- 1:12time for today's episode of Nick Carter, which on one advance is a little
- 1:18scary, so parental discretion advised. Here now is Death after Dark? What's
- 1:34the Night of What is it another case for Nick Carter, Master Detective.
- 1:45Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all manhunters. The detective's
- 1:48ability at solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter,
- 1:53Master Detective. The Night's Curious Adventure Death after Dark for Nick Carter and
- 2:00the mystery of the vampire killings. Mister Carter, mister Carter, I've got
- 2:12to talk to you. Something has happened to you. Yes, no,
- 2:15well that is it didn't It didn't. Well, it might be better if
- 2:17you were to tell me just what it was I did or didn't happen to
- 2:21her. Okay, well it was like this, sir. Four of us,
- 2:23Betty Graham, Gertrude Chase, Dora Mason, and myself were playing tennis
- 2:28in the park this afternoon. We played a few sets, and then about
- 2:30six thirty we started home, But just as we got to the park gate,
- 2:34Dora suddenly discovered that she left her racket in the court. I offered
- 2:38to go get it for but she started after it herself. The rest of
- 2:40us sat down on the bench to wait for After about ten minutes, Gertrude
- 2:45suddenly got up, said something about going to meet Dora, and then started
- 2:47up the same path as Dora had done. Betty and I sat on the
- 2:51bench talking and waiting for them, until suddenly we began to realize it was
- 2:54getting quite dark. All at once, Betty said, what was on my
- 2:59mind? I don't like this pill. The tennis court is only about five
- 3:04minutes walk from here. They should have been back before this. Yes,
- 3:07sir, I know, I was thinking the same thing. Why do you
- 3:13suppose to be keeping them? I don't know. Don't you think we'd better
- 3:16walk up that way and see what's happened to them? Nothing has happened to
- 3:20them, Betty. But if you want to walk up and meet them,
- 3:23why, Okay, I'd rather do that than keep sitting here. Oh come
- 3:28on, man, But I'll bet we meet them before we get to the
- 3:30court. But I judge from the way you would tell us that you didn't
- 3:35find them. No, mister Carter, we didn't. When we got to
- 3:38the court, it was deserted. We called and called, but we got
- 3:40no answer. Then suddenly Betty saw something fair. Look what is it,
- 3:46Betty? Look they're on the grass behind you. That's Doris Tennis racket.
- 3:52I know those colored strings. But that means that she never came back here
- 3:55at all. But where could you have, Betty? Dora have a rose
- 4:00in her hair? Why? Yes, she pitched it up on the path
- 4:03just before she left us. I remember watching her tie and not in the
- 4:06stem, so she could put one of her hair up and sew it to
- 4:08hold it in her hair. Why here by the end of the net a
- 4:15rose. You're right, and it's got a knot in the stem too.
- 4:19And look, Betty, it's been stepped on. Bill. I'm afraid.
- 4:26Let's get out of here. Something happened. I'm afraid. And she started
- 4:30running across the grass toward the nearest gate. Weren't you scared too? Well?
- 4:33Yes, some, but I caught up with her and quieted her down
- 4:36a little. And you didn't see anything of the girls you were looking for.
- 4:40Well, by this time it was too dark to see much of anything.
- 4:44Betty took me by the arm and we made for the nearest gate.
- 4:46We weren't running, but we weren't lingering either. Maybe you just a miss
- 4:49Wait a minute, I just haven't finished. Before we got to the road
- 4:54leading to the gate, we we had to go through a patch of thick
- 4:56woods. I'd gone that way before, so I didn't think much about it.
- 5:00But Betty was still pretty scared. It's dark here, I can hardly
- 5:04see anything. Let's hurry, I want to get out of here. If
- 5:06we try to go any faster, we may fall over something. Just just
- 5:11take it easy and keep going and we'll well phil What did happen? That's
- 5:30just the point, Nick, I don't know. When I regained consciousness.
