Bikes and [rock music] rides! [laughs] That took one year off. [laughs] Hey everybody, you know that theme song.
• 0:18
It's time for Full Spectrum Cycling. I forgot what show number this is, 'cause I don't have my computer over here. 293. 293. 293. Yes. Think I was gonna... I was gonna say that. I better get my phone out.
• 0:31
I remember them saying 293 earlier. Yeah, I think I told you it was 293. Yeah. You'll have to lead the show, Michael. I don't have my phone. [laughs] I have no idea what we're doing here today. [laughs] Um,
• 0:40
so it's, uh, it's, uh, that's Tony over there. Yeah. Yeah. That's JK, that guy there. [laughs] Yeah. And then, uh... And today our guest in the studio from way over next door at- All the way [laughs]...
• 0:49
Amorphic Beer is Ron Hockersmith. Welcome to the show, Ron. Hey, wait, how do you say your last name? Thank you. I never knew that. Hockersmith. Hockersmith. Hockersmith. Got it. Got it. Okay, cool. Yeah, yeah.
• 0:59
So- I just know you as Ron. Yeah, Ron The other Ron we know who rides bicycles. Right? There's Ron, there's- And hopefully far less hairy than Chewy. There's Rons aplenty. There's Rons aplenty.
• 1:08
Did you ever know- It was a common name in the late '70s... did you ever know, uh, Ron Cannondale? No. He was a... Guess what he rode? Cannondale? That's exactly right. Oh [laughs] Kline? Did he ride a Kline?
• 1:17
Uh, he may have. Before [laughs] he got sued? All those Klines are basically beer cans with wheels on them pretty much.
• 1:24
[laughs] Anyway, so, uh, so Ron and a, and a couple of partners run the brewery that we mention almost every show, I think, over at Amorphic next door.
• 1:33
And by cracky, if it's not the best brewery in Milwaukee, I don't know what is. Thank you. Milwaukee? [laughs] It goes way beyond Milwaukee. It probably goes beyond Milwaukee. It goes- We...
• 1:42
I mean, we've won best IPA in the state two years in a row, and we're g- we're trying to win a third. Is that where that leggy, uh, leggy lamp a- Yeah... yeah... award comes from? That's a, that's a serious award.
• 1:51
[laughs] Yes, I- [laughs] Is that right? I always wondered [laughs] about that... w- when, when... Yeah, when I see it in the corner, and then I didn't see it in the corner for, like, a year, I'm like, "Hmm." Oh.
• 1:59
And then it returned, and it came back to me, and I was like, "Oh." You do brew a mean IPA. So what does it take to, uh, win a best in state IPA award? Well, it's actually complicated.
• 2:11
There's, there's kind of two ways to win. The first way to win is there's official judges. They've gone through certification. They have a, they have, literally have a certification for judging.
• 2:20
But the way you judge beer in every competition in the world, let's... Okay, maybe 99%, is of conformance to style. Oh, okay. Gotcha. Which is not my- Puritan rules? Which is not... I'm not a fan. No.
• 2:33
[laughs] So, like, if we enter this, it'll lose because it's slightly too sweet and not bitter enough, but it turns out that's how I fucking like it. Yeah. [laughs] So I don't care if we lose. That's...
• 2:43
So when we've won the best IPA in the state, there's actually two awards. There's two winners every year. One is from the judges, and the other one is from the people. Real people.
• 2:52
And we win the people one every year we've entered so far. Excellent. Right. Just fuck judges. [laughs] Yes. So is, is every flavor profile your, your concoction still? Yes.
• 3:04
I, I'm the only one that has ever designed any beer or process at Amorphic Beer s- so far. That's true. I remember that you had a... What was it? Uh, was it a fluffy?
• 3:15
W- you were doing some kind of AI generated- Mm-hmm... user generated flavor profiling that, "I like this. I don't like that. This tastes like..."
• 3:23
I don't know how your algorithm worked, but is that something you're still using? Well, this beer, as you see on the can, designed with in-house developed multidimensional optimization algorithms. There you go.
• 3:34
That is... This series, this is the- Those are just made up words... this is the sixth one. [laughs] Yeah.
• 3:39
We, we basically took a couple hundred parameters from the brewing process, um, and then, like, how fast the beers sell, how high Untappd ratings are, and told some algorithms we wrote to- Wow...
• 3:50
figure out how to make it better, and that's what this series is. And then I veto all the shit I think it's wrong about. [laughs] That's your, that's your prerogative, man. That's just ridiculous.
• 3:59
[laughs] It's good to be the king. Yeah. But- We actually started doing that before, like, ChatGPT became a thing. Mm. Um, and then everyone after that became a thing started coming in.
• 4:07
It's like, "Oh, so you, like, ask ChatGPT how to make an IPA?" I'm like, "Well, no, that would just give you the statistical average of the internet home brew recipe. That would be horrible." That's not what we do.
• 4:16
Likely. Right. Tony used to brew beer back in the olden times. I brewed a lot of beer. Al- most all of it bad. [laughs] Well, you know, all of it bad beer. I mean, it was drinkable, but not...
• 4:23
I mean- I dr- I brew all the bad beer... it was better than a Miller Lite, and I did brew predominantly IPAs, 'cause I mean, IPAs. [laughs] It's hard to brew good IPAs at home. It is, you know?
• 4:35
Having- You gotta have an immersion chiller at the very least... having half a million dollars of equipment, uh, makes it much easier. Still, yeah, I bet. You just, like, you press the buttons, and the oxygen stays out.
• 4:43
Not the Mr- It's a little more than that, man... not the cool Mr., that plastic Mr. Brew with the yeast packs? [laughs] It's, it's a little more than that, but yes. Really?
• 4:49
'Cause I still have one in the basement- Oh, God... that I haven't used. [laughs] So this, uh- So it's got about two decades old yeast packet in it. Nice. I'm sure it's fine. I bet it'll be good.
• 4:58
Uh, this show comes out on Thursdays, and what's happening on Thursday over at Amorphic is this particular beer is coming out on Thursday, isn't it? Oh, that, that is true, yes.
• 5:09
Uh, and we pulled this out of the, right out of the bright tank, so it's not even done or released. You see how it's not quite clear yet? You see that? See how it's... I can see Tony, like, barely.
• 5:18
It's- You can see your fingers if you put it up behind. Yeah, I can see that. So this is supposed to be crystal clear, and you can tell it's not done yet. So this only- Wow...
• 5:25
finished carbonating last night, and- So I have to wait two more fucking days for this to be clear? [laughs] Probably. [laughs] I can't wait. [laughs] I'll be here tomorrow. And that's just so I can conform to the style.
• 5:35
It's- Ah... it's actually very good. I like this a lot. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mild bitterness, but also fruity at the same, at the same time. And I like the fact that it's 5 point what is the ABV? 5.7 ABV. Nice.
• 5:45
Yeah, easily drinkable. Like it. That's, that's- Like it all the way around... almost a sessionable thing. Pretty close.
