- 1:08Speaker 1: got two special guests today with me. Today I'm joined
- 1:12Speaker 1: by Randall Wilson. He's the chief operating officer over at
- 1:15Speaker 1: over at be checks.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Glad to be here. Yeah, man, well, thank you, Yeah,
- 1:19Speaker 2: it's cool.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And Jamie Francos, who she's a vice president of Global
- 1:23Speaker 1: Partnerships and Alliance at Fairly. I think you were just
- 1:26Speaker 1: in Europe or something?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Were you?
- 1:27Speaker 3: I was in Paris?
- 1:28Speaker 1: Oh, okay, Alsterdam, I saw something. But she's a Global
- 1:33Speaker 1: Partnerships and Alliance affairently.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Thanks for having me. We're having some fun, yeah for sure.
- 1:39Speaker 3: All right, let's get into it.
- 1:41Speaker 1: You guys know the drill. You know, we'd love to
- 1:44Speaker 1: get your stories. We'd love for you to submit them in.
- 1:47Speaker 1: We want you to do that. It could be a
- 1:48Speaker 1: good it could be a bad story about interview, story
- 1:51Speaker 1: about higher story at og flame ount, a first day
- 1:54Speaker 1: blow up, whatever it is. And then if you've got
- 1:58Speaker 1: a good higher story, well you know we love that
- 2:01Speaker 1: too because I love the redemption stories. So, uh, you
- 2:04Speaker 1: know you can send that in. Now, what we'll do
- 2:05Speaker 1: is at the end of the year, you know we're
- 2:09Speaker 1: gonna give We're gonna pick one story is the best
- 2:11Speaker 1: story of the year, and we're gonna award that person
- 2:14Speaker 1: ten thousand dollars for the best story of the year.
- 2:17Speaker 1: So go ahead, take your shot, send us a story
- 2:21Speaker 1: you can You can either send us a story of
- 2:23Speaker 1: this written, or you can ask to be do a
- 2:27Speaker 1: segment on the show where you'll meet with a producer.
- 2:29Speaker 1: They'll interview a segment with you where you can tell
- 2:31Speaker 1: the story yourself. Those are always super fun, and then
- 2:36Speaker 1: you know, we encourage you to kind of get in line.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I think we have eighty people in the pipeline trying
- 2:40Speaker 1: to trying to get on the show like that, so
- 2:43Speaker 1: and we're getting to them as fast as we can.
- 2:44Speaker 1: So but yeah, you know, sign up for it all right?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Or were we must be one of the fortunate few
- 2:50Speaker 2: that got that in front of the line of eighty
- 2:53Speaker 2: other people. So, oh no, there's not.
- 2:57Speaker 1: They're not hosts, so we don't.
- 2:59Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:00Speaker 1: What we found is so much easier to coordinate these
- 3:03Speaker 1: segments than to try to get people to time everything perfectly.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And then you know what, uh, cross talking reaction stuff
- 3:12Speaker 1: doesn't work as well when it's uh there's somebody on
- 3:16Speaker 1: you know, over the phone or you know, on zoom
- 3:19Speaker 1: call or whatever. Yeah, it's not it's hard for them
- 3:22Speaker 1: to get.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Who's the ultimate judge of the story, who gets to
- 3:25Speaker 3: pick the best I.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Think the team will pick Okay, yeah, for sure. So
- 3:30Speaker 1: I have one particularly I like so far right. It's
- 3:34Speaker 1: the the it's a cat story. So it's it's well,
- 3:42Speaker 1: a guy that gets on Zoom calls and team calls
- 3:45Speaker 1: and he's laying in bed shirtless with his cat and
- 3:48Speaker 1: he's on the company call. It's a great story and
- 3:52Speaker 1: it just resonated with me, I think because we we
- 3:57Speaker 1: we had an occurrence of that.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah what they didn't in bed shirtless?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yes, wow, smile.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll try to top this today.
- 4:09Speaker 1: We watched this, you know when you came out of uh,
- 4:12Speaker 1: when you came when COVID first started and we started
- 4:15Speaker 1: moving everybody around and got them home. I think we
- 4:18Speaker 1: sent everybody home on March seventeenth or March nineteenth, and uh,
- 4:23Speaker 1: I just I just I just remember, you know that
- 4:27Speaker 1: everybody was so like everything was you know, dressed, they
- 4:30Speaker 1: still wore their gear. Yeah, they were dressed up, hair done,
- 4:34Speaker 1: makeup on. You know, everybody looked sharp that first six
- 4:37Speaker 1: first for six months, and.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Then it all went downhill.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Started so that it was like, well the.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Hair no longer no, or they just go off camera.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, let's they turned their camera in their their
- 4:49Speaker 2: bare chest and laying in the bed.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and so it goes all the way to the end,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and I don't know, I think it's funny. And you know,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you just see this slow to claw line of like, okay, well,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you know they don't dress up anymore. Now they don't.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They don't really wash their hair or do their hair anymore,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and you know, the makeup is long gone. And so
- 5:10Speaker 1: the end result is we're turning the camera off. Right,
- 5:13Speaker 1: So now you're you're doing an event with no one's
- 5:16Speaker 1: onto it. And I'm like, as a leader, I'm trying
- 5:18Speaker 1: to like, how do you How am I going to
- 5:19Speaker 1: build and shape a culture of people who won't put
- 5:22Speaker 1: their face? You know, you don't even know what people
- 5:24Speaker 1: look if we hire somebody, don't even know what they
- 5:26Speaker 1: look like, because if they come on and see that
- 5:28Speaker 1: everyone turning the camera off, they're just like right back off.
