- 0:11Speaker 1: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Now this episode, we are back for another meeting of.
- 0:16Speaker 1: The Meltdown Horror Club. Now that's been a good portion
- 0:19Speaker 1: of our episodes lately, and that's not going to change.
- 0:22Speaker 2: In fact, we're in the process right now of planning
- 0:25Speaker 2: out our next several Horror Club episodes, and on top
- 0:29Speaker 2: of that, we've just been talking about what we're going
- 0:31Speaker 2: to be doing for Halloween this year. Because yes, it's
- 0:35Speaker 2: never too early to be thinking about Halloween. And of course,
- 0:37Speaker 2: these episodes are available exclusively to members of the Meltdown
- 0:41Speaker 2: Horror Club. And if that's not you already, well, it's
- 0:44Speaker 2: easy to take care of that. Just go to MovieMeltdown.com,
- 0:46Speaker 2: and right there at the top right-hand side of the page,
- 0:49Speaker 2: it says, Join the Meltdown Horror Club. Now, I know
- 0:51Speaker 2: this last year and a half or so has been
- 0:53Speaker 2: really hard for a lot of people, and that's kind
- 0:56Speaker 2: of why I haven't wanted to push the issue. I
- 0:58Speaker 2: know I've just been glad to keep my own head
- 1:00Speaker 2: above water, so I totally get it. But hopefully, as
- 1:03Speaker 2: the world begins to return to normal... or as normal
- 1:06Speaker 2: as this world ever was, maybe you're not counting every penny.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Because that's really all it takes to join the horror club.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I think Nora on a recent episode said it comes
- 1:16Speaker 2: out to about six cents.
- 1:17Speaker 1: A day to join in. Six cents!
- 1:20Speaker 2: Now, think how much more than that you blow on
- 1:23Speaker 2: random things every week.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And this isn't random. You're supporting your friends.
- 1:27Speaker 2: You're helping create this horror community and be part of it.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So if you aren't currently in the hole, please kick
- 1:33Speaker 1: in some of those.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Pennies and join the Meltdown Horror Club. Because once you join,
- 1:37Speaker 2: you'll get access to all the Horror Club episodes. And
- 1:40Speaker 2: then you can listen to us say awesome things like this.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I'm concerned about Nicolas Cage.
- 1:49Speaker 3: A studio hired a handful of writers. Four or five writers.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Write me a natural disaster epic. And then they picked Twister. Well,
- 1:58Speaker 3: now you had four finished scripts. One was Dante's Peak.
- 2:01Speaker 3: One was Volcano. And so they all went to other
- 2:04Speaker 3: studios to shop them around.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Here, rewrite this a little bit.
- 2:06Speaker 3: And so, I mean, that's exactly what they do is
- 2:09Speaker 3: that they hire a handful of writers. And then once
- 2:11Speaker 3: they pick the script they want, there's two or three
- 2:13Speaker 3: other scripts finished. So people are like, well, shit, I'm
- 2:16Speaker 3: going to go shop this over to Paramount.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I mean, how often do you have a movie that
- 2:22Speaker 2: far down the line where it's not all about the killer?
- 2:26Speaker 1: You know, because you watch that first movie.
- 2:28Speaker 2: We spend a lot of time with those kids and
- 2:31Speaker 2: we don't even see Mick for like half the movie.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Like it is a good amount of time getting to
- 2:35Speaker 2: know these kids. It's all about them setting up the, the,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know, waiting for the tension to show up when
- 2:41Speaker 2: he's there. So like it all kind of works on
- 2:43Speaker 2: that level. Whereas this one right out the gate, we
- 2:47Speaker 2: get nothing but him killing some cops.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I still enjoy Jack. I think that the movie
- 2:54Speaker 3: is perfect for what it was. It encompassed every character.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I mean, everything you loved about, you know, just fun
- 3:01Speaker 3: horror that wasn't necessarily a gore fest.
- 3:05Speaker 2: This looks dumb, but like maybe there's something else going
- 3:08Speaker 2: on here. I'm like, no, there's not.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Only something else. There's nothing going on here.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It is the most minimal amount of effort you could
- 3:16Speaker 2: put into a movie.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I feel like it would be, you know, like maybe
- 3:21Speaker 1: too much.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Well, I feel like it would be very, very contrived.
- 3:24Speaker 3: It would be like very, very much like, uh, well,
- 3:28Speaker 3: final destination again, where they go back to the mental
- 3:30Speaker 3: home and get the girl who's keeping herself safe, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 3: or they go back to the, you know, the guy
- 3:36Speaker 3: who once dealt with this menace, you know, and, and yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 3: I mean, it could work, but at the same time,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I kind of like knowing that he was so fucking
- 3:44Speaker 3: traumatized that you'll never hear from him again. He's under
- 3:48Speaker 3: special care. He's basically not good for anything anymore. And
- 3:53Speaker 3: you don't really realize it right off. But it's like,
- 3:55Speaker 3: last movie, we saw them hand the baton three times.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I was like, here's our main character. Oh, she's dead. Okay,
- 4:02Speaker 1: the other girl's gonna be our main... Oh, she's dead.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So we did this, and some dude out of the
- 4:08Speaker 2: blue becomes... At least last time, it was all three
- 4:11Speaker 2: of them, and it just kept switching.
- 4:12Speaker 1: But this guy was.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Out of nowhere became our main character by the.
- 4:16Speaker 1: End of the movie.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It makes it as chaotic for the people watching as
- 4:20Speaker 3: the movie is trying to be.
