- 0:00Speaker 1: Here he is now Craig Way.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Sports Radio. I'm thirteen hundred the Zone. Andrews zim will
- 0:16Speaker 2: hanging out with you this Thursday afternoon, and hopefully you're
- 0:19Speaker 2: doing good out there, staying safe, staying warm, staying dry.
- 0:24Speaker 2: We've already had a couple of people we know deal
- 0:26Speaker 2: with us some car issues. I don't know if that
- 0:28Speaker 2: was because of the precipitation or not, but you know,
- 0:32Speaker 2: look both ways before we cross the street, and you know,
- 0:34Speaker 2: keep it slow, slow down, Austin. Everybody wants to go
- 0:37Speaker 2: everywhere one hundred miles per hour. If the traffic's not
- 0:40Speaker 2: slowing you down, hopefully the rain will. So I'm filling
- 0:43Speaker 2: in today. Craig Way will join the program in the
- 0:45Speaker 2: four o'clock hour four seventeen. You can set your watch
- 0:48Speaker 2: to it. He'll join us to talk Texas women as
- 0:51Speaker 2: they go to the Birmingham region take on the Lady
- 0:54Speaker 2: Bowls on Saturday, and now Saturday is slate for women's basketball,
- 0:59Speaker 2: absolutely packed. If you're not, if you're not a Longhorn fan,
- 1:03Speaker 2: well there's still games for you because number three Notre
- 1:05Speaker 2: Dame and number two TCU tip off at noon on Saturday.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Then one seed at Texas takes on number five seed
- 1:12Speaker 2: to Tennessee at two point thirty, and then at four
- 1:14Speaker 2: thirty Yukon, which is all of a sudden become the
- 1:18Speaker 2: favorite out of that side of the other side of
- 1:21Speaker 2: the bracket, of the Spokane side of the bracket, well,
- 1:23Speaker 2: they're in a two seed. They're taking on three seeded Oklahoma,
- 1:26Speaker 2: who just signed the number one recruit in the country
- 1:29Speaker 2: on a signing day.
- 1:30Speaker 3: So there's a lot of action.
- 1:31Speaker 2: There's a lot of excitement on Saturday for the women's
- 1:34Speaker 2: basketball slate as they go into the sweet sixteen. And
- 1:37Speaker 2: of course we'll bring on Craig on at four seventeen
- 1:40Speaker 2: to talk Texas Longhorns basketball and also a little baseball
- 1:44Speaker 2: action as well as Texas takes on Missouri. Now I
- 1:48Speaker 2: went through all the stats, there's a lot of things
- 1:51Speaker 2: you can, you know, point to when it comes to
- 1:53Speaker 2: Texas baseball. You can look at that Sam Houston or yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 2: Sam Houston State went on Tuesday night and feel pretty
- 1:59Speaker 2: good about how this team is doing. You could also
- 2:02Speaker 2: look at the slate of games that they have played
- 2:04Speaker 2: to this point. You look at last weekend beating LSU
- 2:08Speaker 2: two to two to one series win at home.
- 2:11Speaker 3: But the game.
- 2:12Speaker 2: The number that I care most about coming into this
- 2:17Speaker 2: weekend is oh and six because Missouri is oh to
- 2:21Speaker 2: six in conference plays so far in the SEC. Similarly,
- 2:26Speaker 2: Texas A and M also defeated in conference player, but
- 2:29Speaker 2: oh in six. Look, you can't walk into any SEC
- 2:32Speaker 2: ballpark in this conference and just expect to win. You
- 2:36Speaker 2: don't expect to go into Columbia Missouri and expect to win.
- 2:40Speaker 2: You're gonna have to play your best ball. You're gonna
- 2:42Speaker 2: have to have your pitching staff tight, You're gonna be able,
- 2:46Speaker 2: You're gonna have to come in there with the bats
- 2:47Speaker 2: still hot if you want to beat Missouri. It is
- 2:49Speaker 2: still an SEC ball club. But I feel pretty confident,
- 2:53Speaker 2: pretty comfortable saying that this weekend's three game set is
- 2:58Speaker 2: probably gonna go the Long Horns way. I think that's
- 3:02Speaker 2: a fair estimate. I feel like that's a fair take
- 3:05Speaker 2: going into this weekend. And then you start April with
- 3:08Speaker 2: Texas State again not a school that's gonna roll over.
- 3:11Speaker 2: You look at what happened to the UTSA a week ago.
- 3:14Speaker 2: That was a good game. The UTSA stats a seventeen
- 3:18Speaker 2: game win streak. Texas State probably not at the same
- 3:21Speaker 2: level as UTSA right now, But you know, you still
- 3:24Speaker 2: feel pretty confident against Texas State. But then the conference
- 3:27Speaker 2: is already kind of separating itself between the haves and
- 3:29Speaker 2: the have nots. Georgia in Austin April fourth, that series
- 3:36Speaker 2: is at the same level or close to it, at
- 3:39Speaker 2: least with that LSU series. So Texas Baseball goes to Missouri.
- 3:43Speaker 2: That game will be fun. Craig Why will join us
- 3:45Speaker 2: at four to seventeen to talk all things Longhorns. But
- 3:48Speaker 2: coming up in the next segment, Kyle Glasser from the
- 3:51Speaker 2: MLB Network. Because it is opening day, that is right,
- 3:55Speaker 2: is opening day for Major League Baseball. You feel pretty
- 3:59Speaker 2: good for a lot of teams, you feel pretty bad
- 4:03Speaker 2: for some others. And we'll start with the teams that
- 4:05Speaker 2: you feel good about. The Dodgers have opened up as
- 4:09Speaker 2: the biggest World Series favorite since the two Yankees. Now,
- 4:13Speaker 2: people who keep track of baseball know about those Yankees
- 4:17Speaker 2: in the early two thousands, how they consistently were winning
- 4:20Speaker 2: one hundred games and the Jeter and okay, compare that
- 4:25Speaker 2: now to what is happening in LA There's no Jeter,
- 4:29Speaker 2: there's a sho Hao Tani and as big as you
- 4:32Speaker 2: thought that Derek Jeter was in baseball in the early
- 4:34Speaker 2: two thousands. I would argue that sho Hao Tani is
- 4:37Speaker 2: bigger not only in America right now, but also internationally.
- 4:42Speaker 2: This is the biggest star on the planet when it
- 4:45Speaker 2: comes to balls and bats, and that's a reason why
- 4:49Speaker 2: the Dodgers are opening up as the largest favorite since
- 4:52Speaker 2: the Two Yankees. In fact, they're a larger favorite. They're
- 4:54Speaker 2: plus two seventy five right now coming into Week one
- 4:58Speaker 2: of the Major League Baseball season. Two Yankees open the
- 5:01Speaker 2: season plus two hundred. The Dodgers win total this year
- 5:05Speaker 2: the over unders set at one hundred and five, which
- 5:07Speaker 2: is twelve games higher than any other team in baseball,
- 5:12Speaker 2: and it's also almost fifty games higher than the worst
- 5:16Speaker 2: team in baseball, as projected by the win totals of
- 5:19Speaker 2: the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox have a historically
- 5:23Speaker 2: low win total. The oddsmakers have the White Sox pack
- 5:28Speaker 2: as the worst team over the past thirty five seasons.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It's the lowest win total set since ESPN has been
- 5:37Speaker 2: keeping track of those numbers. It's twelve and a half
- 5:41Speaker 2: more wins than the White Sox had last season, but
- 5:44Speaker 2: last season. They broke almost every conceivable record to be
- 5:48Speaker 2: a bad team. Like you go through the angles of
- 5:53Speaker 2: history and you look at the worst teams in baseball,
- 5:56Speaker 2: and it's rare for your ball club to be in
- 6:00Speaker 2: the same category as the Cleveland freaking Spiders. Before we
- 6:05Speaker 2: turn the calendar over to nineteen hundred, the Cleveland Spiders
- 6:09Speaker 2: were losing one hundred games year after year after year. Well,
- 6:14Speaker 2: Chicago White Sox, congratulations, you're in that ball club to
- 6:17Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty one loss season last year. They're
- 6:23Speaker 2: projected six fewer wins than the second fewest, the Colorado Rockies.
- 6:29Speaker 2: So we'll talk to what Kyle glass a coming up
- 6:31Speaker 2: in the next segment. He'll talk to us. Probably we'll
- 6:34Speaker 2: talk not probably, we will talk about the Astros and
- 6:37Speaker 2: the Texas Rangers and the American League West. That is
- 6:41Speaker 2: absolutely wide open. It's it's open for whoever wants to
- 6:45Speaker 2: kind of put resources and put money towards it. You
- 6:50Speaker 2: think to yourself, is it the end of the Astros
- 6:54Speaker 2: dynasty or is it the beginning of something new? Could
- 6:58Speaker 2: you see a team like the Texas Rangers, who won
- 7:00Speaker 2: the World Series two years ago, stepping to the plate
- 7:03Speaker 2: and trying to put something in play and make something happen.
- 7:05Speaker 2: In this twenty twenty five season, the American League has
- 7:09Speaker 2: been called the junior varsity League to the National League
- 7:12Speaker 2: at this point, and because of the injuries that the
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yankees have suffered early with Garrett Cole blowing out his elbow,
- 7:19Speaker 2: John Carlos stan blowing out both of his elbows, the
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yankees no longer seem to be a major threat in
- 7:26Speaker 2: the American League, or at least not a major threat
- 7:28Speaker 2: to win the World Series. It seems that everybody has
- 7:31Speaker 2: just pegged the La Dodgers as the team in baseball,
- 7:36Speaker 2: which probably is fair. The amount of deferred money, the
- 7:38Speaker 2: amount of big names stars they have, it probably is
- 7:41Speaker 2: fair to say the Dodgers are the favorite in baseball
- 7:44Speaker 2: this season. But with no Yankees, this opens up the
- 7:47Speaker 2: club the doors for a lot of other teams in
- 7:50Speaker 2: the American League, and it will decide. It will depend
- 7:53Speaker 2: on if the Astros and Rangers decide to spend a
- 7:56Speaker 2: little bit of money maybe at the trade deadline, and
- 7:59Speaker 2: what they're both their younger pitching staffs look like. But
- 8:02Speaker 2: one of the reasons that people aren't as high on
- 8:04Speaker 2: the Astros this season as last is because of the
- 8:07Speaker 2: amount of talent that they've shed, and part of this
- 8:10Speaker 2: is because of agents and super agents who have forced
- 8:14Speaker 2: guys to go places they probably don't want to go.
- 8:17Speaker 2: One of those guys that we've hypothesized that never wanted
- 8:21Speaker 2: to leave the ball club that he started with, who
- 8:23Speaker 2: played a lot of baseball in the SEC is Alex Bregman.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Regman.
- 8:28Speaker 2: The deal was on the table, is he gonna get done?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Is it not gonna get done?