- 5:31Speaker 2: There's your opportunities to make some bad hires right there. Yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 2: On camera only.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so we make I think we have a rule,
- 5:38Speaker 1: don't we do? Always have your Yeah, camera's got to
- 5:43Speaker 1: be on.
- 5:43Speaker 3: I'm a camera on girl too, Yeah, so you have
- 5:45Speaker 3: to you have to see them.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't even own client calls or prospect calls
- 5:50Speaker 2: will come on with cameras, and sometimes the other hand
- 5:53Speaker 2: feels a little obligated to turn their cameras on a point.
- 5:56Speaker 2: You're like, everybody there is just turn their camera on camera.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It's kind of a way to make sure they're paying attention. Right,
- 6:03Speaker 1: just like dozed off and you.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Feel like you're talking to a wall, if not just
- 6:07Speaker 3: talking to the space.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, So today is pretty cool because you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: Jamie does is heavy into social media screening and her
- 6:18Speaker 1: company is heavy in the social media screening. It got
- 6:20Speaker 1: great technology and so it does that and she's just
- 6:26Speaker 1: you've been in it for for a while now, for yeah,
- 6:29Speaker 1: since the beginning, you know of of really when this
- 6:33Speaker 1: became a thing, I think I remember when it first
- 6:37Speaker 1: started that, you know, it was there was just a
- 6:41Speaker 1: lot of resistance in the industry around like is this
- 6:45Speaker 1: is this legal? And every lawyer from every c for
- 6:50Speaker 1: can't be doing that stuff. No, no, no, no, no.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Our lawyer had a fit. Yeah he did it. Do
- 6:55Speaker 2: not put any scoring on there, do not let them
- 6:57Speaker 2: do this.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Best you do you just not do this. Just don't
- 6:59Speaker 1: do this, you know, And we're.
- 7:01Speaker 2: We're going to review every one of these before they
- 7:03Speaker 2: let them send them out to the clients, Like, well,
- 7:05Speaker 2: it's a social media screen, so dude.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Is public information public posts? They just laid it up there.
- 7:12Speaker 1: It's like I accident, I went to a speech and
- 7:14Speaker 1: heard them talk, and I heard them talk.
- 7:16Speaker 3: You know, that's what else are we going to see
- 7:17Speaker 3: people without their shirts on? I mean, come on, that's true.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Anyway, So you've been you've been in ad a long time,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and so today we're going to dedicate the show to
- 7:30Speaker 1: nothing but social media blow up stories. And so we've
- 7:33Speaker 1: got you know, there's a couple of famous ones where
- 7:36Speaker 1: we're going to talk about that. I actually did a
- 7:38Speaker 1: post about one of these, uh the other day where
- 7:41Speaker 1: I talked about it, but we'll talk about it here
- 7:44Speaker 1: on this on this show. And these these should be uh,
- 7:46Speaker 1: these should be interesting. And so before we dive back
- 7:49Speaker 1: into the chaos on the bad Hire, this episode is
- 7:52Speaker 1: brought to you by b Checks. Hiring shouldn't feel like
- 7:55Speaker 1: rolling the dice. Background checks should come with great tech,
- 7:58Speaker 1: seamless integration and customer service that delivers. That's b checks,
- 8:03Speaker 1: lightning fast results, unmatched accuracy, built in fraud prevention, we

- 8:17Speaker 1: background checks run smooth, fast and back by top level service.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Protect your team, protect your reputation, protect your sanity. Go
- 8:26Speaker 1: to bchecks dot io. That's bc h ex dot io.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Why don't I get started at twenty thirteen? All right,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I guess social media was rolling in twenty thirteen. Yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and it's prom Yeah. So in twenty thirteen, the head
- 8:51Speaker 1: of PR for one of the biggest media companies in
- 8:55Speaker 1: the world boarded a flight with one hundred and seventy
- 9:00Speaker 1: Twitter followers. That's all. She had, one hundred and seventy
- 9:02Speaker 1: Twitter follows, which is kind of crazy because she's the
- 9:06Speaker 1: head of PR at a bare media firm. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 9:13Speaker 1: She landed eleven hours later and she was fired. So
- 9:18Speaker 1: she had already been terminated by the time she landed.
- 9:21Speaker 1: So her name was Justin Soako and she's the senior
- 9:24Speaker 1: director of corporate Communications at a company called IAC and
- 9:29Speaker 1: that's the company behind match dot com and Vimeo and
- 9:34Speaker 1: The Daily Beast. So her entire job, her entire job
- 9:38Speaker 1: was like managing the company's reputation, all right, and so
- 9:42Speaker 1: before she posted, before she boarded, she posted a tweet.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It was offensive, it was racist, and it begins and
- 9:52Speaker 1: it had been sitting in her public feed like for years,
- 9:56Speaker 1: so I guess she reposted it. Anyway, she got on
- 10:02Speaker 1: on an eleven hour flight and there was at the
- 10:06Speaker 1: time no internet access, so you know, it used to
- 10:08Speaker 1: be when you flew there was no Wi Fi, so
- 10:11Speaker 1: you were just kind of down, you know, unless you
- 10:14Speaker 1: use that little phone in the back of the seat.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So you know, she's flying, uh, an eleven hour flight,
- 10:20Speaker 1: no internet access, and had absolutely no idea what was
- 10:24Speaker 1: happening while she was in the air. Right, So within
- 10:28Speaker 1: two hours of her making that post, her tweet was
- 10:32Speaker 1: the number one trending topic on Twitter worldwide. It just
- 10:39Speaker 1: gets me.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Can you imagine, and she's just sitting saying, you know.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Like firing something off while he's sitting in the tarm
- 10:45Speaker 1: you know, you're waiting.
