- 0:00Hey there. Today I want to talk about a
- 0:02moment in therapy for me that changed the way that I saw
- 0:05myself and honestly, it changed the direction of my healing.
- 0:09In one of my earliest sessions, my therapist and I were talking
- 0:13about my cheating and my porn use.
- 0:16And in the middle of that session and in that
- 0:18conversation, he said something and I'll never forget.
- 0:20He said to me, he said if your wife were enough, you wouldn't
- 0:24have cheated. He said if your kids were
- 0:26enough, you wouldn't have cheated.
- 0:28He said if your God were enough, you wouldn't have cheated.
- 0:31And immediately I felt like this surge of defensiveness and I
- 0:34wanted to push back because here's the deal.
- 0:37My wife was enough and my kids were enough and my faith
- 0:41mattered deeply to me. And so I said that's not true.
- 0:44I don't remember if I actually said that, but that's something
- 0:48that at least I felt. And then I and I meant it.
- 0:52But then it hit me, So what? He wasn't saying was they
- 0:59weren't enough. He was showing me that nothing,
- 1:02no matter how good or meaningful, could fill that hole
- 1:05that was inside of me. Because the real problem was
- 1:08that I didn't know how to be satisfied.
- 1:12That somewhere deep inside of me, I believe that nothing would
- 1:15ever be enough. And just beneath that, that
- 1:18belief that I wasn't enough either.
- 1:21So we're going to talk about that today.
- 1:23Of what is this enough? Not enough concept all about, so
- 1:29we're going to jump into it. Welcome to Beyond the Facade
- 1:35podcast. I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and
- 1:37I'm thrilled to have you join me in the space today.
- 1:39What we're going to be doing is diving deep into the trials and
- 1:42triumphs and truths of seeking authenticity.
- 1:45Becoming your true self isn't about a single action or a
- 1:48moment. It's a relentless pursuit, a
- 1:50commitment to self that reveals the rich connection and meaning
- 1:54that our life has to offer. So whether this is your first
- 1:56time tuning in or you're a regular listener and know this,
- 1:59what you're building here goes beyond a conversation.
- 2:02You're here to challenge, to change, and to celebrate the
- 2:05incredible journey of becoming your authentic self.
- 2:08Because when you dare to show up fully, the rewards are
- 2:10immeasurable. So welcome to Beyond the Facade.
- 2:13Let's get started. Let's talk about this myth of
- 2:18enough. So let's start with this idea.
- 2:20So many of us carry this unspoken belief that if things
- 2:23were just right that we wouldn't struggle.
- 2:27Let me give you some examples of this.
- 2:28If my relationship was stronger, if my partner didn't have so
- 2:32many walls up, or if my family were more supportive, or if I
- 2:36was closer to God. But here's the truth.
- 2:39Even if that were perfectly in place, you might still sense and
- 2:45feel that there was a disconnection and craving or
- 2:47emptiness because this isn't about what's happening around
- 2:50you. It's about what happens within
- 2:53you. When we don't know how to feel
- 2:55satisfied, and we're always looking to feel satisfied, we're
- 2:58always looking for something, we're always grasping for more.
- 3:02It's not because people in our lives are falling short, but
- 3:07it's because we come to rely on something that's outside of
- 3:09ourselves to fix that what's broken inside of us.
- 3:12We're always going external for something that's supposed to be
- 3:15internal. Addiction or compulsive behavior
- 3:18works like that. Compulsive behavior works like
- 3:21it. It kind of whispers to us, this
- 3:24next thing will be what makes you feel a hole, what makes you
- 3:27feel better, but it never delivers.
- 3:30Like at the end of the day, it feels temporarily satisfying and
- 3:33temporarily like the answer. But because you can't fill a
- 3:36bottomless pit with more, you have to repair that hole at the
- 3:40foundation. So we have to be ready to fill
- 3:42that hole. I'm just going to invite you to
- 3:45look at that. OK, So what hole exists for you?
- 3:48Are you even aware that it is? Are you aware of what you're
- 3:50trying to fill it with that the why you're trying to fill it
- 3:53with that? That's a lot of like phase one
- 3:56work in recovery, which is what's the root cause?
- 4:00What hole am I trying to fill? So let's take a look at Part 2.
- 4:04This not enough wound. And this isn't just about
- 4:07feeling like unsatisfied and alive.
- 4:10We can actually fill a deep sense of satisfaction around
- 4:13certain thing, but it's way deeper and it's about you.
- 4:16It's about the belief that you're not enough just the way
- 4:20that you are. And because of that belief,
- 4:23nothing else ever feels like enough either.
- 4:26So it's that it's that constant need to find something, but it
- 4:29really exists inside of us. A lot of people that believe
- 4:33starts really early. So maybe there was some growing
- 4:35up in your home, your family of origin, where love had to be
- 4:40earned, or I had to go chase that.
- 4:42And once I did the certain thing right, that there was this
- 4:45acceptance that was given. Maybe if I was righteous enough,
- 4:48if I had the right kind of grades, if I did well enough in
- 4:51sports, if I wore the right kind of clothes, where success was
- 4:56praised. But at the end of the day, your
- 4:59emotions were ignored, all right?
- 5:01So there was behavior that was praised, but the emotions behind
- 5:05him didn't have space by anybody else.
- 5:08This is where shame was used as like motivation.
- 5:11We had to be really, really, really careful how we use our
- 5:14own feelings to motivate other people.
- 5:17So maybe a parent said to you, like, I'm really proud of you
- 5:21because you did this and we tied our worth to it.
