doing everything he could
- 26:58Speaker 3: do to learn, and so he's ready when he would
- 27:01Speaker 3: get to camp in August. And the guy is absolutely
- 27:06Speaker 3: nomenal with his work ethic and his competitiveness. He's somebody
- 27:10Speaker 3: that you know won I can tell you Chicago Bears,
- 27:13Speaker 3: the fan base, they will be proud that that dude
- 27:17Speaker 3: is a Bear. He's going to give everything he can
- 27:19Speaker 3: to help that team win. And I think I told
- 27:22Speaker 3: somebody else an interview. If he's on their practice squad,
- 27:26Speaker 3: all right, he's going to give the best look for
- 27:29Speaker 3: the Justice. He's going to be the best Justin Herbert. Yeah,
- 27:33Speaker 3: but for this weekend that the Bears defense will see
- 27:35Speaker 3: and tell you see Justin Herbert, you know. But the
- 27:38Speaker 3: fact that I think he worked his way into being
- 27:41Speaker 3: the backup and he prepares like nobody else does. After
- 27:47Speaker 3: OTA's this year and the summertime we get back. His
- 27:51Speaker 3: first day back, we were having our program, our team
- 27:54Speaker 3: golf outing, so he played in it. He came and
- 27:57Speaker 3: played in it with a couple of his teammates and
- 28:01Speaker 3: my son was who's coaching with us now. He and
- 28:04Speaker 3: Tyson were roommates. They're really close friends. So he said, hey, Michael,
- 28:09Speaker 3: I need you to guarantee you'll be with me at
- 28:12Speaker 3: every workout. So Michael would go to the workouts with him,
- 28:15Speaker 3: but Peter, they would practice, Michael would read the script
- 28:20Speaker 3: to him through the cell phone into his ear the
- 28:24Speaker 3: long play call. He would then be out in the
- 28:27Speaker 3: middle of our football field in the stadium, just the
- 28:29Speaker 3: two of them, by himself. He would walk into an
- 28:32Speaker 3: imaginary huddle, do the play call, walk up to the
- 28:35Speaker 3: line of scrimmage, put people in motion, practice the checks,
- 28:39Speaker 3: everything like that. He did it in June and July.
- 28:43Speaker 3: I did it for six weeks.
- 28:45Speaker 1: So we got one hundred degree weather in the middle
- 28:47Speaker 1: of West Virginia in July, and your son his former
- 28:51Speaker 1: wide receiver in his roommate.
- 28:53Speaker 3: It was a fool back, guy back.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Whatever it is. Sorry, I'm making up history because I'm
- 28:57Speaker 1: trying to do the movie script in my head. He
- 28:59Speaker 1: plays he plays a wide out in the movie. He
- 29:02Speaker 1: calls on a cell phone from where's your son? Is
- 29:05Speaker 1: he there with the Is he like in the stands?
- 29:07Speaker 3: Whereas no, he's standing on the sideline. So just like
- 29:10Speaker 3: like so he would have a script right now out
- 29:13Speaker 3: here like this, and he would go.
- 29:15Speaker 1: As if he has the helmet, oh.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Yeah, like Deuic's right.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Yeah, he's reading Luke Getzi's playbook. He's got the Bear's playbook.
- 29:23Speaker 3: He's got to play a bear's play call. So what
- 29:25Speaker 3: he's doing is he is simulating the mental preparation of
- 29:31Speaker 3: the length of a play call, because the play calls
- 29:34Speaker 3: are unbelievably long.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, And then like you know, and.
- 29:37Speaker 3: I'm you know, talking to Tyson and all I'm learning
- 29:40Speaker 3: a bunch of myself, like the different checks, how they're
- 29:42Speaker 3: checking things, the things they look for. And but when
- 29:47Speaker 3: a guy is doing that, think about this one for
- 29:49Speaker 3: a second. You're an undrafted free agent. You don't even
- 29:54Speaker 3: know if you're going to make the team.