- 5:34A couple of minutes later, one of the part gods was bending over me,
- 5:38and another was trying to bring Betty back to her senses. And you
- 5:42have no idea what actually did happen, No, Nick, no idea at
- 5:45all, except that a lot of creatures seem to drop down on us from
- 5:48out of the trees. You say, creatures, How do you use that
- 5:53word? Why? That word seems to just to be about the only word
- 5:55to use. You couldn't see them at all, No, it was so
- 5:59dark. I could only see that there were a lot of dark forms around
- 6:02me. The thought flashed through my mind that we'd been attacked by a band
- 6:06of boy robbers. And they didn't say anything, no exclamations or anything,
- 6:11No, Nick, nothing, not a word. The only sounds I remember
- 6:15sort of hissing, sounded like a lot of snakes. Then I got a
- 6:19blow on the back of my neck and adopted me senseless. What happened to
- 6:23Betty? She even doped. She said something had been put over her nose,
- 6:28something that felt like a piece of burlap and smelled sweet and she lost
- 6:31consciousness after the guards brought her too. I took her home and left her
- 6:35there. As far as I know, she was unharmed, except that she
- 6:39was almost hysterical. What about the other girls, the ones who played tennis
- 6:42with you? Did they turn up later? No? I called both of
- 6:45them on the phone, but neither of them were home, and they hadn't
- 6:47been home since they were out with us. And our first job was to
- 6:50tell the girl's parents what we can and get their permission to take charge of
- 6:54the investigation. Then we'll start her investigating in the park. Everything here looks
- 7:09so different at night. Mister Carter much rather not have to make this examination
- 7:13by night, Phil, But I don't dare wait until morning might be too
- 7:15late. There's the tennis court right ahead, mister Carter, and here's the
- 7:18tennis racket right where we left it. Don't go any further. I want
- 7:21to see what I can find in the ground in the way of marks.
- 7:24To Prince m hm, yeah, yes, pretty up, Yes, that
- 7:32a number of barefooted persons have been tramping on the grass here barefooted. Yes,
- 7:38I found one pretty clear impression on the complete foot look about the size
- 7:42of a ten year old boy. Yes, there are lots of prints here.
- 7:46Do you think they could be the principal? Come here? What is
- 7:49it have you found? I'll take it easy, Bill, take it easy,
- 7:54don't care door a Mason? Is she? Yes? Phil, She's
- 8:01dead, Poor Dora. Why she almost looks as if she were asleep,
- 8:05doesn't she? Yes? Except for that peculiar alabaster whiteness of her skin,
- 8:13almost as if there wasn't a drop of blood left in her body. How
- 8:16was she killed, mister Carter? I don't know. I don't know.
- 8:22The only mark I can find on her is a tiny round hole in her
- 8:24neck, a couple of inches below her ear. Well, it's pretty late,
- 8:41but I guess he'll forgive us when he knows why we've come. He
- 8:43may be in bed by now. I'm sorry if he is, but I
- 8:46can't go unto lamorrow. I must fry not tonight. Yeah. Oh,
- 8:50hello, Phil, what's up? This is mister Carter. Ed He wants
- 8:54to hear the story about you and Ethel how you were attacked in the park
- 8:56last week. Are you trying to kid me? Oh? Edward? Quite
- 8:58serious? Fill and the girl who was with him were attacked in the same
- 9:01way. This evening the girl was killed? What was she? Dora Mason?
- 9:09Dora, See that's tough. Well, come in sure, Ed,
- 9:16We're afraid gird cru Chase has been killed too. Hey, what is this
- 9:20a gang war? Did you think it as gangsters who attacked you? Ed?
- 9:24I no, I didn't know what they were. They might have been
- 9:26small men, or they might have been boys. How many were they?
- 9:31I should say maybe a dozen. I don't know what. I couldn't see
- 9:33them. They seemed to drop down out of the trees. They were so
- 9:37quiet. I thought maybe they weren't human. Not human. How do you
- 9:41mean the only noise I heard was was a sort of hissing when you were
- 9:46fighting them? Did you hit any of them? Sure, lots of them.
- 9:50What did they feel like? They were small, not very strong,
- 9:54and they weren't dressed in regular clothes. I don't know what they had on,
- 9:56but it wasn't our kind of clothes. What did they do to They
- 10:01swarmed all over us. We both yelled for help, and then they put
- 10:05a piece of burr lap over my face, which covered my eyes and nose.