- 5:25If it was about the behavior, or maybe you were never outright
- 5:29told you weren't enough, but you felt it and all the little ways,
- 5:34like people didn't see you, they didn't hear you, didn't show up
- 5:36for you. I'm not inviting you to
- 5:38weaponize that if you didn't get that.
- 5:40So if you're taking from this like a victim mindset, don't do
- 5:43that. But I want to acknowledge what
- 5:45actually happened. What you learned from this
- 5:48experience is OK. I need to be better.
- 5:51And if I am, I do need to hide in ways that I'm broken because
- 5:55ultimately that's going to show that I'm not worthy and I'm not
- 5:57going to be acceptable and I have to prove that I'm worthy.
- 6:01So let me get really good at showing people what makes me
- 6:05worthy. Let me really start to notice
- 6:09what I can do and show people that makes the like I belong.
- 6:13So from there, there's this chase that begins where you
- 6:17might chase success, or you might chase attention, or sex or
- 6:22pornography, or being the perfect partner or parent or
- 6:27friend. But no matter how far you run,
- 6:31it's like trying to fill a cup with a hole at the bottom.
- 6:34You keep pouring, but it never stays full.
- 6:37So This is why you can have people who love you and who
- 6:41respect you and support you and still feels like something's
- 6:43missing. It doesn't matter how much my
- 6:46partner praises me. It doesn't matter how much my
- 6:48boss praises me at the last moments or I don't even believe
- 6:51it to begin with. That's something that we filled
- 6:55out hole with. It's not more validation.
- 6:57OK, So what we need to do is we need to search for healing.
- 7:01Let me give you this Part 3. What is healing the enoughness
- 7:05look like? Let's talk about that healing
- 7:09recovery. It's not just about behavior
- 7:11change. It's not just about stopping
- 7:14porn or ending an affair or managing impulses.
- 7:17It's about that transformation that happens.
- 7:20It's starting with the belief that you're not enough.
- 7:21So we really start to look foundationally.
- 7:24It's the beliefs. The beliefs are what keeps us
- 7:28trap. It's not the behavior, but it's
- 7:30what we believe about ourselves. So what if I'm already enough
- 7:35right now in this moment? Wow, can you think about that?
- 7:40What if I'm already enough in this moment?
- 7:41Right now, in this moment? You might be like, how can I
- 7:45believe that with the kind of choices I've made?
- 7:47This question doesn't require like an immediate answer.
- 7:50It's just an invitation for you to slow down and start noticing
- 7:54all the ways you've been trying to earn love and safety and
- 7:57approval instead of receiving it.
- 8:00So here's what the healing journey can look like.
- 8:03Let me give you key aspects or bullet points in this.
- 8:06I guess I should say the first thing we do is we tell the truth
- 8:09even when it's hard. Second part of this is we let
- 8:12others see the parts of you that you've been hiding, especially
- 8:16in like those safe, supportive environments like therapy or
- 8:20recovery groups. The next piece of this is we sit
- 8:23with the discomfort. So instead of escaping it
- 8:26through numbing and strolling and acting out, we give that
- 8:29space to sit with that discomfort.
- 8:32And then what we do is we learn to reparent that wounded parts
- 8:37of ourselves, so those parts of us that maybe didn't get that
- 8:41parenting done in the right way or at all.
- 8:44We offer compassion to those parts of us that were often
- 8:48criticized or felt like that there was a certain behavior or
- 8:54aspect of life that we had to meet to gain acceptance.
- 8:57Where we offer that compassion to ourselves still through
- 8:59accountability, still through not letting ourselves off the
- 9:02hook, but with compassion that it is outside of behavior, that
- 9:06where acceptance comes from. And then we're going to slowly,
- 9:09gently rewrite this story that says you're broken and you're
- 9:12unworthy and you're too far gone.
- 9:15I'm not saying this is easy, I just gave you what 5 bullet
- 9:19points to go off of. But I am saying it's possible.
- 9:24Over time, as you practice this stuff and you choose this
- 9:27presence over like this performance, the honesty over
- 9:31hiding, the connection part over the control, something's going
- 9:35to shift, OK? Big things are going to shift
- 9:38slowly. It's going to be this big, big
- 9:41battleship that starts to turn, this ship that turns in a new
- 9:45direction, and you're going to start to feel like there's
- 9:48things inside you that are filled.
- 9:50And then this validation is like earning acceptance, earning from
- 9:55going outside of yourself for acceptance.
- 9:58It's not going to feel as important as it used to, Phil,
- 10:01And that's not going to be sudden change.
- 10:04But it's because you put in those pieces, those efforts over
- 10:08and over and over again. So here's the deal.
- 10:11If something in this episode, it's close to home, I want to
- 10:14leave you with this. The problem was never that your
- 10:19partner wasn't enough or your kids or your God.
- 10:23I hated that when I heard it, but I recognized that there was
- 10:28truth behind that it was really about me.
- 10:30So it's that somewhere along the way you came to believe that you
- 10:35weren't, but you were. You are in this moment.
- 10:40You always have been enough. Appreciate you letting this sink
- 10:46into your heart, just noticing this.
- 10:49And if you're listening to this podcast alone, if you're trying
- 10:51to do this by yourself, stop. Stop trying to do it by
- 10:54yourself. Prove that you're worth it by
- 10:58going to and sharing your story, the parts of you that you don't
- 11:01like, sitting with that uncomfortableness, noticing what
- 11:05happens inside of you. And I'm hopefully I get a chance
- 11:08to spend time with you inside of a group setting inside of
- 11:11one-on-one. And then when I say we, I'm
- 11:13talking about those of us that choose recovery services because
- 11:16we've been in that hole before. We know what this looks like.
- 11:19So anyway, keep going. Don't stop, keep fighting.