- 8:31Speaker 2: At the eleventh hour he signs a deal with the
- 8:34Speaker 2: Boston Red Sox, which I think hurt a lot of
- 8:38Speaker 2: Astros fans, at least in my life. I know there's
- 8:40Speaker 2: a lot of Astros fans who are very upset with
- 8:43Speaker 2: the fact they could not get a deal done to
- 8:45Speaker 2: keep Regman in Houston. And this is just another guy
- 8:48Speaker 2: who when he goes into the Hall of Fame, his
- 8:50Speaker 2: name will be next to a bunch of different teams
- 8:53Speaker 2: instead of one team. There's a lot to be said
- 8:56Speaker 2: for when you get to Cooperstown, you have one hat,
- 8:59Speaker 2: you have one team on your plaque. Well, Bragman won't
- 9:02Speaker 2: have that. He's gonna have the Boston Red Sox on
- 9:05Speaker 2: his plaque. As well, and it made things a little tension.
- 9:10Speaker 2: There's a lot of tension because of his teammate, Raphael Devers,
- 9:14Speaker 2: who was supposed to be the starting third basement for
- 9:17Speaker 2: the twenty twenty five season for the Red Sox, who
- 9:19Speaker 2: are trying to make a push. They have a good
- 9:21Speaker 2: pharm system of good young arms. They're trying to make
- 9:24Speaker 2: a push to be an impactful team in the American League. Well,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you get a guy like Bregman, no matter what, you
- 9:29Speaker 2: want a bat like that in your lineup. But then
- 9:32Speaker 2: it turns into where he's gonna play. Rafael Devers, who's
- 9:35Speaker 2: statistically speaking, is not a very good third baseman. He's
- 9:40Speaker 2: a good bat, he's a good clubhouse guy. He's a
- 9:43Speaker 2: guy that the fans in Boston like, but statistically he's
- 9:47Speaker 2: not a great defensive third baseman and Alex Bregman is.
- 9:52Speaker 2: So we figured it out yesterday. We figured out where
- 9:56Speaker 2: he's going to end up playing, and which is Alex
- 9:59Speaker 2: Bragman will be the every day third baseman and Ralphie
- 10:02Speaker 2: Al Devers will become the primary designated hitter. Now, we
- 10:06Speaker 2: go back all the way before this was announced. We
- 10:11Speaker 2: go back a couple months ago when Devers was saying
- 10:14Speaker 2: that he is the third baseman until something officially gets
- 10:18Speaker 2: done with Bregman, and that he didn't want to change positions, which, okay,
- 10:24Speaker 2: if my boss came to me and said, hey, we're
- 10:26Speaker 2: going to move you to a different daytime slot, I
- 10:28Speaker 2: would have to begrudgingly agree. But with Devers, he the
- 10:32Speaker 2: entire time kind of had his heels in the dirt,
- 10:34Speaker 2: didn't want to move, didn't love that a lot of
- 10:36Speaker 2: this was going on in the sphere of public, the
- 10:40Speaker 2: public sphere, instead of doing it behind closed doors and
- 10:42Speaker 2: dugout in the clubhouse. So he turns into the designated hitter.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Now Bregman, who's a Gold Glover at third base, will
- 10:49Speaker 2: play that position. And if I'm any team in the
- 10:51Speaker 2: American League or any team in baseball and Devers is
- 10:55Speaker 2: hitting a pretty good number by I don't know, we'll
- 10:58Speaker 2: call it near the debt line. Will say late early
- 11:02Speaker 2: early June, late Jul or early July that time period.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I'm making a move. I'm making a move. I'm trying
- 11:10Speaker 2: to put some ship chips in the middle of the
- 11:13Speaker 2: table and go get Raphael Devers.
- 11:16Speaker 3: And if the.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Rangers are in that conversation, or the Ashers are in
- 11:20Speaker 2: that conversation that could be the thing that pushes them
- 11:22Speaker 2: over the hump in the American League West.
- 11:24Speaker 4: All right.
- 11:26Speaker 2: MLB's Kyle Glasser joins us next, and then later in
- 11:29Speaker 2: the hour we also have Inconceivable All coming up next
- 11:32Speaker 2: to the Craigway Show. Szim will hanging out with you
- 11:34Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone, Sports Radio AM
- 11:38Speaker 2: thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zimmell hanging out with you
- 11:41Speaker 2: this Thursday after noon. Texas Softball thirty two and two
- 11:46Speaker 2: on the season, five and one overall in conference and
- 11:50Speaker 2: on a four game winning streak. Now they have a
- 11:53Speaker 2: series this coming weekend against number eighteen Mississippi State in Starkville.
- 11:58Speaker 2: It's gonna be a league matchup. You're not gonna want
- 12:02Speaker 2: to take your eyes off of that. The Texas softball
- 12:04Speaker 2: team absolutely killing it as of late, continue to roll.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Through conference play.
- 12:09Speaker 2: One conference loss so far, and that was that game
- 12:12Speaker 2: on Sunday in Gainesville about what two weeks ago. We're
- 12:16Speaker 2: waiting for Kyle Glasser from the MLB Network to join
- 12:19Speaker 2: us on the Craigway Show. He'll join us at Taka
- 12:22Speaker 2: Texas Rangers and Astros as both teams getting ready to
- 12:27Speaker 2: work into Major League Baseball this season. It's Opening Day
- 12:31Speaker 2: in baseball and we're in the bottom of the first
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yankees and Brewers started our day. Now, you gotta remember
- 12:38Speaker 2: this is the domestic day of opening Day, as the
- 12:41Speaker 2: Dodgers and Cubs both went to Tokyo earlier to get
- 12:47Speaker 2: things started. So to get the season started, I should say, so, yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 2: so we right now, we've got things. We've got things
- 12:57Speaker 2: going on. The Cubs they start their domestics season in
- 13:00Speaker 2: tonight nine pm, first pitch against Era Zona as well,
- 13:05Speaker 2: but other games of course.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Uh.
- 13:07Speaker 2: In the conversation we were talking Ralphel Devers and Alex
- 13:13Speaker 2: Bragman earlier, Red Sox and Rangers they start their season
- 13:17Speaker 2: in Globe Life in Arlington tonight as well.
- 13:21Speaker 3: So things things that keep an eye on, of course.
- 13:24Speaker 2: And like we were talking, we've said that the Yankees
- 13:28Speaker 2: weren't the team I don't think anymore in the American
- 13:30Speaker 2: League to be competing this is. This is a team
- 13:36Speaker 2: that is dealing with a lot of arm injuries and
- 13:40Speaker 2: and and every everything else obviously, So we'll.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Take a.
- 13:50Speaker 2: We're gonna give you a little bit of audio here
- 13:53Speaker 2: from Tom Izzo as he had a big break blow
- 13:56Speaker 2: up yesterday during talking about the train Reportal.
- 14:01Speaker 4: You know, I'm gonna worry today about the guys I
- 14:04Speaker 4: got in this program that have done an incredible job
- 14:08Speaker 4: this year, and that's it. And if that costs me later,
- 14:14Speaker 4: so be it. But Tom Iso isn't cheating the people
- 14:17Speaker 4: that he has that have been loyal to him for
- 14:21Speaker 4: this chaos that is going on out there. Cool, you
- 14:25Speaker 4: got enough? No, no, because you don't understand. When I
- 14:34Speaker 4: came back Sunday night, that was it. There was nothing
- 14:38Speaker 4: on my mind. But given these guys a chance to
- 14:41Speaker 4: win one more game, get to an litiate and one
- 14:43Speaker 4: more game and have a memory that will last their
- 14:46Speaker 4: entire life, their kid's life, and their grandkid's life.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone ar. Now we
- 14:52Speaker 2: have Kyle Glasser on the line from the Major League
- 14:56Speaker 2: Baseball Network formerly of Baseball America. Kyle, that's how you
- 14:59Speaker 2: and I met with is that when you were at
- 15:00Speaker 2: Baseball America. I don't know if you remember that.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Yeah. Absolutely, It's good to talk to you again.
- 15:05Speaker 2: All right, So let's talk Texas baseball. Let's talk Rangers
- 15:08Speaker 2: and Astros, And we'll start with the Astros. They couldn't
- 15:11Speaker 2: get a deal done with Bregman this year and the
- 15:14Speaker 2: American League West feels wide open. What do they need
- 15:17Speaker 2: to do this year?
- 15:19Speaker 5: They really need to get their starting pitchers healthy. When
- 15:22Speaker 5: everyone's healthy, you could go Bramber, Valdez, Hunter Brown, Luis Garcia,
- 15:26Speaker 5: Christian Xavier, Lance McCullers, and that's one of the best
- 15:29Speaker 5: rotations in the American League. The problem is, Javier, Garcia
- 15:32Speaker 5: mccullars have all had health injuries, so that's the main thing.
- 15:36Speaker 5: And they also need to make sure that Ystak Cretis
- 15:38Speaker 5: and Christian Walker, their two big additions, are able to
- 15:41Speaker 5: give them as much offensive reduction as possible. You feel
- 15:44Speaker 5: good about what Hose al Tuba is going to give you. You
- 15:46Speaker 5: feel good about what your Don Albatz is going to
- 15:48Speaker 5: give you. But in order to make up for the
- 15:50Speaker 5: loss of Tucker and Bragman, they're really going to need
- 15:52Speaker 5: Peretis and Walker to be at their best.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So you still feel good about ALTV even as he
- 15:57Speaker 2: gets up in age, I.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Feel him heading. Look, this is one of the best
- 16:01Speaker 5: hitters of our generation. I think he has shown he
- 16:04Speaker 5: can continue to make contact and hit for power and
- 16:07Speaker 5: do some good things offensively, no matter his age. Obviously
- 16:10Speaker 5: it's a move to left field. It will see how
- 16:13Speaker 5: it goes. There's probably gonna be some ugly moments there.
- 16:15Speaker 5: There might also be some decent moments. We'll see how
- 16:18Speaker 5: it shakes out. But I think at the very least
- 16:20Speaker 5: he should continue to hit. I'm never going to doubt
- 16:22Speaker 5: Jose Altuve at the batter Sox.
- 16:25Speaker 3: No, And that's a fair point.
- 16:26Speaker 2: You talked about him moving to left field too, which
- 16:28Speaker 2: I thought came as a little bit of surprise when
- 16:30Speaker 2: it was announced. But as time has gone on, I've
- 16:33Speaker 2: kind of understand a little bit more, Kyle, right.
- 16:36Speaker 5: I mean, it's certainly not every day you see a
- 16:38Speaker 5: guy in their upper thirties move from the infield to
- 16:41Speaker 5: the outfield where they're going to be asked to run
- 16:43Speaker 5: around more I should say mid thirties typically for the
- 16:46Speaker 5: way around outfielder's move to the infield where they don't
- 16:49Speaker 5: have to, you know, cover so much ground. Look, we'll
- 16:52Speaker 5: see how it goes. I'm willing to be open minded,
- 16:56Speaker 5: and you know, we'll just have to wait and see.
- 16:58Speaker 2: All right, let's talk some rain, because the Rangers won
- 17:01Speaker 2: the World Series two years ago, but now it feels
- 17:04Speaker 2: like two decades ago. It feels like so much has
- 17:06Speaker 2: changed for the Rangers since they won that title.