- 10:07It smelled funny, made me dizzy. Then they knocked me out.
- 10:13How about the girl? Grabbed hold of her and put the same kind of
- 10:15cloth over her face. She said to hers had a strange odor, sort
- 10:20of like oranges. It made her unconscious, but it didn't last long.
- 10:22Some part guards heard us, and the things disappeared as they came up for
- 10:28either of you heard. I wasn't, but Ethel, the girl who was
- 10:31with me, was wounded in the throat here about, mister Carter ed,
- 10:37what was the wound? It was a little hole in her neck, about
- 10:41two and a half inches below her ear. And this, this is the
- 10:45thing that wounded her. A good boy. Now we're getting somewhere. May
- 10:52I keep this well? Of course, mister Carter, Does it help you?
- 10:54It does? Indeed, this is our first real step forward. And
- 11:09you say that Moren still had the thing that made the hole in her neck.
- 11:11Yes, Patsy, it was a wicked little instrument. Scubby took it
- 11:15up to one of the medical supply houses to see if they could tell us
- 11:18anything about it. What does it look like, Nick, Well, it's
- 11:20about three and a half inches long, I should say about half that distance.
- 11:24It's the size of a lead pencil. Then it tapers down to a
- 11:26needle point. But just before you reach the point, there's a small swelling
- 11:30like a little bob about a quarter of an inch long. What's the idea
- 11:33of that? Well, if I'm not mistaken, once the point of this
- 11:35instrument has been stuck in the flesh. The little bob holds it. This
- 11:37we I'm loose, you know, something like the barb and a spear.
- 11:41In fact, that's how Moran happened to have this one. After he and
- 11:43his girlfriend have been attacked by these these things, they found this still hanging
- 11:48in the flesh of her neck. Through the center of this needle. There's
- 11:52a hole the size of a hair at one end and slightly larger at the
- 11:56other. What is it gadget? Used for a nick injecting something into the
- 11:58blood? No, Patsy, I don't think so. I feel sure it
- 12:03was used for taking something out. Did you see that early this morning the
- 12:07police found the body of the other girl who was with Phil yesterday. Yes,
- 12:11I know, and she died exactly the same way door I didn't.
- 12:15That's the thing that puzzles me about this whole thing is this The killers don't
- 12:18act like human beings, and yet they must be nick. This couldn't be
- 12:24a sort of repetition of Edgar Allen Poe's story Murders in the Room Morgue.
- 12:26No, no, no, no, Patsy, there are no monkeys or
- 12:28apes in this killers must be human beings unless unless what Patsy, Well,
- 12:35there's one very obvious idea suggested by the fact that each body had a hole
- 12:39in the throat, and that each body was practically drained of blood. That's
- 12:45true, particularly as there was no blood found on the ground near the bodies.
- 12:48That's just what I mean. It certainly suggests, I mean, you
- 12:54can't help thinking of well, vampires, isn't that what you mean? Well,
- 13:00yes, of course I don't believe, Bessy. What is a vampire
- 13:05actually? Why? It's a sort of huge back which kills its victims by
- 13:09sucking the bloods in the tropes. Eh. Have they ever been known to
- 13:13attack men? Why? I don't think so, except in stories. Could
- 13:18about leave footprints like a ten year old boy? Of course, not bats
- 13:22of clause. Well, I know it's silly, Nick. I don't believe
- 13:28in them. I know there are no such things. It's just that I
- 13:31know, I know, Betsy. It's just that it looks so very much
- 13:33like what we've heard about vampires that it's an easy, if impossible solution.
- 13:39But Nick, these girls were murdered, so there must be an answer.
- 13:41Of course, Patsy, of course, but I refuse to believe in the
- 13:46supernatural. I feel sure that the answer must be that somewhere there exists a
- 13:52sect or creed that uses human blood and its rituals religious or otherwise. Do
- 13:56you think the blood is the answer, not the killing? I do.
