- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with my partner,
- 0:50Brian seagull. I am Curtis Wilson, welcome to
- 0:54the new normal brine. Yes sir.
- 0:57Yes sir. Welcome back.
- 0:58It's a Tuesday night. We're riding Tuesdays at least
- 1:03from here on out to the end of the season.
- 1:06We'll see how we pivot from there but yeah.
- 1:09So look for us on Tuesday is going forward.
- 1:11It's a good Tuesday night though.
- 1:13Curtis how you feeling buddy. It is a Tuesday night little
- 1:16earlier in the week. You know, Brian says, watch
- 1:20first, on Tuesdays. We may flip it to Monday's for
- 1:23some of the Thursday games just to get the content out there
- 1:26earlier but I'm feeling good man.
- 1:29You know it's it's the summer is winding down in all aspects.
- 1:35Schools essentially is started here and it's footballs in the
- 1:42air. Watch several preseason games
- 1:45over the weekend. Yep.
- 1:49You know, we've had some mostly fall weather here man, like,
- 1:53especially last week and parts of this week or looking pretty
- 1:57nice. Not, not.
- 1:58Not that. Cool.
- 1:59But unseasonable e comfortable. Yeah, comfortable.
- 2:03Yeah. So we're really waiting for the
- 2:06September games that's 102 and it's just like miserable
- 2:10outside. Like this is it.
- 2:13Fun like hot games. Hard games and football.
- 2:17Just do not go together. At least we should we should be
- 2:20pretty good for for the opener because it's, you know, 8:00, so
- 2:24it's a night game but it down at the beach, you can get a little
- 2:28humidity, a little breeze off. So down there who knows what the
- 2:32weather potentially could be. Let's start, man, we have some
- 2:40big news that broke last week. I don't think it shocked any of
- 2:44but a quarterback decision was made Brian and I don't think it
- 2:49shocked, anyone Grant Wells, the Marshall transfer was named
- 2:54starting quarterback and I kind of asked you when it happened.
- 2:58I said why now, why? Why not later?
- 3:03There's there's a couple reasons to me.
- 3:05Number one, you want to get last week of Camp, you want to have
- 3:10your starter name? Do you want to kind of get that
- 3:12comfort with the receivers? Getting those extra reps that
- 3:17are true, starter will get and getting those reps with the guys
- 3:21that he's going to be throwing to more consistently once the
- 3:25season starts. And that's kind of the big thing
- 3:26there and we know he's been majority working with the ones
- 3:30but as you kind of wind down its the It's no more like ones.
- 3:34Get equal reps with twos and threes and so forth, you're
- 3:37starting to see okay well for every three or four reps that
- 3:40grants getting you know Jason's probably only getting one or two
- 3:43and you start getting a little bit imbalance there which gives
- 3:47Grant a little bit better opportunity to get more.
- 3:50Acclimated with that offense is still a new offense for him, new
- 3:55offense for even guys that were Veterans of the team last year.
- 3:59So it's important to do that as you get gear into this week.
- 4:02Which is you know, my game week so you have want you close out
- 4:07fall Camp, you got your starter name, you roll in the mud game
- 4:10we can then you get full week one preparation starting next
- 4:14week. Yeah, it's that timing piece and
- 4:16when you explain that to me, it made sense.
- 4:18Because now so it was named Wednesday.
- 4:21So we got obviously he got Friday, he get the scrimmage
- 4:25where it's probably what probably 80/20, if not 85/15,
- 4:30where he was probably resting with the ones.
- 4:32Sunday, Monday. Now they're doing a mock game
- 4:34week likely this week, so it made sense.
- 4:38Something I'm going to tell you something.
- 4:40I don't think Brent prize ever. Going to put Brad Glenn on the
- 4:43podium around Spring ball because Brad Boone was very
- 4:47blunt in his assessment. When he said, oh no, no, no, no
- 4:52Wells had a significant gap on Jason going, and after the
- 4:55spring, where Brent prowl is a little more of a they're
- 4:58battling every battle when was like, And he gave Jason the
- 5:03ultimate compliments that you know, summer workouts, early
- 5:06part of fall Camp, Jason was continuing to push it and got
- 5:10better but he could never catch Grant.
- 5:14So I just thought it was because that was just brutal honesty.
- 5:17And if if you put him on the mic and made us, he say that, and
- 5:21Brent prize to give him the side, I like no, no, there are
- 5:24competing, some nobody has lead. I mean, I appreciate the
- 5:30honesty, I'll be and I appreciate, I mean, there's
- 5:33going to be some coach speak here and there but I appreciate
- 5:34the honesty. Coming out from coach Glenn
- 5:37there. I think that's going to be.
- 5:39I think we kind of saw it right? When we watch the spring game, I
- 5:42mean, I know there was some deficiency with the offensive
- 5:46line that Jason was working with compared to Grant.
- 5:50So, you know, there was some inequality, in terms of the time
- 5:54they were given the cleanliness of the pockets, things like
- 5:59that. At, but I think we can see just
- 6:02with the throws the Christmas that there was, there was a gap
- 6:06there and there was going to be a big gap that that would have
- 6:10to be closed if Jason was going to take that starting spot and I
- 6:13think as a team and as a fan base, I think we're probably
- 6:19happy with the way this worked out, because now you've got the
- 6:23guy that's going to be your potential starter for this year
- 6:27next year, and maybe another year.
- 6:31Pulling the trigger this this season.
- 6:34I think that's important. Long term for this team because
- 6:37the inconsistency at the quarterback position has been a
- 6:41big Bugaboo for the last five years.
- 6:43Yeah. That's been talked about quite a
- 6:45few places. I Know, cover 3 pod, they
- 6:47mentioned one of the hosts are Tom for nearly mention how much
- 6:50he liked Grant Wells and about how the quarterback position had
- 6:54been in flux at tech for so long.
- 6:56A couple other things that That Brad Glenn said was he really
- 7:02like the command that you know, Grant has of the offense at all
- 7:05three levels but especially was very very keen on talking about
- 7:09that deep ball accuracy, which you know what he said?
- 7:15You know, normally like to take two to three shots of quarter
- 7:19and then he's like but what Grant it could be more and
- 7:21you're just like counting isn't that would be 12 if we do more.
- 7:25Are we saying we're going to take if he passes 30 times Are
- 7:29going to take half of them down, fecal it we're getting ready in
- 7:3212 to 15 shots of game. I'll take that I'll take that
- 7:36especially for taking that if we're able to establish that
- 7:38running game and take most of those off a play action where
- 7:41you get a clean pocket and be able to look look deep with a
- 7:44clean pocket. Therefore for Glenn.
- 7:47So for green, I mean, sorry, not for Coach Lynn preferred Grant.
- 7:51I think that's the big thing, man.
- 7:54And I think Glenn wants that clean pocket, but I think it was
- 7:57the other piece, the other two levels because I think we've
- 8:01seen some of the video Grant Wells.
- 8:02He does have a really good deep, all very accurate on it, but
- 8:05understanding now you're at the P5, not the G5 level, those
- 8:10short and intermediate throws are going to be just as
- 8:14important to move the chains. We talk about taking Chopsticks
- 8:19great, but if it's second and 10, Ok, We're going to give an
- 8:22easy intermediate throw. Oh here that's going to get for
- 8:2526 yards. So we are set up in good
- 8:27position that's when I hear that, that's what I feel.
- 8:31Like Brad is saying if we take that shot on first, we feel that
- 8:36Grant can get us with a good pass in to move the sticks
- 8:40range. Yeah, and you know, we talked
- 8:43about it when we had read ciancia from pits pick six
- 8:46previews on here, that looking at last year's offensive metrics
- 8:52You know, we had a lot of big plays but in the middle of that,
- 8:57we didn't do a whole lot of in the past.
- 8:59Okay. So if we weren't going for 30
- 9:03yards, plus we probably weren't moving the ball at all.
- 9:06Nope, and that's something that I think is going to change with
- 9:09this new offense and with this new coaching staff and with
- 9:13Grant Wells pulling the trigger is that short and intermediate
- 9:17accuracy and routes that attack the middle of the defense.
- 9:21It's in routes. Then attack the short
- 9:23intermediate area is outside, the hash marks.
- 9:28I think that's where we're going to see a little bit of
- 9:30difference and that's going to get the quarterback more
- 9:34comfortable with that's going to make the defense creep up where
- 9:37you can take those shots more effectively
- 9:40abso-freakin'-lutely. Last piece I want to mention
- 9:43about something I noticed here in the Brad.
- 9:45Brad Callen interview. He had talked about with Devin
- 9:48Farrell Taj Bullock. He had not been focused on those
- 9:51guys. At all.
- 9:52And basically kind of said, when you're trying to find who you're
- 9:54starting QB, is, that's my focus, not not getting in there.
- 9:58Developing the young guys. But now he mentioned how with
- 10:04this happening, it's almost he can start focusing figuring out
- 10:09who's third team, who scout team and, you know, talked about
- 10:14probably getting to see more of their reps is the sense I got
- 10:18from it. So now I think really, as we get
- 10:21into, you know, for five months from now, if someone leaves,
- 10:27there's that clear indicator because Glenn got more of a
- 10:30chance to actually work with them to see.