- 17:11Speaker 5: I actually think that they will win the American League
- 17:13Speaker 5: this year. I think they are the team to be
- 17:15Speaker 5: just because you look at the starting rotation. You get
- 17:18Speaker 5: Jacob degromdback. I think Kumar Rocker is going to be
- 17:20Speaker 5: a big, big boost for them, maybe Jack Leder as well.
- 17:23Speaker 5: And look, we see it pretty often teams win a
- 17:25Speaker 5: World Series and the following year after that deep run
- 17:29Speaker 5: into October, they have some injuries, They're a little fatigued.
- 17:31Speaker 5: It just takes a little bit out of them. I
- 17:33Speaker 5: think the Rangers are going to come back refresh this year.
- 17:35Speaker 5: I think one through nine this is a really really good, deep,
- 17:38Speaker 5: dangerous lineup. They have a really good rotation. I think
- 17:42Speaker 5: all the pieces are in place, especially in a wide
- 17:45Speaker 5: open American League where there really is no great team.
- 17:48Speaker 2: So I was saying that in the beginning of Kyle
- 17:50Speaker 2: that there isn't some sort of domineering team, especially with
- 17:53Speaker 2: the injuries the Yankees have suffered. Do you see that too,
- 17:56Speaker 2: that it's just like the National League Junior League almost
- 17:59Speaker 2: in the American League.
- 18:01Speaker 5: Absolutely. I believe the four best teams in baseball all
- 18:04Speaker 5: reside in the National League. By good margins. That's the Dodgers, Phillies, Graves,
- 18:07Speaker 5: and Diamondbacks. And I think six of the seven best
- 18:10Speaker 5: teams in baseball are all in the NL. The NL
- 18:12Speaker 5: is the vastest secure league in terms of position player quality,
- 18:16Speaker 5: pop line, pitcher quality, health quality, overall team quality. Yeah,
- 18:20Speaker 5: this is this is cyclical. It's not meaningful of anything,
- 18:24Speaker 5: you know, beyond just this is how it is this year.
- 18:26Speaker 5: And I do think that it will be a surprise
- 18:29Speaker 5: if an American League team is the champion fan of
- 18:31Speaker 5: the year. The NL is just so so so much
- 18:33Speaker 5: stronger really across the board.
- 18:35Speaker 2: And that's what I was going to ask, because in
- 18:36Speaker 2: basketball we can look at the you know, the Eastern
- 18:39Speaker 2: Conference of the Western Conference, and we know the Western
- 18:41Speaker 2: Conference has better players and better general managers. Is it
- 18:44Speaker 2: the same in baseball now that nationally just has got
- 18:46Speaker 2: a corner on like great gms.
- 18:48Speaker 3: What happened here?
- 18:50Speaker 5: No, it's just cyclical. I mean you have free agents
- 18:52Speaker 5: signing certain places, you have certain trades that get made,
- 18:55Speaker 5: and again a lot of us just have to do
- 18:57Speaker 5: with player movement. There's still a lot of very very good,
- 19:00Speaker 5: smart executive in the American League. It's just again, you know,
- 19:04Speaker 5: five years ago we had this conversation. It's the opposite
- 19:07Speaker 5: that the American League is sacked. So again it really
- 19:09Speaker 5: is just sifnical.
- 19:10Speaker 3: All Right.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Kyle Glasser from Baseball Network talking to us this afternoon
- 19:14Speaker 2: on the Craig Waves Show. Andrewsim was sitting in for Craig. Kyle,
- 19:17Speaker 2: Let's talk baseball. Let's talk Dodgers now, because that is
- 19:20Speaker 2: obviously the story of the season right now. I would
- 19:24Speaker 2: said earlier they're a pick to be the favorite, the
- 19:26Speaker 2: heavy favorite to win the National League. Is there any
- 19:29Speaker 2: world where they're not the World Series champion?
- 19:32Speaker 5: Sure?
- 19:33Speaker 3: So, look, the.
- 19:33Speaker 5: Dodgers are absolutely stacked. You take the defending World Series champion,
- 19:37Speaker 5: they bring everyone back, and you add Blake Snow, Roki Sasaki,
- 19:41Speaker 5: Michael Conford. I mean, this is just an absolute stacked team.
- 19:44Speaker 5: But look, the Phillies are a great, great team as well.
- 19:47Speaker 5: He'll get that rotation of Wheeler, Nolo, Blizardo, Sanchez, Suarez Walker,
- 19:51Speaker 5: they go six deep of stunts as well as the
- 19:54Speaker 5: lineup that is as dangerous as anyone. And the Braves
- 19:56Speaker 5: again with a Kodia coming back healthy, especially when Sean
- 19:59Speaker 5: Murphy comes back healthy, the Braves are a great team
- 20:02Speaker 5: as well. I think that the Dodgers are certainly the favorite,
- 20:05Speaker 5: but if the Braves or Phillies were to beat them
- 20:07Speaker 5: in a series, you wouldn't say, oh my god, that's
- 20:09Speaker 5: a huge shocker that no one saw coming. These are
- 20:12Speaker 5: really good teams that you get them in a five
- 20:13Speaker 5: or seven game series, they absolutely have a very, very
- 20:16Speaker 5: legitimate chance to beat the Dodgers.
- 20:18Speaker 2: So that's a good segue into the Braves and Padres game.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And you're at that game covering in San Diego, right, Kyle.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Yes, I am. I'm currently in the Pecco Park press
- 20:27Speaker 5: back of the Peco Park press box as we speak.
- 20:29Speaker 2: So what do we expect to see from this one?
- 20:31Speaker 2: Between a team and the Braves that we like in
- 20:33Speaker 2: the National League and a team in the Padres that
- 20:35Speaker 2: a couple of years ago we thought would be World
- 20:37Speaker 2: Series champion.
- 20:40Speaker 5: I mean, I would say last year, if the Padres
- 20:42Speaker 5: get past the Dodgers the LDS, they would have been
- 20:44Speaker 5: the World Sings champion. Whoever won that series was going
- 20:46Speaker 5: to win the World Series. They were just so much
- 20:48Speaker 5: better those two teams than everyone else left in the
- 20:50Speaker 5: playoff field. So look what the Padres are looking to see.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Are their stars going to be playing like stars. This
- 20:56Speaker 5: is a team that lost a lot of key players
- 20:58Speaker 5: in free agency. It's really going to be about Machado
- 21:01Speaker 5: and Tatiz and a Rise and Bogarts and Merrill all
- 21:04Speaker 5: performing to the best of their abilities, and they need
- 21:05Speaker 5: to come up hot. They have a very difficult to
- 21:07Speaker 5: really season schedule, and on the brave side, I think
- 21:10Speaker 5: you're just looking for their starting pitchers to stay healthy,
- 21:13Speaker 5: and you know, seeing how some of their guys are
- 21:15Speaker 5: coming back again, Ronald the Counia coming off as second
- 21:18Speaker 5: acl to injury. You want to see how he's moving
- 21:21Speaker 5: and just how he's able to perform overall.
- 21:23Speaker 2: So, finally, Kyle any Bold predictions for the season for baseball.
- 21:28Speaker 5: The San Francisco Giants will be the sleeper team that
- 21:30Speaker 5: surprises everyone. This is a really really underrated team. A
- 21:33Speaker 5: lot of people picking the Reds and they're good, but
- 21:36Speaker 5: the Giants have a really nice mix of veteran talent
- 21:38Speaker 5: and young talent that have a great manager in Bob Melbourne.
- 21:40Speaker 5: They have the right front office, you know, mindset, style
- 21:43Speaker 5: of play, personalities. Now with Buster Posey, I think the
- 21:46Speaker 5: Giants are going to surprise some people and beat some
- 21:48Speaker 5: teams people wouldn't expect them to beat.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Kyle Last from Baseball Networking. Follow
- 21:53Speaker 2: him on x at Kyle A.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Glasster.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Kyle, thanks so much, man anytime or sports Radio coming
- 22:01Speaker 2: your way in a second on the Zone as we
- 22:03Speaker 2: get you ready for inconceivable? Is it inconceivable for the
- 22:07Speaker 2: Giants to make a run at the Nlpellett Pennant. We'll
- 22:10Speaker 2: talk about it next Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Is it inconceivable to be defeated in sec play? Talk
- 22:19Speaker 2: to the Missouri Tigers. They're zero to six right now.
- 22:22Speaker 2: We'll talk about them a little bit later. As well
- 22:25Speaker 2: as the transfer portal opening up in the middle of
- 22:28Speaker 2: sweet sixteen causing guys like Tom Izzo old dogs having
- 22:33Speaker 2: to learn new tricks and they're not happy about it.
- 22:35Speaker 2: But let's talk inconceivable. Here's one for you. It wasn't
- 22:38Speaker 2: inconceivable for me to live in North Dakota for what
- 22:42Speaker 2: was it three years? And when I saw this story,
- 22:46Speaker 2: I knew exactly where it was going to be so
- 22:50Speaker 2: the Anulin Municipal Library, which is on the eastern side
- 22:54Speaker 2: of the state. It's about two hours thishear from where
- 22:57Speaker 2: I was when I was living up there. They out
- 23:00Speaker 2: on social media that a book arrived in a male
- 23:02Speaker 2: media package with no return address. And the reason it's
- 23:08Speaker 2: even a story, even though we care about it, is
- 23:10Speaker 2: because it's a copy of Rebecca by Dafaine Dumar. It
- 23:16Speaker 2: was returned anominously. But the deal is it's fifty one
- 23:20Speaker 2: years past its due date. Yes, librarian, you found it,
- 23:24Speaker 2: determined it checked out in the night in nineteen seventy
- 23:28Speaker 2: three in October. Quote the exact days and numbers it
- 23:32Speaker 2: would be overdue is eighteen thousand, seven hundred and eighty
- 23:37Speaker 2: three days. If you charge ten cents a day, that
- 23:41Speaker 2: equals out to about eighteen hundred dollars. You can buy
- 23:46Speaker 2: a lot of copies of Rebecca for eighteen hundred dollars now,
- 23:50Speaker 2: the librarian wrote, the library board voted to do away
- 23:53Speaker 2: with late fees just last month, so the return didn't
- 23:55Speaker 2: require any payment. I wonder though, if the person who
- 23:59Speaker 2: had had this book on their shelf probably found out
- 24:02Speaker 2: that it was overdue a while ago, I imagine, and
- 24:06Speaker 2: was just kind of waiting to see, you know, hey,
- 24:09Speaker 2: are they ever gonna charge me for this?
- 24:11Speaker 3: Are they Are they gonna keep the ten cents? Like?
- 24:15Speaker 2: Am I gonna have to pay a fine for turning
- 24:17Speaker 2: this book in fifty one years late? Once I saw
- 24:22Speaker 2: that come out that they I'm not gonna have to well,
- 24:24Speaker 2: you know what, I'll throw a I'll put it back
- 24:27Speaker 2: in the collection box. The anonymous person was nice enough
- 24:30Speaker 2: to throw on a twenty dollars bill, however, which is
- 24:32Speaker 2: super nice, not exactly eighteen hundred dollars that it would
- 24:35Speaker 2: cost you if you turn the book in late with
- 24:37Speaker 2: a ten cent fee eighteen thousand days. My question then
- 24:42Speaker 2: turns into how many days did it take you to
- 24:44Speaker 2: read the book originally? And did you actually read it?