- 14:01I feel certain, Betsy that these girls were not, in the strict sense
- 14:05of the word murdered. Not Nay, no, Betsy. They died because
- 14:11for some reason the blood was grown out of their bodies. Is this the
- 14:28patch of woods where Phil Morgan and his girlfriend were attacked last night? Nick,
- 14:31Yes, Scubby and I think this is probably the best place for the
- 14:33test. Well, gee, this is dangerous business, Nick, letting yourself
- 14:37be used as bait for these creatures. Suppose they get the best of you.
- 14:41Well, that's a chance I'm taking, Scubby. I had a long
- 14:43talk with my friend Rayship and Anders yesterday. You know, he's an explorer
- 14:46and scientist, has been over the word Babio knows more about the peoples of
- 14:50the Earth than anyone else, But they can't tell me the answer to this
- 14:52puzzle. He agrees with me that I'm on the right track. Oh,
- 14:56I don't like it, Nick. Even if these are human beings, they
- 14:58can still be fiend. Would you say you're going to do it? I
- 15:01know better than to waste my breath arguing with you. Thanks, Kevvy.
- 15:05No, you'll help me get ready for the test. Oh sure, sure?
- 15:09What do I do? Well? First, I'll set this camp chair
- 15:11up here in the center of this little space in the trees. I'll hold
- 15:16the lights while you sort out those ropes you out there. You find there
- 15:18are twelve less sues. I want you to lay them on the ground around
- 15:20this camp chair so that the whole space is covered with them. Oh you
- 15:24mean so that nobody can come near the chair without stepping in one of the
- 15:26last shoes. Oh I get you. Yeah, like this, that's right,
- 15:30Scuby. Then bring the free end of each rope here to the chair.
- 15:33I'll tie them together and then tie them to my wrist and I can
- 15:37tighten them all at once with one pull when the time comes. Hey,
- 15:39this is quite a stunt me, But from what the young people told me,
- 15:41these creatures are weak enough, so why should be able to hold several
- 15:45of them without difficulty? Are Is that what you want? Nick? Yes,
- 15:48Yes, that's fine, Scubby. Now I'll sit in the chair,
- 15:52hold the end of the ropes, spike. Now, if you'll take this
- 15:56bag of corn meal, sprinkle it all around this space, over the ropes
- 16:00and everything, and I'll be all set. Okay, Nick, Hey,
- 16:04what's this corn meal for? I hope to get some footprints, and I
- 16:07may also serve as a trail that we can follow afterwards. Oh I wish
- 16:11I were sure you were going to be safe. I don't like this whole
- 16:14business, neither do I. It has to be done. This is the
- 16:18only way I can see to do it. There had enough corn meal spread
- 16:22around, Nick? Yeah, fine, Scubby, all right, I'm all
- 16:26set. I remember Nick, I'm going to be just outside the woods with
- 16:30a couple of Rowley's men. One shout out of you and we'll come and
- 16:33running. Fine, Scubby. I hope I won't need you, but I'm
- 16:36glad to know you're there all So long for now? Oh so long?
- 16:40Nick, Hope you come out of this, Okay, HI will don't we
- 16:47h? I wish I felt assured of that as I sound. Oh,
- 16:53come on, come on, you're coming, Let's get this over ah.
- 17:22But what really did happen? Well, after Scubby left me, I waited,
- 17:27awhile nothing happened. I waited some more. Still nothing happened. Then
- 17:33I heard some funny noises overhead. Suddenly a swarm of somethings dropped on top
- 17:38of me out of the trees. I tried to fight them off, but
- 17:41in spite of the fact that they were weak, there were so many of
- 17:44them I scarcely move tried to catch one of them, but I couldn't seem
- 17:48to get my hands on anything. Gosh, what a feeling that must have
- 17:51been. Yes, I say so. And I felt a piece of that
- 17:55bur lamp over my face and smelled a strained, sickish sweet odor like oranges.