• 5:51
And it's called, uh, Dad Noises Escalate, and it's a sequel to a very popular beer we made, especially with brewers in the Milwaukee area. They were really into- It's a pretty beer, man... Dad Noises Intensify- Yeah...
• 6:02
which was named after I was on some hiking trip in Oregon with some friends, and- We all were really tired after a hike up Mount Hood, and then- Farting?...
• 6:10
somebody, like, got up and was like, "Ugh," and then- Oh, made the dad noise... anyway, two other people did it, and then, like, dad noises intensified. [laughs] That's how most of our beer names become a thing.
• 6:19
I like that. Well, it, it does- I do enjoy the naming... it does have some Letterkenny, you know- It does... angle to it because- I do enjoy the naming...
• 6:26
that was definitely a good couple episodes of Letterkenny, if not more...
• 6:29
taking a look at the, uh, at the menu at any release time, it's like, I'm just curious what's gonna come out of, in the creative process completely.
• 6:39
'Cause I'll get some of them, some of them I'll be going like, "I don't understand it, but I'm sure there's something- [laughs]... like, good and clever behind it that I'll appreciate." Agreed.
• 6:47
Half of them come from drunken conversations in the locker room after my hockey games. The- Understood... the entire team has access to the document where they just start putting them at the bottom.
• 6:55
Most of them are trash- Sure... but I eventually go through and find the good ones. Oh, name-wise? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Awesome.
• 7:00
So we kind of jumped right into the beer thing right at the beginning of the show there, full whole hog. That was awesome. Um, but Ron hasn't always made beer.
• 7:08
In fact, this is, you've been doing this for four years, three years as a actual business? We've been open for just over three years, but- Okay...
• 7:15
it took us about eight months to build the thing, so we're coming up on four years And you were a brewer at Company. For a year, yep. Yep, so- Yep... I mean, he's got- And I was a home brewer for 20 years before that.
• 7:24
  Yeah.
• 7:24
'Cause when I moved here from the West Coast, to be honest, in 2003, the beer scene in Milwaukee was atrocious Which is really funny, 'cause that's the second beer scene, 'cause I started brewing beer in the early '90s in, [laughs] in Milwaukee.
• 7:36
Well, that was, like, the second beer scene, 'cause the first one was in, like, 1840. Well, yeah, there's that too, but yeah. Back there in the olden times, or...
• 7:43
Yeah, we used to actually have a pretty good selection of home brewing supply stores in Milwaukee- Mm-hmm... and then they just slowly dwindled to nothing. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. It happens, it happens.
• 7:54
So you weren't always a brewer. You've done some other stuff. You're, actually, he's an actual, or was an actual rocket scientist. It's not ro- well, not, [laughs] I don't know. Not rockets.
• 8:04
I, I was an engineer for a long, uh, a long time. I designed, uh, uh, gas turbine engines for, for airplanes, uh, including the 777, the F-35, a joint strike fighter, and some other things.
• 8:15
Uh- That's close enough to a rocket... it's just, it's actually, yeah- Was that Ball? Was that Ball Aerospace, or was that Boeing? No, that wa- no, we, our customer was Boeing- Okay...
• 8:23
'cause Boeing doesn't make the engines. This is GE. So I worked for a supplier. Uh, actually, no, I worked for GE too, but this was, uh, actually Allied Signal, which became Honeywell Aerospace. Okay. I know them. Yeah.
• 8:32
Uh, 'cause they were in Phoenix, and they were right out, if you ever fly into Phoenix, the north side of the north-most runway, that's just all, that's where I got- There you go...
• 8:39
that's where I learned how to be an engineer, I would say. Uh, then I moved to Milwaukee chasing a job and a lady, neither one of which I have anymore. [laughs] Happens.
• 8:48
And I worked for GE Healthcare for 14 years, uh, designing, like, uh, computed tomography things, uh, x-rays- Right... things like that. Ron So-... le Francais. Yeah. That's when I was going to France a lot. Right.
• 9:00
So- France... sorry, I said it wrong. Yeah. Uh. Well- So did you retire from these other jobs? 'Cause you were talking about how you're...
• 9:09
We talk- Ron's a, was, is an avid cyclist, and when I first met him when the brewery was first starting, he was saying, "Yeah, I'm doing about- [laughs]... 8,000 miles a year." I was, yes.
• 9:19
At that time, and- That was my peak year, though. Okay. Well, it's still an, you know- [laughs]... that's, it's an impressive- 'Cause I, 'cause I was basically goofing off...
• 9:25
while, while other people were doing work building the brewery. [laughs] Um, but, uh, since the brewery's been taking up some of your time, that number has dwindled. Significantly, yes.
• 9:36
Uh, so what- I, we, last year I think I managed to get to 3,200, and it was, it was a challenge. That's still an impressive number, dude. [laughs] Mm-hmm.
• 9:43
Is that, is that basically riding from home to work and back kind of thing?
• 9:47
I mean, that's, that did, that used to be such a small percentage, but now that has become a much higher percentage, and I find myself, instead of, like, trying to go to that group ride on Thursday night and doing whatever I need to do to, like, hang on to the group one or group A, what- or whatever it's called and whatever advantage I need, uh, now I just enjoy, like, riding through Lake Shore State Park and- Yep...
• 10:11
coming up the oak leaf on a steel bike that just feels great. It's, it's slow as fuck compared to my other bikes, but- Mm. Right, right, right... actually- Your carbon fiber, but that's different...
• 10:19
I now pr- prefer just- To dawdling along. Yeah. Smelling the smelling the roses. Yeah, it used to be like- And I'm seeing- It's like, let me just stop by- I'm seeing Ron-... the cool red light-up store sign-...
• 10:28
dawdling along at, like, 18 Yeah... and then, I don't know, what the hell is Sa- what is it called now? Sail Loft? I don't know. I'll just stop in there to see what the hell is going on. I've never been in there.
• 10:37
Right by- I know... Altoons. It used to be Riptide, and then n- now it's Sail Loft. Oh, right out in Sail Loft. Oh, I've never been in there either. Yeah. Well, I mean, I, that's the thing. Forest for the trees.
• 10:46
Sometimes you just, like, g- oh, hey, you know, and sometimes you gotta stop, which I don't. They used to have an outdoor bar. That's where Rolly, the BMX- Oh, yep, I remember that...
• 10:54
BMX, uh, super back flip kid- Yep, that's a, that's a cool spot... used to tend bar out there, and yeah, I'd be like, "Oh, yes. You make it easier for me. I don't actually have to walk on premises." [laughs] Right on.
• 11:06
So your, what's your new plan to ride more and work less? Yeah, so- [laughs]...
• 11:12
I'm spending, uh, I think too much time, I probably spend 70 hours a week just in the building south of here, and it's more than I want to spend- [laughs]... even though of course I'm doing what I want, I want to do.