- 10:48Speaker 2: She must have had a famous follower at least one
- 10:51Speaker 2: it retweeted or just made it comments. Yeah, frustrats. I mean,
- 10:56Speaker 2: she's had to.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Know.
- 10:59Speaker 2: And so.
- 11:01Speaker 1: If she becomes a number one trending topic, celebrities were
- 11:05Speaker 1: celebrities were piling on and a hashtag called has justin
- 11:12Speaker 1: Justine landed yet? Hashtag has Justine landed yet?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Started? In her post, she does. She tell them she
- 11:19Speaker 2: was getting ready to get on a plane and thought
- 11:22Speaker 2: she would reshare an old tweet.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know, but she had I
- 11:27Speaker 1: read hours, I read the bas I read the I
- 11:30Speaker 1: actually read the post a couple of weeks ago, but
- 11:32Speaker 1: I can't remember the details other than I know, I
- 11:34Speaker 1: know it was not a good one.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And so so you're not going to share what she posted?
- 11:39Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want to say it because I
- 11:42Speaker 1: wasn't got exactly right. He doesn't want to get her
- 11:46Speaker 1: hashtag has justin has Justine landed yet? Is trending globally
- 11:51Speaker 1: and I A c had an issue had to issue
- 11:54Speaker 1: a crisis statement. So the company she hasn't even started
- 11:58Speaker 1: work for yet they've hired her, but she I haven't
- 12:00Speaker 1: showed up for her first day, it was trend had
- 12:05Speaker 1: to issue a crisis statement explaining that their own head
- 12:09Speaker 1: of communication was unreachable on an airplane. Someone physically went
- 12:13Speaker 1: to the Cape Town Airport just to document the moment
- 12:16Speaker 1: she landed. This is crazy. She was fired before the
- 12:21Speaker 1: day was over i AC condemned the tweet publicly, repeatedly
- 12:25Speaker 1: in front of the entire Internet. The head of communications
- 12:28Speaker 1: became their biggest communications crisis. And the thing that still,
- 12:33Speaker 1: you know, gets me is this This was all in
- 12:37Speaker 1: her public feed, not to her friends, not.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Hidden, not private.
- 12:43Speaker 1: It's that's a crazy thing about these social social media screen.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Pick this up if it was public, yep, yeah, are
- 12:49Speaker 2: you good?
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yeah? So for years, a basic social media screen before
- 12:55Speaker 1: she was ever hired would have found out this in minutes.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Right, So think about all the social media posts she
- 13:01Speaker 2: had had doing as a previous as a as a
- 13:05Speaker 2: young college student getting ready to start your career and
- 13:11Speaker 2: not realizing that a post from three or four years
- 13:14Speaker 2: ago is that was a is going to make a
- 13:17Speaker 2: big difference in your in your next ten to fifteen
- 13:19Speaker 2: years and what your dream job is.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Fifty of HR leaders and hiring managers admit to not
- 13:27Speaker 1: hiring someone based on something they saw in their Yah,
- 13:30Speaker 1: we social media. We have clients think about that.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we have clients that do social media screening, but
- 13:35Speaker 2: a lot of them think that they're detectives as well,
- 13:38Speaker 2: and they'll go out and start looking on different popular
- 13:42Speaker 2: social media websites, but nothing that a deep dive on
- 13:46Speaker 2: a social media screen will of course too, because you
- 13:49Speaker 2: just don't know.
- 13:50Speaker 3: That's when you do it that way too. That's hard
- 13:52Speaker 3: not to have your own bias and what they't have to,
- 13:54Speaker 3: so you just have to take that off the table.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's one of the cool things about
- 13:58Speaker 1: the social media screens is it's just the company sets policies,
- 14:02Speaker 1: says this type, let's bring it in and you you
- 14:06Speaker 1: don't have a rogue person has certain political beliefs, look
- 14:12Speaker 1: at something and go, oh, I don't like that person. Yeah,
- 14:15Speaker 1: they don't believe the same thing I do, so out
- 14:17Speaker 1: and so that runs prolific through uh, you know, an
- 14:22Speaker 1: entire for.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Long the indo our organization is thinking like you do, yeah,
- 14:26Speaker 2: which is not always good.
- 14:27Speaker 1: No, that's right. So so you know, have you have
- 14:35Speaker 1: you I guess I'm blown away by how I don't
- 14:41Speaker 1: remember back in twenty thirteen stuff happening that is certainly
- 14:45Speaker 1: happens today. Like I think there are people wrecked and
- 14:50Speaker 1: ruined off social media than way more than their.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Well, political climate and everything else is so much more
- 14:57Speaker 2: you know adversary today that people it used to be. Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 2: what it used to be. So twenty thirteen is that
- 15:03Speaker 2: not about the time that that my Space was dying
- 15:06Speaker 2: and Facebook was taking off and sort of handing over
- 15:10Speaker 2: the reins, and Twitter probably was still in its infinite stages.