- 4:23Speaker 2: So, the one I did an episode on years ago
- 4:27Speaker 2: was Primeval. So, 2007, a news team is sent to
- 4:33Speaker 2: capture and bring home a legendary 25-foot crocodile. Our director
- 4:37Speaker 2: here did Rogue. 2007, an American journalist encounters a man-eating crocodile.
- 4:43Speaker 1: This is the same damn.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Movie, the same year.
- 4:48Speaker 3: But again, I don't feel like they did it in
- 4:49Speaker 3: a way that was just, like, exploitive. Like, I don't
- 4:53Speaker 3: think it was done to just be like, oh, look,
- 4:56Speaker 3: more gore, you know? It was like, the times it
- 4:59Speaker 3: did happen in this movie were brutal as hell.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And you were almost not expecting to see it because of, again,
- 5:06Speaker 3: of the way they filmed you don't see certain things.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And then they just show you certain things, and it's
- 5:11Speaker 3: almost even more jarring.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I know we put it on our list, but then
- 5:18Speaker 3: it was $ 20 when it got released.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, shit, dude.
- 5:22Speaker 3: It is not worth $ 20, I'll tell you that.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I spent like two bucks, and I was like, maybe
- 5:27Speaker 1: I should have picked something else, man.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Really?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:32Speaker 1: It was annoyingly bad.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Well, then that's where it also becomes very, like, Texas
- 5:39Speaker 3: Chainsaw 2, like, you know, House of a Thousand Corpses-ish,
- 5:44Speaker 3: you know, where he's got decor made by, like, bones and.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Which we all have, you know. No, totally, you know.
- 5:52Speaker 3: But I just, you know, like, with the Christmas lights
- 5:54Speaker 3: wrapped around, like, skeletons and shit, it felt very much
- 5:58Speaker 3: like your Twisted Murder Ride haunted house sort of, like,
- 6:03Speaker 3: catacombs of evil. Yeah.
- 6:06Speaker 2: If I'm calling him out for anything that's questionable, I'm
- 6:09Speaker 2: not saying impossible, but I do not remember in the
- 6:14Speaker 2: first movie at any point.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Does Mick get involved in like pop culture? Like he
- 6:22Speaker 1: is of his own.
- 6:24Speaker 2: He is out in the middle of nowhere and everything
- 6:26Speaker 2: is just him sort of taking his, his, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 2: doing his Mick thing. But he is like of his
- 6:32Speaker 2: own little world. He is not even part of our world.
- 6:36Speaker 2: In this movie, he makes maybe three different references.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Or other people. And he knows what they're talking about.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I'm just like, is he somebody who would be involved in,
- 6:47Speaker 2: And paying attention to pop culture?
- 6:51Speaker 3: You can throw on half of his films for pure
- 6:53Speaker 3: shits and giggles. And then he's also handed some... Now,
- 6:58Speaker 3: unlike Steven Seagal, he's handed some genuinely insane scripts.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels very, if not post-apocalyptic, at least in
- 7:11Speaker 2: this country, the Old West, where... As long as you're
- 7:14Speaker 2: away from the law, man, you can shoot somebody and
- 7:17Speaker 2: throw some dirt on them and move on with your day.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And, like, nobody cares. So it definitely has that, like.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Old West feel for America or nothing else post-apocalyptic, which
- 7:27Speaker 2: is back to the road warrior. Everything comes back to
- 7:29Speaker 2: the road warrior.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Speaking of directors that are old and still killing it.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 3: That was the one time you see him lose his
- 7:39Speaker 3: fucking cool.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And I mean.
- 7:41Speaker 3: That was like the one time in the movie, and
- 7:44Speaker 3: I feel like it was very specific, that they made
- 7:47Speaker 3: it to where he was not in control at that point.
- 7:49Speaker 3: He straight up was like, you're fucking caught in it.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Fucking fist up against the guy. He was furious.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I feel like this is just a great example of
- 8:01Speaker 3: independent Australian filmmaking that turned into something bigger and is
- 8:05Speaker 3: being still treated the way it was when it first
- 8:08Speaker 3: came out. Yeah. I don't think it's being bastardized yet.
- 8:14Speaker 3: And hopefully with the third and the series being done
- 8:18Speaker 3: still with the same production crew in the same area,
- 8:21Speaker 3: the same actor, and hopefully that's going to be taken
- 8:24Speaker 3: with the same care.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Again, I think having that original guy still running everything
- 8:29Speaker 2: makes such a huge difference.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I mean, it's not really even about the money.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I mean, yes, we do need money coming in to
- 8:36Speaker 2: pay for hosting fees and to keep the site going
- 8:39Speaker 2: and things like that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: But more than anything, we're really just trying to build
- 8:42Speaker 1: a community.
- 8:43Speaker 2: A group of friends that like movies and horror and
- 8:46Speaker 2: want to sit around and talk about them. I mean,
- 8:48Speaker 2: that's what this club, hell, that's what this show is
- 8:51Speaker 2: built on. And it's no fun to go through all
- 8:53Speaker 2: the trouble of putting this together and then nobody's out there.
- 8:57Speaker 2: So if you are out there, if you're listening to
- 8:59Speaker 2: this right now, go to MovieMeltdown.com and join the horror club.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Then you'll not only get to listen to every episode,
- 9:05Speaker 2: but you can help us choose what movies we're going
- 9:07Speaker 2: to watch in the future. So become a Melketeer and
- 9:09Speaker 2: help keep this Terror Train rolling.