- 24:48Speaker 2: When I was a kid, I was checking out books
- 24:49Speaker 2: some library, and I'll be honest with you, my parents
- 24:51Speaker 2: paid for some late fees for books that I didn't
- 24:55Speaker 2: even read, which you gotta feel bad about. And as
- 24:58Speaker 2: a parent, that's kind of the h that's kind of
- 25:00Speaker 2: the lot that you're delivered here, all right. If you
- 25:03Speaker 2: saw the story earlier this week from Harris County about
- 25:07Speaker 2: the amount of bulls and steer running down the highway. Well,
- 25:13Speaker 2: you'll be happy to know that they found some of them.
- 25:17Speaker 2: The owner of the rodeo cattle escaped onto a Texas highway.
- 25:20Speaker 2: They discovered the animals have finally arrived home, but there
- 25:24Speaker 2: is one steer missing. According to Harris County Sheriff's office,
- 25:29Speaker 2: a trailer latch came undone on Monday. Multiple steer well,
- 25:33Speaker 2: they ran loose on Interstate thirty five North near the
- 25:36Speaker 2: Montgomery County line. Harris sheriff say the bovine were secured
- 25:40Speaker 2: a few hours later. And I will say this that
- 25:43Speaker 2: this seems to be happening more and more. It seems
- 25:45Speaker 2: that we're talking on inconceivable more and more about loose steer,
- 25:49Speaker 2: loose bulvine. It's Texas. You gotta have at least one
- 25:54Speaker 2: rope rod staff. I don't know if there is a
- 25:56Speaker 2: budgetary issue. I don't know if there's a you know,
- 26:00Speaker 2: law that we can get fixed. Greg Abbott, you know,
- 26:02Speaker 2: work on it here. Every police department needs to have
- 26:05Speaker 2: at least one certified cowboy on staff, just in case,
- 26:10Speaker 2: just in case that it is a running of the bulls. Now,
- 26:15Speaker 2: they made fifty four the of the steer made it
- 26:20Speaker 2: back to the original ranch. The fifty fifth is still roaming.
- 26:25Speaker 2: The whereabouts are currently unknown. So do we have a
- 26:29Speaker 2: wrangler on our hands? Is there a world where you know,
- 26:32Speaker 2: maybe somebody coaxed this steer into the back of the
- 26:36Speaker 2: air trailer.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I need to know more. I want to know more.
- 26:39Speaker 2: We'll get you updates as we learn more, obviously, but
- 26:42Speaker 2: this is truly an insane story. And if you saw
- 26:46Speaker 2: the video of the running of the bulls on Interstate
- 26:52Speaker 2: thirty five in Houston, then you also will understand that
- 26:56Speaker 2: this is a This is a big story, all right.
- 26:59Speaker 2: So you've heard of March Madness before, and hopefully your
- 27:03Speaker 2: brackets are not completely shredded. I still think I'm doing
- 27:07Speaker 2: relatively well. People aren't happy with how chalk this tournament
- 27:11Speaker 2: has been this year, but March Naptness is occurring as well.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I don't know if you've heard about this. An international
- 27:19Speaker 2: Animal will Fare group announce the start of a March
- 27:23Speaker 2: Madness style bracket tracking bear sanctuaries across Europe with Hibernation
- 27:29Speaker 2: four Pause, which operates an animal sanctuary across the world,
- 27:32Speaker 2: kicked off the Animal Tournament with the bracket of twenty
- 27:35Speaker 2: three European brown bears living in six sanctuaries across Europe.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Now I look at this and I say, hold on
- 27:42Speaker 2: a second, there's twenty three European brown bears. Does somebody
- 27:48Speaker 2: get a automatic buy? Is there a number one seed
- 27:51Speaker 2: that doesn't have to compete? What they did was they
- 27:55Speaker 2: did in one side of the bracket they had three
- 27:58Speaker 2: and every other one has four. Okay, so the sleepiest
- 28:04Speaker 2: bear wins the four pause spokes been said, the bear
- 28:09Speaker 2: that remains sleeping the longest is crowned the winner for
- 28:13Speaker 2: the year. Now, the spokesperson clear the French said that
- 28:17Speaker 2: a bear is kicked out of the bracket after waking
- 28:19Speaker 2: up from hibernation and remains active for at least five days.
- 28:22Speaker 2: When an animal, especially beer hybrid dates, they may wake up.
- 28:25Speaker 2: From time to time. They wake up, they go out
- 28:27Speaker 2: of their den, they walk around, maybe they grab a snack,
- 28:29Speaker 2: and then they go back to bed. I will say this,
- 28:31Speaker 2: when I wake up from my nap, I tend to
- 28:34Speaker 2: wake up, you know, go to the kitchen, make myself
- 28:36Speaker 2: a sandwich, and then I'm right back sleeping. As I'm
- 28:39Speaker 2: watching the Masters coming up here, watching some golf on
- 28:41Speaker 2: the TV on a Saturday, the bears were all rescued
- 28:44Speaker 2: from captivity or.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Unable to return to the wild. Quote.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Some bears prefer their own den, while other bears, well,
- 28:51Speaker 2: they are provided to dead. They thank you, and then
- 28:54Speaker 2: they say good night. The French says that March Napness
- 28:57Speaker 2: is aimed at teaching the public about two substitute subject,
- 29:00Speaker 2: bear conservation, and of course we all could use some
- 29:03Speaker 2: more of this, the importance of rest. I think you
- 29:07Speaker 2: could really bring back the movement that sleeping is self
- 29:10Speaker 2: care and there's no harm in taking a little nap
- 29:13Speaker 2: when you need it.
- 29:14Speaker 3: You hear that. I hope my program doctor heard that.
- 29:17Speaker 2: When you catch me napping in the studio, it's self wellness.
- 29:20Speaker 2: I'm recharging the batteries, that's the plan. I'm not dozing off.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Don't doze off. If you're dozing off at work, wake up.
- 29:27Speaker 2: We got more stuff to talk about. As Texas goes
- 29:30Speaker 2: to Columbia, Missouri to take on Missouri this weekend, we'll
- 29:35Speaker 2: get you ready for it. Up next, The Craigway Show
- 29:37Speaker 2: continues Our number one rolls on on Sports Radio AM
- 29:40Speaker 2: thirteen hundred. Zone Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone
- 29:45Speaker 2: andrews im will hanging out with you this afternoon. Round
- 29:48Speaker 2: Rock and Sprets Baseball begins tomorrow. They go to Tacoma
- 29:53Speaker 2: nine pm. First pitch right here on the zone your
- 29:57Speaker 2: home for Round Rock Express Baseball. Well University of Texas
- 30:00Speaker 2: women's basketball sophomore the engine of the program, Madison Booker,
- 30:05Speaker 2: was selected one of four finalists for the twenty twenty
- 30:08Speaker 2: five Wage Trophy Women's Basketball Coach Association announced. The prestigious
- 30:13Speaker 2: award is presented by the WBCA each year to the
- 30:17Speaker 2: best player in women's college basketball. Booker and Rory Harmon
- 30:21Speaker 2: were selected as a regional finalists for the Coach's All
- 30:24Speaker 2: American Team. This season, Booker has been named the First
- 30:27Speaker 2: Team All American by the Associated Press and of course,
- 30:29Speaker 2: the SEC Player of the Year as well. In twenty
- 30:31Speaker 2: twenty four, Booker earned Big twelve Player of the Year
- 30:34Speaker 2: as a freshman and was a wc A WBCA First
- 30:37Speaker 2: Team All American. She earned the twenty twenty four Scheryl
- 30:40Speaker 2: Miller Small Ford of the Year Award as a finalist
- 30:42Speaker 2: again for that award. This season, scored twenty or more
- 30:47Speaker 2: points in fourteen games. She's by far one of the
- 30:50Speaker 2: best players in college basketball this season. She joins Paige
- 30:55Speaker 2: Beckers from Yukon, Hannah Hidalgo from Notre Dame, Juji Watkins
- 31:00Speaker 2: from USC or the other three finalists for the award.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Now the Way Trophy, it's the forty eight year. It's
- 31:07Speaker 2: the oldest most prestigious National Player of the Year award
- 31:10Speaker 2: in college women's basketball. I will say, of those four players,
- 31:15Speaker 2: and again I look to myself and I say, is
- 31:19Speaker 2: it me? Am I the problem? Am I the one
- 31:23Speaker 2: that is not doing enough of the national scope and
- 31:27Speaker 2: doing enough to pay attention to the ESPNS or the
- 31:31Speaker 2: Fox Sports or the CBS Sports is of the world.
- 31:34Speaker 2: When I see these award nominations come out, I think
- 31:38Speaker 2: it's obvious that the Texas Longhorns should be considered one
- 31:42Speaker 2: of the best teams in college basketball. And I think
- 31:44Speaker 2: it's obvious that they should be considered Nadison Booker should
- 31:49Speaker 2: be considered one of the best players in college basketball.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Now she gets named to the final four list for
- 31:53Speaker 2: again a very prestigious award, But I don't see the
- 31:57Speaker 2: conversation around this team going in the direction I thought
- 32:01Speaker 2: it would go. In fact, and we're going to try
- 32:04Speaker 2: to have him on the show tomorrow Neil Paine, who
- 32:08Speaker 2: is a freelance writer. He writes for a bunch of
- 32:11Speaker 2: different places, but he writes for ESPN, and this is
- 32:13Speaker 2: the story that I saw today. He's talking about the
- 32:15Speaker 2: hot and cold teams coming into the Sweet sixteen. As
- 32:18Speaker 2: the men's college basketball Sweet Sixteen starts tonight women's begins tomorrow,
- 32:24Speaker 2: they were talking about the teams that are cooling down,
- 32:26Speaker 2: and on the men's side of things, they talked about
- 32:28Speaker 2: number one seeded Auburn, and on the women's side of things,
- 32:32Speaker 2: they pointed out the Texas Longhorns, and I had a
- 32:35Speaker 2: little bit of an issue with that. I look through
- 32:38Speaker 2: the games that they've played, I see the way that
- 32:40Speaker 2: things have been going, and it feels like this is
- 32:42Speaker 2: just one of those that you are putting. Some team
- 32:46Speaker 2: has to be the cool off team, so we're gonna
- 32:48Speaker 2: make it Texas. So the tournament point per game differential
- 32:53Speaker 2: is plus thirty five thirty and a half, so they're
- 32:56Speaker 2: doing a good job scoring the basketball. The difference, though,
- 32:59Speaker 2: is that they're not beating teams by as much as
- 33:02Speaker 2: they're projected I guess to be beating teams by Okay,
- 33:07Speaker 2: that seems like a very nitpicky, very slim reason to
- 33:13Speaker 2: be upset about a team. Again, We're gonna try to
- 33:16Speaker 2: talk to him tomorrow, the writer of the article, and
- 33:18Speaker 2: figure out why he has all burned as a one
- 33:22Speaker 2: seed on the men's side of things cooling off and
- 33:24Speaker 2: then Texas on the women's side things. But again, life
- 33:27Speaker 2: does not get any easier for the Texas Longhorns. They
- 33:29Speaker 2: play the Lady Bowls on a Saturday and a jam
- 33:31Speaker 2: Pack Saturday matchup, and then they're gonna play the winner
- 33:34Speaker 2: of Notre Dame in TCU, which I was saying to Craig,
- 33:37Speaker 2: and I've said to everybody, you have a chance to
- 33:39Speaker 2: play a box.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Office after box office after box office.