• 11:23
So I, I need to, I just wanna be here less often to be able to do other things like ride the bike or- Mm-hmm... go hiking or go on more snowboarding trips or whatever it is I like to do. Haul. Yeah, we were, [laughs]
• 11:34
we- Until Joe said fucking snowboarding... we had talked a couple weeks ago about, 'cause you, you went to, was it France you went or Switzerland? Where'd you go for your trip? You were the French Alps. Both.
• 11:41
It depended on which lift we could get on. Yeah, right. That was the deciding- Which was the best story. Yeah.
• 11:44
But it was, it was less expensive to fly over there and stay there and do the thing and pay for the lift tickets and all that stuff- Mm-hmm... than to go to Vail or wherever. Or just about anywhere in Colorado. Anywhere.
• 11:56
Because, because in the United States, there's two companies, Alterra Mountain Resorts and Vail Mountain Resorts, that basically own almost every place there is you can possibly go, including, like, Alpine Valley I know, but, like, Wilmot Mountain- Lichfield...
• 12:07
south of Milwaukee is owned by Vail Resorts. Really? Yes. That's weird because- Yeah... that's- Vail Resorts- That's, no... are you looking at me right now? That's, what's way better is a- Mount La Crosse...
• 12:15
motocross track at Wilmot than it is a ski hill... oh, please tell me Mount La Crosse is still the innocent.
• 12:19
So they're, they just, they've just moved to this model which- It's just so expensive to go unless you're a local, and- Sure... we decided- And even then... well, let's try the Alps because...
• 12:29
So we, the place we went, it's 229 lifts, which is like- Mm. Wow... eight times more than- Holy fuck... than Vail. That's- There's 600 kilometers of trails.
• 12:39
It's in two countries, and you can't even begin to get everywhere. You might end up 40 kilometers away just by, by the time you're at lunch- [laughs]... and you have to like start- So-... working your way back.
• 12:49
Yeah, yeah. That's awesome. But it w- guess what, uh... So a lift ticket at Vail or Steamboat or Winter Park or, or even Alta or Snowbird is approaching $300 a day now. Oh, shit. What do you think- I can't do that.
• 13:03
So now- I'm not back there... I've kind of given away the punchline- I, I-... but guess what it is in the Alps? I open it and it's like 50 bucks. 51 euro. Come on. Which is almost the same as a dollar these days. Right.
• 13:10
Right. So- Yeah, that's- Holy shit... so even though we had to pay 200 extra dollars versus flying to, say, Bozeman, Montana, we saved way more on lift tickets and the lodging was cheaper. Sure. I'd say the food- But-...
• 13:23
was cheaper... but you had to replace your snowboard 'cause everybody kept running it over. [laughs] There's a very, there's a different culture, like in the lift lines. There's, there isn't really lines.
• 13:30
It's just kinda like push your way to the front. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, you kinda nudge, nudge, nudge. Yeah. Uh, there's no order, and then they just kept, "Oh, you moved up? Bang. You moved up? Bang."
• 13:40
And the, most of the Brits, the Brits were... We got annoyed by the Brits by the end. We were also called Na- We left them for a reason... we were also called Nazi fucks. Oh, really?
• 13:47
Uh, we were grocery shopping and someone came out and were like, "Did you hear those guys? Did you hear them with an American accent? Those fucking Nazi fucks." So- [sucks in breath] Shit...
• 13:57
pro- We're escaping that, okay? Yeah. Pro-tip, put the Canadian flag on. We literally told people- Oh. I tried that, dude. It doesn't work. I d- I got away. I told- You did?...
• 14:04
I told people we were from Toronto and it worked. Oh, I got so busted. We're from Toronto, eh? [laughs] My, so here's my deal. This is how I got busted. I was in Amsterdam, and a gentleman asked to borrow...
• 14:16
Sorry, this is inappropriate for whatever. Um- Why are you looking at me?... a gentleman asked to borrow our lighter, and I'm like, "Oh, sure. Here." And I hand him our lighter.
• 14:24
We're in a coffee shop, and he hands it back to me. He's like, "You're a good American." And I'm like, "Well, what makes you think I'm American?" And he looks at me. He's like, "You just packed that bong- [laughs]...
• 14:38
with all marijuana." And I'm like, "Yeah." He's like, "Only Americans smoke bongs straight." [laughs] I'm like, "Really?" I'm like, "Ooh, showing my ignorance, but okay. Yeah, I'm an American." But yeah. Busted.
• 14:53
I was totally busted. It happened- That guy-... multiple times in Holland... that guy's like some kind of private dick or something. Well- Probably. I, I, yeah, but yes, it, you do not- If that was our-...
• 15:02
especially right now, you do not [laughs] want to tell people- If that's your tell-... you're American... that's not a bad tell to have. [laughs] Yeah. Just saying. [laughs] Right on. Right on.
• 15:11
As we were going up the, we were in the, we were in the shuttle thing going up into the mountains, and there was cyclists coming down, like flying down the Alps, right? Mm-hmm.
• 15:20
And, uh, the other people in the party are not as cycling familiar, I guess I'll say, and they were like, "Oh my God, that's so dangerous. How are they doing that?" Ah, they're having a blast.
• 15:30
But they're, first of all, they're going probably as fast or faster than the cars that are coming, coming down, but also, like everyone there are just used to there being cyclists, and it- Right... and it was...
• 15:39
I don't, I don't think those people were worried at all. Like, even when I'm here at like Holy Hill and there's,
• 15:46
I'm gonna say it, douchebags in a Corvette or whatever like whipping around the corner, like I am, I am a little worried. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, I'd totally be worried.
• 15:52
[laughs] Yeah, but there, there's, there are, they know there's going to be cyclists. It's part of the culture and it's a thing. So these were road cyclists, not- These were road cyclists... not, not mountain bikers.
• 16:00
Yes. I don't know if that's allowed on this podcast. Yeah, we'll allow it. We'll allow it. Well, th- this is Full Spectrum Cycling- I have a road bike... Andrew. This isn't- I have a road bike... this isn't Full...
• 16:06
[laughs] This isn't fat, this isn't fat bike Andrew. I don't even really have a road bike. I have a gravel bike that I call- Is it a gravel bike?... a road bike. That's a road bike. No, but yes.
• 16:14
Mine is specifically, the geometry is even specifically the same as a Cervélo R3, so it's a road bike geometry. It's a road bike. But then it can fit fat tires, so I have- It's an all-road bike... two things on it.
• 16:22
It's an all-road bike. I have two wheel sets. Full spectrum road bike. So you throw 47s on or something? Uh, exactly, 47s. Yeah. Yeah, I figured. Yeah. Yeah, that's what- All right...
• 16:31
or I have like aerodynamic 28 tubeless road tires that if I wanna go like compete with the bros at the gr- group ride, that's what I do, and then they make fun of me- [laughs]... for having a gravel bike.