- 10:32And give his opinion versus really what's been going on
- 10:36since January. Yeah.
- 10:39And some of this and my mindset is that when he's saying that
- 10:42he's saying that, you know, when he's out there in practice, you
- 10:47know, he's obviously paying attention to those reps, but
- 10:49what he's not doing, he's not going back to the tape after
- 10:52practice and meticulously going through their, their reps during
- 10:57practice to see. All right, what's the difference
- 11:00between him and him? He's not East on that aspect yet
- 11:04he's focused. He was focused more on.
- 11:06You know, is it going to be Grant Wells or Jason Brown and
- 11:09now that he's gotten that he can devote a little bit more of that
- 11:13time that last week after the starter was named this week
- 11:17during my game week, seeing who? That that third guy is going to
- 11:22be working with them to, you know, kind of get them a little
- 11:26more up to speed in terms of, you know, where their
- 11:29deficiencies are in the offense. So they are a little bit more.
- 11:32Paired as we head into the season and then, you know, Tha
- 11:36have that talk with the scout team guy and say, hey you're
- 11:38going to make us better every week by giving us a hundred and
- 11:41ten percent against that defense.
- 11:44So that's when those conversations are happening.
- 11:47Abso-freakin'-lutely. So, quarterback decision made so
- 11:51less to worry about going into the ODU game.
- 11:55That Grant Wells is the starter. I know a lot of people want to
- 11:59Grant to start because of that three years you've got to got
- 12:01three years. Get to learn the system, a lot
- 12:03better, I let slip it over. Let's let's go, let's go down a
- 12:06little bit because kind of the next news kind of sucks few
- 12:10weeks ago. You know, we had the panel on
- 12:13here and David Cunningham had been mentioning dalen, right?
- 12:17Couple times. Well, if you didn't see,
- 12:19downright posted on his Instagram.
- 12:21Few days ago, season-ending surgery, we do not know what
- 12:24specifically it was from the look of it.
- 12:27I'm assuming the lower extremity injury because the picture was
- 12:32Him from about his midsection up, I know.
- 12:36This is a guy you've been home with, you know, basketball
- 12:40player didn't focus on football and really that, senior season
- 12:43really turned it on. And obviously, this is this
- 12:47hurts to death because he was a guy that was battling probably
- 12:49for fourth or fifth, it's fine. Yeah.
- 12:52He was definitely kind of a guy that you were to look at it at
- 12:5545 position. They're probably you know five
- 12:59and he was going to see significant time this year, the
- 13:03way it was lining up for him. So that's a big blow for us.
- 13:07I think that there are some other guys in that room, that
- 13:10can step up and take on that role.
- 13:13But when you have a guy that's already kind of poised to take
- 13:16that role and you lose him during fall Camp, that's always
- 13:19a big blow. So it may take two three weeks
- 13:23into the season. Before we really have that role
- 13:26that fifth spot, kind of ironed out and fleshed out to where we
- 13:30want it to be. Absolutely.
- 13:32Now, another big hit and it was kind of confirmed with the team
- 13:36photo will Stewart. TSL pointed it out, Malachi
- 13:40Thomas, has the walking boot on one of his feet there.
- 13:45For Enterprise, been saying he's week to week.
- 13:47We, I see that. And I know I've said it to a
- 13:51couple people. I'm like, it's got to Hank all
- 13:53the way they're talking about it not a me usually a high ankle.
- 13:57It's going to be week to week. Some guys can take a high ankle
- 14:00get back in three or four weeks some guys and take six to eight
- 14:04but hat, not having him in the way it looks.
- 14:07He's not going to be do to you not having him.
- 14:09For ODU does hurt the Russian attack in the overall attack of
- 14:14the offense. Yeah.
- 14:17And I'd rather I'd rather not have him ODU then against BC or
- 14:21West Virginia. But you know, obviously I'd
- 14:25rather have him on the field. You know, it's gonna you know
- 14:31look like we're going to be looking leaning on Holston and
- 14:33then we've got obviously Keshawn king that's kind of come on this
- 14:37year. We got chance black that's going
- 14:39to do stuff out of the back field.
- 14:42Probably a lot the passing game, so there's guys behind him but
- 14:46you know obviously Thomas I think had the highest upside
- 14:49heading into this season because he I think he was already
- 14:53probably ahead of where Holston was and obviously had room to
- 14:55get even better from there. So, you know, hopefully we'll
- 14:59get him back sooner rather than later.
- 15:01I'm hoping at least West Virginia, maybe at the latest
- 15:04UNC at the absolute latest but hopefully back sometime in
- 15:08September if we can sooner the better for him.
- 15:11You mentioned wholesome. Olsen was nicked, he did not
- 15:13practice Friday but it's one of those things where that was
- 15:16precautionary is what everybody was saying.
- 15:18Like if this was a game day, he would have played.
- 15:21But when you're number one run, Or you're 18 option is out.
- 15:24Don't let the one B option get hurt.
- 15:26I mean, don't let the one being. If there's a question mark, hold
- 15:29about keeping keeping ready to go.
- 15:31Keep him fresh, make sure whatever it is gets full
- 15:35treatment and full rest and bringing back, you know,
- 15:39practicing this week for for my game.
- 15:41We yeah another person who had been out for a couple weeks.
- 15:44Jaden blue you know was advised is going to be back soon.
- 15:48I think he was out there in a non-blue contact, but not doing
- 15:51drills. Oddly similar to Holston you've
- 15:53lost Dallin, right? Who could be your 45 and you've
- 15:57got, you know, you've got Lofton, you've got Caleb,
- 16:02obviously, doing big things, it's again, I could see that as
- 16:05a whole situation. Hey, he could play today, he's
- 16:08our number three or he's our 2 to a 1, b, 1, C, whatever.
- 16:13He's a guy that's going to be on the field, a lot.
- 16:15This is a practice. Yeah, just yeah, we don't all
- 16:18have got we got three receivers that we know are kind of Feel
- 16:22Like A Step Above kind of where everybody else is right.
- 16:25So and he's one of those three. So you don't want to risk having
- 16:28one of those three guys, you know, aggravating something
- 16:32that's more of a nagging thing and it turns into a bigger
- 16:34thing. So, you know, hold him out, get
- 16:37him ready. Like I said, I think it seems
- 16:39like he's gonna be back practicing this week at some
- 16:42point. So, you know, we'll see how how
- 16:45that goes. But at least it seems like we
- 16:48avoided another potential catastrophe there in a room that
- 16:51That has a lot of question marks, right?
- 16:55In a room, we could not avoid catastrophe and then we had to
- 16:59avoid catastrophe, an excuse me, can I take it to a tree
- 17:02sometimes? Alright, another couple rooms
- 17:04that got hit kalai, Lawson out, one to two weeks stinks because
- 17:09he is such an athletic freak. Not having him on the field but
- 17:13it is a room with a lot of people.
- 17:15A lot of people probably going to get playing time to good to
- 17:20hear. Hopefully one to two weeks, you
- 17:21could see his His knee was the knee area was wrapped in the
- 17:24photo and Benji, guys. Nail another room that's deep.
- 17:28He's being evaluated. I do not think I had not seen
- 17:33anything being reported on him yet.
- 17:34Obviously, you'll have media tomorrow, so be paying close
- 17:38attention to that, you know? I would say it sucks more for
- 17:46collide than Benji, because binge, he's going to be fighting
- 17:49multiple guys to get on the field.
- 17:50This year, after already coming off an injury.
- 17:53So that's my opinion sucks for collide more than anybody.
- 17:57Yeah, I think Benji was at a point where he was going to get
- 17:59some reps this year, but I'm pretty sure he was going to be a
- 18:02red shirt player. Whereas Daquan, right is is
- 18:07fighting for spots on the depth chart for the for the full
- 18:11season there. And and he kind of understand
- 18:15that even unless Benji was going out there and completely lighten
- 18:18it up and was Head and Shoulders above.
- 18:20Any other young guys you want to Redshirt him coming off an
- 18:23injury like that. So yeah I think that was always
- 18:26the plan for him. Anyway we'll see if this has any
- 18:29impact on those four games at. He would have had some some
- 18:32playing time in you know, Lawson I think is the big, is the
- 18:36bigger one at least in the short term that is a position where we
- 18:40have pretty good depth. And obviously he's not the
- 18:43Frontline player at that position but he is a guy that
- 18:46was going to see significant number of snaps.
- 18:48I believe just from his skill set, his length and things like
- 18:54that. I think that that was going to
- 18:55get him on the field even if it's just a pass rush type role
- 19:00in the in the 2022 season, he was going to see some snaps so
- 19:03hopefully he can get back out there as soon as possible so we
- 19:08can get him some of that action. Absolutely, if anything catalyze
- 19:12a big chest, Peace that they we know he was getting work.
- 19:14It will, he was getting work at Sam can move around off the S
- 19:18such an athlete and obviously go back to special teams to a guy
- 19:23660. We've seen those box jumps.
- 19:28I hope you can come back and get some PT be used on special
- 19:32teams. All right, let's flip it.