- 15:16Speaker 3: And you know, I mean, the reality is this. People
- 15:19Speaker 3: are more educated today on what to post and what
- 15:21Speaker 3: not to post. But back then, you didn't know. You
- 15:24Speaker 3: didn't think of, oh, I'm going to be online for
- 15:26Speaker 3: the rest of my life. You don't think like that.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Yeah, there's there's so many instances today where people like
- 15:36Speaker 1: it's brought up when they're twenty eight years old something
- 15:39Speaker 1: they put on social media when they were sixteen, and
- 15:42Speaker 1: I'm like, fake, God, I did live back then because
- 15:47Speaker 1: I was so wild and would have.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I mean, I'm glad I didn't have social media in
- 15:51Speaker 3: college or high school. I'm glad I didn't have a
- 15:53Speaker 3: cell phoney, cell phone cameras your.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Pocket right so far deep in their feet, they haven't
- 15:59Speaker 1: been back that deep in years. You're almost better off
- 16:02Speaker 1: somebody to have a little success. You have a little
- 16:05Speaker 1: you make one person mad at work, you know, you
- 16:08Speaker 1: create one enemy in your life, and so they go
- 16:13Speaker 1: down their deep dive, you know, and they're like they're
- 16:15Speaker 1: gonna go and then they're going to expose something, and
- 16:17Speaker 1: then they dig deeper and deeper and morse, people start
- 16:20Speaker 1: digging your just like you know.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Wow, even if you're not even if you're not public,
- 16:26Speaker 2: and you've befriended someone at work in your inner circle
- 16:31Speaker 2: who now has a vendetta against you, Yeah, who's going
- 16:35Speaker 2: to take your tweet? Take us a picture of it,
- 16:39Speaker 2: share it. You know, I can't believe Ken said this
- 16:43Speaker 2: five years ago. Look what he said. But it's not public.
- 16:46Speaker 2: But now they've exposed you. Yeah, because you thought they
- 16:49Speaker 2: were a friend.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Yeah. So oh, I mean even today when we do
- 16:53Speaker 1: these and I do social media clips, I'm like, I've
- 16:57Speaker 1: always got this kind of backfilter on, like should I
- 17:00Speaker 1: post that? Should? There's been a couple of times where
- 17:03Speaker 1: we posted something and there was one time where we
- 17:09Speaker 1: talked about a bad hire who went to work early
- 17:11Speaker 1: on his first day at work and cut his thumb
- 17:13Speaker 1: off before the before his boss even got there. Wow.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And so you know, you know, you can find yourself
- 17:20Speaker 1: making a lot of fun of that, and it is
- 17:22Speaker 1: kind of comical, but it's tragic to it is tragic, right,
- 17:26Speaker 1: And it like the guy found in my following the
- 17:28Speaker 1: blood down the road. The guy bicycled like ten miles
- 17:31Speaker 1: to the to the hospital, and so you know, in
- 17:35Speaker 1: the spirit of just kind of having fun, you know,
- 17:37Speaker 1: is you just go, oh, yeah, it's fun, you know,
- 17:39Speaker 1: you do you believe that you're walking around And when
- 17:42Speaker 1: I but when I watched it, when we posted it,
- 17:45Speaker 1: I was like, oh, that doesn't it just doesn't horrific.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It doesn't feel good, you know, It's like I don't
- 17:51Speaker 1: feel good.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Soels like that's the same story that was intended.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah, right, it just.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Didn't come across. You know. The way we responded was
- 17:57Speaker 1: in good, good fun. So I thought about, like, if
- 18:01Speaker 1: this guy watched that, he would he would see us
- 18:03Speaker 1: anybody think we're making fun of him.
- 18:05Speaker 2: So this story is taking twenty thirteen, right, So for
- 18:08Speaker 2: thirteen years, this individual has had to live with this nightmare,
- 18:13Speaker 2: this still following her. Yes, we're still a story to
- 18:15Speaker 2: talking about it publicly today thirteen years later.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Because she was in the news and this is a
- 18:21Speaker 1: big story.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So I felt totally good with Well to one more
- 18:25Speaker 2: question where she at today?
- 18:27Speaker 1: I don't know, and look it up. It's a good question.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I'd be curious to.
- 18:31Speaker 1: kJ you want to look up, you want to look
- 18:33Speaker 1: that up.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Let us know, baby, baby, it's a better bad hire
- 18:39Speaker 3: story now right, she's improved your skills.
- 18:43Speaker 1: All right, Jamie, what do you got? All right? Of course?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, all right, here's mine. In March twenty twenty one,
- 18:50Speaker 3: the publisher behind Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker
- 18:54Speaker 3: announced they'd hired Alexi mccannon as editor in chief of
- 18:57Speaker 3: teen Vague. She was twenty seven award winning journalist, a
- 19:01Speaker 3: rising star, and by every measure, the perfect hire. She
- 19:06Speaker 3: had also posted racist tweets back in twenty eleven, so
- 19:09Speaker 3: we're back in that era, right, ten years earlier. She
- 19:12Speaker 3: disclosed them during the interview. The publisher's own h her
- 19:15Speaker 3: department confirmed this publicly. They knew, and they moved forward anyway.
- 19:19Speaker 3: The announcement went out March fifth. Screenshots she just mentioned,
- 19:23Speaker 3: screenshots screenshots of her old tweets went viral almost immediately.
- 19:28Speaker 1: She had an enemy. Somebody didn't get the job.