- 29:55Speaker 1: You know, unlikely you would, Yeah.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Especially at the quarterback puisition. He goes and he's doing
- 30:03Speaker 3: this all summer long. So if my son went to
- 30:07Speaker 3: the beach on family vacation, they did it by telephone, right,
- 30:12Speaker 3: And so your son.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Is at the beach being like a slug o snake, right,
- 30:17Speaker 1: name call, and Tyson's on an empty field in the
- 30:19Speaker 1: middle of West Virginia just going through the Yeah.
- 30:22Speaker 3: And then when Tyson went to the beach, he would
- 30:25Speaker 3: go probably go out on the beach and practice it,
- 30:27Speaker 3: through with it. He did this religiously, you know. So
- 30:32Speaker 3: the guy is a film room junkie. I to you know,
- 30:36Speaker 3: I read the social media. But one of the one
- 30:38Speaker 3: of the Chicago stations asked me who I thought he was, Like,
- 30:41Speaker 3: who do you think you know? And everybody wants you
- 30:43Speaker 3: to say Tom Brady, They want you to say Brock Party,
- 30:47Speaker 3: they want you. They want that, right, they want that
- 30:51Speaker 3: to me. From what I've learned and studying football, Tyson
- 30:55Speaker 3: beagent is Drew Brees go on because the reputation Drew
- 31:01Speaker 3: Brees has for the tireless film study, the unbelievable work
- 31:06Speaker 3: ift that you have to prepare for any situation that
- 31:09Speaker 3: you get. That's who Tyson Beaging is. He will prepare
- 31:14Speaker 3: and work. He's going to physically train his body. When
- 31:16Speaker 3: he talked about shredding life way and crossfitfit, yeah, that's
- 31:21Speaker 3: one hundred percent accurate. Like, if you're ever in this area,
- 31:25Speaker 3: you need to come visit Shepard University because behind our
- 31:28Speaker 3: locker room, his high school history teacher has got it
- 31:33Speaker 3: lives back there, right, and they have a man cave
- 31:37Speaker 3: CrossFit training that they do. I mean it's like all natural,
- 31:42Speaker 3: like you're taking a log and your bench press on
- 31:44Speaker 3: a log fifty times. Then you're running to the river
- 31:47Speaker 3: with a weighted backpack and back and this they do.
- 31:51Speaker 3: That's the kind of stuff he does. They they they
- 31:54Speaker 3: hollowed out We're right on the banks of the Potomac River.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Tyson and his roommates hollowed out a stream for to
- 32:04Speaker 3: make it a cold bath.
- 32:06Speaker 1: A homemade cold tub, a homemade.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Cold tub on the Potomac River, and they they would
- 32:12Speaker 3: go down there in February. I mean, we're not talking
- 32:16Speaker 3: July where they're pulling off. They're going down there and
- 32:19Speaker 3: really going through it. I mean, just the things, like
- 32:22Speaker 3: the natural things that happen.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Well, even you mentioning that, you know, I'm thinking about
- 32:25Speaker 1: Alabama and LSU's facilities in the amount of millions, of
- 32:29Speaker 1: the fact that it's his high school. His high school
- 32:32Speaker 1: teacher leaves behind the facility and he's I mean, you
- 32:35Speaker 1: can't make the stuff up.
- 32:36Speaker 3: You can't. And his high school teacher played basketball here, right, Okay,
- 32:41Speaker 3: saw the Earth guy just a tremendous person, human being,
- 32:45Speaker 3: And of course he's a good hope for us to
- 32:46Speaker 3: have because when you know, we recruit somebody from the
- 32:49Speaker 3: high school, we're getting inside scoop on them, you know,
- 32:52Speaker 3: like what kind of with their hearts, like with their
- 32:54Speaker 3: who they are inside? And you know, of course he
- 32:58Speaker 3: the guys that we've gotten from Tyson's high school, and
- 33:00Speaker 3: because of Tyson have been tremendous players for us. But like,
- 33:06Speaker 3: here's an other thing, how competitive Tyson is? All Right,
- 33:09Speaker 3: So his junior year, the year he won the Harlan Hill.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Right after every practice in summer camp, all right, mostly
- 33:17Speaker 3: of summer camp. You know, we'd be walking off the field.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Enticon are one of our athlete trainers as a gymnast, right,
- 33:27Speaker 3: and they would have a competition, who on who could
- 33:30Speaker 3: walk on their hands the farthest, and they were doing
- 33:34Speaker 3: fifty to seventy five yards walking on their hands. I
- 33:38Speaker 3: mean literally, I wish I had video of it, you know.