- 19:35There's been some talk obviously last week about position battles
- 19:39and I think left guard, I think it is a war.
- 19:42Or going on right there between Hanson and more because you
- 19:46know, it's been said by coach Brent pry, bring l'amour's going
- 19:51to get playing time this year. Said it, you know, and then he's
- 19:55going to get some PT week. One said, yeah, it's a PT week
- 19:59one and then we're starting to hear six or seven.
- 20:03The used to be just six. Now we're starting to hear that
- 20:07seven number which I know makes me and you both feel
- 20:10significantly better on that offensive line.
- 20:14Absolutely. Yeah, that and that's going to
- 20:15be big and I think that left guard, I said it on the
- 20:18timeline. I think we tweeted out earlier
- 20:20this week or in the last week. Eek, you know, a guy like
- 20:24Braylon more winning that job, only raises the floor and the
- 20:28ceiling for the offensive line this year.
- 20:30Because, you know, we knew that coming in, I was like, okay well
- 20:35who's it going to be is going to be Jesse handsome at that spot,
- 20:38you know, and we were pretty content with Jesse Hanson
- 20:41holding that down. Yep.
- 20:43The fact that brayla more seems to be kind of approaching that
- 20:46level already. It really only having switched
- 20:49positions, you know, late late in the spring.
- 20:53That's big for a true freshman coming in and he's only going to
- 20:56get better from here. So that like I said, that's
- 20:59going to raise the floor in the ceiling for this offensive lines
- 21:02potential this year and it helps the depth because now you got a
- 21:06guy like handsome that is, he doesn't have a whole lot of Game
- 21:11wraps. But he's a guy that has been a
- 21:15power five lineman for a while, has shown some potential that's
- 21:20going to improve your depth and obviously we were somewhat
- 21:24comfortable with him as a starter as we were moving from
- 21:28Spring and fall. Absolutely that.
- 21:30Again that's only going to help that depth are now we're just
- 21:33looking for that that one or two tackles to kind of Step into the
- 21:37kind of fill out this this eight-man rotation That you want
- 21:40to be really be comfortable with your offensive line.
- 21:44I'm hoping that's a guy like Xavier Chaplin or Johnny Garrett
- 21:47somebody, you know. Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:50Hopefully one of those guys as prize mentioned, maybe it's not
- 21:54the beginning but maybe by the time we hit October getting
- 21:57those reps in practice. Working with Scout teams getting
- 22:01in finally. Click, OK, we can now trust this
- 22:05guy to play tackle as for the rest of the season.
- 22:09So somebody Down as much depth as we have.
- 22:13A lot of the linebacker is just fun this year between between my
- 22:17quill and saying, man, I mean, you got Keller last week,
- 22:21running with Dax Jason, Keller, running with the ones and then
- 22:26there's mentioning that there are certain sense where
- 22:29Tisdale's running with the threes on will but he's running
- 22:33one's own Mike. Sometimes you're playing some
- 22:35Mike I mean that room is just it's Lee, I would say that is
- 22:42our most talented room top to bottom in every aspect.
- 22:46Whether it be the mental aspect, the athletic aspect, the
- 22:49versatility aspect, definitely on defense, I'll definitely give
- 22:54you that on defense. I can make argument for tight in
- 22:56on offense but definitely on defense.
- 22:59I'm good with you there and yeah Keller running with the ones is
- 23:04great news because just like I was talking about with more and
- 23:09Hanson If you've got a guy beating out him in trench
- 23:13starter, that's only raising the floor in the ceiling of that
- 23:17potential that linebacker spot right there.
- 23:20Yes. And when you couple that with
- 23:21the mixing and matching of moving Tisdale into mic on some
- 23:24sets and running with Keller, that's improving your
- 23:27athleticism at the position because now you're taking a guy
- 23:31that has the athleticism to play Will and now you're moving into
- 23:34Mike Keller still running that will spot.
- 23:37I mean, that's raising the bar across the Lord, I feel like,
- 23:41you know, we'll see if that translates to better play on the
- 23:43field. Obviously, we haven't seen
- 23:46enough at this point to really make that judgment, and we've
- 23:50only seen it in inter-squad scrimmages.
- 23:53So, you know, we'll see if that translates into wins, but I
- 23:57think that's definitely raising the potential for that room.
- 24:01Both on the, like I said, from a florist and point in the ceiling
- 24:03standpoint, 100%. I cannot wait to see that unit
- 24:07play this season under Prime. Marv because I do think we're
- 24:12going to see a significant step. Alright, let's talk about D end.
- 24:16So it maybe I heard this wrong so I know you listen to it too.
- 24:22Call Nelson. And McRae are pushing starters.
- 24:25What Wei Zhang Who the hell's opposite of garbage?
- 24:27I thought they were fighting for.
- 24:29That spot. Is it?
- 24:30Is it Jay Griff? Is it somebody else?
- 24:33Because either way it's a good thing, it's a good thing to hear
- 24:37those two young guys and once again, it's bronze philosophy.
- 24:40Now that we're talking about these, you know, basically
- 24:43freshmen sophomores pushing for PT the whole group goes up.
- 24:50Yeah, I think that's the big thing and I'm not sure if he was
- 24:52meaning, you know, they were pushing the play level, that
- 24:56Garbutt was bringing to the table, whether they were
- 24:59referencing Griffin. In this situation.
- 25:01As being the entrenched starter at the position or what the
- 25:07situation would be, obviously Griffin was probably You know,
- 25:11the third-best DN that we had last season.
- 25:15So if you're just, you know, moving that into the current
- 25:19roster now that you've got bar know, in the NFL then that would
- 25:24kind of be considered the entrenched starters there, so.
- 25:28But I think the big thing for me is McCrea.
- 25:33McRae coming on in McRae being at least pushing for starting,
- 25:38if not, you know, fully in the too deep at this point, I think
- 25:41is a great thing for this defense.
- 25:44You know, no offense to Eli Adams.
- 25:47I like the craze size and speed combination a lot better than I
- 25:52do. What Adams brings to the table?
- 25:55I think Adams is a good, you know, 3D player.
- 26:00He's a guy that he's played enough reps.
- 26:02Now where you can put him out there, a handful of snaps of
- 26:05game and he can get stuff done for you.
- 26:07He's not the guy that I want out there for a whole series or for
- 26:12multiple series back to back. Absolutely.
- 26:16So again the more you hear the young guys named the the better
- 26:20you feel not only about this season but the future because I
- 26:24do believe this staff would be pushing.
- 26:27Whoever the best player is not necessarily seniority.
- 26:32I was I was hoping we hear something cornerback to is still
- 26:35a mystery between Chapman and Marie.
- 26:39Hopefully we get some info in the next couple days.
- 26:43Either way, I think again, both guys have a lot of playing time
- 26:46out there. You kind of feel comfortable
- 26:49with either one of them, you know, they both, they both can
- 26:52be good players. They both have their flaws as
- 26:55compared to their door in strong who is just seemingly.
- 26:58I think they've said it a couple times just consistent consistent
- 27:00consistent. Yeah I think that's the thing
- 27:03we've seen you know Chapman have good plays in Bad plays, we've
- 27:08seen Marie Marie, seems to be more matchup dependent in terms
- 27:14of his play whereas Chapman. It is more like truly
- 27:18inconsistent at times, but I think Chapman in terms of just
- 27:22pure coverage is the better option there.
- 27:27But, you know, does he have those?
- 27:30Is he able to do enough? And be consistent with it in
- 27:35order to keep Marie off the field at that corner back to I'm
- 27:38hoping so I think Marie is a good rotational type cornerback
- 27:42I don't know if he's a guy that I want out there for long
- 27:46stretches of time at cornerback to so you know and hopefully
- 27:51that room can stay healthy because I feel like there's some
- 27:53potential in that room. I think you got some players
- 27:55there. We just need to make sure that
- 27:58those front front line. Two guys, Chapman and strong,
- 28:03hold up, and play. Well and consistent.
- 28:05Absolutely. All right, last piece we're in
- 28:08about position battles. We had already talked about ride
- 28:10receiver, four and five and a half gallon, right?
- 28:12Would be pushing for that and then he goes down.
- 28:15Jaden blue goes down and it was a couple guys getting a lot of
- 28:20compliments and Stephen Gosnell and Christian Moss had been
- 28:24stepping up lately. Again you love to hear it.
- 28:27The transfer from UNC and they you know redshirt freshman
- 28:32getting praise from the Coaches. And, you know, is it just the
- 28:35same old coach speak? Maybe, maybe we don't see them a
- 28:38game this year. But again, names are getting
- 28:44mentioned in that. Always is a big thing.
- 28:48Yeah, Gosnell Mall stepping up. You know, we've heard of Keshawn
- 28:51King is now getting some touches that slot and flankers.
- 28:55So that's that's pretty big as well that we're finally finally
- 29:01Using that actual position flexibility to our advantage in
- 29:06getting guys, touches and Reps in practice at places that they
- 29:10can be a weapon on the field. So, that's good to hear.