- 19:29Speaker 3: That friend she made men. Twenty members of her own staff,
- 19:33Speaker 3: people she hadn't even met yet, publicly condemned the hire.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Alta Beauty paused a seven figure add by Bertsbes suspended
- 19:40Speaker 3: their campaign Oh my God on March eighteen, thirteen days
- 19:44Speaker 3: after the announcement. Alexi resigned before she started, before she
- 19:48Speaker 3: published a single article, before she even sat in the
- 19:51Speaker 3: editor's chair. And this is what gets me the messed.
- 19:54Speaker 3: The publisher knew about the post Alexi told them about,
- 19:58Speaker 3: but what they didn't find were the homophobic slurs, the
- 20:01Speaker 3: halloween photo, the full pattern. She disclosed what she chose
- 20:05Speaker 3: to disclose, and they took her ward for it. So
- 20:08Speaker 3: knowing about the problem and understanding the full scope of
- 20:11Speaker 3: the problem are two very different things.
- 20:14Speaker 1: That's for real.
- 20:15Speaker 3: What do we think of that one?
- 20:16Speaker 1: I don't know. I think it's I think it's interesting.
- 20:18Speaker 1: It's kind of like it's kind of like when someone
- 20:20Speaker 1: goes to work and they go, hey, you know, they
- 20:22Speaker 1: always anything in your background?
- 20:25Speaker 3: No, just But it's also like when you're on the
- 20:28Speaker 3: spot like that, you sometimes are like, I don't know,
- 20:30Speaker 3: Like I think I'm okay. Then you're like, I don't
- 20:33Speaker 3: I don't.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Know what if they're going to find it or not,
- 20:36Speaker 1: Like is it too old they won't find it? Or
- 20:39Speaker 1: you know, do you remember the do you remember the
- 20:41Speaker 1: flying Biscuit story? It's a restaurant called the Flying bisk
- 20:45Speaker 1: Climb Biscuit where the manager, the two owners, yeah, hire
- 20:52Speaker 1: some guy to come in and do dishes and do
- 20:54Speaker 1: that kind of back of the house stuff. And you
- 20:57Speaker 1: know they ask him, you you ever you know you're
- 21:00Speaker 1: been arrested. Oh yeah, you know. I it's just a
- 21:02Speaker 1: little minor thing on some checks, is you know.
- 21:06Speaker 2: So he didn't lie. He just did tell the whole trick.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Yeah he did.
- 21:09Speaker 1: That's right. He had, he disclosed. He did have running
- 21:12Speaker 1: with the law. It's just his running was arm robbery
- 21:16Speaker 1: and forgot fraudulent chack, you know, the same things right
- 21:19Speaker 1: in a bad jack. I mean you made it out
- 21:20Speaker 1: like yeah, yeah, it's a bad jack, you know. You know, man,
- 21:24Speaker 1: I just you know, I was in between jobs and
- 21:27Speaker 1: so that's the reason I really need this job. So anyway,
- 21:31Speaker 1: they come to him and they find on like his
- 21:34Speaker 1: seventh day of work. Then nine month eight month old
- 21:38Speaker 1: pregnant managers in there. When she opens the safe, he
- 21:42Speaker 1: walks up behind her and stabs her fifteen twenty times,
- 21:45Speaker 1: jacks her body outside, and throws her in the dumpster
- 21:48Speaker 1: behind the dumpster, right, And it's exactly like that it's
- 21:55Speaker 1: like asking and then you know they go, oh yeah,
- 21:58Speaker 1: you know, and you don't actually so he admitted to something.
- 22:01Speaker 1: You're like, oh, well okay, yeah, no, you deserve a
- 22:04Speaker 1: second chance. And then you don't find out that wasn't
- 22:07Speaker 1: the whole story. And that's probably It's kind of like
- 22:09Speaker 1: this as she went in there and said, eh, and
- 22:12Speaker 1: the fact that one did it die from it. But
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know, bees, birds, bees, you know, others tould their accounts.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I mean, you got twenty people revolting. You've absolutely disrupted
- 22:25Speaker 1: your culture because they're going to find out that you
- 22:27Speaker 1: knew or you were told, and that you did it anyway.
- 22:31Speaker 1: You know, the repercussions of that. Social media, their social
- 22:33Speaker 1: media posts are crazy and people should they should do
- 22:36Speaker 1: these social.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Media chair again their public posts, yeah, public, Yeah, this.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Isn't behind a this is behind their firewall of their friends.
- 22:44Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of crazy. What do you got?
- 22:49Speaker 2: Do you see a lot Do you see a lot
- 22:52Speaker 2: of pr organizations running social media screens these days?
- 22:55Speaker 3: And social media influencers.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Social media in today's world.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Right, everybody's used to back in the day print ads
- 23:01Speaker 3: and different ways to do marketing and advertising, but lots
- 23:04Speaker 3: of companies now hire influencers to promote their brand. Yeah right,
- 23:08Speaker 3: we better do a social media check on that influencer,
- 23:10Speaker 3: because god forbid, they're promoting your brand, but maybe on
- 23:13Speaker 3: their social media they're promoting your competitor. Not a good thing.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yeah right, okay, the contractors, So so you're still your
- 23:23Speaker 2: brand face.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So you can you imagine what happens when one of
- 23:26Speaker 1: them hits like, oh, they're doing great, like they're killing it.