• 16:40
So who, who do you group ride with? Where are these bros from? Are you... [laughs] Well, and that's what was kinda cracking me up.
• 16:45
Like, and with the group ride, and like, oh, wave one, wave two, or like- Well, the most common one I used to do prior to the... or I did it every week was- Yeah... I'd ride from Bay View up to- Tuesday night rides?...
• 16:54
up through here. No, Thursday night at, uh, Fox Point Wheel and Sprocket. Okay. Yeah. Oh, okay. Ah, the Sprockets. Mm-hmm. Spro- Spro- Um, speaking of, we're gonna go into the gravel. Uh, Colby did in fact order
• 17:05
a Ty Lisie- Linsky Linsky Linsky Linsky Um, that's a really good deal. Speaking of Linsky- Three, three grand and change- Yeah, no kidding... for a full Ti bike. [laughs] Th- that took all the- That'll take 47s?
• 17:18
Yeah, they took all the dealer margin out. I had a friend sell it for less than that. Yeah. Oh. So speaking of titanium and Linsky, because that will come into the conversation even though... You can show this.
• 17:29
We, so I got the Bearclaw showed up today. This is the, this is the Bearclaw Bruno. Let's see, Tony, which one should we... That's, that's pretty good. I'm gonna hold them all. Yeah, there you go.
• 17:39
Um, so this is Bearclaw Bruno. It's titanium. It's, uh, it's awesome. It's got, uh, internal routing and fancy yokeses.
• 17:46
And it, uh, one of the neatest things about it, which other bikes have obviously, but not everything, is that it has a rocker dropout so you can do different drivetrains.
• 17:55
What if you wanna do a big ass, uh, uh, Rohloff back there? You could do that. What if you wanna make it a single speed for some Ron retarded reason- [laughs]... you can do that. Not you, Ron. Not you, Ron...
• 18:05
the other Ron. No, this is a Chewie thing. Um, but, but- [laughs] You know I just want... You saw- [laughs] I haven't had gears for 20 years. Dude. Yeah, right.
• 18:13
So the reason I wanted to bring up Linsky, though, is that the bike that almost all the parts to go on this are coming from is the Chumba Ursa Major titanium. Which was made by Linsky.
• 18:22
Which was made by Linsky, which will be available to a smallish person, 5'7", 5... I mean, I ride it and I'm 5'8". But it's on the very top end. I just like a little tighter bike.
• 18:34
So somebody that's a little smaller, 5'6", 5'4", whatever, this would be a perfect bike for you. Let me know. It's for sale. I'll have it on the show next week and we can show it.
• 18:42
It has- But it was a Lynskey built one... is less than 500 miles on it. It does not have less than 500 miles [laughs] It has less than 500 miles. On the frame it doesn't matter. It's, it, uh, titanium lasts forever.
• 18:51
I'm just saying, you, I've- Yeah. Its fatigue life is quite long. No, I rode it a lot more than that [laughs]. I know this from my aerospace days. Dude, I've had it, I've had it since 2017.
• 18:58
Those welds are also very good on that bike. Huh? Yeah, I've had it since 2017, so I've definitely ridden it more than 500 miles [laughs] I beg to differ. Also, just on beaches on Sunday, and then sometimes in the snow,
• 19:10
and whatnot. Okay. And I've probably put 50 miles on it. Yeah. Well, it's, anyway. Eh, 30. It's, uh, it's a, it's a great bike. And, uh, you can't get them anymore so stick that in your pipe and smoke it. Okay. Mr.
• 19:23
Anton Bryce, speaking of ski school, that was a line from the movie. Another ski school reference here- Oh, you're talking about skiing... on the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast.
• 19:31
One of the top rota- in my rotating top five movies of all time. Ski School with Dean Cameron. So have we talked about Milwaukee at all? Well, coming up this weekend is the old, uh, Mama Tried- Mama Tried...
• 19:42
and Flat Out Friday weekend of your motorcycling madness. Starting even tonight, in the past, as we speak, things are happening all the time. On Thursday. This releases on Thursday. What does? The podcast.
• 19:55
Internet time is Thursday right now. Yeah, so, so a couple days. We're talking to the future. So we keep talking about future, it's Thursday. Got it. The past. [laughs] I'm, uh, doing this because I'm opening-
• 20:07
All right, I'm just about to get to the can too, so I could do that. Ron, talk about the can. Talk about the can of beer. This is different can. The sentient IPA. Can of beer 6.0. Yeah.
• 20:15
Well, we talked about this one a little earlier. This is the one that we developed with some algorithms we wrote. The can art is amazing. It's from- Mm-hmm... like, uh, Brandon Minga from House of Rad.
• 20:24
He did it, he did it for 1.0. We've been using it since then. It's probably one of my favorite cans. Uh, it uses a unique hop called Belma. Not very popular. I like it. Belma? Belma. Okay.
• 20:35
Like- Not like Scooby-Doo Velma, but Belma... no. And that, and not like Velma from The Weeds. Well, I was gonna say because there was a bloodhound in the shop yesterday named Velma. That's what made me think of it. No.
• 20:43
At, at Amorphic yesterday. Belma has, it tastes like strawberries and cream. Mm-hmm. But only us, in the Midwest anyway, we use it and so does Hop Butcher, a Chicago brewery.
• 20:51
We apparently are the only people that like it. Where is it grown? It's grown in the Pacific Northwest. Okay. So- But only at one farm in- Oh, interesting... the- Seattle or Port? Port. Okay.
• 21:01
Lin- well, south of there Portland. Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. And- I actually had a hops farm. I don't know if you know that. In your backyard? No, out in Exonia. Oh. Exonia.
• 21:13
So the Sentient Series is a sweeter IPA, 'cause our algorithms told us that's what Midwesterners like. Mm-hmm. Which, uh, checks out. And it uses Belma, 'cause it uses, uh, it has- Well-... it has some terps or terpenes.
• 21:23
You know- Yep... hops are related to cannabis, so it uses some of the same terminology, um, that make, give it the strawberry and cream flavor.
• 21:30
This one also has Motueka from New Zealand, which is like lemon and lime, so I think it tastes like strawberries, lemons, and limes. I agree. Mm-hmm. After my initial sip, it's- I'm gonna- It's definitely fruity...
• 21:40
I'm gonna swallow. Let's, uh, let's have the, uh, the manufacturer's happy hour, uh, koozie. Mm-hmm. So this is the second podcast Ron's been on in, uh- In a week... in, in a week.
• 21:53
And- In, uh, maybe the third or fourth whatever, yeah. [laughs] The last one- Coming in hot and fast... so the last one was, um, man- what is it called? Manufacturing something something. The Happy Hour. Happy Hour.
• 22:02
Manufacturing Happy Hour Podcast. Happy Hour. Yeah. Yeah. So, and I didn't know such a thing existed, but apparently it has since 2016. Mm-hmm. So- And I met this gentleman from, uh, Three Minute Thesis in the tech room.