- 29:16And we've heard obviously there's a lot of Buzz about
- 29:20Daquan, right? I know, I'm, I'm singing the
- 29:22Praises a lot, and I'm going to keep singing them until I'm
- 29:25born, 18 months with a 14-month love affair with daikon, right?
- 29:28And it's until I see something that tells me otherwise.
- 29:31As I'm going to keep helping this kid up because nothing I've
- 29:34heard has shaken me off. What I saw on tape and what I've
- 29:39seen otherwise, so I'm going to keep riding it.
- 29:43I think he's a guy that's going to help us in kind of that joker
- 29:48tight in position. And also a guy that could be
- 29:51doing some of the type of things that Bucky Hodges did for us,
- 29:55you know, when he was here out the gate and then we'll see how
- 30:01he Transitions into that that full-time tight enroll as his
- 30:04career goes along. But He's got potential to do
- 30:08some tight end duties, some wide receiver duties in year one.
- 30:11And I think he's going to be a guy that right out the gate is
- 30:15going to be playing significance.
- 30:17Nets for us on the offense in your one.
- 30:20I think I think you're right especially with some folks
- 30:22getting hurt and obviously the way you have seen Tyler Boeing
- 30:27used tight ends. I think it's very likely that he
- 30:29he doesn't, he plays me. Before and he gets that shirt
- 30:33burned. Let's talk about this.
- 30:36Kind of last piece of current going on with the tech team or
- 30:41something related to Tech in that is the ODU offensive
- 30:45coordinator. Dave, had a nude resigned three
- 30:49weeks before the kickoff of the game.
- 30:53Dave, Pat nude had previously last three seasons been down at
- 30:57Georgia, Tech with Jeff Collins. Obviously we saw Them last year.
- 31:02One down there. Also, you something I can
- 31:06remember two years ago. Brian, you talking about Georgia
- 31:08Tech and they were kind of a power smash offense.
- 31:12So going down to Ricky Ronnie that makes sense.
- 31:15But when you've had the guy, who's been in the quarterbacks a
- 31:17year, who's been calling the please who's been designing, and
- 31:21he's gone. I mean, I'm not complaining but
- 31:27that is a uphill climb even more for For ODU versus what
- 31:35seemingly Brent price trying to get to be an angry Virginia Tech
- 31:38Team. Yeah.
- 31:40I mean now you've got Ricky Ronnie everywhere.
- 31:42Essentially three hats at least in the short term, right?
- 31:47So he's now the head coach. He's the de facto offensive
- 31:50coordinator and he's now the de facto quarterbacks coach, that's
- 31:55a big fucking deal, right? You two weeks before three weeks
- 31:59before the season, whatever it was when he Uptown and I mean, I
- 32:03don't want to speculate too much but I've heard this might have
- 32:05been a similar to the Oklahoma situation, but oh, really?
- 32:10That's the Whispers. I am hearing it is not a public
- 32:15situation so I will not elaborate further.
- 32:18But yeah. Okay.
- 32:21But it's over to you so it doesn't get quite the sprout.
- 32:25A lot of Nationals ODU, it's not going to get the run as it would
- 32:31somewhere else. So again for us to me, it's even
- 32:36more. So for someone like Tyler
- 32:38bowing, if he's and Brent, it's Ricky Ronnie's brain.
- 32:41Now, it's not days. Brain, its Ricky Ronnie's brain.
- 32:44So that's a big thing. It's going to be really
- 32:46interesting to see. How they look?
- 32:50I'll pensively that night. All right, let's flip this one
- 32:54because this is one that sort of got some people riled up.
- 32:59Yes, the next 10 years. The out of conference schedule
- 33:04is not pretty even less. Pretty would be why you going
- 33:07off the schedule. Just so, if you haven't seen it,
- 33:14David Cunningham, put this out there back about August 17th.
- 33:20Next year. ODU, Purdue at Rutgers at
- 33:23Marshall. First of all, a trucker's at
- 33:24Marshall, we need to quit doing that.
- 33:26I know we talked about it. The panel's got to be stopped
- 33:2920:24. Write this one down at
- 33:31Vanderbilt Marshall at ODU. Again, we've got to stop it in
- 33:35Rutgers 2025. Finally, we get a Chick-fil-A
- 33:39kick off with South Carolina down in Atlanta van dod, ujm,
- 33:42you I mean, Arizona Wisconsin's on the schedule and like 80, I
- 33:49mean, It doesn't start looking decent again until 2030. 2030
- 34:00and even then it's not necessarily blowing your skirt
- 34:03up. It's just hey, it's good enough,
- 34:06it's good enough. What's the point that you've
- 34:08made? Several times big guy, why did
- 34:11we get such big games in the 2002 2010's?
- 34:15Why are we getting Ohio State? Why are we getting Alabama?
- 34:18Why are we getting USC? It's that whole well, there are
- 34:22top 20 team. So if we lose to them, it's not
- 34:26the end of the world. If we beat them it's a resume
- 34:30checkmark for us and and what's happened really since 2012 and
- 34:37over the last 10 years, we've had to really yet.
- 34:43We are getting close map to next Friday.
- 34:45Yes, yes, it's getting there. We've had.
- 34:50One really good season to okay Seasons.
- 34:54Bunch of mediocre season to ship seasons.
- 34:58And your big teams do not want to play you.
- 35:00When that is your track record, you have to start lower and
- 35:03that's where we are. Right now, we are bad enough.
- 35:08We're beating us doesn't help them and we're not, we're just
- 35:12good enough. We're losing to us, hurts them
- 35:15pretty bad. Exactly.
- 35:17There's a risk to losing to us. So that's why no one wants to
- 35:20play there. We're just risky enough, where
- 35:24it's a, it's a, it's a bad loss and we're, we're not helping
- 35:27them. If they go come down here and
- 35:29waxes. So more bodies nobody wants to
- 35:33place right now, exactly more of this Story is win more games and
- 35:39you become more attractive. When you win more games, you get
- 35:43to tell Marshall 02, you know, we're never coming to your
- 35:45place, you will always come here.
- 35:47You always drive here. We're never coming to your
- 35:49place. Yeah, I'm kind of sick of the
- 35:52driving at ODU and driving to Lynchburg, like we grew up in
- 35:57our from Lynchburg, we go to fucking Lynchburg, and I don't
- 35:59want to, I want to play the fucking game, they're all right.
- 36:06All right, so obviously end of last week.
- 36:10Brian, the Big Ten multi Network deal.
- 36:13Rolls out seven billion over seven years with an option to go
- 36:18up to 10 depending on if they add additional teams, I'm sure
- 36:22there's some contract language in there about what additional
- 36:24teams, they would need to add to get to that 10 million roughly.
- 36:28You do the math. It's a billion dollars a year
- 36:30with the 16 Team league. It's roughly probably right
- 36:33about 70 million. And then obviously on top of
- 36:37some other Deals. They have you're looking at
- 36:39probably close to 80 to 90 million per team.
- 36:42The most interesting piece is ESPN is shut out completely.
- 36:47Right. Yep.
- 36:50And they're going to be having a big game at 12.
- 36:52A big game at 3:30 on CBS in a big night game on NBC.
- 37:00Can we be one of the teams that you know, gets added to this?
- 37:04Because that is a ton of money and in reality, I think what's
- 37:10going to happen quickly and you're going to see it, you're
- 37:13going to have basically. Five teams are going to get
- 37:18those slots consistently. It's going to be Ohio State.
- 37:22It's going to be Michigan. It's going to be Penn State.
- 37:24It's going to be Wisconsin. And then maybe you can say six
- 37:26with At Michigan State, that's it Rutgers, Rutgers, Maryland
- 37:32will never be on the 330, it CBS or the moon, or the 7:30 night
- 37:37game, they will be moved to Peacock or Big Ten Network.
- 37:41They're getting flexed out. Did the did the size of the deal
- 37:46and then how it broke down shock you in any way.
- 37:50I'd say how it broke down, didn't shock me as much as the
- 37:52size. I think the size is I think a
- 37:55little bit more than what we thought was going to be coming.
- 38:00Good for them and I think, you know, obviously adding the
- 38:05team's they're adding is only helping that it's helping their
- 38:10negotiation on that side of things. but, I think how it's
- 38:17structured is good for them. And I think they kind of made
- 38:20the play of Hey, this could lure Notre Dame, this could lure.
- 38:27Some of the other Pac-12 markets.
- 38:29If we decide to go higher, go go, you know aim towards 20s?
- 38:32I think they're looking. I think they're looking a little
- 38:37bit forward in this deal as well but I think at the same time I
- 38:44don't think anything in this deal is moving the needle for
- 38:48Notre Dame. And I think that's, that's
- 38:50still, that's still the biggest domino to fall before.
- 38:55I think some bigger things start happening, long term.