- 33:41Speaker 3: And I'm just sitting there thinking, and I can't tell
- 33:43Speaker 3: the dude stop because he's just competitive. He's not gonna
- 33:48Speaker 3: you know, no, I'm not gonna let her beat me.
- 33:50Speaker 3: And you know, but she's now an athlete trainer in
- 33:53Speaker 3: another school. When we talked about it before the game. So,
- 33:56Speaker 3: but that's who the kid is. I mean he is.
- 33:58Speaker 3: He is a special guy. He's as grounded as grounded
- 34:03Speaker 3: could be. He has an impeccable work ethic. He you know,
- 34:07Speaker 3: not only was he the best player on our football
- 34:09Speaker 3: team for five years, he was the best teammate, the
- 34:13Speaker 3: best teammate. You could have never wanted anything extra. You know,
- 34:18Speaker 3: he threw he threw a milestone touchdown, right and we're
- 34:23Speaker 3: at Millersville University and he goes, he comes up to me,
- 34:27Speaker 3: he goes, and this is his junior year. He goes, coach,
- 34:31Speaker 3: that was like hundred touchdown passed. He goes, can I
- 34:36Speaker 3: have the game ball?
- 34:37Speaker 1: You know, first time, right?
- 34:39Speaker 3: And I was like, yeah, you can have whatever you want, tyson,
- 34:41Speaker 3: but do me a favorite. Just give it to the
- 34:43Speaker 3: manager to give to your dad, because I don't want
- 34:44Speaker 3: to draw a lot of attention to giving game balls
- 34:47Speaker 3: away because they're seventy millonuns apiece.
- 34:49Speaker 1: You know, we need that money.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Man.
- 34:54Speaker 1: That's so good.
- 34:55Speaker 3: And then that night his dad sent me a video
- 34:58Speaker 3: of him giving that game ball to his grandfather who's
- 35:01Speaker 3: passed away. He was really close to him.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Jeez, I'm gonna cry. That's amazing. The on the field exploits,
- 35:08Speaker 1: I mean, the leadership stuff, that's all off the charts. Yeah,
- 35:11Speaker 1: was this guy tearing up the vision two I you know,
- 35:13Speaker 1: obviously we started seeing footage, the grainy footage, and we
- 35:15Speaker 1: don't even know the start of it. You lived it.
- 35:17Speaker 1: What was it like having him as your quarterback? And
- 35:19Speaker 1: what kind of stuff did he do?
- 35:20Speaker 3: Well? This is a story I'd like to tell. His
- 35:24Speaker 3: freshman year as the starter. All Right, we're playing the
- 35:27Speaker 3: last game of the season. We're seven and two, and
- 35:32Speaker 3: we end up losing the game. All right, And you
- 35:34Speaker 3: know we're in a small stadium. You can hear people
- 35:37Speaker 3: heckling you. You can hear people giving you grief. People
- 35:40Speaker 3: are yelling at the quarterback. You know, you know he's
- 35:43Speaker 3: taking a sack. I'm wondering why he didnt get rid of
- 35:45Speaker 3: the ball, Like, what'd you see? Because Coach, that was
- 35:48Speaker 3: on me. We couldn't run the football through this whole time.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Everybody's pointing fingers. But one guy, Tyson Beaging. He is
- 35:57Speaker 3: a team first guy. He'll own everything that happens to
- 36:01Speaker 3: the team and put it on his shoulders, his back.
