- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Chana, New York City in the rear view,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Mary now and we look forward to off season conditioning.
- 0:06Speaker 1: But for your money, what are the storylines between now
- 0:10Speaker 1: and spring practice.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Well, I mean, obviously the biggest one is offensive line additions.
- 0:16Speaker 2: They've got to get that figured out. But the growth
- 0:19Speaker 2: of this offense and their Dana Holgerson with Dylan Rayola,
- 0:23Speaker 2: with the receivers they've added to what they've got coming back,
- 0:27Speaker 2: I mean, that's a big piece. Then on defense, you
- 0:31Speaker 2: know they lost a lot in the portal where they've
- 0:34Speaker 2: added some key pieces from the portal too. So just
- 0:38Speaker 2: getting this win in the bowl game, finishing with a
- 0:41Speaker 2: winning season, it was the right step for year two,
- 0:45Speaker 2: and now you're bringing in more pieces with more growth
- 0:49Speaker 2: under Dana Holgerson than ideally John Bullern. That was the
- 0:52Speaker 2: biggest thing with the Bowl game, the number of young
- 0:55Speaker 2: players that saw reps. I mean, from Donovan Jones who
- 1:00Speaker 2: more or less started as a corner in this game,
- 1:02Speaker 2: Caleb Benning played key reps, Amari Sanders on the back
- 1:06Speaker 2: end of the defense. We saw a number of guys
- 1:09Speaker 2: get reps, Jordan Achoa, Connor Kaneely. You know, they're trying
- 1:14Speaker 2: to build some promising for depth of the future. Obviously,
- 1:18Speaker 2: Riley van Poppel, they've got to find new leadership to
- 1:22Speaker 2: build because you know, some of these guys that have
- 1:24Speaker 2: been here for five or six years are now gone,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and then they've got to rebuild some of those key spots, and.
- 1:30Speaker 1: They don't have a lot of time to do it
- 1:32Speaker 1: because you know, spring practice is really restricted. But special
- 1:35Speaker 1: teams are also a tremendously important component that has just
- 1:39Speaker 1: been lost on Nebraska football now over a couple of
- 1:42Speaker 1: coaching administrations. But that almost cost Nebraska the football game.
- 1:47Speaker 1: In fact, you could honestly say Bill O'Brien had kicked
- 1:50Speaker 1: a field goal on his second and last possession, that
- 1:53Speaker 1: would have made that last that last couple of minutes
- 1:58Speaker 1: of the game extremely nerve wracking because once again Nebraska
- 2:01Speaker 1: collapsed on special teams. What do you think is going
- 2:04Speaker 1: to happen and wins are going to happen.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Nebraska was very fortunate as you as you just
- 2:08Speaker 2: said there, Jim, and you know, Boston College and only
- 2:11Speaker 2: attempted four field goals on the year before the game,
- 2:15Speaker 2: so they were not a good kicking team themselves. But
- 2:19Speaker 2: Nebraska's added a new snapper Kevin Gaelic arguably the best
- 2:23Speaker 2: snapper in the portal. His grades in ninety on Pro
- 2:25Speaker 2: Football Focus. Their current snapper grades they're forty and twenty eight,
- 2:30Speaker 2: so they've upgraded that. They brought in Jack McCallister as
- 2:33Speaker 2: a punter. He actually has a higher grade on PFF
- 2:37Speaker 2: than Brian Bushini currently has. He's ranked as I believe
- 2:41Speaker 2: the fourth or fifth punter in the Big Ten. So
- 2:43Speaker 2: they've got a new punter and a new holder, so
- 2:46Speaker 2: that's been addressed. And then Andrew Marshall from Idaho is
- 2:50Speaker 2: a key kick and punt returner as well as a corner.
- 2:53Speaker 2: But Marshall ran a punt back and ran a kickback
- 2:56Speaker 2: for a touchdown this year at Idaho, who was a
- 2:59Speaker 2: top FCS program. So they're addressing some key needs there.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But you're right it in you know, a lot a
- 3:07Speaker 2: lot of questions and a lot of things maybe fixed there,
- 3:09Speaker 2: but snapper and holder and some of those things are
- 3:12Speaker 2: some of the biggest problems they had this year.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Now Bill bush is sitting in Lincoln doing radio.
- 3:18Speaker 1: This is the former Husker assistant. He's actually one of
- 3:20Speaker 1: the more respected special teams coaches in the country. Ed
- 3:24Speaker 1: Foley is a whipping boy on social media. He's the
- 3:28Speaker 1: special teams coordinator. Handicap Bill Bush getting back into college
- 3:32Speaker 1: football at Nebraska or well, Matt rule say, no, he's
- 3:35Speaker 1: part of a previous regime. We'll go get somebody else.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, there's nothing. I mean, he does a radio show
- 3:40Speaker 2: with Steve Simple, who works with me for me, and
- 3:44Speaker 2: there's nothing to it. I mean, this is just kind
- 3:45Speaker 2: of a media creation. I mean, look, he's a great guy,
- 3:50Speaker 2: great coach, but there's really nothing there other than you know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: maybe a few people have wrote that as a suggestion,
- 3:58Speaker 2: but Matt Roule doesn't know him at all, and I
- 4:01Speaker 2: just you know, if he did do something there more,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I think you would go to on the outside, somebody
- 4:08Speaker 2: that's currently still coaching.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Now. Talk about the portal, it's closed for the time being.
- 4:14Speaker 1: When does it open again and when will we see
- 4:16Speaker 1: more activity?
- 4:17Speaker 2: Well, technically it is open for five days after the
- 4:21Speaker 2: bowl game, so for Nebraska the current players, there's still
- 4:25Speaker 2: a few more days they can enter. You have five
- 4:27Speaker 2: days until after your final game ends. But as far
- 4:31Speaker 2: as visitors, January one is when you can start hosting
- 4:36Speaker 2: again portal visitors, So there's another eighteen days left until
- 4:41Speaker 2: classes begin, or you'll be able to have portal visitors
- 4:45Speaker 2: on your campus, and that will be something to watch
- 4:47Speaker 2: here as Nebraska has already hosted twenty two portal visitors
- 4:53Speaker 2: and you know they've they've landed eleven commits, so that
- 4:56Speaker 2: will be something to watch. Offensive line is clearly their
- 5:00Speaker 2: biggest need right now. I think there's some thoughts about
- 5:03Speaker 2: running back in some other positions, but the old line
- 5:06Speaker 2: would be their biggest need right now.
- 5:07Speaker 1: All right, big guy, take a break. Great work again
- 5:10Speaker 1: as always, and we'll keep Sean handy in case things break,
- 5:13Speaker 1: because yeah, five more days where Huskers can leave into
- 5:16Speaker 1: the portal because of the bowl game, but then we'll
- 5:19Speaker 1: have visitors right up till about the twentieth of January.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Very good, thanks man. Six fifty five is ready to
- 5:24Speaker 1: go on. I'm a ten kfab