- 38:58Yeah. You know, big things right now
- 39:01is, you know, I was told you to Dad conversation, it's looking
- 39:05like, more or less for the ACC to break up, you're looking at
- 39:0875%, there's not 75 percent of teens who's going to get offered
- 39:12elsewhere. So, it's a pipe dream for the
- 39:14ACC to disband and for potentially land in the SEC or
- 39:18potentially, the Big Ten. And let's grant of rights are
- 39:22broken or there's some other Other factors that come into
- 39:25play, but in that thing, there's going to have to be a legal
- 39:30challenge first. If there's a legal challenge,
- 39:32then all bets are off especially if that legal challenges is
- 39:35successful, but I think barring a legal challenge for good or
- 39:40ill. We're riding with the ACC for a
- 39:43while. Yeah, only upside now is, and
- 39:47you mentioned this, a few weeks ago, ESPN had money set aside
- 39:52for this, right? Yeah, how much can the ACC get
- 39:57out of it? How much additional can they get
- 40:00out of it to basically go from 38 million?
- 40:03I think it will 36.7 this year to that 45 50 million where
- 40:08you're still behind, but you're not as far behind.
- 40:13So how much can they get out of it?
- 40:15Or does ESPN take the money and put it back somewhere else?
- 40:18And obviously SEC is going to get more in a few years.
- 40:21But can the ACC or the Big 12 Pride additional money out of
- 40:25ESPN because now, ACC is going to probably get better slots.
- 40:33Right between could at least work and more consistent slots.
- 40:36Yeah, we're consistent slot because you've always got ABC
- 40:39ESPN ESPN2, then you get into the SP and you and then the
- 40:44Network's themselves. So, is it something where, you
- 40:48know, the ABCs get an ABC game versus the ESPN2 game of the
- 40:52ACC, networking plenty games to go around for all for all
- 40:57parties involved. You know?
- 40:58Sixteen fourteen teams roughly, that's seven games a week.
- 41:02So hopefully, Just better, slots showing increased viewers, but
- 41:07we'll see. I think the problem we're
- 41:09seeing. I think in, I mean, I looked at
- 41:11some of the, the numbers in terms of like most-watched,
- 41:17Teams with the with the, with the highest ratings.
- 41:20Virginia Tech got hurt a lot last year with ACC fucking
- 41:23Network. Fuck them.
- 41:25Fuck you put you put definitely the biggest game of the two
- 41:29biggest games of the year on there by putting Notre Dame and
- 41:34putting my any another. That's the thing we're trying to
- 41:37lure people in but when you're not getting Nielsen ratings,
- 41:41where you can say, Hey, listen, we played Notre Dame like that
- 41:43ABC game a few years ago, I think it was like 4.1.
- 41:46One are pretty good number for a Saturday night game, and now
- 41:50you're putting that game on the SEC network that doesn't get
- 41:55rated. So, you don't know how many
- 41:56people are actually doing that game.
- 41:59That's where, you know, if you're, if you're Jim Phillips,
- 42:03the one thing you better be slinging is saying you're going
- 42:06to put our crap games on there. You're not putting FSU on there,
- 42:09you're not putting Clemson. You're not putting Miami, not
- 42:11putting Tech. You're not putting Carolina,
- 42:12you're not putting state. You put waking pit on there.
- 42:16The you don't put the teams that draw eyes to our conference.
- 42:22That's--yeah that's-- and that's--.
- 42:23That's the rate. They're right.
- 42:25That mean, and I agree 100% with Curtis on that getting us on a
- 42:29sec Network. Especially those Marquee games
- 42:31that are going to draw eyes. You know, we were still dealing
- 42:35with situation where so many in the primary Market didn't have
- 42:40her in terms of coverage, didn't have it.
- 42:43It is, there are so many TVs in the state of Virginia in parts
- 42:50of Maryland that are Atlantic jority, majority Comcast homes.
- 42:56Well, basically thing about this it's really Pennsylvania down in
- 42:59the South Carolina I've got family in South Carolina.
- 43:02They have Comcast. So, I mean, North Carolina is
- 43:06chartered Charter primarily but I mean, yeah, once you get back
- 43:10into South Carolina, Xfinity picks back in there.
- 43:12So big, big, big Morgan, this type.
- 43:14So we'll get a just stop that or I can go for trust me.
- 43:19Y'all don't get to hear the Rams beforehand when Brian.
- 43:22These are the these are the filter drancy.
- 43:24The are ones that have been, you know, we've trimmed them down.
- 43:27We focused on well, over the last Last few weeks Brian.
- 43:32We did not talk about this last week because we had such a two
- 43:35weeks ago, we had our panel on but hope he's got another commit
- 43:40Hokies currently. Sending 36 composite 33, 24/7,
- 43:44young man out of Ontario, Canada, Ishmael Finn later, 64
- 43:50230, low 3, star has kind of some views from Arizona state
- 43:57with Central Michigan, Have you had a chance where there any
- 44:01tape out there on this guy from Canada?
- 44:04Yeah, there's there's some tape out there and I mean you know,
- 44:08I'm not trying to sell a false bill of goods here but the tape
- 44:13is better than the ranking but it's still not a needle mover if
- 44:18that makes sense. He's an 82.
- 44:21He said I'm going to hit him. I'd say if I was going 24/7 I'd
- 44:25be like 83-84. I mean solid but But
- 44:29unspectacular, but I think the size and and things is what
- 44:34standing out, and I think that's the thing that could be molded
- 44:37into something better down the road, but this is definitely a
- 44:40developmental type player. It's not somebody that's going
- 44:43to jump off the page or move any needle in terms of recruiting
- 44:47perception, 64 230. You can't, you know, that's that
- 44:51is a great body for a defensive end.
- 44:54And I felt like he camped with us.
- 44:59Let me see. I feel like he camped with us
- 45:03and they probably measure the variables somewhere.
- 45:07I'm pretty. I think he did camp, and they
- 45:09did say his measurables were verified select like legit, and
- 45:13that's probably why they offered him later as we're getting into
- 45:16this cycle. You know, we've got currently
- 45:1818, I think we get a lot more. They showed the senior picture,
- 45:21and I think I counted 48 guys on scholarship seniors, this year,
- 45:26I think we're targeting 26. He seven guys, this year.
- 45:29So thing quite a number. Yeah, I think that number and
- 45:32you kind of leave yourself a little wiggle room for a
- 45:34potential transfer. If a couple more guys, transfer
- 45:37out larger transfer classes. So again, got one more guy there
- 45:40in the boat, good to hear that. All right.
- 45:44So before we get into our main topic of giving y'all are
- 45:48predictions for this season, we are going to take a quick pause

- 46:14Now back to the episode All right, so we did this last year.
- 46:18It's a lot of fun to do fun exercise.
- 46:23Everybody out there and we've already had a couple people put
- 46:26their records up for the year. Feel free to chime in will show
- 46:30them at the end, but we are going to go game by game records
- 46:34for this season. Now, there is a disclaimer These
- 46:40are our ceilings. Okay, this is our ceilings And
- 46:46we want to put that out there in case someone so y'all.
- 46:48So they wouldn't engage. Oh that's our ceiling.
- 46:50That's we're basically saying nobody gets hurt Malachi Thomas
- 46:54is their game 1. Kalaallisut is their game 1 and
- 46:57we have the most unbelievable. Football, season injury-wise in
- 47:01the history of football. And a couple things.
- 47:04Bounce our way and key games. There you go.
- 47:09So, no further. Again, we're going to get into a
- 47:11lot more detail. With last week, we've been
- 47:14reading and studying and prize been looking at some tape
- 47:17already, but let's start with ODU, Brian.
- 47:20What do you say there? For me, this is Virginia Tech
- 47:24all the way. I know I said it on the panel, I
- 47:28think we need to go out there and crush them make this a over
- 47:31by halftime situation. I think this is our chance to
- 47:37send a message that this team is not only better than what a lot
- 47:42of folks out there thinking they are.
- 47:45But sending a message in terms of the state, this is our state
- 47:49again. We should even be in Norfolk for
- 47:53this fucking game, but since we made the trip, we're going to
- 47:57get an ass whoopin while we're down there.
- 47:59Yeah, but before we head home, we're going to get one in before
- 48:02you head home. And I'm me Broader lockstep with
- 48:04this one. I am fully Virginia Tech on this
- 48:08one. They need to make the statement.
- 48:10They need to make, and I set it on a pan, I'll say it again.
- 48:13They need to make that Hundred-Foot walk back to ODU
- 48:16locker room. The most miserable walk of those
- 48:19kids lives and that they never want to see maroon and orange
- 48:23come back to that field. Again, to the point where the
- 48:26Ada has to cancel the series. And I think there's some guys on
- 48:30this team from going from 20. From 2018 who played going down
- 48:36there, probably with a bitter taste in their mouth.
- 48:38So I really like that. So I'm definitely going to be
- 48:41going VT. Takes one out the gate.
- 48:43We will be previewing this game next week.
- 48:48Alright, Bronn first home game for Brent Pride night game.
- 48:52Unfortunately, on the ACC Network, I get the ACC Network.
- 48:57Luckily, yeah, you throw your hands up its PC so it's not the
- 49:01big one although that game last. last year Friday pulled almost 2
- 49:05billion people on a frickin Friday night in mid-october so
- 49:11maybe it should be moved to a different network and maybe it
- 49:15will but that stuff pretty said but anyway This is one of those
- 49:20tougher ones in. As I was going through it, they
- 49:23got Djokovic going back half Li second year.