- 23:29Speaker 1: They're like getting lots of clicks and views for you.
- 23:32Speaker 1: So it's like, oh no.
- 23:33Speaker 2: So you I find out they're on that steam list. Yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 2: and then and then you're like, you got the opposite direction.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Oh my god, I think of you and money person.
- 23:41Speaker 3: They had a contestant that they found out was doing
- 23:44Speaker 3: the racial social media post got pulled right away.
- 23:48Speaker 1: We just did. We just did a social media reaction
- 23:52Speaker 1: videos last week, and it was all about the the
- 23:58Speaker 1: girl on the Bachelor, the best thurette who you know.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I think you're aware of the story, but it is.
- 24:04Speaker 1: You know, they found out she had was serious domestic violence.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Oh yeah, had song battery.
- 24:11Speaker 1: She already she'd already been arrested, she'd already had it
- 24:13Speaker 1: accused every one time, and then you know she's taking
- 24:16Speaker 1: her current boyfriend. She's you know, and.
- 24:18Speaker 2: She's so they already had that show fully filmed right
- 24:22Speaker 2: three court.
- 24:22Speaker 1: They were like three quarters the way through. They've probably
- 24:24Speaker 1: had seventy million in it. I read they probably had
- 24:27Speaker 1: fifty to seventy million of capital expenditure, and I think
- 24:31Speaker 1: they've so he's a screen with all the people that
- 24:33Speaker 1: were on their show. People say that they're challenge to
- 24:36Speaker 1: go on there because it's a chance to be famous,
- 24:38Speaker 1: and you know, everyone's left holding the bag. Nobody's going
- 24:41Speaker 1: to get any residuals. You know, you got you got
- 24:44Speaker 1: Amy or somebody whoever it was, is expecting uh, twelve
- 24:49Speaker 1: or fourteen episodes, whatever that ever is. They're not getting
- 24:53Speaker 1: their product. You know, they're going to sue for what
- 24:55Speaker 1: they would have made in the advertising. It's a mess.
- 24:58Speaker 3: And that's why I always say people, yeah, but everybody
- 25:03Speaker 3: goes into reactive mode. It just would have been proactive
- 25:06Speaker 3: from the beginning.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Yeah, so I could see, you know, same thing up
- 25:10Speaker 1: but probably even often.
- 25:12Speaker 2: And let me tell you that I remember, and this
- 25:15Speaker 2: is going to date me a little bit, but I
- 25:17Speaker 2: remember the first year that the Bachelor came out when
- 25:20Speaker 2: they first created The Bachelor, and they went with the
- 25:24Speaker 2: first season.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I think I was I think I was a baby
- 25:26Speaker 1: of that day.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Well probably on the second season. They had such a
- 25:32Speaker 2: hard time staffing it during the first season that they
- 25:36Speaker 2: ran all these different sexually transmitted disease profiles on all
- 25:40Speaker 2: these contestants that were trying to get on the show.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And one of the producers called and said, Hey, here's
- 25:46Speaker 2: three candidates that we need you to overlook their test
- 25:50Speaker 2: results on and because we really need these three out
- 25:54Speaker 2: of the you know, these three girls out of twenty
- 25:57Speaker 2: to get on the show because it helped trading, it
- 26:00Speaker 2: helps ratings, and so the producer was pressuring us to
- 26:05Speaker 2: overlook these results and we went in budget budge, and
- 26:09Speaker 2: so they went to another provider. Oh, you lost the
- 26:13Speaker 2: lost because we wouldn't. We wouldn't.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't realize you were the vendor.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yes, we were the vendor that was handling all the.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Vendor of the Bachelorette.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Uh, not of background checks, but of their their health assessments,
- 26:27Speaker 2: some health assessments, believe it or not. So they would
- 26:30Speaker 2: run I mean they would they would run these folks
- 26:32Speaker 2: through your analysis, blood samples, run all these different profiles
- 26:37Speaker 2: on it. We have our doctors.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You understand how deep they're looking. There's no way they
- 26:41Speaker 1: didn't know the bat. They clearly knew that. Yeah, they
- 26:44Speaker 1: just they made as always that she that was going
- 26:49Speaker 1: to be more powerful A right, So what aana? What
- 26:51Speaker 1: do you got?
- 26:52Speaker 2: All right? So out Back Steakhouse? So with February, yeah,
- 26:59Speaker 2: out about This is not a commercial for Outback Steakhouse,
- 27:01Speaker 2: by the way. Yep, they do bloomin onion yea. So
- 27:06Speaker 2: in February of twenty eighteen, a server is working at
- 27:10Speaker 2: Outback Steakhouse in Florida. It's a Wednesday morning and a
- 27:14Speaker 2: local mega church calls in a massive takeout order. Twenty
- 27:18Speaker 2: five steaks, twenty five chicken, twenty five orders of potatoes,
- 27:22Speaker 2: and the bill comes out to seven hundred and thirty
- 27:24Speaker 2: five dollars. The server spends most of her shift putting
- 27:28Speaker 2: this order together. When the volunteer from the church shows
- 27:32Speaker 2: up to grab the food, she loads it all in
- 27:35Speaker 2: the car. No tip here comes the social media post.
