- 0:11You're about to hear the story of a dream come
- 0:14true. The incredible story of the 1981 world
- 0:18champion Los Angeles Dodgers. In years to come,
- 0:21when Dodger fans look back on 1981, they'll remember
- 0:24it as the year they, the 10th player, and their
- 0:27team, won it all. Oh, sure, baseball historians
- 0:30will remember the strike, but Dodger fans will
- 0:33fondly recall their world championship season
- 0:36and a man -child named Fernando, who led team
- 0:41comeback to the title. It all began Thursday,
- 0:53April the 9th, this magical story. The Houston
- 0:56Astros were in town for a rematch of the year
- 0:59-ending series of 1980. Jerry Royce was scheduled
- 1:02to work the opener, but he injured a calf muscle
- 1:05on the eve of the season. Manager Tom Lasorda
- 1:08drafted Fernando, and El Toro flashed a sign
- 1:11of things to come by blanking the Astros on five
- 1:15hits. Steve Howe and Pablo Castillo have been
- 1:18throwing back of Valenzuela the last inning or
- 1:20so. The 2 -1 pitch to Roberts. Screwball. Swung
- 1:24on and missed. 2 -8. two. opening sweep of the
- 2:27Astros on Sunday, April the 12th, newcomer Kenny
- 2:30Landreau supplied the key offensive blow. Here's
- 2:34Ross Porter for the call. Landreau waiting. Now
- 2:37Rule at the belt. And a pitch to Kenny. 3 -0
- 3:24Dodgers as Dusty Baker stands in. The Dodgers
- 3:27were off and running on a six -game winning streak
- 3:29that put them in first place to stay in the first
- 3:31half. The fifth win in that streak came in Fernando's
- 3:35second start. It was a 7 -1 win over the Giants
- 3:38at Candlestick Park. Fernando allowed just four
- 3:41hits and struck out ten, but he had his scoreless
- 3:44streak snapped at 32 and two -thirds innings.
- 3:47Here's the way Jerry Doggett described it. Enos
- 3:50Cabell. Came into the game tonight hitting .263.
- 3:56The 0 -1 pitch on the way. Lots of the center
- 3:59field is going to fall for a base hit. Here is
- 4:01Herndon in to score, and that breaks the string.
- 4:04The Giants finally get on the board, and Fernando
- 4:07Valenzuela had a beautiful string, and it finally
- 4:10came to a conclusion. One night after Jerry Royce
- 4:13made his injury -delayed debut, an impressive
- 4:16one in a 1 -0 loss to the Astros in Houston.
- 4:19Fernando did his number again on the Astros and
- 4:22Don Sutton. Fernando scattered seven hits, struck
- 4:26out 11. Oh, yes, he also drove in the only run
- 4:29of the game with a fifth -inning single to the
- 4:31opposite field. Valenzuela, single to center
- 4:35in the third inning. He's three for ten this
- 4:37year. And he takes a pitch up and inside, ball
- 4:40one, 1 -0. No score, fifth inning, great ballgame,
- 4:44and the principals go head -to -head right now.
- 4:46Don Sutton pitching to Fernando Valenzuela. The
- 4:49outfield is shallow and way around the left field.
- 4:52The infield is back, but how the third baseman
- 4:54even with the bag. The 1 -0 pitch. Valenzuela
- 4:57hits a line drive, extra base hit. Down the left
- 5:00field line, into the corner to get it is Cruz,
- 5:03and Valenzuela, who was perfectly content to
- 5:06stop at first, goes into second base. Is there
- 5:10anything this kid can't do? So Valenzuela singles
- 5:14to left to score Guerrero. Second on the era,
- 5:19and the Dodgers lead 1 -0. Rick Monday received
- 5:23a rare start April 25th against San Diego. He
- 5:26waited until the 11th inning to bring the 10th
- 5:29player out of its seats by tripling home Ron
- 5:31Say to give the Dodgers a 2 -1 victory. It was
- 5:35a sign of things to come. The one -strike pitch
- 5:37to Monday. Fly ball in the left center field.
- 5:40A long run for Rupert Jones. He's on the track.