- 49:27They lost a lot of Their Own Line, but I'm sitting here and
- 49:31just thinking of that atmosphere that's going to be there in lane
- 49:35and I know you will be there. Bought us tickets this week did
- 49:39calendar cleared out, so mr. Siegel will definitely be there,
- 49:44but the, the atmosphere the electricity in the air a night
- 49:48game, which means people are going to be getting out to the
- 49:51parking, lots 7:00 8:00 in the morning.
- 49:54Going all day. I think taking when this will
- 49:58comfortably, when I say comfortably, I'm talking to
- 50:01scores at the end, something, when I get there, I'll say it,
- 50:04but I think Tech wins this one comfortably but not so
- 50:09comfortable. We're not like saying in the
- 50:11fourth quarter, put two more touchdowns on it because I don't
- 50:13want anything stupid to happen. Yeah, I'm not feeling quite as
- 50:18comfortable as you are about this in terms of the Gap in the
- 50:21score, but I definitely think we can pull this one out.
- 50:25My thing is, is that that Offensive line is banged up,
- 50:28it's still early in the season, they lost a lot of players from
- 50:32last year's team. I think this attacking Brent
- 50:36Pride defense will get after jerkin Vic early and I think
- 50:41that's the difference. It was the difference when we
- 50:43played in 2020. Yep.
- 50:45When we forced a bunch of turnovers early, absolute going
- 50:49to be something similar. I don't know if we'll get quite
- 50:51the bounces from those turnovers that we got then, but I think we
- 50:54put enough pressure on them early where we hold on for it
- 50:59abso-freakin'-lutely. Alright, Braun.
- 51:05We just say this one, the Whopper game Virginia Tech and
- 51:11in the words of Don, be 50 Burger, 50 smash them crush
- 51:16them. I won't 60.
- 51:18I will, I won't, you know what, Frank Beamer always kind of a
- 51:22nice guy. Wouldn't run up the score.
- 51:24I hope Britt prai has a little more but in him and it's like,
- 51:2756. Nothing in the third quarter,
- 51:29I'm trying to get to 70. I want a squirrel stop these
- 51:33guys. I'll pull my starters but I'm
- 51:37still running my offense. Exactly.
- 51:40I am trying to continue, I'll pull my starters but I'm still
- 51:43sending six on third down and long.
- 51:48So let's do a check-in 3 and 0 through the first three games,
- 51:51where we optimistic. Well, it's pretty seasoned if
- 51:54you're not optimistic, that's the rough fan life you have
- 51:58there, got to be a bitch or something.
- 52:00All right, so big one, Thursday night, Right.
- 52:06Blacksburg West Virginia, Black Diamond Trophy and I think
- 52:09someone said it's like going to be the 30th or maybe the 25th
- 52:13anniversary. It's going to be an anniversary
- 52:15of the first Thursday night game.
- 52:17Virginia Tech ever hosted so big, you're already people are
- 52:21already talking about going in taking a full weekend that the
- 52:27BC game was electric, this one's going to get downright obnoxious
- 52:31and insane because I always go back.
- 52:36Go find it was it 2,000? The Andre Davis three touchdown
- 52:41game, three different ways in the Wayne board block.
- 52:46Jesus, I think they seriously have a chance to get Fowler on
- 52:49this one and with West Virginia, in their back in being so bad,
- 52:53and I know we're going to look more in detail.
- 52:55A lot of these games and learning a new offense and going
- 52:58to sort of to a true are a and they're going to be four games
- 53:04in only three games in. I'm going to say we take the
- 53:08diamond trophy back here Braun. I'm actually with you and I'm
- 53:13basing it on a few things. I'm basing it on the The fact
- 53:16that, you know, we were this damn close literally to taking
- 53:20it back at their house last year, like, four times that
- 53:23close one time for ya and ya. I know they got JT Daniel, but
- 53:28they haven't named a starter yet.
- 53:30This is pretty late. I don't know if they're playing
- 53:32games with ship with pit on this or what they're doing at games
- 53:37at nine days, they better. But they have they have not been
- 53:39able to starter yet, so if if that's for real reasons and not
- 53:45for gamesmanship, Ship. That's got to be concerning
- 53:47because I think they were leaning pretty heavy on Daniels
- 53:50being the guy. So if he's not actually went out
- 53:54there and won that job, that's got to be concerning.
- 53:57And then you just couple that with what they lost in the
- 54:00secondary and the transfer portal.
- 54:03I think there's a lot of opportunities to score more
- 54:05points this year, on them. Yeah, and I think if we can do
- 54:08that, I don't have any confidence that they're going to
- 54:11be significantly better on offense.
- 54:14Nah, so I think I think we're able to pull it out.
- 54:17We're at home. It's a night game.
- 54:19It's in Lane. It's that attersee here.
- 54:22It's Thursday. I think there's just there's too
- 54:25much. I think lining up against them
- 54:27both historically and on the field that I think we can pull
- 54:31that one out with you. All right, Brian.
- 54:35So next game again, this is kind of big Meaning of The Gauntlet
- 54:40with West, Virginia, game, travel down to North Carolina.
- 54:44The next Saturday, what are you feeling on this one?
- 54:50This one I've got, I've got UNC pulling it out.
- 54:55I know they've got a lot of question marks at quarterback.
- 54:57They just named their starter May is took that job correctly.
- 55:02Yeah. I think that's, that's probably
- 55:05what we expected heading into the season.
- 55:07I think he was kind of I think the guy that was going to be the
- 55:10next man up he's one that job I think I mean he's a quality
- 55:14player kind of a bid for Star type Talent you know I think
- 55:20they get things going a little bit better on offense.
- 55:22I think they're improved enough. On defense.
- 55:28And we're not playing in Blacksburg on opening night with
- 55:32that atmosphere. So I think you don't get the
- 55:34Boost that we saw last year from that.
- 55:39So I think they add you doubt. I think it's a close one.
- 55:42I hate picking UNC. I don't think.
- 55:45I think anybody that's listen to me on this show understands my
- 55:51level of hatred for UNC so but There's enough factors there
- 55:59that are unknown for us and enough factors for them that
- 56:02work in their favor. It's hard for me to in good
- 56:05conscience, not pick them. So, that's where I'm at.
- 56:08Well, whether it's bad, conscience, maroon glasses,
- 56:11whatever. I'm picking Tech in this game.
- 56:13And I think it is because of Drake May being a first year
- 56:17stronger. Yep, that'll be his fourth game.
- 56:20But right now they're getting into true, freshman is running
- 56:23backs. No one has really come out.
- 56:25Other than Josh Downs. At the receiver room.
- 56:28The offensive line has continued to have struggles.
- 56:31The defense at game that we always talked about it.
- 56:34I can remember being on here almost a year ago talking about
- 56:37if we just had some decent frickin offensive play calls.
- 56:39We could have hung over 30 on that defense last year without
- 56:42breathing and I don't think they're going to take that big
- 56:45of a step under chizik. I think they are what they are.
- 56:49And when you're going from that, 245 to a base for three Lot of
- 56:54Things Different. You talk about guys putting
- 56:56their hands in the dirt not as confusing schemes.
- 56:59So I think that's where we go and I think take pulls this one
- 57:02out and I think it's going to probably be because of a Young
- 57:06quarterback. Probably truly facing his first
- 57:11defense that is going to just attack and attack and attack and
- 57:16not pull anything back you know because you know let's take a
- 57:20Look real quick just so I can feel better about myself.
- 57:27They've got Notre Dame the week before.
- 57:32Then they had its their FAMU Appalachian State, which they
- 57:37could be, that they could lose that game.
- 57:40And they can lose to towards. They could come in one and
- 57:42three. And I think if you do that to a
- 57:45Young quarterback, it will be shattered and then have a
- 57:48defense is ready to feast and let's just go history.
- 57:53They're foreign, what's four and 14?
- 57:59Since they've started playing this every year since 2004.
- 58:02Yeah, I'd we are historically very good against them, all
- 58:06right. Even in the evening down years,
- 58:07we play UNC. Well, we do.
- 58:11And if we just started the right quarterback in 2020, we had to
- 58:14beat them then to. Yes, we would have, yes, we
- 58:16would have in that shootout. All right.
- 58:19So I'm at 5 and 0 and you're at four and one, am I going to do
- 58:21something stupid? He's on the stupid here.
- 58:25Are you tell me? All right, so the next game is
- 58:32at wonderful. What used to be called Heinz
- 58:35Field in the 8,000. People that occupy it for the
- 58:40worst home atmosphere. Oh, am I being real?
- 58:45The worst home atmosphere? Yeah, it's awful college sports,
- 58:50the Pitt Panthers, And for the first time I do pick against our
- 58:55Hokies, I think 80 atmosphere is one thing.
- 58:59If you're going into a hostile environment and Carolina can get
- 59:02a little loud, it's louder and petal ever be.
- 59:06You can get up a little bit so it's going to, you're going to
- 59:09go there, it's not going to be laughs.
