- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, good morning, listeners. Thank you for listening to Lament
- 0:03Speaker 1: of Hope podcast. And thank you for listening, watching whichever
- 0:07Speaker 1: platform you're on. Against the monetary value of having a
- 0:12Speaker 1: very well-paying job. And I'm assuming that I'm doing pretty
- 0:15Speaker 1: much the same. So soon after I filmed Bake Off,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I started working for a company in Milan, an American company,
- 0:23Speaker 1: by the way, that has one of their research and
- 0:28Speaker 1: development centers in Milan and I was working for them.
- 0:30Speaker 1: It was a fantastic job. I had landed the job
- 0:35Speaker 1: of a lifetime there. I mean, my salary was six figures.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I had private health, paid holidays, private pension, a team
- 0:45Speaker 1: of engineers working with me that were exceptionally talented. The
- 0:51Speaker 1: company was really good and really strong. You might have
- 0:56Speaker 1: heard of them because these are the people that patented
- 0:58Speaker 1: in the 50s the bubble wrap. The company is called
- 1:04Speaker 1: Seal There. And when I had the offer to write
- 1:11Speaker 1: my first book, I went to my manager and I said,
- 1:15Speaker 1: this is the situation. I might need some time off
- 1:18Speaker 1: to write this book. But obviously the two things were
- 1:21Speaker 1: incompatible because I was looking after a team of 25
- 1:24Speaker 1: people with three pilot lines in check. It wasn't compatible
- 1:30Speaker 1: with having to spend five days a week writing recipes.
- 1:36Speaker 1: So I had to quit that job. come back to
- 1:39Speaker 1: the UK and dedicate the following two years to write cookbooks.
- 1:44Speaker 1: My mom was furious. She was fuming because she said,
- 1:48Speaker 1: you're dumping a job that people would pay good money
- 1:52Speaker 1: to have. You've been lucky enough to get it. You
- 1:56Speaker 1: are in a senior management position and you're giving all
- 1:59Speaker 1: of that up to write a cookbook. She was like,
- 2:03Speaker 1: you're crazy. You're going to regret this. well, now it's
- 2:10Speaker 1: been five years since, I haven't regretted it. Because I'm
- 2:17Speaker 1: fully aware that I would have been in a much
- 2:20Speaker 1: better financial situation if I'd stayed in Milan. But I'm
- 2:24Speaker 1: also aware that I would be spending every single day
- 2:28Speaker 1: of my life wondering what could have been. You know,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and I can't live with that thought. I'd rather... take
- 2:38Speaker 1: a gamble, get it wrong, and pay the price for that,
- 2:42Speaker 1: then not jump at all. And in case it doesn't
- 2:48Speaker 1: go well, you see, and go back to the initial
- 2:52Speaker 1: point of our conversation. Yeah, I mean, this is probably
- 2:55Speaker 1: probably how I ended up on Bake Off. Because when
- 2:59Speaker 1: I was putting together the form to apply, I thought,
- 3:02Speaker 1: what the heck, I might as well do it. What
- 3:04Speaker 1: have I got to lose? I never, ever close any
- 3:09Speaker 1: doors in front of me. And I think that that's
- 3:14Speaker 1: probably the only mantra I want to leave to my
- 3:18Speaker 1: kids as they grow up. Because you never know. You
- 3:23Speaker 1: never know what may happen, what may come. I keep
- 3:28Speaker 1: telling them that falling down is absolutely worth the fun
- 3:32Speaker 1: of a run. So go for it, give it a go.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And if you fall, you'll recover. You know what not
- 3:40Speaker 1: to do next time around.