• 22:13
Oh. I don't usually see you guys in there, 'cause it's very, it's, unfortunately, very popular. Yeah, so we don't- Birds aren't real... I'm not in there because it's way too crowded.
• 22:22
[laughs] Uh, but he- But I have seen Three Minute Thesis... he's presented several times. Cool. Really? And he's, and he's not Joe? No. [laughs] No, he's not Joe Finney. No, he's not Joe Finney.
• 22:30
The, the winner, Joe Finney. Uh, but he, uh... Like, my favorite one he did, he actually lost. He was at, he was, he was one of the all-stars, so he was at Three Minute Thesis All-Stars- That's very good...
• 22:39
at, at the Oriental Theater. Yummy... and, uh- Oh... his, his topic was the only two legitimate forms of art are ska and pro wrestling. Yep, yep. I saw that as being- [laughs]... at the Wisconsin Hockey.
• 22:51
I wish I was there for that. [laughs] That's such a great argument. I, I remember, I was like, "Oh." He compared, like, Operation Ivy to Randy "Macho Man" Savage. Oh, yeah. And I [laughs] Get it, brother. Come on.
• 23:03
Snap into a Slim Jim. I like both of those. Da-da-da-da-da-da. I like both of those. Sound system gonna make it do- oh Operation Ivy more so than Snap into a Slim Jim, but- Well, they, they, uh, can be used [laughs]...
• 23:11
the sound system gonna make it go now So that's how I met him, and then, uh- Pick it up. Pick it up. Pick it up... somehow
• 23:17
he ended up meeting someone else that I know through playing hockey, and then they combined and s- discovered they both knew me, and then they forced me to go on their podcast. [laughs] So, uh, so what was the format?
• 23:27
What did you guys talk about? Was it as slap dash skullduggery-ish as us- As us... or was it more formatted and did he have a, a big page full of questions that were thoughtful and- [laughs] A script...
• 23:38
very, very well, very well researched and all that stuff? There were, there were some thoughtful questions written in advance. Um- Full of thought...
• 23:43
but they wanted to talk about how my boring corporate career, how that had translated to running a small business. Mm-hmm. And specifically in the beer industry.
• 23:53
So we talked about things like if you heard of, like, Lean Six Sigma and- Sure... Manufacturing. We talked about things that Alan and I- I'm, I'm certified in all that crap- Oh, nice... and it does no good for me at all.
• 24:01
[laughs] We actually use that crap. A m- [laughs] A lot of it is just common sense, but- Right... we, we joke about it and use it every day in Little Tiny Amorphic Beer even. Mm-hmm.
• 24:10
And we talked a lot about that kind of stuff. Right on. Cool. I guess I'm just not a corporate guy. Well, I know that about you. Well, the last time I- I know that about you, Craig. You're not a corporate guy...
• 24:18
the last time I worked for a corporate overlord was, I think, 1995 maybe. So I've managed to stumble- That's a long time ago... I've managed to stumble through life on my own since then.
• 24:28
Well, with the help of Wendy, of course, at home- Mm-hmm... the, the lovely bride and all that stuff. But, uh- Otherwise, I, I, I ain't working for no other person- Mm-hmm... except for, well, customers obviously.
• 24:38
But- I'm proud to leave it in the rear view window too. Yeah. Not me, man. But not, not, not as long as you. I'm- No, and I wasn't- I'm beholden to the state...
• 24:45
I never, I never got to where you guys are [laughs] I am beholden to the state. The state- I-... I have done no wrong, at least for the next three years- [laughs]... or something of that nature.
• 24:53
Why you gotta turn Scottish? Did you hear that? I don't know. He just does that from time to time. I just fall into, like, every... Yeah, so they don't recognize me. [laughs] Yeah.
• 25:01
I got, I got- You know, they got algorithms that listen to every podcast on YouTube now, so- Oi, is it, boy? I'm shooting for- [laughs]... five years- Try to keep our-...
• 25:09
and I go to a regular job, like a fun job Now go- You had a fun job working in the bike shop for a while I did- [laughs]... but it didn't pay anything. Well- Now I need to kind of support a child...
• 25:18
that's, that's the bike industry in general. Well, didn't you, like- I got stuck with a child. Well, no. Yeah, you retired. Yeah, you retired. I did. You retired- [laughs]... and then you- And then I got a child.
• 25:27
Then you got a child, then you got a- They handed me this child... then you got a Denardo job, and then, and then you got a back to UWM job. And I'm like, "Oh, fuck, I have a child. I have to go back to work."
• 25:36
[laughs] So I did. Man, yep. Mm. Good on you, mate. But you're helping the- Again... planet's future. Hopefully. Yeah. And if he isn't, he's gonna become an all-star wrestler and just destroy everything.
• 25:48
Or a ska musician. Or a sk- Yeah. I would much rather him be a ska musician. Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up. Pick it up. But he's huge.
• 25:56
You know, I, I actually read your, your webpo- And so I have a friend who's retiring. Mm-hmm. And I'm like, "Well, hey, look, the indoor farmers market is coming up," and she's getting ready to move out to Portland.
• 26:10
I'm like, "Let's get together, have some beers. I'll bring the family and the dog, and we'll all hang out." So then I sent her a link to your webpage, and it clearly says, "Well-behaved children and dogs."
• 26:24
No, it says well- So I'm really sorry... it says, "Well-behaved beings of all species." Oh, it doesn't say that now? Yeah. Okay. So I apologize, 'cause I have nothing... I mean, my son is not well-behaved.
• 26:34
[laughs] He's a fucking tornado. Your dog's barely well-behaved. My dog is... She's good. I didn't- Don't give my dog shit... I didn't receive any complaints. Bitch.
• 26:42
The staff normally complains about- He almost opened a valve- Really?... on one of the tanks, dude. Oh. I caught him. He could've ruined the IP. That would've been $10,000.
• 26:51
I would've been writing you a fat fucking check. Worse than that is you couldn't drink it. Yeah, exactly. I'd been writing you a fat fucking check. [laughs] I was like, "Dude, no."
• 27:00
I think there was a day when it was like daycare in there, and there was more kids than adults, and that was sort of a- Saturday early afternoons, that's a thing. Yeah. Yeah. There was a lot of kids. Love it.
• 27:08
A lot of kids. I love it. That's the brewery scene. Yep. I mean, if you wanna- It's Wisconsin. We're not trying to be Art Bar. Right. I love Art Bar- Thank God... but we're not trying to be Art Bar.
• 27:17
But, but if you- I know... if you try to get, um... Oh, what are those? Like, the bumper, like, bumper bowling. You get the, like, just those- The things you fill the-... little bounce. Oh, no, as boundaries.
• 27:27
Like, oh, no, the little- Oh [laughs]... is that a little kid running this way? So what, what we do to deal- And once you funnel them-... with this situation and the staff- You can just funnel them like a bumper bowl...