- 59:11I'm gonna be raucous and they have just a really good
- 59:14defensive line and I think with the questions we have on our
- 59:17offensive line, at this point we're five games in, you
- 59:20probably got some Nicks and bumps maybe some backups
- 59:23playing. I do think this one write this
- 59:27down and I'll hope I'm hoping my prediction is when we get there
- 59:31exactly like it. I think it's going to be an
- 59:33ugly. Absolute Freaking this fight.
- 59:37It's not gonna be a bunch of guns.
- 59:38It's going to be a fist fight in the trenches, and it's going to
- 59:41get ugly. And I do think the Hokies will
- 59:44hang, but I just think that defense will get us in the end.
- 59:51Yeah, I mean whether aside I think it's going to be almost
- 59:53like an opposite of what we saw when we were at that at Budds
- 59:57last game in 2019, it's going to be kind of that that tight
- 1:00:01asshole game ball and I think, unfortunately because the pitch
- 1:00:07trenches, they are more experienced in the trenches than
- 1:00:11we are, especially on the defensive line.
- 1:00:14Think they've got enough on the back end, to keep us honest and
- 1:00:19I think they're going to end up pulling the wind there, but I
- 1:00:21don't, I don't think they're going to run away with it.
- 1:00:23This isn't going to be those ugly pit.
- 1:00:26Blowouts that we've seen in recent memory last year and back
- 1:00:30in 1828, seven. And what 56:23 something like
- 1:00:34that. Yeah I think this is going to be
- 1:00:37a lot more of a truth back street brawl.
- 1:00:41All right, let's flip next run. We've got Miami coming into
- 1:00:46town. It's going to be a crisp October
- 1:00:49day mid-october. Miami.
- 1:00:53Highly ranked most people picking them, the wind, the
- 1:00:55coastal Van Dyke, getting a ton of Love.
- 1:00:58Crystal ball, getting a tunnel of their recruiting flying off.
- 1:01:01Looks like they're about to get a new state in which I really
- 1:01:03hope they do put a stadium closer to where the campus is
- 1:01:07the Orange Bowl. We've talked with divide big
- 1:01:10man, loved playing their love beating them there.
- 1:01:13I hope they get something that's similar to that because that had
- 1:01:16a great atmosphere. I can remember watching those
- 1:01:18games when we were younger, but let's flip this one in
- 1:01:21Blacksburg. What do you Say on this one
- 1:01:23brand. Love is in Blacksburg but I hate
- 1:01:27that. It's a team that I think finally
- 1:01:29has found the leadership to go with the recruiting that they've
- 1:01:34been doing, you know really I mean for a long time, right?
- 1:01:39They've always had players. They've always had dudes.
- 1:01:42I think they finally got the right combination of Coach.
- 1:01:45Again I think this is going to be the team.
- 1:01:49That's going to be the measuring stick along with Clemson for
- 1:01:52Virginia Tech success going forward.
- 1:01:54Forward. I don't think we win this one,
- 1:01:57but I think this is a game that if we can kind of stick around
- 1:02:00and hang around and make it ugly and stick there with it, to the
- 1:02:05end, that's going to say, something about this team and
- 1:02:08kind of put us in a good footing going forward.
- 1:02:10But I don't think we have the, the horses to win this one.
- 1:02:13Yeah, and I mentioned on the panel last, we could, you know,
- 1:02:17with this game if you beat them, great, I can't see us doing
- 1:02:21that, not right now. They do have a lot of talent
- 1:02:23like you said. The crystal ball leadership, a
- 1:02:27good quarterback, they have the talent there to beat us, but
- 1:02:32it's the measuring stick game. If you get in there and you make
- 1:02:36it a war for four quarters and even if they beat you, everybody
- 1:02:40looks at you again, right? Well, this team is supposed to
- 1:02:43be rebuilding and they're already.
- 1:02:45They're fighting one of the best in the conference to the end.
- 1:02:47And they're forcing them to barely get a squeaker on the
- 1:02:51road. That's what it is to me.
- 1:02:53Miami wins the game. Game but this is the game that
- 1:02:56if you tell me, you know, six months or four months from now
- 1:03:01we're talking about the game of the year, it's to me it could be
- 1:03:04this one. All right.
- 1:03:07So then we get a bye week on the week of the 22nd.
- 1:03:11And when we get a trip down to Raleigh on a Thursday night.
- 1:03:15ESPN, another Thursday night game with NC State.
- 1:03:21I hope people don't hate me for this, but it's NC State and some
- 1:03:25people like nothing. Remember of, for always painful
- 1:03:29enough for remember that game and that we could not get above
- 1:03:3313 points. I know they had a good defense.
- 1:03:37But I think this year they're just too balanced and so.
- 1:03:41So think about the losses so far, I have probably the best
- 1:03:44defense. We're going to play, probably
- 1:03:46the best offense, we're going to play and probably the best
- 1:03:48balanced team. We're going to play with
- 1:03:50offensive weapons. Good on defense.
- 1:03:52I think we drop in Sea State. I don't think this will be a
- 1:03:56measure stick game. I think it will be a good game.
- 1:03:59Just knowing David orange style and Brent price style.
- 1:04:02But I think because they are loaded with a lot of Older
- 1:04:06folks. Good quarterback.
- 1:04:07I think they do get us. Yeah, I agree with you.
- 1:04:11I think, I think they definitely take us down.
- 1:04:13I don't think it's a blowout, but I do think it's one of those
- 1:04:16games where NC State probably handles us, start to finish.
- 1:04:21It kind of keeps us at arm's, length, start to finish, just
- 1:04:25because of their bounds. Like you said, I think they've
- 1:04:27got a really good defense, especially in the trenches and
- 1:04:30they have weapons on offense, especially the guy that's
- 1:04:34pulling the trigger at quarterback.
- 1:04:37I think that's just going to be a little too much for us to
- 1:04:39overcome. I think that's a game where if
- 1:04:42we want to have the potential to win that game.
- 1:04:44We've got a strike early, get ahead, get a lead and make them
- 1:04:50have to get out of their game plan.
- 1:04:53And I don't think we're able to do that.
- 1:04:54So I think that's why we're going to.
- 1:04:55We're going to lose that one. Yeah, I think with the NC State
- 1:04:58game as not compared to the Pittsburgh or Miami game.
- 1:05:01I think the pit NC State game. We have to play our best a
- 1:05:06football game. I think that, you know, can we
- 1:05:09can we beat Miami and pit? Yeah, I don't think we can.
- 1:05:12I don't think we have to play our best football games, those
- 1:05:14games to pull wins. NC State's just to balance to
- 1:05:18not be on and every facet. All right, Braun.
- 1:05:21So you're the four-game losing streak.
- 1:05:24I'm at a three-game losing streak and the first week,
- 1:05:28November 5th. Remember, remember the fifth of
- 1:05:31November Georgia Tech roles in Tulane Stadium.
- 1:05:35What do you think on this one? I think that they're about to
- 1:05:41look like the cat's V for Vendetta killed on.
- 1:05:45Yeah, I think Georgia Tech some get wax this game.
- 1:05:48I think Jeff Collins is going to already have his pants Ablaze
- 1:05:53from that Hot Seat by this point in the season and this is going
- 1:05:57to maybe be the one that pushes them over the edge and we get a
- 1:06:02mid-november firing like we had with with went a last year.
- 1:06:06So Yeah, Ron takes GT. I'm right there.
- 1:06:10That that place is a train wreck right now.
- 1:06:12So many guys leaving. What was it that some of the
- 1:06:17classes from three years ago aren't even in there too deep?
- 1:06:22That's that's bad. That's yeah.
- 1:06:24I mean that's bad evaluation and then development.
- 1:06:28They're not developing and add to that.
- 1:06:32Like at some point. They, you know, you had that you
- 1:06:35had the height recruiting classes.
- 1:06:36And now, none of those guys are playing.
- 1:06:38They're going with the guys that were playing a Transformer.
- 1:06:43So yeah, I think that's a That's a big one.
- 1:06:47I think, I think, I think with you that we smash them, I think
- 1:06:50we smash them. I think that's an ugly game.
- 1:06:52I think after a losing streak to, I think we make it.
- 1:06:56We make an example out of them, and if he's not fired before,
- 1:06:59then he will be after that game. All right, 11:12, the next week,
- 1:07:03we go down to Duke, where I know there is going to probably be
- 1:07:06anywhere between 20 and 30 orange.
- 1:07:09And maroon fans down there because it is officially Lane
- 1:07:14Stadium South when it comes to the games, due to the rebuild.
- 1:07:21Do you know, they're essentially where Georgia Tech's going to be
- 1:07:25next year. They don't have a lot Elko
- 1:07:29slowly trying to build it and think about the team, I mean, we
- 1:07:34play our best game of the year, against them last year, six and
- 1:07:37six and blew them out by 30. It wasn't even a game.
- 1:07:40So I think, you know, back-to-back wins after a rough
- 1:07:45stretch. Tech easily takes care of do on
- 1:07:48the road. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:07:50And I think arguably the roster is worse this year than it was
- 1:07:54last year. Even though I think Elko is the
- 1:07:57guy and I think elk is the guy that will get them at least back
- 1:08:00to respectability these, if not, you know, the highs that we saw
- 1:08:08during cut Cliffs rain there, but I think he'll at least get
- 1:08:11them back to respectability, but this isn't the year.
