Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Donna de Mayo, our Australia correspondent, Donna, very cold over
- 0:03Speaker 1: your way.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Oh, you wouldn't believe it, but Australians just love talking
- 0:07Speaker 2: about the weather and we have had record load temperatures
- 0:10Speaker 2: across Southeast Australia. This icy blast has struck several states
- 0:15Speaker 2: in fact, and these freezing temperatures have pretty much caught
- 0:19Speaker 2: us unawares. In the capital, for instance, in Canberra minus
- 0:23Speaker 2: six point nine degrees, Inland, New South Wales below zero
- 0:26Speaker 2: across many areas and in a South Australia town the
- 0:30Speaker 2: coldest September in sixty two years. As I mentioned New
- 0:34Speaker 2: South Wales, you know areas minus eight, minus six in
- 0:38Speaker 2: Bathist minus four degrees. Victoria regional areas had minus four
- 0:43Speaker 2: point five and minus four in the Mali Region in
- 0:47Speaker 2: the heart of Victoria the coldest in twenty nine years.
- 0:51Speaker 2: So the way the Bureau says, oh, this system has
- 0:53Speaker 2: come almost from Antarctica and these temperatures about five to
- 0:58Speaker 2: eight degrees below average. Frankly, it's all taken. It's all
- 1:02Speaker 2: been a bit of a shock, to be honest. And
- 1:05Speaker 2: the weather forecast for today it's going to be a
- 1:07Speaker 2: frosty morning but thankfully by tomorrow it should start warming up.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I was going to say, is this really news, but
- 1:14Speaker 1: it's cold in Australia. Yes, there is news. Let's go
- 1:17Speaker 1: to trot warn tropical Queensland. There's a famous island that's
- 1:22Speaker 1: been sold.
- 1:23Speaker 2: So this Queensland island inspired scenes in Chronicles of Narnia,
- 1:27Speaker 2: a film that came out I think around twenty ten.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's just sold at auction. There were about two hundred
- 1:34Speaker 2: and eighty seven inquiries. Now sadly I wasn't one of them.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But this place is called Little Green Island. It's owned
- 1:41Speaker 2: by a film producer and actor called Douglas Gresham. Happens
- 1:44Speaker 2: to be the stepson of Narnia's author C. S. Lewis.
- 1:47Speaker 2: It's just south of the wit Sunday Islands on the
- 1:49Speaker 2: Grape Barrier Reef. A beautiful, beautiful part of the world.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Well Gresham happens to live in Malta, but he bought
- 1:55Speaker 2: this sixty three acre private island for two point four
- 1:57Speaker 2: to five million about fifteen years ago. And what's their well,
- 2:01Speaker 2: tropical forest, lagoon, pristine beaches, one house and a caretaker's
- 2:05Speaker 2: cottage and a pool. And the family said that they
- 2:09Speaker 2: relay to the agent that this island had inspired these
- 2:12Speaker 2: scenes in this film, The Chronicles of Narnia. The agent
- 2:15Speaker 2: said it was unspilt and secluded and it was quite beautiful.
- 2:19Speaker 2: But they're very very thankful. Locals are anyway, that the
- 2:23Speaker 2: buyer came from Macai in Queensland, so I didn't go
- 2:26Speaker 2: to an international buyer. As I mentioned, many many people
- 2:29Speaker 2: wanted to get their hands on this beautiful, beautiful part
- 2:31Speaker 2: of the world.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It sounds like it. Donna, thank you very much for that.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Don and our Australia correspondent.