- 36:04Speaker 3: And I realized that that's the kind of we have
- 36:07Speaker 3: to go and put the best players around them we
- 36:10Speaker 3: possibly can. And that was our goal from there on out.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Make sure he had the receivers that he needed, the
- 36:17Speaker 3: O line that We tried to do everything we could
- 36:19Speaker 3: do to build that team. Every team we've had since
- 36:22Speaker 3: his freshman year around Tyson Baigent and his strengths and
- 36:27Speaker 3: what he could do. And I thought we did a
- 36:30Speaker 3: pretty good job of that. We were able to win
- 36:32Speaker 3: a lot of all games. He broke a lot of records,
- 36:36Speaker 3: and he's done with multiple receivers. The guy has an
- 36:39Speaker 3: uncanny ability to make people around them better. We had
- 36:44Speaker 3: a receiver going from his freshman year had eight catches
- 36:49Speaker 3: to ninety nine catches the next year because he worked
- 36:52Speaker 3: all summer with Tyson Baging and they had a great
- 36:55Speaker 3: connection together. So going it's a ninety catch difference because
- 37:01Speaker 3: Tyson believed in them, and he believed in Tyson and
- 37:04Speaker 3: they were on the same page. I mean, want just
- 37:07Speaker 3: one of many examples he made. He made alignment better,
- 37:11Speaker 3: he made running backs better, he made tight ends better,
- 37:14Speaker 3: wide receivers better, he made our defense better, the whole deal.
- 37:18Speaker 3: And it's all game to him too, Like it's a
- 37:20Speaker 3: competitive everything's a competitive game. We do a blitz pick up, right,
- 37:25Speaker 3: We do like to start practice off once a week
- 37:27Speaker 3: and a blitz pickup. And he just would love to
- 37:30Speaker 3: do the dummy cases.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Get me in there.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Yeah, he went, he put, he would go, I would
- 37:35Speaker 3: stay up, he standing right next to him, go ready,
- 37:38Speaker 3: and then he would look at and go, ah, there
- 37:40Speaker 3: you are, Mike, Mike six, Mike six, and you know,
- 37:44Speaker 3: and but it was a it was a challenge for
- 37:47Speaker 3: him that every challenge he wants that he'll he'll accept.
- 37:51Speaker 1: All right, So we go to the draft process. Senior
- 37:55Speaker 1: Bowl is amazing, he plays well, he's with you know,
- 37:58Speaker 1: he's in front of the Bears staff gets he's there,
- 38:00Speaker 1: all this stuff. But then the draft comes along and
- 38:03Speaker 1: he goes undrafted. Was that a great disappointment? Were you
- 38:05Speaker 1: guys surprised? And I'm sure sure you spoke to thirty
- 38:07Speaker 1: two NFL teams.
- 38:08Speaker 3: You know what, I'll tell you what our tackle who's
- 38:12Speaker 3: on the practice squad with the Steelers, Joey Fisher. Yeah,
- 38:15Speaker 3: and that after that draft happened, I mean immediately after
- 38:19Speaker 3: it ended, I said, if these two, either one of
- 38:22Speaker 3: these two guys don't get drafted, we'll never get in
- 38:24Speaker 3: by drafted. Yeah, and that that's really how I feel.
- 38:27Speaker 3: But I also understand, like when you get to the
- 38:30Speaker 3: later rounds, the sixth and seventh round, sometimes you're better
- 38:33Speaker 3: being a free agent because you get a chance to
- 38:35Speaker 3: pick you and your agent picked the best spot for you.
- 38:39Speaker 3: And that's what happened. You know, I think we're we're awful.