- 1:08:13He doesn't have the horses. Like I said, it's a word.
- 1:08:16It's roster top to bottom than it was last year.
- 1:08:19And I think that was that is Georgia Tech's.
- 1:08:21Not as bad as I was saying what I'm saying, relative to their
- 1:08:24roster. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:29So I think, I think Virginia Tech handles us when I think
- 1:08:32that's good, good back-to-back wins there to kind of set them
- 1:08:36up for that. Stretch, run in Virginia.
- 1:08:40Absolutely two games in. Virginia, on the 19th of
- 1:08:44November, the Hokies, Travel down 462 Lynchburg,
- 1:08:49unfortunately, to play the Liberty Flames.
- 1:08:51There you go. Put them up.
- 1:08:53Why are we playing this game on the road?
- 1:08:55I also as much as we're going to have down at Duke, I think.
- 1:09:00What's the size of that Stadium? I've watched a couple games,
- 1:09:03they don't sell out. They might have, I want to say
- 1:09:07it's a 35 or 40 thousand seat stadium.
- 1:09:09And they might have 15 or 20 in there.
- 1:09:11I mean it's bigger than ODU, but not by much, but not by much.
- 1:09:15Alright, I gotta, I gotta effort this before you go, you go.
- 1:09:20What do you think? I will go.
- 1:09:22I will go while you're efforting I hate to say this, but this is
- 1:09:28a seven and five team last year that lost 75% of their offensive
- 1:09:35production. I do not care how good Charlie
- 1:09:38Brewer is he is not replacing that production?
- 1:09:42No, he's then, I think and I think if any pleased that
- 1:09:46November That yeah, that too Charlie Brooker.
- 1:09:51Probably is not making it to November to even play in this
- 1:09:56game. But if he does, he's not Malik
- 1:09:58Willis, he does not get it done. Hokies take care of business in
- 1:10:02Lynchburg and we set up for the Commonwealth cup.
- 1:10:06The next week. I'm with you 25,000 seat
- 1:10:09Stadium. I've seen it a couple times.
- 1:10:10It's probably 15 to 18 thousand there.
- 1:10:14I have a feeling that will be a lot of orange and maroon on the
- 1:10:17road as well. I'm going to pick the Hokies and
- 1:10:20I am hoping as I hope with the ODU game and I hope with the
- 1:10:23wall for game and is Don be eloquently put in where I think
- 1:10:26everybody on that panel, agreed squash them, squash them, squash
- 1:10:32them, make them not want to break curfew on Saturday night,
- 1:10:37at Liberty, foot on the throat. But on throat, just smash.
- 1:10:43And again Charlie Brooker. Yeah he played last year.
- 1:10:46He quit on his team. Charlie Brewer has like ten
- 1:10:48concussions Charlie. Brew is not making it to
- 1:10:50November and for god sakes I agree.
- 1:10:57Like if you're if you're a coach like you were going to send you
- 1:10:59out there knowing if this kid takes one more bad head, he's
- 1:11:02not going to be able to have kids or even communicate.
- 1:11:05By the time he's in his mid-30s You can't have that many
- 1:11:09concussions Jesus. Alright?
- 1:11:13So Commonwealth cut Braun. I am, I'm leaving here and this
- 1:11:19is all I'm going to say in the last 22 years.
- 1:11:26One team has won. 21 team is 12. It's mental tech.
- 1:11:32Wins. I'm right there with you.
- 1:11:36I think I think Ted can pull this one out.
- 1:11:38I think, when you look at This offense.
- 1:11:43I think they are still going to be one-dimensional.
- 1:11:48I think they probably have one of the five best wide receiver
- 1:11:52cores. And you couple that with their
- 1:11:54quarterback, a top-15 passing offense.
- 1:11:59But I don't think that that is going to equate to enough to
- 1:12:05compensate for their lack of running game.
- 1:12:07It's not going to compensate for their lack of offensive line,
- 1:12:10death. Depth and its really gonna
- 1:12:12compensate for their poor defense, especially the
- 1:12:16secondary. They still can't get enough pass
- 1:12:18rush to cover that big-ass flaw. That's going to be the
- 1:12:22difference in the game. Well yeah, I'm and I'm going to
- 1:12:26give a little more insight. It's the the o-line, they
- 1:12:29literally lost a couple of their bus offensive linemen.
- 1:12:32They lost some of their best coaches on the offensive side of
- 1:12:35the ball and as good as Brennan as good as that core is, he's
- 1:12:40okay. Shit knocked out a lot this
- 1:12:42year. And I can already see Brent Pro
- 1:12:45basically, say, I'm gonna probably send six or seven and
- 1:12:48you're going to have to get rid of that ball really quick, or
- 1:12:50you're going to get hit even more.
- 1:12:52And, as bad as that defense was last year, I don't think it's an
- 1:12:57overnight fix. I don't think a coach comes in
- 1:13:00and hits the magic button and goes from being 129th to being
- 1:13:05in the 70s where you can be respectable, it does it work
- 1:13:09like that? Not Without talent and they are
- 1:13:12deprived of Talent on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:13:16So I picked Tech wins this one as well as I said earlier.
- 1:13:19So Brian, let's tally it up here.
- 1:13:22How many you got what you got? I'm going to even for ceiling
- 1:13:26for the Hokies in 2022. I'm at 9:00 and 3:00 what a
- 1:13:31shocker. I'm back at 93 again, as the
- 1:13:33ceiling, Nice Shot, not shocked. Next we get a lesson, I will
- 1:13:40always is As much as I love coaching staff has gone three
- 1:13:44games last year that could easily turn the right way.
- 1:13:46It would have been 9 and 3 so it is what it is.
- 1:13:51But listen, y'all. So these are our ceilings, but,
- 1:13:55let's just be very honest. There is a floor.
- 1:13:59We specially with this team with the death, and we are not
- 1:14:01foolish and Brian. I'm going to since we're
- 1:14:05matching on this, I'm gonna let you make a statement on behalf
- 1:14:07of the boundary Corner podcast hour.
- 1:14:10Floor for this team because this is mine as well as Brian's.
- 1:14:14Yeah. The the floor for this team is
- 1:14:16five and seven. I don't see us going below.
- 1:14:20Five wins. I think there's just enough.
- 1:14:23Winnable games on our schedule and we don't travel enough to
- 1:14:28really feel like this is an awful team.
- 1:14:32This is a team that even with some injuries can just fall off
- 1:14:35the map. You know, when we talk about the
- 1:14:37games that are amenable All on paper out, the gate you're
- 1:14:42looking at ODU, you're looking at Wofford, you know, you're
- 1:14:45looking at Duke and Georgia Tech.
- 1:14:47Liberty is a very winnable game when you look at games that are
- 1:14:51kind of in that toss-up category you've got BC, you got West
- 1:14:55Virginia, you got UVA piss you and see, you can throw pin and
- 1:15:00you would see that conversation as well.
- 1:15:03But I think, in terms of true toss-ups, I think that those
- 1:15:06those games are still in that category.
- 1:15:08So you got The roughly seven games that are either toss-up,
- 1:15:12so you're going to be favored. I think we at least get five of
- 1:15:15those even with some of the flaws of this team and even with
- 1:15:20some things like injuries impacting this roster as the
- 1:15:24season goes along, that's the way to sum it up.
- 1:15:26Injuries again, if this team stays clean injury-wise, and
- 1:15:31when I say clean injury-wise, a guy can miss a week, okay?
- 1:15:35We can, we can live with that guy.
- 1:15:37Missing a month on certain aspects.
- 1:15:40We cannot William McCallum out there orange significant injury,
- 1:15:45going eight, and for stealing 947, who that floor of seven.
- 1:15:50I've hoped to get to say that next year and I get to go like
- 1:15:54ceiling of 10 or 11. And next year, I'll be maybe a
- 1:15:58little bit more tanked up, but when you're when you're talking
- 1:16:02floor of seven, you're talking about being confident a team
- 1:16:06number one, winning all of the matchups, they should win number
- 1:16:09two. Probably at least splitting the
- 1:16:11toss-ups number 3. Probably at least punching up in
- 1:16:15one game, right? And one game.
- 1:16:16Yep. I don't know if we're quite
- 1:16:17there yet, but I mean, I appreciate the optimism at this
- 1:16:21point, you know? I think if you're not optimistic
- 1:16:25in in August, you're not going to be optimistic at all.
- 1:16:29So, if you're not optimistic in August here either, let's think
- 1:16:33like a temple fan Jets fan Jags fan.
- 1:16:41Who else Texans? You're a fan of a team where
- 1:16:45it's just like, we want a good draft pick or can just see, I'm
- 1:16:49just watching because I need a reason, you're a Duke football
- 1:16:52fan, I need a reason to drink on Saturdays and football games on
- 1:16:59and we're losing, it makes me drink more, I mean that happens.
- 1:17:03It happens front, anything broken in the last hour and 20
- 1:17:07minutes, nothing, That's popped across my timeline buddy.
- 1:17:11I think we're good to to wrap it on up and all right.
