- 0:27Hey, everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So with everything that's going on in this world and how quickly
- 0:33and fast-paced it seems to be every day, if it's not one
- 0:37thing, it's another. I would like to talk to you
- 0:39about living with uncertainty. So we all have it.
- 0:43We all understand what it means. We all understand the concept of
- 0:46uncertainty. And I think that for most of us,
- 0:51we don't realize how much of it is around us and how much it's
- 0:56played upon every day in our media, in our families, and how
- 1:01much time we as human beings spend thinking about what if if
- 1:07this goes on, if this goes on, if this goes on.
- 1:09Now don't get me wrong, that is an actually really good part of
- 1:14who we are that we can project and future pace and think about
- 1:18something and say how will I handle that if this happens?
- 1:22The challenge we have is when it comes into our lives and stays
- 1:25there and it just ruminates in us, it gets into our bones, it
- 1:29gets into our very fiber, into our soul and it creates havoc
- 1:34because we can't stay in that state.
- 1:37Part of our well-being, part of our psychological well-being as
- 1:41human beings is to gain certainty and it makes us feel
- 1:45safe, right? We all need safety, We all
- 1:47understand the concept of basic human needs and we all need
- 1:50shelter. We all need food.
- 1:52We all need to feel like we have a safe umbrella, if you will.
- 1:58Well, when you stay in uncertainty, it does a lot of
- 2:02things to your biochemistry that are not great.
- 2:05So on a very basic level is why they say stress is the worst
- 2:09thing for your health. Well, it really is Because when
- 2:12you stress all that, that energy has to go somewhere and it
- 2:17shifts your biochemistry. So that's why people who are
- 2:20very stressed out have heart attacks.
- 2:23Typically it leads to other behaviors that aren't great as
- 2:26well, such as abuse of alcohol, abuse of food, abuse of drugs,
- 2:32abuse of sex, lots of different things.
- 2:35Because that stress, that is energy, and that energy has to
- 2:38go somewhere. So you can't just like ignore
- 2:42it. It's got to do, you got to
- 2:43transfer it into something. That's why if you quit smoking,
- 2:46let's say, often the person you're working with to help you
- 2:49quit smoking will say, well, we have to replace that with
- 2:51something. If you replace that habit with
- 2:53something, well, think of the habit as energy.
- 2:55That energy has to go somewhere. So uncertainty for us is a huge
- 3:03build up of energy that blocks us, it blocks our systems.
- 3:07And the more we focus on uncertainty, the more we
- 3:11actually get uncertainty. Because as you've heard me say
- 3:14and you will continue to hear me say, it's such an important
- 3:17factor to realize energy is everything and emotions are
- 3:21nothing but pure energy and their potential energy, right
- 3:25That can go in either direction. It can go left or right, it can
- 3:28go to the dark side, to the light side, however it is that
- 3:32you want to look at it, but their emotions are pure energy.
- 3:36So when we start focusing our attention on uncertainty and
- 3:43giving it undue attention too long of an A stint with it, we
- 3:48do ourselves psychological damage and we do ourselves
- 3:51physiological damage. So why am I bringing this up
- 3:55today? Well, it seems that lately
- 3:57again, here we go again. With all the drama of everything
- 4:01that's going on in the world, you can't escape it.
- 4:05It's always been this way. However, since we've had the
- 4:09pandemic, it's gotten more and more and more intense, and it
- 4:13seems to get more and more intense because they have to get
- 4:17our attention, because we have been desensitized.
- 4:19So everything is made into drama, everything is big,
- 4:22everything is huge. And we have to choose to dial it
- 4:27back in our heads and we have to decide how we want to show up
- 4:30and who we want to be. The fundamentals of this process
- 4:34are pretty simple. I can tell you shut the news
- 4:37off. I can tell you to do tactical
- 4:39things. I can say, you know, for those
- 4:41of you who want to be informed, you can dive in for one minute,
- 4:46set your timer and say, let me just take the USA TODAY version
- 4:49of the news and walk away. But even at that state, it
- 4:54doesn't mean you're letting it go afterwards.
- 4:56It doesn't mean that you're going about your day and you're
- 4:59not having it dwell inside of you, having it sit there and eat
- 5:03at you all day long, because that's what it does.
- 5:06So how do we actually live in with uncertainty?
- 5:09What do we do with it? Well, the fundamental piece that
- 5:13I think is so critically important is to constantly be
- 5:17monitoring your attention where it's going.
- 5:19If your attention and you find that your attention is
- 5:22constantly floating, to worry, If you find that your attention
- 5:25is constantly going to uncertainty, well, I don't know.
- 5:28I don't know. Listen to how many times a day
- 5:31you use the words. Well, I don't know because
- 5:33that's that actually denounced the fact that you are in
- 5:36uncertainty and you're kind of processing, looking for answers,
- 5:41but you don't know how to get there.
- 5:42And that in itself is stressful. You've got to become OK with not
- 5:47knowing. You've got to become OK with it
- 5:49doesn't matter how much I know or I don't know.
- 5:51What matters is that I'm OK when I do know.
- 5:56So for me, I'm hyper certainty driven.
- 5:59I want to know on a Monday what we're doing on Friday.
- 6:03I want to know where we're going to eat.
- 6:04I want to know how the whole year is going to lay out.
- 6:07I get very hyper focused on things like that and I have to
- 6:12work really hard personally on not driving everyone crazy
- 6:15around me because I might like certainty.
- 6:18But my husband does not even come close to that.
- 6:23So I have to realize it's his space too.
- 6:26And when I get over certainty driven, I push that to him and I
- 6:30look to him for answers. And he's a guy that's like OK
- 6:33with not knowing. He is, he is really great with
- 6:36uncertainty. He's just like, all right,
- 6:37whatever's going to happen is going to happen, and he can just
- 6:39check out and let it go. So the first thing you have to
- 6:43do is recognize you don't need to know everything.
- 6:47And it doesn't help to know everything.
- 6:49I remind myself constantly, this isn't something I need to know
- 6:52right now, but I do need to be healthfully prepared and taking
- 6:57care of myself. So if something does show up, I
- 7:00can be good to deal with it. The second thing is you need to
- 7:03monitor that internal dialogue and ask yourself how much am I
- 7:06saying? I don't know, I don't know, I
- 7:08don't know. And is that creating angst in my
- 7:11body so that you can stop that process and slow it down and say
- 7:14I don't need to know I am OK not knowing, I am OK not knowing.
- 7:21I am fully equipped to be able to figure this out on the fly.
- 7:26That's one of my favorite statements to tell myself I can
- 7:29figure this out on the fly. I'm good because I'm centered
- 7:32and I'm taking care of myself. And the third thing is really
- 7:36start to dial back how much you tap into things that bother you.
- 7:41It it becomes an addiction in itself.
- 7:43So shut the news off. Don't pay attention to
- 7:46everything because tomorrow is going to be the same thing and
- 7:48you can always catch up if you're someone who's really
- 7:51addicted to it. Just realize you could skip a
- 7:54whole week and come back and you'd be hearing the same crap
- 7:58all over again. So it's really important to pay
- 8:01attention to that. Dial it back, go to things that
- 8:04make you happier. Go to things that make it easier
- 8:07on your soul so that you don't have to deal with it non-stop
- 8:11and give yourself a little break and a little grace and realize
- 8:14this is a practice. This isn't going to happen
- 8:16overnight, but it's the beginning that I wanted to
- 8:19introduce you guys to and we will talk about it more.
- 8:22And this is awareness is the fundamental piece of it.
- 8:25So let's start there and I will see you guys tomorrow.
- 8:29Have a great day.