• 27:34
'cause we have that event space in the back. Yeah. And if there's no event, the staff just opens it up, and naturally it just occurs. Every kid wants to play there. There's just a couple of toys back there.
• 27:43
There's, like, a Tonka truck or two. Yeah, that's all you need. And every family with kids goes back there, and it becomes, like, the daycare center back there, and the not- I like it...
• 27:50
daycare center up front, and everyone is happy. That works well. So that's what we've been doing on Saturday afternoons. Very good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That makes... Yes. Until tank child shows up. [laughs] Tank child.
• 28:01
Tank child. And that's in more ways than one. Built like a tank. Built- Likes to touch tanks... volume, volume as well. He's a large human being. Is he a hundred? Is he a hundo yet? No, he's 95. How old? Five.
• 28:12
At 95 pounds at five. More than I was entering high school. [laughs] Not joking. That's a serious child. He's a large human being. He got into the mosh pit at, uh, uh, Guided by V- Yep, and had a great time.
• 28:24
Oh, Guided by Voices. Guided by Voices had a mosh pit? It was, oh, yeah. And, uh, the Badgers barbecue. Because the child, because of the child. Yeah, the child kind of created one. He started it. Oh.
• 28:31
'Cause he was chasing a ball. That was a ball. And it went in. Was it a ball or a balloon? It was a- Oh, no, it was a beach ball... beach ball. Yeah. They got in there, and it's- But it was like boom, boom, boom...
• 28:38
boom, boom, boom. But he's like, "That's- All of a sudden-... he's like, "That's my beach ball." And he would just- And he's, he's getting it no matter what... bash his way through and get it. Yeah.
• 28:43
And then he'd have it, and then- Bash his way out... somebody like- He's totally thinking mosh pit. I told him about a ball... somebody would pop it out of his hand, and he'd be like, "Goo, goo, goo, goo, goo, goo."
• 28:48
Yeah, and he wasn't having it. Yeah, he's a tank. That was awesome. He's, he's a tank. [laughs] He's a great little kid. And that was a good- And thank you for letting him-... that was a great show too, boy...
• 28:55
hang out at your place, because he definitely loves being here. That was at WMUC, uh, bar- Yeah... Backyard Barbecue. Backyard Barbecue. Yeah. I, I got, I got tickets to see Bob Mould.
• 29:03
I'm, I'm gonna, I'm gonna put the, the picture I took of my... I finally got my stereo working in my car since my factory one crapped out, 91.7 on every button. Ding, ding, ding. Yep, as it should be.
• 29:13
[laughs] Um- I did later go in and put in a couple other ones- Pr-... but I thought that was cool. Pretty excited. That goes on the bottom layer. Yeah. Right, yeah, for sure.
• 29:20
Yeah, he's- Just in case, in case there's a passenger that goes, "Oh, oh, what's on this one? The- Nothing... no, I want to hear... No." Nothing. Da, da, da, da, da.
• 29:26
I, I haven't found out if it actually has a dual layer. It's six of them that I've so far found so far. They should all be WMUC. It's, that's what the- Just that simple... that's what the picture says. It's awesome.
• 29:34
And as far as... I don't know how this happened, but the, the radio crapped out. It would play for eight seconds and then shut off for two seconds, and then play for eight seconds, and nothing for two.
• 29:44
Some weird thing- A gatch or something... there's something inside. You can take it apart and solder or replace some part. Mm.
• 29:50
But the FM radio hadn't worked for a long time, and I'm like, I thought it was because the car wash ripped the antenna off the car. No? No, 'cause the new radio works great.
• 29:59
I'm like, well, that was like a bonus, because I wasn't expecting it. I wanna be able to make calls when I'm going up to Hayward. I wanna listen to music. That's why I have the thing in the car. Seems to make sense.
• 30:09
Yeah. You go to- The fact, but the fact that the radio works again is super awesome. You go to Hayward for biking? Uh, yeah. My, uh- Or Helen... our, uh, Celie Dave is a, a regular on the show, and, uh, he's my
• 30:20
now co-conspirator at fatbike.com. He lives in, uh, Celie, which is between Hayward- Yeah... and Cable. So right by the old Sawmill Saloon up there. I like that place.
• 30:32
Well, all, all of- I, I go up there to ride the gravel bike. It's like- Of course you do... there's, like, hundreds of miles of just ride around it. Incredibly great gravel. Oh, yes. Yeah. Yeah.
• 30:40
That's what they're known for. You can blame the dairy industry in Wisconsin for the lack of gravel roads here, because if you go over to Iowa- They want them all paved... that's what they got...
• 30:47
paved roads Gravel everywhere Oh, is that all? All over the place 'Cause there's no melt. Yes. Yeah. Or eggs. But the hills will, the hills are serious. I, I- Yeah... went on a beer tourism trip to Dubuque. No.
• 30:57
Oh, yeah Derby queue. No, where is Toppling Goliath? Am I m- Decorah Decorah Decorah, yeah.
• 31:02
In Decorah That place is insane And all, and all the other friends were like, "Well, we're gonna go do, like, this little two-mile hike." And I'm like, "Well, I'm gonna go ride 75 miles by myself on gravel roads."
• 31:10
[laughs] And, uh, uh- Well, getting out of Decorah is a two and a half mile climb. Yeah That's like 600 vertical feet [laughs] Did you realize that?
• 31:17
[laughs] Looking at the Garmin like 7,000 vertical feet later, I was like, "Oh, I'm, I'm, I don't know that I'm gonna make it. I need to find an exit plan fast." [laughs] Plan B, baby.
• 31:25
'Cause I was supposed to meet them at Toppling Goliath for after ride and hike beers. Was this when it was on top of the hill or on the bottom of the hill? The, the br- Toppling Goliath.
• 31:33
Is it the mega huge stupend- It's the mega huge one, yeah. Yeah. This was, like, last year.
• 31:36
Yeah, 'cause the, when, when it was down in, in town it was great because they were small and it was kinda like you guys are now- But now that's a craft beer bar pizza place thing. Right, Pilot or whatever it's called.
• 31:45
I don't know. But I, uh, that was my overnight stop when I was on the road for a wholesale bicycle parts company. I would always end in Decorah because those guys are beasts.
• 31:56
You wanna be a fast mountain biker, you ride with those guys.
• 31:59
I, I would put some of the guys in town against just about anybody that's not a pro and be like, "That guy's gonna give you a hard time, I guarantee you," and he's 50. Mm-hmm. He's 60.
• 32:10
[laughs] You know, these guys aren't, they're just, they're just fast 'cause they ride every day, and it's surrounded by a rim canyon that's, like, 450 vertical feet, so you're climbing all the way down.
• 32:18
Gotta do it or you're walking. Yeah, as soon as I left Decorah, I didn't really have time to plan. I mean, I had a route and I didn't look at the elevation.
• 32:26
As soon as I left, like you said, it was, like, immediately just, like, straight up gravel, 450, 500 feet. Yeah. And then- Whoosh... and then down, up, down, up, down, up.