- 18:00I felt dizzy almost at once, and something get me in the back
- 18:03of the neck. And that's all I know. Did you see anything,
- 18:04Scuby, No, Patsy. After I left Dick, I waited for a
- 18:07few minutes, and then I heard those queer noises, so I dashed into
- 18:11fight all that was going on? What did you find? Well? Nick
- 18:14was flat on his back the burlap over his face, footprints all over the
- 18:18corn neel, and nothing else in sight. Did you try to follow any
- 18:21of the princes? Oh? No, they were all over the place they
- 18:23seemed to go in all directions. Would have been hopeless to try to follow
- 18:26them, so that the net result of the evening's expedition was just exactly nothing.
- 18:32A fine thing. Nicholas Carter's office. Oh yes, lieutenant, what
- 18:42how long ago? All right, I'll tell him? Yes, thanks,
- 18:48goodbye. That was Lieutenant Riley Nick. He said that they just found a
- 18:52third girl in the park, murdered in the same way as the others,
- 18:55the same hole in the side of the neck, and no blood left in
- 18:56the body. Now I know I'm right. The tachers don't want any blood
- 19:00except from women or girls. They won't touch men. That's why they did
- 19:03nothing to me after getting me completely at the Mercy last night. Well,
- 19:07I'll try it again tonight. I've got a different setup. How different,
- 19:11Nick, I'll address myself as a woman. Oh that's silly, Nick.
- 19:15If they want women's blood, they'll know fast enough you're no woman. And
- 19:18besides, there's another reason why you shouldn't do it yourself. What's that while
- 19:21you acted as your own decoy last night, you were so busy defending yourself
- 19:25that you didn't have a chance to do anything about catching one of them.
- 19:26Yes, I know, I know that's true. But there's no other way
- 19:29to do it' Scubby. There is one other way, Nick, A much
- 19:32better way. What's that, Patsy? Use me for bait but nothing doing.
- 19:37Patsy, you think I'm going to risk your life, You risked your
- 19:40own life. I'm no better than you are. That's different. No,
- 19:42Patsy, I won't let you, and that's final. It's not final,
- 19:45Nick. Three girls have been killed already and two others attacked. If I
- 19:48can help put an end of these killings by serving his date for these awful
- 19:52things, I want to do it. But Patsy, you know Nick,
- 19:55no bud's about it. I want to do it, Patsy, I Nick,
- 19:59you've just got to say yea yes, I'm serious. You and Scubby
- 20:02can stand by to protect me as well as to catch one of these creatures.
- 20:06Gosh, Nick, looks as if you got yourself a decoy, whether
- 20:08you want it or not, If the lives of other girls can be saved,
- 20:11it's worthwhile for me. To do it all right, Pantsy. If
- 20:15that's the way you feel about it, I'll use you, thanks, Nick.
- 20:21Now, what are the plans? That's going to require some real thought.
- 20:26So let's put our heads together right now. Any mistake this time would
- 20:32be fatal. There. That's the last of the steaks you wanted. Nick,
- 20:52Good work, Scubby. I will fasten six traps to which are the
- 20:56four stakes, with this heavy wire, and I'll keep them from dragging their
- 20:59traps away once they're caught in them. Well, the traps break their legs,
- 21:02nak No, Petsy, I think not. They're just up us strong
- 21:04enough to clamp firmly on their ankles and keep them from getting loose without breaking
- 21:07any bones. Okay, and with the twenty four traps and a double circle
- 21:11around you, one of them's bound to get something. How far away are
- 21:15you and Scubby going to be? Right at the edge of these woods,
- 21:17Patsy? Only about one hundred feet away. You don't think our being here
- 21:21will scare them off? To you, Nick, you're being around where I
- 21:22was last night didn't keep them awaited it? No, it didn't, you
- 21:26know. I don't think they're afraid of anything. I take what they want
- 21:29when they want it, and I'm going to be close enough so that I
- 21:32can reach Patsy and nothing flat when the time comes there, Well, if
- 21:37it takes care of all the traffstick now, anything else, No, I
- 21:41guess that's all. I will just have to wait, Nick, ass Patsy.