- 33:42Speaker 2: The Lady Bowls historically one of the best women's basketball programs,
- 33:46Speaker 2: Notre Dame historically one of the best women's basketball programs.
- 33:49Speaker 2: USC the South Carolina game Cocks again, national champion pedigree,
- 33:54Speaker 2: and then you count on the other side of the
- 33:55Speaker 2: bracket you might see in the National Championship. So there's
- 33:57Speaker 2: a lot of excitement obviously around this team. I just
- 34:01Speaker 2: don't understand why it's not spreading past the forty acres.
- 34:04Speaker 2: That is really the head scratcher. For me, and Craig
- 34:08Speaker 2: keeps giving me grief about the disrespect. I feel disrespected.
- 34:11Speaker 2: I feel like I'm a Rodney dangerfield. I'm not saying
- 34:14Speaker 2: it's disrespectful. I'm just saying that I'm expecting more fanfare
- 34:19Speaker 2: around a team that should be picked for one of
- 34:21Speaker 2: the best teams in the country. All right, Texas Baseball.
- 34:26Speaker 2: They go to Columbia Missouri tomorrow, take on Missouri. Now,
- 34:30Speaker 2: the Tigers this season, it has not gone the way
- 34:33Speaker 2: that they expected. I imagine. They're zero to six and
- 34:36Speaker 2: conference play. They have one of the worst run differentials
- 34:40Speaker 2: in the SEC this season to this point. And Texas
- 34:44Speaker 2: on the other side of things, well, they're getting the
- 34:46Speaker 2: job done. They beat sam Houston on Tuesday night in
- 34:51Speaker 2: seven innings, thirteen to three. They're coming off of an
- 34:54Speaker 2: incredible SEC home weekend against LSU, and they score in
- 35:00Speaker 2: each of the final six innings against sam Houston State.
- 35:03Speaker 2: The bats have continued to look hot. Texas mounted a
- 35:06Speaker 2: double digit runs in the eighth inning to total sixteen knocks,
- 35:10Speaker 2: including nine extra base hits.
- 35:12Speaker 3: In the win.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Texas talied three home runs, highlighted by the go ahead
- 35:16Speaker 2: three run blast by Jalen Flores In the third Flores
- 35:20Speaker 2: notched his ninth multi hit performance and finished the season
- 35:23Speaker 2: high with four RBIs. In the fifth inning, third baseman
- 35:27Speaker 2: Adrian Rodriguez joined the home run derby with a two
- 35:29Speaker 2: run shot into the Yetti yard. Three batches later, We'll Go.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Will Glaspio launched a four hundred and thirty eight foot
- 35:39Speaker 2: jack extended lead to ten to two. The Longhorns looked
- 35:43Speaker 2: great Kate Bing, who I've given slash Lego a little
- 35:48Speaker 2: bit of grief kind of sort of every time I
- 35:51Speaker 2: hear him talk about Bing, it doesn't sound like he's,
- 35:54Speaker 2: you know, as excited about Kate Bing as you know
- 35:57Speaker 2: some of the other pitchers and being looked really good
- 36:00Speaker 2: his first win in the burn Ors pitch the first
- 36:02Speaker 2: four innings, allowed two runs, struck out four of all
- 36:06Speaker 2: of the guys.
- 36:07Speaker 3: He's a left hander.
- 36:08Speaker 2: I think that might also be part of the reason
- 36:10Speaker 2: I have a soft spot for him. As you know,
- 36:12Speaker 2: I was lovingly known as the hefty lefty when you know,
- 36:16Speaker 2: no big deal. I like left handed pitchers. I'm a
- 36:19Speaker 2: big left handed pitcher guy, and I think Kate Bing
- 36:21Speaker 2: is a good left handed pitcher.
- 36:23Speaker 3: I like him.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Sam Houston starter Danny Valdez picked up the loss after
- 36:27Speaker 2: just two innings. He got tagged for four runs in
- 36:30Speaker 2: six hits. In the win, six different Longhorns had multi
- 36:34Speaker 2: hit games, led by three from Ethan Mendozo. Next up,
- 36:38Speaker 2: of course, that three game road trip against the Tigers
- 36:41Speaker 2: in Missouri. So LONGWOT Baseball continues to look hot Slashnagle
- 36:45Speaker 2: continues to coach very well. Obviously, the success of this
- 36:50Speaker 2: team is going to come down to the success of
- 36:52Speaker 2: the pitching staff, and because of that, you have to
- 36:54Speaker 2: give a lot of credit to Max Wiener, the pitching coach.
- 36:57Speaker 2: I am very excited about how much excitement obviously is
- 37:02Speaker 2: around the pitching staff. I talked to a friend earlier
- 37:06Speaker 2: this week and I was comparing contrasting last season to
- 37:09Speaker 2: this season, because I think that's the most fair thing
- 37:11Speaker 2: that you can do when you compare a season over season,
- 37:14Speaker 2: is Yeah, you can look at the run differential, you
- 37:16Speaker 2: can look at the wins, and last year they were
- 37:19Speaker 2: in the Big twelve.
- 37:19Speaker 3: This year in the SEC.
- 37:21Speaker 2: I go off vibes a lot of times too, and
- 37:23Speaker 2: the vibes of this season just feel like a lot better.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Do you just you go to the ballpark or you
- 37:31Speaker 2: talk about the team, or you're around the team, or
- 37:33Speaker 2: you're listening to players, and it just feels like there's
- 37:35Speaker 2: more energy, more excitement. And maybe that's because it's your
- 37:38Speaker 2: one in the SEC. But I'm also going to lean
- 37:41Speaker 2: on the fact that you had a seventeen game win
- 37:42Speaker 2: streak to start the year and that you beat LSU,
- 37:45Speaker 2: a team that you're probably gonna have to face off
- 37:47Speaker 2: against in the SEC tournament and you might have to
- 37:49Speaker 2: see again in Omaha. And you look at the rest
- 37:51Speaker 2: of the SEC, and you have games against Georgia, and
- 37:54Speaker 2: you have games against Auburn, and you play Texas A
- 37:57Speaker 2: and M at home in late April. I just looked
- 38:02Speaker 2: through it, and I say, like, this is if you
- 38:05Speaker 2: compared where the team is now versus where you thought
- 38:08Speaker 2: it was gonna be before the season, you gotta feel
- 38:10Speaker 2: you gotta feel pretty good, all right when we come back.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Baseball season begins today in the major leagues. Who is
- 38:17Speaker 2: the favorite? And what are those scoreboards looking like? There's
- 38:20Speaker 2: already a game in action. Pinstripes are up. We'll talk
- 38:23Speaker 2: about it next. Andrew Zim will fill in for Craig
- 38:24Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Sports Radio
- 38:29Speaker 2: AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 38:30Speaker 3: How you doing? Andrews Zim will.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Hanging out with you this Thursday afternoon, Craig joining the
- 38:35Speaker 2: program in about an hour four seventeen. We're gonna talk
- 38:38Speaker 2: all things Texas with the voice of the Longhorns as
- 38:41Speaker 2: he travels today. Texas women playing on Saturday in the
- 38:47Speaker 2: Sweet sixteen, trying to cut down the nets move on
- 38:49Speaker 2: to the Elite eight. Their challenger will be a tough
- 38:53Speaker 2: one in the Birmingham region. They're taking on five seeded
- 38:56Speaker 2: Tennessee the Lady Bowls, a store program, obviously a program
- 39:02Speaker 2: that has a lot on the line too as a
- 39:05Speaker 2: five seed coming into that matchup. They will then play
- 39:07Speaker 2: the winner of a Notre Dame and TCU, which Notre
- 39:12Speaker 2: Dame one of two teams who has beaten the University
- 39:15Speaker 2: of Texas this season. Obviously a team that you do
- 39:19Speaker 2: not want to face a third a second time. If
- 39:23Speaker 2: you're if a Longhorn, you'd rather probably see TCU. I
- 39:27Speaker 2: went down the lineups for TCU and Notre Dame as
- 39:31Speaker 2: they play the first game on Saturday noon.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Tip.
- 39:36Speaker 2: TCU technically matches up better with Notre Dame that I
- 39:41Speaker 2: think Texas matches up with Notre Dame, but I think
- 39:45Speaker 2: Texas matches up better against TCU. Does that make sense?
- 39:49Speaker 2: So Sador Prince, who has been I think she's played
- 39:53Speaker 2: college basketball now longer than most of her teammates have
- 39:56Speaker 2: been alive. I think she's like a seven year she's
- 40:00Speaker 2: been at TCU thanks to injuries and COVID years. Obviously,
- 40:05Speaker 2: she is going to be the focal point now. She
- 40:06Speaker 2: has not been the talk of the con the talk
- 40:08Speaker 2: of the team because of Hailey van Lyff, who came
- 40:12Speaker 2: over from LSU, who had a great career at Louisville
- 40:14Speaker 2: Before that, Hailey van Lyth has been the story of
- 40:18Speaker 2: this season because this is her third team. She's going
- 40:20Speaker 2: into the WNBA Draft at the end of the season.
- 40:23Speaker 2: She has been the talk of this TCU team, and
- 40:26Speaker 2: you got to give a lot of credit to their
- 40:27Speaker 2: coaching staff over there as well. There's turned a TCU
- 40:30Speaker 2: women's basketball program that honestly, for the longest time not
- 40:34Speaker 2: very recognizable, did not really move the needle. Now they
- 40:37Speaker 2: are trying to become a perennial deep team going into
- 40:42Speaker 2: these tournaments. That of course begins with trying to knock
- 40:45Speaker 2: off Notre Dame. We will see how that gets done. Texas,
- 40:48Speaker 2: of course, has to focus on the task at hand,
- 40:51Speaker 2: which is Tennessee on Saturday, so we'll talk to Craig
- 40:54Speaker 2: about that. We also will speak on Texas and Missouri,
- 40:56Speaker 2: which a lot of people are not as nearly excited.
- 41:00Speaker 2: They're not as excited about that matchup. I don't think
- 41:02Speaker 2: nearly is even necessary. They're not as excited about going
- 41:06Speaker 2: to Columbia Missouri as they would be to have LSU
- 41:10Speaker 2: come to town and then Georgia come to town the
- 41:11Speaker 2: following week. Those games are gonna move a lot more
- 41:15Speaker 2: people are gonna get a lot more people in the
- 41:16Speaker 2: stands and watching on their screens than a series matchup
- 41:20Speaker 2: against Missouri. However, it is the SEC, and it is
- 41:24Speaker 2: a conference that you have to bring your best. You
- 41:27Speaker 2: cannot fall asleep at the wheel. The last series that
- 41:32Speaker 2: Missouri played was the weekend series against Old miss at home,
- 41:35Speaker 2: number twenty four ranked Old miss absolutely molly wopped them.