- 5:43He leaps. The ball's off the wall. The Giants
- 6:42got their second look at Fernando and a close
- 6:44-up of Fernando Mania, April the 27th at Dodger
- 6:47Stadium. Fernando pitched a seven -hit shutout.
- 6:50He had three hits himself, including a key RBI
- 6:53single in a four -run fourth inning. The 10th
- 6:56player loved every minute of it. Valenzuela singled
- 7:03in the third inning, their first Dodger hit.
- 7:05So, of course, now Griffin has been warned. Randlemania
- 9:42moved north of the border in May. In any language,
- 9:45English, Espanol, or Francais, Fernando is very
- 9:48good. Muy bien, très bien. Les Expos snapped
- 9:52Fernando's scoreless streak at 36 innings. But
- 9:55Fernando's teammates gave him his sixth win with
- 9:58a five -run 10th inning, launched by Reggie Smith's
- 10:01pinch RBI single. The Big Apple was next on Fernando's
- 10:05dance card. His presence made as much noise at
- 10:07Shea Stadium as the jets at nearby LaGuardia
- 10:10Airport. The result, another win, another shutout.
- 10:15Fernando's fifth in seven games and 11 more strikeouts
- 10:19for El Toro. Valenzuela is within one out now
- 10:23of his fifth shutout of the year. Wow. Fernando
- 10:27working on Mazzilli, who of course is a home
- 10:29run threat. Here's the pitch on the way. Fastball
- 10:33low, ball free. So after five walks in the game,
- 10:37he had four through the first three innings,
- 10:39gave up one of the seventh. Now he's gone to
- 10:423 -1 to Mazzilli. And, of course, he represents
- 10:45that tying run again. As the Mets still alive.
- 10:50And Fernando trying to get him. 3 -0 pitch to
- 10:54Mazzilli. Pops up on the first base side foul.
- 10:58Garvey has a play. He's there. He's got it. And
- 11:01he did it again. He did it again. Fernando Valenzuela
- 11:05on a 3 -0 count. Mazzilli fouls out the first.
- 11:09And the Dodgers are 0 -1. In the ninth for the
- 11:15Mets, they go one, two, three, and he has done
- 11:19it again. So Valenzuela wins his seventh in a
- 11:23row, and I'm telling you one thing, this is really
- 11:26some kind of a story. He puts the Big Apple on
- 11:30its ear, and they're still doing high fives out
- 11:33there on the diamond for the Dodgers, and Valenzuela
- 11:36turns them back one more time. He goes walking
- 11:41off with a big grin on his face. The nights of
- 11:43May 13th and 14th were about as exciting as things
- 11:45can get at Dodger Stadium. On May 13th, the Dodgers
- 11:49watched the Expos explode for five runs in the
- 11:51top of the ninth to take a 6 -4 lead. So, what
- 11:55did the Dodgers do? Why score four runs in the
- 11:58bottom of the ninth? Steve Garvey's two -run
- 12:00single tied the game. Two out, runners at first
- 12:04and second. One and two, the count to Steve Garvey.
- 12:07The game should have been over. But Spire kicked
- 12:09the ground ball. It would have been the last
- 12:11out. Juggled it and had no play at second. And
- 12:14when he tried to throw to first, Reggie beat
- 12:16it. Here's the one -two pitch to Garvey. Ryman
- 12:21checking. Lopes on a double steal. And it's a
- 12:23fly ball into right field. Wallach coming in
- 12:26a hurry. And the ball is off the ground. Ron
- 12:41says two -run Homer won it, all with two out.
- 12:45The Expos won in the eighth. The Dodgers came
- 12:48back with three in the eighth. The Expos five
- 12:50in the ninth. The Dodgers have come back with
- 12:52two in the ninth to tie it up. Unbelievable,
- 12:54even for the Dodgers. The 1 -0 pitch to say,
- 12:58outside, ball two. Boy, that's some play. Having
- 13:07a runner's go with two out. A hit -and -run play.
- 13:10with Garvey. 2 -0 pitch to say is a high point.