- 38:44Speaker 3: We're fortunate that Tyson didn't get drafted, was able to
- 38:48Speaker 3: sign that free agent deal with the Bears because he
- 38:52Speaker 3: seems to be in the right place at the right time. Obviously,
- 38:55Speaker 3: luketzk the Bears offensive staff knew who he was from
- 38:58Speaker 3: the Senior Bowl, had confidence in him, and you know,
- 39:02Speaker 3: I just think he's in I think he's in a
- 39:04Speaker 3: good spot.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Yeah. And to take it full circle, in a couple
- 39:07Speaker 1: of days, Chris Collinsworth and Mike Turrico are going to
- 39:11Speaker 1: be saying his name and calling it. I mean, is
- 39:12Speaker 1: this not surreal? That that that that a year ago
- 39:15Speaker 1: at this time he was playing with you guys going
- 39:17Speaker 1: up against Bloomsburg, and now he's got you know, Joey
- 39:20Speaker 1: Bosa and Khalil Mack and Derwin James staring down at
- 39:23Speaker 1: him with Tarico and Collinsworth on the call.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Well, like I told you, I got a chance to
- 39:27Speaker 3: watch the first half. You know, we did it as
- 39:30Speaker 3: a team and before we started our team meeting and
- 39:34Speaker 3: on Sunday, And I can tell you when I watched
- 39:37Speaker 3: that game, I kept finding out where Crosby was. I
- 39:40Speaker 3: was like, because I didn't want that dude to get
- 39:41Speaker 3: a free shot on my guy.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Man, I was really impressed with the Bear So I
- 39:46Speaker 3: thought they did a great job. I thought, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 3: they Tyson handled his role the right way. The running
- 39:52Speaker 3: game that they had. Uh, the one catch that I
- 39:55Speaker 3: thought it was DJ Moore had it was a ball
- 39:57Speaker 3: that was kind of sailing on Tys. I thought that
- 40:01Speaker 3: he made a great catch. I was really happy for Chicago.
- 40:05Speaker 3: And of course I'm I'm a Bears fan now, so
- 40:09Speaker 3: I gotta I'm all in with the Bears.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Sorry, Ravens, it it's not your year. Yeah, this is
- 40:14Speaker 1: going to be a Bears fan and I am.
- 40:15Speaker 3: I am a Ravens fan.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I'm sure you are. I'm sure you are. In closing,
- 40:21Speaker 1: talk about your school, your program, and not only what
- 40:24Speaker 1: Tyson has brought as far as the national spotlight goes
- 40:27Speaker 1: with some of the great stuff that you guys are doing.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Because this isn't a flash in the pen. You guys
- 40:30Speaker 1: are winning, franchise, winning program. It happened for years.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Shepherd is a special place. We can really attract a
- 40:36Speaker 3: lot of really good players to come to Shepherd because
- 40:39Speaker 3: of the culture of our program. You know, we battled
- 40:43Speaker 3: the portal and division one offers with both Joey and Tyson,
- 40:48Speaker 3: and you know, I know it's my job to create
- 40:50Speaker 3: a culture where guys don't feel they have to leave.
- 40:53Speaker 3: They only can leave if it's a much better situation
- 40:57Speaker 3: for him. But you know when I want to you know,
- 41:00Speaker 3: we just had homecoming last weekend, and when you get
- 41:03Speaker 3: a chance to look at all the former players that
- 41:05Speaker 3: come back that you've had opportunity to coach, you realize
- 41:08Speaker 3: that we just have a really good spot here where
- 41:12Speaker 3: football is important to our administration. Football is important to
- 41:16Speaker 3: the local area. We get tremendous support, like our environment
- 41:21Speaker 3: for our home football game as the two greatest days
- 41:23Speaker 3: on our campus our graduation in a home football game
- 41:26Speaker 3: and graduations number two. So I mean, it's it's an
- 41:30Speaker 3: exciting day on our campus when we play at home,
- 41:33Speaker 3: and we have a tremendous fan base. We have a
- 41:37Speaker 3: unbelievable access to a lot of really good players within
- 41:41Speaker 3: a two and a half hour raineus of our campus,
- 41:44Speaker 3: And you know, it's fun for me and I think
- 41:46Speaker 3: our coaches to work somewhere and coach the game where
- 41:50Speaker 3: it's important to a lot of people.
- 41:52Speaker 1: You got Bloomsburg this weekend. Give us a little preview
- 41:54Speaker 1: on the season with Peter Schreger. We're all going to
- 41:56Speaker 1: be checking our phones, give us a preview. What have
- 41:58Speaker 1: they got? Who are you and who are we looking at?