- 27:39Speaker 2: So she goes home that night and posts about it
- 27:42Speaker 2: on Facebook. Mine She's upset, venning that she only made
- 27:46Speaker 2: eighteen dollars in tips the entire day. Wow, eighteen dollars
- 27:50Speaker 2: I feel bad for Okay, yeah, this's twenty eighteen eighteen bucks.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Is that's a hard day's labor for nineteen bucks. So
- 27:57Speaker 2: she made eighteen dollars in tips for the entire day
- 28:00Speaker 2: because that one order had taken her most of her
- 28:02Speaker 2: shift to get prepared and out the door. A friend
- 28:06Speaker 2: of hers sees the post. Okay, here's the friend steps
- 28:10Speaker 2: in and calls the church directly to complain. So no
- 28:15Speaker 2: one at the church seeing the posts. A friend helped
- 28:18Speaker 2: promote the post and.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Then and then announces I saw this on social media
- 28:22Speaker 4: all this and you were to be ashamed. Your face
- 28:25Speaker 4: responds by saying they're volunteer simply hadn't known that it
- 28:29Speaker 4: was customary to tip on large takeout orders, and that
- 28:33Speaker 4: they tried to contact the restaurant to get a tip
- 28:35Speaker 4: to the server after the fact.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Okay, so they were trying to do right. They were
- 28:40Speaker 2: trying to do right. They were going to tip after
- 28:42Speaker 2: the fact, but apparently the poste social media post went
- 28:47Speaker 2: out to.
- 28:47Speaker 1: See, you know, someone who's never ordered seven hundred and
- 28:51Speaker 1: fifty dollars worth of food, you know.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Think or there aren't the ones that paid the bills
- 28:55Speaker 3: the like, maybe it was already taken care of.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Pick Yeah, it's a pick up. I'm just the runner
- 28:58Speaker 1: pick up his stuff, you.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Know, eighteen percent twenty percent on a seven hundred and
- 29:02Speaker 2: thirty five dollars order. You know, I'm just a volunteer.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I can't tip you a hundred bucks. That's not one
- 29:07Speaker 2: hundred dollars. But anyway, So she shows up for work
- 29:10Speaker 2: the next day and her manager tells her she's fired
- 29:13Speaker 2: for posting that by a customer on social media because
- 29:17Speaker 2: it's against company policy. Oh and the church got a
- 29:20Speaker 2: full seven hundred and thirty five dollars refund for that order.
- 29:24Speaker 2: So so to recap, she worked most of her shift
- 29:26Speaker 2: preparing a seven hundred and thirty five dollars order, made
- 29:30Speaker 2: eighteen dollars for the entire day, and got fired for
- 29:33Speaker 2: talking about it, and the church got their money back.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:36Speaker 2: So so really she's the big loser of the day
- 29:40Speaker 2: because social media.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Because because her friend caught older.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Joan be honest, Yeah, both were a friend. That friend
- 29:49Speaker 2: got me.
- 29:49Speaker 3: That friend should get fired.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so hopefully that friend is a job opening for
- 29:55Speaker 2: us somewhere.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Yeah, so well, you know, I was like thinking about
- 29:58Speaker 1: Outback's move, right, and they had to assess that, they
- 30:04Speaker 1: had to assess that the the move of the of
- 30:09Speaker 1: of complaining about a tip was worse for their brand.
- 30:16Speaker 1: You know. Then then you know, then certainly the corporation
- 30:20Speaker 1: can't jump on and be like, yeah, you didn't tip us.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And perhaps they knew the whole story, right, that that
- 30:27Speaker 1: that that the church had called and was trying to
- 30:29Speaker 1: figure out a way to tip and didn't you know,
- 30:32Speaker 1: maybe they knew the whole story and the girls just didn't.
- 30:34Speaker 1: She's so she just you know, shot off without really
- 30:37Speaker 1: no yeah, or.
- 30:38Speaker 2: She was venning, didn't didn't call out the church directly.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Her friend knew who the church was, her friend knew
- 30:46Speaker 2: she weren't it out Back. Yeah, you know, it's one
- 30:48Speaker 2: of those context things that you want to read the post.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Did she, you know, hashtag out Back Steakhouse? Does she
- 30:55Speaker 2: hashtag and call out the church? Interpost? There's a lot
- 30:59Speaker 2: of variables there that there would be challenged.
- 31:04Speaker 1: There's so much that can that an employee can destroy
- 31:11Speaker 1: with a social media books.
- 31:12Speaker 2: I mean, but in.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Tutor her defense, does she know that what Outback social
- 31:16Speaker 3: media policy was not. Yeah, so in her mind that
- 31:20Speaker 3: had just mean I worked today, I just wanted a
- 31:23Speaker 3: couple of dollars. I didn't get it.
- 31:24Speaker 1: That's a great idea.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Not I don't, and then for outback to come back
- 31:28Speaker 3: and say, well, we fired her because that's not your
- 31:31Speaker 3: Well did she know that?
- 31:32Speaker 2: I don't even know my employees here know the social
- 31:35Speaker 2: media policy? Yeah, I was actually just thinking, you know,
- 31:39Speaker 2: I'm thinking about that.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Do some research and spell up some and share it
- 31:43Speaker 1: with our customers. Like if you don't have one, everybody
- 31:46Speaker 1: should have to say, here's a way to use this
- 31:48Speaker 1: document to kind of choose.
- 31:49Speaker 2: You probably have one. If I know our lawyers we have.