- 21:48There's just one thing that scares me a little. Listen, Patsy,
- 21:51if you'd rather know? No, Nick, no, listen. What if
- 21:55one of those those things should get that piece of brill lap over my face
- 21:59before I could scream and let you know that they're here? How would you
- 22:02know I needed help. I've already thought of that, Bessy. And here's
- 22:04what I want you to do. As soon as we leave. You start
- 22:07talking quietly to yourself. Be starte poems, tell yourself stories, anything you
- 22:11want, but don't stop talking, no matter what silly things you may have
- 22:15to say. Then, if for any reason at all we do here you
- 22:17stop talking, we'll come rushing in after you, and that way, silence
- 22:19will be a signal that can't fail. Oh, Nick, you're wonderful.
- 22:23I might have known you'd have an answer. I feel better already. Anything
- 22:27else, passy, anything at all? No, Nick, I'll be all
- 22:30right the center of a circle of traps. I've got one of the Watchman's
- 22:34big electric glan has really the instant we hear you scream, or hear you
- 22:38stop talking, we'll turn the light on. Oh kay, Nick, you're
- 22:44leaving now. Yes, yes, we'll be going now. Good luck,
- 22:48Betsy. So long, kid, have fun, so long, and I
- 22:55hope it will be fun. Better start talking? Passy? Okay? Nick?
- 23:00Well, this is it the sun that brief December day rose chairless over
- 23:08heels of gray, and doctor Certling gave it noon a saddle, lights and
- 23:14waning boom. It's white as snow and everywhere that Mary web is she wearing
- 23:33that leather collie you got for her, Nick, Yes, I hadn't made
- 23:37so. It covers her neck, her back, and her chest. I'm
- 23:40sure sex not protection. No. I wonder how much longer the poor kid
- 23:45will have to keep this up. She's been going for almost an hour.
- 23:48She's beside of Paul Revere's ride ten times. You don't get some action pretty
- 23:53soon now I'll begin to get, Yes, but the little men are leaving
- 24:03them running away. Oh Patsy, Patsy, how you feel you? All
- 24:08right? Petsy? This Dizy's hood take care of us, Gubby. We've
- 24:15got two of those creatures, not traps. Are they dead? Nick?
- 24:18They look so No, No, they're just unconscious. The treatment was too
- 24:22rough for them, maybe, So what are they? Can you tell?
- 24:26They look like little man, That's all I can tell now, some sort
- 24:29of pigmies, obviously members of one of the Yellow Asiatic races. I should
- 24:33say, well, Patsy, what you've done is solved the case. How
- 24:38do you feel now? All right? I guess, and then let's get
- 24:41back to the office. We'll formed my scientist friend and me to stay between
- 24:44us. We ought to be able to find out what this is all about.
- 24:56You're feeling all right now, Patsy? Yes? Gobby? Oh,
- 24:57I still get the shivers. I think of all these little hands clutching me
- 25:02all over, mister Andrews and Nick getting anywhere. I don't know. I've
- 25:06been in the inner office there with those two creatures for almost an hour.
- 25:08Now and Andrews talk their language, Patsy more or less. Nick says they
- 25:12speak a dialect. It is some variation of an East Asiatic tongue. Anders
- 25:17knows one that is close enough so that he can talk to him, so
- 25:25they can talk anytime except when they're hunting. Well, Nick, what's it
- 25:30all about? Did you get anything out of a nick? Well, it
- 25:33turns out that they're not men but women. Women have belonged to some tribe,
- 25:36and they outskirts of China call themselves Tucks. There are one hundred tribes
- 25:38in those deserts. We know nothing about. This tribe of Talk must be
- 25:41one of them. Who did you find out why they killed those girls?
- 25:45Well, mister Anders here knows more about that than I do. Well it
- 25:48seems that in the Talk tribe, according to the tribal laws, when a
- 25:52woman's husband dies, she has to kill herself to provide him with female companionship
- 25:56in whatever heaven he goes to. Now, the only she can avoid this
- 26:00is to draw the blood from a female animal and sacrifice it to her husband.
- 26:04This he'll accept instead of hurt, and it must be done within six
- 26:07months after his death. But these women, being here in the city,
- 26:11couldn't get any animals, so they had to use these girls instead. As
- 26:15far as they were concerned, it made no difference. Any female animal would
- 26:18do for them. There were several widows in the group, and the end
- 26:22of six months. Time was drawing near, so they had to work fast.