- 42:00Speaker 3: Well? You know what right now, bloom is we're going
- 42:03Speaker 3: to be on the road, so it's a tough place
- 42:06Speaker 3: go play. Uh. You know, if you were to look
- 42:09Speaker 3: at the tap, if you look at just stats and
- 42:11Speaker 3: stuff like that, you would think it's going to be
- 42:13Speaker 3: an easy victory for us. It's not. We're gonna have
- 42:16Speaker 3: to play well. We're gonna have to what I'd like
- 42:19Speaker 3: to say, make the ordinary play extraordinary. You know, they
- 42:23Speaker 3: just do the little things right the bank things will
- 42:25Speaker 3: take care of themselves, handle adversity when it comes, because
- 42:28Speaker 3: we're gonna have some type of adversity, and just play
- 42:31Speaker 3: with each other and don't look at the scoreboard, don't
- 42:34Speaker 3: look got just play the game and make the ordinary
- 42:38Speaker 3: play and I think we'll be just fine.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Now I'm gonna tell you something. I'm gonna give you
- 42:42Speaker 1: some advice here. And this is me as a media
- 42:44Speaker 1: guy and a big talking head in a New York
- 42:46Speaker 1: hot shot. You guys finished that game against Bloomsburg. Coach,
- 42:50Speaker 1: I don't know what money you got in the piggy bank.
- 42:52Speaker 1: You gotta fly out to la, you gotta watch your
- 42:55Speaker 1: boy in person Sunday night. Can we get there?
- 42:57Speaker 3: There's no way because we got we got a big
- 42:59Speaker 3: one the next week, and we're gonna be in the
- 43:01Speaker 3: office Sunday morning. But but my last night, my wife goes,
- 43:06Speaker 3: She goes, well, I said, it's Sunday night football. Well, no,
- 43:12Speaker 3: we're going to try and hit one one of our
- 43:13Speaker 3: seasons over. But she was like, we should have a party.
- 43:16Speaker 3: I said, we can't have a party. No, we can't
- 43:20Speaker 3: have a party. And she kind of says, well, I'll
- 43:23Speaker 3: just invite my girlfriend's over. So my wife is going
- 43:25Speaker 3: to probably have a little watch party herself, but everybody
- 43:29Speaker 3: will be excited. You know. The best thing, Tyson's brother, Ezra,
- 43:32Speaker 3: is a cool freshman quarterback in our program. Really yeah,
- 43:36Speaker 3: and he had a great career in Martinsburg as well,
- 43:40Speaker 3: and he's here with us. And I called his dad
- 43:42Speaker 3: about midweek once I realized that Tyson was going to start,
- 43:46Speaker 3: and I said, hey, make sure you take Ezra out there.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yeah, missed the game to go. He went and did both.
- 43:52Speaker 3: No, he played the game, played in the game, actually
- 43:54Speaker 3: got its first college completion on Saturday. Let's agent. Yeah.
- 44:00Speaker 3: And then after the game, went to the airport, flew
- 44:03Speaker 3: and men his parents and family in Chicago and was
- 44:06Speaker 3: there with Tyson and the family and friends.
- 44:10Speaker 1: I love it.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Yeah, they're just an awesome family and you know what,
- 44:15Speaker 3: they're easy people to root for. I promise you that one.
- 44:18Speaker 1: So are you, my friend, Ernie. This was so cool,
- 44:20Speaker 1: Coach Ernie McCook Shepherd University. What an amazing world when
- 44:26Speaker 1: this has been And yet you sound as natural and
- 44:28Speaker 1: as non surprised as it could ever be. It seems like,
- 44:32Speaker 1: not to get too religious with you, but it feels
- 44:33Speaker 1: like this was in the stars and you kind of
- 44:35Speaker 1: saw this happen in a long time ago.