- 31:52Speaker 2: It's just do we know it? And does our staff
- 31:55Speaker 2: know it? That's probably a different one. But you know,
- 31:57Speaker 2: it's like your handbook is fifty page handbook, employee handbook.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I don't know where.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Employees are an extension of your brand, but it is
- 32:04Speaker 3: HR's role too. You have a policy, which I encourage
- 32:07Speaker 3: everyone to have a policy to make sure they know it.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Yeah. My thing on the social media screening, I think
- 32:13Speaker 1: the position I've taken is as as b checks, you know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: start to expand, it's it's a really kind of awareness
- 32:23Speaker 1: campaign on social media screening and what it can do.
- 32:27Speaker 1: And all that is is like encouraging people. If you
- 32:31Speaker 1: feel like you can't do this all the way down
- 32:35Speaker 1: to every employee, then you know, at least start somewhere
- 32:40Speaker 1: like you know, people who have big brand awareness.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Or have forward facing, forward.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Facing you know, would be a credibility voice for your brand. Uh,
- 32:53Speaker 1: you know principles, you know, superintendent.
- 33:00Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think we've talked about a couple of
- 33:02Speaker 5: another day, right, because you know they're going to go, hey, this,
- 33:09Speaker 5: so and so a the director of you know.
- 33:13Speaker 2: This that or the O your director level should know.
- 33:15Speaker 2: But a server out at outback is probably not going
- 33:19Speaker 2: to be as aware of the social media post. But
- 33:22Speaker 2: then again she may not be out there posting about
- 33:25Speaker 2: outback or about the megachurch.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I'm just saying that's a PROBA Love has a way
- 33:30Speaker 1: for people to start in their social media of doubt.
- 33:33Speaker 1: And then my feeling is after they see, you know,
- 33:39Speaker 1: after you've done fifty sixty, you'll probably be like.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Oh, we probably should do this.
- 33:44Speaker 1: On average, we probably should do this a little deeper
- 33:47Speaker 1: because I bet that twenty five year old we had
- 33:49Speaker 1: probably that's worth social media than that other person that
- 33:54Speaker 1: we just did, you know, because.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Probably the radio. Yeah, the young generation has a worse
- 34:01Speaker 2: social media history than the older older population.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Well they live on it, yeah, I mean.
- 34:06Speaker 2: They live on it.
- 34:07Speaker 3: They they're also their daily news book was a novel.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's Facebook was a novel that you put.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Pictures of all of our stuff. My kids my Space
- 34:15Speaker 2: went down.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah, my kids tell me that Facebook now is for
- 34:18Speaker 3: the old people. I'm like, wait, what, Like I still
- 34:20Speaker 3: post pictures and only old people look at you.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Well, I think about all the people who had all
- 34:25Speaker 2: their records archive when my Space shut down. Yeah, that's
- 34:28Speaker 2: one way.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Oh gosh, I never had a MySpace page.
- 34:35Speaker 2: You know. That's got to be the nineties. Yeah, that's
- 34:38Speaker 2: got to be the late nineties, right earlier that.
- 34:40Speaker 1: I think if I had a MySpace, I don't.
- 34:42Speaker 2: That's when the first Internet, I think, first come out.
- 34:44Speaker 2: But I don't. I don't.
- 34:45Speaker 3: I was in college in the nineties, so people were
- 34:47Speaker 3: making my Space pages.
- 34:49Speaker 1: They were Yeah.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Yeah, so I was gonna say.
- 34:52Speaker 3: It's also when you put the disc in for AOL
- 34:54Speaker 3: and you you know, yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 1: People don't know what that is today.
- 34:59Speaker 2: We might want to Chang. It's a subject because you're
- 35:01Speaker 2: all agent ourselves, so you gotta be careful here.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Well, I loved it, this is this is great. Those
- 35:08Speaker 1: are really good social media stories. And and you know,
- 35:12Speaker 1: my advice to you is, you know, explore social media screen.
- 35:17Speaker 1: You know, maybe maybe if you now it's not the
- 35:20Speaker 1: right time, you do it later and figure it out
- 35:24Speaker 1: before it's too because you know, when we did research
- 35:26Speaker 1: for the show that the stories were not hard to find.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I mean it was like an immediate like holy cow, just.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Type in social media catastrophes and.
- 35:36Speaker 1: It's exactly right, and it's just wow, and you're like,
- 35:40Speaker 1: you know, it's it's it's pretty unreal. And so you know, uh,
- 35:45Speaker 1: if you're if you're if you're not doing them, you know, uh,
- 35:51Speaker 1: find one and run run them. I'm sure someone will
- 35:55Speaker 1: let you have them for free. Rand will probably let
- 35:58Speaker 1: you have, you know, a couple of amples and let
- 36:00Speaker 1: you run it on people. I know that we did
- 36:02Speaker 1: that one time when somebody used to work for us,
- 36:04Speaker 1: and we we.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Had a pretty good idea of what we were.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Going to find and we sure and if we found it,
- 36:08Speaker 1: so yeah, I mean, if yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Good thing they were prior employees. Yes, but.
- 36:16Speaker 1: You know that would have uh you know, knowing that
- 36:20Speaker 1: now you know is you should go out and get
- 36:23Speaker 1: one and test it, review it, look at the results,
- 36:26Speaker 1: you know, have some policy discussions and see if you
- 36:29Speaker 1: can figure out way to use it. You know, I
- 36:32Speaker 1: think they're I think they're a great investigative tool. And
- 36:34Speaker 1: I'm totally completely surprised at the number of people who
- 36:38Speaker 1: will post publicly, you know, the worst things ever, you know,