- 41:40Speaker 2: You're talking about nine to six on Friday, that's the
- 41:43Speaker 2: closest it ever got, seventeen to ten on Saturday and
- 41:46Speaker 2: fourteen to six on Sunday, and then it wasn't any
- 41:50Speaker 2: prettier the following or the weekend prior against LSU So
- 41:53Speaker 2: Missouri owen six in conference play. They're trying to get
- 41:57Speaker 2: things rolling on their end, trying to make some thing happened.
- 42:01Speaker 2: And of course every time the Longhorns show up anywhere,
- 42:04Speaker 2: does not matter the sport, doesn't matter the season, it
- 42:07Speaker 2: is the other teams super Bowl, They're going to bring
- 42:10Speaker 2: their very best.
- 42:11Speaker 3: Speaking of the very.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Best, the defending American League champion winners, the New York Yankees,
- 42:17Speaker 2: begin their run back to the postseason today, game one
- 42:24Speaker 2: of one hundred and sixty two. Yankees lead the Milwaukee
- 42:29Speaker 2: Brewers two to one, currently in the top of the fourth.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Other games in action, Twins and Cardinals are in a
- 42:36Speaker 2: rain delay and the top of the first that game
- 42:37Speaker 2: being played in Saint Louis, and in the middle of
- 42:40Speaker 2: the second Baltimore leading the Blue Jays in a battle
- 42:43Speaker 2: of the Birds to zero. Which is a good segue
- 42:47Speaker 2: into the favorites this season. If you missed our number one,
- 42:51Speaker 2: you go back and listen to podcast. But we had
- 42:52Speaker 2: Kyle Glasser from the Major League Baseball Network talking to
- 42:56Speaker 2: us about not only Texas Baseball, which he has a
- 43:00Speaker 2: bold prediction. I asked him for a bold one. He
- 43:03Speaker 2: gave me a Giants pick. I thought it's per addiction
- 43:06Speaker 2: against the Texas Rangers, saying that the Rangers were going
- 43:09Speaker 2: to be the team to win the American League this year.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I thought that was a much more spicy take than
- 43:15Speaker 2: anything else that he said. But the favorite in the
- 43:19Speaker 2: American League this season is still currently the New York Yankees.
- 43:23Speaker 2: They open up as a plus eight fifty favorite in
- 43:29Speaker 2: to win the World Series. Of course, they are the
- 43:32Speaker 2: third best odds according to ESPN bets. The Braves are
- 43:36Speaker 2: the second best at plus eight hundred, but the odds
- 43:39Speaker 2: on favorite the largest favorite since ESPN has been keeping
- 43:43Speaker 2: track of this, and since the two Yankees. The LA
- 43:48Speaker 2: Dodgers plus two to seventy five, which means that they
- 43:52Speaker 2: have the shortest odds to win the entire thing. In fact,
- 43:55Speaker 2: their odds are as short as the New York Yankees,
- 43:59Speaker 2: notes there were plus two hundred. The Dodgers have the
- 44:03Speaker 2: best team, they have the best player, but in baseball,
- 44:06Speaker 2: that does not necessarily mean that you're going to win
- 44:09Speaker 2: the best trophy, which would be the Commissioner Trophy right
- 44:13Speaker 2: to win the World Series. That does not necessarily mean
- 44:15Speaker 2: you will win the World Series. Even if you win
- 44:18Speaker 2: one hundred plus games and you have the generational superstar
- 44:21Speaker 2: that is Shohel Tani. It's going to come down to
- 44:25Speaker 2: how teams play in the postseason, which is super lame
- 44:28Speaker 2: to be talking about in late early or late March,
- 44:31Speaker 2: early in the season, game number one of the year.
- 44:33Speaker 2: But I think that those are the standards, and that
- 44:35Speaker 2: is the level that the Dodgers are now playing for
- 44:39Speaker 2: that they're not as interested in winning one hundred games.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Ten years ago, fifteen years ago, you talked about the
- 44:45Speaker 2: Dodgers in the NL West with the Giants and the Diamondbacks. Says, okay,
- 44:49Speaker 2: whichever team gets to ninety five wins first, to ninety
- 44:52Speaker 2: eight wins first will win the division. But now the
- 44:55Speaker 2: Dodgers are so far and away the favorites in not
- 44:58Speaker 2: only the division, not only in the league, the National League,
- 45:02Speaker 2: but across baseball that if anything except for a World
- 45:06Speaker 2: Series win will be seen as a disappointment. So those
- 45:10Speaker 2: are the standards that they're living on now, and it's
- 45:13Speaker 2: not ideal. I would not wish that upon any fan base.
- 45:18Speaker 2: You argue that the Cleveland Browns or some of those
- 45:21Speaker 2: really badly, poorly run franchises that those fans suffer the worst.
- 45:26Speaker 2: I don't necessarily agree with that. I would say that
- 45:29Speaker 2: the fans of teams that are supposed to be good
- 45:32Speaker 2: every single season to start the year have a worse
- 45:35Speaker 2: life because every single week, every single game for seven
- 45:40Speaker 2: months now, Dodgers fans are gonna have to deal with,
- 45:43Speaker 2: will you're the odds on favorite to win the World Series?
- 45:46Speaker 2: If you beat the Chicago Cubs, if you beat the
- 45:48Speaker 2: Saint Louis Cardinals, if you beat insert team here. It
- 45:52Speaker 2: does not move the needle. Nobody's gonna be get super
- 45:54Speaker 2: excited about Shoheo Tani four for five game with two
- 45:57Speaker 2: home runs and six RBIs. I'll get excited because I
- 46:00Speaker 2: like Otani. Craig will get excited because he likes the Dodgers.
- 46:03Speaker 2: But average baseball fans are going to say, well, that
- 46:06Speaker 2: is what you were supposed to do, you are the
- 46:08Speaker 2: best team. Those are the expectations, right for bad teams, Well,
- 46:13Speaker 2: you kind of expect to be bad. You kind of
- 46:15Speaker 2: know what you are going to get. If the Dodgers
- 46:18Speaker 2: go on a two week slump, if Shoheo Tani has
- 46:22Speaker 2: a slump during the season. It's going to be endless conversation,
- 46:25Speaker 2: endless chatter. So I always say that coming into a year,
- 46:29Speaker 2: the worst thing for a sports fan to have is hope,
- 46:31Speaker 2: because hope can be crushed.
- 46:33Speaker 3: That is the dashing thing.
- 46:35Speaker 2: So the Dodgers, yeah, they open up as the favorite,
- 46:37Speaker 2: but if you ask me the team that you don't
- 46:41Speaker 2: want to be, but I can make a case that
- 46:44Speaker 2: it is a better life with Chicago White Sox. The
- 46:47Speaker 2: White Sox are picked to lose a ton of games
- 46:50Speaker 2: again this year. The White Sox are projected to have
- 46:53Speaker 2: a win total of fifty three and a half. This
- 46:56Speaker 2: is coming after a season last year where they lost
- 46:59Speaker 2: a hundred and twenty one games. They play one hundred
- 47:02Speaker 2: and sixty two of them one hundred and twenty one
- 47:05Speaker 2: losses the Dodger or the Chicago White Sox had last year.
- 47:09Speaker 2: It's the lowest win total in over thirty five years
- 47:12Speaker 2: for a team, and even then, fifty three and a
- 47:15Speaker 2: half is twelve and a half games better than what
- 47:18Speaker 2: they actually performed with last year. White Sox fans have
- 47:22Speaker 2: zero hope, and yet, and yet, on the South Side
- 47:25Speaker 2: of Chicago, people are showing up to watch Opening Day,
- 47:28Speaker 2: and yet even with a awful ball club, people are
- 47:33Speaker 2: gonna show up to watch and play the Angels this
- 47:36Speaker 2: afternoon at ray Field because they have no hope of
- 47:39Speaker 2: winning the World Series. They have no hope. Their only
- 47:42Speaker 2: hope is to be better than they were last year.
- 47:45Speaker 2: That is a better world to live in. That's a
- 47:47Speaker 2: more realistic world to live in. During the football season,
- 47:50Speaker 2: I have a team that I root for, the Minnesota Vikings,
- 47:53Speaker 2: and like Cowboys fans, I feel like are always miserable
- 47:56Speaker 2: because they're always going for well it's Super Bowl or
- 47:59Speaker 2: bus super Bowl or bust. And I get to live
- 48:03Speaker 2: a world where my team's never won anything of importance.
- 48:06Speaker 2: So every single week for seventeen weeks, I'm going game
- 48:09Speaker 2: after game after game we win, I'm over the moon.
- 48:13Speaker 2: We lose, well by Monday morning, Tuesday morning, I'm over
- 48:16Speaker 2: and I'm moving past it. Okay, if your goal as
- 48:19Speaker 2: a Dodgers fan is to win the World Series and
- 48:21Speaker 2: you have these high, high expectations, it's very difficult to
- 48:28Speaker 2: be excited about a weekend series against the A's. It's
- 48:33Speaker 2: very hard to get excited for a weekend series against
- 48:37Speaker 2: the team that doesn't have those type of expectations. Sure,
- 48:40Speaker 2: when the Braves come to town, when the Dimonbacks come
- 48:43Speaker 2: to town, when the Giants come in town a rivalry game, yeah,
- 48:45Speaker 2: people are gonna get excited for those games. But you're
- 48:48Speaker 2: supposed to win. And for Dodgers fans, you come in
- 48:52Speaker 2: with a lot of hope this year, and sometimes that's
- 48:55Speaker 2: the worst thing to have because those hopes can get dashed.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Speaking of hope, all right, ends basketball. The Sweet Sixteen
- 49:02Speaker 2: begins tonight with number six BYU and number two Auburn. However,
- 49:07Speaker 2: the transfer portal already opened, and there are some teams
- 49:12Speaker 2: that are not thrilled and some coaches that had a
- 49:15Speaker 2: lot to say about it. We'll hear from him next.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Andrews Im will fill it in for Craig on Sports Radio
- 49:19Speaker 2: AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 49:23Speaker 2: The Zone. This musically wants me to put my hard
- 49:26Speaker 2: hat on and get to work. That's what coaches are
- 49:29Speaker 2: having to do as the transfer portal opened up this
- 49:33Speaker 2: week for college basketball, and we already saw a couple
- 49:37Speaker 2: of players jump into it. Not ideal, especially as NCAA
- 49:42Speaker 2: tournament action continues for the men and the women's side
- 49:46Speaker 2: of things. The men begin tonight six pm. Number sixty
- 49:49Speaker 2: to BYU versus number two seeded Alabama, Maryland and Florida
- 49:53Speaker 2: play as well tonight Arizona and Duke and Arkansas and
- 49:56Speaker 2: Texas Tech. That is your matchup tonight on the men's
- 49:59Speaker 2: side of the brack. But a lot of players are
- 50:02Speaker 2: jumping in the portal, including some guys who are still
- 50:06Speaker 2: on teams. Right, we saw the news out of Michigan
- 50:10Speaker 2: that as Michigan gets ready to play their matchup tomorrow,
- 50:13Speaker 2: that Scottie Pippens's son is a guy who's already going
- 50:18Speaker 2: on the transfer portal. Not ideal as Michigan plays number
- 50:21Speaker 2: one seed at Auburn tomorrow at eight thirty. Right, there's
- 50:25Speaker 2: a lot of people who are upset. Needless to say,
- 50:29Speaker 2: tom Izzo, the Elder Statesman, had the most to say
- 50:32Speaker 2: about the transfer portal.