- 26:25They didn't want to hurt the girls, but they hadn't to have the
- 26:27blood for the sacrifice. But what are they doing here in this country if
- 26:30they come from somewhere over in East Asia? They say that John Bailey and
- 26:34Explorer made up a band of ten men and twenty women and took them on
- 26:38a world tour, doing their native dances and their native costumes and chanting their
- 26:44weird little songs and rituals while he lectured about them. Since the war started,
- 26:48he's been touring the United States, playing in theaters, nightclubs, anywhere
- 26:52else they could book them. They've been at some nightclub away uptown for the
- 26:55past two weeks. They say, Is there any way we can stop any
- 26:57further killing. Yes, and we'll round them all up and turn them over
- 27:00to the federal authorities for detention until they can be deported back to their own
- 27:04land. Too dangerous to be allowed to run loose in a civilized country.
- 27:08Nick, and I think we owe you would bet a gratitude in this boyn
- 27:11for what you've done. It was nothing. I was glad to do it.
- 27:15Well. The women and children want to use the park. Wouldn't call
- 27:18it nothing, Betsy. But I didn't do it for them, Nick,
- 27:21I did it for you. This has been another of the strange adventures of
- 27:38Nick Carter, Master Detective, which are brought to you regularly at the same
- 27:42time by w R Mutual. What's your story going to be about next week?
- 27:48Nick? Instead of a preview of next week's story, I want to
- 27:51talk seriously for a moment about a problem that confronts every owner and driver of
- 27:53an automobile today, a gasoline black market. At the present time, there
- 27:59simply is not enough gasoline available to supply the needs of our armed forces and
- 28:02the unlimited wants of civilians as well. Gasoline is more and more necessary in
- 28:07prosecuting this war. Gasoline in its byproducts for every branch of our ever increasing
- 28:11armed forces must be filled first, and gasoline rationing is the American way of
- 28:17seeing that each of us gets his fair share of that limited supply which remains
- 28:21after war needs have been satisfied. But gasoline rationing can be made to work
- 28:25only if you and I and every one of our pall of Americans follows the
- 28:29rules and plays fair. The rules are very simple, and the very easy.
- 28:33One, write the license number of your car and ink on each of
- 28:37your gas coupons. Two never buy gasoline without giving up the proper amount of
- 28:41gas coupons. And three never buy or accept gas coupons that are not rightfully
- 28:45yours. The black market on gasoline thrives on people who think it's smart to
- 28:51get more than their fair share, even at the expense of their neighbors.
- 28:55So play fair with your fellow citizens by playing square with gasoline rations. When
- 29:00you get more than your share, someone else has to go without. The
- 29:04Return of Nick Carter is produced in the studios of WR and is broadcast over
- 29:08most of these stations every Saturday evening at seven o'clock Eastern wartime. This is
- 29:15mutual welcome back. It goes back to the pulp roots of this show.
- 29:26You know, I don't think there's any other detective show we could air where
- 29:36the answer ultimately is that the strange pygmy women did it. But that'll work
- 29:44here. Definitely a spooky story though. All right, well now on the
- 29:48listener comments and feedback, and Kevin offers the identity of our mystery. Heavy
- 29:57of the villain in Body in the Cab says isn't the heavy Wendell Holmes.
- 30:03It sounded a lot like him to me anyway. I enjoyed it. Hope
- 30:07this helps a bit again, Thanks for all you do well, Thanks Kevin,
- 30:11and sounds like a potential solution. Wendell Holmes is a New York based
- 30:15actor and many of the programs he appeared in. I back most of them.
- 30:19Nick Carter, Ellery, Queen, Secret Agent K seven and the Greatest
- 30:27Story ever told. We're based in New York, so that could work.
- 30:32If anyone disagrees, I'll let me let me know. But I appreciate the
- 30:37answer on that, Kevin. And that'll actually do it for today. We'll
- 30:40be back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny Doller. Be sure to follow us