• 32:33
Yeah, well it, once, if you can carry your speed, those down, up, down, ups are fun. No, not if it's like 500 feet- Well, you can-... down, up, down, ups...
• 32:40
if you're going to, like, Bluffton [laughs] When you're not used to them- If you're going to, like-... so you're not preparing for the up...
• 32:43
like, going to Bluffton or something, they're, they're pretty rolly and you're like brap and then, yeah, you're three quarters of the way up and you're starting to be like, "Now I gotta put some effort into it," but...
• 32:52
[laughs] I like to- Yeah... when I met him back at Toppling Goliath eventually, they're like, "Oh yeah, we did this, like, 2.5 mile hike." [laughs] Oh, that sounds tough.
• 33:00
Well, if you ever go back there, I got guys you can ride with. They know everything about that whole area. They're- Well, I might fall behind. What's this, Greg? Uh, Lefty Lucy?
• 33:10
Uh, I think it was a, it was a band somewhere. Where did we go? There was a band called Lefty Lucy. I think. Uh, yes. That was, um, the Vegas a couple weeks ago. Oh, right on, yeah.
• 33:21
Um, All Messed Up this last weekend was fucking awesome. Wendy and I went- I heard that. I heard that... Wendy and I went both nights.
• 33:27
I think I saw 7 of the 16 bands, mostly 'cause I didn't wanna stay there past 11:00 at night.
• 33:32
Uh, but it was very good, and it was fun and entertaining, and I think every city ought to do this that has any kind of music scene because the deal is right around Halloween
• 33:43
you start entering, you're, you're like, "I wanna be a part of this." And then they draw, so 64 people enter, well, actually a lot more people, but 64 people get drawn,
• 33:52
and you just get thrown in a random band with somebody else. So there's a drummer, a bass player, a guitar player, there's vocalist. Boom, there you go, and you don't know those people. Make a song.
• 33:59
Maybe you have to write originals, three originals, and do a cover, and you have to do a crowd participation thing, which- Wow... from what I saw, Pink Pony, whatever the fuck that song is, Chapman Room. Pink Pony Club?
• 34:11
Pink Pony Club got everybody going. It was like, "Pink Pony Club, ooh, ooh." There's a killer- [laughs]... um- I don't know... uh, jungle metal cover of that. Mm. It's absolutely incredible.
• 34:22
It's like- All pops and bones... okay, this is good. Yeah. 'Cause I do not like that song, but I really like a metal cover [laughs] of it. Yeah. That was like, well, with that Shiver West 24 that you did. Yeah.
• 34:32
Or you- Yeah... I don't know who it, I know you were involved. That was me. Yeah, it was on, but God's Statue. And, and maybe we went to, uh, Dream, no, Truly Spoken. Yeah. Uh, that w- And they do the cover, yep...
• 34:41
but that was kinda like there was all those instruments, and there was just random bands forming and playing. It was that- No, okay... the story you told reminded me of that. Yeah.
• 34:47
  > Yeah, now it's gonna be stuck in my head- Yeah, I know. I know... all freaking day long. I'm stuck with, I have a daughter, man. [laughs] Fuck, this sucks. If you wanna ride, ride a white horse.
• 34:58
All right. I'm giving you a different earworm. Thank you.
• 35:00
Thank you for that one 'cause otherwise it would be, > Ride the white pony > I don't know that thank God. Stop. > Stop. Stop.
• 35:10
  > [laughs] My name is Michael Finnegan. All right, now, now it's gonna s- I got hairs on my chinny-chin-yin. [laughs] All right.
• 35:22
The wind came out and blew them on again. See how this can, see how this can devolve immediately? This has gone downhill really fast. It's probably 'cause of this. Oh. Could be 'cause of this.
• 35:29
I'm only halfway done, so I've got a lot more to go. Uh, well, Ron, uh, any- I'm at, I'm at the end of this one...
• 35:35
any, I, we, I don't know, we just kinda bashed the ball all over the court here, but anything you wanna talk about before we wrap this sucker up? Oh.
• 35:43
Besides come and drink the Sentient and the new, uh- [laughs] Dad noises Look at that shirt. I really like that shirt. You do? Yeah. It looks kinda like his. Dad noises. Yeah, yours is way better. Oh, yeah.
• 35:53
Escalate, correct? Dad Noises Escalate, yes. That is a, that is a good color. Um- Is that a, is that a technical shirt of some sort? It is. I thought so. It's got snaps. I love snaps.
• 36:02
I don't, I don't like buttons as much. It just looks like a quality shirt. It's, it snap, it's got snaps. It's warm. It's not that heavy. Yep. Um- Are the collars, like, down? Can you... No? No.
• 36:13
No, it's not that, it's not that kind of one. I like having the collars where they button down so they- Button, no, no, I'm not, I'm not that big a deal with them...
• 36:17
so when you're on your motorcycle they're not beating your face up like flappity, flappity, flappity, flappity. No, we're indoors. Those are 70s. When you're going 25 on your bicycle. Yeah. Flappity, flappity, flappity.
• 36:24
Who goes 25 on their bicycle besides Ron? Ron does. No, I u- prior to the brewery.
• 36:28
[laughs] Yeah, y- it used to be like if I, I used, I literally had a saying, "If your average is under 18, you can't fucking put it on Strava." I used to be that guy. Wow. Oh, wow. Yeah. That's pretty hardcore. Yeah.
• 36:38
No KOH. No KOH, man. [laughs] Look at my cajones. I'm going more than 18. And now, and now it's like, "I had a great ride on my steel bike to the brewery." At 18. At 14. Definitely not at 18. Not 18. [laughs] Not 18. No.
• 36:54
  22. [laughs] 14. Some, sometimes just rolling slow and taking in the scenery is a good thing. It, I love it.
• 37:01
Hey, let me show you something that I just picked up because I think it's cool as fuck, and it's something that you should have when you're doing bike rides. Instead of your stupid camera phone,
• 37:11
you should get a little camera that fits in your pocket, and a koozie is a perfect thing to put it in. You see? Oh, look at that. Yeah.
• 37:16
Uh, but it's, you know, this thing is, it's a big sensor, APSC sensor, which is large. And, uh, it just, it's a fixed focal length, like a 40 millimeter equivalent. Like, there's Tony right there.
• 37:28
So I gotta pull this out of the jersey and, like, deal with this? Eh, you could just have it on your- Quite the question... get a thing. Don't ask because if I say it- That's what I thought. I'm not buying it...
• 37:37
mucho, mucho dinero. If I s- Si... if I say it, Wendy will get mad. Oh. Oh. Wendy listens? Wendy. Plus- Oh, but it's taking great pictures. I saw the little thing. I, do you know that too? It's moving itself around.
• 37:47
Plus there's another one. So this one's a 40. There's another one that's a 28 that's almost exactly the same, so you should really have both. What does that number mean?