- 50:34Speaker 4: You know, I'm gonna worry today. But the guys I
- 50:37Speaker 4: got in this program that have done an incredible job
- 50:40Speaker 4: this year, and that's it. And if that cost me later,
- 50:46Speaker 4: so be it. But Tomzo isn't cheating the people that
- 50:50Speaker 4: he has that have been loyal to him for this
- 50:55Speaker 4: chaos that is going on out there. Cool, you got enough. No, no,
- 51:04Speaker 4: because you don't understand. When I came back Sunday night,
- 51:09Speaker 4: that was it. There was nothing on my mind. But
- 51:12Speaker 4: given these guys a chance to win one more game,
- 51:14Speaker 4: get to a leitate and one more game, and have
- 51:17Speaker 4: a memory that'll last their entire life, their kids' life,
- 51:21Speaker 4: and their grandkid's life.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Justin Pippin the guard, the freshman guard from Michigan uh
- 51:27Speaker 2: jumps to the transfer portal. I understand where Tom Mizzo
- 51:31Speaker 2: is coming from. I cannot imagine having to coach college
- 51:35Speaker 2: basketball at the same time have to try to re
- 51:39Speaker 2: recruit my players so they don't jump into the portal.
- 51:42Speaker 2: This is madness. It does not make any sense. And
- 51:46Speaker 2: when you consider again that Tom Izzo and his team
- 51:51Speaker 2: are trying to cut down the nets and win a
- 51:53Speaker 2: national championship, and he goes on to talk about how
- 51:56Speaker 2: he's trying to give these young men memories for a lifetime.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Going to the national championship, playing in the National Championship,
- 52:04Speaker 2: playing in the Elite eight or a Final four is
- 52:06Speaker 2: a giant deal. And Izzo knows what it's like to
- 52:12Speaker 2: win those big games. He knows what it takes to
- 52:15Speaker 2: get to the mountaintop, And I'll tell you what it takes.
- 52:19Speaker 2: It takes not having to spend time re recruiting your players.
- 52:23Speaker 2: It takes time away from game planning. For Old Miss.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Chris Beard is a very good coach. Texas fans know that,
- 52:32Speaker 2: I know that you know that that Chris Beard is
- 52:34Speaker 2: a very good coach, and Old Miss, even at sixteen,
- 52:37Speaker 2: is a very good Teamzo does not have time to
- 52:41Speaker 2: re recruit players. But you think about what happens when
- 52:45Speaker 2: a guy like Justin Pippen, who announced on Monday that
- 52:50Speaker 2: he is going into the transfer portal. He appeared in
- 52:53Speaker 2: the regular season finale against Michigan State, scored two points
- 52:57Speaker 2: and assists and a loss of the Spartans. He only
- 52:59Speaker 2: played a couple of minutes a game this season. But okay,
- 53:06Speaker 2: you're thinking to yourself, well, doesn't matters Zimble that a
- 53:10Speaker 2: guy who doesn't really play, didn't really contribute, decides to
- 53:14Speaker 2: jump in the portal. It does matters a ton, especially
- 53:19Speaker 2: this part of the year and what happened. And again
- 53:23Speaker 2: it feels bad because you know, Justin Pippen is a
- 53:25Speaker 2: freshman and he still has a lot of basketball to play.
- 53:29Speaker 2: Obviously he's gonna go somewhere else. He's gonna try to
- 53:31Speaker 2: get a better deal. He's gonna try to get better
- 53:32Speaker 2: playing time. But what happened to guys sticking around on
- 53:37Speaker 2: their teams? And everybody will throw back in your face, Well,
- 53:40Speaker 2: coaches can leave. Coaches can leave whenever they want. It's different.
- 53:46Speaker 2: What happened to sticking around with your teammates. I feel
- 53:49Speaker 2: like an old guy. I feel like I should say
- 53:51Speaker 2: get off my lawn here. But it just is different.
- 53:54Speaker 2: And now take any consideration new coaches. We talked about
- 53:59Speaker 2: coaches even all the times. Xavier's head coach Sean Miller,
- 54:02Speaker 2: the new head coach of the Texas men's basketball team.
- 54:05Speaker 2: He was on five Bob yesterday talking about nil and
- 54:09Speaker 2: how to build a program, especially on the fly.
- 54:13Speaker 6: I'm sure you know it's like flying a plane and
- 54:15Speaker 6: putting it together. At the same time, I think it's
- 54:18Speaker 6: very much a work in progress. Some things have already
- 54:21Speaker 6: been worked on and I think are better. But there
- 54:25Speaker 6: has to be a little bit more legislation, and I
- 54:28Speaker 6: think just a few more rules to govern all of
- 54:30Speaker 6: us that could make it even better in the future.
- 54:33Speaker 6: And look, it's we're at a time where the student
- 54:35Speaker 6: athletes can make money. There's nothing wrong with that name,
- 54:39Speaker 6: image and likeness. But I think the way to be
- 54:41Speaker 6: able to have the transfer portal work and the timing
- 54:45Speaker 6: of that and just how it all works, there's a
- 54:48Speaker 6: number of things that I think can be improved here
- 54:51Speaker 6: in the short term.
- 54:52Speaker 5: In terms of putting your staff together and getting players.
- 54:56Speaker 3: What is next for you?
- 54:59Speaker 6: What starts with the players that are here at Texas
- 55:01Speaker 6: right now? You know they went through a change, and
- 55:04Speaker 6: you know you have to respect the fact that that
- 55:06Speaker 6: they've gone through a lot over these last couple of weeks.
- 55:09Speaker 6: So I think just making sure they're okay and figuring
- 55:12Speaker 6: out who are going to have from last year's team
- 55:15Speaker 6: moving forward with us for the future, and then obviously
- 55:18Speaker 6: bringing in those guys that we don't have right now,
- 55:23Speaker 6: which will come via the transfer portal, and a lot
- 55:25Speaker 6: will happen here in the next eight weeks.
- 55:27Speaker 2: So you have a situation, and Sarkisian spoke about this
- 55:30Speaker 2: as well with college football, that you are essentially having
- 55:33Speaker 2: to game plan every single day if you're a coach
- 55:36Speaker 2: that is still in the tournament, game plan for your
- 55:38Speaker 2: next opponent. And at the same time, you have guys
- 55:41Speaker 2: who could potentially be walking out the door and exiting
- 55:44Speaker 2: stage left and going for another check. Now, I don't
- 55:47Speaker 2: want it to all be about money. It might be
- 55:51Speaker 2: more money than anything else. It might be sixty forty
- 55:54Speaker 2: money to playing time, But I want to focus on
- 55:56Speaker 2: the guys who want to go get playing time, want
- 56:00Speaker 2: to go get coached up, want to go better their careers,
- 56:04Speaker 2: better even their academic careers. Hey, I took a math
- 56:07Speaker 2: class at this school and it's not cutting it. I
- 56:09Speaker 2: need to go somewhere else. I the vibes of the
- 56:12Speaker 2: academics at the school don't matter. I'm trying to go
- 56:14Speaker 2: somewhere else where they do. I'm trying to give those
- 56:17Speaker 2: players a little bit of grace because I think they are.
- 56:19Speaker 2: There are those type of guys. But I find it
- 56:22Speaker 2: very difficult to believe that that is happening all the time.
- 56:26Speaker 2: And I think most of the time it is about money.
- 56:29Speaker 2: And I think most of the time it does turn
- 56:31Speaker 2: in to a who can cut me the biggest check,
- 56:34Speaker 2: which makes me feel dirty. I don't even like hinting
- 56:38Speaker 2: to it. It makes me icky inside, to be completely
- 56:41Speaker 2: honest with you, But that is the world that we
- 56:44Speaker 2: live in today. So I look at it and I say,
- 56:47Speaker 2: I balance it out. And I thought Seth Greenberg, who
- 56:50Speaker 2: was on ESPN's first take, They asked him about tom
- 56:53Speaker 2: Izzo and his comments about the transfer portal everything else,
- 56:58Speaker 2: and this is what he had to say.
- 57:00Speaker 3: One hundred percent. I agree with this though, but here's
- 57:02Speaker 3: the problem. It's the A C double A.
- 57:03Speaker 7: The transfer portal, first of all, is open twelve months
- 57:06Speaker 7: a year, seven days a week, twenty four hours a day.
- 57:08Speaker 3: That's just the way it is.
- 57:09Speaker 5: The reality.
- 57:10Speaker 7: The agents said, are are shopping these guys year round.
- 57:13Speaker 7: Having said that, I spoke to Tomo that morning and
- 57:16Speaker 7: he was talking about this exact situation. The portal officially
- 57:20Speaker 7: should not open until after the NCAA Tournament one. The
- 57:25Speaker 7: portal should not open once the brackets are announced on
- 57:28Speaker 7: that Sunday. To the NCAA term. They're dead pariods throughout
- 57:32Speaker 7: throughout the year in college basketball. Why shouldn't this be
- 57:37Speaker 7: a dead period. It should be a dead period. Let
- 57:39Speaker 7: people get lost in their teams, get leading people that lost,
- 57:42Speaker 7: and being the best version of themselves coaching our teams.
- 57:45Speaker 2: I agree one thousand percent with Seth Greenberg from ESPN
- 57:49Speaker 2: because you are all the way right there should be
- 57:53Speaker 2: a dead period, it should end with selection Sunday. And
- 57:57Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, let's be real here, the month of March.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Is it really gonna change all that much? Is it
- 58:04Speaker 2: really gonna change all that much when it comes to
- 58:07Speaker 2: guys can't move teams. And again, I'm not even saying
- 58:12Speaker 2: that agents, which guys can now have in college. I'm
- 58:15Speaker 2: not saying that players can't talk or.
- 58:18Speaker 3: You just can't go into portal. You just got to
- 58:20Speaker 3: be with your team.
- 58:22Speaker 2: And if a coach says, hey, Zimmle, you're the fifteenth
- 58:27Speaker 2: guy on the bench, you're obviously not cut out to
- 58:29Speaker 2: play college basketball at our institution, at our university. You
- 58:33Speaker 2: don't fit with the program. You should look for other
- 58:37Speaker 2: opportunities somewhere else. We probably kind of want to put
- 58:39Speaker 2: that scholarship you got up in somebody else's hands as well.