- 44:37Speaker 3: You know, I truly believe in the blessings of life
- 44:40Speaker 3: that we have. And I do a radio show on
- 44:43Speaker 3: Thursday nights, and two weeks ago it was West Virginia
- 44:47Speaker 3: playing Houston and I'm sitting there and of course the
- 44:50Speaker 3: one guy is a West Virginia longe that does the
- 44:53Speaker 3: radio show, and I said, man, there's my favorite West
- 44:56Speaker 3: Virginia coach of all time. And you know that's like
- 45:00Speaker 3: sacriligious there if it's not don Kneeling, you know, looked
- 45:04Speaker 3: at me sideways. I said, yeah, Stana Holderson.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I love that.
- 45:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, but I said he's my favorite because he
- 45:09Speaker 3: didn't offer Tyson baiging coming out of high school.
- 45:11Speaker 1: There you go, that's a great way to do it.
- 45:13Speaker 1: I was like, Dana, he's a good coach. Okay, go on,
- 45:16Speaker 1: it's yeah, that's a great story. Yeah, that's a great story.
- 45:19Speaker 1: You're a follow them dude. This is awesome, Ernie. Thank you,
- 45:22Speaker 1: get back to practice. Loved having you on the season.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Peter Shager, and good luck this weekend against Bloomsburg.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Thank you very much. It was a lot of fun, Ernie.
- 45:32Speaker 1: But Cook, I mean, that's that's interesting. And when he
- 45:35Speaker 1: starts talking about weightlifting logs and building your own cold
- 45:41Speaker 1: tub in twenty twenty one out of the shores of
- 45:43Speaker 1: the Potomac, like, this is what I'm here for.
- 45:45Speaker 2: That was one hundred percent not what I was doing
- 45:47Speaker 2: in the woods when I was in high school.
- 45:49Speaker 3: I can guarantee you that I'm sure.
- 45:50Speaker 1: No. It was actually college, which is even crazy, like
- 45:53Speaker 1: the fact that he's in college and he's still it's
- 45:55Speaker 1: still as like and it's nothing against the Division two program.
- 45:58Speaker 1: It's not Alabama, it's not Ohio State. It's like, go
- 46:01Speaker 1: walk on your hands and challenge the trainer. I want
- 46:05Speaker 1: to make it bigger than he it is, maybe because
- 46:07Speaker 1: these are sophisticated programs and there he won the Heisman
- 46:10Speaker 1: of the Division two, but like it is really, really,
- 46:15Speaker 1: really big, long shot stuff when you're going from Division
- 46:17Speaker 1: two undrafted to starting in the NFL and on Sunday night.
- 46:20Speaker 1: So as much as we saw mister Irrelevant last year,
- 46:23Speaker 1: brock Birdy was a superstar in the state of Arizona
- 46:25Speaker 1: and started Iowa State for four years, this guy's story
- 46:28Speaker 1: is way crazier.
- 46:29Speaker 2: And he won with the Bears. I mean, like, it's
- 46:33Speaker 2: that just here's a UDFA who started a game because
- 46:36Speaker 2: of injury. It's a UDFA who wound up making the
- 46:39Speaker 2: team and then took them to a victory, which I mean,
- 46:43Speaker 2: you know, Josh Allen didn't take his team to a
- 46:45Speaker 2: victory this week, So.
- 46:46Speaker 1: No, you're right, Sky's the limit for him. That was cool.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Ernie McCook I like him. As we are wrapping up
- 46:52Speaker 1: with him, he like it was like, here's my Twitter handle.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, Ernie, let's go, let's take the best.
- 46:57Speaker 1: We got to maximize this moment. Barn They're my official
- 47:01Speaker 1: Division two teams, So Arizona is my official Division one team.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Checking on Arizona. I know they took USC to the
- 47:07Speaker 1: wire then I think they won one against Washington State.
- 47:10Speaker 1: What's Arizona's record? How are we looking with Jed Fish's boys.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Jed's been a great friend of the pod and his
- 47:16Speaker 1: clip went crazy viral and was a great episode if
- 47:18Speaker 1: you go back as a coach at Arizona. What do we got?
- 47:21Speaker 2: Their overall is four and three, they're two goal team.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Who'd they play this past weekend? Or were they on the.