• 37:53
Uh, if you're a 35 millimeter shooter, which was the film thing from the old days, that would be the focal length of the lens. Mm-hmm. So it would give you- So you have two choices for this model...
• 38:03
uh, if you, yes, but each one is a separate camera. So 28 would be a fairly wide angle. 40 is closing in on basically what your, what your normal hu- not your peripheral, but your n- your basic human eyeball seeing thing
• 38:18
is, which, yeah, pretty much. [laughs] It's, uh- Normal eyeball seeing... it, it would be called a normal, they, it would be called a normal lens.
• 38:24
They, they consider 50 a normal, but 40's actually- Is this a camera podcast? Oh, it's got a screen too. Yeah. We c- we have creator corner. [laughs] So yes. It is. So what you're saying is that's not a cheap camera. No.
• 38:35
Okay. It costs less than the titanium frame, though. I can tell you that much. [laughs] Wow. [laughs] Okay, Greg. [laughs] Let's compare apples to oranges.
• 38:44
Well, we had some guys in the t- tap room earlier for the show we're having on Friday night. Uh, they're gonna video, video v- videographers, they're gonna do all that.
• 38:54
And they were talking about the cost of some of these video cameras can get up to, like, $98,000. What? That's getting- What?... silly. Yeah. I- Yeah. For- Oh, now it makes more sense.
• 39:03
Now it's, uh, yeah, dude with the shorts- So those things-... and the serape. [laughs] I think that was the guy we- Was that who we were talking to earlier tonight? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 39:10
That was the, yeah, Wave- Yeah, what was that dude wearing shorts... Wave Chappelle. I'm sure that was. Oh, is that Wave Chappelle? Oh, no. No. [laughs] That's not- Or one of the worlds of him.
• 39:17
[laughs] Wave Chappelle is a hip hop, uh, Milwaukee phenom who- Yes... plays it for the Milwaukee Bucks, is, uh, m- is Barack Obama's favorite Milwaukee rapper. Really? Yes. Barack Obama, baby. Yeah.
• 39:31
That's some cred right there. Yeah. I do like Wave Chappelle. And he's playing, uh, Anamorphic Beer on Friday night. That's what I was gonna- But this guy- Like tomorrow night? He was one...
• 39:39
No, it's, oh yes, tomorrow night. [laughs] He's one of the, he's one of the videographers. Ah, gotcha.
• 39:43
And, and we were like, they, they were doing some test shots and things, and we were talking about government grants and how they're hard to get, and he said if he could get one, he would buy this really expensive thing.
• 39:52
Like- Gotcha, gotcha. Does that- Not the $100,000 thing he bought? Like a Red? No, he doesn't have that. No. He wants to have that. He would buy a Red, obviously.
• 39:59
That is, I think that's kind of the thing that's going on there. Who would not buy one if they could? Like, those, the cameras we're using today are very capable, and they're $1,000 cameras- Mm-hmm... with, you know,
• 40:08
you can change lenses- Cameras are fucking nuts... and all the shit you need. Um, but if you're gonna do cinema, you might want a Red. [laughs] Yeah. If you, why not?
• 40:19
I mean, if you can have the best, would you drive a Porsche or would you drive a Fiat? I don't know. Oh, sorry. I would drive a, well, never mind. I, I own a Fiat. I'd much rather drive a Porsche. Fix it again, Tony.
• 40:30
I'd drive a Golf R. [laughs] I do- Yeah, you do. Wait a second. You do drive a Golf R... really, driving a Golf R- It's the best car I've ever had... you do drive a Golf R... this is not a bad car at all.
• 40:36
It's- If I'm gonna have to r- drive a car, I'm gonna drive that car. I think you should drive that car. Is it all-wheel drive? Yes. Yeah, of course. Is it 300 horsepower yet? Yeah. Yeah, it's a little more than that.
• 40:46
It's also manual transmission. Yeah. Yeah. That's the way it should be. Six speed probably. Yeah, of course. I wish it was seven. [laughs] Right? Like, you need a seventh gear because- Right...
• 40:53
they've tuned it for racing, but most of the time you just need that seventh gear. Or just make a crawler gear. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Yeah, I would love a crawler and then six speed's are fun.
• 41:01
I, I have an EOS. It's got the same six speed, but not nearly as much power. I remember at Shiver West 24, I didn't know you as well as I know you now, and I showed up.
• 41:11
I think you were surprised I showed up, and you were- Just very happy you showed up... you were t- you, you were, like, telling me about, like, uh, the Toyota with a three cylinder that- 300 horsepower. [laughs] Right.
• 41:20
The GR. Right. I'm like, "Oh, he's also a- GR... I found another bike guy that's also a car guy." Oh. [laughs] That thing is insane. We'll talk about cars after the show.
• 41:29
Three cylinders- I got a, I got a story for you about-... 300 horsepower, that's- Toyota-... that's just bizarre... Corolla GR... GR. Yeah, yeah. This should pique your interest. I have a story about a guy. A guy.
• 41:39
With a BMW X5 and an international scout. You lost me at X5, but okay. Yeah. I agree. And how they are going to be melded together. Dun, dun, dun. Sounds like barf. [laughs] Totally.
• 41:52
Uh, Matt X, he owns Urban Motorworks up on Capital Drive there, one of the best BMW mechanics out there, for sure. But yes, it will be cool. Sure. Yeah.
• 42:01
Anyway, hey, I think we spent enough time talking about lots of stuff. Thanks, Ron- Yeah, we have... very much for being a guest. Yeah, long run.
• 42:08
I gotta say, you should be on again because I'm sure we barely scratched the surface. Well, you invited me twice before with only, like, 10 minutes notice. Well, that's- So you give me more notice and then I'll show up.
• 42:15
So I'll, I'll see you next Tuesday. Probably, probably- 10 minutes before the show. You ready? [laughs] That probably, that probably- That was not me. [laughs] I invite Ron all the time. Come on over. Let's go.
• 42:23
You got nothing better to do. Let's go over there. It's right next door. You, you're a small business man. You got nothing else to do. Right. It's right next- Books, paperwork... it's right next door.
• 42:29
No, like, uh, like, make dinner. Right? Yeah. Literally next door. Literally. Right there. It's really cold today, though. It's gonna be a tough walk back. Oh, we're gonna be able to walk out the garage door, though.
• 42:39
We'll cut off, like, half the commute to get next door. Oh, yes. So instead of being 40 feet, it'll be 20? Yes. Right. Exactly. Yeah. I can handle it then. I did bring a jacket. Yeah. Yeah. Perfect. Forward thinking.
• 42:49
It's like- Forward thinking, I tell you... it's like negative six. I brought a jacket. I brought three jackets. That's how kind I'm [laughs] I mean, you're a man, I'm not. All right. We're getting out of here.
• 42:55
Thanks very much, everybody, for listening to us on this extended version of Full Spectrum Cycling. We'll get back to our regular lousy shows next week for show number 294. See you all somewhere this weekend.