- 14:43is the game that they finally win. Fernando and
- 14:46the Dodgers were heading for extra innings the
- 14:48night of May the 14th when Pedro Guerrero rocketed
- 14:51a home run into the left field pavilion leading
- 14:53off the ninth inning. Fernando, who allowed just
- 14:56three hits, had two himself in improving his
- 14:59record to 8 -0. 1 -1 to Guerrero. Ratcher comes
- 15:04back to his hitter and there's a... The Dodgers
- 15:55had so much fun winning in dramatic style the
- 15:58two previous nights, they decided to go to the
- 16:00well one more time against the Mets May 15th.
- 16:03After blowing a 4 -1 lead, the Dodgers tied it
- 16:07on Guerrero's home run leading off the eighth.
- 16:09Allen wears number 13. You don't see that very
- 16:11often anymore. But actually, he wore 13 all through
- 16:15high school. He was a quarterback and an outstanding
- 16:18baseball player, and he wore 13 for both sports.
- 16:21The pitch is high, ball one, 1 -0. When Allen
- 16:25came to the Mets, he asked to wear 13, and they
- 16:28told him no. They said the number would bother
- 16:31you. It might be a jinx. They wouldn't let him
- 16:34wear it. The 1 -0 pitch is high. But then last
- 16:36year, when he saved 22 games and became one of
- 16:42the premier relief pitchers in baseball, they
- 16:44said, well, OK, if you want to wear 13, you can.
- 16:46And he's wearing it. And there it goes. With
- 17:14this, bases loaded. One out single in the ninth.
- 17:17The infield is in double play depth. Jorgensen
- 17:23is up. Brooks is back of the bag. And Tavares
- 17:28and Flynn are back. And the pitch to say is...
- 17:42had their seven -game winning streak and Fernando's
- 17:4510 -game major league winning streak come to
- 17:47a grinding halt against the world champion Phillies
- 17:50May 18. Rick Monday came to the rescue May 20th
- 17:53to avoid a Philadelphia sweep. Monday's pinch
- 17:56-hit home run leading off the 10th off Tug McGraw
- 17:59gave the Dodgers a 3 -2 win. Here's McGraw's
- 18:02pitch. A drive to right field. Hughes opened
- 18:21a trip by winning three out of four from the
- 18:23Reds. And Bert Hooten won his seventh consecutive
- 18:26game by beating the Braves in Atlanta. But the
- 18:29night of May 28th was to be a nightmare for Fernando
- 18:32at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. The Braves
- 18:36knocked Fernando from the box with a seven -run
- 18:39fourth inning. No balls and one strike to Gaylord
- 18:42Perry with a base and loaded two out in the fourth.
- 18:44One -nothing in favor of... weekend series with
- 20:47the Reds, the Dodgers capped the series by exploding
- 20:50for 16 runs and 18 hits in a 16 -4 win after
- 20:54trailing 4 -0. Dusty Baker's two -run single
- 20:58keyed a seven -run third inning. Here's a 2 -0
- 21:01pitch. Line drive, face it. Left field. One run
- 21:04in. Here's Darrell headed home. Here's a throw
- 21:07to the plate. It's going to be a little bit...
- 21:23Rick Monday's two -run homer highlighted a six
- 21:25-run seven that sent the Reds on their way. All
- 21:29right, here comes the stopper, Joe Price, who's
- 21:31worked 15 innings in his last 10 games, not allowed
- 21:33a run. And he was the winning pitcher against
- 21:35the Giants this week, up north. And Monday, it's
- 21:37a fly ball to deep left field. Foster away back,
- 21:40this ball is in the bullpen. Hold on. Fernando
- 22:12started off June by avenging his loss to the
- 22:15Braves and becoming the first nine -game winner
- 22:17in the majors. He struck out 11. Rick Monday's
- 22:20first inning homer gave Fernando a lead to work
- 22:23with. One and one to count. Monday hits a high
- 22:27drive into center. Back goes Murphy, a way back.
- 22:58Dodger bullpen in left field, and he hit what
- 23:01looked like a marble over the center field fence.