- 58:43Speaker 2: You can go start looking for other teams. But you're
- 58:47Speaker 2: just with the team in practice. You're another body that's around,
- 58:51Speaker 2: like Justin Pippen who decides to leave the Wolverines, the
- 58:55Speaker 2: Michigan Wolverines as they take on Auburn tomorrow, borrow that
- 59:02Speaker 2: leaves Michigan in such a tough spot Now, if you
- 59:06Speaker 2: ask me, Auburn's a nine and a half point favorite,
- 59:08Speaker 2: They're probably going to roll Michigan. Like all things being equal,
- 59:13Speaker 2: even with Justin Pippen, Michigan probably doesn't have the team,
- 59:17Speaker 2: doesn't have the firepower to be an Auburn team. But
- 59:21Speaker 2: what good does it do for you to jump in
- 59:23Speaker 2: the portal?
- 59:23Speaker 3: Now?
- 59:25Speaker 2: What good does it do for you to go start
- 59:27Speaker 2: shopping yourself around and leave your organization, leave your team.
- 59:32Speaker 2: Even in the NFL, when guys come to the front
- 59:35Speaker 2: office in the offseason and say, hey, what we got
- 59:38Speaker 2: working here at this relationship it's not working. I want
- 59:41Speaker 2: to go look for another trade. I want to go
- 59:42Speaker 2: look somewhere else. In the NFL, you're seeing it today.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Player goes to the front office, talks to the general manager.
- 59:48Speaker 2: General manager says, you go find a trade and we'll
- 59:51Speaker 2: try to help you out.
- 59:52Speaker 3: Coaches will do the same thing.
- 59:54Speaker 2: I guarantee you that when it's all said and done,
- 59:57Speaker 2: Michigan State is won or lost, you go to Tommy
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: is Owe and you say, hey, I want to go
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: somewhere else. He's gonna say, all right, that's fine. He'll
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: probably give you a pitch to stick around if you
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: recruit you, he probably likes you enough to have you
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: stick around, but he's gonna help you out. He's gonna
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: help make that transition possible. What she shouldn't do is
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: good to him before he takes on a number six
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: old old Miss team that's coached very well, that has
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: a lot of great players that can knock you out.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: You don't go to the head coach and say, guess
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: what transfer portals open? I'm dipping out? Not great, Obviously,
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: the NCAA needs to fix some things. It's the wild
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Wild West and every single day is the Old ok Corral.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: That's what college basketball has turned into with the transfer
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: portal wide open. That's what college football's turned into with
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: the transfer portal wide open during the postseason. Okay, when
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: we come back. Mel kiper Junior has put out his
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: latest NFL Draft update after pro days at Texas and
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: other schools. Where do you players? Where do teams shake out?
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: We'll tell you where they are next. On Sports Radio
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: and thirteen hundred Zone.
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: Craig joined the program at.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Four seventeen, talking all things Texas with the voice Longhorns. Obviously,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Craig waits show rolls on an hour number two Andrews
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: WI will hanging out with you this afternoon. Games in
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: progress right now and opening day of the Major League
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Baseball season, New York Yankees leading the Milwaukee Brewers and
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: the bottom of the fifth two to one rain delay
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: in Saint Louis between the Cards and the Twins, and
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Baltimore all over Toronto, Ohs up six to zero on
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: the Toronto Blue Jays. Okay Pro Day came and went.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Across college football. There's a couple more that are still
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: kind of up in the air. We'll find out how
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: some of those teams do. But the guys over at ESPN,
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: Matt Miller, Melchiper Junior and company, they put out a
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: full mock draft, all seven rounds, all two hundred and
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: fifty seven picks. And I was curious because the long
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: wards didn't have a couple guys have good pro days
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: that would do to some of those rankings. Where would
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: some guys end up going? And the number one guy
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: who moved up, the guy that I should not be
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: surprised moved up as much as he did. But the
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: guy that did surprise me early was Johnny barn who
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: came out and had a very good pro day, spoke
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: very well to the media, spoke very well about his
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: team and really kind of everything else about the University
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: of Texas, and the big takeaway was how quickly he
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: moved up on the boards for guys like Matt and
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: mel Kiper. They currently have Johnny barn going number nine
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: overall to the New Orleans Saints. Now, this is a
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: match made in heaven in my mind. One because the
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Saints are in salary cap hell. They have no money,
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: They have no ability to get off of any money.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: They are essentially having to build a tea team on
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: the absolute cheapest with Derek Carr and some of the
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: other contracts that they've given out Cam Jordan. They don't
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: have any money to be spending the in the offseason,
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: so you got to go try to build your team
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: through the draft on those rookie deals. And Johnny barm,
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: which was originally slotted as a Day three prospect coming
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: into the twenty twenty fourth season, absolutely took off this
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: year for Texas. Five interceptions, nine pass deflections, and of
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: course winning the Thorpe Award for the best defensive Back.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: It's gotten him into the first round according to ESPN,
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: which is a big deal. I think that a lot
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: of the mock drafts and nobody knows anything until the
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: day that the draft actually happens, I think a lot
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: of that is true. I do also consider put this
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: into consideration that with the way that technology has gone,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: with the way that we're all more connected than ever,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: I think it's possible to say that a lot of
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: these mock drafts from the NFL Draft insiders are getting
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: closer and closer to being right. And for a team
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: like the Saints who need defensive help and a team
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: like the Saints who need to be able to build
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: on the fly with a team, I like that move
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: a lot. All right, let's move on number eighteen out
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: of the University of Texas. According to the guys over there,
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Matthew Golden. All right, I like ceu Isle's offense could
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: look very will look very different. They're replacing DK Metcalf
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: with Cooper Cup, they're replacing Gino Smith with Sam Donald,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: and they're adding Matthew Golden in place of recently let
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: go Tyler Lockett. Okay, now, Matthew Golden this past season
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: super fast, super locked on, and they already have Jackson Smith.
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: They already have Jackson Smith, Nijigbo who is going to
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: do a lot of the underneath stuff. I think Golden
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: is a deep threat for the University of Texas. He's
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: going to be a deep threat for Sam Donald. Now
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: he's trading in at Jordan Adson and Jamar Jefferson, which
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Justin Jefferson, which would you could argue are
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: the best wide receiver duo in the NFL, maybe only
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: behind Jamar Chase and t Higgins. Right, it's one of
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: the best wide receiver duos in the league. Darnold had
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: one of his best seasons. In fact, his best season
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: is a pro with a group receiving core. So you
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: need to go give him those players to put around him.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: Cooper Cup and Jackson Smith both work underneath Matthew Golden
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: takes a little bit more of that.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: I would say.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Jordan Adsen role of a deep threat fast down the sideline. Again,
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: two first rounds potentially for the University of Texas. Also
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: in the latest projections you have, we'll try to get
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: it here for you. Kevin Banks, of course going to
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: the Green Bay Packers. I like that move a lot
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: as well. The Packers who did not like the toush push.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: We're against the world where the toush push becomes an
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: everyday thing. Right, They went to the rules committee and
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: tried to move off of or tried to replace the
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: tush push and say it was dangerous for players.
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: I like the idea.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: That they're going to continue to build up their offensive
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: line and keep keep the game moving with the running
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: back room that they have. They went and got. They
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: went in last season and brought in Josh Jacobs out
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: of Alabama played for the Raiders. He had a good
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: season last year. Behind the offensive line. Kevin Banks gives
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: you a little bit more room, and also Jordan Love,
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: who suffered from a knee injury last year, gives them
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: a little bit more protection. Okay, well, let's talk about
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: the quarterback that you all care about, that we all
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: care about. It's quin yours and Quinn right now slotted
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: as a second round pick again the pro DA helps
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Derek Carr will be back next season. So they're saying
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: that the Saints are going after not one but two
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: early round Longhorns, and that would be Quinn. Ewers that
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: picked number forty. Around the league, he's projected, he's talked
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: about as the fourth best quarterback in this draft, behind
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: cam Ward to Door Sanders, Jackson Dart and then Quinn Ewers.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: I like it. I like where he's at. He's going
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: to be under a offensive coordinator that a lot of
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: Longhorn fans know from their pro days of Kellen Moore,
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: who coached the Dallas Cowboys. He's now the new head
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: coach of the New Orleans Saints. Quinn and Kellen Moore
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: have a lot in common. Both guys are very good
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: pocket passers. Both guys know how to read the defense.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: And I think if there's ever a coach ever an
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: offense that would be able to make the best out
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: of Quinn. The Saints have a lot of work. Salary
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: cap is a disaster, the defense is not that great,
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: but they are in a bad division in the NFC South,
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: and they do have a quarterback and Derek car that
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: will be gone after this season probably, So you're in
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: a good situation if you're Quinn. You're not gonna start
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: to start the year. You're gonna get to sit behind
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: a starter for at least probably ten twelve weeks, and
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: then at the end of the year they're going to
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: see what you got, which if you think about it,
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Quinn hasn't been fully healthy since probably his junior year
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: of high school. At this point, he's gotten beat up
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: every year that he was at the University of Texas,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: So give him a little bit of time to get
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: his body ready for the NFL game. He's not expected
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: to be the Day one starter. I like that move.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: I like Quinn being a guy who goes in the
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: second round and can make something happen. Of course, Alfred
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Collins also projected as a second rounder through the Atlanta Falcons,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: but yeah, a couple of and then Andrew mckimbo could
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: also go to again later round, second round to the
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills. So Longhorns early in this draft. Keep an
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: eye on that as we get more and more intel
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: coming in as the NFL Draft happens.
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: In early April.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: All right, when we come back, we'll wrap up our
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: number two and talk a little sweet sixteen action. Couple
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: games in play tonight. All that coming up next on
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone, Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: hundred The Zone, andrews zim will hang it out with
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: you as we wrap our number two of The Craigway
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: Show This Thursday, afternoon. Well, this past week was a
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: busy one for your boy, for the six man from
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: San Antonio, because Texas played Monday night one big on
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: the women's side of things, sixty five forty eight against Illinois.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: All right, and then we moved over and on Tuesday
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: we had a little softball action, another big win for
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: the softball team, blowout of Stephen F. Austin SFA. Okay,
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: feeling good. Now Wednesday, that is where our fulcrum point is.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: And I always tell people Wednesday is the day that
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: you decide how the week is going to go. You
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Monday and Tuesday were bad, Wednesdays the day you can
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: turn around your Monday and Tuesday were good. Well, Wednesday's
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: the thing that can really push you over the edge.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: So my Monday and Tuesday were busy, So it was
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: good that my Wednesday was hurry up and wait. I
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: got selected for jury duty.
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: I know I was. I was excited for it too.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: I was one of those weirdos who watches a lot
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: of Law and Order, a lot of criminal minds. So
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: I was like ready for jury duty. I've seen how
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: it's done on television a bajillion times. I was ready
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: to be the twelfth angry Man. I was ready to go,
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: and that did not end up happening. Instead, I was
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: supposed to get there at eight am. I was punctual.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: I was ready to go. I had to drive downtown,
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: so I got there early. I was ready, so were
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: a bunch of other people. I got in line, and
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: I was probably the one hundredth person in the line
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: that got there at seven thirty. So I don't know
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: what the rest of these guys were doing getting there
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: before thirty minutes before we were supposed to get there.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: I'm usually the early one, not the case that day.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: So get in line, get my parking validated. Huge news.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Ended up not getting validated right, ended up still owing
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: twelve dollars to the parking lot, So that happened.