- 47:27Speaker 2: By this past weekend? They played Washington State and they
- 47:33Speaker 2: won forty four to six. They won, they lost, they won,
- 47:37Speaker 2: they won? Yes, I think it was USC.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Was it two weeks ago?
- 47:40Speaker 2: The four? Yeah, that's they didn't do anything this weekend?
- 47:43Speaker 1: They buyed all right? So who do they got this weekend?
- 47:45Speaker 2: Oregon State?
- 47:46Speaker 1: Any good? Click on?
- 47:47Speaker 2: Oregon State? Beavers are six and one. They're the eleventh
- 47:50Speaker 2: ranked team. So Arizona is currently a one score underdog
- 47:55Speaker 2: versus Oregon State.
- 47:56Speaker 1: So here's our viewing. Okay, are you ready for this?
- 48:00Speaker 1: You and I are going to stream Bloomsburg Shepherd in
- 48:04Speaker 1: the early afternoon. We're going to get in on. It're
- 48:06Speaker 1: gonna rot for coach McCook. We're gonna get some Ezra
- 48:08Speaker 1: Bagent fantasy numbers up and going. And then I assume
- 48:12Speaker 1: Oregon State Arizona is one of these late night affairs.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Yeah, we we have plenty of time. The Bloomsburg game
- 48:18Speaker 2: is at noon and uh, Oregon State Arizona is at
- 48:23Speaker 2: ten thirty pm.
- 48:24Speaker 1: So I mean that's it retailgate and we're getting after
- 48:27Speaker 1: it or I'm sure there's other stuff in between, but
- 48:31Speaker 1: the big ones for us, we're gonna book end it
- 48:33Speaker 1: with Bloomsburg versus Shepherd. I'm going with Shepherd. Shepherd big
- 48:37Speaker 1: because coach said, you know, on paper, we're gonna they
- 48:39Speaker 1: look like we're gonna kick their butts. But no, no,
- 48:41Speaker 1: that means you're gonna kick their ass. We're gonna take
- 48:43Speaker 1: Shepard and I got Arizona upsetting Oregon State late at night?
- 48:48Speaker 1: What's it on ESPN or Packed twelve network? What do
- 48:50Speaker 1: we got to say that in network?
- 48:53Speaker 2: Pack twelve pac twelve? Uh?
- 48:55Speaker 1: Did you see the clip that was going viral of
- 48:57Speaker 1: the seedw game that you wudn't c was playing Virginia?
- 49:00Speaker 1: Do you see that or no, So UNC is playing
- 49:02Speaker 1: Virginia on the seed W and you know they do
- 49:06Speaker 1: the inn game promos and only so the announcer, the
- 49:11Speaker 1: play by play guy, very seriously, He's like, all right,
- 49:13Speaker 1: and it's fourteen seven Virginia.
- 49:15Speaker 3: Are you watching the show f Boy Island?
- 49:20Speaker 1: And I think James Bates is the color guy who
- 49:22Speaker 1: I know. And James like, he's like, well, everyone else
- 49:27Speaker 1: is f Boy Island on the CW. You can't make
- 49:31Speaker 1: it up? All right? Time for our Uber Eats segment.
- 49:35Speaker 1: They are our sponsors the season with Peter Schrager is
- 49:39Speaker 1: delivering results presented by Uber Eats. And I'm gonna tell
- 49:42Speaker 1: you who I think delivered results last week, and that
- 49:46Speaker 1: is Lamar Jackson. I think Lamar Jackson had his best
- 49:49Speaker 1: game as a pro this season. He was unbelievable. He
- 49:52Speaker 1: was calm in the pocket and he looked like an
- 49:54Speaker 1: MVP candidate. What the Ravens did to the Lions completely
- 49:57Speaker 1: shifted the narrative and not only the AFC, but the
- 49:59Speaker 1: NFC as well. We were riding a bandwagon and we
- 50:02Speaker 1: were all up on board of what Detroit was doing
- 50:04Speaker 1: that had suddenly come to a halt in maybe a