- 23:03It was hit so high, his fifth home run. He has
- 23:06eight runs batted in. The Dodgers lead 2 -0,
- 23:09and Dusty Baker takes ball one. The Dodgers led
- 23:13by a half a game when the player strike halted
- 23:16the season June the 12th. They would later be
- 23:18declared winners of the first half. The Dodgers
- 23:21opened the second half by winning a three -game
- 23:23series from the Reds. Then they employed their
- 23:25comeback script. to rally from a 4 -0 deficit
- 23:28to capture a 6 -5 decision from the Braves on
- 23:31August the 16th. Steve Garvey's two -run double
- 23:35ignited a three -run seventh inning. Garvey has
- 23:39six home runs, 38 runs batted in. And the pitch
- 23:43to Garvey. Look to the left center field, base
- 23:45hit, might find the alley. Here's one run in.
- 24:05the eye single, fuel the fire. One strike, pitch
- 24:08on the way to save. Ground ball, it up the middle,
- 24:10base hit. Here comes Garvey, and the Dodgers
- 24:13will take the lead for the first time. A tough
- 24:42loss on a controversial interference call against
- 24:45Pedro Guerrero in Chicago was quickly forgotten
- 24:48in St. Louis, where Jerry Royce fired a four
- 24:51-hit shutout and Fernando followed with another
- 24:53four -hitter and 12 strikeouts. Back home, Fernando
- 24:59pitched a four -hit shutout, his sixth and first
- 25:02of the second half. On August 27th, Fernando
- 25:05struck out 10 Cubs to become the first 11 -game
- 25:08winner in the majors. Into the lineup with a
- 25:21two -strike pitch. as he turns back the Chicago
- 25:53Cubs by a score of 6 -0. On September the 5th,
- 25:58Dusty Baker proved he can hit as well when he's
- 26:00sick as others do when they're well. Despite
- 26:03a heavy cold, Dusty's pinch hit home run leading
- 26:06off the 11th inning of Jim Cotton gave the Dodgers
- 26:09a 4 -3 win over the Cardinals. 3 -3 in the 11th.
- 26:13All right, here's the 2 -2 pitch. Fastball driven
- 26:17to left. This might go at the bullpen. Dodgers
- 26:20win. dazzling combination of pitching and hitting
- 26:33in a 5 -0 win over the Cardinals September the
- 26:366th. The 4 -hit shutout was his 7th and gave
- 26:39him his 12th win. 2 -2 to Valenzuela with the
- 26:43bases loaded and nobody out. Here's the pitch.
- 26:45Breaking ball, rip the right field. It's a base
- 26:48hit. Ron Say's two -run homer helped beat the
- 27:08Giants September the 8th, but the Dodgers were
- 27:10to lose their penguin for the remainder of the
- 27:12regular season and the National League Western
- 27:15Division Series on September 9th. Say suffered
- 27:18a fracture to his left forearm when struck by
- 27:20a pitch by the Giants' Tom Griffin. Ron back
- 27:23up, Griffin, right foot on the rubber. Now delivers,
- 27:29and a pitch inside, and it hits Say, and he's
- 27:33going to be awarded first base. But Say is acting
- 27:36like a man who's hurt. He slammed his helmet
- 27:39down and bad and walked away as if he was not
- 27:42only angry, but he knew he needed some help.
- 27:45And he's taking a walk right now and might have
- 27:49gotten it around the wrist. And Bill Buehler
- 27:52working on him right now would be the left wrist
- 27:55or forearm. And Say, from the looks of things,
- 27:59will be coming out. He had that action about
- 28:02him when he was hit as if he... It was finished
- 28:05for the night. But there was always Fernando.
- 28:08He tied the Major League rookie record and set
- 28:11a National League record with his eighth shutout,
- 28:13a 2 -0 -3 hitter against Atlanta on September
- 28:1617th. Chambliss waiting, and Fernando delivers.
- 28:19Screwball! Swung on and missed. 0 -1. Valenzuela,
- 28:28last year for the Dodgers, pitched only 18 innings.
- 28:33Though he is still very much the rookie. The
- 28:36strike one pitch. Screwball lined at Garvey.
- 28:39And it's all over. Fernando with his eighth shutout
- 28:42of the year. Before a capacity crowd, he has
- 28:46done it again. Viva Fernando and bring on the
- 28:58Astros. That was the rallying cry of the Dodgers
- 29:01and their 10th player. as the regular season
- 29:04ended and the playoffs began.
