Transcript
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: One of the recurring themes you hear on this podcast is the importance of productivity.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And the reason is simple.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It's easy to have great ideas for writing, but it's harder to bring those ideas to life.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Hence the importance of talking about the systems and processes for producing the work while managing the everyday pressures of ordinary life.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Here's a great productivity tip that'll help you kill not only two birds with one stone, but actually three, and it comes from nonfiction author A.J.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Jacobs.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: He says this I write while walking on a treadmill.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I started this practice when I was working on Drop Dead Healthy and read all these studies about the dangers of the sedentary life.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Sitting is alarmingly bad for you.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: One doctor told me that sitting is the new smoking.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So I bought a treadmill and put my computer on top of it.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It took me about 1,200 miles to write my book.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I kind of love it.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: It keeps me awake for one thing.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So through this one simple practice, AJ Jacobs is accomplishing three important things.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: First, he's getting exercise by walking on the treadmill.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Second, he's getting his writing done.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And third, by mixing the two things, he has greater creativity.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Many studies have shown how exercise helps you think more clearly, have a better outlook on life, and be more productive.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Now, you may not like walking on a treadmill, which is totally fine, but you can certainly write while taking a walk.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Just dictate straight into your phone and let it transcribe your words.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: You'll be amazed at how much you can get done this way and how much more creative you feel when you're moving your body.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: After all, we're not just disembodied heads floating around out there in the ether somewhere.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Our heads are attached to our bodies, and when we move our bodies, it helps us become better writers in every way.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I want to take a minute to mention our daily writer membership community.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: You know what has been so much fun the past three months since we've had our membership community open to see all the success that our members have had.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: We've got people in the group who are writing the first drafts of their books, getting their websites finished, getting more client work, and all kinds of really, really cool benefits that come when you're part of a great writing community.
