- 4:24Jennifer Davis: That message brought to you by Simply Leak Detection Well, Dan, it's time for the Redmond History Minute.
- 4:33Jennifer Davis: Are you ready for my question?
- 4:35Dan Schulz: I am ready.
- 4:36Dan Schulz: Hit me
- 4:37Jennifer Davis: Okay.
- 4:38Jennifer Davis: In 1960, a major recession in which industry caused Redmond's local ranches to close and forced farmers to switch to other crops?
- 4:49Jennifer Davis: Was it A, dairy farming, B, mink fur farming, C, apple orchards, or D, wool production?
- 4:59Jennifer Davis: And your time starts now
- 5:03Dan Schulz: Well, it's not mink fur farming.
- 5:06Dan Schulz: Mink don't live here, I don't think.
- 5:08Dan Schulz: Oh, I- this is hard one.
- 5:11Dan Schulz: Dairy farming, mink fur, apple or wool production
- 5:15Jennifer Davis: Yeah, a major recession happened that caused this industry to close
- 5:21Dan Schulz: I am going to say 100% wool production.
- 5:28Dan Schulz: Final answer.
- 5:30Jennifer Davis: Okay, Dan.
- 5:31Jennifer Davis: Well, your losing streak continues.
- 5:34Jennifer Davis: The answer is B, mink farming.
- 5:36Dan Schulz: Shut up.
- 5:38Dan Schulz: Are you serious?
- 5:39Jennifer Davis: I am.
- 5:40Jennifer Davis: Redmond had mink ranches along Way 120 in the 1950s, and I've never heard of Way 120, but apparently there used to be a Way 120
- 5:49Dan Schulz: Popular road, Way 120
- 5:51Jennifer Davis: Yeah, a- according to the Redmond Historical Society, this was a road that used to exist.
- 5:57Jennifer Davis: Well, in any case, when the fur industry crashed in 1960, the ranches shut down.
- 6:04Jennifer Davis: Nationwide, there were roughly 7,000 mink farms in the mid-1950s, but prices collapsed, and the industry shrank dramatically.
- 6:13Jennifer Davis: Before Redmond became the Microsoft city we know today, local farmers were raising mink for luxury fur coats.
- 6:21Jennifer Davis: And I've got a cousin up in Bellingham, lives in an old mink fur farming...
- 6:27Jennifer Davis: Like, it was p- they, part of their house, like they, that was it, and then they built a house onto it which is kinda crazy.
- 6:34Dan Schulz: I bet it's nice and toasty there.
- 6:36Dan Schulz: Is it still lined in mink?
- 6:46Dan Schulz: Sources say a neighborhood cinema, not a megaplex, so we're talking small movie theater, like think 40 seats, curated programming, and craft cocktails, and no popcorn smell, is in the very early talks for a space in Old Redmond.
- 7:04Dan Schulz: What we don't know is whether a location has been selected, whether financing is in place, or how serious the discussions have been.
- 7:11Dan Schulz: We also haven't been able to confirm any timeline, but it would be cool to have a, a interesting movie theater in town, and I like a smaller movie.
- 7:22Dan Schulz: I- this sounds really fun.
- 7:24Dan Schulz: This sounds like an event.
- 7:25Dan Schulz: Like, let's go to a movie, grab some wine.
- 7:27Dan Schulz: It's always a good time to grab some wine
- 7:31Jennifer Davis: No, I like it.
- 7:31Jennifer Davis: I like the idea of having a, a small curated type movie theater
- 7:36Dan Schulz: so the question we have is where do you think it'll be, and do you think you guys would go to it?
